As the best orchestra in America, and one of the greatest in the world, The Cleveland Orchestra is recognized not just for our own work, but for the passionate and caring hometown community where we live. As we approach the Orchestra’s Centennial in 2018, we are truly proud to be Cleveland’s ambassadors to the world. There is no greater joy for me than collaborating with the wonderful group of artists onstage. With the confidence and support of the community we serve, the members of The Cleveland Orchestra and I are able to challenge each other to ever greater heights of excellence and achievement in our art with each passing season. Maintaining and enhancing excellence and staying relevant in a changing society requires constant and focused effort. I am grateful to all those dedicated to this pursuit — my colleagues in the Orchestra and Chorus, our trustees and volunteers, our audiences and supporters, and our management and staff team. This year, in particular, I extend a special note of gratitude and farewell to Gary Hanson, who retires as Executive Director and with whom I have enjoyed a great working partnership for more than a decade. He has pursued his work here with incredible energy and intelligence, and has helped this Orchestra prepare for an even greater future. I am excited to welcome André Gremillet as our new Executive Director. Combining the long-term partnership that the musicians and I have already developed with the extraordinary support and commitment of the Board of Trustees and the people of Northeast Ohio, coupled with André’s leadership and new perspectives, I have every confidence that innovation and growth will continue as we look to our Centennial in 2018 and build into the Orchestra’s second century.

Strengthening Northeast Ohio Through Excellence Onstage and in the Community

E A C H Y E A R , The Cleveland Orchestra seeks to grow stronger. By many measures, 2014-15 was marked by great achievement and continuing evolution, artistically and financially.

We have much to be proud of. We have much to be thankful for. We are playing more music for more people, with more support from more patrons than ever before: For a fourth year in a row, with the tremendous support of the Northeast Ohio community, we achieved a balanced budget. The past year saw record ticket revenue, earned not from higher ticket prices but through sales of more tickets to an expanding number of households. The year also achieved record donated revenue, given by thousands of generous supporters committed to our success. Annual support, in particular, continues to grow — both in total donated and total number of donors — and is on target to achieve even more. In November 2015, the passage of Cuyahoga County Issue 8 ensured public funding for cultural organizations for another ten years — and again demonstrated this region’s strong support for the arts as an important contributor to the quality of life here. And, just as this annual report is going to print, we reached a new three-year agreement with the musicians of the Orchestra. The agreement ensures stability and continuity at the heart of everything we do. With the expanding generosity and wholehearted support of the people of Northeast Ohio, The Cleveland Orchestra has never been better equipped to serve its hometown region. We are touching more lives than ever before. We are strengthening the quality of life for all who call Northeast Ohio home. At the same time, as we approach our Centennial, we

Under the leadership of Franz Welser-Möst, our musicians continue to reach new heights of musical excellence. And their collective artistry receives praise locally, nationally, and around the world. As our brand and our standard, musical excellence infuses everything we do. Our community of donors and concertgoers, in turn, demands excellence from The Cleveland Orchestra, driving our board, musicians, and staff to settle for nothing less than the best — onstage and off. In everything, the Orchestra continues to harness the power of music to expand audiences and more fully connect with the community we all call home. Each year, the Orchestra reaches tens of thousands of community residents through music education programs and community presentations and partnerships. New community engagement initiatives, such as our “At Home” neighborhood residency program, join together with long-held traditions of free public concerts for the community. We serve more than 60,000 students each year through education programs — in schools and at Severance Hall. Through excellence in innovation and tradition alike, the Orchestra equally serves the art of music and the community. In just four years, we have doubled the number of young people attending Cleveland Orchestra concerts, with over 40,000 concertgoers age 25 and under attending each year. The strong presence of young people at our concerts is now the norm for our Orchestra, and continues to fuel the institution’s upward trajectory and longterm sustainability. Sound for the Centennial Campaign Builds Toward the Future

