Got Turf? Whitman has the perfect field for you. If any school deserves support, it’s WHITMAN ELEMENTARY! Recently, an article was written to implore the community of Clairemont to assist with the beautification of the Whitman Elementary campus. We very graciously thank the community for their support as we continue our efforts to improve the dirt field for Whitman students. Despite tough economic struggles Whitman staff, families, and our community neighbors maintain a unified vision that Whitman’s dirt field will one day be a beautiful environment for our students, their families, and the community. We need your support to fulfill this important vision. WHITMAN COMMUNITY AND PROGRAMS Whitman proudly offers unique opportunities for our culturally, economically, and socially diverse population of students, Pre-K through 6th grade. Our exemplary Deaf and Hard of Hearing Oral program is the only oral program in the district for Pre-K through 6th grade. We also have an extraordinary staff to educate students in our special education programs. Our students receive weekly music and physical education classes. Fifth and sixth graders attend weekly instrumental music classes, and fourth and fifth graders participate in Power Play, a health and nutrition program. In addition, Mission Federal visits weekly for students who would like to begin or deposit into an existing savings account to learn about the value of finances.

PARTNERSHIPS FOR SCIENCE, MUSIC, AND ART Our focus of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) is supported by partnerships with UCSD, the Ruben H. Fleet Science Center, SDG&E, PEAK (Promoting Energy, Action and Knowledge) and Friends of Rose Canyon. Through these partnerships, students are given the opportunity for hands-on learning and experi-

mentation at UCSD and the study of nature through field trips to Rose Canyon. Teachers also enjoy the benefit of professional development from the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and additional science materials through PEAK. Weekly after school art classes are offered to students and supported by the generous funding from the Montisano Family for Annie’s Art

School. Annie’s Art School focuses upon introducing students to different media and multicultural aspects of art and has been part of Whitman for over twelve years. We also welcome our newest partner, Villa Musica to Whitman Elementary. We are excited to work with them next year to enhance our invaluable music program. Continued on page 11

It’s really quite easy to be seen in the neighborhood newspaper; submit a photo and caption to: photos@clairemonttimes.com. Recently I was asked what is up with the pet profile page. Quite simply, we love animals. One can always find a picture of our two chocolate labs Sierra & McCoy in every edition plus a variety of local pets which readers continually submit to be profiled. Pets are a part of our family and yours so why not showcase and give them a little love in print. A & M Animal Control Here For You When You Need Them Most As a local Clairemont business this is one name and number to remember. Spring is an especially busy time of year for A&M; the birthing season of the local wildlife is in full affect. What does that mean for us, more unwanted and sometime troublesome wildlife in our backyards and around our property. Whether its raccoons, squirrels, snakes, or opossums there are measures you can take to prevent them from treating your back yard as their own. The number one rule, bring in all pet food and water dishes; never leave them out over night. If you leave a food source they will help themselves and will return often looking for more. For those of you with fruit trees in your yard make a habit of picking up the dropped and rotten pieces. Lastly, be sure all trash can lids are securely closed. If a curious critter has found a way into your attic, crawlspace or chimney, do not try and take matters into your own hands. This

approach can be extremely dangerous and sometimes do more harm than good. As trained, licensed and insured professionals the team at A&M will safely and humanely remove the intruders. A&M never uses poisons or pesticides in their removal process and use only no-kill cages for removal. They can also repair the damage and establish preventative measures to ensure future

access will be eliminated. To complete the visit, a thorough inspection of the property will be performed to address any possible issues. As a 24/7 business, serving all of San Diego County, the team at A&M is only a phone call away. San Diego Unified Embraces Technology in the Classroom The San Diego Unified School District continues to move forward with its implementation of Vision 2020 for Educational Excellence. At the time we adopted it in 2009 the Class of 2020 was in first grade. Now they are in fourth grade. In spite of ongoing budget woes, we have continued forward with our plans to transform our local educational system as the Class of 2020 moves through the system. One key element of the program Vision 2020 is the use of state-of-the-art technology in the classroom. We are in the third year of a five year rollout of our i-21 program, which will place a laptop or other device in the hands of every student in the district. I-21 also includes smartboards and other classroom technology. San Diego has become a nationally recognized leader for educational technology. I visited a middle school math classroom whose teachers were trained in the technology. As students worked on math problems on their netbooks, the teacher was able to see instantly which students were having difficulties with a problem. She then tailored the instruction for them. Another math teacher places all of his lessons online for his students to review at

home and is able to give more individual assistance in the classroom. At the high school level some students who are behind in credits are taking courses online. We even have a virtual high school, I-High. Classroom technology continues to change at a rapid pace. This spring we have authorized the purchase of I-pads for some classrooms. We will need to continue to adapt to new innovations. Our technology program was a key element of Proposition S, approved by voters in 2008. No general operating funds are used for this program. We will eventually see cost savings as we move to more online textbooks. In years past we have spent millions of textbook updates. They will be updated online at a lower cost. It is also interesting to note that another school district that issued laptops to students had a lower dollar cost due to damage or loss than they had with textbooks. Watch for other innovations in the school district as the Class of 2020 progresses towards graduation. San Diego Unified will continue to be a national leader in innovation in education. John Lee Evans President, Board of Education

