Back to School

11

Summer is over and school is back in session, for kids, high school and college students its back to or maybe starting a new routine, a new year, new dreams. For us older working adults and parents well it’s just September. It got me thinking of the old saying,“you are never too old to learn.” Recently, I toured the newly built San Diego

Continuing Education North City Campus on Aero Drive; it is a beautiful, modern high tech building located directly next door to the old campus. The new campus was made possible by the voters of San Diego who approved Proposition S and N, which supported new construction for the San Diego Community College District. The building and its many classrooms are ultra-state of the art, from the computer labs to the indoor/outdoor study areas this new campus has a clean crisp flow conducive to learning. Having taken a couple classes in the past at the old campus, I can attest to the positive experience. Maybe you are looking for a refresher class or want to study something completely new. From business classes to computer learning, maybe photography or a nutrition class there really is a wide array of opportunities to learn under the Continuing Education umbrella. As an added bonus many classes are free and if not they are affordable. I would suggest a visit over to the Aero Drive campus pick up a class catalog or even easier visit online at www.sdce.edu there is bound to be something that will pique your interest. Remember you are never too old to learn.

SDG&E Rates Set to Increase Up to 39 Percent This summer, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved SDG&E to implement a rate hike that will drive homeowner’s utility bills up by as much as 39 percent. Some customers of the utility will be paying hundreds more per year for the same level of usage. It is estimated to cost homeowners and businesses over $500 million dollars more in total utility expenditures. This increase will begin to take effect on September 1, 2013, one of the hottest months of the year. “Since the rate hike was announced, more people have turned to solar power,” said Erica Johnson, Director of Community Relations and Development for Sullivan Solar Power. “In the last 60 days, the company has received more than 1,600 inquiries from homeowners interested in solar power installations primarily due to energy rate increases,” Johnson said. By going solar you can offset the most expensive portion of your bill, which is also where rate increases take place. If you are a current homeowner and you want to free yourself

from being subjected to rate increases, solar energy is a perfect option for you. Solar is a smart option for property owners who have an electric bill around or over $100 a month. Solar power can in most cases instantly save you money, help generate clean energy for your community and also keeps your house cooler by providing shade for your home. Many San Diego residents have jumped on the solar bandwagon and signed up to go solar through the Sullivan Cash Reward Program where homeowners receive $0.20 cents per watt, up to $1,500 cash back - on top of the 30 percent Federal Tax Credit. Sullivan Solar Power, San Diego’s top solar power firm per California Solar Initiative data, has created and is administering this program. With this company offer, homeowners are actually getting paid to go solar. For more information or if you would like to schedule a complimentary site evaluation, please call 1.800.SULLIVAN (1-800-785-5482) or visit www.SullivanSolarPower.com.

Healthy Pregnancy with Acupuncture by Jackie C Bensinger, L.Ac.

New patients will often call and want to know if acupuncture is safe to receive while they are pregnant. Absolutely, when acupuncture is administered by a licensed practitioner, it is more than safe.Acupuncture actually assists in creating a healthy, more comfortable pregnancy. From the first trimester symptoms to preparing for labor and delivery, acupuncture relaxes the body, mind and spirit, decreases inflammation, and boosts the immune system. These benefits give your baby a more peaceful and nourished beginning. Pregnant patients frequently want relief from numerous conditions including morning sickness, low back pain, fatigue, heartburn, anxiety, insomnia, edema, stress, constipation, placenta previa and breech position. Generally, acupuncture is very effective at treating these common conditions and even more complex imbalances during pregnancy such as gestational diabetes, preeclampsia and previous miscarriages at any stage. Especially during the trying to conceive period, pregnancy and lactation, it is essential to focus on proper nutrition, appropriate exercise and employing the most natural medical solutions. In cases when a couple has unsuccessfully tried to conceive with unprotected intercourse for more than one year, there is an imbalance in the female or male causing infertility. Infertility can be a complicated issue to diagnose and address for both western and eastern medicine. In most cases infertility including consecutive miscarriages can be treated effectively with either Chinese medicine, western medicine or a combination of both. Whether the couple comes to acupuncture after they have seen a reproductive endocrinologist or prior, specific tests are necessary. For men, a semen analysis is crucial to determine particular qualities of the sperm which can effect fertilization. For the female,

