Massage Envy Spa at Clairemont Town Square Hosting Annual Salvation Army Toy Drive
ESCAPe! With Friends of Tecolote Canyon
Helping families in need this holiday season
So much of what happens in our lives today was only the stuff of comic books and science fiction in the 1950s. Cell phones, microwaves, personal computers and flat screen televisions were not even dreamed of in those days.
And certainly not much in Clairemont is as it was 60 years ago. Our neighborhoods were just a few years old, but growing rapidly. There was no Clairemont Square, and San Diegans were just learning about how to incorporate retail and shopping into a suburban community. There are almost no stores or businesses still operating in Clairemont from that time. One thing that is the same, however, is Clairemont Hilltoppers Little League. When the first game was played in 1957, no one could have known of the legacy that was being started. In the six decades since, thousands and thousands
Massage Envy Spa in Clairemont, in partnership with The Salvation Army, will be helping struggling San Diego families this holiday season by hosting a toy drive along with each of its 27 Massage Envy Spa locations throughout San Diego County. Each year, The Salvation Army works with Massage Envy Spa to make holiday magic happen. By inviting local businesses, schools, churches, clubs and all other community organizations to host the toy drive, they are able to increase the collection of toys for children of all ages. “Massage Envy Spa is excited to be the first business to pay it forward and step up to the challenge,” explains Dennis Conklin, Regional Developer.“Massage Envy sees approximately 40,000 customers each month across each of the 27 open San Diego locations. We are hoping to make a huge difference in the lives of many this holiday season.” Each year, the need for toys grow as parents work several jobs to pay rent and provide food, often not having anything left over for special gifts for their children. Last year alone, The Salvation Army provided 35,400 toys (in addition to stocking stuffers) for 15,000 local children. The Salvation Army’s goal for 2015 is to provide 44,000 toys to 19,000 children countywide. The Massage Envy Spa toy drive is one way to help
The non-profit organization, Friends of Tecolote Canyon (FOTC), has made it their mission since the 1970’s to establish and nurture the connection between children and nature in Tecolote Canyon. In today’s world of technology, FOTC is making an effort to keep children in touch with nature through our outdoor education program, ESCAPe! (Environmental Stewards Canyon Program). Funded by grants and donations, ESCAPe! is staffed by a team of trained naturalists who share their knowledge while encouraging students’ natural curiosity through canyon walks and hands on outdoor learning experiences. Student responses such as,“It smells so good in the canyon” or “Wow, this is incredible-this is real-not like in a video game!” energize our efforts to influence the next generation. In the 2014-2015 school year, ESCAPe! led over 500 children from nine schools on trails

From the Publisher By Chris O’Connell
First off, let me start with Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays, here’s hoping 2016 will bring joy and good health to all, may 2016 be the best year yet! I am not one for looking back, but rather looking forward. However, 2015 was a great year. I met many new people in the neighborhoods, forged more lifelong friendships through this little paper and the newspaper continues to grow. I have said it time and time again many people have a part in the publishing of The Clairemont Times each month. Thank you to all who participate, contribute, read and advertise in the paper without the help of many this paper would not be possible. I want to congratulate my good pal Bill Swank he of the monthly column “Squaremont”. When he inquired over a year ago about the possibility of writing for the paper I had no idea what was in store. Well, recently Swanky was awarded an Excellence in Journalism Award from the San Diego Press Club for a piece he wrote in this paper “Clairemont, 1954”. His piece was awarded in the Non-Daily newspaper: History category. Thank you Bill, you are a good man, a good friend and a hard worker. The Holidays are upon us and I have a couple shopping tips one Shop Local!

Some of What is In This Edition There is some great information in this edition. The Chowhound (p12) shared a family recipe that will be on our holiday table this year for sure. If you are into Christmas Lights there is a story (p8) with a long history in the Clairemont neighborhood. For all you Linda Vistans there is a community event on (p15) and also one of Linda Vista’s longtime ambassadors was recently recognized (p10). The above just scratches the surface enjoy the pages ahead. At our luncheon, we will pass ‘the stocking’ for donations for the Storefront, a service for homeless youths. News About the Streets
eliminating a vehicular traffic lane in either direction on Clairemont Dr. and also new striping for a bicycle lane in either direction. The parking would remain the same in both directions. Residents along Clairemont Drive were informed via a mailer in addition; this item was posted on the agenda 36 hours prior to the CCPG meeting. When I posted on the Clairemont Times’ Facebook & Twitter accounts overall sentiment was 50/50 regarding the change. While this change was presented as a Safety Improvement Project the overall feeling was this was a “add a bike lane and remove a car lane project”. The other street update at the CCPG was regarding Moraga Avenue. The roundabouts which were too expensive at first 18 months ago and then approved have now been put on hold for “lack of funding”. What traffic calming measures for Moraga Ave are in place? I guess we will find out in 2016. There is no CCPG meeting in the month of December; the next scheduled meeting is January 19th.

