Clairemont Community Service Agency Serving San Diego for Over 39 Years Back in July, I received an email from Allan Peck, President of the Clairemont Kiwanis group with the subject “Service

Opportunity”. Mr. Peck wrote,“The Clairemont Community Service Agency (CCSA) needed some “muscle” moving boxes for food packers on July 28 from 9-11 am at the center. I had checked the email from my phone and kind of forgot about it until the Friday before the food packing day. Not knowing where to go or really anything about CCSA I researched it and realized first where the location was and then what it was all about. When I arrived at the house on the corner of Clairemont Drive &

The mission of the CCSA is to provide services to singles, couples, families, the elderly as well as the disabled. The volunteers at the center are there to help those who need the most basic of necessities food and clothing. For those who want it, and ask for it there is counseling services to help assist people in regaining their independence. As you might imagine it takes a lot for people to ask for help for themselves and/or for their family. The CCSA is there no matter the circumstance or your past history ultimately the goal is to move clients in a positive direction and be selfsufficient. Dispose of Old Prescription Drugs Safely & Securely Recently the County of San Diego Board of Supervisors approved the placement of a “prescription drug drop box” in the main lobby of the County Administration Building. This new box is in conjunction with the already 22 boxes at SD Sheriff’s Stations around the county. If you are looking for room in your medicine cabinet or a hall closet, chances are you have some leftover prescription drugs from a cold or operation many moons ago. While it easy to just throw them away who

knows if children or pets could access them. This is an easy way to eliminate the guesswork and dispose of pills safely and securely. County Administration Building 1600 Pacific Coast Highway, San Diego, 92101

speakers to their meetings to share the CCSA story and needs and through financial donations as well. The exposure through these organizations and churches is what helps bring donations to the agency. As quick as the supplies come in they are just as quickly dispersed to those in need. The tax deductible monetary donations which come in are quickly spent on restocking the shelves of non-perishable goods and basic hygiene products. The Service Opportunity After brief introductions with some of the other volunteers, Clairemont Kiwanis members, we were all quickly instructed on what to do, how to do it and what goes where and why. As I blindly helped other strangers setting up folding tables, I realized there was a method to the madness, only I was not seeing the full picture just yet. With a regimented determination, a staff member named Lydia requested us to bring cases of pasta sauce, cereal, canned fruit, dry pasta and rice from the storage location. I soon realized what Mr. Peck meant by “they needed some muscle moving boxes”. Back and forth we all went placing the boxes as instructed in just the right spot “because if we put it there” we

were advised it will be in the way once the process gets going. After delivering supplies to the tables, and under the tables, I then noticed the arrival of a group of at least 8-10 teenagers. They too had the look of confusion same as what I had experienced not 15 minutes earlier. The picture was becoming clearer. The “food packers” were here. I later learned they were from the Key Club at Clairemont High School. The Key Club group received their instructions and everyone had a station on the assembly line. Their job was to place one of each ingredient into the brown bag and pass it down the line. Lydia instructed the muscle “to stop standing around” and start bringing all the full bags into the garage and stack them three high. “We need to utilize all the space we have” she said. After being in the back yard handling boxes I had no idea another group of volunteers had arrived; Girl Scout Troop #3814 from Northminster Church were now helping on another assembly line project in the driveway. This house on the corner, I had never given much thought to as I passed by it so many times. It was like a factory and I, along with what was now about 25 strong were experiencing the inner workings firsthand. From setting up and carrying the supplies to the tables, to filling bags, to

stacking bags in the garage, to breaking down and recycling the boxes, folding and putting the tables away we were done in 90 minutes. Unknowingly we had all just helped assist 150 San Diego families who are struggling and in great need of food assistance. Now every time I go past that corner house it reminds of a beautiful, sunny Saturday morning in July when a group of strangers came together to help another group of strangers. I had no idea what to expect when I received the email titled “Service

Opportunity” consider this a forward to your inbox if you have some time or resources to give. For more information on how you can help please visit www.ccsasandiego.org or call (858) 274-2273. CCSA is always in need of donations whether it is your time, food donations, or monetary donations, everything helps. A can of tuna, a jar of peanut butter, even $10 would be a great help, and you can make a big difference for those who are currently struggling because of a lost job or those struggling to meet their bills.