the day three hormone levels test and often more tests and/or procedures are required to conclude the cause of inability to conceive or hold the pregnancy. Chinese herbal medicine, frequently, is prescribed in conjunction with acupuncture for a three month protocol. In addition, acupuncture is administered just prior to and post IVF for the best results. Nearly one third of female patients I have treated for infertility have conceived after treating them to get healthy first. From the beginning, we take an in-depth look at diet, lifestyle, and medical history of both the female and the male.A few of the conditions treated for “Healthy First” are previous miscarriages, anxiety, digestive and bowel issues, inability to relax, stress, allergies and migraine headaches. The women got pregnant when the condition was resolved even without employing a fertility acupuncture or herbal protocol. It is important to note that the emotional component of any physical issue can block a healthy state of being. This is particularly the case in infertility cases with women who have had previous miscarriages and the natural grieving process has not been addressed. Inducing labor with acupuncture is a procedure used when the woman is due or overdue and in conjunction with the appropriate timing of the natural beginning stages of labor contractions.Acupressure on certain points can also effective which is an opportunity for the father to assist in completing this magnificent process. Acupuncture is a highly effective tool for assisting with conception, managing numerous pregnancy symptoms and assisting with labor. mendations will be implemented through the follow-on grant awarded by SANDAG in June 2013. The Study will help guide the creation of a transit-friendly, economically strong community within San Diego. The two previ-

ous workshops gathered information from the community on existing conditions within the study area and initial concepts related to land use and mobility improvements. City staff and the planning team have been refining the land use and mobility concepts to include full land use/traffic analysis, draft urban design guidelines, and economic analysis. Now that we are reaching the home

stretch the community’s participation is more important than ever so please help us in getting the word out to your colleagues, friends and neighbors within the study area. Community input is crucial. Thursday, October 24th from 6 to 8:30 pm at the San Diego Humane Society (Classroom) located at 5500 Gaines St, San Diego, CA 92110.

Uncle Sam is Looking for a Few Good Candidates Community Service is not Without Sacrifice by Daniel J. Smiechowski

Ever thought of serving your community on a Town Counsel or Planning Board? Clairemont is in need of a few good folks to turn our wheel of democracy. But, it may come with a price. That is, public service is like living in a fish bowl and few folks can stomach the personal criticism which can sometimes hurt like arrows. It is said that the first casualty of war is the truth. The same can be said of politics. Community service is a social endeavor and as such is significantly emotional by nature. Many citizens get involved with serving their neighborhoods without the intent to cause waves or as they say rock the boat. These coffee and cookie folks are always welcome but everyone ought to be prepared for occasional conflict. In society there exists the model of conflict and order. Conflict can best be described as progressive, order as constant and traditional. Human behavior works most mysteriously within this framework. So, sometimes in order to exact change and solve community problems one must get the square peg to fit in the round hole. This is where criticism of one’s peers can sting like a bee. But, with political change comes sacrifice by way of standing on principle. Former New York Senator Robert Kennedy once said,“Moral courage is more rare than courage on the battlefield.” Most people cannot stand the heat of societal disapprobation hence so few candidates for public office. Everyone has a

complaint however. It was President Teddy Roosevelt in his famous speech at the Sorbonne that said,“It is not the critic that counts but rather the man in the arena.” Clairemont is in need of men and women of the arena. The Clairemont Town Council is always looking for volunteers to improve community life. We have many interesting issues ahead including a special election for mayor where everyone is welcome to express their opinion. There are countless public safety issues, utility rates going up, solar energy proposals, new businesses in Clairemont and much more to talk about. Finally, I would like to address the likeability factor inherent in the world of community service.Years ago, a Catholic Priest said to my Father before he shipped out during WWII, “Teddy, you don’t have to like anyone but you must love everyone.” These words of wisdom remind me of former Democratic Congressman Daniel Rostenkowski of Illinois who when asked by the media why he was so chummy with President Reagan replied,“Because the President likes me.” Liking someone can go a long way in furthering political ideals but never leave the truth behind. Prejudice, bias and willful misinterpretation of the facts have no place in a civilized society. From 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. to our very own Clairemont Town Council, we invite you to test the waters of community service.

