THE 2017

PRESEASON SUPER 10 ANNIE COSTABILE THE CLARION-LEDGER

1. Pearl (11-4 in 2016)

There isn’t another school in the state that returns as many key starters as Pearl does in 2017. After making it to the 6A championship as juniors, experience may be all that they needed. Jake Smithart returns at quarterback along with Tylan Knight and Johnquarise Patterson to provide Pearl with some explosive offensive power. Teams had a difficult time containing Knight and Patterson as juniors and in their senior season that isn’t going to change. The Pirates have 18 total returning starters who bring back all but 154 of its total yards gained last season. There isn’t much doubt surrounding John Perry’s Pirates and what they’re capable of accomplishing in 2017.

6. South Panola (7-6)

With coach Ricky Woods returning there is really no telling what South Panola will accomplish. One thing is certain though: the Tigers will be good. Woods' return not only brings great coaching but also a jolt of winning mentality back to the program because of everything he accomplished there in the past. On top of Woods' return is a team exploding with talent. Patrick Shegog, a Tulane commit, returns as quarterback after throwing for more than 1,000 yards in 2016. D’Jordan Strong is another piece to the puzzle who is back for the Tigers as a receiver and corner. Teams are expecting a South Panola of the past in 2017.

7. Warren Central (10-3)

2. West Point

The Green Wave are again the favorite to take the class 5A title in 2017 and are led by Dandy Dozen and Mississippi State commit Marcus Murphy, who as a junior rushed for 1,756 yards and 25 touchdowns. He really does everything though. The scary thing for opponents, Murphy is far from the only weapon West Point has. On defense returning are two powerful seniors in linebacker Xavier Fair and lineman Terence Cherry. Cherry had 79 total tackles last season and 23 TFLs. West Point is a well-oiled machine and the same product can be expected in 2017.

Warren Central lost a lot of its threats on the offensive side of the ball including starting quarterback Jesse Wilson and its two leading rushers Demarcus Jones and Joe’vontae Shorter. Despite these losses Warren Central will be well coached and returns power on defense with 6-foot-1, 225-pound middle linebacker Jeremy Miller who had 49 tackles last season and 11 TFLs. Along with Miller is junior defensive tackle Tyrel Smith. Warren Central has three young players coming up who could fill the void Jones and Shorter left. In a tough Region 2-6A the Vikings will be tested right out of the gate with a Week 2 away game against Pearl.

3. Meridian (10-4)

8. Hattiesburg (10-4)

Meridian lost a lot on defense but they return a lot as well. Dandy Dozen defensive end Deuntra Hyman led the junior class and his team in sacks last season with 19. Adding to the defensive threat is cornerback Eli Stringfellow who had 58 tackles and six interceptions in 2016. On offense, Meridian has junior quarterback Tevarrius Adams who finished last season with 1,103 passing yards for nine touchdowns and 414 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Jaquaris Dean is another threat on offense for the Wildcats. Despite what it lost Meridian is a balanced team with big expectations for the 2017 season.

The Tigers lost starting quarterback Julian Conner but return a promising young guy in D’Andre Humbles. Along with Humbles is Dandy Dozen running back Fabian Franklin who rushed for a team-high 954 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. Right behind Franklin are juniors Drexian Allen and Jarod Conner. Allen had 715 rushing yards for eight touchdowns and Connor had 400 yards for eight touchdowns. Considering what Laurel lost this could be the year Hattiesburg makes it out of the south half in 5A.

9. Northwest Rankin (8-5)

4. Tupelo (12-1)

One of the most talked-about teams in 6A, Tupelo went undefeated in the regular season in 2016 before falling to Madison Central in the playoffs. Coach Trent Hammond said they could easily be a better team with a worse record this season because first going undefeated is difficult to do and second its schedule this season is stacked. The Golden Wave open the season against Meridian at home and have to play Brandon, South Panola and Horn Lake on the road. They have a great quarterback-receiver combo in Stephon McGlaun and Jaquerrious Williams. On defense they return three key guys, starting with Dandy Dozen linebacker Jett Johnson. It’s easy to see why there are high expectations for Tupelo this season.

5. Madison Central (10-4)

Madison Central returns a strong defensive unit led by linebacker/strong safety Cam White, who had 67 total tackles, two sacks and one interception last season. Middle linebacker Truett Bourne is another key coming back off of a junior season in which he led the team in tackles with 152. In Region 2-6A, Madison Central is an easy favorite to become region champ.

Northwest Rankin is filling some holes with young talent including at the quarterback position with the loss of Braden Smith. But one huge weapon returning is elite running back Cameron Carroll. Carroll rushed for 1,399 yards last season and 15 touchdowns. Along with Carroll is junior Dee Baker who had 330 rushing yards and four touchdowns in 2016. On defense is standout junior corner Jarrion Jones, who had 22 tackles and three interceptions as a sophomore. Another key will be 6-foot-5, 260-pound defensive end Nik Hogan. It’ll be a tough season in Region 2-6A but Northwest has the coaching and the talent to compete.

10. Clinton (14-1)

There are a lot of question marks surrounding the Clinton football program. For obvious reasons: the Arrows lost a lot of star power after winning the 2016 6A title. One thing not to question is whether or not the Arrows will be competitive in 2017 —they will be. At quarterback, they have two very talented options in Walker Birchfield and MRA transfer Hunter Hulsey. Junior receiver Christian Johnson is going to be a weapon on offense. They are going from being the hunted back to the hunter. It will be a different team for sure but a talented one none the less.

ANSWERING THE CALL To navigate the recruiting process it takes a village — and the right mindset ANNIE COSTABILE THE CLARION-LEDGER

Jaheim Oatis woke up one July morning to find out he had 8,000 Twitter notifications, which is only unusual because Oatis is not a celebrity but instead a middle school football player from Columbia. “Remember the name,” the Tweet said. Oatis, who is going into the eighth grade, was in an Alabama uniform and also wrote he had offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Alabama. Is it more shocking that he had 8,000 people contacting him on Twitter about his future playing collegiate football? Or that three SEC schools already want Oatis on their team? Maybe neither is, but instead, an indicator of the reality of recruiting in 2017. It starts early, it’s nonstop and every school in the country can get ahold of you if they want to, thanks to social media and the internet. Jackson Prep running back Jerrion Ealy is all too familiar with that reality. In Ealy’s case, though, he’s getting it from two sides: baseball and football. In the latter, Ealy is a four-star prospect and the No. 5 player in the state of Mississippi. In the former, he was recently ranked by Perfect Game as the No. 3 overall player in the country for the 2019 class. Now he’s on everyone’s radar (including MLB teams at some point), but like Oatis, his first collegiate offer came before he even played high school athletics. “I wasn’t even thinking about it at that point,” Ealy said. “I had seen Coach (Will) Coggin (former assistant baseball coach at Mississippi State) at Perfect Game and places like that before. One day I went up to Starkville and they offered me.” Ealy was 14 years old and already had an opportunity to play Division I athletics. It was just the beginning and for him, it was a breeze. He was young enough he could still enjoy his “kid days." That all changed following his sophomore football season. Then his offseason time was redirected to traveling to a different college campus every weekend. “It was a blessing,” Ealy said. Beginning Sept. 1, things will change again. Even now just a junior, that date will be the first time college coaches can reach out to Ealy directly, and he’s already preparing himself for daily contact. It doesn’t seem like that big of a deal right? A college coach wants to talk to you about playing for his program, that sounds like a dream come true. It is, but where is the line?

Josh McNulty, director of the High School Football Network, gives final instructions to Cam Akers on Dec. 27, 2016, at the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum in Jackson, Miss.

One Mississippi star who is all too familiar with that line is Florida State running back Cam Akers. Akers finished up his sensational high school career last year for Clinton, and spent the fall of 2016 as the biggest story in Mississippi high school athletics. It was the May following his ninth grade season when Ole Miss made its official offer. By the next year Akers had six more, and by the time it was all said and done, he had offers from more than 30 of the best colleges in the country. There are a lot of responsibilities that come with being the No. 2 prospect in the country. “It became a job,” said Conni, Akers' father. Akers' weekends were reserved for recruiting business: going on visits, answering phone calls and researching every school that offered. His weekdays were taken up with it too. Clinton coach Judd Boswell said there would be 15 or more power 5 conference college coaches at practice at one time. Sometimes they’d just show up. Finding the balance between Akers' future and his present wasn’t easy either. His No. 1 priority was always to win a state championship with his teammates. Boswell said sometimes he would have to be even harder on Akers just to show the team there were no favorites, and Akers took it readily.

From the moment he got that first offer until the day he signed with Florida State, Akers was no longer just a kid. He was Cam Akers: five-star running back, No. 2 overall player in the country, future star. “The biggest misconception is that these kids have it made,” Conni Akers said. “They don’t. They’re not regular kids. They don’t have a regular childhood. They’re inundated with calls, they’re inundated with texts and on top of that, they have to do their school work. I laugh every time I see a statement like, ‘Athletes have it made.’” The reality is recruiting is different for every kid. There’s no formula of how to get it exactly right. Take 2017 top prospects and Callaway teammates Malik Heath and James Williams. For Heath, recruiting has been a fun ride and he enjoys the pageantry of it all, coach Darius Brown said. Williams, on the other hand, likes to go unnoticed until he hits the field. One thing is the same for every young athlete: you can’t get through it alone. For Akers, it was his parents and Boswell who helped him navigate the process. Ealy has his football coach Ricky Black, baseball coach Brent Heavener, track and field coach Marcus Thompson and his parents, Vanessa Simmons and Howard Ealy. Oatis, who will play varsity football this year for Columbia High School, relies on his uncle Rodrick Miller and mother Linda Lee. These are the people that prioritize what’s important, making sure the focus doesn’t stray too much from school and the team. They’re walking that fine line of being present with their current teams while also deciding on their future ones. “He doesn’t take it as pressure,” Heavener said about Ealy. “When you’re getting this much attention nationwide from football and baseball, you kind of just have to laugh it off, go out there and have fun. When it comes down to Friday night or Thursday night on the baseball field, you just gotta go out there and play.” Ealy said he’s preparing now to play both baseball and football at the next level. As things heat up he’s remaining focused on the positive aspects of what is happening to him, while still preparing himself for the business that is college recruiting. “The positive of recruiting is it’s a great opportunity to go get a degree at a four-year university and better your life after sports,” Ealy said. “The negative is it’s a business. You just have to be prepared going into it.”

5 QUESTIONS ANNIE COSTABILE THE CLARION-LEDGER

Where will the top uncommitted DE’s end up? The 2017 class featured top talent at the defensive end position, three of whom are still uncommitted: Callaway’s James Williams, Oak Grove’s Jaden Crumedy and Olive Branch’s Fabien Lovett. For Williams he has it narrowed down to five: Louisville, LSU, Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Alabama. He plans to make his decision before Callaway’s first game August 18. Crumedy has been tight-lipped about where he’s leaning, saying he’s going to make his decision after the 2017 season. He holds offers from seven Division I programs including Mississippi State and Ole Miss. Finally, Fabien Lovett’s been open about his top three schools saying Mississippi State is at No. 1 followed by Alabama and Ole Miss. Teammate Jaylon Reed committed to Mississippi State following Big Dawg camp in July and has not been shy about trying to get his friend to join the #stateteam18. It would not be surprising if Lovett was the next Bulldog to be.

What is the future for Ole Miss and its 2018 recruiting class? The resignation of Hugh Freeze brought a lot of uncertainty to Ole Miss’ 2018 class. The Rebels lost three 2018 commits so far in three-star guard Blaine Scott, three-star defensive tackle Israel Antwine and three-star corner back Jaylin Williams. In the 2019 class they lost three-star corner back Bobby Wolfe. The larger impact it’s had though has been on in-state players deciding between Ole Miss and Mississippi State.

Two of those being running back Fabian Franklin and cornerback Jaylon Reed, who both said Freeze’s resignation changed things for them. Both Reed and Franklin committed to Mississippi State just days following the resignation. Until Ole Miss names a permanent head coach it is going to have a difficult time getting commitments. On top of the unknown at head coach, recruits won’t know about the NCAA fall-out until much later in the year. The early signing day hurts Ole Miss as well. It won’t have enough time to at least clear up the unknown at head coach before they see a lot of potential recruits officially sign with other teams.