Your San Diego Padres! News, Notes, and Updates The walls are caving!!! Well, not really. The walls are completely sturdy, stable, and solid at the large outfield confines of Petco Park. However some are heavily debating if those walls should be moved in this coming offseason. Most hitters and baseball personnel will tell you that Petco is 100% a pitchers stadium, meaning that it’s extremely hard for the offense to be consistently successful but a heck of a lot easier for the pitching staffs to minimize offensive damage and output. It would be very interesting to see if this actually happens at seasons end, it would change the dynamic of the entire Padres staff. It is extremely difficult for the younger Padres hitters to come up from the minors and prove themselves at the plate given Petco Park’s shortcomings (or “long”comings given that they want to bring the outfield wall in closer to home plate). We will keep an eye on this development throughout the season and see if it gains any headway. I’m sure the Padres’ hitters wouldn’t mind the change though. Roster Updates: Even though the baseball season is only one month old the Padres have already made quite a lot of significant roster transactions, mostly due to injuries. Here’s a list of players that have spent time on the DL or shuffling between Triple A-Tucson and San Diego: OF Jeremy Hermida, OF/1B Mark Kotsay, OF Blake Tekotte , OF/1B Kyle Blanks, OF Carlos Quentin, RHP Micah Owings, RHP Dustin Moseley, RHP Dale Thayer, RHP Brad Brach, RHP Joe Wieland, LHP Josh Spence, & RHP Tim Stauffer

That’s 12 players, almost half of the entire 25 man roster in just the first month of the season! Not to mention players such as Carlos Quentin, Dustin Moseley, and Tim Stauffer are being counted on to see significant playing time at the Major League level but are still not on the active roster due to lingering injuries. As mentioned in last month’s column this Padres team is young and they are going to take their share of lumps along the way but they haven’t faired badly enough yet for me to count them out. They are still fun to watch, especially the young talent and new players that have been brought in during the offseason. Once some players are healthy this team could surprise and play solid baseball. The season is long, we still have 5 more months of baseball, 6 months if you include the post season filled month of October. There have also been some fun surprises for a team that started the season with question marks. Infielder Andy Parrino has proven to be an amazing player off the bench. He has come in with some clutch hits and been able to start at 2nd base, 3rd base, and shortstop when needed while playing “ok” defense. I’ve also enjoyed watching Andrew Cashner come out of the bullpen and starting pitcher Anthony Bass. They don’t have the most amazing stats but they haven’t been given much run support by the Padres offense to support their stellar pitching performances. The Padres also have to be pleased with newly acquired starting pitcher Edison Volquez, even though he does not have a win on the season yet in 5 starts he leads the team in strikeouts and has held the opposing team’s offense to a .206 batting average. The Padres need more from both 1B/LF Jesus Guzman (who really has no business playing the outfield in the major leagues) and 1B Yonder Alonso period. Out of courtesy and respect to those 2 players I’ll end here. Thanks for reading! Talk to you in a month, Johnny Cantanz johnny.cantanz@yahoo.com

O

n May 13th Evar Carlson Will be Celebrating his 107th Birthday Evar Carlson was born on May 13th, 1905. A Kansas farm boy at heart, he worked hard for everything in his life. He used to shoot small animals and sell the pelts in order to buy school clothes for himself. Growing up he was a man of many talents he could play the piano and the organ by ear and yet he never had any formal training. He was also quite the craftsman, many were considered quite lucky to be gifted one of his custom made wooden canes. At one point in his life he held a position as a security guard on a train. Always aware and taking his job very seriously he had noticed something was not quite right about one particular passenger and

detained him. His instincts were correct, the authorities were awaiting the train’s arrival; he had just captured an escapee from jail. Even though he is widowed he shared his secret of how he knew his wife was “the one.” Her legs, he’s a leg man! He and his wife had two children, a son and a daughter, both of which he has now outlived, he also has two grandchildren. He is well loved at Emeritus at Clairemont and will soon be celebrating his 10th year at the facility. When I mentioned to some of the residents I was here to see Evar everyone perked up and smiled. He has no medical ailments and is ready for the big birthday party. Evar from all of us in the community, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!! I’ll see you on the 13th.