Halloween (Dress Your Dog Up) 5K Run/Walk to Help Dog Rescue Compassion 4Paws Helps Injured and Senior Dogs California Labrador Retrievers & More (Labs and More), the fastest growing dog rescue organization in Southern California, is holding a Charity 5K Fun Run/Walk, Saturday, October 26, 2013, at 7:30 a.m. to help support the organization’s Compassion 4Paws. Sponsored with the help of Road Runner Sports, the event will offer awards for best times, raffle prizes and more. Start/Finish will be held at Road Runner Sports 5549 Copley Drive, SD 92111. Participants are encouraged to run or walk with their dogs and dress them in their favorite Halloween outfit as prizes will be awarded for best

doggie costume. “We are extremely excited about our 5K event because it will help us rescue more dogs, some of which will help wounded military personnel who benefit from canine companionship,” said Dr. Steve Munday, president of Labs and More.“Every year, thousands of dogs in San Diego County are given up by owners who can’t keep them or dumped on the streets

as strays. Events like our 5K Run/Walk will allow participants, donators and helpers to become “Angels of Hope” who provide the help these dogs need.” Labs and More has rescued 1,300 dogs of all breeds and all ages since it began in April 2011 and holds weekly adoption events to find homes for these animals. Most rescued dogs live in nurturing foster homes until they find their permanent families. The group’s Companion 4Paws program provides funds to rescue injured and older dogs left

behind at shelters as well as help families who are no longer able to provide for their beloved canine pets because of job loss or other economic downturn. Dogs suffering from serious injury get the immediate Veterinarian care they need. “Our 5K Run/Walk will be a fun time for everyone,” added Dr. Munday. “And, we encourage local businesses and individuals to help in this most worthy cause by becoming Angels of Hope. Our goal is to raise $30,000”. Those interested in donating to the 5K Run/Walk can call Diane Kath at 858-273-5386 or email at doginfo@labsandmore.org get additional information about Labs & More at www.labsandmore.org.

Upgrades that Devalue Your Home

Converting a Bedroom Turning a bedroom into a man cave, gym, study, studio, or any other use that isn’t a bedroom will devalue your home. If you are set on converting a room, do it in a way that if you go to sell later on you can easily change it back. Or know that the conversion will drop the price of your home. Removing a Bathroom Why would anyone do this, you ask? Well, what if it’s a bathroom in a wing of the house that isn’t used and the plumbing needs be replaced? Or you’re a photographer who wants a dark room. Or you want to expand your kitchen. Similarly to removing a bedroom, decreasing the number of bathrooms in your home will almost always lead to a decrease in value. DIY Renovations If you want.to upgrade or remodel, make sure you know what you are

doing or hire someone who does. Misaligned outlets, crooked window sills and counters, and cheap materials will all be painfully evident to most buyers. Creative Color Schemes If you must paint your walls nary blue or bright pink, plan to repaint later on. Neutral colors are more appealing to home buyers. Water Features Depending on where you live, there are exceptions to this rule. However, pools, hot tubs, koi ponds, fountains and the like require maintenance. If you don’t live in an area where they are the norm, then installing a water feature could deter buyers later on.

DRE #01432238

While generally remodeling or, making upgrades to your home will increase its value, there are certain changes that will devalue your home.

