INTRODUCTION: WHY PRESERVE YOUR FAMILY HISTORY? copyright 2000, 2004 SunWood Entertainment Corp
WHAT IS FAMILY HISTORY? Family history consists of the combination of historical documents, records, imagery, stories that have been handed down, memorabilia and the identification of family members and their lineage. As important are the individual family members personal recollections of their experiences from their lives. The combination of all of these together will bring life and personality to your family’s history. By including all of the before mentioned, you and your family will have a better understanding of who your ancestors were and what they were all about. Subsequently giving you a better understanding of yourself.
FAMILY HISTORY, GENEALOGY, LINEAGE AND OUR ROOTS With all of the interest these days in family history, genealogy, lineage and our roots we seem to be showing more and more interest in our family origins. Where are you from? Who were your ancestors? Have you thought of these things lately? Maybe you have. But, what do you know of your living family relatives? The personal first hand recollections of Great Grandparents, Grandparents, or even parents? Are your Grandparents still living? Have you ever sat down and talked with them about their lives? What of their lives, challenges and personal reflections from their early days do you know? What do you know of your Grandparent’s life? Parents, Grandparents, Great Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, these are all family members with knowledge of your family’s rich history and they all probably have some knowledge of your other ancestors. Your living relatives will not live forever. They are passing away on us everyday. With them goes YOUR HERITAGE: who they were, what they valued, and what they had to pass along to the future generations. And of course, with their passing goes your chance to ever hear YOUR HERITAGE first hand. Your roots, YOUR HERITAGE will be lost forever. It would be a real shame to lose it especially if you don’t have to…
DON’T MISS THE OPPORTUNITY In the early 1980’s my father passed away. I remember being very angry at the time. I felt I had been cheated out of quality time with my father. As one of three brothers and a sister I had reached a point in my life where I wanted to know more about my father. Unfortunately, right when I began to have interest in my parents history, my father got cancer and passed away very shortly after. After his death, I felt a real emptiness that I still feel today. But, all I had ever learned from his time on earth was very general and in most cases, vague at best. If I had just shown a little more interest earlier in his life I could have gathered a lot more of his reflections. It would have been very fulfilling to me. This family history could then have been passed along to my children and their children. Wouldn’t it have been great to have my father tell his stories to his great grand

children in his own words? I think my children’s children would have enjoyed knowing him, I know I would have.
WHAT WAS OUR FOREFATHER’S VISION? It is my belief that the personal recollections of our family members is as important as who our forefathers were or where we originated from. Think about it. Not only who they were, but what were they like? What were their challenges, sacrifices, vision, desires and plans for their family’s future? How wonderful would it be to not only know who are forefathers were, but what they thought and what they wanted to pass along to their future generations? I believe most of us are interested in knowing more about our forefathers. Have you thought about yours? Even if you have, what can you do about gathering it? This is what I decided would be a great purpose for us to reach out to America’s families and remind them of the significance of better knowing their family history, preserving it and passing it along to their children or nieces and nephews. Everybody in the family has a responsibility to ensure the history is preserved and passed down to the future generations. Don’t expect one person to carry the load (i.e. cousin Fred with the computer and scanner). Every family member is responsible and should ensure the burden is equally and fairly distributed (both in work load, and monetary expenses). The ideal situation would be to strike some sort of bargain. If cousin Fred has the scanner, then maybe use his scanner but see if the nieces and nephews will do the scanning, Aunt Emily will do the interviews, and maybe have everyone else chip in to help pay for expenses (video tapes, CD’s, shipping costs, travel costs if needed, etc.) that will be required to archive and distribute the family’s history.
