DIALOGUE ABOUT DIVERSITY
HEAD OF SCHOOL DR. TRACEY PRITCHARD
UNITED IN LOVE Our theme this year is #TCAUnitedinLove based on Colossians 3:12-14, “Put on love which is the perfect bond of unity.” We chose this theme because we are deeply burdened by the race-related tension and violence we are experiencing in our country. At TCA we condemn racial discrimination in all forms, and we continue to deliberately and purposefully teach this in our hallways and classrooms through the lens of Scripture. All human beings are sacred and are deeply loved by God. Christians, especially, cannot remain silent about the racial divide and violence we continue to see in our country, and TCA is in a unique position to teach the next generation to be bold agents of change.

"TCA IS IN A UNIQUE POSITION TO TEACH THE NEXT GENERATION TO BE BOLD AGENTS OF CHANGE."
I
As we all continue to process the day-by-day events we are witnessing and seek practical ways to take action against the injustice we see in our nation, in our communities, and on our doorsteps, we are grateful for the many individuals that have been an active part of this conversation at TCA. I have grown to respect, more than ever before, the importance of listening to and really hearing different perspectives. I consider often if my viewpoints and dialogue about diversity, equity, and anti-racism are filtered through Scripture, or are they being molded and formed by what I am seeing around me or what the media is telling me. Our responsibility at TCA is to lead, guide, listen, and challenge our students to critically think about and respond to issues of diversity, equity, and anti-racism as Christ would. We want to empower our students to have civil dialogue and provide them safe spaces to have these conversations, which requires TCA to become culturally competent. Our goal is to remain steadfast in creating a multi-faceted strategy that provides a platform to learn and talk about race-related issues from a biblical perspective. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that the war that is raging is not “against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over the present darkness, against spiritual forces of evil in heavenly places.” We need to recognize Satan as the author of the chaos and hate that we are seeing in our world while at the same time knowing that the Lord has placed us here, in this specific time, to be ambassadors for Him. I challenge you to seek ways to be the hands and feet of Jesus in these difficult times, while at the same time remembering John 16:33 which says, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
INITIATIVES
GRAPHIC DESIGN
This course is an introduction to the world of graphic design. We begin with the basics of what graphic design is, the creative process, and explore how it shows up in the world, careers in the industry, and the applications used to bring ideas to life. Students are introduced to the three core Adobe Creative Cloud applications: Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign. We venture into topics such as color theory, logo creation, and branding. The main objective of this course is to partner with students and inspire them to create effective pieces of graphic design. -Becca Pritchard / Instructor

STEM
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
We are excited to introduce a new addition to our eighthgrade science curriculum. This class runs three days a week and covers STEM content through lab work and data analysis. Students will study the concepts of electricity, light, and sound, how they relate to one another, and how we see them through the lens of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. We are also partnering with LEGO Education in the 2nd half of our year to explore the world of robotics. These programs allow students to apply their understanding of STEM in tangible ways. -Greg Schwartz / Instructor

STUDENT MINISTRIES
HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT MINISTRY
MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT MINISTRY
Every year TCA partners with outside organizations to provide ministry events for the TCA student body. These ideas originate in our student leadership group called Student Ministries. These two teams, one for the middle school and one for the high school, meet weekly to discuss possible ministry-related events that would be natural fits to meet the needs of the surrounding community as well as TCA. COVID-19 makes accomplishing a lot of this difficult this year, but not impossible. The Student Ministries teams have been working hard to put together weekly elementary chapels, periodic dress-down days to raise funds for local organizations, and various other student activities. Please pray for this group as they meet weekly to discuss future ministry events. Please also thank Pastor and Mrs. Coreas for their leadership with these student groups.
SEE YOU AT THE POLE "I always look forward to our school getting together for 'See You at the Pole.' Having time to pray and worship together as a school before our day is always something really special. We prayed for restoration and a return to the Word of God as we looked back to King Josiah in 2 Kings. His reform of the nation of Israel was something that pleased God and we desire these things for our school as well." -Nate Doorly '21

