Opinions Don’t be an April Fool in this Job Market! Hello Clairemont! As always we here at the Clairemont Times are excited to welcome you back to another fine edition! I have been receiving some E-mails from our loyal readers the past few months and it got me thinking about my column. It’s been fun writing about the holidays and things of that nature, but I really want to be more involved with you as the reader. I would like to change my format and invite all of you to write in with questions, comments, and concerns about yourselves and the community to my E-mail at Johnny.cantanz@yahoo.com. I will choose 2 or 3 questions a month to discuss in my next article. I promise you that every single question, comment, or concern submitted to me will be handled professionally and treated with respect regardless of the topic. Your name will not be used in the article. Without further adieu here is the first edition of my new format. A lot of readers that have been E-mailing me have all had a common theme in their letters and that is the dreaded California job market. You need not worry I have a couple simple tips to assist you in your job search.
level type positions …. keep your resume to one page and do not list everything. One of my pet peeves is receiving a 3 page resume for an entry level position. I refuse to look at it. Why you ask? Because if you have that much experience and education you probably are not going to stick around for little pay in the long term, but I get it. You are applying for anything you think you can do no matter what type of work or pay they are offering. My number one rule on a resume DO NOT LIE! Stick to the facts that are only relevant to the job in question. If you have a masters degree in psychology I probably do not want to hire you to be a cashier at TJ Maxx for fear that you will get a better job the instant you can. And you should take better jobs when you can but the employer of that entry-level position does not need to know about your future plans. The resume is just a doorway to the job interview. Once you are called for an interview it’s a whole new ball game and you can fill in things you might have left off your resume depending on how you feel the interview is going.
I’m going to leave you with some very simple tips while your job searching: Always have your resume on you whenever you leave the house, so many jobs do not get posted and you never know when you might network with the right person. Dress professional when you are applying for a job, even if you are just going to a place to turn a resume in, you never know they may want to interview on the spot. Always, always be friendly and professional whenever you are around the place of business you are applying to. You never know if the person next to you on the bus or at the grocery store is the person that may end up interviewing you (this happened to me once!). Thanks for reading and good luck in your job search. I am more than happy to answer anyone’s personal job seeking questions, so send them in! Johnny Cantanz Johnny.cantanz@yahoo.com
One of my past jobs was an employment case manager. I helped ex-offenders integrate back into society from prison by helping them seek employment. The first step I took with my clients was writing a clear concise resume, the same holds true today for job seekers. I know it sounds simple, and it is, but if you don’t have a good one you can get to the back of the line. At my current position I am in a supervisory role, I interview and hire staff, needless to say a lot of resumes come across my desk. If I find errors or mistakes on the first page you can guarantee I am not going to keep reading. Your resume does not have to be completely immaculate but make sure you read it over and share it with others before you submit it to prospective companies. My advice for persons over 40 with a lot of experience that are applying for entry-

Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego Who We Are Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego is a non-profit animal welfare group that was formed as a network of foster homes in response to the overwhelming number of unwanted and abandoned Chihuahuas in the San Diego area. Today, we help to place all types of Chihuahuas into caring homes.
Our Mission Our mission is to rescue small, abandoned, abused, and handicapped Chihuahuas and provide quality foster care and medical attention for those animals in need. Although all of the Chihuahuas we rescue are special, some have special needs that require a little extra TLC and expense. We try to provide loving homes and special care for these animals as most people would
consider them un-adoptable. They can sometimes become the favorites.......

District 6 News/Events From the Office of Councilmember Lorie Zapf
Marsi Steirer, City of San Diego, Council President Tony Young, Councilmember Lorie Zapf.
Diversifying Our Water Supply San Diego has a water problem. Simply put, we don’t have enough local sources of water to meet demand, and so our region imports more than 85% of our water from other sources. For a long time, importing water was a cost-efficient, reliable option, but a changing political climate and increased environmental concerns are causing those rates to go up. This month, the Metropolitan Water District (MWD), the agency that supplies the majority of water to the San Diego County Water Authority, will vote to increase the cost of our water. In March I joined a group of community and business leaders in a trip to Los Angeles to testify against the proposed rate increases. I believe that MWD needs to reform their spending practices, like we are doing in the City of San Diego, before passing additional cost increases along to their customers. The cost of purchasing water from MWD has already increased by 75% since 2006, and when we take into account the proposed rate increases for 2013 and 2014, that total comes to a 101% increase since 2006. This is simply outrageous. The City of San Diego is working on ways to diversify our supply so that we become less dependent on imported water. One option the City is studying is a Water Reuse Program, similar to a project that is already up and running in Anaheim. San Diego’s Water
Purification Demonstration Project will determine if reservoir augmentation is a good option for San Diego. According to the City’s Public Utilities Department, “reservoir augmentation is a multi-step process that includes using advanced water purification technology on highly treated wastewater, sending the purified water to a reservoir to blend with existing water supplies, and treating the blended water again to be distributed as drinking water.” I had the opportunity to tour the Advanced Water Purification Facility with Council President Young last month, and saw for myself how safe this drinking water will be. The stateof-the-art treatment process ensures that water is safe, clean, and is purified to a level similar to distilled water. No water from this project is currently being sent to our water supply and we have a few more years of testing and certifications from the California Department of Public Health before anything changes with our drinking water. If you are interested in finding out more about reservoir augmentation or the Water Purification Demonstration Project, the City is offering free tours of the Advanced Water Purification Facility. For more information or to schedule a tour, please call (619) 533-7572 or email purewatersd@sandiego.gov.