The November Clairemont Community Planning Group meeting had some interesting information regarding a couple busy streets in Clairemont. An item on the agenda was “Clairemont Drive Resurfacing and Corridor Safety Improvements” during the presentation from a City of San Diego City Engineer information was given on a safety improvement project on Clairemont Drive from Joplin Ave, which is just South of Clairemont Mesa Blvd, to Chippewa Ct just north of Balboa Ave. Statistics on crashes, speeders and overall calls to the City by concerned neighbors was what prompted the City to look at making changes. Additionally, since the road was being resurfaced, it was determined by the City now would be a good time to implement some new action. The changes presented were
numerous community organizations since 1994, including the Linda Vista Recreation Council, the Linda Vista Town Council, the Linda Vista Planning Group, and the Linda Vista Neighborhood Watch. Mr. Beckham also contributed to
many community events such as the Kearny Mesa Kiwanis, Mile of Quarters for Children’s Hospital, Linda Vista Boys and Girls Club, the Kearny Alumni Association, Linda Vista Community Reunion Fair, and the Linda Vista Multicultural Fair. Born and raised in Linda Vista, Doug played Little League and Adult Softball, coached baseball at Tecolote Park, and contributed to the development of the Melinda Appling Memorial Pavilion, saving Skateworld, and the addition of the upcoming Linda Vista Skate Park. In addition to serving his community, Doug served with honor in the Vietnam War as a Marine Engineer. Mr. Beckham was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Cross of Gallantry from the Republic of Vietnam. “It is particularly fitting that we honor Doug the day before Veteran’s Day, when we honor all our service men and women for the sacrifices they have made for our freedoms,” Sherman said.“Doug has not just dedicated his life to his community, but also to our Country.” Contact my office: 202 C Street, MS #10A San Diego, CA 92101 Phone: (619) 236-6677 Email: scottsherman@sandiego.gov

From the Desk of Assembly Speaker Toni G. Atkins Before each New Year many of us make resolutions, both personal and professional, as we start to think about what we want to accomplish that year. I’m no different. Some of my goals are ongoing – such as my desire to end veteran homelessness – and some are new, but what they all have in common is that they reflect my desire
passed Proposition 41 in 2014, there are still many veterans without housing. We are working on this issue throughout the nation and making real progress, which I am confident will continue in the New Year. • I’d like to see some Snoopy license plates on the Road! to help others. Here are some of the things I’d like to see happen in 2016: • One of the greatest triumphs of the 2015 legislative session was creating California’s first state Earned Income Tax Credit, which can benefit 2 million Californians, lift 50,000 people out of poverty and lift 50,000 people out of deep poverty. Getting as many people as possible to sign up and benefit from this tax credit would make my year. • Growing up in a military family and living in San Diego, it’s really important for me to support our veterans. A Tribute to Clairemont’s French Community
Recent events in Paris call for global solidarity Innocent civilians were massacred in a French theater and at a French café while bombs exploded in a nearby stadium. Parisians were horrified at the bloodletting and carnage. The years were 1940 to 1944 also known as the Vichy regime or Vichy France and now history repeats itself. The City of Light under siege. How sad that the last generation of this great country, including the few
remaining members of the Free French who so gallantly aided the allies during WWII should live once more under the cloud of terror. Paris is indeed burning. In perhaps one of the greatest speeches of the twentieth century French general Charles de Gaulle from London so eloquently said,“France will not capitulate.” My Mother having lived on the shores of the English Channel recounted horrific tales of bodies falling from the sky, bombs raining on her home and my Grandfather detained by German soldiers as his seven
to less demand for poachers who harm elephants and rhinos. California leads the way for our nation on many issues, including economic growth, social justice and climate action, and I would really like to see other states following our example on AB 96 to help eliminate trade in ivory or rhino horn. Some of these resolutions are easier than others, but I’ll continue working hard to lift people out of poverty, house veterans, fund museums and help prevent the extinction of
wildlife. I enter 2016 with a sense of hope that as I join with my colleagues in the legislature, we can help build a better California. That’s how we should begin every year – full of hope. I also want to wish Clairemont a very Happy Holiday season with family, friends and loved ones, and the best possible start to the New Year.
children hid in an abandoned farmhouse. One brother was taken as POW and sent to the salt mines. Another uncle with the Free French saw his parents shot in the family garden. Now seventy years later, many of these French citizens in their final years must suffer the same fate. This is the great untold tragedy. But the new war on terror is not new if one considers the Muslim incursion into Frankish lands during the time of Charlemagne. The endless war, perhaps? We must resist all temptation to label unfairly those innocents within the Islamic community. Only time will abort their cruel mission through a change of heart and mind. I seriously doubt if military might alone will bring peace. I lived through the terror in France during the Seventies and Eighties while
a student at the “Sorbonne” and triathlon competitor. The hatred of a few extremists that I encountered was real and palpable. There will always exist those radicals bent on destruction from both the political right and left. The citizens of this community ought to recognize our French neighbors and remember that all of us stand united against any form of terrorism. There are many French citizens having an occasional pastry at Arely’s in the Clairemont Square so stop by and say “bonjour”.You may even make a newfound friend. Be nice, do good deeds and don’t be a stranger as we at The Clairemont Times value your participation.

