It is amazing how time moves so fast and here we are already into the holiday season. This is a time of celebration with friends and family and being with the ones you love. It is also a bittersweet time of year; remember to always keep smiling memories alive. This is a time to give thanks for what you have and maybe even a time to give back. If you are looking for give back ideas how
about cleaning out your closet to donate warm clothes to those in need or maybe making a donation of non-perishable food to the local food pantry. While you are out holiday shopping this year imagine what a little inexpensive toy or two would mean to a young child. I want to wish all the readers, old and new, a Merry Christmas and a Happy, Safe Holiday Season!

Alvarez Wins Big by Daniel J. Smiechowski
Mayoral Candidate David Alvarez has swept into a runoff election by over five thousand votes. The current Councilmember and his grass roots campaign contacted nearly every Clairemont voter in Mr.Alvarez’s quest to become San Diego’s next Mayor. A shining star glowed over an old art gallery in Barrio Logan where nearly nine hundred supporters’ cried tears of joy when Mr.Alvarez predicted victory at about 10:00pm.The candidate’s three year old daughter seemed bewildered at the festivities but was cute as a button. Mr.Alvarez a man of intellect and high character promised to bring inclusion to City Hall while working in concert with opposing forces. The mayoral candidate stressed the need for community involvement and will direct city services into a new era of collaboration and goodwill. Public Safety response times will continue to be monitored in an effort to save lives and property. Municipal services including streets, walkways, beaches, trash, signage and parking enforcement will all see improvement under an Alvarez Administration. This includes Clairemont. David Alvarez is clearly a simple man of great character, devotion, frugality and vision.William James once
said,“Without vision the people shall perish.”The candidate certainly has the needed foresight and experience to lead our City. Our Clairemont neighborhoods remain front and center in the eyes of our future Mayor. Additionally, small business the heart and soul of America’s economic engine will play a large role in improving our quality of life. This includes all areas of San Diego without prejudice. Also noteworthy is the plan by Mr. Alvarez to improve upon our beautiful parks and needed libraries. San Diego ought to commit more public park land to every corner of the region and the candidate understands the importance of this proposal. Furthermore, every single San Diegan is deemed worthy of sharing ideas with our future Mayor. David Alvarez in the truest sense is a man of the people with the heart of a lion.As Robert Kennedy once said,“Moral courage is more rare than courage on the battlefield.” Indeed, the heart and courage of a lion, that is David Alvarez. Please exercise your privilege as an American and vote in the upcoming election for mayor. Daniel J. Smiechowski has been a resident of Clairemont since 1967 and can be reached at smiechowskid@aol.com (858) 220-4613
5th Annual Clairemont Uncorked Wine Tasting Event by Angie Davis
For years, I’ve noticed the cute banners around the neighborhood advertising the Clairemont Uncorked wine tasting event but had been unable to attend. This year, I finally made it to the 5th annual wine event held on November 8th at the Butcher Shop Steakhouse. Hosted by the Clairemont Chamber of Commerce, the wine tasting event had a huge turnout with over 200 tickets sold.A number of Southern California wineries and wine related businesses participated and offered tastings and wine related items for purchase, such as Fallbrook Winery, Truly Fine Wines, California Fruit Winery,Woof’n Rose Winery,Wine That’s Fun,Wine Passionate and J. Pilar. For $20, patrons enjoyed five wine tastings, tray-passed hors d’oeuvres and dessert samples. This year, Helms Brewery was also represented, providing free beer tastings and friendly conversation. The popular affair took place in the banquet room at the Butcher Shop,
however the remainder of the restaurant was open for business, offering a nice dinner option for wine tasters afterward. Judging by the long lines, plenty of people took advantage of the $1 valet parking. In high demand was the Wine Factor table featuring several pinot noirs and cheerful owner, Beverly Hurley, who offered up tasty pinots in their self-proclaimed “pursuit for the perfect pinot”. Wine Smarties, another participant offering wine samples, provides services such as wine consultation, organizing wine events, weddings and classes. Curds and Wine was on hand with cheese samples and cheese making tips. Unique pours were served by the Chocolate Shop.As one wine and chocolate loving patron put it,“dessert heaven in a glass.” This year’s gathering featured live music and generous samples of great wines and beers, along with a commemorative wine glass. Next year’s Clairemont Uncorked is sure to be a big success, but remember to arrive early and beat the crowd!