WELCOME
SCHOOL NURSE
MADISON NAZARIO This is my 14th year at TCA, but my first year serving as the School Nurse. God has placed in me a deep love and desire to care for people in every aspect of life. Through obtaining an Associate Degree in both Applied Science and Nursing from Delaware Technical Community College, God has equipped me with the proper tools to take care of people in an emotional, physical, spiritual, and psychological capacity. Along with receiving two Associate Degrees, I have also completed and passed a national council licensure examination for registered nurses. This year has been full of new seasons and I am very excited that God has blessed me with a loving, kindhearted husband whom I married in October! I am thrilled at being able to create lasting relationships with students and provide them with the health care they need.
I have enjoyed getting to know the faculty, staff, and, even more, the students at TCA. I pray that God grants me the wisdom and grace to serve Him faithfully. Our theme for this school year is United in Love and our Bible verse is Colossians 3:12-14 which reads; "Put on then, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.” This school year has been different from any other in our lifetimes. Teachers, students, and parents all face new and unusual challenges, and it is easy to despair when one turns to the news or social media, but be encouraged by Paul’s words to the Colossians: “God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved." That is who we are no matter where we are. God chose us for this generation. God made us holy for this generation, and God has loved us in this generation. THE SENTINEL

WHAT'S NEW? PRESCHOOL AND AFTER CARE
The Christian Academy Preschool provides a warm, loving, nurturing environment for each child who steps into our classrooms. We have dedicated teachers who seek to have a servant's heart and teach the students about God and his Word through learning Bible stories and reciting scriptures. Our curriculum provides our students with opportunities to learn through play while growing in all areas of their development. We integrate a biblical worldview in all aspects of a child’s education. We hold true to our mission and partner with families throughout their child’s time with us. As you enter our classrooms you will see the students participating in centers, going to specials, such as library, music, and gym; practicing early reading skills, writing skills, and having fun!
PLAY AND EXPLORATION We are committed to ensuring that our preschool students learn and grow through play and exploration. To do this, we have six learning centers in each of the classrooms: art, library, science, math, dramatic play, and writing. These are used after our instruction time to help each child grasp what is being taught. We also have open center time several times a day. Every child has an opportunity to enjoy every center. We operate on a rotation, so this helps the children to be comfortable with transitions and taking turns. They have an opportunity to enjoy their favorite center while also understanding that they have to spend time in a center that may not be their pick. -Becca Pritchard/Pre-K Teacher

Joining the TCA family is such an exciting privilege for me. I have enjoyed being a substitute teacher at TCA and am enjoying teaching in the preschool program and doing the graphic design class for high school. I have a bachelor’s degree in graphic design and a minor in psychology. My husband is a software engineer and loves football (Go Rams!). We have a Goldendoodle named Lady and enjoy being outdoors with her. I love to paint, go to brunch, and run. I’m excited to be blending my creative background with my heart for children.
I am both humbled and delighted to be teaching in Pre-K at The Christian Academy. I have been married to my husband Al for 24 years, and together we have five children, ranging in age from 4 to 18, all of whom have been students at TCA. I have a bachelor's degree in Christian Ministries from Grove City College and have been serving in children's ministry for 28 years. It has brought me great joy to be able to teach all of my children how to read - one of the ways God has allowed us to explore and enjoy the world around us. I enjoy watching movies with my kids, reading a classic or good spy novel, mid-morning hot coffee, and Sunday naps. Many things make me cry, and even more things make me laugh. God is good.

CONCURRENT LEARNING PROGRAM This has been a year of innovation and thinking differently about how we educate children. When the COVID 19 pandemic closed school in March 2020, our teachers quickly pivoted to building engaging and relational classrooms in a fully digital environment. This year, we are pleased to offer traditional face to face instruction in the physical classroom setting. Even so, some of our families have children or family members that are autoimmune compromised. Consequently, we implemented our concurrent learning program in an effort to meet the needs of every member of our student body. Students in our concurrent program participate in the physical classroom from their homes, digitally. Teachers provide live lessons, recorded instruction, and personal weekly check-ins catered to our remote families. Our goal is to provide the best educational experience possible, steeped in a biblical worldview, regardless of whether our students are in the physical classroom or the digital classroom.

HIGH SCHOOL RETREAT

FALL/WINTER 2020-21
#UNITEDINLOVE
HIGH SCHOOL RETREAT Every year we provide a series of retreats for our middle school and high school students. This fall we organized a COVID safe, one-day, in-house high school retreat. God did wonderful things in the hearts and minds of our high schoolers during the one day retreat. Students competed in friendly team-building activities, they participated in trivia contests, and most importantly, they came together to worship and hear God’s Word. There were three sessions prepared for them where God spoke powerfully through His Word. Students heard about Jeremiah, the prodigal son and the father's love, and the Samaritan woman and Jesus’ offer of living water. Students responded to the Word with bold steps of faith. We very much look forward to seeing the fruits of this year’s high school retreat. -Giovanni Coreas/Campus pastor
The retreat was a great time of worship and fellowship among the high school. Pastor Coreas gave his testimony and a great message about the prodigal son and how we need to be willing to let God take away the things that get in the way of our relationship with Him and with others. The games were fun, too, and the skits were very entertaining. -Brian Justus/High School Senior