You know the holidays are just around the corner when you see cranberries in the produce section and eggnog next to the milk…it’s this Chowhound’s favorite time of year! When I think of the holidays, my favorite dish is actually the cranberry sauce. Not that jelly-like stuff that comes in a can, but homemade, chunky and delicious cranberry relish. It’s so good that I have it for breakfast with my muffin and coffee while I contemplate the perfect spot for the tree and vowing not to put off holiday shopping until the last minute. As we head into the holidays, I decided to share one of my favorite recipes: Chowhound’s Cranberry Relish. Happy Holidays… woof! Chowhound’s Cranberry Relish Ingredients 1 12-ounce bag cranberries 3/4 cup sugar 1 cup fresh orange juice (optional: 1-2 Tbsp of Grand Marnier) 1 stick of cinnamon I cup apricot preserves 1 teaspoon grated orange peel 1 seedless orange, all peel and pith cut away, seeded and fruit diced (or one 11oz. can of mandarin oranges, drained) ¼ cup dried apricots, diced ¼ cup dried cherries 1 8oz. can of crushed pineapple, drained Directions • Combine first four ingredients in medium saucepan; bring to boil, then reduce to medium-low heat, stirring until sugar dissolves. Keep a watchful eye that mixture doesn’t boil over. • Cook until cranberries are tender and mixture thickens, stirring occasionally, about 10 minutes. • Add apricot preserves and stir until melted and completely incorporated, about 2 minutes.

New Year’s Resolutions for a Healthy Planet: by Susan Lewitt
Celebrate this holiday season with meaningful New Year’s resolutions that help improve our world: 1. Recycle. Buy Recycled. Conserve. 2. Reuse. Repurpose. Repair 3. Support conservation by SD Zoo, Surfrider Foundation and others. (Amazon smiles donates to your chosen organization.) 4. Print two sided copies or booklet mode 5. Pick up dog poop. 6. Get rain barrels for saving roof runoff, or at least channel the downspouts into a garden area, not the street. Landscape with bioswales and curb cuts. 7. Use your disposal less. It isn’t for trash. 8. Take short showers,. Turn the water off when you are soaping, shampooing or conditioning. Toilets: When it’s brown flush it down, Yellow? Let it mellow! 9. Get rooftop solar 10. Get efficient sprinklers. Drip isn’t for natives. The Hunter MP rotator nozzle waters very slowly, allowing water to soak in, not run off
carrying pollutants into sewers and ultimately the ocean. 11. Use less herbicides, pesticides and fungicides. Control pests naturally. 12. Don’t plant invasive species. Replace invasive species with drought tolerant native. Include milkweed for monarchs. 13. Bring reusable bags to all stores. Chico bags (washable and compact) are my favorite, available on line through places like Amazon. When you get bags from stores reuse, recycle or donate them to a Thrift stores. 14. Buy organic nonGMO. Avoid high fructose corn syrup. 15. Use reusables for homemade lunches including lunch bags, boxes, utensils and containers. Bring reusable containers and ice packs in coolers for restaurant leftovers. 16. Eat less meat. Try vegan places like Native Foods and Loving Hut. More are on line. 17. For take-out food, don’t take items you won’t use, like plastic utensils. Due to health regulations, once touched, they’re trash. 18. Drive less. Use walking, biking, busses and carpools more. Happy Healthy Holiday Season to All