Home owners interested in learning basic techniques, plant choices, and water-wise strategies will find this program to be invaluable,” said botanist Jake Sibley, co-director of the 2013 San Diego Native Gardening Symposium. “This event reflects CNPS’s passion and commitment to our mission of protecting California’s native plant heritage and preserving it for future generations,” said Tom Oberbauer, president of the California Native Plant Society San Diego Chapter, adding, “The wealth of information presented in this workshop format demonstrates that habitat and resource conservation go hand-in-hand with beauty and style.”

The classes will include information about fire safety, pruning native plants, irrigation, and we will have events for children and a hands-on planting demonstration.This demonstration will mean that we leave the Girl Scout site in better condition that we found it, our way of “paying it forward.” The marketplace will feature food trucks, native plant sales, gardening information, and other helpful resources. Fast Facts MINI TACO TUESDAYS: YOUR CHOICE OF MINI TACO - ONLY $1.25 EACH;

By Stella Monde

Los Palmitos This month found me craving Mexican food more so than usual. Mexican food has to be one of my alltime favorite types of cuisine. If it were not for the ill-effects to my waistline, I could eat some form of Mexican food every day. Whether it is the juicy tender cuts of beef called carne asada or the crisp, tasty morsels of pork called carnitas, I am a big fan. What’s not to love about good food cradled in a tortilla in the form of a burrito, a taco or a taquito? I’ll take it any which way it can be served. On a typical sunny San Diego day, my friends and I lunched at Los Palmitos on Clairemont Mesa Drive. After staring at the extensive menu posted overhead and placing our order at the counter, we opted to sit on the front patio as seating inside is limited and a bit cramped. Nothing spectacular about the storefront or interior, but we weren’t interested in home decor or architecture. We were looking to indulge our Mexican food hankering. We sampled guacamole and chips, a carne asada burrito, rolled chicken tacos, a shrimp ceviche tostada and a giant carnitas plate. Of course, I had to wash all this down with some horchata, too. For me, horchata is dessert in liquid form. It’s a sweet drink made from cinnamon, vanilla, milk and rice. Ok, so some of you might be thinking that rice in a drink does not interest you, but the ingredients are all blended and liquefied, so what you get is a drink that looks like soy milk and is filled with sweet-tasting goodness. A nice cold

cerveza also goes very well and Los Palmitos does offer this option, but I had a busy afternoon ahead of me, so decided to abstain. But, I digress...Let me tell you about the other highlights from that lunchtime feast. The carne asada burrito ($5.45) was a healthysized portion dominated by tasty pieces of beef covered in salsa fresca and guacamole. Three Ceviche Tostada simple and tasty ingredients wrapped up in a tortilla equals deliciousness. The ceviche tostada ($3.99) arrived with shrimp tossed in lime juice and red onions piled high on a crispy tostada. The tanginess from the lime juice combined with the tender shrimp and the crunch of the tostada melded many textures in each bite. There is something incredibly easy about eating a taquito/rolled chicken taco (5 rolled chicken tacos with guacamole: $4.90). The chicken is rolled in a corn tortilla, deep-fried, then topped with lettuce, cheese, sour

cream, salsa fresca and guacamole. All I have to do is grab a chicken rolled taco from the plate with all the top-

pings on it and proceed to feeding my face with all this goodness. However, I have to say that my one critique of the ones I had here was that they were a bit dry. No worries, I saved the best dish for last. If I have any regrets in life, it’s that I discovered carnitas only 11 years ago when I moved to San Diego. Slowcooked pork that remains tender, juicy AND has pockets of crispness is an amazing creation. When done well, I absolutely love it. Los Palmitos’ carnitas plate served with rice, beans, guacamole and corn/flour tortillas ($8.60) has to be one of the best deals out there. It’s a huge portion of food AND

Carne Asada Burrito

it is oh-so-good. The carnitas has the right mix of tenderness, saltiness and crispness. Nestle that in a corn tortilla and top it with salsa from the salsa bar and guacamole, and you have a combination made in heaven. Delicious! I have to admit that I was thinking and dreaming about that plate the next day as if it were a new boyfriend, I couldn’t wait to see again. As far as Mexican eateries goes, Los Palmitos fits the bill. Service is quick and efficient. The decor and environs are spartan, but functional. But, let’s not kid ourselves, we were there to eat well and that’s what we did. The food is well-prepared, piled high and tasty. The menu is very extensive with all sorts of combination plates: enchiladas, tacos, burritos, chile rellenos, fajitas, chimichangas and more. The list goes on. There’s bound to be something that strikes your fancy, so I hope you’ll consider stopping by and testing it out yourself. Yum!

