Welcome to the Fall/Winter 2018 edition of Patagonia Gear. Patagonia was founded on a reverence for tools built to perform and last—products that you could depend on for your life and that derive beauty from their absolute suitability to task. It began with a young California climber-turned-blacksmith hammering steel into slim, elegant pitons that he and his friends used to put up historical ascents. Today, we make clothes instead of climbing hardware, but our approach to creating anything remains as direct as an anvil strike—and more opposed to waste than ever. In this spirit, we’ll be publishing these guides less often, so we hope you’ll hold onto this one and refer to it to find exactly what you need.

JUST ONE MORE
Previous: Some 65 million years ago, plates in the earth collided and thrust upward, leaving behind the Chaltén Massif of Argentine Patagonia, where ferocious winds scour the landscape. The cloud plumes that stream from the massif’s highest summit, on the right, led the original inhabitants of the area, the Tehuelches, to believe it was a volcano. The peak was later named Fitz Roy, but the word chaltén means “smoking mountain.” Cerro Torre, the needle-like spire on the left, has long drawn the most obsessed alpinists, with a history as wild as the peak itself. Yvon Chouinard’s 1968 fun-hog expedition (see page 106), which made the first ascent of the California Route on Fitz Roy, gave birth to our company. Mikey Schaefer

Above tree line, the temperature drops so fast once the sun’s gone it feels like a different planet. When you’re diving into your parka, zipping up, cinching down the hood against wind and graupel, you’re not thinking about who decided where the pockets go, or where the insulation came from or any of the dozens of details that combine to make this jacket your shelter in this moment. None of that crosses your mind, nor should it. You just want the thing to work.

Today at Patagonia, we hammer out futuristic projects in the in-house advanced research and development center we call the Forge, named in tribute to the original ironsmith shop. Set on the main floor of our headquarters in Ventura, California, the Forge is a creative space focused first and foremost on solving problems. With a stable of machines that rivals and even surpasses many factories in depth if not in scale, the Forge offers a unique resource for design, materials and product development
CIRCLE, NOT BOX Ideas come from anywhere: mountains, oceans, rivers, but also cotton fields, recycling centers, classrooms, dinner tables and urban settings. They may come from athletes or employees or customers. In the end, all Patagonia products are created equal in the eyes of the Forge. An interesting problem unearthed by a lifestyle
It takes designers, engineers, technicians, production specialists, athletes and field testers, working closely together, to achieve the higher level of sophistication and understanding the Forge is designed to reach. Projects then cross-pollinate and inform each other. This allows solutions to carry, when appropriate and useful, into different styles and

The Grade VII Parka
Q U E S T I O N : W H AT D E TA I L S M AT T E R IN THE WORLD’S HARSHEST HIGH ALPINE ENVIRONMENTS, AND C AN W E B U I L D A B E L AY PA R K A T H AT ADDRESSES ALL OF THEM? The details and construction of the Grade VII Parka, our pinnacle high-alpine down parka, revolve tightly around the realities of brutal mountain environments, so we meticulously incorporated input from our most visionary alpinists, like Anne Gilbert Chase and Steve House. For example, keeping down insulation in place and lofted is critical to keeping a climber’s body warm. Advanced Research and Development Prototype Engineer Ming Kwan devised a painstaking but elegant solution. “I thought the best way was to make each down chamber like a shoebox, where the shoes inside it wouldn’t touch the shoes in the box next to it. Each chamber has four corners to seal in the down so it won’t swim into the next chamber and leave cold spots.” Other details include vertical hand pockets (so you can belay with your brake hand in a pocket); glovecompatible zipper pulls with a spring pull tab; and flapped pockets that keep snow out even if you forget to close them.

We spent more than five years developing the PSI (Personal Surf Inflation) Vest in the Forge. Supporting multiple rapid inflations and featuring a dump valve for quick deflation between waves, the PSI Vest is a pioneering tool for use in the heaviest, most hazardous surf—a tool that wouldn’t be possible without the specific knowledge and feedback of an array of engineers, technicians and big-wave surfers who have tested and proven the vest in critical situations. Ian Walsh is one. On a massive day at Pe’ahi, he took off late and caught an edge as he knifed into the face. “After a violent fall and a long time underwater,” he remembers, “I started thinking about the second wave of the set. I triggered the vest and surfaced with only seconds to spare before the next wave broke. After a quick exhale and deep inhale I was back underwater again, but with the vest inflated I was able to roll close to the surface like a buoy would, find a couple of extra breaths and then keep my head above water as the oxygen came back into my body.” Above: Check, double-check, triple-check: Andrew Reinhart and Walker Ferguson inspect a new set of PSI Vests in the Forge before approving their use. Solving for All-Weather Warmth QUESTION: DOWN MAY BE THE ULTIMATE INSUL ATOR FOR ITS WEIGHT, BUT IT FAILS ONCE IT GETS WET. CAN WE SOLVE THIS AGE-OLD PROBLEM BY USING A DOWNLIKE SYNTHETIC IN A PERFEC TLY CONSTRUC TED SILHOUET TE? PlumaFill is a revolution in insulation. A highly compressible synthetic that’s 40 percent warmer for its weight than other leading synthetic insulations, it’s a central fiber wrapped in finer filaments. While it mimics the structure of down, it stays lofted and warm even when it gets wet. “When it came to warmth for weight, it blew everything else out of the water,” says Material Developer Kristin Umscheid. Once tested and proven, this new “almost nothing” insulation required serious time in the Forge to devise a way to stabilize it. Settling on a discontinuous quilting technique that maximizes the

