Welcome to the Bush Adventures Autumn Program 2019 This autumn the Bush Adventures team invites you into the wilds of Hobart to explore and discover the beauty, the wonder and special creatures and organisms who call Hobart home. The autumn program is filled with discovery walks, helping you to see nature anew and appreciate its interconnectedness. Local mycologists Genevieve and David lead us into the wilds again on the search for fungi, slime moulds and more discoveries of the relationships between, plants, fungi and life. The team from nita education will be facilitating a weavers and twiners workshop, sharing stories of one of the oldest living cultures on earth. For kids, this season we have lots of great opportunities to get outside and explore nature through the lens, on bike and on foot. As always, our Bushland Reserves are open for all to explore and enjoy. And remember, the simple choice of spending more time in nature will do you a world of good. NATURE BASED ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES (Bookings are essential) Cost: $5.50 per person Nestbox Workshop Sat 30 Mar, 10 am – 12 pm Learn how you can help our furry and feathered friends find a home among the gum trees. Discover the importance of habitat and help build and paint a very special ‘nest box’ that’ll provide valuable habitat for years to come. All materials will be provided and the nest boxes created will be installed throughout Hobart’s Bushlands and further afield. Please BYO paint smock/old clothes for children if they wish to paint. Meet: Site 7, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway Where Our Wild Things Are Fri 12 Apr, 7–9 pm and Fri 26 Apr, 7–9 pm When the sun sets and the night sky is filled with stars many of our native animals emerge from their dens, hollows and homes to spend the night on the hunt and feeding. Join us for a special night walk and discover what’s out there as well as taking home some handy hints for your own night adventures. Bring: A torch and warm clothes. NATURE BASED ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES (CONT.) The AMAZING race Sat 27 Apr, 10–11.30 am It’s an AMAZING world made more AMAZING by getting outside and playing with friends!! Wear your running shoes and tie your laces in double knots. The AMAZING race will sort the clever kookaburras from the rest. Race around the reserve, compete in bush-themed challenges and collect tokens from each event. Only one team can win! Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway Birds on the Move and Nestbox repairs Sun 12 May, 10–11.30 am Hobart’s diverse habitats are home to a great variety of birds but not all spend the whole year here. Of the 60 plus species regularly seen around Hobart, many are more cosmopolitan than you may imagine. Join us as we explore the fascinating movements of some of Tasmania’s migratory birds. For those keen to get hands on helping our feathered friends, we will have a number of nest boxes in need of finishing touches (nailing and painting) before being installed in Bushland Reserves. Meet: Site 2, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway Weaver and Twiners - Aboriginal Cultural Event Sat 25 May, 10–11.30 am Facilitated by the team from nita-education, this workshop builds connections between the oldest living culture on earth and our present day life through conversations, storytelling and working hands-on with natural fibres. Both twining and rope making has been practised by palawa people for more than 2000 generations. Join us to learn more about Tasmanian Aboriginal traditional practices. Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway. Bushcare, Track Care and Crag Care Groups all year - FREE Be part of a great community, learn new skills, meet new people, and help ensure our Bushland Reserves are there for all creatures’ large and small, and future generations. Get involved in bush regeneration, track development and maintenance, and be part of a vibrant and engaged community of locals and visitors. Join us for a real adventure in Hobart’s incredible bushland reserves. We’ll teach you a trick or two on getting the best nature pictures to share with friends and family from the macro world to stunning panoramas. Bring: Please bring you own camera/phone. GO WILD, GO SOLO COST: $8.80 per child Parental supervision is not required. For the safety of your child/teenager and the entire group please ensure your child/teenager is capable to undertake independent and physically challenging activities. Thark Ridge Explorers Thu 18 Apr, 10 am – 3 pm Connections with nature are built on great experiences in nature. Join Rob and Lilly on a hike in the wild country of kunanyi/Mt Wellington. From the Big Bend carpark we’ll head out into the western wilds, through boulder fields and crossing alpine meadows, whilst experiencing anything from sunshine to snow storms. Bring a friend or two and share the adventure. Appreciating Tasmania’s Biodiversity – Atlas of Living Australia Thu 2 May, 6–7pm The Atlas of Living Australia is a free, online database that gives you access to information about Australia’s amazing native plants, animals and other organisms. Join us for an evening presentation and discover how this incredible resource can help you learn more about Hobart’s biodiversity and beyond. Meet: Elizabeth Conference Room, 7 Elizabeth St, Hobart Bushwalking 101 Thu 9 May, 6–7 pm We can help you to plan and enjoy your very own Bush Adventures. We’ll cover the basics of what’s involved in selecting walks, planning routes, being prepared for potential challenges and how to use these walks to deepen your ecological understanding and connections. Meet: Elizabeth Conference Room, 7 Elizabeth St, Hobart Thark Ridge – Devils Throne Guided Walk Sat 11 May, 10 am – 3 pm Join the team on Saturday for a hike into Wellington Park’s remote landscapes. The wild landscapes of Wellington Park are inhabited by a great diversity of remarkable and curious vegetation and wildlife. The connection to our natural environment is at the forefront of what we love about Hobart. As part of International Day of Biological Diversity, Elise Jeffery from the City’s Fire and Biodiversity Team will be presenting an introduction on the newly released ‘Biodiversity Action Plan’. Join Elise and the Bush Adventures team and discover just how the City aims to improve the protection and management of Hobart’s rich biodiversity in its bushland reserves. Meet: Elizabeth Conference Room, 7 Elizabeth St, Hobart Fungi Foray with Genevieve and David Sun 26 May, 10 am – 12.30 pm Join mycologists and authors of ‘A field guide to Tasmanian fungi’, Genevieve Gates and David Ratkowsky, on an autumnal exploration of all things fungi. This year’s fungi foray will take us wandering the forests of Fern Tree on the search of fruiting bodies (mushrooms) and their interconnected, interdependent mycelium networks. Prepare to be amazed by the diversity of forms, colours and species of fungi that live right here in Hobart. Get in fast this foray is LIMITED TO GROUP SIZE OF 10. A refund or credit will be given if this occurs. FOR ALL ACTIVITIES please bring water bottle and healthy snack. Always wear clothing suitable for the environment and conditions. CHILDREN can only be booked into Bush Adventures programs suitable to their age. For our Bush Kids program, out-of-age siblings can attend without charge.