What do you need to know about #StateTeam18? The Mississippi State recruiting class for 2018 is filled with top instate talent. The Bulldogs have verbal commitments from three of the top four players in Mississippi as ranked by 247Sports composite: Malik Heath, Fabian Franklin and Kwatrivous Johnson. Along with those three Mississippi State adds West Point stud Marcus Murphy, Clarksdale cornerback Esaias Furdge, Tupelo linebacker Jett Johnson, Olive Branch corner Jaylon Reed, East Central tight end Brad Cumbest and Starkville wide receiver Cameron Gardner. These nine seniors help make up a 2018 class that is ranked No. 22 22 nationally and sixth in the SEC. The most impressive out of state commit is Texas quarterback Jalen Mayden who already has developed quite the bond with his future man downfield in Heath. The entire 2018 class has a very special bond. They’re all in a group chat together and the topic of conversation is what they’re going to accomplish in maroon and white.

Who are the top uncommitted players left in the 2018 class? This class still has a lot of top uncommitted players left besides the aformentioned defensive ends. Among them are Oxford wide receiver Jaquan Webb, Brookhaven defensive tackle Jeffery Johnson, Purvis wide receiver C.J. Bolar and Brookhaven corner Jemaurian Jones. Webb, who is 6-foot-1, claims offers from five Division I programs including Alabama and Ole Miss. Johnson has 18 Division I offers that include Alabama, Florida State and Ole Miss. Bolar, who was previously committed to Iowa State, has been offered by Louisville and Mississippi State along with 18 others. Jones has a top three that includes UCLA, Mississippi State and Ole Miss and plans to announce his final decision before Brookhaven’s first game of the season August 18.

Who are the 2019 recruits to know? The 2019 class is already being talked about as having the potential to be one of the best Mississippi has ever seen. It features one five-star prospect in Louisville’s Charles Moore who is also ranked as the 35th best player in the country. Behind Moore there are nine four-star prospects, including Seminary’s Nathan Pickering (No. 45 nationally). Other names to know are Lafayette’s Brandon Turnage, Jackson Prep’s Jerrion Ealy and Provine’s De’Monte Russell. St. Martin’s Brandon Cunningham is already committed to Miami but also holds offers from Memphis, Southern Miss and Nicholls State. The 2017 season will be a great time to watch these players grow and develop and see their recruiting take off.

MHSAA

6A

TOP 5 TEAMS 1. PEARL (11-4 IN 2016) There isn’t another team in the state and definitely not in class 6A that returns as many key starters as Pearl does. Jake Smithart returns as quarterback for Pearl after passing for over 2,000 yards last season. Tylan Knight, Johnquarise Patterson and Johnny Winston are three skill players who couldn’t be contained last season and in their senior year should be even more difficult to stop.

2. MERIDIAN (10-4)

CHRIS TODD

Clinton head coach Judd Boswell (left) talks with Starkville head coach Ricky Woods before their game on Nov. 4 last year

PLAYERS TO WATCH JETT JOHNSON LB, Tupelo Many would argue that Jett Johnson is the most athletic, skillful linebacker in the state. He has an incredible ability to read plays before they even unfold and his football IQ sets him a part from nearly everyone on the field. Johnson finished last season with 119 total tackles, five for loss, two interceptions and two sacks. The Dandy Dozen is committed to Mississippi State and in his senior year will undoubtedly be a leader for Tupelo and a dominant player in 6A.

TYLAN KNIGHT ATH, Pearl Tylan Knight can do it all, literally. He plays running back, receiver, and safety. You name it, he’s done it and done it well. The 5-foot-7, 165-pound senior had 123 total tackles, four sacks and three interceptions on defense. On offense he had over 1,000 all-purpose yards, four receiving touchdowns, two rushing and two kickoff returns for a touchdown. Expect Knight to be all over the field again for Pearl in 2017.

CAMERON CARROLL RB, Northwest Rankin At 5-foot-11 and 220 pounds Carroll rushed for more than 1,300 yards last season and had 16 touchdowns proving to be a premier running back in 6A. Currently uncommitted, Carroll has Division I offers from Jackson State, South Alabama and Southern Miss. In 2017 expect him to put up big numbers again for Northwest Rankin.

D’JORDAN STRONG CB, South Panola Strong is a great two-way player for South Panola and a key returning senior for the Tigers. As a receiver, he had 639 total yards and six touchdowns. On defense, he finished with 15 total tackles and led his team in interceptions with three.

DEUNTRA HYMAN DE, Meridian’s Dandy Dozen Deuntra Hyman led the junior class in sacks last season with 19. On top of that, he had 63 total tackles and 30 QB hurries. It was just his first season starting on a varsity program.

STORYLINES TO WATCH ANNIE COSTABILE THE CLARION-LEDGER

Clinton without Cam Akers and other star power Not only did the state champions lose the No. 2 player in the country in Cam Akers but they lost fellow stars in wide receiver Kam White and running back Darius Mayberry. Together those three made up 73 percent of Clinton’s total offense last season. Judd Boswell is in his fifth year as head coach of the Arrow program and the one thing to know is regardless of who they lost they will be well coached and they will be competitive. They have two very talented arms in Walker Birchfield and MRA transfer Hunter Hulsey competing for the starting quarterback position, another weapon in junior receiver Christian Johnson and key pieces on defense that start with senior defensive end Ronnie Thomas. From playing with a target on their back last season to now living up to the standard they set for themselves one thing to know about Clinton football in 2017: do not count them out of anything.

The return of Ricky Woods to South Panola After 11 years Ricky Woods returns to South Panola. Woods spent the two previous seasons with Starkville, where he was able to lead the Yellowjackets to a 2015 state championship. During Woods’ tenure at South Panola his team went 74-1 winning four consecutive class 5A championships. His reputation alone brings the Tigers a winning mentality. After finishing 2016 7-6 and suffering a first-round playoff loss to Warren Central it was key South Panola got back the winning mentality on which it was built. Woods takes over for Lance Pogue who carried on that tradition of excellence for the 10 years he was there. Under Pogue South Panola went 126-17, won five state championships and a national championship in 2010. Two key returners for the Tigers are quarterback Patrick Shegog and cornerback/wide receiver D’Jordan Strong. Along with a strong offensive line coming back expect the same old dominant South Panola every Friday night in 2017.

Pearl’s senior class There is no question Pearl is the strongest team on paper entering this season. The Pirates have 18

returning starters who helped their team contend for a 6A state championship. Jake Smithhart is the man in charge on the field at quarterback. As a junior he threw for more than 2,000 yards and 31 touchdowns. He’s just one of many weapons the Pirates have at their disposal. Johnny Winston was Pearl’s leading rusher as a junior. Tylan Knight doesn’t do one thing, he does everything — and well. Johnquarise Patterson is one of Pearl’s threats at receiver, and right behind him is Dylan Kelly and Knight. On defense they are stacked too with linebacker Willie Brown, defensive end Jordan Bailey and cornerback Darmario Nichols just to name a few. The No. 1 team in the state of Mississippi and for good reason, Pearl is undoubtedly the most experienced, well-rounded team going into 2017.

Anybody’s year For the first time in a long time the talk amongst the coaches of 6A is that the 2017 state title is up for grabs. While Pearl is clearly the most experienced even coach John Perry talked about what an even playing field it is this season. “There are so many teams that could play for a state championship,” Perry said. “There are years that you would say South Panola is going to play for it. Who is going to play against them? When they dropped a little bit it opened things up for everyone else. It’s just more even than it ever used to be.” Petal, Pearl, Brandon, Madison Central, Oak Grove, Tupelo, Clinton, Meridian and Starkville — if you go down the list it’s easy to imagine any of these teams in Oxford come December.

Region 3’s championship experience Since 2009 the south rep in the Class 6A state championship has come out of region 3. Oak Grove has made it to the championship three times (2009, 2013 and 2014), beating Tupelo in 2013 and losing to South Panola in its other two appearances. Petal has represented the south two times (2011 and 2015). While Meridian, Brandon and Pearl have each represented the south one time. In these championships games, the North has won all but one. So while Region 3 doesn’t have a problem getting there they have had a problem winning, that could change in 2017. Brandon, Meridian, Petal and Pearl all have the talent to make it to Oxford, but will it be enough to take down the North?

TOP 5 GAMES South Panola at Clinton, Aug. 17: These two teams are playing in the first high school football game of the 2017 season in the Thursday night kickoff game. It won’t be short of excitement with Clinton setting out to prove they are not to be counted out, while South Panola is looking to show they are back to the winning ways of SP’s past.

Oxford at Starkville, Aug. 25: The Little Egg Bowl is exciting for multiple reasons, maybe the biggest is the rivalry between Starkville and Oxford to mirror that of Ole Miss and Mississippi State. This game will also prove just how well Oxford will be able to hang in 6A. This is their first year moving up a class and Starkville will be a great early test to see how the Chargers will do.

Tupelo at Brandon, Sept. 9: A great test between two of the best-coached teams in class 6A. It will be interesting to see how Tupelo’s veteran experience and Brandon’s youth matchup. While Brandon will undoubtedly be competitive in class 6A this will be a great opportunity to prove its young guys can compete with the best in the class.

Pearl at Petal, Sept. 22: After Pearl knocked out Petal in the third round of the 2016 playoffs for a chance at a state title this is no question a huge revenge matchup. Petal lost a lot of weapons on defense but returns offensive weapons in quarterback Jordan Wilson and wide receiver Natorian Watts. It will be a good test to see how much better Pearl’s 2016 junior class has gotten and where Petal is compared to last year.

Starkville at Warren Central, Oct. 27: In a competitive Region 2 that going into it looks pretty even between the top five, this game has the potential to have playoff implications. Last season Starkville just missed the playoffs with an overall record of 7-4. This year Warren Central lost all but one of its starters while Starkville is a question mark with new coach Chris Jones. These two could be fighting for that last spot in region 2 in this game.

While Meridian lost a lot of key pieces, on defense specifically, it returns a lot too. Starting at the quarterback position sophomore threw for over 1,000 yards playing behind senior Eddie Brown at the start of the 2016 season. Skill players the Wildcats return include running back Jaquaris Dean (375 rushing yards and four touchdowns) and receiver Curt Martin (586 receiving yards and four touchdowns). On defense Deuntra Hyman leads the way along with senior cornerback Eli Stringfellow and junior free safety AJ Hopkins (led the team in interceptions last year with seven).

3. MADISON CENTRAL (10-4) Madison Central gave Clinton one of its toughest matchups in the playoffs last season, losing by just four points in the third round. The Jags return a strong defense led by linebacker/strong safety Cam White, who had 67 total tackles last season, two sacks and one interception. Along with White, middle linebacker Truett Bourne is back after a junior season where he led the team in tackles with 152. Kirkland Trahan and Kobe Cole are two more on defense that as juniors dominated.

4. TUPELO (12-1) Tupelo went undefeated in the regular season before losing in the second round of the playoffs to Madison Central 38-19. With Tupelo’s schedule, this season coach Trent Hammond said it could be a better team with a worse record. There’s no question the Golden Wave will be one of the best in 6A. They lost a couple keys players in offensive lineman Jemarion Gillard and two slot receivers in Austin Watkins and Donte Freeman. They have some things to prove before they can say exactly how good they’ll be but have a lethal combo at quarterback and receiver in Stephon McGlaun and Jaquerrious Williams, respectively, and three key guys back on defense including Dandy Dozen Jett Johnson.

5. SOUTH PANOLA (7-6) Despite an underwhelming finish to the 2016 season, South Panola is going to be back in 2017. Ricky Woods returns as head coach and he’s returning to a team that’s exploding with talent. Patrick Shegog returns as the starting quarterback after a junior campaign in which he threw for more than 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Tigers also return an explosive skill player in D’Jordan Strong who plays both ways at receiver and corner.

5A TOP 5 TEAMS NO. 1 WEST POINT (14-1 IN 2016) The defending Class 5A champions open up as the early favorite. The Green Wave return of their most talented players in Mississippi State commit Marcus Murphy. West Point also returns senior wide receiver Jason Brownlee who had double-digit touchdowns a year ago, giving the Green Wave a balanced offensive attack. Behind Murphy’s elite rushing ability, and a threat on the outside with Brownlee, West Point should be the team to beat early on in 5A. Defensively, the Green Wave will be led by returning leading tackler and linebacker Xavier Fair. Fair had 101 tackles and nine tackles for loss in 2016. West Point also returns talented free safety Trey Brownlee. Brownlee finished behind Fair in tackles with 97.

