Find the magic of the holidays in Chestnut Hill by Ruth R. Russell
C
hestnut Hill during the holiday seasons sparkles with beautifully decorated streets and shops, visits from Santa Claus and festive activities with wide appeal. “We are encouraging people not to just spend money in Chestnut Hill but to spend time here, and get the feel of holidays in this community, says Peggy Miller, a deputy director of the Chestnut Hill Business Association (CHBA). Look for a Chestnut Hill Holliday Parade along with Sugarplum Saturday, a Chestnut Hill Designer
Showhouse and a holiday book sale at the Chestnut Hill Library. There’s more. Chestnut Hill has already started to celebrate with the traditional lighting of a Circle of Trees last Saturday outdoors at Woodmere Art Museum. “Five trees were lighted, and kids who attended enjoyed caroling, being treated to hot chocolate and cookies and meeting Santa. He arrived in a fire engine and kids got a chance to take turn riding in the fire engine. Continuing this festive start, Chestnut Hill will celebrate Small Business Day on Saturday, Novem-
ber 30. “There will be mummers and elves along Germantown Avenue as well as Santa Claus, from 1 to 5 p.m., she reported. Shopping opportunities will continue on Stag & Doe Nights. “We will have four of them this year, starting with November 30 and continuing on December 7, 14 and 21. Stores will be open until 9 p.m., many with refreshments. There will be caroling, roasted chestnut, a brass quartet, and of course Santa will stroll the Avenue. The jolly old man will also greet youngsters on Sundays, December (Continued on page 3)

ome beloved stories are told over and over again. Such is the real-life story of Caroling at the Crèche in Chestnut Hill. Area residents and musicians will again gather on the Monday evening before Christmas at the
Top of the Hill in front of the Nativity scene set up at Santander Bank. Janine Dwyer, conductor of the music for many years, hopes that everyone will mark their calendars for Monday, December 19, at 7:30 p.m. Sheets of music will be pro(Continued on page 5)

