38th Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program The City of San Diego’s Environmental Services Department will host the 38th Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program beginning December 26, 2011 and running through January 23, 2012. This year’s program available to City residents only, as well as curbside pickup for those customers with curbside yard waste collection. “Recycling Christmas trees is an important way for San Diegans to help the environment and extend the life of the Miramar Landfill,” said Chris Gonaver, director of the Environmental Services Department. “Historically, yard clippings and other organic materials, such as Christmas trees, comprise more than 20 percent of the material buried in the landfill. By recycling trees, residents help reduce the amount of material in the landfill and give holiday trees a second life as compost, mulch or wood chips.” Only “clean trees” are accepted at city recycling locations. Before depositing trees, residents must remove all tree stands, lights, ornaments, tinsel, and nonrecyclable materials. Trees from commercial tree lots or fundraising projects will not be accepted at the drop-off locations. Instead, these trees can be dropped off free of charge until January 23, 2012 at the Miramar Greenery. Residents participating in the Christmas Tree Recycling Program should drop off clean trees during daylight hours. Please do not illegally dump any other items at the drop-off locations. In addition to clean trees, flocked trees (fake snow) are also accepted. All trees will be recycled into high quality mulch and compost. City residents can self-load mulch and up to two cubic yards of compost for free at the Miramar Greenery throughout the year. Curbside yard waste recycling customers can also recycle trees through the curbside collection program by placing trees at the curb with the regular yard waste recycling. Customers with automated greenery containers must cut up their clean trees to ensure they will fit easily inside their greenery container. Curbside recycling program customers should remove all non-recyclable materials before placing trees inside the automated bin or at the curb next to yard waste collection containers. The following is a list of local drop-off locations for the 38th Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program: La Jolla: Kate Sessions Memorial Park, Soledad & Loring Street Miramar: Miramar Landfill at Greenery, Convoy St. North of Rt 52 Mission Bay: SeaWorld Drive @ Pacific Highway Ocean Beach: Robb Athletic Field Recreation Center, 2525 Bacon Street University City: Swanson Pool, 3585 Governor Drive Additional information about the residential drop-off site locations is available by calling Environmental Services Department Customer Service at 858-6947000. For information on mulch and compost produced at the Miramar Greenery, call the Miramar Landfill at 858-492-6100.

Opinions Time for Resolution! Hello Clairemontians and Neighbors! As always thanks for picking up this month’s edition of the Clairemont Times. We are excited to continue to provide you with fun, informative news and stories. This month I’d like to focus on the infamous “New Year’s Resolution”. However I am not going to go into detail and list ideas for you to adopt as your own personal resolution, that task rests solely on your own shoulders. Instead I’d like to discuss ways to make your resolutions successful. A lot of people usually jump into 1 of 2 popular resolutions pretty hastily. Option #1 is to lose weight, especially after you have overindulged in holiday goodies (which I can assure you I am guilty of more than most). Option #2 is to save money or at least stop spending so much of it on things such as the good ‘ol daily Starbucks fix (nothing against Starbucks, we all love their beverages and goodies). Both of these resolution options are great but unfortunately they often fail prior to February 1st. There are many reasons as to why they fail and hopefully I can shed a little light on ways to “resolution success”. When I am not writing articles for The Clairemont Times I spend close to 40 hours a week helping and assisting others with getting their personal issues squared away. So I do have some decent relevant experience in helping others write and implement their own personal goals. Please be advised that I can only paint the path, I cannot walk it for you. So let’s get down to it, regardless of what your resolution is here are ways to achieve your goals: 1. Make your resolution with someone else, and promise that person and yourself that you’re in it together. Teaming up is a great way to motivate you and your partner.