Loving Lisbon! by Kevin Casillo

Flying into Lisbon is simply breathtaking. Spanish style buildings with red tiled roofs embraced by steep hillsides and the Tagus River. As you approach you are offered a glimpse of what’s to come. Wide pedestrian streets lined with cafés and restaurants for every budget, museums and our favorite thing to do, head out to the local cafes. This is where you’re going to have a sample of local culture as well as the local dish. So dust off those shoes and head out to “Rossio Square”. Our hotel, the “Internacional Design Hotel” is located right in the center of town. Step out the front door and everything is at your fingertips. It’s a four star hotel and Rossio Square, the Santa Justa Elevator and Miradouros is just a short distance from the hotel. It has all the amenities you need. BREAKFAST a comfortable bed with a view of the square from your balcony, matched with excellent customer service this was one of the many charms of Lisbon. One of the most famous and elaborately decorated public squares we

have seen, Rossio Square, is flanked by two huge bronze fountains at each end. Like most of Europe these squares are meant for gathering and meeting friends. Sitting by these fountains sooths and refreshes. Offering a welcome respite for weary travelers to catch their breath and do a little people watching. But don’t stay too long, Lisbon offers vistas that are unmatched. From the old world charm of Miradouros. which is just a short walk from the main square. Getting there we enjoyed strolling past storefronts beautifully tiled shops with ornately carved doors and wood facades hand carved centuries ago. Strolling old cobblestone streets, the clanking of the vintage cable car as it passes by full of passengers sounds its bells warning pedestrians to “stand clear” just adds to the quaint charm of this city. The most popular Cable Car is #28. Yes we did it and it was like stepping back into a time machine. All wooden car, including floors and that sound you can only get from something that is close to 100 years old. And oh what a ride it is! Once arriving, Miradouros provides a spectacular view of the city out toward the Tagus River and if you know where to look, Saint Georges

castle can be seen set high above the town and on the opposite side of Miradouros. Once you’ve had a

chance to take in the site, you’ll want to wait your turn to ride the “Santa Justa Elevator”. It’s a must see and a must do. One of the city’s best loved Landmarks standing 147 feet high and built in true Gothic form. Once at the top, relax and take in the view and meet locals and tourists alike. Everyone is out enjoying the day, ample sunshine a cool breeze coming in off the river. The Portuguese are extremely pleasant and welcoming so go ahead relax get out of your comfort zone and ask questions, they love to talk. We decided to take a side trip, get out of the city and see a little of the countryside. Traveling by bus we found ourselves at Cabo da Roca located within the Sintra-Cascais Natural park. This is an amazing site, unfortunately the wind, which was told rarely stops was like a typhoon! I somehow

The importance of this location is just that, its location. Here is a test, look this up: 38°47’N9°30’W / 38.783°N 9.500°W is inscribed on a stone plaque, located on a monument at the site. Okay, Okay here is what it means: Cabo da Roca (Cape Roca) is a cape which forms the westernmost extent of mainland Portugal and continental Europe and by definition the Eurasian land mass. What does that actually mean? I have no idea. But that’s the fun of travel, getting there is always a journey, but without the journey there is no experience and without experience there is no learning. So what are you waiting for? Go on, just get out there! If you would like to see more photos, please visit my website at: www.hotshots360.smugmug.com Until next time!