vided, and afterwards carolers will be treated to hot beverages and cookies at Chestnut Hill Library. “Musicians so far include Pat Kaufmann and his son, Daniel, both on guitar; Steve Hastie, also on guitar, Mickey Leone on percussion, and Rick Stevens, also on guitar. Joseph Block, 17, is a pianist, and his brother, Jonathan, 15, is also a pianist but plays percussion with this group,â€? said Dwyer. “Other talented musicians over the years have included Kitty Kelly, who plays the Irish fiddle; her husband, Mike Albrecht, who usually plays the boron; and Lizzie Edson, a player of bells.â€? Reminiscing for a few minutes she recalls being conductor of the caroling for many years, perhaps 28. “Pat and Steve have been doing this for almost as long as I have. When I started with group Henry Cook, from St. Paul’s, was the conductor. I have been leading this group ever since I started in business and have been here every year except for when my children were very young “Perhaps it’s time for some new faces, some new ideas. I would like to continue organizing the event for a while. That’s what Rita Coyne and Agatha Unger, who did alterations for Coyne’s shop, did before handing it over to me. “The Caroling at the Crèche is so simple, separate from affiliations to committees. It’s an old fashioned idea with a meaning of its own,â€? she said. Meanwhile, plans continue for this year’s Caroling program. The Nativity scene will be set up on Monday, December 5, and taken it
down on Monday, January 9. The backdrop for the caroling, the Nativity scene, will be put in place on Monday, December 7. The figures have been beautifully painted by Hugh McNamara and include Mary, Joseph, the infant Jesus, three Wise Men two shepherds and some animals. Antoinette DuBiel, a fellow hair stylist and dedicated helper for many years, calls Caroling at the Crèche “a great continuing tradition for this community. Participants of all ages are welcome to come and carol. The Library has always been very good about serving refreshments afterward.â€? From the beginning this volunteer organization has stood on its own, and is not connected to the Chestnut Hill Community Association. The tradition was begun by a few individuals after Mrs. Morgan (Peggy) Hebard suggested at a community meeting in 1952 that something should be done to counteract what she felt was the commercialization of the holiday. Her concern struck a responsive chord, and since then the Friends of the Crèche have set up a nativity scene with lights and greens at the Top of the Hill each December. Mrs. Hebard donated the original figures, and a manger framework was constructed. Nearby was placed a sign with a message written by the late Mary Wickham Bond, a Chestnut Hill resident and author, saying: “With fervent prayers for Peace on Earth, the Community of Chestnut Hill acclaims the Holy Birth of the Prince of Peace at Christmas Time.â€? orris Arboretum’s popular Holiday Garden Railway returns November 25, the Friday after Thanksgiving, with grand opening activities including crafts and carolers on Saturday, November 26 from 1-3 p.m. The buildings and trains are all meticulously decorated for the holidays with lights that twinkle along the tracks and around the surrounding landscape. The Holiday Garden Railway Display, which will run daily from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. through December 31 (closed Christmas Eve and day, and New Year’s day), is one of the Arboretum’s most beloved holiday traditions for many families. Visitors of all ages will be wowed by a quarter mile of track featuring seven loops and tunnels with fifteen different rail lines and two cable cars, nine bridges (including a trestle bridge you can walk under), and bustling model trains, all set in the lovely winter garden of the Morris Arboretum. The display and buildings are all made of natural materials – bark, leaves, twigs, hollow logs, mosses, acorns, dried flowers, seeds and stones – to form a perfectly proportioned miniature landscape complete with small streams. Each building, while an exact replica of the original, is unique in its design. Philadelphia-area landmarks such as a masterpiece replica of Independence Hall are made using pinecone seeds for shingles, acorns as finials and twigs as downspouts. Recent additions include the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Zoo, and the Waterworks, all part of the holiday splendor. In 2016, there will be five Friday Night Lights on December 2, 9, 16, 23, and 30. From 4:30 to 7:30 p.m by separate ticket, available for purchase on the Morris Arboretum website or http://bitly.com/MAhgr, visitors can enjoy the Garden Railway all lit up in the dark of night. It’s a truly magical experience! Holiday Garden Railway is free with regular garden admission (aside from Friday Night Lights): $17 adults, $15 for seniors, students and youth (13-18) $9, children under age three and members are free. Caroling at the Crèche (Continued from page 5)
The first location for the crèche was in front of the Hill library, which had a disadvantage. Mrs. Hebard or a member of the committee had to get a key and enter the library after hours to turn lights off and on. The following year, the nativity scene was moved to Pennsylvania Railroad Station (as it was then called) and later to the corner of Bethlehem Pike and Germantown Avenue. Subsequently it was caught in stormy winds that swept through the little tableau and smashed three figures. So the crèche was moved to a more sheltered spot, in front of Intercounty Savings Bank, now Santander Bank, where it has remained. For more information about Caroling at the Crèche, call Janine Dwyer at 215-247-2909.

ne of the highlights of celebrating the holidays on the Hill is the Chestnut Hill Community Association's annual Christmas-Holiday House Tour. Now in its 23rd year, the event has become a cherished holiday tradition for many residents. It's a great way to kick-off the holidays and reconnect with family and friends. The glimmering Christmas lights, red ribbons and smell of pine needles wafting through the air is sure to make anyone smile – even The Grinch. The self-guided tour features five historic homes decorated by professional designers and home owners. This year's tour will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Helen Phillips, chair of the Christmas- Holiday House Committee, said one of things that is unique about the Chestnut Hill ChristmasHoliday house tour “are the efforts of the local business people and designers to create holiday decorations that reflect the spirit of the homeowner. Laura Lucas, president of the Chestnut Hill Community Associa-