insulation’s loft while simultaneously locking it in place, we created the packable, superlightweight Micro Puff ® Jacket. Finally, we tested the new design out in the world, refining prototypes and tasking our athletes to do their worst to the early versions. Climber Josh Wharton, who was involved in testing prototypes early on, wrote: “This jacket is so tiny and weightless, you’d think it was down. It moves with you, keeps you warm, stays out of the way—without the usual fear of my jacket soaking through to a worthless lump.”

Cool- and Cold-Weather Running Colder temperatures are invigorating and tricky to dress for. Too much clothing and you’ll sweat. Not enough and you’ll never reach that sweet spot between warm and working. RULES OF THUMB
1) No pants until there’s frost on the ground. 2) Dress as if it’s 20 degrees warmer than it actually is. That’s the temperature you’ll be 10 minutes in, not the temperature you feel when you walk out the door. 3) Two layers on top, one on the bottom. Vary the level of insulation based on the temperature and how hot or cold you typically run.

What’s the Short Answer? A customizable system built for long rides. Long rides are hard enough without having to struggle with gear that’s overbuilt or underengineered. Simple, smart and rugged, our new Dirt Roamer Bike Shorts and Endless Ride Liner Shorts create a modular system for XL-sized days in the saddle. The Dirt Roamers are light and quick to dry, but tough enough to manage scratchy branches, rock scrape and mud. Their ultrasonic-welded seams combined with 4-way stretch fabric allow total range of motion. The nylon/spandex Endless Ride Liners have superbreathable mesh panels to keep you cool and a low-bulk, high-density 3-D Italian chamois to keep your critical parts collected. The Dirt Roamer/Endless Ride combo is subtle and clean, durable, repairable and Ironclad Guaranteed. Imported. Pay-Off Season It’s been a hot summer of dusty hardpack, but now it’s pay-off season. Get after it in a combo of pieces created for cooling temperatures, changing conditions and tackier trail. RULES OF THUMB
1) Always be ready to layer up or down. Assume that you’ll switch your top outer layers at least once a ride. 2) Chilled at the start? Avoid the temptation to overdress. Your first uphill will warm you right up. If ambient temperatures do get cold, deploy your hood or sneak a lowprofile beanie under your helmet. 3) An extra midlayer and some type of windproof shell should live permanently in your pack. Downhills are sweet, but not if you’re frozen to your bike.

Our field-testing team swears the R1 worn under a thin, wind-beating shell like the Houdini still makes one of the best breathable “soft shells” out there.
Men’s and Women’s Climbing Deserts are dry—hot in the sun and walk-in-freezer cold in the shade. You’ll oscillate between baking and shivering every time the sun slips behind the occasional lenticular, or any time of day that the sun isn’t hitting the rock. This means you need to think about your layers. RULES OF THUMB
1) A short-sleeved shirt or tank paired with a lightweight puffy or windresistant layer is a good system. It’ll be dry enough that you won’t sweat too much, so next-to-skin comfort is less of an issue. 2) Choose pants that hold up to abrasion and move easily.

For CurseWorthy Conditions The Triolet Jacket is built to withstand terrible weather (and terrible language) and now includes 100% recycled polyester. Born from tradition and infused with modernity, our Triolet Jacket maintains its mountain focus the way a hard shell should: through heavy snow, driving wind, pouring rain and a string of curse words. The 3-layer GORE-TEX fabric features a waterproof/breathable membrane bonded between a robust inner lining and a durable 100% recycled polyester face fabric; a DWR (durable water repellent) finish further fends off wet weather. The helmet-compatible, 2-way-adjustable hood with a laminated visor blends protection with optimal visibility; traditional cord locks in the hood and hem allow for quick adjustment; an interior stretch mesh catch-all pocket stashes gloves or a hat; two Napoleon chest pockets and two handwarmer pockets stay clear of harness and pack lines. Other detailing includes low-bulk, watertight, coated zippers on the pit zips and external pockets; low-profile cuff closures; full-reach gusseted underarm panels for mobility; and attaches to Patagonia Snow pants for lowerback coverage. Made with a 100% recycled polyester GORE-TEX face fabric. The Powder Bowl comes in a tough, storm-ready, 2-layer hard shell or insulated jacket—both built for robust waterproof/breathable and windproof protection. A DWR (durable water repellent) finish increases wet-weather protection by sloughing off saturated snow and icy rain, and the Insulated Powder Bowl utilizes 90% recycled insulation for extra warmth. The 100% recycled polyester GORE-TEX face fabric, made from postconsumer plastic bottles, reduces our reliance on petroleum to make new materials and diverts plastics from the waste stream. Streamlined this season, these jackets are durable yet built with ease of repair in mind. Imported.

