Aging Sewer Mains Replaced in Clairemont Mesa by Vic Salazar, Special to Clairemont Times

Sewer mains that date back nearly 70 years are being replaced within the Clairemont Mesa Community. Work is currently underway on portions of Balboa Avenue and Balboa Terrace and

will soon involve trenching in the Canyon Haven Condominium Complex. Octavio Chiquete of the City of San Diego’s Field Engineering Division is the Resident Engineer for the Balboa Terrace Trunk Sewer Project. He said the work is part of the City of San Diego’s Sewer Main Replacement Program as mandated by the

Environmental Protection Agency. “The City of San Diego has a Consent Decree with the EPA to improve sewer infrastructure,” said Chiquete. He added,“The Balboa Terrace Trunk Sewer Project will replace nearly one mile of sewer

mains that were installed as early as 1953 and are near the end of their expected life span.” The old vitrified clay sewer pipes are being replaced with new polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe and centrifugally cast fiberglass reinforced polymer

pipe, which are expected to be in service for at least 75 years. To install the pipeline, construction crews are using two methods. Open trenching is taking place along Balboa Avenue from Interstate 5 east to Balboa Terrace and will also be used within the Canyon Haven Condominium complex. The remainder of the pipeline, about one-third of a mile, will be installed using a tunneling method. A 10- by 12-foot pit is currently being placed at the intersection of Balboa Avenue and Balboa Terrace. The pit will serve as an access point for the tunneling work, so the pipeline can be placed below ground without the need to dig a trench in the street. This work has necessitated the closure of Balboa Terrace between Balboa Avenue and Monair Drive and traffic is being rerouted through marked detours. The cost of the Balboa Terrace Trunk Sewer Project is $6.7 million dollars. Work started in August and is expected to wrap up by late April, 2013.

Curious About a Siren – Go Online San Diego Fire-Rescue Launches an Online View of Fire Dispatch It happens almost every day, and several times during the day: someone hears a siren or sees fire engines hurrying down the street and calls 9-11 to ask what is going on. It is the wrong thing to do, and it happens at the worst possible time. “Fire dispatchers are on the front line of emergency response,” Fire Communications Director Susan Infantino said. “Answering questions from curious callers not only delays them from doing the important job of emergency dispatch, it clogs the phone lines and could delay a legitimate 9-1-1 call from getting through.” San Diego Fire-Rescue has just launched a website to let the public see the emergencies the Department is responding to. It is http://www.sdfiredispatch.org. People can also find it on the FireRescue website at http://www.sandiego.gov/fire/. San Diego Fire Dispatch Online lists every

call and the units responding to it. The information is updated every five minutes, all day, every day. It is a vivid demonstration of the number and variety of incidents the firefighters and ambulance crews handle daily. “We ask people to refer to this website for answers to questions about incidents,” Infantino said. “It’s vitally important that the 9-1-1 lines be kept open for emergencies. It is literally a matter of life and death.” Development of the site was made possible in part by a grant from the Gaslamp Quarter Association (GQA) to the San Diego Fire Rescue Foundation. “The merchants of the Gaslamp Quarter appreciate the valuable efforts of our public safety heroes,” GQA Executive Director Jimmy Parker explained.“It is our hope that this tool will serve as an important source of information for those impacted by emergencies, both large and personal.”

Capital Improvement Projects

Future Improvements for Clairemont Neighborhoods Commentary/Notes from the October Clairemont Community Planning Group Meeting The October meeting of the Clairemont Community Planning Group was as always full of ideas and potential improvements for the neighborhood. Ever wondered about neighborhood improvement projects either current, future or proposed chances are you can obtain information at these meetings. Besides cell phone tower presentations, random variance and setback property questions the October meeting shed light on the positive direction for Clairemont. Hopefully in the future the community will see: Sidewalks on Clairemont Drive from Burgener down to Morena Blvd on what will hopefully be both sides of the street, as well as extending continuous sidewalks on Genesee Blvd from the Sprouts Shopping Plaza north to Sauk Avenue. The need for an all-encompassing Sidewalks/Bike Paths Plan ideally all around the community. It is the hope a combined Sidewalk/Bike Path plan will be presented to the

committee, and the public, at a future planning group meeting. One bike path that will be happening in the future (no date as of yet) is a 13 mile bike path on Balboa Ave from Morena Blvd to Santo Road. A potential pedestrian/bike bridge at Clairemont Drive to access Mission Bay, especially considering this will be a future trolley stop. Since attending these meetings I have witnessed proposed changes by concerned residents as they present their ideas or concerns for the betterment of the community, and, in some cases ultimately approved. While the process can take months and require attending multiple meetings, things do get done. The recommendations by the members of this and the many planning groups throughout the neighborhoods to city staff, ultimately, have one goal in mind, preserving and protecting our communities. For the times and dates of the Clairemont & Linda Vista Planning groups see page 8.

