Lasting Memories
hen Kristen Castillo, an Arizona State University freshman, packed a disposable camera in her bag for spring break, she didn’t expect it to be the last day in her dorm room. In March, Castillo was in her family home in Orange County, CA when ASU announced classes would switch to online instruction. Although the residence halls were still open, Castillo thought that it was best for her stay in California. “My mom’s a nurse, so she’s out of the house a lot because she works day shifts,” Castillo said. “I wanted to come and help out, especially with my two brothers at home.” The ASU dorms where conversations were held and connections were sparked now are at a standstill, since students faced the tough decision of moving home early due to the coronavirus outbreak. While some students swiftly went back, others chose to stay in the dorms. As the number of confirmed cases increased throughout the United States, universities took precautions to curb the spread, such as closing down their facilities and switching to online classes for the remainder of the semester. When Castillo and her parents returned to the dorms to pack up the rest of her belongings, they were welcomed to a ghost town. Other than police officers and construction workers, she didn’t see anyone on campus. “I’m used to seeing tons of people outside and in the dining hall just hanging out,” Castillo said. “So it was really spooky to see everything nearly empty.” Though Castillo has reunited with her family, she was unable

to give proper goodbyes to her new friends who she connected with at ASU’s Taylor Place. Fortunately, Castillo is able to look back on the memories she made at the dorms because of her disposable cameras. After seeing celebrities David Dobrik and Matt King use film cameras, along with some of her classmates, Castillo decided that she wanted to showcase her first year through a disposable film lens. “I thought that my freshman year of college would be the most fun to document,” Castillo said. “My favorite part about taking film photos is that it’s a surprise every time I get the photos developed.” Castillo only had 27 shots in each roll, so she was selective about what to capture. She took pictures of moments that she knows she’ll want to remember in the future. “I love looking back at all of my photos because each one is unique

Quarantine Recipes
Being stuck indoors limits the things we can do to pass the time and enjoy life as it passes. For some of us, cooking is a passion. For others, cooking is a curiosity we’ve never indulged in until now. In either case, these are a set of recipes to keep your kitchen busy and stomachs full under quarantine. By Scott Daniels
Focaccia Bread This is a great yeast bread to serve at dinner or brunch, or even as breakfast sandwiches if you slice the bread in half. It doesn’t require any specialized equipment and is easy and vegan. Ingredients: ½ cup (120 ml) extra-virgin olive oil 2 garlic cloves, finely minced 1 tablespoon chopped fresh thyme 1 tablespoon chopped fresh rosemary ¼ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper 1 cup (235 ml) warm water ½ teaspoon active dry yeast (1 packet) ¼ teaspoon honey 1 cup (315 grams) all-purpose flour ½ teaspoon fine sea salt
7
Cheeseburger Stuffed Pasta Shells These should come in handy especially after the quarantine is lifted. Cheeseburger stuffed pasta shells sound overwhelming on paper, but on plate are a very rewarding recipe you can try out for your next holiday or kickback. Ingredients: • 18 uncooked jumbo pasta shells • 1 ½ pounds lean ground beef (90% lean) • 1 onion, chopped • 8 ounces (1 can) tomato sauce • ½ cup ketchup • ¼ cup mustard • ¼ teaspoon pepper • 2, ¾ cups shredded cheese
With those ingredients available, you first want to infuse the olive oil with garlic and fresh herbs in a measuring cup. Next, mix the yeast with warm water and honey in a bowl. This will help the dough rise when baking. Now, take flour, salt and about half of the garlic herb oil to the yeast mixture. The rest of the oil will be used later in the recipe, don’t worry. The new mixture should result in the focaccia bread dough. Knead this 1015 times. Let the dough sit and rise for about an hour until it has doubled in size. You can start the oven in the meantime and put away used dishes. After, lay the dough onto a small sheet pan or baking dish. Use your fingers to dimple the dough and drizzle the remainder of the garlic herb oil. The rugged texture allows the oil to spread throughout the dough easier. Now wait another 20 minutes for the dough to rise again, and bake until golden brown.
To start, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and cook the pasta according to its package directions. Drain and rinse the pasta, then drain again. For the beef, cook it with an onion in a large skillet over medium-high heat until the beef is no longer pink (which should take 6 to 8 minutes). Break the beef into crumbles and drain. With the beef in a bowl, stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, mustard and pepper until blended. Also stir in one of the ¾ cups of shredded cheese. With both halves of the recipe ready, combine them by filling each shell with 2 spoonfuls of the sauce. Preferably, place the shells in a greased 11x7 inch baking dish. The oven should be finished preheating, so cover and then bake the shells until heated through (which should take 12 to 15 minutes). After, sprinkle the remaining ¾ cup of cheese and bake until that round of cheese is melted (about 5 minutes). This can also have optional toppings like sliced peppers or avocado.
Dalgona Coffee You may have seen this trend floating around on social media lately. Dalgona coffee, or whipped coffee on milk, is a lot simpler than it looks, and it’s very likely you already have the ingredients: • • • •
3 tablespoons instant coffee 3 tablespoons sugar 3 tablespoons hot water Milk (size depends on glass used or desired amount) • Ice cubes • Crushed Oreos (optional topping)
In a small bowl, add instant coffee, sugar and hot water. Mix well and beat until stiff peaks with an eggbeater. The mixture should appear whipped with a similar texture to meringue. Fill a glass ¾ of the way with milk and ice. Use a spoon to dollop and spread the whipped coffee foam on top of the milk. Add until the glass is filled to the top by the mixture. Take the spoon or a thin stick and stir the foam into the milk. The fun part about this recipe is the amount of variety and experimentation you can have with these simple steps. For instance, I like crushing up oreo cookies and putting them in the milk and as a topping for the coffee, which can be swapped out for cocoa powder, whipped cream or other things really.