However, recent strong successes are tempered by ongoing longterm financial challenges. We are addressing many of these challenges through the Sound for the Centennial Campaign, to build from our currrent stability to a new level of strength and resilience for the institution’s finances. The ultimate success of the Centennial Campaign rests on four components: an increased Endowment, growing Annual Support, a pipeline of Legacy Giving commitments, and the evolution of Special Fundraising (from a necessity, to fill the budget gap as the Endowment grows, to become sustainable giving in

support of key artistic and community initiatives). As we prepare to announce the Centennial Campaign’s final phases, our most critical goal is substantial ongoing growth of the Orchestra’s Endowment. Today, the Endowment stands at $182 million — up from a low of $97 million following the financial crisis in 2008. Further expanding the Endowment will ease the pressure on overall fundraising each year while also providing new opportunities for the institution’s continued growth and service for our community. Achieving the kind of financial strength and resilience we envision is a formidable challenge. But the overall fundraising success of the past several years proves both that a strong future is possible and that Northeast Ohio is passionate about everything the Orchestra does to strengthen this community. The Annual Fund continues to break records, with donors contributing more than $11.1 million in support of the Orchestra’s operations in 2014-15. Through the tremendous generosity of thousands who love this institution, annual support increased by more than $1 million in just two years. This past year, the Annual Fund contributed more than 20% to the Orchestra’s bottom line. Thank you. As the Orchestra builds to its second century of serving the Northeast Ohio community, a robust and growing Annual Fund will remain crucial. All of the components of the Campaign are underway and seeing steady progress. Achieving all of the Campaign’s goals will require the committed participation of the entire Northeast Ohio community. Hundreds of dedicated leaders throughout Cleveland have already made a Centennial Campaign gift. Through their generosity, we are more than half-way to the overall Campaign goal, including $73 million in cash and pledges to the endowment. More than 250 forward-looking donors have made Legacy commitments — ensuring that the Endowment continues to grow long into the future. And, as the Endowment grows, our corporate and foundation supporters are providing targeted operating support to ensure the Campaign’s success. Ultimately, the Campaign will set the Orchestra on a path toward true financial strength. Each segment will move forward even more aggressively, as we publicly announce the details of the Campaign’s final phases in 2016. As we do so, I want to extend my special gratitude to Dick Bogomolny, Chair of Campaign Fundraising, and to Nancy McCann, Vice Chair of Campaign Fundraising, who, together with the Campaign’s Leadership Cabinet, are working tirelessly toward the Campaign’s full success. That the Orchestra has achieved repeated and measurable success in so many areas is due to extraor-

dinary support, leadership, and generosity from the entire Cleveland Orchestra family. We owe a special debt of gratitude to the Northeast Ohio community. You continue to inspire us and propel us forward. Launching the Orchestra’s Second Century

Just over a year ago, Franz Welser-Möst and the Orchestra announced the extension of his contract as music director through 2022. Franz’s longterm commitment provides artistic stability for the Orchestra through and beyond the Centennial season, and is central to fulfilling our expanding education and community engagement mission. The passage of time naturally brings changes and transformation to every institution. This year, we bid farewell to Gary Hanson, our tireless and devoted staff leader. Gary has served the Orchestra with distinction for nearly three decades. His twelve years as Executive Director have been marked by hard work, keen thought, and great achievement. He has helped set the Orchestra’s course for a new century. As we say goodbye to Gary, we welcome our new executive director, André Gremillet, to the Orchestra family. André has an impressive artistic background and corporate leadership experience, and has successfully enhanced the fiscal health of two symphony orchestras. I have no doubt that André will extend The Cleveland Orchestra’s strong record of achievement into the future. (You can read more about him on page 7 of this report.) With musical excellence as our guidepost, and the Northeast Ohio community as our inspiration and champion, success has become our established norm. Yet we cannot ignore the magnitude of the challenges that face us. The road ahead is not easy. To set the Orchestra on a foundation of strength for its second century requires great effort from all who love this institution. Let us muster our collective energy for a new tremendous leap forward. To continue building new audiences for the future. To continue commanding strong attendance for our concerts at home and abroad. To carry the Sound for the Centennial Campaign to fruition. To cross the border from stable to secure — and never look back.

Cleveland Orchestra concerts here in Northeast Ohio. With this sustained effort to attract young audiences — to create the youngest audience of any orchestra — we are proving the vitality and viability of symphonic music for future generations.

