We all remember the wistful words of Frasier Crane on the beloved TV show, Frasier: “I’ll be at my club.” A social club is a portal through which we may be granted unique access to the people, food and accoutrements which constitute a certain way of life. Unfortunately, in our post COVID-19 reality, even social clubs have had to adapt to changing norms, and perhaps we now realize how fragile our society is. We, at THE CIRCLE | VANCOUVER, have taken this concept of a club, and have built on this virtually, creating a portal through which collectors and connoisseurs may have special access to the creators of the pieces they collect, privileged first glimpses of some collections, and soon, online events which they can participate in from their own homes. Called THE CIRCLE | CONNOISSEURS, our club is a private group found on Facebook, and counts among its members the renowned penmakers David Oscarson and Nino Marino, as well as independent Swiss watchmaker Max Büsser, of MB&F. With a growing number of ardent local and international collectors, our club is both exclusive and welcoming to the serious collector or connoisseur of haute horlogerie and the finest writing instruments. Guest Contributor VACHERON CONSTANTIN: COLLECTOR SPOTLIGHT By Michael Gerrard
When it comes to the pinnacle of Haute Horlogerie and luxury, one needs to look no further than Vacheron Constantin to find a brand that is close to many collectors’ hearts for its commitment to quality, design and technical innovation. As part of watchmaking’s oft-discussed “holy trinity” (alongside Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet) it is by far the oldest of the trio and indeed, the longest continually operating watchmaking Maison in the world. There is certainly a sense of pride when wearing a timepiece from a manufacturer that has been creating wrist-based art since before America was independent.

Originally formed in 1755 by Jean-Marc Vacheron, the brand was at the forefront of building exquisite timepieces by hand and, even then, pushing the boundaries of technology. Through the creation of “calibers” (movements produced serially to a certain fixed specification) Vacheron was able to greatly enhance quality, allow an increased volume of production and provide for easier servicing. This innovation essentially formed the basis of all modern watchmaking. Fast-forward 265 years, and it is evident that Vacheron Constantin has not stopped innovating, currently holding the record for the most complicated watch ever created (the Reference 57260 with 57 complications).
Vacheron Constantin has a long tradition of dress watches with high complications, and compliments these models with its sport-focused Overseas lineup – a range of high horology stainless steel sport watches with Geneva Seal level finishing. Originally derived from the Reference 222, designed by Jörg Hysek in 1977, the Overseas line of watches has evolved into a mainstay of the Vacheron Constantin brand, appealing to today’s young collectors.