WHEN SUNDAY SMILED
After graduating from TCA, Andy went on to play soccer and major in Behavioral Sciences at Messiah College. He met his wife Lori at college and the couple was married on her family farm in Perry County after graduation. They raised their three children, Aaron, Ali, and Robby, in Duncannon alongside their sheep, goats, and horses until they packed up and moved to Indiana. Andy earned a doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Indiana State University. He accepted a commission in the US Navy to complete his internship at the National Naval Medical Center. During his twentyyear career, Captain Davidson deployed with the Navy SEALs and Army Special Operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. After retiring from the Navy, Andy and Lori settled on the coast of North Carolina. Everything changed when their son Aaron was killed while riding a motorcycle in 2014. Andy decided on a pilgrimage along the 2,198.2-mile Appalachian Trail to deal with his grief.
TUCKER RODKEY PAINTING FREEDOM We often do not know the impact that individuals or institutions have on our lives until after we have left them. As I sit here at my laptop, reflecting on my time at TCA, I am at a loss for words to describe the mark that this school had on my life. We forget that a school is more than a building, the academics, or the programs. A school is made up of individuals: teachers and students, actors and athletes, introverts and extroverts. At the heart of my time at TCA is my relationships with the people that made up the fabric of TCA.
That is when I realized that despite my faith in God, my education as a Clinical Psychologist, and my experience with dealing with warriors who experienced great loss, I found out I knew nothing.
Andy’s first book, When Sunday Smiled is a triumphant account of how God melted his angry heart on top of an Appalachian mountain. God’s world opens up when everything you need is on your back and your only concern is the next white blaze. It has been an Amazon Best Seller and is a finalist for “Christian Memoir of the Year.” His second book, All That Matters, is a mystery novel set on the coast of North Carolina and central Pennsylvania, and is scheduled to be published in 2021. Andy’s website, AndyMDavidson.com, is dedicated to parents like Andy, who continue to search for answers to life’s most difficult questions.
While I learned an incredible amount of information, it was often the moments outside of instruction that changed my life. The moments where my art teacher would push me to dive deeper into my creativity and drive me towards excellence. The moments where a teacher would pray for me when they heard about my struggles at home. The moments where my classmates would laugh, compete, and encourage each other. Those are the moments that stuck with me. Inevitably, there were days where we complained about homework, teachers, rules, and all the other things students love to gripe about. But ultimately, those things faded away and I am left with the memories of friendship, mentorship, and community. And those are the memories that drive me forward. "While I learned an incredible amount of information, it was often the moments outside of instruction that changed my life."
In my years since graduating TCA, I’ve had some incredible adventures. I’ve traveled the country as an evangelist, artist, and speaker. I’ve launched a nonprofit, Painting Freedom Ministries, which has spread God’s Word to hundreds of thousands of people across the United States, while also investing in my home city of Chester through mentorship and mural programs. And every time I speak at a church or teach a young student a new art skill or paint a new mural, I think back to those days in the art room at TCA where I learned to paint or the auditorium where Mr. Walton would judge my public speaking abilities. Those days were difficult, but I wouldn’t trade them for the world. After all, they helped make me who I am today, and for that I am eternally grateful. THE SENTINEL