T O M Y C O L L E A G U E S and friends at The Cleveland Orchestra and throughout the community:

I write this letter during the final weeks of my tenure, leading to my retirement at the beginning of 2016. It will add up to 28 years since I first occupied an office in Severance Hall, and 12 years working as the Orchestra’s Executive Director alongside Music Director Franz Welser-Möst. Serving this wonderful institution has been a great privilege for which I am grateful to many people — too many, in fact, to begin to name here. But I’ve been fortunate over the years in the pages of a dozen Annual Reports to name with appreciation many of you who have done so much to make this time of my life and career so rewarding. W I T H Y O U R S U P P O R T , the institution has accom-

plished much over the past year and over the past decade. First, and foremost, the Orchestra itself has advanced to the pinnacle of artistic greatness. The thousands of you who attend Cleveland Orchestra concerts know from your own experience how great this Orchestra is. Hearing them play at Severance Hall and at Blossom Music Center, we experience their quality and versatility each year. It is nevertheless extraordinarily satisfying to know that, around the world, The Cleveland Orchestra is just as beloved as it is here at home. The name Cleveland, globally, stands for excellence. In recent years, students and young people have become some of our most ardent fans. Through programs funded by the Orchestra’s Center for Future Audiences, we have exponentially increased the number of young people attending

Through innovation and planning, we are today playing for more people and connecting more deeply with the community we serve. We have added new series and new concerts and we have expanded our community presence, especially through collaborations and partnerships, and in doing so connecting The Cleveland Orchestra with our fellow citizens in the neighborhoods where they live. We have weathered the challenging financial storms of the past decade, with your support and the great leadership of our dedicated Board of Trustees. Our Sound for the Centennial Campaign has achieved significant success in its initial years, and the final phases of this Campaign are set to bring together support from all constituencies. I have every confidence that The Cleveland Orchestra’s financial strength and stability will grow with and beyond the Campaign’s success. A N N O U N C I N G my retirement a year ago has given

me plenty of time to reflect on what I’ll miss about this compelling and all-consuming role. (Happily, however, my wife Barbara and I will continue to live in Cleveland, and we can count ourselves lucky that we won’t have to miss regularly attending Cleveland Orchestra concerts.) Most of all, I’ve concluded, I will miss greatly the daily pleasure of being part of an extraordinary team that is passionately devoted to the day-to-day management of the institution. Largely unseen, and only occasionally acknowledged by name outside of the Annual Report, the staff of The Cleveland Orchestra, Severance Hall, Blossom, and Cleveland Orchestra Miami are every bit as devoted to their work as are the fabulous and hard-working musicians of the Orchestra onstage. And so when we earn your applause at the end of each wonderful concert, I hope you will consider adding a “bravo” or two for those behind the scenes whose work is to provide an environment in which great musicians can create memorable perform-

ances. Being a part of this team for so many years has been an irreplaceable pleasure and honor. The attention and accolades accompanying the institution’s recent innovations and achievements are a direct result of the great work of my staff colleagues. The level of service synonymous with Severance Hall, Blossom, and Miami is a result of our staff caring so deeply about our patrons and concertgoers. And the worldwide pre-eminence of our Orchestra owes much to our group of dedicated operations and communications professionals. It seems that the rest of the Orchestra industry recognizes the strength of the managers who work in Cleveland. Today, almost half of the top twenty American ensembles have tapped Cleveland Orchestra staff and alumni to fill their chief-executive and senior management ranks. It’s a record no other orchestra can currently match. I N J A N U A R Y, André Gremillet will succeed me as Executive Director, coming to us from his successful tenure as the chief executive of the Melbourne Symphony in Austrailia. I have had the great pleasure of working one-on-one in recent weeks with André as we transition, and I am delighted to be turning over the reins to him along with my spot on the roster of this peerless team.

The privilege of working for The Cleveland Orchestra has by extension provided me with the chance to serve our great community. And that, like being an Orchestra subscriber and donor, is something that I am grateful to be able to continue well into the future. Cleveland has become and will remain Barbara’s and my beloved home and I am excited by the prospect of finding new ways to serve the city and its institutions.

André Gremillet will succeed Gary Hanson as executive director of The Cleveland Orchestra at the beginning of January 2016. Most recently Mr. Gremillet served as managing director of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Australia. “The Cleveland Orchestra represents the brightest example of what a great orchestra should be in the 21st century,” says André Gremillet. “It is truly an honor to be appointed as your next executive director. I look forward to working with the superb artists that are Franz Welser-Möst and the musicians of The Cleveland Orchestra, as well as with a Board and staff who are leaders in the orchestra world, to extend the Orchestra’s achievement in musical excellence, commitment to community, and financial strength.” André Gremillet was managing director of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra from 2012 to this autumn. During his tenure, the MSO deepened its engagement with the Melbourne community, resulting in a significant increase in ticket sales and fundraising, and completed an extraordinarily successful European Tour. From 2007 to 2012, Gremillet was president and CEO of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra (NJSO), where his tenure marked a financial turnaround for the organization. Prior to joining the NJSO, Gremillet served for four years as president of the internationally-renowned pipe organ building company Casavant Frères in Québec, Canada. He is a conservatorytrained pianist, holding a master’s degree from the Mannes College of Music and an MBA from McGill University.