Despite current global circumstances, the brand continues to innovate and release watches through online mediums such as Watches & Wonders. 2020 saw the release of several new super-complicated watches, as well as updates to their existing lines with new dials and complications. The new Les Cabinotiers Grand Complication Split-Seconds Chronograph features 24 complications (including several striking capabilities), a tourbillon and 1,163 parts. In the more accessible range of timepieces, we see introductions of fantastic coffee-brown dials for the FiftySix collection, and the much-loved skeletonized Overseas Perpetual Calendar with full gold bracelet. Today, Vacheron Constantin has boutiques and authorized dealers around the world, but the brand has been exporting watches since the early 1800’s to the Americas and beyond – an enormously difficult feat at the time. Building watches and then exporting them to even European countries would have involved small volumes of watches being transported across borders with very few static rules about import duty and taxation. Travels would be long and slow, typically by horse-drawn carriage and/or months at sea. Without modern marketing practices, the quality of the watches would have to have stood out to potential buyers, who would likely have been unfamiliar with the brand. With a long history, a wide range of models and a rich repertoire of technical innovations and cultural ties, collectors and watch enthusiasts alike enjoy Vacheron Constantin as a brand because there are many facets to explore. Sites such as ours, Maltese-Cross.com, or Instagram accounts such as @thehourlounge, explore the art of watchmaking within the context of European history, and our dedicated social media group for collectors and enthusiasts of the brand, the Vacheron Constantin group on Facebook, is a community with over 10,000 passionate members world-wide. That being said, nothing takes the place of appreciating these exquisite pieces in person, handling them and wearing them. Honouring the legacy the Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan, who ruled during a golden age when the dynasty’s art and architecture had reached their pinnacle, the Celebration of the Taj Mahal collection pays tribute to the edifice constructed by the Emperor in honour of his wife Mumtaz. The Black Myth edition, crafted from solid Au 750 white gold, entirely jewelled in pavé-set black sapphires and brilliant cut diamonds with a 6.24 ct., FL round brilliant cut diamond as its centre stone, is an homage to the Emperor’s plans to build a mirror image of the Taj Mahal for himself, but in black, on the opposite bank of the Yamuna River. The Insignia of Power edition references the symbolism of a dagger, whose shape inspired the curved form of the entire collection. Used as an insignia of authority, Shah Jahan was given his own personal dagger by his father upon his coronation. Made from solid Au 750 yellow gold and adorned with uncut rubies in cabochon settings, in the style of Kundan stone setting, the Insignia of Power has a 6.42 ct., F VVS 2 old mine diamond as its centre stone and a detachable 2.45 ct. cabochon ruby which can be removed to reveal a daisy, painted in enamel, beneath. Often inscribed with sacred texts, worn as personal talismans and passed down as dynastic heirlooms, emeralds were called, “Tears of the Moon.” Crafted from solid Au 750 yellow gold and set with rubies, emeralds and diamonds, the Tears of the Moon edition has a 6.10 ct., step-cut emerald as its centre stone. As with the entire collection, the Tears of the Moon edition has no clip, but rather features a peacock feather motif, with a detachable rose cut diamond, which conceals a miniature enamel painting of a bird. Uniquely, these limited editions feature solid Au 750 yellow gold nibs adorned with two birds and set with precious stones. Carrying on Montblanc’s tradition of limited edition tribute pieces, each edition tells a story of love, empire and honour. THREE LIMITED EDITION FOUNTAIN PENS FROM ITALLIAN PENMAKER MONTEGRAPPA
Exploring three 2020 limited edition releases from the legendary Itallian penmaker, Montegrappa, expressing its unique vision of beauty in the 21st century using marble, wood and fine art.

Those who enjoy writing by hand with a beautiful fountain pen know the pleasure of using the best quality paper. The first of the notebooks we included in this review is from Montblanc’s leather collection. Featured Ink THE RETURN OF SEPIA: MONTBLANC’S TOFFEE BROWN Whether Vacheron Constantin’s FiftySix with sepia brown-toned dial, the popularity of leather finishes which appear time-worn or fountain pen inks, sepia is definitely back in vogue.
We all remember old family pictures in faded brown tones, or perhaps you have looked at medieval manuscripts, books or journals, dutifully preserved and still displaying their artful script. Sepia is a colouration often associated with romantic, sentimental or aged things. It is the colour we often correlate with an image or a thought from another time, documented for posterity and carried as a precious memory in culture, in a family or by just one individual. Sometimes lost, these treasures are often found serendipitously by those who will appreciate them most. And, because these objects have survived, they give us a glimpse into a past world.

To the delight of horology aficionados, leather goods users and fountain pen collectors, sepia, itself, has survived the ravages of time, emerging more recently as a comforting colour, tone or finish in an increasingly austere, white and postmodern world. Harkening back to times when a quill and parchment or vellum were the only way to preserve a message or information for following generations, sepia hints at the necessity of those basic things which we now consider to be luxuries, and which we cannot fully justify as practical in our own times. It bears a gravitas which enduring things often have, and justifies its own existence by the irrefutable and supremely important role it played in bringing humanity through the dark ages, preserving our societies, cultures and empires for their eventual resurgence. With these things in mind, it seemed appropriate to use a vintage Montblanc 149 for this review. The smoothness of a time worn nib seemed a good match for this ink, which flows with a rather enjoyable, pigment-rich mellifluousness. Shading heavily from a light, almost amber colour to a dark and saturated brown, reminiscent of a fine coffee, Montblanc’s Toffee Brown is aptly named and as delicious to use as the name implies.