We Are Closer Than Ever... Literally By: McKenna Leavens
S
pring break of 2020 will not be forgotten. Not because of the beautiful skies and sunshine, but because of something a little more serious and a little less bright -- the coronavirus.
It was a couple of weeks ago when my phone was blowing up with emails and texts from my professors, peers, and co-workers. Everyone was freaking out and demanding answers. Everyone was scared and hopeless but most of all they were concerned about what the future may bring. It has been a while since the quarantine started, and being stuck inside the house all day has now become the new “normal. There are six people that live in my house at the moment, my four siblings and I along with my mom. Let me tell you our house is not that big. I went from living in a studio apartment alone to coming home to a house full of complete and utter chaos. My mom still has to go to work so my older siblings and I help out with the younger ones. I have become a full-blown nanny, while also trying to accomplish my 20 credits.
9
(My mom and I)
(My older sister and I)
My siblings and I have not lived under the same roof in a long time. I have an older brother who goes to school across the country, I live in Phoenix, and my older sister goes to college in Tucson. My younger siblings are used to it just being them and my mom. No one, especially them, was ready for having a bunch of moody young adults all in the same house at once. The only time we are usually all together is Christmas. My family is a little all over the place, my youngest sibling is 7-years-old and my oldest sibling is 21. We try to stay as close as possible, but it can be difficult when half of us are in college and the other half are just still trying to grow up. While these weeks have been difficult, I have bonded with my family in ways I never thought possible. My mom has never been the best cook, but due to quarantine, she has been cooking dinner every night. She has made it a rule that when dinner is ready we all have to sit down at the table and talk about our day, what went well and what didn’t. At first, I was reluctant to this idea, thinking to myself, what is there to talk about? All I do is stay at home during the day. As we all participated and opened up, I learned things about my siblings that I didn’t know. Like how my little sister’s favorite part of the day is when all of her “big” siblings are in the kitchen making breakfast and coffee because she likes it when we are all together. Or how my little brother gets really upset when none of his friends join the Zoom call because he misses them and just wants to see how they are doing.
10
11
My mom’s day is usually the most interesting since she is still going out. She tells us stories of how precautions are being put into place at her work, and how she can’t go near her co-workers anymore for safety reasons. Every night, we sit down as a family and reflect on the things going on in the world. We reflect on the pain and joy that is occuring. My mom purchased a dozen or so games and we play a couple every week. One of my favorites is the game, “Life.” My little sister says she loves our game nights because it makes her feel like there is nothing bad going on in the world -- she gets lost in the game and forgets about the sadness. Her comment hit me in a way I didn’t expect. It is upsetting to know a 7-year-old has to experience this much uncertainty at such a young age. Then, I realized she is lucky enough to have a family that could show her uncertainty was OK and give her outlets to feel better.
(My older brother and I)
I have always been a huge family person, but during this pandemic, I have relied on my family more than ever. They are consistent, and their love is unconditional. Being quarantined with six people is not easy, especially when I am known to be the most irritable person. Yet, my family had made it better with their smiles and creative ways to stay active. My mom built a home gym in our garage. Of course, it’s no LA Fitness, but it helps a lot with keeping a schedule and staying healthy. We are also insanely lucky to have a pool in the backyard, and as the weather gets nicer, our moods get brighter and the pool is the best place to be. While talking to my mom the other day, I asked her how she felt about us all being home. She said, “Don’t get me wrong it’s been financially rough, I can’t remember the last time I spent $600 on groceries but I wouldn’t want my babies to be anywhere else, it finally feels like home because you’re all here.” My brother’s perspective on everything really reminded me how lucky we are to be together. He has been living across the country for about a year now and he doesn’t come home often.
“
I always think that coming home is going to suck, and then I get here and we all sit down as a family and there’s no place I’d rather be.