Are Your Finances Stressing You Out? by Jim Ligelbach, CFP®, ChFC®, CLU®, CASL® Lisa A. Saxton, CFP®

With the economic downturn, many of us are stressed out dealing with 401k’s turning into 201k’s, pay cuts, and even job losses. Studies have shown that people dealing with financial stress are more likely to suffer from high blood pressure, severe depression, back pain, headaches, digestive problems, and heart attacks; situations that can keep you off work, at the doctors and add to financial pressures. In addition, having financial worries on your mind can affect your job performance – distracting your focus and preventing you from doing your best. How do you get back on track to retire and live the dream, whatever dream that might be? Some are turning to cash; however, with inflation at 3.5%, $1,000 today would be worth only $467 in 25 years, and would be further reduced to $344 in 35 years. Here are a few simple steps to get back on track: Step 1 - Save, Save, and Save Live within your means, save, and avoid the big mistakes are the 3 common traits of all financially successful families according to Thomas Stanley, PHD and author of “The Millionaire Next Door”.

Step 2 – Review Review what you have to determine how much income you have from fixed sources such as Social Security and pension accounts versus assets that you will use to create income such as IRAs, 401(k), Roth IRAs, and taxable accounts. Step 3 – Plan Develop a strategy to fill the gap, if any, and ensure that the savings are structured to last throughout your retirement. If you would like to learn more about structuring your finances in order to achieve a successful retirement, consider attending one of the following FREE retirement planning seminars: September 19th at 5:30pm, Or October 3rd at 5:30pm 3131 Camino Del Rio North, Suite 1200 San Diego, CA 92108 RSVP: lsaxton@metlife.com or 619641-3649 AP-AOL Health Poll- Debt Stress: The Toll Owing Money Takes on the Body, 2008. Before investing in these products, you should carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses, as well as their investment options. Earthquake Swarm, Tropical Storm Isaac Are Reminders to be Prepared September is National Preparedness Month Earthquakes felt across Southern California recently made some stop and think about what they would do if natural disaster struck close to home. People are generally aware of the kind of preparation they should make in the event of an earthquake or wildfire. Yet only about a third of households have a disaster emergency plan that all members of their family know about or an emergency supply kit in their home, according to a national study done earlier this year. When preparing for an emergency situation, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department Assistant Chief Ronnie Hicks says “It’s best to think first about the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth.” Recommendations for a Basic Emergency Supply Kit • Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation • Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food • Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both • Flashlight and extra batteries

Boys & Girls Clubs of San Diego Sponsor Food Service Program The program will operate from September 4 through June 18 at all of our San Diego locations including Clairemont & Linda Vista. Free snacks will be made available to all attending children less than 19

• Cell phone and charger • First aid kit • Whistle to signal for help • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place • Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities • Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food) • Local maps There is a wealth of material online to help people be informed and become prepared about earthquakes. In addition to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department website http://www.sandiego.gov/fire/safety/ti ps/earthquake.shtml, the City of San Diego Office of Homeland Security website www.sandiego.gov/ohs has an “Alerts and Notifications” link for earthquakes on its homepage. The San Diego County website, www.sdcountyemergency.com has updates on the earthquakes in the Brawley area as well as information on preparedness. The U.S. Geological Survey website at http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/ has real-time reporting on earthquakes in the United States. years of age without regard to race, color, national origin, sex or disability. New Neighborhood Salon – Upscale Services

The Avati Salon is a NEW upscale salon for women, men and children, near the corner of Morena Blvd and Avati Drive, just down the street from the Morena Blvd. Costco. Even though it is a new salon, with a new name, the foundation of this salon spans years. Denise Mayer, the owner of the salon, has owned two salons in the downtown La Jolla area and was partners in a third salon in UTC.All of these salons amount to over 20 years of experience in salon ownership, plus Denise has over 38 years as a stylist and Master Hair Color Specialist. After 6 years with a partner, Denise decided that in order for her to design, maintain and update the salon the way she wanted it, and with the people and chemistry she wanted in the salon, she needed to open her own salon once again. After opening Avati she was immediately joined by long term friends, all