Pianist Lang Lang was the guest soloist for The Cleveland Orchestra Gala in October 2014, with a capacity audience and dinner raising funds toward the institution’s many education and community programs. Also in October 2014, former Cleveland Orchestra President James D. Ireland III was given the Orchestra’s Distinguished Service Award, presented onstage by current President Dennis W. LaBarre. For the Orchestra’s 25th free downtown concert, the “2015 Star-Spangled Spectacular” was performed on Mall B while its homebase at Public Square was undergoing a major renovation.

Franz Welser-Möst’s thirteenth season as music director began with a focus on works by Bach in the autumn and concluded with a staged presentation of Richard Strauss’s rarely-performed opera Daphne at Severance Hall in May. The latter coincided with hosting the annual national conference of the League of American Orchestras for the first time in Cleveland, at which 1,000 staff members and musicians from orchestras across North America met to share and exchange ideas and solutions, and to learn firsthand of Cleveland’s successes. In between, in January a concert to honor Pierre Boulez’s 90th birthday and his long association with The Cleveland Orchestra was conducted by WelserMöst and featured video segments of Orchestra musicians reflecting on their work with Boulez across five decades. In February Welser-Möst and the Orchestra completed their Brahms recording project with an all-Brahms weekend featuring celebrated pianist Yefim Bronfman in both piano concertos. The resulting Brahms DVD box set features all four symphonies, the piano and violin concertos, and additional orchestral works, and has just been released by Clasart as this annual report goes to print; the performances were recorded between January 2014 and February 2015 at Severance Hall, London’s Royal Albert Hall, and Vienna’s Musikverein. From September 2014 to the first weekend of September 2015, the Orchestra performed 101 concerts at Severance Hall. These performances included 65 regular subscription concerts, plus the annual Holiday Festival in December, three At the Movies presentations, the Summers@Severance series, and Family Concert series, plus weekday Education Concerts. The Orchestra’s annual Gala benefit evening took place on October 11, 2014, featuring pianist Lang Lang performing with the Orchestra and raising funds in support of the institution’s education and community programs. In addition, the San Francisco Symphony was presented for a single performance in November 2014 as part of The Cleveland Orchestra’s subscription series, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra was presented in a Severance Hall concert in August. A special memorial concert was performed in April to honor James D. Ireland III, former president of the Musical

Arts Association, who had died in January at the age of 65. All together, these Severance Hall concerts drew in just over 163,500 total admissions. The season also featured seven soldout performances of Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker in December, presented by the Orchestra in collaboration with Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet in a fully-staged production at the State Theatre at PlayhouseSquare, drawing in total admissions of 18,750. Overall, attendance rose for the 2014-15 season and ticket revenue increased to a new record, achieved not through higher ticket prices but through sales of more tickets to an expanding number of people and households from across the region.

Community and Education The Orchestra’s ongoing achievements in serving the people of Northeast Ohio and engaging people of all ages in the Orchestra’s activites featured an expanding variety of education and community presentations in 2014-15. Free community concerts included a performance of Bach’s Missa Brevis at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist conducted by Franz Welser-Möst in October, the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Concert in January, and the Orchestra’s 26th annual Star-Spangled Spectacular, which was held on Mall B in Downtown Cleveland while the regular venue — Public Square — was undergoing renovation. The Orchestra’s “At Home” neighborhood residency continued to connect with residents in new ways, evolving in 2015 to take place over an extended timeframe throughout the spring in Broadway Slavic Village. Musicians from the Orchestra and its youth ensembles participated in 33 free performances, education presentations, and community service activities. The centerpiece of the residency was a soldout free public concert by The Cleveland Orchestra at Our Lady of Lourdes Church on April 10, which was recorded by ideastream/WVIZ and televised the following week. The Orchestra’s core education programs once again served tens of thousands, including school fieldtrip Education Concerts for over 14,800 students at Severance Hall, two inschool Orchestra performances (at St. Joseph Academy and Mound Elemen-

2 014 - 2 01 5 tary School), four masterclasses led by guest artists, and literally hundreds of presentations linking music and learning in local partner schools. Ongoing programs also included the Orchestra’s youth ensembles, Family Concert series, and adult learning sessions. The Orchestra’s premier youth ensemble, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, journeyed to China for the ensemble’s second international concert tour. The four-city tour in June 2015 featured performances in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, and Ningbo.