FALL/WINTER 2020-21
IN LOVING MEMORY OF HOPE WELLS Hope Anna Wells was born on March 8th to her parents Michael and Patricia Wells. She grew up with 5 sisters, Charity, Faith, Joy, Grace, and Glory and lived with a passion for community. Her youth was inspired by civic leadership and a goal to inspire as many lives as possible. At The Christian Academy, Hope found her identity in enhancing student life. During her four years in high school, she was involved in many activities such as Praise Dance, ACSI, and Yearbook Committee. She was also involved with the school's art team and produced various art pieces during her time in high school. Beyond her accomplishments, Hope was a light to all who knew her, from the expanse of her imagination to the depth of her personality. Hope’s love and kindness for everyone she met were unmatched, and her values allowed her to gain respect from her peers and elders alike. She openly shared words of wisdom and esteem with anyone who crossed her path. She valued the quote: "Life's most persistent and urgent question is: 'What are you doing for others?'" (Martin Luther King, Jr.) Hope adored traveling, which included visits to Mexico, Italy, France, and Germany. She also enjoyed designing graphics, singing acapella with her sisters, and spending time with family and friends. Hope’s warm and beautiful spirit unfolded within each person she reached, proving Hope as the ever-ready life of the party. She was a student leader, compelled to communicate ideas with brazen vision. She believed in a life led by passion and encouraged others to do the same. In the fall of 2018, Hope was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia. She rose to the challenge to fight against this illness. During her fight against leukemia, Hope still laughed, danced, and spoke with humor and wit. She was a fearless advocate, strategist, and passionate servant. She held to her faith in God, knowing God would use her testimony for His glory. To her, every day she lived was a blessing, even if she was in pain, she was just grateful to live another day. Her compassion and care for others shined until her very last breath. On July 21, 2020, Hope passed away from leukemia and entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a mighty, joyful saint and a testament to the love of God. In the weeks before she died, her father, Michael Wells, helped fulfill her dream of forming a nonprofit, Hope for Hope. -Wells Family I can still picture Hope bouncing or skipping into the gym asking "what was up" for class that day. Her smile and and enthusiasm were contagious. She could make any activity entertaining and enjoyable whether it was dancing during volleyball or coming up with her own unique version of the activity. I enjoyed having her in class. -Cheri Andrews/ Physical Education Teacher
Hope will always be exactly what she was meant to be: beautiful inside and out!!! She had a knack for making everyone around her feel good with her infectious smile and bubbly personality. It didn’t matter how many times I saw Hope in the hallways, she always greeted me with a huge smile and a “Hey Ms. Howard.” To know Hope was to absolutely adore and love everything about her. Psalm 116:15 says, “Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of His saints.” I know heaven is rejoicing because it truly gained an angel."

SCOTT BOSE UPPER SCHOOL PRINCIPAL It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your 6th – 12th grade principal. The Lord has led my family very specifically over the years, and we believe TCA is another stop on our service and ministry journey with the Lord. My undergraduate degree is in elementary education and I have two graduate degrees, one in church and ministry leadership and the other in school leadership. I am currently finishing my educational specialist degree in school leadership and will be done by the end of 2020. I’ve taught a variety of grades and subjects in Michigan, South Korea, and Brazil.
Most of my 18 years serving in international Christian Schools was spent at three different schools in Brazil, Panama, and Ecuador. I had the privilege of holding executive leadership positions in each of these schools. We returned to the United States in July of 2016 to begin a new chapter in Virginia. I had the opportunity to spend almost two years in an administrative role at the university level and following this, I served for two years as a head of school and secondary principal at a Christian school. I am passionate about helping schools become better, supporting teachers, and Biblical integration. I am also very passionate about helping young people understand how God has uniquely created them and how they can use their gifts and abilities to be salt and light for Jesus Christ. I enjoy reading, being outdoors, fishing, and coaching soccer. My wife Stacey is the newly appointed Dean of the School of Education at Cairn University and we have three children, Kaylee (12th), Ema (7th), and TJ (5th).
We are blessed to have Becky Hoffman join the TCA Team as she steps in to the Food Service Director role in our cafeteria program. She brings with her years of experience and plenty of ideas to keep improving our food program for our students and staff. She is working to expand our food options in our lunch program as well as exploring the possibility of a breakfast program.

Training student leaders is important but building godly leaders is critical. Having the opportunity to work with students at TCA in their leadership development is an honor.
TCA students are incredibly talented and they consistently surprise me as they lead at TCA and in their communities. Honing and directing their God-given abilities and their leadership skill set not only impacts TCA but prepares them to be leaders in their own homes, churches, places of employment, and their communities. We desire to raise up servant leaders, students that lead not through position and title but through example and action. We truly want them to be impactful, be positive influencers, and be witnesses for Jesus Christ. Preparation for doing so starts with TCA providing opportunities for leadership development
I am excited to be a part of the TCA community and enjoy serving the students, staff, & faculty. I grew up in Montgomery County and I have been in the food industry all my life, starting at a young age working in my father’s restaurants. I have always had a passion for food, and I have worked in many different businesses, schools, and colleges through the years. I have spent the last 20 years with my prior company, Compass Group. My last school was The Agnes Irwin School in Rosemont, PA where I was director for over 10 years, serving 1000 plus students and faculty daily. I have done a lot of training in food safety and sanitation, and I am Serve Safe Certified and Allergen Certified. I believe in preparing and serving healthy, well-balanced meals. I enjoy making meals from scratch and believe in using the freshest possible ingredients to make delicious meals for all.