professionals, and all with years of experience, that all wanted the same kind of upscale progressive, working environment. Avati is small at the moment but will be expanding later this year into the suite next door making it 2 _ times its current size, adding more hair and nail technicians, expanding the facial room, adding a massage therapist, and more.We have one stylist chair available at this time for booth rent but once we open the second suite we will have a few more stations open for hair and nail services. If you are looking to relocate or know someone who is looking for the right salon, please have them contact Denise. Avati has some of the most creative hair stylists. They cater to women, men and children. They will strive to provide the best services, a quality product offering, and an enjoyable, comfortable and relaxed environment for your visits. Specialized services include up-dos, professional hair coloring, weddings, and the Yuko hair straightening system.Avati also has a very nice selection of hair care products that can be purchased. Avati also has one of the leading estheticians in San Diego, Kiyoko. Kiyoko comes from Japan and has been in the San Diego area for many years and has strong ties to the Japanese community.Along with her awesome facials

and overall skin care services, Kiyoko also offers hair care and air brush makeup services as well as Kimonos for authentic Japanese weddings. The salon also has a few of the areas most talented nail care providers for different kinds of manicures and pedicures, color changes, nail design and exfoliation treatments. The Avati Salon is not just established as a business to make money,Avati wants to participate and give back to the community as well.Avati is working with other businesses in the center to beautify and enhance the center to make it more inviting to visitors and regulars to the center. Recently Clairemont had their Annual Family Day at a park on Clairemont drive and we were there. We set up a booth, had demonstrations, had samples to give away and had raffles for products and free hair services at the salon. California Baseball Heats Up! Hello ClaireMonsters! Let’s do a quick recap of the torrid, whirlwind of transactions made in the month of August in California baseball: Friday, August 3rd: - The Oakland Athletics trade catcher Kurt Suzuki and cash to the Washington Nationals for catcher David Freitas. - The Philadelphia Phillies trade starting pitcher Joe Blanton to the Los Angeles Dodgers for cash. Wednesday, August 15th: - The San Francisco Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera gets suspended for 50 games after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). Tuesday, August 21st: - The Arizona Diamondbacks trade shortstop Stephen Drew to the Oakland Athletics for infielder Sean Jamieson. Wednesday, August 22nd: - The Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Bartolo Colon gets suspended for 50 games after testing positive for performance enhancing drugs (PEDs). Thursday, August 23rd: - The San Diego Padres release shortstop Jason Bartlett. Saturday, August 25th: - The Boston Red Sox trade outfield-

er Carl Crawford, starting pitcher Josh Beckett, 1st baseman Adrian Gonzalez and utility infielder Nick Punto to the Los Angeles Dodgers for 1st baseman James Loney and 4 prospects; right handed pitchers Allen Webster and Rubby De La Rosa, and leftfielder/1st baseman Jerry Sands and infielder Ivan De Jesus. There was a lot of other under the radar moves that made by the 5 California baseball clubs this August but these definitely are the highlights. As you can see from the above the Giants lost a valuable piece of their offense in Melky Cabrera, whom by the way was and still is potentially in the running for the National League batting title, which I feel shouldn’t be allowed. The Dodgers not only attempted to take advantage of the Giants loss they decided to all out sink the Giants ship. The Dodgers not only put themselves in a strong position for the playoffs this year but have really locked up their roster for the next couple of seasons. To be completely honest with you I am very nervous for the Padres the next couple of seasons in the National League West. As if the Rockies, Diamondbacks, and Giants

weren’t bad enough now we have to deal with the return of Adrian Gonzalez to Petco Park about 12 times a year while wearing Dodger Blue instead of Padre Camouflage. Meanwhile the American League California teams have been duking it out as well. The Angels traded for starting pitcher Zack Greinke in July and he hasn’t exactly panned while the team continues to fall behind the Texas Rangers and Oakland Athletics. Most will state that the Athletics suffered a blow by losing pitcher Bartolo Colon but the Athletics have the pitching depth to sustain that kind of loss. So to sum it all up from our little corner of the baseball world: - The Angels continue to falter - The Dodgers keep getting better - The Padres keep....well.....just kind of hanging’ around - Johnny Cantanz, johnny.cantanz@yahoo.com