Building New Audiences The Orchestra’s ongoing initiative to build the youngest audience of any orchestra continued to inspire and attract youth from across Northeast Ohio — and attention from other orchestras across the country. For the third consecutive year, over 40,000 young people age 25 and under utilized program offerings to attend Cleveland Orchestra concerts. An array of coordinated, interlocking programs funded through the Orchestra’s Center for Future Audiences make attending concerts affordable and accessible — with more than 21,000 young people attending Blossom performances through the Under 18s Free offering for families, and over 23,000 young people attending concerts at Severance Hall through discounted student prices and programs or Under 18s Free. The Circle, the Orchestra’s young professionals organization, expanded, in its second year, to over 200 members.

Touring and Residencies Each year, the Orchestra apportions several weeks of its performance schedule to residencies and touring activities beyond Northeast Ohio. These enhance both the artistic and financial strength of the organization overall, and extend and enhance the Orchestra’s worldwide reputation for excellence. Following up on the European Tour in September 2014 discussed in last year’s report, Franz Welser-Möst led The Cleveland Orchestra on its 2015 European Tour and Vienna Residency in October 2015. This was their fifteenth international tour together and included performances in Brussels, Cologne, Luxembourg, Dortmund, Milan, Munich, Paris (with the ensemble’s debut performance at the new Philharmonie de Paris), and Regensburg, and ended with four performances during a weeklong residency at Vienna’s Musikverein. Concerts featured demanding

and eclectic scores by Mahler, Richard Strauss, Messiaen, and Verdi. The Cleveland Orchestra returned to Miami for its ninth season of concerts, presented under the name Cleveland Orchestra Miami in collaboration with the Miami Music Association. The season’s subscription concerts, presented in partnership with Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County, drew over 14,800 in paid admissions across four weekends, led by Franz WelserMöst and by Miami principal guest conductor Giancarlo Guerrero. As part of each Cleveland Orchestra Miami season, the Orchestra presents a variety of community and education programs. Free Education Concerts for Miami-Dade County public school students, Musical Rainbow concerts for young children, and various after-school programs, mentoring sessions, and masterclasses for college students served just over 7,000 students in 2014-15. In 2015, the Miami residency’s community offerings also included Cleveland Orchestra Miami “Connects” with South Miami-Dade, an initiative to engage with communities surrounding the county’s performing arts center in Cutler Bay. Over 1,000 residents took part in this community partnership, which featured two Musical Rainbows at elementary schools, coaching sessions by Cleveland Orchestra musicians at Coral Reef Senior High School, and an intimate performance and Q&A event for senior citizens at the South MiamiDade Cultural Arts Center. The initiative culminated with a sold-out free community concert on March 4, 2015. The Cleveland Orchestra’s residency schedule during the 2014-15 season also featured masterclasses, coaching, and working rehearsals for students of Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, with the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music, and a side-byside performance with the Kent/Blossom Chamber Orchestra in August (as part of The Cleveland Orchestra’s annual summer residency in Northeast Ohio at Blossom Music Center). The Cleveland Orchestra’s concert activities away from home also included a week-long residency as part of the 2015 Lincoln Center Festival in July 2015. Four concerts at Avery Fisher Hall (now Geffen Hall) in New York City featured two in-concert performances of Strauss’s Daphne and two concerts of works by Messiaen, Dvořák, Beethoven,

and Strauss.

Severance Hall Rentals Beyond the Orchestra’s own concerts and presentations, there were 110 rental events and performances at Severance Hall in 2014-15, hosting just over 63,000 attendees.

Blossom 2015 The Orchestra’s 2015 Blossom Music Festival featured 17 concerts across ten weekends in July, August, and September, including 15 by The Cleveland Orchestra. The Festival began with two Cleveland Orchestra concerts and a Blossom Festival Band concert, followed by the offical Opening Night concert featuring Franz Welser-Möst leading a performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The summer ended nine weeks later with over 25,000 people attending in a single weekend for a program of music by John Williams for Labor Day Weekend. For a second consecutive summer, the Festival broke records for per-concert attendance, with an average of more than 7,500 admissions for each performance and total admissions of nearly 128,000. The season also achieved a new record in ticket revenue based, like the success at Severance Hall, not through higher ticket prices but by expanding sales to more people from more households. The summer also featured 21 nonFestival concert performances and 6 other events hosted by LiveNation, which operates Blossom Music Center for the Musical Arts Association. Attendance at the concerts totaled 304,000, with an average of almost 14,500 per concert.

