In this issue of Welcome, we wanted to provide readers with vital information about the neighborhood’s rich civic infrastructure and its essential community events. In addition, we bring readers three features on the neighborhood’s businesses and culture. First, we reviewed the neighborhood’s underrated dining options. There might not be many restaurants in East Falls, but the ones it has are great. Pound for pound, there might not be better in the city. Next, we bring readers a story about Knight’s
Gym and Pinnacle Parkour Academy, two of the city’s most innovative fitness training facilities that aim to be more for their customers than just a place to build muscle and lung capacity. Both hope to make as much of a positive impact on their community’s spirit as their body mass index. Finally, we spoke with America’s Mayor, Ed Rendell, who has called East Falls home for nearly 40 years. Far from retirement, The Governor discusses his enduring love for his home neighborhood, its great residents and why he’d never leave. East Falls was originally settled by the Lenni Lenape, a Native American tribe. In 1732, Fort St. David was established as a fishery in the area and it became popular for this purpose. The namesake of the neighborhood – the Schuylkill cataracts (swift moving water over a run of boulders) – were submerged by the construction of the river’s dam in 1822. Before the cataracts were submerged, East Falls was impassable by boats and its dock was a busy transfer site between the river and Ridge and Germantown avenues. Later, as the area became industrialized by mills and other enterprises, rowhomes were built creating a thriving neighborhood. East Falls is more than just row homes and it would later become known for its prominent residents (including actress and princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly and her brother, the Olympic rower, Jack Kelly) and history of rowing on the Schuylkill River. Today it is, in the worlds of one of the neighborhood’s most famous residents, Ed Rendell, “a great urban, integrated, diverse community that lives in peace.” Attractions MCMICHAEL PARK This large, city-block-sized green space named for the first Republican Mayor of Philadelphia and Civil War POW, Morton McMichael The Friends of McMichael continue to maintain the park with a mix of service days, grant writing and fundraising. adults alike to have fun while they get a workout. Though the facilities themselves differ in terms of physical characteristics, Knight and Taylor both share similar philosophies when running their businesses, especially in terms of bringing the community together. Knight’s Gym owner Tommie Knight started his business as a way to give back to the African American community. “Health and fitness in the African American communities are not focused on as much as they should be…especially in areas of poverty,” Knight said. As an African American, Knight’s main objective is to show all black men and women that “we don’t have to be white [or any other race] in order to take fitness seriously…We can eat clean like everyone else and we can exercise like everyone else,” he said. With the growing success of Knight’s Gym and their two-year anniversary this past December, Knight’s goal is to open locations all around the country. Knight also said that the use of social media has helped to get the word out and expand the business. With state-of-the-art equipment, a fully functioning juice bar and an exclusive clothing line, Knight’s Gym provides clients with a one-stop-shop for all of their fitness needs. “One thing that people here like about our gym is the fact that it’s family oriented, people know your name in here…We motivate each other, we’re positive, the energy is amazing, we have great trainers and great equipment,” Knight said. Not even a half mile away, Andy Taylor, the owner and director of the Pinnacle Parkour Academy in East Falls, also places a strong emphasis on community building.

Taylor and PPK instructors make it a point to reach out to local schools in order to implement the Leave No Trace initiative, a community service project dedicated to cleaning up nearby parks. To Taylor, giving back is second nature as unity and togetherness are a major part of the parkour discipline. “We’re not reckless skateboarders, [Leave No Trace and giving back] are part of the parkour culture,” Taylor said. Before Taylor came to own PPK, he got into the parkour practice simply by jumping off buildings and experimenting with different tricks. After his interest in the art developed, Taylor started getting more involved in the business by running local parkour gyms, planning events and so on. Taylor even started to develop parkour equipment of his own. So, in addition to running PPK for the past year, he is now a nationwide distributor of parkour obstacles. Like Knight, Taylor is also interested in expanding his business to every major city across the country. Taylor stated that his main reason for deciding to open in East Falls was so that their practice could reach as many people as possible. PPK reaches out to every age bracket, including kids, people with special needs, etc. When it comes to teaching the sport, Taylor focuses on the aspect of failure. Especially with children, Taylor wants them to learn that failure is a path to success. “I think that’s lost in day to day activities,” he said. While scaling walls and jumping across buildings is quite opposite from working out at a local gym, Knight and Taylor’s community-oriented business models that could be a model for other businesses in East Falls, Philadelphia and beyond.