tion (CHCA), said the tour – thanks to the generosity of the homeowners – gives visitors an opportunity to experience Chestnut Hill's magnificent architecture and get a rare glimpse inside beautifully restored historically-relevant homes. Volunteer John Phillips, who is on the Christmas-Holiday House Tour Committee, talked to the Local about the five historic houses, most named for the families that had them built. “The former Leamy house was designed by the renowned Philadelphia firm of Cope and Stewardson, John Phillips said. “It is a stunning example of the early 20th Century Georgian Revival architecture, inspired by the 18th century NeoClassical English and American Colonial designs. In the 1980s, the house was repurposed as a condominium. “The Wissahickon Inn, which is now the home of the Head of School of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, is a masterful 1884 Hewitt brothers Queen Anne design. The Wissahickon Inn thrived as a luxury summer resort. But, by 1898, the Inn was losing business and within a few years it became the permanent home of Chestnut Hill Academy. Today it serves as the home of the Head of School of the merged Springside Chestnut Hill Academy. The entrance hall, library, and the chapel will be open for a rare chance to view those beautiful Victorian spaces. “The former Hecksher House, which was built in 1975, incorporates the low-pitched hip roofs, recessed entry, asymmetrical facade, and strong horizontal lines typical of mid century modern design. The use of natural materials such as shiplap wood and fieldstone harkens back to the Arts and Crafts influence of the Prairie Style. “The former Westleigh House, was built in 1865 by developer Charles Taylor. It was the longtime home of Democratic Ex-Mayor Richard Vaux. The home is one of the last Classic Revival homes built in Chestnut Hill. “The former Disston House was built in the popular Gothic Revival Style, he said. parking lot. In 1889, William Disston, son of the powerful Disston Saw Company. In 1954, it was sold to Chestnut Hill Hospital and used for various institutional functions. (Continued on page 15)

Holiday House Tour

“In 1980, the house faced demolition to build a parking lot. Intervention by the Historical Society saved the property, and in 1992 it was leased to preservationists Bob and Pattie Handwerk, for a comprehensive rehabilitation.” Lucas said the first "Chestnut Hill Community Association House Tour started in 1978. At the time it was called “Art & Design,” and consisted of a single home that was transformed into a designer's dream and was open for tours three weeks in the fall." “It’s amazing to think that our tour is in its 23rd year,” she said. “It only comes together due to a dedicated team of volunteers who are passionate about showcasing the rich architectural gems we have in the area. We’re delighted that so many people consider this event the start of the holiday season. We’re pleased to be able to show how Hillers decorate these one of a kind homes for the holidays.” Helen Phillips said this year there are three registration locations available: The Hill Company, 8040 Germantown Ave. the Wissahickon Inn, (Springside-Chestnut Hill Academy), 500 W. Willow Grove Ave. and the Woodmere Art Museum, 9201 Germantown Ave. Ryan Rosenbaum, executive director of the CHCA, said the house tour “supports activities and the programs that are channeled through the Chestnut Hill Community Association Office.” “Essentially when people in the community attend the ChristmasHoliday House Tour, that money is funneled back into the community and effects the quality of life in Chestnut Hill,” he said. “One of the great values of this program is that the participates of the Christmas Holiday House Tour can stay in Chestnut Hill for lunch and for dinner and are able to receive great discounts from many of the establishments in the neighborhood. This is just another perk of supporting Chestnut Hill.” He said while parking is free in Chestnut Hill Parking Foundation lots on Saturday, there is a “major parking issue at Woodmere Museum which will severely limit the parking available.” He added that there will be signage near the museum directing people to Chestnut Hill College's Sugar Loaf Estate across the street. “We strongly encourage people to cross the street with caution after parking,” Rosenbaum said. He added that there will be ample parking on the campus of Springside Chestnut Hill Academy, 500 W. Willow Grove Ave. in Chestnut Hill. Tickets cost $45 for CHCA members and $50 for non-CHCA members. Special rates are available for groups of 10 or more. Tickets can be purchased at www.chestnuthill.org, on the day of the tour or by calling 215-248-8810.
