WINTER 2020

WELCOME BACK We are delighted to let you know that we are reopening Mathers House on Monday 29 June 2020. We have missed you all so much and are really looking forward to reconnecting with you soon. We know that this has been a challenging time for many people, particularly those who have been isolated. We have been calling and chatting to those of you that we have phone numbers for, hopefully this has made you still feel a part of the wonderful Mathers House community. Please be assured we will be doing everything we can to make you as safe as possible as you return to the centre. Whilst we were closed we said a sad farewell to Fiona who has now moved on to take up a new position outside of Council. We wish her all the best for the future! Our new face may be familiar to some of you as we warmly welcome back Aisha Paulsen to Mathers House. Aisha previously worked as the Mathers House Support Assistant and has more recently been working as a Community Engagement Officer at the Town Hall. Welcome back Aisha! 108–110 Bathurst Street, Hobart 7000 T. 6234 1441 E. mathersplace@hobartcity.com.au www.hobartcity.com.au

COVID-19 ROADMAP TO RECOVERY NEW MEASURES Hopefully you are aware of the State Government’s Roadmap to Recovery and the expectations for us all to be vigilant for a while longer. We want everyone to be safe, healthy and active in the community, so please look after yourself which in turn will help us to look after you. We will need to introduce some new measures to assist us in keeping us all safe when you come back to Mathers House including the requirement to book in for all programs. You will see signs in each room advising of how many people can be in each space and we will be limiting people to meet these numbers. We will also need to record the names and contact details when attending the facility. Please see below a list of things that you need to be aware of:

Don’t come to the centre if: •

You have COVID-19 and you are still under instructions to quarantine;

You are unwell including with fever (or night sweats/chills) or respiratory symptoms, e.g. shortness of breath, cough or sore throat; or

If you are awaiting the results of a COVID-19 test.

Keeping your distance We know it will be difficult but please remember not to shake hands or exchange physical greetings and stay 1.5 meters apart where possible.

Hygiene • Wash or sanitise your hands on entering the building and also use the sanitisers we have provided when touching different surfaces. • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or use a tissue. Dispose of the tissue in a bin immediately afterwards and then wash your hands. • The toilets within our facilities will be closed to the general public and only utilised by our patrons. The toilets will be cleaned regularly.

• All surfaces will be cleaned regularly through the day – door handles, light switches, tables and chairs after each usage.

• Don’t touch your face, eyes, or mouth – even

MATHERS PLACE NEWS Over the past several months there has been a major construction project in the old Les Lees building that is positioned between Mathers Place and Liverpool Street. Unfortunately this has resulted in the adjacent green area looking like a muddy building site. We are told the works are nearly finished and the green space will be reinstated to its previous glory. We are also happy to let you know that the CWL Craft Shop will reopen on Monday 6 July, Monday to Friday 10 am – 3 pm and the Flower Room will reopen on Monday 13 July with hours Monday to Thursday from 9 am – 1.30 pm.

with gloves.

Download the ‘COVIDSafe’ app If possible, we recommend you download the COVIDSafe app. We can help you to do this if you would like.

PROGRAM NEWS As we reopen, we will gradually get all our programs back up and running. Please be patient with us as this may take a little bit of time depending upon availability of tutors and volunteers. The dining room will be open from 10 am – 2 pm each day. If you are travelling into the city specifically to visit us, it would be great if you could give us a call and let us know you are coming as we have to limit the number of people in each of our rooms. Over the remaining Winter period we will be offering soup, toasties, sandwiches, cakes, snacks and drinks. It is anticipated that by Spring we will be able to have the majority of our volunteers return and we can recommence the delivery of our hot meal service. The majority of our regular programs will be back up and running. They are all dependent on tutor availability, and the ability to socially distance and maintain recommended hygiene practices. Unfortunately we are not able to have any of our larger one off events at the moment, for social distancing reasons. We will be monitoring the requirement and hopefully we may be able to plan some events in Spring. 108–110 Bathurst Street, Hobart 7000 T. 6234 1441 E. mathersplace@hobartcity.com.au www.hobartcity.com.au

NEW ONLINE DEVELOPMENTS We are delighted to announce that we now have a Positive Ageing Facebook private members page. Just search for Mathers House on facebook and then click join group. This is a page for our Mathers House community to join to share news, make suggestions about events or activities coming up, ask for information, etc. As you join, there are a couple of simple membership questions to answer. Please fill them in, so that we know you are a local community member who is 50+, and that you are happy to abide by the group rules. Over the COVID-19 period we have filmed several of our tutors leading their regular exercise classes and uploaded them as videos. You can now also practice your Pilates, Broadway Boogie and other activities at home at your leisure. We have used the break in programs to work on the Positive Ageing page on the Council website. We are aiming to develop this page as a more user friendly page, and less business like. This is a work in progress, however you can already see some extra information, and view some of the videos of exercise classes. Let us know if there is anything you would like to see on the Facebook page or the website.