2. Start small. You’re resolution does not have to be gargantuan or even for the whole year. Often we see college coeds promise themselves a couple weeks before spring break that they are going to lose 15 - 20 pounds to get into that cute swimsuit. This leads to instant FAILURE on their part. If you want to lose weight then start with losing 2-3 pounds. Once you achieve that goal move on to losing a couple more pounds. It’s all about taking Baby Steps (for more information on “Baby Steps” please refer to the movie What About Bob? starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss). 3. Set attainable goals that have visible results. Let’s stick with the weight loss example, if you lose a couple pounds not only will you see it on the scale you will most likely see it in your waistline and start to feel physically better. This rule put in tandem with rule #2 will allow you to actually see your progress, even if it is small progress. 4. Track all of your progress so that you can always go back and see where you were at the beginning of the previous week. 5. Don’t cut at all the “good” things in your life. If you are trying to cut back on the amount of money you spend at Starbucks it doesn’t mean you can never go back there and treat yourself. Quitting things cold turkey often leads to a breakdown and giving in to your old habits. Pick a day every 2 weeks where you are allowed to “break” your own resolution. Wean yourself off of your habit gently and appropriately. 6. Above all else, find out what motivates you to succeed with your resolution and stick to it. No one said any of this would be easy, so set yourself up with a lot of positive ammo to get you to your goal. Take your time, think about these rules, and get

to it! Don’t let your New Year’s Resolution be something that haunts you all of January, make it fun, make it happen, and surprise yourself! Thanks for reading! As always, keep sending me your feedback and let me know if you’d like a topic to appear in next month’s issue. Johnny Cantanz Johnny.Cantanz@yahoo.com

District 6 News/Events From the Office of Excellence in Councilmember Lorie Zapf Clairemont Schools

On December 14th I was fortunate and grateful to have a sit down conversation with our District Councilmember, Lorie Zapf to reflect back on her first year in office. The following is a portion of the conversation/Q&A. Clairemont Times (CT): Looking back would you call it a successful year for you personally as well as the City Council. Councilmember Lorie Zapf (CMLZ): Without a doubt there was lot of great progress made. It was a great first year. CT: Any examples of how quickly positive change happened? CMLZ: A group came before the council trying to start a community garden however the roadblocks were high costs and permitting issues. We addressed it in Jan/Feb and by July I was at a ribbon cutting for a community garden in Linda Vista. The costs were negligible and now we have a tremendous asset to the community. CT: Your thoughts on redistricting? CMLZ: It was tough. I think it is a shame Clairemont was divided. I met a lot of great people when I was out campaigning in this district and now D6 is being chopped up. However, I want to reiterate that I as well as my staff are here for the community through the end of the year (2012). We all will do our best and still be accessible, even more so with the transition to the new districts. CT: Can you discuss the small business initiative? CMLZ: There are a great many small businesses in Clairemont alone and small businesses are the catalyst to keeping our economy moving. Time and time again we hear about what is hurting or hindering businesses from the City perspective. Whether it is permitting or talking to the right people downtown we wanted to know how we can help. We held some small business summits and from there we opened the doors to the [Council] chamber and many small business owners came down and actually spoke to the City Council with concrete examples of what the issues they were encountering. Moving forward we hope to streamline the process and make it easier for all small business to thrive. CT: Are you on record as officially running for the District 2 seat? CMLZ: Officially, no. However there is a long time between now and then so you never know, a lot can happen; right now I am focused on the job at hand.

Schools in the Clairemont Cluster and the Madison Community of Schools have a lot to be thankful for as we begin 2012. At Madison High we recently dedicated a state-of-the-art broadcast journalism facility. Madison also hosted an ROTC competition for all of the ROTC schools across San Diego Unified. Both Clairemont High and Madison completed their first seasons in beautiful new stadiums paid for by Clairemont taxpayers. All of our schools are benefiting from San Diego Unified’s nationally acclaimed i-21 technology program that will place a laptop in the hands of every student in the district. All of the schools have come together to form a Clairemont Mesa Educational Foundation. This non-profit community foundation will raise funds for special programs at our own schools as we experience a renaissance of quality neighborhood schools across Clairemont. I am proud to represent these schools as your representative to the school board. In 2012 I will serve as President of the Board. We are all aware of the economic crisis affecting our community, our state and our nation. Since I came on the board three years ago we have cut hundreds of millions from the budget and have reduced our teaching and support staff. We are now doing the same job with about 2,000 fewer employees. Nevertheless, the teachers and staff continue to work hard. National test results released before winter break showed that we are doing an outstanding job in improving student achievement in comparison with other districts across the country. As President of the San Diego Unified Board, I will do everything within my power to continue the fine work of our schools. We can only divide up the money that the state decides to give us. We will take whatever measures necessary to make sure we balance our budget to protect our local control of the schools. We will not do anything that would allow the state or county to intervene. This will require shared sacrifice on the part of our employees, students, parents and community. I have noticed a sincere desire on the part of our unions to cooperate in this crisis. We have already made many tough choices. Now the Governor and the legislature need to make the tough choices to ensure that our schools have the funds we need to operate. San Diego schools are worth investing in and we have the results to prove it. John Lee Evans President, San Diego Unified Board of Education

