PEN & INK AND COLLAGE
KINDERGARTEN
ART
We talked about exaggerated pictures and how making the head on a portrait larger than the rest of the body is a cartoon technique that makes images look comical and whimsical. We talked about warm and cool colors. We used Mod Podge to deco podge tissue paper, then used a pencil to sketch out our cartoon self-portraits. We finished our drawings by going over them with permanent markers.
PETE THE CAT/RAINBOW ROCKET SHIPS/POPSICLES
FIRST GRADE
ART
PETE THE CAT- We read "Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes," studied what Pete looks like, and proceeded to first draw him with a pencil then paint him in his iconic blue. RAINBOW ROCKET SHIPS- We discussed lines and how lines can be drawn in many ways. We reviewed the colors that make up the "rainbow family" and proceeded to connect our knowledge of the rainbow and line to make the fuel for our "basic shape" rocket ships POPSICLES- We discussed the "Primary Color Family" and how when you mix the colors you achieve another color family "Secondary Colors". They made their own colors by mixing their paints in their color palettes.
BUBBLES
SECOND GRADE
ART
We watched a beautiful short film (4 minutes) about bubbles. We then talked about transparent versus opaque, contour lines, and balance. They traced several different-sized circle stencils to obtain their bubble shapes. We used oil pastels for this project.
FLAMINGOS/UMBRELLA COLOR WHEEL
THIRD GRADE ART FLAMINGOS- We read "Flora The Flamingo." The book is a wordless book, so we focused on the illustrations, especially the flamingos. We studied several different photos of flamingos and talked about their unique beaks, curvy necks, and their color. We used mixed mediums to complete this project. (Tempera paint and oil pastels.) UMBRELLAS- We looked at color wheels. We made a basic color wheel using primary and secondary colors. We mixed primary colors to get our secondary colors. Once our wheels were created we designed a picture to go with our wheels.
LINE BEARS/STARRY NIGHT
FOURTH GRADE
ART
LINE BEARS- We talked about pen and ink and different style lines. We looked at bears and their shapes. Using a fine-tipped Sharpie we drew our bears. Once our bears were complete we added color to our project by making winter sweaters. STARRY NIGHT-This project was inspired by Van Gogh's art. We studied his work and focused specifically on his piece, "Starry Night." The students were careful to work slowly on this piece to make each mark that they made on purpose. They worked and worked to layer their colors just like Van Gogh. We used oil pastel to complete this project.