Orchestra Personnel During the 2014-15 year, Franz Welser-Möst appointed four new members to The Cleveland Orchestra. They joined the ensemble as the year progressed: Gareth Thomas (bassoon) and Analisé Denise Kukelhan (violin) in January 2015, Corbin Stair (oboe) in May 2015, and Thomas Sherwood (percussion) in September 2015. Additionally, Franklin Cohen (principal clarinet) retired at the end of the Blossom season, after nearly 40 years of service.

In May 2015, Franz Welser-Möst led The Cleveland Orchestra in staged performances of Richard Strauss’s rarely-performed opera Daphne at Severance Hall. They repeated the work with in-concert performances in New York City in July 2015 as part of the summer’s Lincoln Center Festival, bringing renewed acclaim of Cleveland as the best orchestra in America. Franz Welser-Möst led the Orchestra and Blossom Festival Chorus in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony on the official Opening Night of the 2015 Blossom Festival for a crowd of almost 9,000 from across Northeast Ohio and beyond. The season’s “At Home” neighborhood residency took place throughout the spring in Cleveland’s Broadway Slavic Village, with events and performances, presented in collaboration wth local schools and institutions, including an in-school performance at Mound Elementary. In June 2015, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra undertook the ensemble’s second international tour, visiting four cities in China for performances and education and learning activities. The second season of Summers@Severance drew solid crowds and new audiences for shorter concerts coupled with a relaxed atmosphere for socializing before and after the concerts. A special collaborative performance took place at the Boys and Girls Club of Cleveland as part of the Orchestra’s “At Home” in Broadway Slavic Village residency.

NOTE A Summary of Significant Accounting Policies Organization: The core purpose of the Musical Arts Association (the Association) is to provide an inspirational experience by serving the art of music at the highest levels of artistic excellence. The Association operates The Cleveland Orchestra; owns and operates Severance Hall, located in Cleveland, Ohio; and owns Blossom Music Center (BMC), situated on approximately 198 acres of land in Summit County, Ohio. Basis of Accounting: The Association’s accounting records are maintained on the accrual basis of accounting. Basis of Presentation: The Association records all unconditional promises to give (pledges) as receivables and revenue in the period made and classifies such contributions into three net asset classes based upon external (donor) imposed restrictions. A description of the three net asset classes follows: Unrestricted Net Assets — Net assets that are not subject to any donor imposed restrictions. Temporarily Restricted Net Assets — Net assets subject to donor imposed restrictions that will be met by actions of the Association and/or the passage of time. Permanently Restricted Net Assets — Net assets subject to donor imposed restrictions that will neither be met or otherwise removed by actions of the Association nor the passage of time. Land, Buildings, and Equipment: Severance Hall opened in 1931 and is located on land leased from Case Western Reserve University. The Association has a 99-year lease, which expires in 2029 and is renewable for additional 99year periods in perpetuity. The lease (including the option period) provides for a nominal rental charge and requires the Association to pay all taxes and assessments that may be levied on the premises. Blossom Music Center opened in 1968 and is now situated on 198 acres of land in Summit County. The Association owns the land and all buildings thereon. Purchased land, buildings, and equipment are stated at cost. Depreciation is computed on a straight-line basis over the estimated useful lives of the respective assets, averaging 20 years for land improvements, 40 years for buildings, and 5 to 20 years for equipment, using a half-year life convention in the year of acquisition. Routine repairs and maintenance and individual capital expenditures of less than five hundred dollars are expensed as incurred. The Association’s music library and archives and its equity in the Medical Center Company are carried at no value in the financial statements. Collective Bargaining Agreements: The Association’s orchestra musicians, stagehands, ticket sellers, and service employees are covered by collective bargaining agreements. The Cleveland Federation of Musicians, Local No. 4, three-year collective bargaining agreement expired August 30, 2015. The Association and the Cleveland Federation of Musicians are currently negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement. The Service Employees International Union, Local 1, collective bargaining agreement expires December 31, 2016, with a wage reopener that would be effective January 1, 2016; the Stage Employees Local No. 27 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees collective bargaining agreement expires August 31, 2017, with a wage reopener that would be effective September 1, 2016; and the Treasurers and Ticket Sellers Division, AFL-CIO Local 756, collective bargaining agreement expires December 31, 2017, with a wage reopener that would be effective January 1, 2017.