YOUR FAMILY HISTORY The process of gathering, preserving and passing along your family’s his tory to your future generations can be achieved relatively easily. It will require initiative, commitment and follow through. It should be a joint effort for your family and you should all make sure it’s a fun process. Everybody in your family can participate and learn together. It will bring your family closer and give everyone a better understanding of your origin. Think about it, there are all kinds of software programs that enable you to publish a family history book from the first hand interviews you collect from your family member with their scrapbook pictures and other family documents, records and memorabilia. If you’re technologically blessed and posses the equipment, or have a family member who is, you can even produce a family historical video documentary from the interviews, scrapbook pictures and memorabilia. Our young people are very visually oriented with television and computer technology advancing so quickly; our society is finding our young people reading less and less. We believe that gathering you family’s history with your young involved right from the beginning and telling your family’s story with as much imagery as possible, you will end up with a family history the younger generation will take interest in. The idea is to end up with your family’s history collected, preserved and passed along in some sort of

finished product that you are proud of that can then distributed to your extended family and to the future generations. YOUR HERITAGE is a birth right each of us has in learning about our lineage and past. The who, what, where, when, why and how of our parents, grandparents and ancestors. So you end up with, not just a name on a page, but a real look into who that individual was, and therefore a more profound look at yourself. Good luck! And remember to have fun!

STEP ONE: BEFORE YOU START copyright 2000, 2004 SunWood Entertainment Corp
WHAT DO YOU WANT TO END UP WITH? Before you start you will want to decide what your end product is going to be. Do you want a family history book? Do you want a family history documentary? Do you just want to archive all the photographs? Or all of the above. Take some time to really step back and look at the big picture of preserving your family’s history for the future generations. Have a goal. Be specific. And be ready to adjust as the circumstances change. Then, step back and decide what you need in order to complete your goal. What kind of support from your family? How much support? Once you decide, then it’s important to enlist other family members to help you. It is possible to do it alone, but it’s much better for everyone, you especially, if you get support and help along the way. The most important step in all of this is that you collect individual interviews of your living family elders before they pass away. Once you decide on what you want your end product or products to be, you can begin with the end in mind while you are building. Collecting the personal reflections of your family is the foundation of everything else you do. We suggest that you interview everyone, including yourself and your children, and of course your elders. We have developed our workbook to assist you in this process. The workbook is a step by step guide to get you started and assist you in gathering your family’s interviews, copy their scrapbooks, records and documents and make copies of their family memorabilia. The workbook provides that you first gather your family interviews on some type of recording device, such as a video or audio recorder. We are suggesting that you use a video recorder because of the benefits you will end up with in the final product. A thorough list of questions is provided in this workbook to allow you to gather as much background as possible from each family member you interview. Of course you can use a video camera, audio tape recorder, or just sit and talk while taking notes if you prefer. This is up to you. The important thing is to complete an interview. We recommend you use a video recorder (digital is preferred). If you don’t own one maybe you can borrow one from a friend or even rent one.
VIDEO CAMERA By using a video camera to complete your interviews you can also video your family member taking you through their photo scrapbooks, family records, documents and memorabilia. This will provide you with the detailed explanation of the photos and other records that you can use later for reference. When was the photo taken, who is in it, where was the picture taken, etc. The family member you are interviewing can introduce each photo, identifying the people in the photo with the who, what, where, when, why and how of the family scrapbooks. Many of our family’s photo albums are old and the members of our family that took the pictures have passed away. With them went the detailed explanation of who is in the photo, where it was taken and much of the background that goes with the photo.
copyright 2000, 2004 SunWood Entertainment Corp
1
That is why it is very important to complete this step in the gathering process. While videoing your family member explaining each photo and document, you can place a 3M Post-It on the photo with a number for easy identification, naming and logging the photo for later ease of tracking. We cover this process in more detail further on in the workbook, but once you have the interview and an explanation of the records, documents and scrapbook pictures, you have the foundation of a great family history documentary and book.