Horology VACHERON CONSTANTIN’S ODE TO MUSIC: LES CABINOTIERS ASTRONOMICAL STRIKING GRAND COMPLICATION
From Vacheron Constantin’s Les Cabinotiers program emerges a masterful, one-of-a-kind grand complication, with 19 complication including minute repeater, perpetual calendar, as-well-as solar, sidereal and civil time.

Setting benchmarks for modern day watchmaking, the Les Cabinotiers program is creating museum quality, one-of-a-kind pieces, which will be marvelled at within historical collections of the future. Drawing its name for the 18th century watchmakers, called cabinotiers, who worked in naturally lit ateliers on the top floors of Geneva’s buildings, les cabinotiers revives the tradition of bespoke watchmaking and gives the truest horological collectors the chance to be a part of watchmaking history.

First of all a minute repeater, this creation is based on the ultra-thin Manufacture 1731 movement, which by itself measures only 3.90 mm thick. Building on this, Vacheron Constantin added a minute repeater mechanism from its “La Musique du Temps®” range of sonnerie timepieces with one-of-a-kind chimes. Partnering with Abbey Road Studios, Vacheron Constantin has been able to record the unique sound print of this specially created chime, and have it certified by the studio. In the words of Jeremy Huffelmann of Abbey Road Studios, “The opportunity to capture the sonic identity of these incredible timepieces is a privilege. These recordings perfectly encapsulate the shared values of craftsmanship, expertise and excellence that define our collaboration, whilst forever preserving the personality of these singular timepieces.” Among the 19 complications housed within the 12.54 mm thick, 18-karat 5N pink gold case is a perpetual calendar function and three further time readouts: civil time, solar time and sidereal time. Telling civil time with hour and minute hands, the third hand is reserved for solar time or the equation of time, which varies from civil time by -16 to +14 minutes per day, depending on the season. Caused by the Earth’s elliptical orbit and the 24° inclination of Earth’s axis, this disparity between civil time and true time is only resolved four times a year. On the reverse is found a display of sidereal time, with a star chart superimposed on two sapphire disks. Displaying with the stars the Earth’s circuit through a 360° rotation, the 23 hour, 56 minute and 4 second sidereal day is mapped out for the dedicated horophile. With 60 hours of power reserve, the manually wound, in-house calibre 1731 M820 movement is Geneva hallmarked and beats at 3 Hz or 21,600 vibrations per hour. Tell us about the current climate of the luxury home building industry in Vancouver. During the COVID-19 lockdown, we found new construction leads dropped significantly as to be expected. As B.C. started to open up and loosen their requirements, we experienced a huge upswing in requests for new builds and renovations. How have the increase in regulations and standards, calling for the accreditation of home builders, changed the residential construction industry? B.C. Housing has led the country in requiring B.C. builders to be licenced through a rigorous set of requirements. In addition, every builder must take Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points to maintain their status. These requirements are critical to cleaning up the home building industry and eliminating shoddy and unprofessional builders.

New builders need to be better educated and genuinely invested in their companies, understanding the business side of running a company such as establishing strong contracts and financial tracking of projects. Builder education will also improve the understanding of building science and innovative methods of building an efficient, healthy, comfortable home. Great advancements have been made over the last 15 years. How has the process of planning and designing a home developed over the past decade? How has the way clients interact with the design process evolved? As luxury, custom home builders, we are accustomed to walking through the entire design process with our clients – including architectural and interior design. We have experienced too many couples who have come to us with their fully designed homes only to find that their budget is not sufficient to properly build their home. It is advantageous to have your builder participate in the design process and provide intermittent budgets to ensure your home can be built within your budget. A second growing trend in the luxury home building industry is the Integrated Design Process (IDP). During the designing of your dream home, involve the architect, homeowners, builder, HVAC contractor, structural engineer, energy advisor, insulator, window manufacturer and others early in the design process. It is better to solve problems on paper rather than on site, during construction. This approach ensures that the home will function in a way that exceeds your expectations. What are the trends driving the luxury home industry in Vancouver today? Over the last 20 years, we have noticed a trend away from granite countertops and towards man made quartz and similar products. Built in vacuums are becoming less desirable as people love their Dysons and Roombas. Homes are becoming more integrated so that homeowners can operate the heat, front door, security cameras, and other items remotely. And with the introduction of the Energy Step Code, homes are becoming more efficient, with reduced operating costs. These homes are also more comfortable, healthy and quiet.