NO. 2 CALLAWAY (7-5)

SUSAN BROADBRIDGE/HATTIESBURG AM

Hattiesburg High School running back Fabian Franklin runs in for a touchdown in a game against Laurel High School .

PLAYERS TO WATCH FABIAN FRANKLIN Hattiesburg Franklin, who battled injuries in 2016, still managed to rush for 954 yards and 15 touchdowns. Franklin, a Mississippi State commit, will also look to cut back on fumbles, coughing up the ball six times and losing four of them. However, Franklin will share the load with other backs in Hattiesburg’s offense in 2017, which should keep him healthy and allow for career numbers in his final season as a Tiger.

MARCUS MURPHY West Point The 2017 Dandy Dozen member was one of the best players in Class 5A in 2016, rushing for 1,756 yards and 25 touchdowns. Murphy’s 1,756 yards ranked third among running backs in 5A. His 25 touchdowns were also tied for second most in 5A. Murphy also put the Green Wave on his back in the 5A State Championship, tallying 141 yards and three touchdowns en route to a 29-8 win over Laurel. The Mississippi State commit will be counted on by West Point to be the primary playmaker in 2017 as it looks to repeat as 5A champs.

MALIK HEATH

STORYLINES TO WATCH JACOB KEMP HATTIESBURG AMERICAN

New faces emerge in 5A Things will get murkier in 5A as three new teams enter after the classification realignment by the MHSAA. Two of those teams, Lafayette and Olive Branch, have won state championships within the last six years, Olive Branch in 2011 and Lafayette in 2011 and 2016. Callaway also brings a ton of tradition to 5A, despite not having won a title since 1984. Still, the Chargers will remain formidable as they will boast one of its most talented rosters with Dandy Dozen wide receiver Malik Heath and defensive end James Williams. With two former champions and a loaded former 6A school, 5A should be a classification to watch.

Wayne County resurgence? One of the biggest shocks of last season was the War Eagles' less than spectacular season. Wayne County did manage to make the Class 5A quarterfinals where it lost to Picayune 40-38, but finished with a 7-6 mark. It was the first time since 2011 that the War Eagles didn't win at least 10 games, and the first in Todd Mangum's tenure as coach at Wayne County. The War Eagles return starting quarterback Zabryan Jackson, who rushed for 851 yards and nine touchdowns. Jackson also passed for 738 yards and seven scores. With the return of its quarterback and a restocked defensive line, Wayne County should be a team to be feared once again in 5A.

Year of the running back Six class 5A teams return their talented running backs in 2017. Hattiesburg returns Dandy Dozen Fabian Franklin while West Point features a Dandy Dozen running back of its own in Marcus Murphy. Deon House, after rushing for 1,319 yards and 15 touchdowns, also returns for Grenada. Lake Cormorant's Brian Jackson rushed for more than 1,000 yards and 13 touchdowns despite having former

Dandy Dozen wide receiver Brandon Smith on the team. Laurel also returns Michael Terrell, who rushed for 861 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2016. But that's not all. Newcomer to 5A, Lafayette, will feature Jamarcus Quarles, who torched 4A for 2,140 yards and 19 scores.

5A south wide open Starting in 2011, Picayune, Laurel and Wayne County represented 5A south in every state championship game except for 2012 (where Pascagoula emerged as a surprise team). Could it happen again? Laurel lost talented quarterback TyQuan Ulmer as well as standout wide receiver Donatrio Drummond. Hattiesburg lost 3,000-yard passer Julian Conner and former Dandy Dozen wide out Jordan Murphy. Even Picayune lost its top player, running back Josh Littles, who ended up with 2,399 yards rushing to go along with 25 rushing touchdowns. Wayne County figures to be better with returning quarterback Zabryan Jackson and Hattiesburg still has Dandy Dozen running back Fabian Franklin. But do they have enough to be considered the favorite? Or could a team like Stone, Pascagoula or even West Jones join the fold in 2017?

Can anyone challenge West Point in the North? 5A south might not have an early favorite, but the north certainly does in defending champion West Point. And rightfully so. The Green Wave still have one of the top players in the state in Marcus Murphy. West Point was relatively unchallenged in 5A. The Green Wave won every playoff game by at least three touchdowns, if not more. They even defeated Laurel by 21 in the title game. But could things go differently in 2017? Defending 4A champion Lafayette still has top running back Jamarcus Quarles. Callaway could also challenge after returning the core of its starters from a year ago. Olive Branch, under new head coach Tyler Turner, should also be much improved. But will it be enough to dethrone the Green Wave?

JEMAURIAN JONES

JAMES WILLIAMS Callaway The second Callaway player to make the list. Williams was dominant in 2016 for the Chargers and notched 90 tackles, 17 tackles for loss and a dozen sacks. The 6-foot-5, 260 pound defensive end has offers from Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss, Louisville, Georgia and Mississippi State. Ranked the second overall player in Mississippi by 247Sports, Williams will be a dominant force once again for Callaway.

NO. 3 LAUREL (13-2) Laurel came up short of raising its third gold ball in four seasons last year. The Golden Tornadoes will also find it much harder to make it without standout quarterback TyQuan Ulmer and wide receiver Dontario Drummond. Laurel does return leading rusher Michael Terrell who ran for 861 yards and 14 touchdowns. Terrell will hope to ease the pressure off new starting quarterback Sinclair Ulmer, who played limited snaps a year ago. The Golden Tornado defense will also need to adapt quickly after losing their top three tacklers from a year ago.

NO. 4 HATTIESBURG (10-4) Despite losing quarterback Julian Conner and Tennessee wide receiver Jordan Murphy, Hattiesburg's offense should still be as potent as ever in 2017. The Tigers return Dandy Dozen running back Fabian Franklin, as well as fellow running back Drexlan Allen. Former running back Jarod Conner will make the switch to quarterback while D'Andre Humbles remains as a weapon on the outside for the Tigers. While the Hattiesburg's defense gave up an average of 25 points per game last season but will look to improve upon that this season with the return of Southern Miss commit, linebacker Will Robinson.

Callaway Heath, ranked No. 1 overall prospect in the state by 247Sports, hauled in 46 passes for 1,213 yards and five touchdowns last season. Heath averaged 110 receiving yards per game, good enough to rank fourth in Class 6A. The senior four-star wide receiver, who is also committed to Mississippi State, will be targeted heavy in 2017 and will likely see a boost in his numbers after Callaway dropped down from 6A to 5A.

Brookhaven A Dandy Dozen cornerback, Jones finished his junior campaign with 38 tackles, five pass deflections and four interceptions. Jones is ranked the third best defensive back in Mississippi by 247Sports. At 6-foot-1 and 170 pounds, Jones is rated as a three-star prospect. A former Mississippi State commit, Jones has scholarship offers from the Bulldogs, Ole Miss, Florida State, Georgia and Oklahoma among others.

There's no question the Chargers are loaded with talent, but they're also benefiting from a drop down to Class 5A, which has the Chargers aiming high in 2017. Callaway returns Dandy Dozen wide receiver Malik Heath and pairs him with returning quarterback Tyrese Winford. Winford threw for 2,403 yards and 11 scores last season. The Chargers will also feature one of 5A’s most dangerous running backs in Lakenith Thompson. Thompson broke out last year, rushing for 1,837 and 17 touchdowns. Defensively, Callaway will be led by defensive end James Williams who has offers from Alabama, LSU, Ole Miss and Mississippi State among others.

NO. 5 LAKE CORMORANT (10-5) CHRIS TODD FOR THE CLARION-LEDGER

A Dandy Dozen duo from Callaway, James Williams (left) and Malik Heath.

TOP 5 GAMES 1. West Point at Lafayette, Sept. 22 Last year’s Class 5A champion squares off with last year’s 4A champ. This time it’s different, though, as Lafayette joins West Point’s region and will be both teams’ region opener.

2. Hattiesburg at Wayne County, Oct. 13 Two teams with storied histories that have met only three times since 1998. Now, the two Class 5A powers are in the same region and could meet with a region title, as well as a No. 1 seed in the playoffs, on the line.

3. Laurel at Callaway, Aug. 18

4. Olive Branch at West Point, Oct. 13

5. Hattiesburg at Laurel, Aug. 26

Callaway, which drops down from Class 6A, will be tested early by longtime 5A power Laurel in both teams’ first game of the season.

A crucial late-year matchup between two teams that will likely be vying for playoff position. Olive Branch will look to push West Point in the North after the Conquistadors failed to win a game in 2016. However, they should be much improved in 2017.

The Battle for the Little Brown Jug always has implications in the Class 5A South picture and this year's match could be even more telling. With a wide open 5A South, the matchup between the Tigers and Golden Tornadoes could determine the favorite to make it to Oxford for the Class 5A title.

Gone is top receiver Brandon Smith, but the Gators aren't short on talent. Senior quarterback Ben Rohrbacher returns after passing for 2,219 yards and 22 touchdowns, 19 of which went to Smith. The Gators also return Brian Jackson at running back. Jackson quietly had one of the best seasons by a running back in Class 5A, rushing for 1,551 yards and 13 scores. While the offense will miss Smith, Lake Cormorant has plenty of help offensively to keep up with its productivity from last year. The Gator defense should still be strong, anchored by safety Jalen Jordan who notched 161 tackles in 2016. Defensive lineman Anthony Keys should be a disruptive force again after finishing with 115 tackles, five tackles for loss and two sacks.

TOP 5 TEAMS 1. EAST CENTRAL (8-5 IN 2016) There’s just too much talent for East Central not to be good. It was close last year, and could have broken through if not for a crushing 70-50 defeat against St. Stanislaus. Rockachaw quarterback Myles Brennan is off to LSU and won’t be around to throw for 549 yards and eight touchdowns this season. The Warriors, meanwhile, return all of their big offensive weapons and should be better on defense thanks to returning stars Andrew Seward, Avery White and Cade Miles. Nobody could stop East Central tailback Tony Brown last season, and the smart money is that nobody has figured it out during the off-season.

2. NOXUBEE COUNTY (9-5)

CHRIS TODD/FOR THE CLARION-LEDGER

St. Stanislaus receiver Chase Rogers (80) tries to break free from Noxubee's Daveon Ball on Dec. 5, 2015, in the MHSAA Class 4A State Football Championship in Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium on the Ole Miss campus in Oxford, Miss.

PLAYERS TO WATCH C.J. BOLAR WR/DB, Purvis The only debate about Purvis’ splendid athlete is whether he’s better on offense or defense. He’s rated as a three-star prospect by 247sports after catching 40 passes for 732 yards and 12 touchdowns and bringing in six interceptions. Bolar also returned of those picks for scores and recorded a kickoff return for a TD against East Central.

TONY BROWN RB, East Central He’s small at 5-foot-9 and 175 pounds, but East Central’s dynamic back lit up 4A last year and looks primed for another big season as a senior. Scoring four touchdowns in the same game would be a career highlight for a lot of players, but Brown did it six times last season. He averaged 255 rushing yards a game, finished with 3,371 yards of total offense and gained an average of 9.1 yards.

BRAD CUMBEST TE, East Central A lot of coaches talk about whether or not teams or players can pass the “eye test,” but it’s hard to imagine anyone passing on East Central’s massive tight end. At 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, Cumbest creates a mismatch whether he’s lined up on the line, in the slot or on the outside. The 3-star prospect, according to 247sports, is committed to Mississippi State. .

STORYLINES TO WATCH New faces

TYLER CLEVELAND THE CLARION-LEDGER

It’s hard to knock off the reigning champ when there isn’t one. With MHSAA reclassification, 4A’s defending champion Lafayette moved up to 5A along with North Pike, leaving many to wonder who is going to step up and take control of the state. West Lauderdale was close last year, but so was Poplarville. Newcomers to the division include New Hope, Lanier and Clarksdale, which dropped from 5A, and Mooreville, which moved up from 3A. Columbia and Houston have dropped to 3A. How will those teams adapt to a tougher region?