SCRAPBOOKS & PHOTO ALBUMS The next step is to make copies of the scrapbook photos, family records, documents and memorabilia. We suggest a great way to copy these important, in some cases one of a kind, photos and documents is to scan them into your computer. By scanning the still imagery, records and documents you will end up with a digitized copy archived electronically. The scanning process is less tedious (depending on who you ask) with advances in technology, but absolutely paramount for several reasons. One being you have now archived your photos and documents into electronic files: Preservation. Secondly, you now have the ability to reproduce them and easily make copies for all the family members. In addition, you can now incorporate your photos and documents into several media presentations such as videos, publications, etc.
NAMING THE FILES We recommend a simple name system for naming each of the scanned files. If you just scanned Aunt Ruth’s High School graduation picture from 1977, we recommend you name it: AuntRuthSmithHighSchoolGraduation_SmallTownFL_June1977. That way if your photograph/memorabilia notes ever get lost, the file name already describes what the picture or memorabilia is. We also recommend saving scanned photographs and memorabilia as TIF files and not JPG. JPG files are lower resolution (i.e. quality). If you save them as TIF files, you can always make a JPG from it if yo u need a smaller file.
ARCHIVAL & PROTECTION Once you have scanned your family photos and other important records and documents you can copy the files onto a some kind of digital media. Also, something that is very important, be sure to routinely back up your ‘work in progress’ in case of worm or virus infestation and/or computer melt down. We recommend DVD’s for archiving and backing up. Though they are more expensive, they can handle larger files and more quantity and they tend to last a little longer than CD’s. If you’re working extensively every day on your project, you should back up every day, but at a minimum of every week. Mark it on your calendar and make it priority. Otherwise you might be faced with restarting your project if your computer has a meltdown and you’ve been neglecting your back-ups.
copyright 2000, 2004 SunWood Entertainment Corp
2
We also highly recommend making several copies of all your ‘masters’ and ‘works in progress’ which include tapes of any kind, CD’s, and DVD’s. If you own a fireproof safe or have a safety deposit box you might want to keep a copy there. And make a couple copies and distribute them to other family members who are helping or to other trusted family members. The reason this is important to do, is if ever your copy (or other family member’s copy) gets ruined because your house burned down or got burglarized, you have a back- up to your back-up. If you have been diligent with a naming and numbering system with your memorabilia inventory, you will have a good log to later go back when you want to duplicate or print any of the files off. This archiving is a great way to preserve your family’s irreplaceable records, documents, photos and other memorabilia. You have now preserved YOUR family’s HERITAGE. You have interviewed your individual family members and you are ready to take the next step. You are now ready to produce your family documentary, family history book or whatever else it is you want make from your efforts so far. So, let’s get started...

STEP TWO: GETTING READY TO INTERVIEW copyright 2000, 2004 SunWood Entertainment Corp
THE INTERVIEW There are many ways you can start gathering your family’s history. Whether you start with a family tree or collecting historical family records and documents, these are all great ways to get started into your family’s past. We think the best way to get started in gathering your family history is to start with the living members of your family. We suggest you interview each member of your family, especially the older members of your family. Make sure you interview your elders before they pass away. With camera technology advancing as fast as it is we suggest you video your family interviews and end up with a great interview that you can use for a long time into the future. By starting with the interviews you begin to gather names, places and time periods that will help you later with the additional research you take on in the quest for discovery of your ancestors. In addition, you will come across historical family records and documents that will help with your family history archives as well. Before you start interviewing we need to ascertain what method of interview technology you will use to capture your interview.
SETTING Select a comfortable, well lit room or setting to conduct your interviews. It should be a quiet environment, away from interferences and noises (people talking, phones ringing, music, etc.). Make sure you use a comfortable chair or couch and have water and tissue paper close by for the person you are interviewing.
LIGHTING Conducting the interview during the day when the sun is out is the ideal situation if you can. If you are interviewing at night, use the maximum indoor lighting you can to get the best visual picture. If you are interviewing inside during the day, make sure the light from the windows is not behind the person you are interviewing. Set your camera so the light from the windows is behind you and your camera is facing the person you are interviewing with the light shining on their faces. Also, make sure your camera is on a tripod so it is setting level and steady for the interview.
