Welcome to the Bush Adventures Winter Program 2018. This winter our Bush Kids sessions will be packed with “Bush Stories” as we explore Hobart’s bushland reserves, meet some locals and read a story or two among the gum trees. Flora the Explorer is out and about, with new creations and friends to be made. For our older kids we’re zooming along on an AMAZING race, embracing our inner actor in a Bush Drama and tackling the tracks with a mountain bike riding workshop. There’s also plenty to do for families as we give nature a helping hand on National Tree Day, Friday 27 July. Other activities include: • • • • • • •

JOIN A BUSH ADVENTURE AND GET OUTSIDE All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Dress for the conditions, bring a snack and water. Look out for the Bush Adventures flag when arriving at any activity.
FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY COST: $5.50 per child Great opportunities for your family to do something special together. Combine one of these activities with a picnic, walk or another fun activity and spend your day outdoors. Aboriginal Cultural and Bush Tucker Tour Sun 8 July, 10 am – 12 pm (NAIDOC week) Sit with palawa educator Trish Hodge and share in the knowledge and wisdom of her ancestors. This activity is open to anyone who wants to know more about the first people of lutriwita/Tasmania and their ancient and living culture. Meet: Queens Domain Summit Carpark, Queens Domain Where Our Wild Things Are Sat 14 July, 5–7 pm At night another world of creatures comes out to play in our bushland reserves. Join us for a night walk to see where our wild things are. We’ll give you handy hints for spotting creatures of the night and prepare you for your own spotlighting adventures. Bring: A torch and warm clothes Meet: Waterworks Reserve, just inside the gate on Waterworks Rd, Ridgeway (park outside the gate)
FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY (CONTINUED) Ride the Loop Sun 22 July, 10–11.30 am(school holidays) There’s a great place to ride right in the centre of Hobart. Bring your bike and experience the thrills of the trail, test your skills and zoom down hills on Hobart’s new Summit Loop Track. Meet: Queens Domain MTB Track (Near Tas Water Tanks), Summit Rd, Queens Domain. Note: All participants need to bring their own, fully-functional bike with brakes and a helmet that meets Australian and New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS 2063).
Nest Box Workshop Sun 29 July, 10–11.30 am (National Tree Day) Learn how to build a very special ‘nest box’ for our winged friends as part of National Tree Day. All materials will be provided and the nest boxes created will be installed throughout Hobart’s bushland reserves and further afield. Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway Sea Shell Science Sat 11 August, 10–11.30 am (National Science Week) Join Bush Adventures for a sea life discovery program aimed at young children. Engage your curiosity and explore all there is to know about the animals we find on the beach. Meet: Long Beach South BBQ area, (near 646a Sandy Bay Rd), Sandy Bay Festival of Bright Ideas Sat 18 August, 10 am – 5 pm (National Science Week) Bush Adventures will showcase the wonders of Hobart’s bushland reserves. This family friendly festival will inspire, delight and engage audiences with a diverse program of hands-on activities, science, entertainment and celebrity speakers. Activities include bush regeneration and track maintenance. 2-5 YEARS Flora the Explorer’s Ferns, Fronds and Friends Mon 2 July, 10–11.30 am Follow Flora and discover who lives in the ferns and fronds of the Waterworks Reserve. Play with paint, mix the colours of nature and create your very own work of art. Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway. Flora the Explorer’s Little Bush Walk Mon 23 July, 10–11.30 am Take a stroll along the tracks and trails of Waterworks Reserve. Follow your nose, look out for tracks and scats, feel the rough bark of eucalypt trees and taste the crisp cool winter air as we discover the joys of walking in nature. 2-5 YEARS (CONTINUED) Bush Stories Sit among the gum trees, share in a story of wild creatures, amazing plants and other tales of our natural world. 5-7 YEARS Leaf Fairies Tue 10 July, 9.30–11 am (school holidays) If you go down to the bush today, you’re sure of a big surprise. If you go down to the bush today, you better go in disguise! For every fairy that ever there was, we will gather at Waterworks Reserve, because, today is the day leaf fairies have their picnic. Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway Jumping Joeys Wed 11 July, 10.30 am – 12 pm What do you call a baby kangaroo, wombat or bandicoot? They’re all called joeys! Hop into this native mammal activity and learn all about our baby marsupials and their early life inside a pouch. Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway
5-7 YEARS (CONTINUED) Nestorama Tue 17 Jul, 10–11.30 am (school holidays) Birds need homes and can even build their own. Come and play ‘spotto’ with our winged wonders and see how many birds you can find in our bush. We’ll also find out some of the tricks of the nest-building trade and make our own nest. 7-10 YEARS Bush Detectives Tue 10 July, 1–2.30 pm (school holidays) Can you identify and unravel the clues animals leave behind in the bush? Learn the tricks of a bush detective and how to be a guardian of the bush. You’ll discover which animals call our bush home and get to see what these animals get up to when we’re not around! Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway The AMAZING Race Tue 17 July, 1–2.30 pm (school holidays) Wear your running shoes and tie your laces in double knots. The AMAZING race at Waterworks Reserve will sort the clever kookaburras from the rest. Race around the reserve, competing in bush-themed challenges and collecting tokens from each event. Only one team can win! Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway Bush Drama Thu 19 July, 10–11.30 am (school holidays) Join us for a morning of drama games and improvisation in the bush! GO WILD, GO SOLO COST: $5.50 per child Our ‘Go Wild, Go Solo’ program is for kids aged 10–14 who are keen to have their own bush adventures. For these activities parental supervision is not required. For the safety of your child/teenager and the entire group please ensure your child/teenager is capable of undertaking independent and physically challenging activities. Wild Survival Wed 11 July, 1–3 pm (school holidays) The Tassie wilderness can be one of the harshest environments on our planet. Discover how you can adapt your thoughts and actions to work with the environment and be safe in any conditions. Bring: Weather appropriate clothing, including a wind/ rain jacket, sturdy closed shoes, small backpack, water bottle and healthy snack. Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway. Ridgeway Explorers Thu 19 July, 1–3 pm (school holidays) Join us for an adventure as we explore sandstone caves, altered waterfalls and trace the tracks and scats of the animals who call Waterworks Reserve home. Discover how this incredible resource can help you learn more about our city or anywhere in Tasmania. Meet: Elizabeth Street Conference Room, Town Hall, Hobart Plastic and Marine WildlifeMyths, Facts and the Future Fri 24 August, 5.30–6.30 pm Plastic in the ocean is a serious global issue, but are all of our sea animals actually full of plastic? Lauren Roman has just finished a doctoral thesis looking at the effects of plastic in marine birds at the University of Tasmania. Find out what the science says about the myths and facts of the impacts of plastic on marine birds and other wildlife.