Counting Jordan’s succession of Conides, there were four head coaching changes in 4A during the off-season. Longtime Green County coach Johnny Ainsworth retired, opening the door for former Wildcat assistant Michael King to come back, having spent the past three years as George County offensive coordinator. Kosciusko tapped Cleveland coach Kelly Causey to replace interim head coach Sid Wheatley, who landed the head coach job at McLaurin. Causey will be the fifth head coach to lead the Whippets since 2013. West Lauderdale also had a change at the top, with former defensive coordinator Brock Clay replacing Stan McCain, who retired and moved to Alabama.

What about Florence?

The maturation of Maliek Stallings

3. PONTOTOC (13-2)

Noxubee County quarterback Maliek Stallings is the returning leader in passing in 4A, and that’s significant. In state championship seasons in 2012, 2014 and 2015, the Tigers thrived on solid quarterback play. Before he was carving Jackson State up as the Alabama A&M quarterback last season, Deangelo Ballard led Noxubee to a championship in 2012. Timorrius Conner led Noxubee to back-toback titles in his junior and senior year. Now it’s Stallings – Conner’s cousin – who is hoping to bring home another state championship. Stallings isn’t huge at six feet and 170 pounds, but he is a playmaker. If his junior season is anything like his sophomore season, Noxubee will be tough to beat.

On paper, Pontotoc looks like a team that is ready to make some noise. The Warriors knocked off Noxubee County in the third round of the playoffs last year and should be back looking for more in 2017. They must find a way to replace quarterback Jacob Carter, who’s off to East Central Community College after throwing for 2,800 yards and 31 touchdowns as a senior.

Reclassification

Steve Pruett is building something special at Florence. The lone 4A team in the Jackson metro area has shown steady improvement over the past couple of years. They proved that 10-3 record in 2014 wasn’t just a flash in the pan by posting a 12-3 record last year that included playoff wins over Purvis and East Central. They will have to lean on the running game, at least early, to have that kind of success this year as they try to find a replacement for departed senior quarterback Brad Dennis and the team’s top four receivers. The good news for Eagles fans is that tailback Degerrick Lee is back for his junior season after averaging 151 yards a game last year with 22 touchdowns. If the defense can gel around catalysts Federico Washington and Hunter Searcy, the Eagles should tough to beat.

4. POPLARVILLE (12-2)

Stanislaus rebuilding St. Stanislaus has been a constant presence in the 4A title race for the past couple of years, but they have some major holes to fill if they want to put together another playoff run in 2017. Quaterback Myles Brennan is off to LSU, tight end Chase Rogers is gone to UL-Lafayette and leading receiver Corbin Blanchard is enrolled at the Air Force Academy. Head coach Bill Conides moved on to Denham Springs (Louisiana). So what’s left? New coach Jeff Jordan, a former St. Stanislaus assistant and friend of Conides, is unlikely to change the pass-happy offensive scheme. Max Favre is the leading returning passer, but he only attempted four passes a year ago. Harrison Brewer is the team’s leading returning receiver – he caught 44 passes for 582 yards and four touchdowns last season.

JIM LYTLE / FOR THE CLARION-LEDGER)

Noxubee County quarterback Maliek Stallings is the returning leader in passing in 4A.

ESAIAS FURDGE CB, Clarksdale Furdge is as close to a lockdown defender as you are going to find in Mississippi. The Clarksdale cornerback had a splendid junior season – he was credited with 17 passes defended and 44 tackles and he came up with nine interceptions.

COLE SMITH OT, Pontotoc Pontotoc’s big offensive lineman is the key part of a Warrior offense that rolled to more than 400 yards of total offense a game a year ago. At 6-foot-4 and 280 pounds, Smith held a dozen FBS offers when he committed to LSU back in March as a three-star recruit.

You can never count out the Tigers, and that doesn’t change in 2017. Noxubee County had a down-year by its own standards last year. It started the season 2-4, but rattled off seven wins in a row before dropping a 29-20 third-round playoff game to Pontotoc. The Tigers return starting quarterback Maliek Stallings, who is coming off an excellent sophomore season. They also bring back junior Jaqualyn Smith, who averaged 9.2 yards a carry last year, and Kyziah Pruitt, who caught 70 passes for 1,248 yards and 14 touchdowns. The Tigers should be good on defense again, thanks to returning playmakers like Miles Smith (88 tackles last year, including 12.5 sacks) and stalwarts like L.C. Clemons and Terry Joiner.

TOP 5 GAMES 1. Senatobia at Pontotoc, August 25

2. Noxubee County at Meridian, September 9

3. Mendenhall at West Lauderdale, October 13

4. East Central at St. Stanislaus, October 13

5. Purvis at Poplarville, October 20

We’re going to get a good look at two contenders for the state title going head-to-head right off the bat in the second weekend of the season. Senatobia had, at least statistically, the best defense in 4A last year and Pontotoc had the second-highest scoring offense. Should be a barn-burner.

Noxubee County always plays a tough non-region schedule, and this year is no exception. They open with Starkville, but no game will present the kind of challenge this Week 4 meeting with Meridian will. The Wildcats are preseason ranked No. 4 in the Super 10 for a reason. But you can bet Tyrone Shorter’s Tigers won’t back down from the challenge.

The Knights have gotten the better of Mendenhall in both meetings since they joined Region 5-4A, but both games have been close. They nipped the Tigers 28-27 in 2015 and beat them 35-28 a year ago. West Lauderdale certainly has its sights set much higher than beating their best divisional rival, but if they want to win the region, they have to get past this game.

The same night the Knights and Tigers lock horns, East Central travels to Bay St. Louis for a game the East Central Warriors probably have circled on the schedule. They lost a 70-50 barn-burner last year because they just couldn’t stop Myles Brennan and the Rockachaw offense. Brennan’s gone now, and East Central should be even better.

The Hornets put it on the Tornadoes 38-6 last year to avenge a 23-14 loss from the year before in what has turned into a great rivalry game in Region 7-4A. This game has decided the region champion the past two seasons, and there’s no reason to think that’s going to change this year.

The Hornets are loaded with returning talent. Starting quarterback Antonio Barnes is back, and so is starting tailback Austin Bolton and receiver Tyson Holston. More importantly, Poplarville has five offensive linemen who will be seniors this year. Junior Ross Barnett is a playmaker on defense who led the team in tackling and finished with 10 tackles behind the line as a sophomore a year ago. All this comes from a team that finished 12-2 a year ago and outscored opponents 232-43 in region play.

5. WEST LAUDERDALE (12-1) Perhaps no team had a more disappointing trip to the playoffs than the Knights did a year ago. After rolling through an unbeaten regular season and a first-round win over North Pike, West Lauderdale dropped a 35-23 second-round game at home against Purvis. Much of that team returns, including two splendid running backs in Damion Mack and Kurt Rackley and the steady hand of quarterback Turbo McKee.

TOP 5 TEAMS 1. HAZLEHURST (12-1 IN 2016) Coach Todd McDaniel’s Indians open 2017 as the team to beat. They rolled to a 12-1 record and went 5-0 in region play last year thanks to an offense that featured four 1,000-yard rushers, along with a defense that held opposing teams to 12.8 points a game and pitched three shutouts. Much of the core of that team returns, especially on offense. Three of those four leading rushers are back — Wykeen Craft, Tim Steward and Quamead Stewart — plus three of the five starting offensive linemen. Steward doubles as the team’s leading returning tackler and pass-rusher. If senior defensive linemen Qeutarious West and Demetrius Swilley can replicate their production from last year and junior cornerback Larry Wilson continues to mature, it’s going to be tough to move the ball against the Indians.

SPECIAL TO THE CLARION-LEDGER

Raleigh's Kris Moncrief is one of the state's best juniors.

PLAYERS TO WATCH CHRIS CLARK OT, North Panola There are several quality offensive linemen at the 3A level, but none have the skillset and versatility of North Panola’s senior offensive tackle. At 6-foot-4 and 260 pounds, Clark is long and lean for an offensive lineman but is quick and aggressive. He helped pave the way for the Cougar offense to roll to 2,754 rushing yards and 2,406 passing yards a year ago.

KENNY GAINWELL QB, Yazoo County It’s hard to find anything Yazoo County’s biggest offensive weapon can’t do with the football in his hands. He started at quarterback all 12 games for the Panthers last season, and ended up with 1,184 yards passing and 1,292 more on the ground, scoring 29 total touchdowns. Oddly enough, his best game came against the best opponent his team faced — he racked up 323 yards of total offense against Velma Jackson in a 23-20 loss.

KRIS MONCRIEF RB, Raleigh The cousin of former Ole Miss star and current Colts receiver Donte Moncrief could be primed for another big season. Moncrief's breakout year came last season when he rushed for 1,975 yards and 27 touchdowns. His numbers would have been much higher had he played full games in blowout wins over Mize, McLaurin and St. Andrew’s. He’s a prototypical tailback, standing 6-foot-2 and weighing in at 235 pounds.

5 SEASON STORYLINES TYLER CLEVELAND THE CLARION-LEDGER

Kemper County gets clean slate It’s weird to not have the defending state champs among the teams to watch, but new Kemper County coach Josh Pulphus has a massive rebuilding project on his hands. Gone are quarterback Eric Clark, Jr., leading rusher Chandler Roberts and prolific receiver D.J. Clayton. The good news for Pulphus, who is in his first year as a head coach after serving as defensive backs coach at Starkville, is that he returns a ton of playmakers on defense. He has pass-rushing outside linebacker Recardre Moore, defensive ends Trajan Tanksley and Dorsey Bourrage and safety Senus Williams coming back. If the Wildcats can survive a tough early part of the schedule that includes games against Quitman, West Lauderdale and Louisville, they will certainly be battle-tested when they start region play.

Charleston’s rebuild Every year you think Charleston is going to be down, they seem to come up with a new crop of athletes and roll to 13 or 14 wins. But that’s going to be a tall task for coach Scott Martin this year. He’s got to find a way to replace more than 70 percent of the Tigers’ total offensive yards from last season, including quarterback Tre Truly, leading rusher Billy Kimble and top receiver Rickey Sutton. Senior Fred Hervey will have to build on his junior season, in which he rushed for 411 yards as a backup. Defensive end Laderius Curtis is the lone returning star on defense, having tallied 11.5 sacks a year ago. The Tigers may well end up back in the playoffs thanks to a top-heavy Region 2-3A, but they will have to find some more playmakers on offense to make another deep run.

Houston, we have a solution Just when you think you’ve got a good idea of who the big boys are in 3A, in come the Houston Hilltoppers. Coach Ty Hardin’s squad, which went 8-4 last

season, dropped from 4A to 3A due to MHSAA reclassification. They return big-time playmaker Urriah Shephard, the senior quarterback who racked up 2,331 total yards last year, and sensational sophomore running back/linebacker Bobby Townsend. Houston just couldn’t get over the hump against Region 4-4A counterparts Noxubee County and Louisville, but dropping down to 3A and sliding into 4-3A with Choctaw County, Hatley, Aberdeen, Nettleton and Pontotoc — five teams that went a combined 13-30 last year — may be just what the doctor ordered.

Welcome, Jeff Davis County It’s the beginning of a new era in Prentiss. With the consolidation of Bassfield and Prentiss High Schools, Jeff Davis County High was born, and with it the potential for a powerhouse 3A program. The school took a big step towards success with the decision to retain Bassfield coach Lance Mancuso as head coach and athletic director. The Jaguars might not be world-beaters right away, but then again, they might. Bassfield was set to return 18 of the 60 players on a team that finished 12-3 last year, and Prentiss was set to return 30 of 37 on a team that went 8-5. If anyone can bring the two teams together and create success, it’s probably Mancuso, who has led Bassfield to an 118-20 record in the last nine years.

The maturation of Antavious Willis Velma Jackson’s young quarterback isn’t so young anymore. The 6-foot dual-threat QB is back for his junior season with two years as starter. Willis showed steady improvement from his freshman year in 2016 with 1,207 yards passing, 967 more rushing and 30 total touchdowns. With his help, the Falcons averaged 53.7 points in three playoff games before they met Charleston in the fourth round and fell 46-17. He’ll be hard-pressed to improve on those numbers in 2017, as Velma only returns one player with more than a single reception.

