FRIENDS OF WELLINGTON PARK

FIRST TUESDAYS, 9.15 am – 1.30 pm

Ranging across beautiful landscapes, from the sub-alpine slopes of kunanyi/Mt Wellington to the waterways of Lenah Valley in the hunt for weed challenges.

Sep 5 Weeding out red hot pokers, foxglove and iris from the lower slopes of kunanyi/Mt Wellington. Fairly easy access, not far to walk.

Meet: Junction of Inglewood Rd and Strickland Ave.

Sep 30* Weeding Spanish Heath below Main Fire Trail in Wellington Park.

Meet: Top of Old Farm Road, South Hobart, at 10 am on Saturday.

Nov 7 Tackling Spanish heath above New Town Falls. Reasonable fitness needed for 40 minute walk in and out. If there’s a high fire danger or inclement weather we will ’ll have the same meeting place but a closer work site.

Meet: Top end of Lenah Valley Road near boom gate.

VALLEY STREET BUSHCARE

* FIRST AND THIRD TUESDAY, 1–2 pm

The Leonard Wall/Valley Street Reserve and Providence Gully are habitat islands with a close connection to Knocklofty Reserve. The group is managing and replenishing wildlife habitat. These sites are not suitable for large groups. Inexperienced volunteers welcome.

IMPORTANT

Please wear long sleeves, long trousers and covered shoes. Some of our sites are steep and challenging, so please read the descriptions to help you select a suitable activity. We also recommend you bring a broad-brimmed hat.

Restoring the urban fringe for people and wildlife, from Waterworks Valley to the banks of Sandy Bay Rivulet.

Caring for the lovely open peppermint woodlands surrounding Ridgeway.

FERN TREE BUSHCARE

SECOND SUNDAY, 10 am – 12.30 pm

Controlling invasive weeds in the cool, shady forests of the lower foothills of kunanyi/Mt Wellington.

Sep 10 Weeding out Daphne laurel and large woody weeds on private land. Followed by a specially catered morning tea.

Oct 8 Help remove woody weeds from private land including Daphne laurel and karamu.

Nov 12 Searching for Daphne laurel seedlings in a beautiful, established private garden.

Take a behind-the-scenes look at how we are restoring grassy woodland habitat, including critically endangered lowland Themeda triandra grasslands, as we walk through beautiful native bushland on the Queens Domain.

FIRE AND NATURE

OCTOBER 8 & 14, 10 am – 12.30 pm

Journey into the world of fire and nature with the people who use fire to care for Hobart’s bushland reserves, including the native bushland that surrounds Mt Nelson and Knocklofty.

CORNELIAN BAY BUSHCARE

Protecting Hobart’s coastal vegetation around the

picturesque Cornelian Bay and important grasslands of the Queens Domain.

Sep 24 Caring for native grasslands at the crossroads on the Queens Domain – freesia follow up, weeding gorse, cocksfoot, briza, panic grass and thinning out sheoak and bluegum saplings.

Meet: Joggers Loop picnic table, Queens Domain.

Oct 22 Queens Walk weed-sweep. Hunting for woody weeds above Cornelian Bay.

LAMBERT GULLY BUSHCARE

Working along the slopes of the Lambert Creek waterway under giant blue gums to maintain the habitat corridor of Lambert Gully.

Our Bushcare groups are run by volunteers working with the City of Hobart to help care for their local bushland reserves. During Bushcare events children under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Bushcare is cancelled on days of total fire ban, high winds or heavy rain.

PLEASE BRING: Strong boots, warm waterproof clothing, a hat and a drink. Gloves and all tools will be supplied.