SANDAG Awards Grant to Help Linda Vista Pedestrians and Bicyclists The San Diego Association of Government (SANDAG) has awarded the City of San Diego’s Development Services Department a $300,000 grant for the Linda Vista Comprehensive Active Transportation Strategies (CATS). The CATS grant for the Linda Vista Community Planning Area will help provide direct and convenient connections to various destinations, while increasing bicyclist and pedestrian safety. PLTW at Montgomery Middle School Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is the leading provider of rigorous and innovative Science,Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education curricular programs used in middle and high schools across the United States. Montgomery Middle School has been implementing the PLTW program since 2006 and is pleased to announce its expansion to five full sections challenging students from grades 6-8. STEM education is at the heart of today’s high-tech, high-skill global economy. For America to remain economically competitive, our next generation of leaders -- the students of today -- must develop the critical-reasoning and problem-solving skills that will help make them the most productive in the world. This is the heart of the PLTW initiative at Montgomery. We plan to provide our students with the most comprehensive, state of the art learning experience available. The PLTW Gateway To Technology (GTT) program features a project-

based curriculum designed to challenge and engage the natural curiosity and imagination of middle school students. They envision, design and test their ideas with the same advanced modeling software used by companies like Lockheed Martin, Intel and Sprint. They study mechanical and computer control systems; think robotics and animation. Students also explore the importance of energy, including innovative ways to reduce, conserve and produce it using solar, thermal and wind power. The knowledge that students gain and the skills they build from GTT create a strong foundation for further STEM learning in high school and beyond. We are proud to provide our students with such a rich experience. The knowledge they gain here will be implemented beyond the walls of the classroom and will serve as a vital part of their growth as young adults. CLMT Roots - An Apparel Company Developed by 2011 Clairemont High School Graduates Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Chris Bonner one of the founders of the CLMT Roots apparel company for a brief Q&A about how it all began. Chris along with fellow classmates Noah Welsh, Cory Mosburg, Mark Bial, Broc Gentry & Ryan Allen are the successful young men who took an idea to production. CT: So how did this idea come about? CB: Summer of 2010 we were thinking ahead to what our senior school project would be and we decided Clairemont themed apparel would be a fun idea. CT: Basically an idea for a school project became a real business? CB: It turned out we did not even use it as a school project, but we all stuck with the idea and decided to start brainstorming. From there it kind of snow balled and really took off. By fall of 2010 we had ideas for t shirts & sweatshirts and went into production shortly thereafter while we were seniors at Clairemont High. CT: How did you come up with the name CLMT Roots? CB: The name was pretty easy. We all are born and raised here with established roots, and proud of being

from Clairemont. We thought of the root system and incorporated it into our logo. Basically we started by talking about ideas and then some simple drawings. CT: How does the actual design process take place? CB: We all kind of again brainstorm. We would all draw some really basic things, talk about them and then we found a graphic designer Tony Majum. He does amazing work. We are so lucky to have him because he sees our vision, we discuss with him our ideas and then he just makes it happen. From there we brought our designs to Randy’s Custom Screen Printing in Kearny Mesa for production. And again we got lucky he took us on with a little budget and even less experience and had faith in us. Between Tony & Randy’s shop we are very lucky; they are a major part of our brand. CT: How do you sell and market? CB: We started a Facebook page www.facebook.com/CLMT Roots. From there the word spread throughout the school and pretty soon we were filling orders then more and more. We started out with a couple designs and are up to about 20 now.

We also sell them at Clairemont Surf Shop. But for the most part it’s word of mouth and then direct messages from our facebook page. CT: So tee shirts sweat shirts anything else? CB: The brand has really taken off from when we first started. We now sell men’s and women’s, sweatshirts, tee shirts, tank tops, trucker hats, stickers, we even sell little baby onesies. They are actually big sellers the onesies it’s pretty neat. CT: So how are all 6 of you getting along running a business? CB: It’s great; we are all busy, we are all in college so we all do the best we can with the company. CT: Are you studying business in college? CB: Yes right now I am a sophomore studying Business Management at Grossmont College plus I am the starting QB for the football team so I am quite busy, but it is all good. I will be graduating and then transferring to hopefully continue my football career and of course keep growing the company.

CT: Any plans to expand the business? CB: Actually yes we have all been talking and are kicking ideas around. Right now the focus is college, after we all graduate in a couple years we do have some plans to definitely expand.

Chris reiterated again how cool it is to be driving around and seeing a total stranger wearing something from their collection. “It is a great feeling” he said “our idea becoming reality and then a real business.” With the holiday season fast approaching, now is the perfect time to order that holiday gift. Either stop in at the Clairemont Surf Shop or order from their facebook page at facebook.com/CLMT Roots or call Chris Bonner directly at (858) 7316076 for more information.

Walking for Kendra Kendra’s Krew (Micki Payne, Paula Flanagan,Vy Crowe, and Lisa DeFabrizio) needs your help in fighting breast cancer. All four of us have walked the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk before and realize the strength it takes to fight this disease and the need for more research to find a cure for all the various types of breast cancer. We will walk November 16, 17 and 18th from Del Mar to Downtown San Diego meandering around our beautiful city for a total of 60 miles.

mom and friend that would light up a room with her smile, had a wicked sense of humor, and was a fantastic mother/wife and truly loved life. In December of 2011, Kendra was diagnosed with Stage 4 Inflammatory Breast Cancer. This was a devastating diagnosis for a 45 year old mother of two children, ages 10 and 12. Kendra and her husband, Paul, sought advice from experts. She tried traditional and non-traditional therapies and participated in clinical trials. She fought with everything she had and did it with grace. On September 7, 2012, Kendra lost her battle.

We decided to dedicate this year’s walk to Kendra Neves. She was a local