CAMERON YOUNG DL, Franklin County It’s hard to believe that Young doesn’t have a committable offer yet, but Franklin County’s 3-star defensive lineman probably won't have that problem for long. He’s 6-foot-4, 280 pounds and coming off a season in which he made 91 tackles, 10 sacks and came down with one interception from his inside tackle position. He’s received interest from all three in-state FBS schools, Florida State, Georgia and Jackson State, among others.

The Cougars have all the ingredients to be good in 2017, and it starts with junior quarterback Kenneth Jefferson. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound dual-threat quarterback threw for 2,406 yards and ran for 580 more with 37 total touchdowns last year, and he’s got good protection up front as well as six senior receivers with significant playing time returning. The questions that remain center around a defense that started out hot last year before allowing an average of 36.3 points a game over their last four contests. The Cougar defense struggled to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks with just 10 sacks in 13 games, and it came back to bite them towards the end of the season.

3. RALEIGH (13-2) Jeff Stockstill’s Lions put together a fantastic season in 2016, but they’ll have to replace some key pieces of their offense to have another shot at the 3A state title this year. The Raleigh offense didn’t throw it around a lot last year, but when it did, quarterback Justin Gammage was efficient. He completed 56 percent of his passes and only threw three interceptions in 15 games. He’s gone, and so are two of the team’s three leading rushers. The good news is that Kris Moncrief is back for his senior year after setting 3A on fire with nearly 2,000 rushing yards.

4. SEMINARY (10-4)

NATHAN PICKERING DE, Seminary The Bulldogs’ 6-foot-5, 245-pound defensive end more than passes the eye test, and he’s only a junior. Pickering racked up 72 tackles and made 26 stops behind the line of scrimmage last year. What’s cool about that is that he seemed to be at his best in tight games. He had nine tackles, including four TFLs, in a 34-29 win over Lawrence County and averaged three stops for a loss in the first three rounds of the playoffs. He’s the third-ranked player in the state according to 247sports.

2. NORTH PANOLA (10-3)

SUSAN BROADBRIDGE / HATTIESBURG AMERICAN

Bassfield prepares for last year's game against Purvis. Bassfield has consolidated with Prentiss to form Jeff Davis County.

TOP 5 GAMES

Bulldogs head coach Brian Rials seems to always have a stable of running backs, but he’s going to need someone to step up early to replace Javaris Crosby and Felix McCullum off last year’s squad. The good news is he’s got a two-year starter at quarterback returning in junior Jeff Miller. Miller didn’t set the world on fire — he only threw for 42 yards a game — but he has a full grasp of the offense and Rials thinks he can be like a coach on the field. What the Bulldogs lack in offense, they make up for on defense. They return the state’s third-ranked player, defensive end Nathan Pickering, and tackle Qvaius Currie, a 6-foot-1, 275-pound defensive tackle who made 23 stops.

5. TYLERTOWN (11-1)

1. Seminary at Poplarville, Sept. 1

2. North Panola at Lafayette, Sept. 1

3. Callaway at Hazlehurst, Sept. 8

You know what would make a statement? If Seminary stepped up in class and knocked off the defending 4A South State champs on the road. Either way, this game should serve as a measuring stick to see just how serious the Bulldogs are about making a run in 3A South.

So you say you’re ready for a challenge, North Panola? Well this game on the road against the defending 4A state champs definitely qualifies. The rest of the Panthers’ non-region schedule shouldn’t offer much of a challenge, so this game will have to serve as our only eye test for North Panola before late September.

Hazlehurst has absolutely loaded its non-region schedule, but none are tougher than this week 4 meeting with the Chargers. Callaway is packed with talent, and will present a challenge to the Indians’ defense. Whether or not they meet that challenge will tell you a lot about Hazlehurst’s title hopes.

4. Tylertown at Jeff Davis County, Sept. 29 One of the 3A heavyweights travels to Prentiss to welcome the new kid on the block to Region 8-3A in style. Tylertown is coming off an 11-1 season, going 5-0 inside the division. It will get a great challenge right off the bat with the Jaguars, who will be playing their first game in their new region.

5. Velma Jackson at Raleigh, Oct. 27 This meeting of heavyweights won’t happen until the last week of the season and the week of Halloween. That’s appropriate, because both of these teams should be scary good. This game will likely determine the Region 6-3A championship and should have playoff seeding implications.

The Chiefs are going to be solid again if they can fill a few holes left by graduation. Linebacker Kirk Jefferson and defensive end Kadarious Magee are going to be tough to replace — they combined for 11.5 sacks and 47 total stops behind the line of scrimmage last year. But head coach Osborne Holmes returns starting quarterback Da’bryan Magee, who was efficient last year with 19 touchdowns and seven interceptions and led the team in rushing with 823 yards and 11 more scores.

TOP 5 TEAMS 1. CALHOUN CITY (15-1 IN 2016) No reason for the defending champs to be anywhere else, especially with the return of quarterback Jojo Gray. Gray passed for 403 yards and six touchdowns but also ran for 866 yards and 10 scores. The Wildcats also return bruising running back Keshun Parker. Parker ran through teams to the tune of 1,054 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns. Parker will become even more important as he returns to lead the defense after tallying 126 tackles from his linebacker position. The Wildcats will have a tougher road to travel in order to get to Oxford for the state championships but still remain the team to beat.

2. PHILADELPHIA (7-5)

CHRIS TODD, FOR THE CLARION-LEDGER

The Calhoun City Wildcats celebrate with the Class 2A trophy after beating Bay Springs 22-8 on Dec. 2, 2016, at the MHSAA State Football Championships in Davis Wade Stadium on the Mississippi State University campus in Starkville, Miss.

PLAYERS TO WATCH DON RAGSDALE RB, Pisgah Ragsdale took the 2A world by storm with a 3,000 yard rushing campaign. Ragsdale had five games of more than 300 yards, capped off by a career high 453-yard, five touchdown performance against St. Joe-Madiosn in his ninth game of the season. However, can Ragsdale top that performance now that teams know who he is? Ragsdale is no longer flying under the radar after his junior season .

CORTNEY SMITH RB, Philadelphia Smith made the Tornado offense go in 2016. Smith led the Tornadoes in rushing yards (1,248) as well as total yards and touchdowns (17). Despite those impressive numbers, Smith was even more impressive as a sophomore, rushing for 1,496 yards and 25 rushing touchdowns. Smith, however, could be ready for an even bigger season in 2017. One thing on Smith’s side is his experience. The senior tailback is now a three-year starter and is now playing behind a more seasoned offensive line.

STORYLINES TO WATCH JACOB KEMP HATTIESBURG AMERICAN

No more Bassfield Teams in Class 2A can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that the Yellowjackets are no longer in 2A. Since 2009, Bassfield won five state championships and was a remarkable 5-0 in championship games. Even more remarkable was the fact that Bassfield played in eight South State championship games since 2008. But now, who will step in and take over the reins that Bassfield held for so long? Perry Central and Heidelberg are the obvious choices in 2A South. But can Philadelphia become the new power in the North after its drop down from 3A to 2A?

Bay Springs rebuilding The Bulldogs have a long way to go in order to return to the success they had in 2016. Bay Springs nearly captured the 2A title but fell short. Now, Dan Brady’s crew will have to find an answer offensively after senior do-it-all player Jaylin Jones is gone. Jones accounted for 2,346 total yards and 31 touchdowns in 2016. Also gone is star quarterback Caderius Lee. Lee was nearly as effective as Jones, throwing for 1,473 yards and 23 touchdowns. Lee also rushed for 361 yards and five touchdowns. The Bulldogs aren’t out of the 2A race, however, but will need to find answers offensively in order to repeat their success of 2016.

Philadelphia, not Calhoun City, the favorite in the North Calhoun City is still top dog in 2A. But that could be short lived. Philadelphia returns 20 starters from a

year ago when it finished 7-5 in a loaded 3A South that included teams like Seminary, eventual champion Kemper County, Hazlehurst and Raleigh. But the Tornadoes aren’t looking at the past. Philadelphia, which returns its quarterback, running back and all five offensive linemen will feature a ballcontrol offense with a talented defense on the other side of the ball. Coach Teddy Dyess won championships in Lumberton but has yet to do so in Philadelphia. This could be his year.

2A South wide open No more Bassfield and a rebuilding Bay Springs could mean a new 2A South champion not named Bassfield or Bay Springs for the first time since East Marion in 2011. So, who will step up? Perry Central is the odds on favorite with so many returning starters, and like Philadelphia, a drop down from 3A to 2A. But Heidelberg won’t go quietly and neither will Taylorsville, a longtime 2A power. But perhaps another team could come into the fold and shock everyone.

Can Ragsdale top last season? Don Ragsdale burst onto the 2A scene with a 3,081 yard and 38 touchdown campaign. The senior running back churned out more yards than any other running back in Class 2A. But can he do it again? Ragsdale is now bigger and stronger, but now teams are gunning for him. He will have a target on his back, but will it matter? It will come down to Ragsdale’s offensive line. If they can get it done in the trenches, then Ragsdale could have even better numbers and finish one of the state’s most impressive two-year stints at running back. JARED THOMAS

The Pisgah Dragons enter the field during the Puckett vs Pisgah game on Oct, 27.

ARTEISE MYLES RB, South Delta If it wasn’t for Ragsdale, Myles would have been considered the top running back in class 2A. Myles ran for 2,234 yards and 22 touchdowns last season, leading the Bulldogs to a 9-4 mark. Myles returns alongside an experienced offensive line and could challenge both Smith and Ragsdale as the top running back in 2A North. Myles is also a three-year starter at running back for the Bulldogs.

KESHAUN PARKER RB/LB, Calhoun City Parker was key in leading Calhoun City to a state championship in 2016. Parker was the second leading rusher on the team with 1,054 yards and 19 touchdowns. Parker was a bruiser both on the ground and while playing linebacker for the Wildcats. He was second on the team in total tackles (126). He also notched a sack and forced four fumbles.

TREVION HILLIE QB, Newton One of an unknown quantities in Class 2A, Hillie surprised teams with his dual-threat ability. Hillie torched teams through the air for 1,818 yards and 22 touchdowns. And that was in just eight games. Hillie also took advantage of his running ability and tacked on 351 yards and four more rushing touchdowns. Now in his second year under offensive guru Ryan Smith, Hillie’s stock is on the rise and could see his passing and rushing numbers skyrocket.

The number one contender for Calhoun City comes in the form of the Tornadoes. Philadelphia will be one of the deepest and most talented teams in not just 2A North, but all of 2A. The Tornadoes return 19 out of 22 starters from a 7-5 year in Class 3A. The Tornadoes lost to Raleigh in the first round of the playoffs 26-21. Top running back Cortney Smith returns to lead the offense after rushing for 1,248 yards and 17 touchdowns. However, the strength of the Tornadoes will lie with their defense. Linebacker Javon Pickens return as a force in the middle after notching 99 total tackles. Both Tornado outside linebackers, Demontae Moore and Malik Collier, return as well. Moore and Collier combined for 107 tackles and 21 tackles for loss. Along the defensive line, Chris Griffin will anchor things after leading the team with 106 tackles.

3. PERRY CENTRAL (6-6) Another team that dropped down from 3A to 2A is Perry Central. Chip Bilderback, in his second season at the helm of the Bulldogs, is optimistic about his team’s chances as he returns 15 starters from a 3A playoff team. The Bulldogs bring back quarterback Tijuane Bolton as well as running back Mckail Sumrall. The Bulldogs will have to replace 1,000-yard rusher George Bolton, but Sumrall should fill that role nicely after he rushed for 972 yards and 14 touchdowns last season. Perry Central’s main strength, much like Philadelphia’s, will lie with its depth.

4. EAST WEBSTER (11-3)

TOP 5 GAMES 1. Calhoun City at East Webster, Oct. 6 It’s a rematch of last season’s 2A North State championship game. But what’s more, the two could meet later down the road in the playoffs once again.

2. Taylorsville at Perry Central, Sept. 22 The first true 2A test for Perry Central. Taylorsville is a storied school in 2A and despite having a down season, should be back in the thick of things in 2A. However, Perry Central has the depth and the experience from 3A on its side.