Radio Jack and His J. Warren Marketing Group Makes a Splash in the Neighborhoods by Doris Rivas-Brekke
To make it in the business world today, you have to approach your business like a heavy weight fight! As the famous World Heavy Weight Champion fighter Muhammad Ali said over 30 years ago, you have got to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee…what does this mean in the business world? Your business needs to “float” above your competitors and “sting” with your marketing tactics.The world of business is serious; it is not for the faint of heart… The J.Warren Marketing Group believes using radio as an advertising and marketing tool can give a business plan the one-two punch to elevate a business profile. The leader of the group, better known as “Radio” Jack, has a favorite saying, he says with gusto “Let’s get ready to do Radio”. The smart business owner will use a combination of marketing tools. One of those combinations is the use of radio and newspaper advertisement.The average business person often believes that radio is too expensive, but the J.Warren Group buys air time in bulk and is able to pass on the savings to the business owner;
therefore making it possible to enter the radio market. Recently, the J. Warren Marketing Group and the Clairemont Times newspaper formed an advertising relationship. Both these companies are offering a great introductory advertising package to local small businesses. Another favorite saying “Radio” Jack shares with clients, “It’s not just what you say (on the radio); it’s what you do with what you say” example: place your radio ad on your Facebook page and more…that sets your business apart from your competitors. The J.Warren Group with its years of experience and the use of two radio platforms, with shows on traditional radio/KCBQ 1170AM and internet radio on WsRadio.com and now its partnership with the Clairemont Times, can offer a splashy advertising package for a very reasonable price.“Radio” Jack and his group would love to talk and share their ideas. Mayor’s Update
www.clairemonttimes.com
SENIORS WANTED The Senior Companion Program is looking for volunteers:
by Todd Gloria, Interim Mayor; City of San Diego
Dear Friends, This time last year, I had just been elected Council President for 2013 by my Council colleagues. It was a tremendous honor, and I was looking forward to advancing policies that would strengthen our neighborhoods and our economy. We began the year with a new mayor who accomplished little, disrupted much, and ultimately became a liability for our City. What occurred in those first nine months, well it’s nothing I could ever have imagined. When I became Interim Mayor on August 30, it was my intention to accomplish as much as I possibly could in a short period of time. This time of year we all make our holiday lists. Here is a list of my Favorite Things we’ve done since I became Interim Mayor. 1. Our new Downtown library, the San Diego Library at Joan & Irwin Jacobs Common, opened after 30 years of planning and dreaming and reflects San Diego’s value of knowledge, technology, literacy, and education. 2. The Convention Center expansion was approved which will create 7,000 permanent jobs and have an estimated economic impact of $700 million a year. 3. The Workforce Housing Offset was updated increasing the funding stream for affordable housing options. 4. I brought forth a project list for a $120 million infrastructure bond that includes $43,460,000 for street resurfacing and additional improvements made to libraries, fire stations, and storm drains. This infrastructure bond will be considered by my Council colleagues next month. 5. Border relations were strengthened by regularly scheduled meetings with elected officials from the Baja
region as well as City department leaders meeting with their Tijuana counterparts to make our shared region greater. 6. The Prevailing Wage Ordinance was approved which is expected to result in safer and better monitored work sites, on-time completion, properly trained apprentices, and fewer construction defects, change orders, and cost overruns. 7. A reorganization of City government was approved which will make our City’s operations run more smoothly and efficiently, save time and money, and invest in the development of our employees. 8. We unveiled a ground-breaking Climate Action Plan that positions San Diego as a national leader in clean energy and a clean tech economy. 