NIGHT LIGHTING If you must interview after dark and you are interviewing indoors, make sure all

of the inside lights are on. Have as much light as you can behind you and the camera so there is as much light as you have available on the interviewee’s face. Like a still camera, you always want the light behind you when you take a picture. Turn off or relocate lights that are behind the person being interviewed. Eliminate as much shadowing on the face of the person you are interviewing as you can. This can be done by taking some of the lamp shades off of the lamps to generate more light. Also, you can set lights to the left and right of the camera so you have lighting on both sides and in front of the person being interviewed.
FOCUS & FRAME YOUR INTERVIEWEE Once you have your interviewee seated and comfortable you will want to turn your camera on and focus the camera lens on the person. We recommend reading your video camera’s manual and look up the section that discusses “Focus” or “Lens”. There are three basic views you can use once you start interviewing. The closeup, the medium shot and the long shot. When you have a person seated in front of a camera the recommended shot would be either the close-up or the medium shot. Set the camera on a tripod if you have one. If you don’t set the camera on a table, chair or some other stable platform so the camera won’t move during the interview. When you have a person sitting in the same place for a long period of time it is better not to hold the camera, but rather have it on a tripod so your frame shot does not waiver.
THE CLOSE-UP SHOT The close-up shot frames the face only. The close-up shot is good for capturing facial expressions and emotion being expressed by the person you are interviewing.
THE MEDIUM SHOT The medium shot frames the individual you are interviewing from the waist up. This includes the head, shoulders and upper portion of the body. This is a good shot for capturing an interviewee who uses their hands and arms a lot when they talk.
THE LONG SHOT The long shot frames the whole person from head to feet. This shot is good when you want to frame several people in one shot or frame objects the individual you are interviewing so you incorporate both.
AUDIO If your camera or audio cassette recorder has an external microphone, use a lavalier microphone which you can attach to the garment just below the chin (4 - 5
copyright 2000, 2004 SunWood Entertainment Corp
2
inches) of the person you are interviewing for better audio clarity. Most video cameras have a place you can attach an external microphone and these types of microphones can be picked up at most camera or electronic stores near you. Be aware of conducting interviews in windy conditions, or placing the microphone on an area of their shirt that the interviewee will be habitually touching because the sounds will be amplified by the microphone. In the worst situations, it will be nearly impossible to hear them talking over the interference. For windy conditions, we recommend place the microphone, under their front collar, or just under the front inside collar. Do tests until you find the right placement that works for your windy environment .
TEST EQUIPMENT Before you start the interview do a test run with the microphone and video equipment to make sure everything is working properly. You can ask the person being interviewed to start speaking and record a short minute or so to make sure everything is running properly. After you record, play the test portion back and make sure the level of the audio and video is recording good.
EDIT LOG You might consider having a note pad with you while you interview and note major time progressions as you go. Note the time code point from your camera to each time change from the person you are interviewing. An ideal situation would be to have someone else assist you in taking notes. This will give you a rough log for future reference for editing, etc. As the person you are interviewing talks through periods of their lives make note of the year, month and dates on your note pad with a brief explanation of what occurred. While making notes record the corresponding time code from your video camera with the dates. This will give you a rough log of the interview which will provide you with a good reference for later.

STEP THREE: STARTING THE INTERVIEW copyright 2000, 2004 SunWood Entertainment Corp
WHO DO YOU START WITH? You want to get to the elder members of your family as soon as you can. On the other hand you can start with your own family and work your way out. Determine who you are going to interview first and we recommend you start with yourself. Have the person you are interviewing bring along any historical records and documents, scrapbooks and other personal memorabilia that is important to their personal and family history. At a minimum make sure they bring along their photo scrapbooks. We have listed some of the records and documents you might want to include with your interview in ‘ADDENDUM D’. We will address how you include these photos and documents into your interview later.