3. Newton at Philadelphia, Oct. 6

4. Puckett at Pisgah, Sept. 29

5. Heidelberg at Bay Springs, Oct. 26

Two teams that will battle for the Region 4-2A title that return a lot on both sides of the ball. Newton will feature quarterback Trevion Hillie and talented wide receivers Zackariah Johnson and Zachary Johnson. Newton finished 7-4 last season and could take the next step into truly contending for Class 2A. However, the Tornadoes stand in the way. Philadelphia returns 19 of 22 starters and is considered one of the favorites of Class 2A.

These two teams met last season in the regular season finale to determine who would win Region 6-2A and the Dragons prevailed 28-20. Puckett and Pisgah shared similar fates in 2A as they both fell in the first round of the playoffs. Both teams return the core of both of those rosters, but now the two teams meet in the first region game of the season, which will go a long way in determining playoff seeding.

The Oilers came up one game short of the Class 2A South State championship game, losing to Bassfield 41-22. But now Bassfield is gone and the Oilers are ready to make their stamp on 2A South along with Perry Central. In order for Heidelberg to be considered among the teams to watch in 2A South, however, it will need to knock off the team that defeated Bassfield last season: Bay Springs. The Bulldogs lost 19 of 22 starters while the Oilers return most of its starters. But in order for Heidelberg to make a deep run, it will need a confidence-boosting win over Bay Springs in the regular season finale.

You can’t mention top teams in class 2A without mentioning East Webster. The Wolverines, two years removed from a runner-up finish in the Class 2A final, have made the playoffs 15 times since 2000. Look for them to continue their tradition of excellence in 2017. East Webster returns standout quarterback Charlie Brand. Brand was instrumental in leading the Wolverines to the 2A quarterfinals and finished with 1,378 yards and 14 touchdowns passing. However, East Webster has holes to fill on defense. Linebackers Luke Wilson and Spencer Carden, who combined for 258 tackles, are gone.

5. BALDWYN (10-5) The Bearcats could make a case for being No. 4 on this list. Baldwyn should be strong once again after making a trip to the 2A South State championship game against Calhoun City. The Bearcats return starting quarterback John Swinney as well as Swinney’s favorite target in the passing game, Calvin Harris. Swinney passed for 2,200 yards and 21 touchdowns last season while Harris hauled in 48 receptions for 1,105 yards and 13 touchdowns. Baldwyn will have to replace the production from senior running backs Jalon Clark and Ovurton Gates who combined for 1,720 yards and 30 touchdowns.

TOP 5 TEAMS 1. SIMMONS (13-0 IN 2016) The Blue Devils currently hold the longest win streak in Mississippi high school football with 25 straight victories, a span that includes two 1A championships. 2017 has the potential to be the third straight year of dominance for Simmons. Other than losing two offensive linemen and quarterback Chandler Robinson, who transferred out of the program, Simmons returns all its key players.

2. LUMBERTON (12-3) Lumberton powered through 1A’s south half. It’s only two losses came in the first three weeks of the season to 3A’s Perry Central and 4A’s Poplarville. After falling to Poplarville the Panthers went on an 11-game win streak before losing to Simmons in the 1A championship, 30-26. They return 17 starters and with them an expectation to be a championship contending team yet again.

3. NANIH WAIYA (13-2)

CHRIS TODD

Simmons running back Marquez Pam (5) runs past Lumberton's Chrishawn Bowens (10) on Dec. 2, 2016, at the MHSAA State Football Championships in Davis Wade Stadium on the Mississippi State University campus in Starkville, Miss.

PLAYERS TO WATCH MARQUEZ PAM RB, Simmons Marquez Pam was unstoppable last season — no one could bring him down. The 6-foot, 210-pound running back rushed for over 2,200 yards last season and 31 touchdowns. His best game was against Falkner when he had 286 yards rushing and nine touchdowns.

JARVEON HOWARD RB, East Marion One of the best running backs in the state of Mississippi, Howard holds 11 Division I offers. The 5-foot-10, 202-pound running back had 1,260 rushing yards for 18 touchdowns and averaged nine yards a carry in his junior season. He will again be East Marion’s main offensive weapon and no doubt a feature running back in 1A.

TAEMAUS GLASS RB/LB, Nanih Waiya Glass does it all for Nanih Waiya and he does it well. As a running back he rushed for 1,517 yards and 26 touchdowns. As a linebacker, he had 47 tackles and one sack. Expect another explosive year from Glass in 2017.

CHRIS SMITH RB, Nanih Waiya Smith had back to back 1,000-yard plus rushing seasons finishing 2016 with 1,200 and 25 touchdowns. On top of that, he had 436 receiving yards for eight more touchdowns. Smith is Nanih Waiya’s offensive weapon and it seems no one in 1A can contain him.

DONNELL BUCKNER WR, Lumberton In his junior season, Buckner had 896 receiving yards for 16 touchdowns. He was a huge key in leading Lumberton to the 1A state championship game. In 2017 with another year of experience under his belt there’s no limit on what Buckner will accomplish.

STORYLINES TO WATCH ANNIE COSTABILE THE CLARION-LEDGER

Simmons win streak Simmons currently holds the longest win streak in Mississippi high school football and has strong potential to keep it going. The Blue Devils return all their key players minus quarterback Chandler Robinson who transferred this offseason. Currently, Tydarius Gibson and Antavius Rounds are competing for the starting spot. Simmons also saw a coaching change bringing on former Grenada assistant Wade Tackett as head coach. Tackett has an entirely new offense he plans to implement saying he wants to make this team multidimensional. Of course, Simmons one-two punch combo in Marquez Pam and Demarrius Turner at running back will still be an identity for this team. They just plan to have more than one this season. Tackett also says their strength will be on the defensive side of the ball.

Region realignment There were a lot of changes to the regions in Class 1A after MHSAA’s reclassification. Region one added H.W. Byers, Okolona and Potts Camp from Class 2A. Region two took Durant, McAdams and Montgomery County from 1A’s region three and Coffeeville from 1A’s region one. Region three added Hamilton, Vardaman and West Lowndes from class 1A region one. The biggest addition though was 2A’s East Marion to 1A’s region four. In past two seasons, Smithville and Simmons have coasted through the regular season pretty easily. Coaches feel like the realignment will make the North half more competitive and more balanced.

is playing with a target on their back, and he says they aren’t focusing on that but other teams will be. Last season Simmons did not have a hard time skating through the north half but there were tested in the championship against Lumberton who lost 30-26. Simmons could make it through another undefeated season with all of the talent it brings back but whoever they face out of the South will be ready. Lumberton and Nanih Waiya are the two favorites heading into the season and both bring back 17 starters from teams that were talented even as the young guys. If someone does bring Goliath down it may be in the championship game.

Strength in the south half Whoever comes out of the south half will be battle tested as Lumberton coach Zach Jones put it, and he’s right. Between Nanih Waiya, Noxapater, Lumberton, Resurrection, Stringer and now East Marion the south half is stacked. Every weekend will be a grind and with both region three and four returning strong senior classes, along with talent they also have experience. 2017 will be a great year of competition in 1A’s south half.

Warriors lost their first game of the season to 2A opponent Union and went on to win 13 straight before falling to Lumberton in overtime 50-48. Nanih Waiya returns 17 starters including a two headed monster in running backs Taemaus Glass and Chris Smith.

4. RESURRECTION (10-3) Resurrection finished just behind Lumberton in Region 4-1A. Coming back are three talented junior running backs, including Cearly Parker who rushed for 443 yards and eight touchdowns. Parker also is part of a strong defensive unit returning that includes Becht Rowell and Jackson Byrd. Rowell had 131 tackles in 2016 while Byrd had 82 and 24 TFLs.

5. SMITHVILLE (11-3) Smithville lost a lot of its offense including starting quarterback Heath Noe and its leading rusher in Dee Moore. What it does have coming back is an experienced defense. Chet Moffett led the team in tackles with 112 last season while junior middle linebacker Layne Williams had 72 and four sacks. They’ll be the same physically dominant team that they were in 2016. SUSAN

East Marion moving down to 1A

BROADBRIDGE/

East Marion went 1-10 last season and many are anxious to see what they are able to accomplish in 1A-region four. Arguably the toughest region with teams like Lumberton, Resurrection and Stringer East Marion will have to prove itself. The biggest weapon for the Eagles is undoubtedly running back Jarveon Howard who in his junior season proved to be one of the top running backs in the state. Howard will be the spark for his team we’ll have to wait to see if East Marion lights up or burns out in 1A.

HATTIESBURG AMERICAN

Who can bring down Simmons? Simmons head coach Wade Tackett knows his team

TOP 5 GAMES 1. Simmons at West Lowndes, Aug. 25

2. Winona at Nanih Waiya, Sept. 1

3. Lumberton at East Marion, Sept. 29

4. Shaw at Simmons, Sept. 29

5. East Marion at Stringer, Oct. 20

New head coach Wade Tackett wanted his team to experience playing tough opponents in the first few weeks of play and that’s exactly what West Lowndes will be. On top of it being over two hours to drive to, the Panthers will be a physical test for Simmons.

Nanih Waiya has three tough tests in the first three weeks of the season but Winona may be the toughest. Coach Ryan Keeton says it’s going to be a tough night for either teams defensive coordinators. Both Nanih Waiya and Winona have two high powered offenses this game has the potential to be a shoot out.

East Marion is down a class and everyone is anxious to see how they’ll compete in 1A. This game will be a great opportunity to see how the Eagles look up against one of the best in their new classification.

This game will have emotions running high. After Shaw lost to Simmons in the second round last season 6-0 there is a bit of a score to settle. On top of that a lot of players from both of these teams have been playing with or against each other since they were young kids so there is a rivalry aspect and it goes way back.

Last season Stringer finished just behind Resurrection for second place in Region 4. With East Marion added to the mix it will be an even closer race for the top spot. This matchup could have playoff implications.

TOP 5 TEAMS 1. JACKSON PREP (13-1 IN 2016) In MRA coach Herbert Davis words, “Until someone knocks them off, they have to stay at No. 1”. Prep has held a dominant hold over MAIS AAAA over the last five years and things don’t appear to be letting up at the Patriots camp. Prep returns all its star power, including stars junior running back Jerrion Ealy (971 rushing yards) and senior quarterback Chance Lovertich (1,926 passing yards). Expect the Jackson Prep championship train to keep rolling in 2017

2. MRA (9-4) The past three seasons MRA has made it to the championship game and fallen short to Jackson Prep. A lot of key pieces return for this team but with the question mark at quarterback, it’s hard to say if they’ll be back competing for a championship.

3. PCS (11-1)

PLAYERS TO WATCH

STORYLINES TO WATCH

JERRION EALY

Jackson Prep going for sixth straight championship

RB, Jackson Prep Ealy rushed for 971 yards last season and 16 touchdowns as a sophomore. He is already being discussed as a Dandy Dozen selection for 2018 and he holds nine Division I offers including Florida State and Auburn. Ealy is just getting started and in his junior season, you can expect him to explode.

LANGSTON ANDERSON WR, Jackson Academy Anderson had 765 receiving yards and six touchdowns last season as a sophomore. With quarterback Noah Thigpen back these two will be difficult to contain in 2017.

JT MCCELLAND RB, Lamar In his junior season, McCelland rushed for a team-high 1,258 yards and nine touchdowns. On top of that, he had 204 receiving yards and one touchdown. McCelland is a playmaker and in 2017 you’ll see the same production out of him on the field.

CHANCE LOVERTICH QB, Jackson Prep Lovertich is undoubtedly the best quarterback in MAIS entering 2017. As a junior, he passed for nearly 2,000 yards, 25 touchdowns, had a completion percentage of 65 percent and a QB rate of 143.4. Oh, he also didn’t throw a single interception. He and Ealy will prove difficult to contain in 2017.

LEE TANNER WR, MRA Tanner was a huge key to MRA’s success in 2016. In 2017 he will be the leader on the offensive side of the ball with two young quarterbacks coming in. It will be interesting to see what Tanner is able to accomplish with a new arm behind center.