Exploring the Canyon First article in an ongoing series exploring different trails right here in our own neighborhoods. Who knows how many times we have all travelled east and west on Balboa Avenue between Clairemont Drive and Mt. Everest Blvd. How many times we have seen the odd configuration of hundreds of stationary figures on the hillside south of Balboa as we travel east. Last month I set out to find what was going on in the canyon. After a little research and then a trek down into the canyon a lot of my questions were answered right there on a sign titled “Central Tecolote Canyon Mitigation Project”. What I also found was peace and tranquility. This particular journey started from the western most point of Mt Ashmun Drive where it dead ends. Of course with the New Year and the obvious resolution to get in better shape what better way than to take a hike on this newly discovered wide trail. I soon discovered what the odd configuration was visible from Balboa Ave; the new native plantings along with what appeared to be a cylinder shape mesh protective barrier for each new plant. There you have it question answered, for me at least. In a nutshell the project was/ is to eliminate non native plants and re plant or restore what is native to the area. Much to my surprise come to find out this is a pretty hotly contested issue. My goal is not to pick a side

because I can see pros/cons from both but instead my goal is to get me and you outside and discover what some of us take for granted on a regular basis. There were plenty of footprints, mountain bike tracks, dog prints etc so a lot of you are familiar with this hidden jewel. The project in and of itself it pretty interesting, however what I found while on the trail was pure peace and quiet. For a while the only sounds I heard were some birds chirping and a biplane passing overhead. Looking up I saw birds whizzing by and 4 hawks gliding effortlessly above. I have done my fair share of walking the beach, pedaling the boardwalk, being around crowds of tourists and “the beach thing”. However, my new hobby is; peace and quiet and discovering the miles of trails ahead in our own

backyard. On a difficulty scale of 1 to 5 this short walk is from the starting point on Mt Ashmun heading north towards Balboa is a 1.5, very, very easy. The trail is wide, the terrain is essentially flat, total time could be 20 minutes roundtrip. However, if you want to take it all in and look around it could take as long as you want. I say take your time. My theory why rush it, the rat race will still be there once you leave the dirt and hit the pavement. Stay tuned next month for a new canyon trail or read more about this hike on my blog at clairemonttimes.com. Local Food Trucks Raising Money for Senior Citizens December 13th was a dreary rainy day here in the neighborhood; however our spirits were lifted when we came upon a fleet of food trucks parked in Kearny Mesa. Turns out it was a project which was raising money for Meals-OnWheels San Diego. Events like these, with so many trucks, are tough to coordinate, however Kearny Mesa Subaru was kind enough to provide parking space for over 20 local food trucks at their dealership. The food trucks donated 20% of their sales to Meals-On-Wheels, San Diego. It was estimated, even during the inclement weather, 450-500 people bought their lunch, sampled some delicious food and raised money for a great cause.

Surface Navy Holiday Lights Event December 6th Naval Base San Diego for the first time ever opened their gates and lowered the gangways for the public to tour a few Navy ships as part of a Holiday Lights Event. It was cold on the waterfront however it did not dampen the spirits of the sailors or the many visitors. We were fortunate to board the USS Boxer, an Amphibious Assault Ship, and the USS Milius, a Guided Missile Destroyer. The sailors gave brief tours of the ships and provided hot cocoa and warm cookies for all. I only hope this will be a new long standing tradition, it was truly awe inspiring and appreciated.
