October 15, 2011 Dear Incoming M.A. I/O Student, On behalf of the Business Psychology Department, I would like to take this chance to personally welcome you to The Chicago School (TCS) and to the Industrial/Organizational Psychology masters program. We are very excited to have you, and we are looking forward to partnering with you to create a positive academic experience. You have chosen an excellent program that will help you prepare for your career. Over the next couple of years, you will learn to apply psychology in the workplace, which will be helpful to you as a professional in a variety of work environments. Soon you will receive login information for ePortal (the online registration system) and your Chicago School e-mail account. Please read through this information carefully. All communication from the school and faculty will only be sent to you via your TCS email address going forward. For additional information about the department and our faculty, I recommend visiting our website at: http://www.thechicagoschool.edu/content.cfm/io_psychology_program_ma. Other information and events that you will learn about in the upcoming months include: Registration – which classes you should take; when registration begins; and whether you should pursue full or parttime schedules. Please see the section below for registration tips. Book List – for those of you that want to get a jump start on learning, we will provide a list of your first semester books so you can begin reading. The book list will come to you in an email as soon as it is available. This email will come from the department manager, Sabrina Pippin. It will come to your student email. Peer Mentoring Program – for those of you that are interested, we have a peer mentoring program that can help you adjust to school and city life. Orientation – please mark your calendar for January 12th, 2012. You will be welcomed into The Chicago School community and meet your program faculty members and school administrators. Cultural Impact Conference: All full-time first year students are expected to attend the Cultural Impact Conference on Jan. 27th. Therefore, please make sure to include it in your calendar as an important all day event. REGISTRATION TIPS:

You will receive detailed information about registration from the office of Student Services soon. For now, you should know a few things. First, Student Services will send out a file with all of the Spring 2012 course offerings to your student email. If you look at the tables, you will notice that all of your classes begin with the course letters “IO”. You should only register for courses beginning with “IO”. Second, Student Services will send you a handout about some of the technical aspects of registration. Please read it very carefully, as it will help prevent problems in your course schedule and make your spring semester easier. For now, there are a couple things to remember. To start, the registration software works best when accessed with a Windows computer and Internet Explore. If you are a Mac use, please be sure to arrange access to a Windows PC for your registration. Next, there are technical issues involved in the way AOL configures their service, and if you use AOL, you will not be able to access the registration software. You can use other internet service providers and types of service (wireless, cable, DSL) without difficulty.

Third, registration is a first-come, first-registered system. Students in a department are assigned a particular day to register. Transfer credits will not impact your registration. After all students are registered, we have “Open Schedule Modification”, a period when anyone can drop or add a course with an open seat. However, waiting until the end of the registration day or until Open Schedule Modification to select your schedule is not recommended. Final Remarks Regarding Registration The simplest and best registration tip we can offer is this: After your registration is complete, log out of the system, log back in, and print a copy of your confirmed schedule. If you registered correctly, your classes will have a status of “Registered” not “Selected”. This way, you can confirm that your requested registration was approved. You should save this copy of your schedule in the event that any computer problems create an unwelcome surprise in the spring. Be prepared to make a difference. I hope your experience here is fruitful and enjoyable. Welcome to The Chicago School! Best wishes, Keith Carroll, PhD Department Chair kcarroll@thechicagoschool.edu