Beauty Secrets from the Stars T
he beauty industry is constantly evolving, and new innovative ideas are always on the rise. During the Golden Age of Hollywood, cosmetic surgeries were not as common as they are today, but that did not stop people from trying to achieve their desired look. While some celebrities utilized more simple techniques, such as Grace Kelly’s use of blush to contour, others like Marlene Dietrich took a more extreme approach. Here are some of those beauty secrets from the era’s biggest stars.
Marilyn Monroe:
In order to achieve her iconic red lip, Marilyn Monroe used a contouring technique to create the appearance of fuller lips. Monroe used five different shades of lipstick and lipgloss to create dimension. Darker shades were used on the outer corners with lighter
13
shades brushed onto the center.
Joan Crawford:
After washing her face, Joan Crawford would then splash her face with ice water 25 times. This technique is used to tighten up the skin and pores and prevent any swelling and puffiness.
Gloria Grahame:
During a time when lip fillers were still being tested and were not as easy to access as they are today, people had to turn to other alternatives. Gloria Grahame was extremely insecure about her thin top lip so she placed cotton or paper in her mouth between her lip and teeth to make her lips appear plumper.
Elizabeth Taylor:
Some current beauty influencers have tested and even recommended the use of facial razors to remove unwanted
peach fuzz and exfoliate the face, but Elizabeth Taylor was decades ahead of this trend. Taylor routinely shaved her face to remove its hair and achieve a facial-like glow. This also helped in making her skin appear as clear and blemish-free as possible while filming close-up shots and working under harsh lighting.
Audrey Hepburn:
Audrey Hepburn is known for doe eyes and long lashes, but her iconic look took a very steady and trusted hand to achieve. After applying mascara Hepburn used a safety pin to separate each lash individually to ensure they were clump-free.
Mae West:
Mae West’s secret to maintaining youthful-looking skin was none other than coconut oil. Coconut oil’s uses range from cooking to taming frizzy
Grace Kelly:
Kim Kardashian and her sisters may be known for their heavily contoured makeup looks, but they were not the first to use the technique. Grace Kelly used the same contour method popular today, but instead of using contour powders and bronzers to define her facial structure, Kelly used different shades of blush. She used a darker shade underneath her cheekbones and a lighter one on the apples of her cheeks.
Marlene Dietrich:
The most extreme beauty secret on this list is what Marlene Dietrich did to accentuate her cheekbones.
The German actress had several molars removed in order to hollow out her cheeks. Dietrich also had two techniques to give herself instant facelifts. She would twist strands of her hair around hairpins and would pull tightly back, sometimes to the point of drawing blood. In the other technique, she used surgical tape to pull back the skin on her face. While certain beauty trends come and go very quickly, many of these have managed to withstand the test of time. Although I highly advise against removing your own molars, most of these beauty techniques can be easily done at home and are a fun thing to do while bored in quarantine. Try these out and feel like one of the stars from Hollywood’s golden era.

The Flight Home I flew from Phoenix to the Midwest for spring break, for great times with friends There was a little bit of it, on occasion Yet, to me, spring break was overrated before it was even extended Before every news headline was overthrown by a certain viral threat In late March, I was pondering at the kitchen window looking out Most of the time the Midwest sky is different grays, each shade blurred into the next Pretty monotonous to look at, even in the evening But I thought, “This is nothing new, these are the skies I grew up with” That’s probably why they were colorless Because I’m used to it This is my home So it wasn’t the best news to know that I’d have to stay with that sky for longer Since Southwest flights from Chicago have been canceled until whenever That flight for spring break was one of my best, actually It was the last flight in, and for the first time I saw the airport completely empty Gates down Lights off No noise Just me and my fellow passengers wandering around the big empty Now, if I drove or walked to most places there’d be a familiar feeling Few people around, but those people are angry with paranoia I loathe it But at the same time I feel some kind of comfort under that massive, gray sky