9. The City Council approved dispersing $6 million of collected assessments to the San Diego Tourism Marketing District to re-launch marketing efforts to draw visitors to San Diego and create jobs. 10. Our City’s lobbyists were rehired ending a nine-month period where we had no one in Sacramento or Washington, D.C. vying for resources or funding for our City. I know these accomplishments happened because of the cooperative spirit of my Council colleagues, our City leadership team, the City Attorney, City employees, and all San Diegans. Together we helped our City get back on its feet and moving in the right direction again. There is more work to be done between now and March when a new mayor takes office, and I promise you I won’t be slowing down anytime soon. Finally, I hope you’ll be able to join me at the State of the City Address on January 15 at 6:00 p.m. at the Balboa Theatre to celebrate our progress and envision our future. The year started out naughty and ended up nice. I wish you all a joyful and safe holiday season. As always, thank you for the opportunity to serve. Respectfully,Todd Gloria Interim Mayor; City of San Diego

December is Paris by Kevin Casillo
Bonjour fellow readers and travel enthusiasts! December is full of colorful excitement, anticipation and flawless presentation. For me, this best describes Paris! After all who doesn’t love Paris? I know what you’re thinking and what you’ve heard, it’s dirty, the French are rude and it’s expensive.Well most of that is true. But they are working on all of it and I can honestly say that during our visits to Paris we’ve never experienced one problem. That is unless you count the time I thought I’d try to trick the waiter into believing I was fluent in French. We found a wonderful café on the Champs-Élysées and the waiter brought us our menu, all in French and when he came to take our order I gave him my order in what I thought was the most perfect annunciation and just the right amount of, well Frenchness. When I finished, he politely looked at me and said, Misère are you certain? I replied Oui, Oui Senior, he smiled and soon returned with a plate full of Hamburger with a perfectly poached egg on top. So you see it was I that caused the problem, not France. It’s all in how you travel, for us it’s always light, and how you react to your own mistakes. The idea of becoming a writer, sipping espresso in a dimly lit café on the streets of Paris or a small elegant French vintner has crossed my busy little mind many times. But after visiting wineries and realizing it’s not as romantic as it may sound in a book or presented on the big screen that thought I have happily left behind. So I will stay close to civilization. Shopping on the Avenue des ChampsÉlysées which is one of the most expensive real estate in the world is more my style. Although the prices seem just a bit out of reach. These are some of the finest shops and sidewalk
Moulin Rouge
café’s we’ve been to and love every one of them. There is nothing like walking the cobble stone streets and finding your way into one of the local pâtisserie in a centuries old building with huge windows brimming with the sweetest darkest chocolates covered with glazed blueberries and fresh fruits. The aroma of fresh baked breads wafts into the street with such intensity from the Boulangerie that it only takes a taste to set you on a wild calorie filled romance while drinking in the view along the banks of the River Seine. Finding a spot on the grass just steps away from Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris proves its reputation for lovers. Church bells ring in a new hour, couples holding hands gaze into each other’s souls, and others sit reminiscing of days long gone on benches set in parks nestled among mature stately trees and colorful gardens. Artists have been painting here for centuries and today is no different, students gather to watch, water colors, oils and charcoal all are used to recreate the vision seen by each artists while street musicians perform and others simply relax playing chess while enjoying the cool breeze from the Seine. As I have said before, the only way to see a city is to walk it. Paris is a very walk friendly city. (Just be careful of the dog poop) There is a Right Bank and there is a Left Bank either has plenty to offer and each is easily accessible by foot or metro. We prefer the left bank, or as the locals call it,“La Rive Gauche”, is on the southern side of the Seine and encompasses six arrondissements, or neighborhoods. The Left Bank is the smaller section of Paris, and historically known as the artistic part of the city. Many of the famous writers and artists who once called Paris home – like Picasso, Matisse, and Hemingway – once lived, because it used to be that this was the part of the city that was much less expensive. (After all what starving