START WITH YOURSELF If you are building your family history, you might begin with yourself. Start with your own story.
DON’T FORGET YOUR KIDS If you have children that are old enough, you might include their interview as well. Have them sit in front of the camera and you can cue them along. Start with having them introduce themselves; name, age, place of birth. Ask about earlier childhood, hobbies, likes and dislikes, schools, friends, games, play, etc.
USE THE ENCLOSED QUESTIONS Refer to the enclosed interview questions’ outline for sequence of questions.
YOUR SIBLINGS Once you have completed you and your children’s interviews, you might interview your siblings if you have any. Follow the same sequence of questions from the enclosed outline. Make sure you have your brothers and sister bring along their scrapbooks to cover as well.
YOUR AUNTS, UNCLES, AND COUSINS You can also interview your parents siblings if they have any.
INTERVIEW MOM AND DAD A good way to cont inue with your own story is interview your mom and dad for the details of your birth and baby years as well as your siblings. It is probably best if you interview them one at a time. Ask lot’s of questions
copyright 2000, 2004 SunWood Entertainment Corp
1
Refer to ‘ADDENDUM A’ for a sequence of questions to ask. Make sure you don’t leave important information out. As an example you can start with where and when you were born. Ask about your baby years and early childhood. Make sure you cover your siblings birth times and places as well.
EDIT LOG Again, use your note pad during the interview for logging dates, times and places referred by the person being interviewed and log the time code from your camera respectively. This will help you later with sequencing any pictures that you might combine with your interview.
IN THEIR OWN WORDS, THEIR OWN PACE Let the person you are interviewing talk along at their own pace. If they miss a period of time, you can come back to that point by asking them to go back to reflect on that period of time. We have found that once the person being interviewed starts, they tend to get into their history and start reflecting comfortably. So, we suggest you let them go along with their stories and go back where you have to after they finish a period of remembrance.
ANYTHING ELSE THEY WOULD LIKE TO ADD? Once you have covered all of the questions and all of the information you were after in your interview you can ask the person you are interviewing if they have anything they would like to add in closing. Once they have finished you are ready to move on to the personal memorabilia.
copyright 2000, 2004 SunWood Entertainment Corp
2
STEP FOUR: CAPTURING THE MEMORABILIA copyright 2000, 2004 SunWood Entertainment Corp
PERSONAL MEMORABILIA A key part of the interview is to always include the family historical documents, records, photos and other personal memorabilia of the interviewee. This personal memorabilia should include any still and motion imagery. Beyond still photos personal records, documents and other memorabilia is listed in ‘ADDENDUM D’ in the back of this workbook. Everyone maintains some kind of scrapbook and has files with important historical records. The historical records and scrapbook are vital for the interview because these records and still images bring back memories and recollections of specific individuals to the interviewee that they might otherwise not remember.
VIDEO STILL IMAGERY Remove your camera from the tripod and stand behind the person you are interviewing while they remain seated. Have them lay the scrapbook in their lap and focus the camera on the scrapbook. Make sure your microphone is still set on the person you are interviewing and the sound is functioning correctly.
INTERVIEWEE WITH THEIR SCRAPBOOK Have the person being interviewed start from the beginning, covering picture by picture, explaining the who, what, where, when and why of each p icture. You will find that there will be some good information that was not covered during the interview that is brought up because of the photos. Encourage your interviewee to tell a lot of the background information relating to the pictures, the who, what, when, where, why and how. This may be some of the best information you get from your interview. Make sure they give you the names of those individuals in each picture and the time frame.
NUMBER PICTURES Each picture they identify and explain you will want to place a Post It on with numbers from 1 through 100, or whatever. Make sure you capture the number being placed on each photo with your camera so you will have each photo identified by that particular corresponding number. This will help you later on when you are logging your photos.