Quarantine hasn’t been too bad for you but you definitely miss the entertainment you had pre-quarantine. You miss going out to the movies or to your favorite artist’s concerts. It’s OK though. Take this time to preoccupy yourself with your own means of entertainment. Take out that rusty game console and revisit the nostalgia of your childhood. Nothing beats boredom than a good visit down memory lane. The overwhelming and anxious feelings from being stuck in quarantine have really started to get to you. But, don’t let them engulf you. Take this time to distract yourself with things you love. This means if you love baking, go ahead and do a baking challenge or bake something you never have before. Start a new project or begin something you really love doing and use it as a distraction for the unnerving feelings you have.
Quarantine has been quite peaceful for you. You already enjoy having your alone time. However, you are struggling a bit with your impulsive feelings of a new wardrobe. Don’t worry though, the best way to combat this impulsive feeling for something new can be easily fixed. Take this time to do or try something new. Whether it be watching a new show or movie on Netflix or switching your whole room around, you can even try making new outfits with clothes you already own. Change is on the rise, don’t be afraid to embrace it. Being stuck in the house and in this quarantine has been a huge struggle. You miss going to work and being able to get the things on your to-do list done. But no worries Capricorn, now is the time to rest. Not being productive and on the go all the time is OK. Take this time to finally rest and recharge. Finally give yourself that much needed self-care day and truly enjoy it. Although you miss the hustle and bustle of your work life, just relax and rejuvenate. Being in quarantine has been quite a challenge for you. You are a huge wander. You miss the freedom of going out to browse your favorite clothing stores or to get a cup of coffee at your favorite cafe. But no worries, take this time to be an explorer at home. Go on nice walks on trails you haven’t been on or go on a hike to a secluded yet beautiful area. Embrace the beauty that is in nature.

Quarantine has been a testament to how bored you get thanks to lack of time with friends, family, and significant others. But don’t sweat it! There is no better way to beat boredom than to use that time as a means to do something productive. Have you cleaned the junk that lives under your bed lately? Or gone through your closet to see what you actually need and don’t need? Take this time to do some spring cleaning. There is no better feeling for you than a clean closet as it usually leads to a clean mind!
SCORPIO
Quarantine hasn’t been too bad for you. You are already a bit of a private person but you do enjoy other people’s company every now and then. Your biggest struggle right now is not being able to enjoy the everyday satisfactions like going out to eat with family and friends or the feeling of not having to worry about a lack of common household items. But don’t stress yourself out, you can still enjoy the simple things in life, you just have to make an effort to. Take this time to do something fun even in the comfortability of your home, like reading a book, playing a card game or board games.
This whole quarantine has got you feeling pretty sad. You not only miss going out with your friends and family to eat, to hang out, or to just be in each other’s company, but you miss the simple pleasures of life. It’s okay though, there is no need to be sorrowful. Take this time to pick up where you left off on forgotten projects. Remember that book you never got to finish? Remember that gym challenge you wanted to do but didn’t get the chance to start on? Use this time as a way to get back in the groove with things you left behind.

Being in quarantine definitely hasn’t been your favorite thing. You miss interacting with your friends and family. You miss the feeling of being able to go and do whatever you please. But no worries, take this time to entertain yourself. On days when you know you don’t have much to do or a place to go, still take the time to get dressed as you would if you did have a place to be. Try a new makeup trend or refine an old skill.
To be honest, quarantine hasn’t been too difficult for you. You already enjoy staying in and are a bit of a homebody. However, being in quarantine has prevented you from hanging out with your friends, which has been a bummer, but no worries! Sometimes time away from our friends gives us the opportunity to work on ourselves. Take this time to reinvent yourself and enjoy your own company.
PISCES
ARIES GEMINI
Quarantine has been rather lonely for you. You are quite the social butterfly and having to be away from your friends and/or significant other has been really hard, but don’t worry. Take this time being physically away from the people you love to work on your friendships and relationships on a much deeper level. Make plans virtually to hang out or better yet, get old-fashioned with it and write each other letters. Now is the time to really test the friendships and relationships you have with others.
LEO
Being in quarantine has been difficult for you. You enjoy keeping busy and keeping your mind stimulated. However, being stuck in the house all day has made that a bit hard to do. But hey, don’t fret, you can still keep busy. Take this time to focus on a new challenge, even if it is just a video game you want to beat. If you really want to keep occupied, take this time to set weekly challenges for yourself.