Parents/Students Learn at Canyon Classroom Nathan Bogardt was at San Diego Mesa College to chaperone his daughter Nicole, 8, during this year’s Canyon Classroom. But what surprised him was that he and his wife Tammie learned as well. “I learned so much….” said Bogardt of Canyon Classroom, “I live so close to this canyon, yet know so little about it!” Nearly 60 second and third graders from Holmes Elementary School – and their parent chaperones – were this year’s attendees of the fourth Canyon Classroom to be held at Mesa College during Canyon Day. Organized chaos led teams of children through a half-day of activities ranging from creating dream catchers, a potting exercise at the Mesa College organic garden, a lesson on the animals and plants that live in the canyon (and a surprise visit from the lamas, ferrets, miniature horse and other animals that live at the Animal Health Technology facility!), a Kumeyaay pottery activity and more. Of course, there
was a tour of the Canyon, and even visits with Mesa College President Pamela Luster, canyon expert Louise Battle, and Kenneth Nakayama from Councilmember Lorie Zapf’s office. “This is such a fun and wonderful opportunity for everyone involved,” said Canyon Classroom organizer Professor Laurie Lorence. “The children learn, the parents learn, and my student teachers get to interact and apply the lessons we teach them in the classroom.” Canyon Classroom is part of Canyon Day at Mesa College. The Canyon Cleanup slated for March 17 was called off due to rain. The Saturday event will not be rescheduled this year due to conflicts with other community events in Linda Vista and Clairemont. To have your school be considered for Canyon Classroom in 2013, please email lheil@sdccd.edu.

School News
Calling on All Clairemonsters To my neighbors & fellow residents of Clairemont: My name is Ted Krupp and I am asking for your help. Many of you, especially in Northern Clairemont, may be familiar with Walt Whitman Elementary School on
Appleton Rd. I live close to the school and driving by I always wonder why the condition of the school’s grounds are in such disrepair. A space like this not only presents extraordinary opportunities for Whitman’s students, but also for us as a growing com-
munity. It could be a place where students learn athletics and be a safe place to play before and after school. It could be a place that hosts our children’s sports leagues, community events or perhaps even farmer’s markets. It could be a catalyst that drives redevelopment initiatives and sparks new interest in Clairemont’s homes and businesses. Unfortunately, none of this exists because the area is not well kept, left as a barren field of dirt, rocks and in some areas broken glass. At the start of the year I got in touch with the school’s principal to see how I could help. I was informed that improving the grounds has been a long standing goal of Whitman Elementary; however, due to decreasing budgets and other educational funding issues, the school’s resources are completely allocated towards core educational needs. The faculty at Whitman is really quite extraordinary. My visit triggered a great deal of enthusiasm, and among them the common theme was doing whatever possible to help their students.
Many of them see the great potential of this site and believe playground improvement would help the students in so many ways, from enrollment and participation to safety and morale. Together we have been applying for grants, reaching out in the community and looking for ways to raise funds in order to create a new field and revamp the playground. This effort has been exciting for all involved, but we realize that in order to make a real difference we need the help of the Clairemont community — or Clairemonsters as I like to call them. A safe, well-maintained, play area would not only be a blessing for the school but for our neighborhood as well. If you have ideas, know someone who might be interested, or would just like to lend a hand, please email me at whitmanfieldproject @gmail.com. Below is a satellite picture of the school from Google Maps. Most appreciative, Ted - Proud Clairemonster

How ‘Bout Them Padres! Stop reading all of the negative press about the Padres and get excited that baseball is here and we have a team to support in sunny San Diego! Opening Day is so close I can smell the hot dogs and I am absolutely thrilled about it! Make sure you check out the Padres’ website and start ordering your tickets today; they have some really decent package deals. I have already purchased some myself. Regardless of how the Padres play you cannot argue with the fact that baseball is fun. We have a beautiful stadium in Petco Park and San Diego has the fewest rainouts in all of baseball. If you don’t believe check out the forecast for the Midwest during the opening week of baseball, you can usually see the player’s breath on TV. Let’s take a look at how the Padres’ roster is going to shake out to start the season. Keep in mind that a lot of the players are currently rehabbing and could open the season on the DL Starting Rotation: Tim Stauffer Cory Luebke Edison Volquez Anthony Bass Dustin Moseley Bullpen: Huston Street Ernesto Frieri
such as newly acquired OF Carlos Quentin and 2B Orlando Hudson. Plus, no one ever really knows who is going to be in a team’s bullpen prior to the season, not even the relief pitchers themselves! Here is the opening day roster as I see it here in late March:
Clayton Richard Luke Gregorson Andrew Cashner Micah Owings Joe Thatcher/Brad Brach Infielders: Chase Headley Jason Bartlett Orlando Hudson
Yonder Alonso Everth Cabrera Jesus Guzman Outfielders: Cameron Maybin Will Venable Carlos Quentin Mark Kotsay Chris Denorfia Catchers: Nick Hundley John Baker I hope to see you at Petco Park this season! Johnny Cantanz Johnny.cantanz@yahoo.com