America’s Mayor calls East Falls home By Pete Mazzaccaro
It’s been almost 20 years since Ed Rendell, America’s Mayor, the most beloved Philadelphia mayor in several generations, left office for bigger and better things, serving two terms as Governor of Pennsylvania, from 2003 to 2011. Today, The Governor, keeps busy in at no fewer than 16 different tasks. He’s an analyst for NBC News and its affiliate networks, he teaches a class at Penn, writes a sports column for the Philadelphia Daily News and works for the law firm of Ballard Spahr in addition to seats on numerous corporate boards and non-profit organizations. “I keep plenty busy,” he says. “It’s different now ... I went from having 73,000 employees as Governor to 4.” After leaving Harrisburg, Rendell could have lived anywhere. But he chose a small, 3-bedroom house on Midvale Avenue across the street from McMichael Park. Its main selling point is a fenced-in yard for his golden retriever, Honor, who’s worn a firm, circular path around the yard’s perimeter. “My friends asked me, “Why don’t you move downtown?’” Rendell says. He chats while walking Honor across McMichael Park towards a plaque that bears his name. “First of all I can’t move downtown because I love Golden Retrievers. And my last three wouldn’t go to the bathroom when I brought them in town. They need grass. Secondly, I’ve come to love this neighborhood.” And the neighborhood clearly loves him back. The plaque on a tall stone that bears his name, placed there in 1999, 24

is a testament to that. In a story he likes to tell, the plaque was initially installed at the foot of his dogs’ favorite tree, but soon became a urination target of every dog in the neighborhood. “Where it is now, maybe only a Great Dane could reach it,” he says with a chuckle. Rendell says he and his former wife, Judge Midge Rendell, first moved to East Falls in 1980. “My wife’s friends owned a house here and raved about it all the time,” Rendell says. “We bought a house about a block from them.” At the time, Rendell wasn’t even the (Continued on page 26)

most prominent politician in his neighborhood. Long-time Pennsylvania Senator Arlen Specter was a neighbor “I was DA at the time,” he recalls. “My neighbors were disappointed I didn’t have a police car in the driveway. Arlen Specter did when he was DA -- he lived 5 houses away.” Rendell is effusive in his praise for his home neighborhood. He moved into his new, smaller place last year after he and Judge Rendell sold their home. The judge, Rendell says, helped him find the new house. He’s thrilled to be in “The Falls” still. “What I love about The Falls is that it’s incredibly diverse,” he says. “[My son] Jesse played football, basketball and baseball at McMichael Rec center. He played with kids from the Abbotsford homes. He played with working class, mostly Irish kids. And then he played with professionals’ kids. Those professionals were white, black, Latino, Asian, gay, straight... If you were to ask me what’s a great urban integrated diverse community that lives in peace, this is it.” Aside from the neighbors and the dog-friendly amenities East Falls has to offer, Rendell has his neighborhood favorites. He’s a devotee of Dalessandro’s Steaks and Hoagies in

Lower Roxborough (“which we call West East Falls anyway,” Rendell says). And he enjoys InRiva Restaurant, 4116 Ridge Ave., for its dog friendly days. “They have Puppies and Pizza at their outdoor seating.” Rendell also says he has fond memories of sledding on the campus of Philadelphia University, now Jefferson University’s East Falls Campus. And he’s a big fan of McMichael Recreation Center, which is helped in funding by local citizen fund raising. Asked about his political career, he says he’s still “plenty involved,” having worked to fundraise for new City Controller Rebecca Rhynhart, who he calls “the future” for the city. What he misses most in his political career is being mayor. “Mayor was more fun,” he says. “You were the first responder. You were involved in everything could sway public opinion just by force of personality.” In the meantime, Rendell says he’s very happy in East Falls. It’s a great base of operations for everything that keeps him busy and it’s a suitable home for Honor. “Because of the dogs, the neighborhood and sense of all types of people, it would take something very serious to get me to move out of East Falls,” he says.