The Comfort Zone If we dress kids right for the outdoors, they’ll stay outside longer and have more fun. That means considering outside temperature, age and exertion level to get kids in the comfort zone. Just like adults, layers help kids with temperature regulation. Here’s a sound strategy for older kids who are skiing or boarding.
RULES OF THUMB
1) Start with a next-to-skin baselayer that wicks and warms. 2) Add a midlayer or vest if it’s very cold (or your grom overheats on the slopes and ditches the jacket). 3) Insulated or noninsulated waterproof/ breathable jacket and pants complete the kit (the helmet will protect the noggin from the cold). 4) Don’t forget gloves, and stash a beanie in the jacket pocket for when the helmet comes off. After the fifth trip down the slope, they can drop a layer and cool down at will.

KIDS’ + BABY
Hard-Wearing Softies No clothes get worse treatment than kids’ clothes. That’s why ours are built like soft-hearted superheroes, tough as nails yet always ready to wrap even the smallest adventurers in warm, furry comfort. We’ve been making fleece garments for more than 40 years, so we’ve had time to make it better and, we think, much cuter. To make fleece better, we use recycled polyester in many of our styles for babies and kids, including our Baby Retro-X® Vest. Our Baby Retro Pile Jacket drafts off the 1970s original, but today’s pile fleece is certified as bluesign® approved, which means the fabric was made using best practices for efficient use of energy and water, among other things. Case in point for cuteness: the tiny animal ears on our Baby Furry Friends Hoody, which have led to requests for adult sizes (sorry, adults). Improvements (and adorability) aside, fleece remains warm, lightweight, breathable, soft and quick to dry—it’s no wonder it revolutionized the way we dress for the outdoors. We’re just glad that babies love it, too. Imported. Baby Retro-X® Vest $69.00 61035 I 6M-5T I Regular fit

WOMEN’S R1® YULE X ® FRONT-ZIP FULL SUIT
Natural Progression Our neoprene-free Yulex® wetsuits are now made in a Fair Trade Certified™ facility. Another unprecedented step for the surf industry. We started experimenting with Yulex® natural rubber in 2008. Four years later, we introduced our first Yulex wetsuits, and by 2016 we’d succeeded in making them completely neoprene-free— reducing CO2 emissions in the wetsuit manufacturing process by up to ~80%. Now, we continue the progression by adding more stretch, reducing the environmental impact of the dyeing and gluing processes, and introducing the world’s first Fair Trade Certified™ sewn full suits. For each suit made, we pay a premium directly to the people who made it; the certification also means the factory complies with Fair Trade USA’s standards for safe and healthy working conditions. Every decision we make. Our company mission statement—build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm, and use business to inspire and implement solutions to the environmental crisis— informs every decision we make in product development. And while our commitment to the natural world may not be the first thing you notice about our handsome Fjord Flannel Shirt, it’s there in our choice of materials, dyes and stitching. It also determines where and how the shirt is sewn, shipped and delivered to our stores— or directly to you. Over the years we’ve made great strides in our efforts to mitigate the impact of our products, especially in raw materials production—the many steps it takes to get from raw inputs to finished products, without sacrificing performance. In 1994, we made the decision to take a stand against chemically intensive cotton and switch to organically grown cotton throughout our line. As a result, we introduced a fully converted organic cotton line in 1996. Today, we’re looking at future innovations that will further change our raw materials process—from using energy and water more efficiently, and with fewer chemicals, to generating less waste and releasing less carbon emissions. We’re moving away from raw materials that originate from petroleum and moving toward using more recycled materials and raw materials that come from regenerative, bio-based sources like wool, hemp and cotton. And we’re working to improve social equity in our supply chain by investing in the development of more Fair Trade Certified™ factories.

Certified Organic Cotton Sixteen percent of the world’s insecticides and 7 percent of pesticides are used to grow conventional cotton. Our organic cotton garments are 100 percent insecticide- and pesticide-free. To ensure we are buying cotton that is organic as defined by the USDA’s National Organic Program, we require certificates issued by an accredited third-party certification body. Certificates are issued to farms that follow organic practices, to factories that process organic cotton separately from conventionally grown cotton, and for shipments of organic cotton between different companies in the supply chain. * Compared to a conventionally grown cotton shirt.