Founders’ Cup The 1st Annual Founders’ Cup Golf Tournament is coming up on September 30th which benefits the Academy of Business and Technology Foundation. I was fortunate enough to meet a few of the members of the foundation at Clairemont Family Day as well as others at their Board of Directors meeting recently. The individuals involved in this foundation are truly passionate about their work, which is helping and mentoring students in the AOBT program at Clairemont High School. If you are looking to give back to the community involvement with the AOBT is a great way to help local teens. The last I heard, there is still room for golfers as well as sponsorship opportunities. For more information, please see the flyer on page 8.

The Clairemont Times is proud to sponsor a tee box in the golf tournament.

New Walk ‘App’ Can Make Communities More Walkable Regional Walk Scorecard To Map Improvements For Future Funding WalkSanDiego is developing a Regional Walk Scorecard to rate walkability in the region’s 18 cities as well as the City of San Diego individual neighborhoods. Field work for the project is the most important component and will require hundreds of volunteers around the region to input data describing what it’s like to walk in their neighborhood. Data collected from the volunteers will create a map of projects for future funding. To take advantage of the best technology,WalkSanDiego has created a smart phone WALK APP for volunteers to use to collect data. Preferred data collection dates are Saturday and Sunday, September 15-16.The actual time required for volunteers can be 30

minutes or several hours as they desire. Manual data entry forms will be available for volunteers who don’t have a smart phone. Jim Stone, Executive Director of WalkSanDiego, states,“The walk phone app project is a big deal for us and has generated interest among residents, health professionals, and government officials around the region because of the importance of walking to health and neighborhood quality of life.” WalkSanDiego is a regional, grassroots organization formed in 1998 and dedicated to making our neighborhoods more walkable.Through educational events, training, advocacy, and work with local governments,WalkSanDiego is working to reclaim our streets and blocks through improved streetscape designs, accessible walking paths, and traffic calming measures. If you would like more information on this topic or would like to know how to volunteer, please contact Robert Felix (rfelix@walksandiego.org) or Kathleen Ferrier (kferrier@walksandiego.org).

Farmers’ Market Dinner For 4

It’s a common question, what’s for dinner? Recently we shopped at the Morena District Farmers’ Market to plan a simple, fresh, dinner for 4 adults. *All ingredients except mozzarella were purchased at the farmers’ market

1 pound Mexican white shrimp (Poppa’s Fresh Fish Company) 9 ounces of lemon parsley pasta (Pappardelle’s Pasta) 2 green onions medium chop (Blue Heron Farm) 2 cloves of garlic finely chopped (Blue Heron Farm) Generous amount of cherry tomatoes to your liking (Blue Heron Farm) Fresh mozzarella (optional) Fresh basil leaves for garnish (Blue Heron Farm) Cook pasta until desired taste Heat skillet with a tablespoon olive oil, add shrimp and green onion. Sauté for 2 minutes as shrimp begins to turn pink, add garlic and cherry tomatoes, continue stirring until you can begin to smell the garlic, usually less than a minute. Pour over cooked pasta and add cubes of fresh mozzarella and garnish with torn basil leaves and remaining chopped green onion. Salt and pepper as desired.

Dessert Grilled White Peaches (Smit Orchards) Preheat coals until gray ash forms, for gas grills high 15 mins 8 white peaches pitted, cut in half Spray or oil grill to prevent sticking Cook for 4-5 minutes grill closed Serve warm

For a list of local farmers’ markets see page 5.

New Mural Shines Bright At Clairemont Community Garden Sarah Conley, the creative force behind the mural, and with help from many volunteers who took on paint-

ing duties, has brought even more color to the fast growing garden on the grounds of Northminster Church. In May the area was grass and concrete and now local residents, church members and preschoolers from Northminster are all tending

to their own personal raised beds. Tomatoes, corn, kale, strawberries, herbs, cucumbers, many varieties of peppers, zucchini, wax beans and much more are all thriving. The garden has become so popular

there is a waiting list. A truly beautiful addition to our neighborhood!