Safety Tips Can Make Back-to-School Incident Free With the new school year beginning on Tuesday, September 3, it is important for students and the public to remember they need to exercise additional caution on or around school campuses. It is important for parents to remember to always set a good example for children, whether walking, riding or driving. Our schools have designated drop off zones; use them! Because many parents drive their students to school, there can be traffic at schools in the morning and afternoon. Follow the rules established by the school.Your child’s safety is worth a few minutes in traffic. Here are a few reminders. Walking to School Teach children the following pedestrian safety rules: • Do not cross the street alone if you're younger than age 10. • Never play in the road. • Always try to walk on paths or sidewalks. If there are no sidewalks or paths, walk facing road traffic. • Look both ways for danger before and while crossing the street. • Dress in bright colors or wear

Clairemont Football Booster Club 2002 - 2013

reflective materials so drivers can easily see you. Driving • Follow school traffic rules for dropping off students. Be aware of crosswalks • Every person riding in a car or truck needs his or her own seat belt. Do not let passengers ride in storage areas or on other people's laps. • Children should always ride in a back seat restrained in a car seat or safety belt. Bicycles • Wear a bicycle or motorcycle helmet on every ride (state law). • Ride so drivers and cyclists can see you. • Look both ways for oncoming vehicles before turning or crossing a street. Go only when it is clear. • Watch out for potholes, cracks, rocks, wet leaves, storm grates, railroad tracks or anything that could make you lose control of your bike. • Make sure your bike fits your height, weight and age. Riding the Bus • Have children arrive at the bus

stop at least five minutes before the scheduled arrival of the bus. Children should stay out of the street while waiting and not horseplay. • Urge children to remain seated on the bus at all times and not shout or distract the driver. Children should know to keep their head and arms inside the bus at all times. • Make sure children know to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before getting on or off. Children should be made aware that the driver has a “blind spot” -- the area from the front of the bus to about 10 feet in front of the bus - and they should not walk in this area after getting off.

Water Pipe Replacement Project Set to Begin Under Clairemont Mesa Blvd

When you sign your son up for Cub Scouting, you’re signing him up for much more than an afterschool activity. Whether it’s camping for the first time or catching his first fish, your son will take part in activities that are fun, but also build character and start him on a path to success. While there are lots of cool badges to earn, the experiences

had along the way are the true rewards. Camping and adventures are happening right now in our community.Welcome to Cub Scouts! Contact Sharon and John Kind for information on how to connect with local scouting: johnkind@san.rr.com or the District Office 619.298.6121 www.BeAScout.org

Where Would You Like to Have a Bike Share Station?

Update from a story in the July Edition Recently, I received a call from a resident who had inquired about the status of this project which was slated to start in July. After speaking with the civil engineer, the dates have changed. The project is now slated to begin sometime in September and continue through December 2014. Water Group Project 958 will replace over 11,000 feet of deteriorating 16”

cast iron water pipe with new PVC pipe. The streets receiving the upgrades are (see map) Clairemont Mesa Drive from Clairemont Drive under SR52 heading into University City on Regents Road. Additionally, Luna Avenue and Hidalgo Ave will also be impacted. For more information on this project and others in the neighborhoods visit: www.sandiego.gov/cip click on “Project Information”

DecoBike San Diego will launch as a city-wide, automated bicycle sharing and rental Program. It will be made available 24/7 to all residents and visitors as an alternative form a public transportation. The Program is being privately-funded by DecoBike LLC., as part of a long-term Partnership with the City of San Diego. The Program will help provide transportation connectivity throughout the city as a “first mile and last mile” commuter solution, in addition to being a “green,” healthy and fun

recreation option. Bike sharing programs have rapidly changed the way millions of people get around each and every day without the hassle of storing and maintaining their own bike. With an estimated 180 station locations and a fleet of 1,800 custom program bikes, DecoBike will be an ideal amenity for all those who live, work and play in San Diego. Visit www.decobikesandiego.com and suggest a location(s) on the map. Suggestions are being taken until October 14, 2013.