ANNIE COSTABILE THE CLARION LEDGER

Jackson Prep could make Mississippi high school football history by winning its sixth-straight MAIS AAAA title. The only other team to win five straight championships was South Panola, which claimed the title from 2003-2007. Coach Ricky Black says they prepare for it by talking about it. Prep graduated a very small senior class and returns key skill players, most importantly quarterback Chance Lovertich and running back Jerrion Ealy. This team only lost one game last year. It’s hard to argue against a sixth championship coming home to Prep.

Weems + Pogue at Jackson Academy Larry Weems is in his second season as head coach of the Raiders program and in his first year, he flipped Jackson Academy from a 3-9 team to a 6-6 team. In year 2 expect even more improvement especially with the addition of another well-known coaching name in new defensive coordinator Lance Pogue. In 10 seasons with South Panola Pogue had a 126-17 record and brought five state championships to the program. On top of great coaching, JA lost very few players and returns all the right ones. Quarterback Noah Thigpen is coming off a junior season where he threw for 1,459 yards and nine touchdowns. Senior running back Webb Strickland had 502 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns as a junior. On defense Trent Tyre undoubtedly will lead the way after finishing 2016 with 80 total tackles, 24 TFLs and 10 sacks. With the coaching and the talent on the field, there’s no guessing what Jackson Academy could accomplish.

MRA without two key pieces from '16 MRA lost two very important pieces to its team success last season: starting quarterback Hunter Hulsey and 2016 Dandy Dozen Saahdiq Charles. Hulsey transferred to Clinton following the 2016 season; filling his spot will be junior Pierce Smith and sophomore Brock Morris (who coach Herbert Davis says have already made huge strides). Davis expects them both to need the first few games of

the season to continue to improve, but by district play has confidence they’ll be ready to go. On the offensive line, MRA returns four out of the five starters. Despite what Charles meant up front, Davis believes up front his team will be even better all around.

Lamar School looking to repeat Lamar is coming off its second Class AAAA-Division II championship in four years and is the favorites to win it again. Returning at quarterback is junior Joseph Hutchinson who threw for over 1,300 yards last season with a completion percentage of 57 percent. Along with Hutchinson, the Raiders have senior running back JT McCelland back who rushed for 1,258 yards and nine touchdowns. Linebacker JD Lee will be a leader for Lamar’s defensive unit; he finished his junior season second in tackles with 74 and first in TFLs with nine. Oak Forest Academy who was the AAAA-Division II runner up last year and in 2015 is moving up to Division I giving Lamar an even better shot at repeating.

Year of the MAIS quarterback MAIS is stacked with talented quarterbacks in 2017. Jackson Prep’s Chance Lovertich, Lamar’s Joseph Hutchinson and Jackson Academy’s Noah Thigpen are three of MAIS’ best. Lovertich threw for nearly 2,000 yards last season and has a completion percentage of 65 percent. Hutchinson is heading into his junior season and as a sophomore had 1,332 passing yards, seven touchdowns and a QB rating of 76.3. Thigpen led MAIS AAAADistrict 1 in passing yards as a junior with 1,459 and threw for nine touchdowns. Expect even bigger numbers from these three in 2017. MRA lost its starting quarterback in Hunter Hulsey but coach Herbert Davis has high expectations for the two young players stepping in, Pierce Smith and Brock Morris.

Presbyterian Christian dominated last season and in 2017 is returning a lot. They are losing a lot too though in quarterback Luke Hudson and running back Isaiah Woullard. The talk amongst coaches is that PCS will be back and just as tough to deal with as they were in 2016.

4. LAMAR HIGH SCHOOL (9-4) Lamar is the favorite to repeat in MAIS AAAA-Division II. The Raiders return all the right pieces in all the right places including quarterback Joseph Hutchinson and running back JT McClelland.

5. JACKSON ACADEMY (6-6) Larry Weems turned a 3-9 team into a 6-6 team and you can expect another year of improvement from this Raiders team in 2017. Added to the veteran coaching staff this offseason is defensive coordinator Lance Pogue. The coaching talent plus the player’s talent will be a successful combination for Jackson Academy in 2017. CHRIS TODD/FOR THE CLARION-LEDGER

Larry Weems (pictured), Ricky Woods, Gina Skelton, Ken Beesley and Herman Sanders comprise this year's MAC Hall of Fame class.

TOP 5 GAMES 1. Magnolia Heights at MRA, Aug. 18: The first game of the season brings Magnolia Heights out to MRA. This will be a good opportunity to see how junior Pierce Smith and sophomore Brock Morris will lead the Patriots offense as quarterback. Magnolia Heights went 0-4 in district play last season, getting the season started with it coming to MRA will be a good chance for both of these guys to get their feet wet.

2. Jackson Prep at Presbyterian Christian, Sept 22: Presbyterian Christian went undefeated during the regular season in 2016. One of its biggest wins was against Jackson Prep on the Patriots homecoming night, handing them their only loss of the season 28-16. Prep got its revenge knocking out PCS in the playoffs but there is still something to prove between these two schools.

3. Jackson Prep at Jackson Academy, Sept. 29: Arguably the biggest rivalry game in MAIS every year and this year will be no different. Jackson Academy fell to Prep last season 28-0 but in Weems' second year as the head coach, you can expect even more improvement. This game will have emotions high and a closer score than in recent years.

4. Oak Forest Academy at Presbyterian Christian, Sept. 29: Oak Forest Academy is moving up to MAIS AAAA-Division I this season and PCS is its first big opponent. The Yellowjackets lost to PCS last season 41-21 but PCS lost a lot of star power, most notably its starting quarterback Luke Hudson and running back Isaiah Woullard. This will be a good matchup to see how both teams have improved, or not from 2016.

5. Presbyterian Christian at MRA, Oct. 27: This game last season went to three overtimes before PCS eventually won 45-44. This season both teams will look slightly different with quarterback changes being made but you can expect the same competition on the field. PCS will look different without Hudson and Woullard making plays but it has young talent that is expected to produce to the same standard PCS has been putting out.

TOP 5 TEAMS NO. 1 INDIANOLA ACADEMY (14-0 IN 2016) The defending champs are No. 1 for a reason. Sure, the Colonels will miss standouts Sherman Timbs and Ben Van Cleve. But they still return 6-foot-3 wide receiver T.K. Bolden and quarterbacks Will Davis and Josh Hill. Running back Sebastian Harris will step up and play a key role for the offense as well. Fresh off its first state championship since 1976, Indianola Academy will also return standout linebacker Stefon Smith. Smith was Indianola’s leading tackler in 2016 and was the heart and leader of the defense. With talent on offense and the leader of its defense back, Indianola remains the team to beat in MAIS AAA.

NO. 2 ADAMS COUNTY CHRISTIAN (11-3)

BOB SMITH/BOB SMITH

Adams Christian’s Dykevis Ford carries against Indianola Academy during last year’s MAIS AAA Championship game at Jackson Academy on Nov. 17.

PLAYERS TO WATCH OWEN HARPER TE, Columbia Academy Much of Columbia Academy’s offense in 2016 focused on Wiley Cleland and wide receiver Luke McKenzie. But tight end Owen Harper had a quietly good year as well. The 6-foot-5, 240-pound senior finished with 520 receiving yards and five receiving touchdowns. But with McKenzie now gone, Harper could, and will likely, see those numbers double. Coach Randy Butler has said before that Harper will see a bigger role in the offense in 2017, which should move Harper into the MAIS AAA’s elite.

DONTAE GRAY ATH, Heritage Academy Several coaches in the MAIS AAA have Dontae Gray as one of their top players and for good reason. Gray spent time both as a running back and receiver with head coach Sean Harrison moving the dynamic playmaker all over the field. The result? A 1,1910 rushing yard performance. Gray also tacked on 24 rushing touchdowns, 546 receiving yards and eight receiving touchdowns.

STORYLINES TO WATCH Columbia Academy rebuilding

JACOB KEMP HATTIESBURG AMERICAN

Indianola could make third trip to MAIS AAA finals Indianola Academy hadn’t won a state title since 1976 and its best chance came a season before the Colonels actually nabbed the championship in 2016. The Colonels fell to Silliman in 2015 and made it their mission to make it back. They did so, drubbing Adams County Christian 42-7. But now the question remains, can they do it again? Core members like quarterback Will Davis, running back Sebastian Harris and wide receiver T.K. Bolden return. However, leaders like Sherman Timbs and Ben Van Cleve are gone. Can others step up in order to life Indianola to its third straight trip to Jackson?

Can Simpson bounce back? Simpson Academy is a known MAIS powerhouse. The Cougars have won five state championships since 2003, but in 2016 Simpson Academy only went 6-5. It was the first time since 2007 that the Cougars had failed to win at least eight games in a season. The Cougars have also gone three years without a state championship, their last coming in 2013. So can Simpson Academy return to prominence? Time will tell, but the Cougars do have a deep roster coming back. In 2016, Simpson Academy had 18 juniors, 16 sophomores and only nine seniors. By all accounts, the Cougars were young, but 2017 is the time for them to once again be feared by teams in the MAIS.

The Cougars were one of the surprise teams in AAA. Columbia Academy featured a dangerous quarterback-wide receiver combo in Wiley Cleland and Luke McKenzie. That combination led the Cougars to a 9-3 mark, the best season at Columbia Academy in more than a decade. But McKenzie and Cleland are now gone and second-year coach Randy Butler will have to find replacements quickly in order to build off the success the team had a season ago.

Will ACCS clear the championship hurdle? Adams County Christian, much like Indianola Academy, struggled to get over the championship hurdle. The Rebels have made it to the championship game two out of the last three years but have come out empty-handed in both trips. Could this be their year? The athletes are back, such as Julian WIlson and Dykevis Ford as well as quarterback Jacob McDaniel. It will be up to the talented group of seniors to lead the Rebels through their gauntlet of a regular season and into the playoffs for a chance at redemption.

Cathedral ready to return to championship form? The Green Wave took some lumps last season after winning 25 games the previous two seasons. Cathedral managed to win only three games in 2016, but still made a playoff appearance. Now with a returning roster of 16 upperclassmen, Cathedral will look to return to form and be more competitive in 2017.

BOB SMITH, BOB SMITH

Indianola Academy back Sebastian Harris (10) runs the ball against Adams Christian during last year’s MAIS AAA Championship game held at Jackson Academy in Jackson on Nov. 17.

STEFON SMITH LB, Indianola Academy There are good linebackers and sometimes there are even great linebackers in the MAIS. But sometimes there are special linebackers and Smith fits that mold. At 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, Smith has the prototypical size and speed for a linebacker. Smith, just a junior, will enter his second season at linebacker. According to several coaches, Smith is quite simply the best linebacker in AAA.

ANTONIO THOMPSON ATH, St. Aloysius Thompson was a true do-it-all player for the Flashes last season. Thompson torched defenses through the air for 1,003 yards and 11 touchdowns. He nearly topped that total on the ground, rushing for 923 yards and seven scores. Now the junior signal caller is a year older and is more comfortable with the offense. Thompson also has Jaylen Whitaker beside him in order to take some of the pressure off.

JULIAN WILSON RB, Adams County Christian Wilson was instrumental in leading the Rebels to the MAIS AAA championship game. The player his teammates call “Bug”, Wilson returns once again to the Rebel offense along with fellow running back Dykevis Ford. Despite his size, just 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds, Wilson runs like a bigger back normally would. But don’t let his running style fool you, he still remains one of the more electric players on the Rebels’ dynamic offense and could have a spectacular senior season.

It doesn’t seem fair to have the state runner-up above the champion, but the Rebels make a strong case to push their way to the top of the MAIS AAA standings. Two-way star Cade Wells is gone. Wells was one of the Rebels’ key cogs in the middle of their defense at linebacker. While the defense sustained heavy losses, the offense should be in good shape. Quarterback Jacob McDaniel returns as does senior athlete Dykevis Ford. Also returning is running back Julian Wilson. With two dangerous athletes in Ford and Wilson, and an older McDaniel to get them the ball, ACCS could make another run towards a berth in the MAIS AAA championship game.

NO. 3 HERITAGE ACADEMY (10-3) The Patriots steamrolled their way to a 10-2 record before they met eventual champion Indianola in the playoffs. It was the second time that Heritage Academy had lost to the Colonels. That loss has fueled Heritage Academy and there’s no reason to expect the Patriots to not go deep in the MAIS AAA playoffs once again. One of the most electrifying players in the entire MAIS returns in Dontae Gray. Gray torched defenses for 32 total touchdowns and could go for more. With Gray leading the way, Heritage will be a tough out for any team in AAA.