Walking down the dock at the Coal Harbour Marina, we were led to one of the most impressive vessels in M & P Yacht Centre’s current inventory, the Sunseeker Manhattan 66. Cutting an imposing silhouette, the new Manhattan 66 carries forward the hallmarks of Sunseeker’s tradition: an aggressive profile and sporty stance. Sunseeker’s strength has always been the melding of sporty styling, high performance and luxuriously appointed interiors. Boating enthusiasts and followers of the brand will remember the familiar scene of test hulls with plywood windscreens shielding engineers and technicians as they piloted Don Shead designed hulls through rough British waters, testing their metal. This is the substance of Sunseeker’s legendary status, which is only hinted at by the identifiable styling, so commonly and casually enjoyed in docile marinas. With a maximum speed of 32 knots and an option of either drive shafts or pods, the Manhattan 66 displaces 38,500 kg, carries 4,000 litres of fuel and has a range of up to 280 nautical miles. Entering from the rear of the boat, guests are greeted by a spacious rear deck with a dining area and bar which opens to a central galley when glass doors are retracted.

Once inside, the living areas flow from the large, working galley with stainless steel appliances – destined to be the centre of casual life and entertaining onboard – to generous living and dining areas with expansive views through expansive side and forwarding looking windows. Furnished with carpeting over hardwood floors, the main salon has the feel of a comfortable great room, with seating arranged in groups for multiple, intimate conversations or a large central gathering. A table to port can fold out to provide space for six to dine comfortably, and a settee to starboard rounds out this multi-functional space as a grand salon for social gatherings. The helm offers commanding views through large windows, and comfortable cruising during inclement weather. Offering digital read outs and joy-stick controls, the Manhattan 66 can be piloted by a single operator, navigating through a congested marina and docking without the need for a crew. Indeed, most owners opt for a private onboard experience, operating their vessels themselves, and using the crew quarters, fitted with two berths, a head and a washer and dryer, as space for extra stowage.

Below deck, four state rooms provide room for up to eight guests with the aft crew quarters accommodating up to two crew members, accessed from the rear swim platform. Flanking the boat are two guest staterooms with two single berths each, and a VIP cabin at the bow. The staterooms are luxuriously appointed with glossy veneered doors, matching marquetry throughout and marble countertops in the heads. With two heads, each featuring glassed-in showers and abundant marble, living space is generous and private, and well suited for families or more formal entertaining.

Accessed by its own staircase from the galley, the full-beam master stateroom is an owner’s sanctuary, with a marble-lined ensuite, large closet and leather topped, built-in cabinetry on both sides of the room. To port there is a built-in work station or make-up table with a surface that lifts to reveal a mirror and jewellery drawer, as well as a swinging seat, which folds neatly away. The owner’s suit is designed to provide the comforts of home in a private setting, removed from other guests and daily activity onboard. Sitting down at our table overlooking Coal Harbour and Stanley Park, we were ensconced in the dramatic landscape which defines Vancouver as much as the people, landmarks and icons which have shaped it. Five Sails has long been Vancouver’s home of classical cuisine, and recently passed under the stewardship of Emad Yacoub and the Glowbal Group. Sure to become a fixture in the Vancouver restaurant scene, the new General Manager, Christophe Chabre, sharing his vision for the restaurant explained, “The menu is going to be taken to the next level.”
Beginning with an amuse bouche of lobster wonton with potato and leak soup, we ordered our appetizers, the classic caviar service and foie gras. Served pan-seared, the Quebec foie gras is accompanied with truffle sauce and caramelized apple, as well as a chilled terrine with huckleberry jelly. We had come, however, for the classic caviar service, which is perhaps the first of many future improvements, taking Five Sails to the next culinary level.