Plastic, Resurrected We began making recycled polyester from plastic soda bottles in 1993—the first outdoor clothing manufacturer to transform trash into fleece. It was a positive step toward a system that lessens our dependence on petroleum as a source of raw materials. Today, we recycle used soda bottles, unusable manufacturing waste and worn-out garments (including our own) into polyester fibers to produce clothing, like the Crestview Pants. It curbs discards, thereby prolonging landfill life and reducing toxic emissions from incinerators; and it helps to promote new recycling streams for polyester clothing that is no longer wearable.
MEN’S CRESTVIEW PANTS
Designed for braided trails, ridge traverses and the occasional scramble, our Crestview Pants are stretchy and weather-tough; they’re made from 6.2-oz 91% recycled polyester/9% spandex doubleweave fabric with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish that shuns mud and dew. The cleanly finished fly and waistband lay flat under a hipbelt; the gusseted crotch and articulated knees extend when you do; and the zippered hems slide on/off over boots. Two front hand pockets, two rear pockets and a side leg pocket—all with security zippers—store the day’s essentials.

The Long View on
Organic Cotton When we first began making cotton shirts, we figured cotton was a “pure” and “natural” fiber, made from a plant. As it happens, very little is pure or natural about cotton when it’s grown conventionally. In the early 1990s, 10 percent of all agricultural chemicals in the U.S. were used to produce cotton. And that cotton was grown on just 1 percent of all major agricultural land. Every year, conventional cotton crops in California alone were doused with 6.9 million pounds of chemicals. Research showed that these synthetic fertilizers, soil additives, defoliants and other substances wreak havoc on soil, water, air and many living things. So while we switched to organic cotton in 1996—and have never looked back— unfortunately, the cotton industry hasn’t changed much since. Today, only 1 percent of the cotton grown in the U.S. is organic. But our commitment has never wavered, and we hope other companies will join us in using materials like organic cotton. * Compared to conventionally grown cotton garments.

100
Inspired by the Blue Heart of Europe—a pristine network of waterways in the Balkans—we created this print that illuminates the importance of protecting intact ecosystems. The effects of damming a river are felt well beyond its banks, since every river is the heart of an entire ecosystem that thrives within its watershed.
The Blue Heart of Europe is at risk today, with more than 3,000 hydropower plants planned or already being built in the region. One of the area’s residents is the Balkan lynx. It’s estimated that there are less than 40 of these rare cats in existence. Building these proposed dams and encroaching on lynx habitat could mean the end of this elusive, endangered animal.

Solutions for a stubborn fiber problem Like polyester, nylon fiber is made from petroleum; incorporating as much recycled nylon as we can lessens our dependence on petroleum as a raw material source. For some reason locked deep in polymer chemistry, nylon is more difficult to recycle than polyester. After years of research, development and testing, we’re finally finding some recycled nylon fibers that are suitable for apparel and can pass our rigorous tests of manufacturability and product quality. Some of the recycled nylon we use comes from postindustrial waste fiber, yarn collected from a spinning factory, and waste from the weaving mills that can be processed into reusable nylon fiber. Another recycled nylon fiber we are experimenting with is recreated from discarded industrial fishing nets. * Compared to nonrecycled nylon garments.

Building a Recycled Down Market Integrating 100% Recycled Down (duck and goose down reclaimed from down products) into our supply chain took a bit of legwork. Both the collector and the processor we partner with are family-owned businesses that share our values for high quality and uncompromising performance. Our demand for recycled down has already led to an increase in supply. As other apparel companies follow our lead, we expect their demand will boost down recycling in even more countries. By plucking down from the trash, we reduce discards, help expand and add value to the recycling stream, and more fully realize our goal of using more regenerative and nonpetroleum-based materials.

JUST ONE MORE
See Mountain of Storms To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the journey that gave our company its name, we’ll be screening Mountain of Storms, a 16mm documentary made about the trip, in several of our stores starting October 2 at Patagonia Ventura. The movie features the original fun hogs Doug Tompkins (left), Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard (center, feet up, naturally) and Dick Dorworth. It captures, in all its grainy, vintage glory, the good times and mishaps they had along the way—plus something greater, too: the seed of a lifelong dedication to saving the wild places they found.
Fitz Roy near Paso Superior, early November 1968: The fun hogs finally enjoy some sun outside the ice cave they’d dug. Enthusiasm was running high as they had already pioneered the route across the Piedras Blancas glacier to the base of Fitz Roy, and the weather looked reasonable—for the moment. Patagonia.