NO. 4 ST. ALOYSIUS (3-8) The Flashes faced a disappointing season in 2016, going 3-8 in a tough district. Despite not finishing above .500, the Flashes did make the playoffs, falling to Heritage 77-47. Before the playoff loss, St. Aloysius was coming off a three-game winning streak, which is why many coaches tabbed the Flashes as a team to be on the look out for. Another reason to be wary of the Flashes is the return of athlete Antonio Thompson. Thompson, just a sophomore last season, torched defenses for nearly 2,000 total yards of offense and 18 touchdowns.

NO. 5 STARKVILLE ACADEMY (6-4)

TOP 5 GAMES 1. Starkville Academy at Heritage Academy, Oct. 13

2. Columbia Academy at Simpson Academy, Sept. 29

3. Adams County Christian at Presbyterian Christian, Sept. 1

An early season meeting between two teams that should make the playoffs. Starkville returns a wealth of experience offensively and defensively. Heritage Academy also returns one of MAIS’ most explosive athletes in Dontae Gray. There could be a lot of points scored in this one.

A rivalry game for both schools that always has playoff implications. Columbia Academy bested Simpson Academy last season, but gone are standouts Wiley Cleland and Luke McKenzie. The Cougars return a deep roster of juniors and seniors and could be back on top of this district.

While this one might not have playoff implications like the others in this list, ACCS and PCS should be a dandy. PCS lost several key starters, including the all-time leading rusher in the state, Isaiah Woullard. This will be a good test for ACCS to find out if it can contend once again in MAIS AAA with a win over a team that was a win away from a berth in the MAIS AAAA-DI championship game.

4. Bayou Academy at Indianola Academy, Oct. 13 One of the few teams that kept pace with the Colonels last year, Bayou Academy should be able to keep things interesting against the defending MAIS AAA champs. Bayou had a disappointing season a year ago, but returns quarterback Cross Crowe as well as running backs Riley Smith and Spence Martin. Stanley Buford also returns. With all of its weapons back offensively, Bayou could pose a very serious threat to Indianola.

5. Centreville Academy at Silliman Institute, Oct. 6 Centreville will remain one of the top teams despite its move down to MAIS AA while Silliman will look for a bounce back year after winning it all in 2015. Silliman will also be looking for some revenge after falling to the Tigers twice in 2016, once in the regular season finale and then again in the first round of the playoffs.

The Volunteers, fresh off a successful campaign, will look to take the next step headed into 2017. Starkville Academy returns quarterback Noah Methvin. Methvin passed for 948 yards and eight touchdowns in 2016. The signal caller also rushed for 458 yards and six touchdowns in his junior season. The Volunteers also have their quarterback on defense back as well. Middle linebacker Willie Latham led the team with 128 tackles a year ago, which included a tackle for loss. With both of their leaders on offense and defense back, expect Starkville Academy to challenge once again in the MAIS AAA race.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

MAIS

2A-1A

TOP 5 TEAMS

1. ST. JOE-GREENVILLE (10-3)

BLAYKE DENDY ATH, Manchester Academy Dendy did a little bit of everything for Manchester last year. On offense, he led the team in rushing with 494 yards and eight touchdowns and caught 11 passes for 256 yards and three more scores. He led his team in tackles with 112 stops, and returned the only interception he pulled in for a touchdown. He was called on to throw three passes, and completed all three, one of them a 65-yard touchdown.

The Fighting Irish are suddenly a big fish in a small pond. After playing for a AAA state title last year, they have dropped into the AA Division and are primed for a big season. Quarterback Brice Johnson returns for his senior year after throwing for 2,304 yards and 24 touchdowns with just nine interceptions as a junior. He also led the Irish in rushing with 869 yards, averaging 7.9 yards a carry. He accounted for 40 touchdowns. Tailback Johnathan Jordan also returns after a 712-yard season and leading receiver Tre Adams is back. Joquez Sanders is a linebacker you can build a defense around.

GARRETT HARMON DB/RB, Tri-County Academy After a stellar junior season in which he set a school record with eight interceptions, Harmon is back to man his position at cornerback. He played his best in the big games too – he pulled down a pair of interceptions in the Rebels’ 21-7 loss to Canton Academy in the state championship. This year, he’ll double as Tri-County’s starting running back. If he can make the adjustment, David Blount’s run-happy offense should make him a force to reckon with in AA.

2. TRI-COUNTY ACADEMY (12-2) Tri-County probably could have hung in there against Canton Academy if they hadn’t suffered a couple of injuries on the offensive line and then the tragic death of starting guard Taylor Martin in a car crash. But the two injured linemen’s wounds have healed, and the team has emotionally recovered from the loss of Martin. Now they’ve set their sights on a return to the state championship. They’ll lean on sophomore quarterback Cade Shepherd, in whom coach David Blount said he has a lot of faith. They return fullback/linebackers Grayson Smith and Reed Cliburn. The Rebels have a tough road to get back to the title game, but it’s one they’re familiar with after finishing runner-up the past two seasons.

JOQUEZ SANDERS OLB, St. Joe-Greenville Perhaps no player had as big of an impact on their team’s defense as Joquez Sanders did last year for St. Joe. Sanders lined up at outside linebacker last year and recorded a team-high 130 tackles. He also finished the season with two sacks, two interceptions, blocked a punt and forced one fumble. At six feet tall and 235 pounds, he packs a punch.

CODY TINDALL RB/LB, River Oaks (La.) River Oaks struggled to a disappointing 3-7 record, but it wasn’t because they couldn’t find a tailback. Cody Tindall began to assert himself in the second game of the season, put up three 100-plus yard performances in a row and rolled to 889 rushing yards on 95 carries (a 9.4-yard average) with 11 touchdowns in his sophomore season. He doubles as a starting linebacker, and contributed 40 stops and a pair of interceptions as well.

THOMAS WARREN RB, West Memphis Christian (Ark.) The Black Knights finished last season 1-9, with their lone win coming over DeSoto all the way back in September. But if there was a bright spot for WMC, it was the emergence of tailback Thomas Warren. As the season went on, it became apparent that teams were going to have a hard time stopping the junior. He gained 252 yards on 39 carries in the first five games and then exploded for 792 on 58 in the final five games.

3. MANCHESTER ACADEMY (7-5)

CHRIS TODD / FOR THE CLARION LEDGER

Tri-County fans cheer for the Rebels in last year’s MAIS Class A-AA Championship on Nov. 17 at Jackson Academy.

STORYLINES TO WATCH TYLER CLEVELAND THE CLARION-LEDGER

Changing of the guard There are a couple of teams that have moved down into the AA Division that are going to play major roles in the state championship race. Both St. JoeGreenville and Manchester Academy are joining the ranks of MAIS AA. How big of a difference has there been between these two divisions? St. Joe played Canton Academy in the regular season finale last year, and beat the eventual AA state champs 46-0. Centreville Academy finished 9-3 in AAA last year, and it makes the move, too. Manchester should be more at home against AA competition, however. It played AA runner-up Tri-County pretty close last year (and eventually lost, 14-3), but had struggled against the better teams in AAA.

Good night and good luck While there are a couple of teams moving into the division, there’s several more moving out. The two most notable departures from MAIS A-AA are Canton Academy, which moved up to AAA, and Prentiss Christian, which moved down. These teams were big-time players in the division in most years and 2017 probably would have been no exception. Canton Academy is probably going to make some noise with all the players they have returning from their state championship team, and Prentiss Christian went 10-2 last year and hung 28 points on them in a playoff loss.

Magnum magnolia If you look at the history of A-AA, there was a time

when teams from Arkansas and Louisiana dominated the division. From 2004 to 2009, only two Mississippi teams participated in the championship game. But since then, it’s been a Magnolia State shutout. A Mississippi team has claimed the last eight championships, and the winner has beaten a Mississippi team in five of those years. Will 2017 be the year a team from out-of-state closes the gap? The closest out-of-state team to breaking through last year was Prairie View Academy in Bastrop, Louisiana. The Spartans went 8-2 but fell to Natchez’s Trinity Episcopal 32-26 in the second round of the playoffs.

Pitching shutouts On paper, St. Joe is set to be even better on defense than it was last year, and that’s saying something. The Irish were successful last season because they scored 531 points in 11 games, but the fact that they held opponents to just 120 points over that same stretch shouldn’t be overlooked. They shut out seven of the 11 teams they faced and held two others to single digits.

Getting over the hump Tri-County just can’t seem to get over the hump in the championship game recently. The Rebels are routinely in the championship picture, or at least they have been since 2001 under coach David Blount. They won it all in 2012, but have fallen short the last two seasons in the season finale. In 2015, it was Wilkinson County that played the spoiler with a fourth-quarter, 99-yard touchdown drive and a 2-point conversion that gave them an 8-7 win. Last year, it was Canton Academy.

One rival coach said 2017 is supposed to be Manchester’s year. The Mavericks return a slew of playmakers on offense and should be a contender after dropping down a class from AA. Quarterback Kinkead Dent returns having thrown for 1,367 yards and run for 345 more as a sophomore last year, and his top receiver Will Fouche will be a senior. But the big catalyst on offense is senior tailback Blayke Dendy. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound fullback averaged 7.5 yards a carry last year and scored 12 total touchdowns. He also doubles as the team’s top returning tackler at linebacker. Manchester returns eight of 11 starters on defense, including linebacker Warner Griffin and defensive end Taylor Porter.

4. CENTREVILLE ACADEMY (9-3 IN 2016) The Tigers are one of a handful of teams that have dropped from AAA to AA, and they were still very competitive in the higher division. They have experience, with 10 of the 30 players on the current roster in the senior class, including four offensive linemen. They have two capable quarterbacks in Tyler Thomassie and Brayson Boeta. Hunter Badeaux returns at defensive end to anchor the defense. He lines up next to B.J. Parent, who the Tigers will rely on to stuff the run again. Senior Stone Reynolds returns at running back/corner.

5. NEWTON COUNTY ACADEMY (7-4)

TOP 5 GAMES 1. Manchester Academy at Heritage Academy, Aug. 25

2. Canton Academy at Tri-County Academy, Sept. 15

3. Newton County Academy at Tri-County Academy, Sept. 22

Manchester coach Bryan Dendy has loaded down the front end of the Mavericks schedule with AAA heavyweights, starting with Canton Academy in week one and this matchup with Canton Academy in week two. It’s a solid measuring stick game, plus a shot for the Mavericks to pay Heritage back for a 44-14 defeat in the playoffs last year.

A rematch of the 2016 AA title game pits these bitter rivals against each other for the first time since Canton Academy stepped up to the AAA division. The Panthers outlasted the Rebels 21-7 last year at Jackson Academy in the championship last year, and you can bet Tri-County will try to get their revenge.

The third week in September is just as exciting as the second, as Newton County Academy gets its toughest test of the season with a trip to Flora to face Tri-County. The two teams played even for the most part last year, with three extra points proving to be the difference in Tri-County’s 28-25 win.

4. Tri-County Academy at St. Joe-Greenville, Oct. 13 The big boys of District 2 will lock horns in the second weekend in October, and the winner will have an inside track to win the league. St. Joe’s high-flying offense against Tri-County’s staunch defense – it could be the start of another excellent rivalry in District 4-AA.

5. St. Joe-Greenville at Manchester Academy, Oct. 20 The very next week, we’ll get to see another slugfest of MAIS AA heavyweights. Watching Manchester quarterback Blayke Dendy match wits with St. Joe linebacker Joquez Sanders is going to be worth the price of admission, and the winner very well might take home the region crown.

The Generals are always competitive, and they could be a dark horse in Class AA. The Generals’ only three regular season losses last season came to the state champs, the state runner-up and AAA foe East Rankin Academy. Newton County Academy lost quarterback Braden Smith to graduation, but returns the aptly named Sage Gun, who played sparingly last year. The offense should revolve around senior tailback Braxton Rose, who had 743 rushing yards on 160 carries with nine touchdowns last year. He and junior Lincoln Jordan (240 yards, 5 touchdowns) should provide a nice one-two punch.