Formerly featuring Nothern Divine B.C. Sturgeon roe, the new classic caviar service boasts imported Ossetra caviar from Italy. The Russian Sturgeon roe are dark in colour, with a mild flavour which blossoms into the gentle finish expected from this traditional delicacy. Served on ice with buckwheat blini and brioche toasts, the caviar service is accompanied with traditional garnishes of red onion, chives, crème fraÎche, grated egg yolk and grated egg white. We highly recommend this as a classical and indulgent way to begin an elegant dinner.

We followed the foie gras and caviar with the honey-glazed, smoked duck breast and almond encrusted rack of lamb and loin, long-time classics on the Five Sails menu. Finishing our evening, we sampled the Grand Marnier Soufflé with crème anglaise and house made rum and raison ice cream; the Luxe Lemon Mille-Feuilles, with layers of pastry, chilled lemon cream, lemon parfait and a berry purée; and the not to be missed Chocolate Opera Slice. Although revered in Vancouver’s restaurant circuit, Five Sails promises to delight patrons with an evolving menu, crafted by the new and dynamic team at its helm. Watch out for exciting changes to come, as this Vancouver favourite for haute cuisine enters a new season of re-invigoration and renewal.

The Last Word HOME
Remembering my own childhood home, and the process of creating homes as sanctuaries for life, which I was fortunate to be a part of from my youth.
In talking with Larry Clay, Director of HAVAN and President of Clay Construction Inc., I was reminded about my own childhood home. Growing up in a family involved in construction, it was wonderful to be immersed in the powerful process of putting pencil to paper and designing a home, a sanctuary for life, on a blank piece of paper. Watching my Dad, whose business manufactured architectural millwork, constructing a physical structure from his design and my Mom decorating it and shaping it into a home, was always an extraordinary and enchanted experience. Design and building have been a part of my life since I was a child, it was more than just work, it was a way of life. The power of crafting an environment in which to live is magical, especially when it is an environment which is shaped by your own tastes and which is a manifestation of your own dreams. A home is a stage on which the narrative of life plays out; it is a set, which gives context to the characters, the plot and the meaning of every scene. People watch movies to be immersed in a story, and yet, are often not immersed in a story of their choosing in their own daily lives. And so, we talk of escapism and romanticism. But there was a time when romanticism was a way of life. When I worked on my largest residential construction project, designing the exterior and interior for a 5,000 square foot, Shaughnessy-style home, I had one stipulation: it had to have a library. This became the central inspiration for the project, and also the central room. Libraries are often the most beloved, rich and romantic rooms of grand old houses, castles and palaces. These are the rooms which we inhabit in day dreams. Why not build them? So much of life is spent dreaming of the future, making plans, and working to build our lives , but are we working to build our dreams? Are our lives the narrative of our choosing, and have we set the stage for them? As we live our lives, we are not merely surviving within a social system, we are crafting our own narrative. We are all builders of dreams in our own capacities. And when we design, or work with designers, we are not only building ‘spaces,’ we are building substance. We are giving shape to the type of life we want to play out during our precious time in this beautiful world. The awareness of these things is not only relevant to design and construction, but are a part of a purposeful and dynamic approach to life. These are essential concepts to a life lived consciously and conscientiously. This why the Italians spoke of the cognoscenti, and this is the true power behind the connoisseurial life: The awareness that what we do not merely walk through each day, surviving the uncontrollable, but rather use each day as a canvas, aware of the tools we bear to build our dreams and shape our reality.
