Welcome to the Bush Adventures Winter Holidays Program 2019. This school holidays it’s all about movement in nature. We’re on the run for a brand new AMAZING race at Waterworks Reserve, pedalling the tracks with a mountain bike riding workshop on the Queens Domain and exploring the wilds of kunanyi/Mt Wellington through discovery walks to some of the mountain’s best-kept secrets. During National Science Week come and explore the ‘Wood Wide Web’ with us at the annual Festival of Bright Ideas and join us in the Sandy Bay Rivulet as we wet our nets looking for micro-bugs with local freshwater ecologist John Gooderham. BOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR ALL BUSH ADVENTURES ACTIVITIES JOIN A BUSH ADVENTURE AND GET OUTSIDE • Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. • Go Wild Go Solo activities are parent free for 10–14 year olds. • Dress for the conditions and bring a snack and water. • Look out for the Bush Adventures flag when arriving at any activity. FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY COST: $5.50 per child Designed to provide opportunities for your family to do something special together. Nest Box Workshop Sat 6 Jul, 10 am – 12 pm It’s not just people who need houses, creatures need a place to call home too! Discover the importance of habitat and build a very special ‘nest box’ for our winged friends. All materials will be provided and the nest boxes you build will be installed throughout Hobart’s bushlands and further afield. Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway. Where Our Wild Things Are Fri 12 Jul, 5–7 pm Why is the bush so quiet at night? Would you make a sound if there were predators lurking nearby ready to make you their next meal? Discover the natural world after sunset on a night walk and get some handy hints for spotting, hearing and tracking creatures at night. Bring: A torch and warm clothes. Meet: Waterworks Reserve, just inside the gate on Waterworks Rd, Ridgeway (please park outside the gate).
FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY (CONT.) Wood Wide Web – Festival of Bright Ideas Sat 10 Aug, 10 am – 5 pm (National Science Week) Explore the “Wood Wide Web” and connections between plants, animals, fungi and bacteria. This family friendly festival will inspire, delight and engage audiences with a diverse program of hands-on activities, science entertainment and celebrity speakers. Meet: Princes Wharf 1, Castray Esplanade, Hobart. Cost: FREE (No booking required). Waterbug Wonderland Wed 14 Aug, 10–11.30 am (National Science Week) Peer into the sparkling world of water. What are those tiny creatures moving about? Catch some, test out your identification skills and explore what these little creatures might grow up to be. Bring: Gumboots or old shoes, and a spare set of clothing in case we get a bit wet! Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway. Bush Stories for Book Week Sun 25 Aug, 10 am – 12 pm Sit under the gum trees while sharing stories of wild creatures, amazing plants and other tales of our natural world. This event is for all ages, we have volunteer readers from the Bushcare Walking Book Club, and an opportunity to create your very own book. Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway. Bushcare and Trackcare All year Volunteer in some amazing bushland around Hobart with fantastic people while learning how to help protect these valuable places. Help regenerate the bush, learn how to build and maintain walking and mountain bike tracks and lots more. Contact Bushcare on 03 6238 2884 for more details. Cost: FREE.
BUSH KIDS COST: $5.50 per child These sessions are designed for specific age groups and include a variety of engaging and educational nature-based activities. 2–5 YEARS Bush Stories Various dates and locations Share stories of wild creatures, amazing plants and other tales of our natural world. There are places to explore and creatures to discover as we wander through the bush and take time to play. 5–7 YEARS Bush Tucker Expedition Thu 11 Jul, 10–11.30 am All people on earth once lived entirely from foods found in the wild, would you have the skills to do the same? Join us for an expedition into the world of edible plants as we explore nature’s gifts and learn about the interconnections that abound. Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway. Bush Explorers – Discovery Walk Mon 15 Jul, 10–11.30 am The evidence is in: exploring the natural world builds kids’ emotional, social and physical development. Bring your curiosity and a sense of wonder (we have plenty to share!) and we’ll learn how life in the bush is filled with amazing, mindboggling connections. Meet: Myrtle Gully Track, end of Old Forest Road, South Hobart.
7–10 YEARS Bike skills on the Queens Domain Mon 8 Jul, 10–11.30 am There’s a great place to ride right in the centre of Hobart. Bring your bike and experience the thrills of the trail, test your skills and zoom down the hills on Hobart’s new Summit Loop Track. Note: All participants need to bring their own fully functional bike with brakes and a helmet that meets Australian standards (AS/NZS 2063). Meet: Queens Domain mountain bike track (car parking above the TasWater water tanks), Summit Rd, Queens Domain. The AMAZING Race Wed 17 Jul, 1–2.30 pm It’s an AMAZING world made more AMAZING by getting outside and playing with friends!! Join us for a brand new AMAZING race that will sort the clever kookaburras from the rest. Race around the reserve, compete in bush-themed challenges and collect tokens from each event. Only one team can win! Meet: Site 9, Waterworks Reserve, Ridgeway.
GO WILD, GO SOLO 10–14 YEARS COST: $8.80 per child Parental supervision is not required. For the safety of your child/teenager and the entire group please ensure your child/teenager is capable of undertaking independent and physically challenging activities. Junction Cabin Expedition Thu 18 Jul, 10 am – 3 pm Nestled in the foothills of kunanyi/Mt Wellington is a small stone cabin with a whole lot of history. Join us for a special expedition to this historic hut where we’ll learn fire making and bush cooking skills around the campfire. Bring: Weather appropriate clothing, including a wind/rain jacket, sturdy closed shoes, small backpack, water bottle and a healthy snack. Meet: The Springs, Wellington Park, kunanyi/ Mt Wellington.
ACTIVITIES FOR ADULTS COST: $8.80 per person Our ‘Activities for Adults’ program is designed to offer rewarding, engaging and relaxing social recreation for mature audiences. Step into History at the Queens Domain Sun 21 Jul, 10 am – 12 pm Join Brendan Lennard, the City of Hobart’s Senior Cultural Heritage Officer, to explore the cultural history of the Queens Domain. From an Aboriginal cultural landscape of the mouheneener people to ‘the government paddock’ and then ‘the people’s park’, the Queens Domain has been used and loved by many over the years. During this easy walk you will discover why the Railway Roundabout has no railway and why the University Rose Gardens is not at the university. Meet: Railway Roundabout fountain, between Brooker Ave and Liverpool St, Hobart. Access from underpasses. A refund or credit will be given if this occurs. FOR ALL ACTIVITIES please bring a drink of water and a healthy snack. Always wear suitable clothing for the environment and conditions. CHILDREN can only be booked into Bush Adventures programs suitable to their age. For our Bush Kids program, siblings outside of the event’s age range can attend without charge. We ask parents/guardians to be mindful of the enjoyment and engagement of others.