NOTE B Endowment Because the endowment assets include funds derived originally from permanently restricted contributions, management thereof is subject to Ohio State law. In July 1996, the 121st General Assembly of the State of Ohio passed Substitute House Bill No. 391. Under the provisions of this Bill as interpreted by the Association, the Association is permitted to expend the gains, both realized and unrealized, on its permanently restricted endowment contributions unless specifically restricted by the donor. Effective June 1, 2009, Ohio’s version of the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA) became law. The Association has interpreted UPMIFA as requiring the preservation of the fair value of the original gift as of the gift date of the donor-restricted endowment funds absent explicit donor stipulations to the contrary. As a result, the Association classifies as permanently restricted net assets (a) the original value of gifts donated to the permanent endowment, (b) the original value of subsquent gifts to the permanent endowment, and (c) accumulations to the permanent endowment made in accordance with the direction of the applicable donor gift instrument at the time the accumulation is added to the fund. The following describes the Association’s classes of endowment net assets: Unrestricted endowment net assets consist of funds which have been designated by the Board of Trustees to function as endowment. The classification includes life income instruments and gains on permanently restricted endowment net assets for which the use of income is not governed by donor imposed restrictions and that have been appropriated by the Board.

Temporarily restricted endowment net assets are subject to donor imposed restrictions that will be met by actions of the Association and/or the passage of time. This classification includes all unspent gains on permanently restricted endowment net assets for which the use of income is governed by donor imposed restrictions. Permanently restricted endowment net assets are subject to donor imposed restrictions that require the assets to be maintained in perpetuity. Certain of these net assets are maintained by the Association and others, charitable perpetual trusts, are in the control of third party trustees or administrators. The Association records its interest in charitable perpetual trusts at its pro-rata share of the fair market value of the assets. The Association’s annual draw is based on a total return philosophy, and is calculated as the prior fiscal year’s draw amount weighted 70%, plus 5% of the prior fiscal year’s average quarterly endowment market value net of investment fees weighted 30%, plus 5% of the current fiscal year’s endowment cash contributions pro-rated based on the fiscal quarter received. Because the amount drawn in a given year is heavily weighted by the market value of the endowment in prior years, the percentage drawn of a given year’s endowment market value often varies from the 5% draw factor used in the calculation. NOTE C Miami Residency Since 2007, for three to four weeks annually, The Cleveland Orchestra has engaged in a Miami residency, which serves adults and young people in Florida (primarily in the Miami-Dade community) through a variety of concerts and community engagement activities including school programs and coaching with university students. During these weeks, the Orchestra performs concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and partners with numerous community organizations. The Orchestra’s Miami residency is referred to locally in Florida as Cleveland Orchestra Miami. The Miami Musical Association (MMA) is a Florida corporation that was formed in 2005 and is exempt from income tax as a public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. MMA operates under its own separate Board of Trustees. The Association employes some staff that are dedicated to the operations of MMA; other members of the Association's staff devote some (but not all) of their time to the activities of MMA. The Association and MMA entered into a Summary Operating and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that governs the relationship between them.

NOTE D Cuyahoga Falls Concerts, Inc. Agreement Effective November 1, 2014, the Association entered into an amended and restated 15-year agreement with Cuyahoga Falls Concerts, Inc. (CFCI) (the “Agreement”) that expires October 31, 2029. This agreement replaced the previous agreement between the two organizations that expired October 31, 2014. CFCI will operate Blossom Music Center (BMC) and will book, promote, and present special attractions, upon which it will pay the Association annual rentals based upon a percentage of CFCI’s gross receipts from BMC special attractions. Upon signing of the Agreement, CFCI granted the Association $7,500 to fund future Association operations. This grant has been recorded as temporarily restricted revenue and is being amortized into unrestricted revenue on a straight-line basis over the 15-year term of the Agreement. The obligations of CFCI under the Agreement are guaranteed by HOB (House of Blues) Entertainment, Inc. In addition, the Association and CFCI will charge One Dollar for each ticket sold for concerts at Bllossom Music Center to fund a capital imporvements program.

NOTE E Pension and Other Retirement Benefi ts The Association has a frozen noncontributory defined benefit pension plan covering substantially all employees. The benefits are based on years of service and the employee’s compensation level. The Association’s funding policy is to contribute annually at least the minimum amount required by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974.