artist had money for rent and living expenses.) There are many sites you should see in Paris, the Eiffel Tower, Moulin Rouge, the Arch de Triumph and so much more. Our favorite is riding the Metro and visiting the Sacre Coeur Basilica. This Basilica sits in the heart of the Montmartre high above the city offering amazing views to the city below. What I like most about this building is that it is pure white and its design is byzantine. When the bells toll you know this Basilica has what it takes, one of the bells the Savoyarde bell, weighs in at a staggering 19 tons. Beneath the church Basilica Paris you can visit the crypt which I highly recommend you do. We were fortunate to hear a women’s choir singing French hymns. Although we never saw them their magical voices carried down to the crypt as if sent from well, above. Once outside make your way down the endless stairs to the shops of Montmartre grab a freshly made crepe oozing with chocolate warmed from the street vendor. Find a comfortable spot to sit and just mingle with locals.Watch the sun set on this amazing city of lights and if you have time take the train system, it’s wonderful, fast affordable and always on time. There are many things I will always remember about France, the sites of Paris, riding the Bullet Train to NICE, visiting Monaco (a must) and Cannes but there is a scene we innocently stumbled across while my partner and I were strolling in on one of our favorite places to visit in Paris, the cemetery. Oh I can hear your gasps from here. But the reality is they are full of the who’s who. Louis Braille is here, Frederic Chopin,Victor Hugo Edith Piaf, Gustave Eiffel and even Rin Tin Tin himself. Yes he was a German Shepard and is a Hollywood Legend but he was born in France and when he died after a long Hollywood career he was flown back to his place of birth where he forever rests alongside some of the world’s greatest. This one particular damp misty afternoon we were walking through the graveyard looking for the final resting place of
Jim Morrison (he’s there too). We came upon a small group of mourners mostly women of perhaps six or seven, dressed in black standing before the grave waiting for its unlucky guest of honor. When we noticed off in the distance, behind the mourners and between several large oak trees darkened by the mist stood four unshaven men dressed in dark overalls, well-worn Burettes and each leaning on shovels quietly smoking and staring into the quiet air. I thought, is this some form of poetic justice? All I could think of was, they are here to fill the void they created for the poor creature about to be placed in the hands of angels, and here they are smoking, why are they smoking? But, this is France and they do love to smoke! Just remember, don’t make the same mistake I did, after riding the Metro for the first time and not speaking a word of French I mentioned to my partner,“We really should visit this place called SORTE there are signs advertising it all over the place!” He just looked at me and smiled. (I’ll let you figure that out) And that my friends is mine, have a wonderful holiday season and to all I say, Merry Christmas! The Scout’s Eye by Rob Stone
Six-foot-one, 195-pound junior quarterback Josh Gaudet exhibited accuracy in completing 73 percent of his passes, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Horizon Christian Academy Panthers suffered a tough 51-13 loss at the hands of The Bishop’s School Knights in a Coastal League contest played at Gene Edwards Stadium on the campus of La Jolla High School (LJHS) on Friday evening, November 8. Horizon’s Gaudet threaded the needle on touchdown passes to five-footten-inch, 165-pound Anthony Oseguera (four receptions for 56 yards) and fivefoot-eight-inch, 165-pound Jamal Lewis (five receptions for 22 yards), while completing 22 out of 30 of his passing attempts for 173 yards. Wide receivers Ethan Underwood (five receptions for 53 yards) and Christian Arlington (three receptions for 33 yards) also gained good yardage after catches for the Panthers. With the defeat, Horizon concludes their season with an overall record of 4-6. In other local action, the Kearny High Komets also concluded their cam-
paign with a 32-3 loss to the LJHS Vikings in a Western League game played at George Hoagland Memorial Stadium on the campus of Madison High School on Friday night, November 8. Stephen Pulley, a six-foot, 175-pound senior quarterback, showed arm strength in passing for over 1,000 yards this season for the Komets. Meanwhile, Kearny’s ground attack featured athleticism in the form of fivefoot-nine-inch, 210-pound senior running back Steven Fanning, who averaged around 100 yards per game on the year.
