Higher Ground The High Alpine Kit
Above tree line, the balance between going light and going too light becomes as delicate as traversing verglased granite. We asked our alpine climbers (an opinionated bunch) to imagine, build and test pieces of clothing that they could use individually or as components of a system for climbing in high alpine zones. They had healthy, sometimes passionate arguments on plenty of details, but never on the essence of what they all wanted the new High Alpine Kit to be: a tightly integrated layering system— from baselayer to belay parka—for moving efficiently through the earth’s least forgiving environments.

A few Grade VII design considerations up close: 1 Vertical internal draft tubes along center-front zipper lock out drafts; the inner lining is elasticized to keep a warm, draft-free environment next to the body, while maintaining full loft in the down chambers.
4 Baffles on shoulders, arms, and front of parka are internally taped to eliminate the need for exterior stitching. This greatly improves the shell's wind and water resistance and keeps the down insulation dry.
2 Four ample internal drop-in pockets offer easy access and quick storage; they’re placed high enough to handle heavier items like water bottles.
5 Insulation comes all the way down to the elasticized cuff opening, unlike a Velcro® cuff, where the closure trims off 1½

New Hybrid Sleeping Bag An “elephant’s foot” bag built to integrate with a belay parka Efficiency reigns in high alpine zones, where eliminating redundancies can shave weight and free up critical space in your pack—a fact that inspired Patagonia’s new Hybrid Sleeping Bag. From toes to torso, it’s insulated with lofty 850-fillpower Traceable Down encased in an ultralightweight Pertex Quantum® shell fabric. The bag continues above with a single layer of whisper-light, windproof Houdini fabric to create a heattrapping cocoon when paired with a belay parka. This unique “sealed” design bridges any gaps between your sleep system’s top and bottom halves, better manages tossing and turning, and adds a layer of weather protection for when your bivy goes from 10
benign to brutal. The center-front half-zip (with 2-way sliders) saves weight and, when open, frees your hands for brewing up or sorting gear. Drawcords atop the insulated portion and at the hood seal out drafts and lock in heat. At an incredible 18 oz (with stuffsack), the Hybrid Sleeping Bag pares down your load so you can go as fast and light as you need. Imported. The Hybrid Sleeping Bag up close: 1 Integrated System Built to pair with whatever jacket or parka you’re already carrying, the Hybrid Sleeping Bag features Houdini fabric in the upper section that transitions to a down-insulated lower section and seals any gap in-between, keeping your system integrated even when you roll over in your sleep. The Houdini fabric upper also staves off wind and light precip, and can be cinched at the hood to form a warm seal.
2 Superpackability The Hybrid Sleeping Bag’s “halfand-half” construction makes it remarkably small and light (just 18 oz) when compressed into its stuffsack, leaving more pack space for other essentials.
3 Foot Box The foot box features fully baffled, differentially cut construction (no sewn-through spots) to ensure maximum warmth in the foot area—a place infamously susceptible to cold.

Men’s and Women’s Down Insulation
Down Insulation Lightweight, compressible and resilient, down provides deep “at-rest” warmth in cold, dry conditions
WHY DOWN I N S U L AT I O N? Down is nature’s undisputed insulating hero. Warmer, lighter and more compressible for its weight than any other insulating fiber, down remains the choice for deep warmth in the world’s coldest environments. From bivy parkas to sleeping bags, down, if properly cared for, can last for decades. When wet, down can lose its loft and insulating power, but in dry climes, down is warmth’s heavyweight.

The Fight Continues In October 2015, Patagonia teamed up with Sweetgrass Productions and British Columbia conservation group Wildsight to deliver the Jumbo Wild story to the big screen. For nearly 25 years, local people–First Nations, conservationists, backcountry skiers and snowboarders–have fought a large-scale ski resort in the Jumbo Valley, a place that is sacred to the Ktunaxa people and a critical Grizzly bear corridor. The full-length film has since been viewed by thousands of people and has activated a new generation of activists in the snow industry. As a result of the international attention garnered by the film, a petition of over 50,000 signatures has been collected and will be delivered to the B.C. legislature calling for the permanent protection of Jumbo. In light of recent failed attempts by developers and the increased international pressure against developing the Jumbo Valley, Wildsight, the Ktunaxa First Nation, and other partners see a window of opportunity to secure permanent protection for the Jumbo Valley. Become a part of The New Localism. Visit patagonia.com/JumboWild.