The portion of the defined benefit pension plan covering hall and office employees was frozen effective April 1, 2009. At that date, a new contributory 403(b) plan was established. Association contributions to the 403(b) plan for hall and office employees totaled $348 and $319 for the years ended June 30, 2015 and 2014, respectively. Per the terms of the collective bargaining agreement with the Cleveland Federation of Musicians, Local No. 4 (Union), the portion of the defined benefit pension plan covering these employees was frozen effective August 1, 2009. Effective August 1, 2009, the Association began contributing a percentage of the musician’s minimum weekly salary to the American Federation of Musicians and Employers’ Pension Fund (AFM&EPF). Per further agreement between the Union and the Association: (a) effective March 30, 2010, the Association withdrew from and ceased participation in the AFM&EPF with respect to all contributions provided under the collective bargaining agreement, and no contributions shall be due to the AFM&EPF under the collective bargaining agreement after that date, and (b) effective April 1, 2010, the Association began contributing a percentage of the musicians’ minimum weekly salary into the 403(b) plan. Association contributions to the 403(b) plan for the musiciains totaled $1,390 and $1,360 for the years ended June 30, 2015 and 2014, respectively. In addition to the defined benefit and 403(b) pension plans, the Association provides executive supplemental retirement benefits, which are included as accrued benefits on the statement of financial position.

NOTE F — Debt On December 1, 2003, the Association issued $28,150 of County of Cuyahoga, Ohio, Economic Development Revenue Refunding Bonds, Series 2003, due December 1, 2028 (maturity date). No principal payments are required prior to the maturity date. Proceeds from this issue were used to redeem the County of Cuyahoga, Ohio, Economic Development Revenue Bonds, Series 1998, due April 1, 2028. The Series 1998 Bonds, which were issued as part of the overall financing plan for the renovation, restoration, and expansion of Severance Hall, were called and paid in full in February 2004. The Series 2003 Bonds were issued and continue to function in a floating rate mode, with the interest rate re-set on a weekly basis. From July 1, 2014, to June 30, 2015, the interest rate for the Series 2003 Bonds ranged between 0.40% and 0.50%. The Series 2003 Bonds are supported by a Financial Guaranty Insurance Policy which expires on December 1, 2028. In connection with the issuance of the bond insurance policy, the Association agreed to certain covenants, including limits on additional indebtedness, ratios of unrestricted cash and investments to outstanding debt, and periodic financial reporting. These covenants were met for the year ended June 30, 2015. The Association maintains agreements with KeyBank and PNC Bank that extend through September 2017 and May 2016, respectively, providing committed unsecured lines of credit aggregating $10,000. There were no outstanding balances or commitment fees under these agreements at June 30, 2015 and 2014.

NOTE G Cost of Fundraising The Association charges to operations on the Statement of Operating Activities expenses related to fundraising for annual fund, government grants, special fundraising and endowment pledges and contributions. In addition, the Association netted the direct costs of its planned giving program, $228 and $310 for the years ended June 30, 2015 and 2014, respectively, against realized planned giving expectancies.

The John L. Severance Society is named to honor the philanthropist and business leader who dedicated his life and fortune to creating The Cleveland Orchestra’s home concert hall, which stands today as an emblem of unrivalled quality and community pride. Lifetime giving listing above is as of October 2015.

The Adella Prentiss Hughes Society honors the Orchestra’s founder and first manager, who from 1918 envisioned an ensemble dedicated to community service, music education, and performing excellence. The George Szell Society is named after the Orchestra’s fourth music director, who served for twenty-four seasons (194670) while refining the ensemble’s international reputation for clarity of sound and unsurpassed musical excellence. The Elisabeth DeWitt Severance Society honors not only the woman in whose memory Severance Hall was built, but her selfless sharing, including her insistence on nurturing an orchestra not just for the wealthy but for everyone. The Dudley S. Blossom Society honors one of the Orchestra’s early and most generous benefactors, whose dedication and charm rallied thousands to support and nurture a hometown orchestra toward greatness. The Frank H. Ginn Society honors the man whose judicious management of Severance Hall’s finances and construction created a beautiful and welcoming home for Cleveland’s Orchestra. The 1929 Society honors the vibrant community spirit that propelled 3,000 volunteers and donors to raise over $2 million in a nine-day campaign in April 1929 to meet and match John and Elisabeth Severance’s challenge gift toward the building of the Orchestra’s new concert hall.
