Looking to the future and into The Cleveland Orchestra’s Second Century, I am filled with great pride. The extraordinary musicianship and dedication of this Orchestra is acclaimed anew with each passing season. Our performances are unmatched around the globe. This recognition would be impossible without the passionate and devoted home town that supports us — and has done so for 100 years. Every day, I am grateful for the oppor tunity to collaborate with this group of magnificent artists. There is no greater joy for me than performing onstage with these musicians, in service of this wonderful community here at home. It is heartening to envision our future together — bringing forward a remarkable combination of great artists, great art, and a hometown that cares deeply about our success, here and around the world. This is a potent and powerful collaboration, which will propel The Cleveland Orchestra into a Second Century of extraordinary achievement. T H E PA S T Y E A R has been a time of achievement

and acclaim, of challenges and success, of continuity and change for The Cleveland Orchestra. It has been a year of reflection on the past, hard work in the pres ent, and anticipation for an even greater future. As we prepare to announce the Orchestra’s 100th season for 2017-18, we are also keenly aware that we are not merely celebrating today, but herald ing the dawn of this ensemble’s second century. The Cleveland Orchestra was created by the citizens of Northeast Ohio. It is, and must be, a direct reflection of the strengths, expectations, and support of the people of the Orchestra’s hometown. Carrying the legacy of past generations forward into our Sec ond Century requires renewed commitment and on going hard work. The rewards of success will be many — now and in the years to come. The past year has once again demonstrated The Cleveland Orchestra’s current vitality and continuing achievement, exemplified by:

• unsurpassed musical excellence, with the Orches tra playing at a level unrivaled in the world and unmatched in its own storied past;

• world-wide acclaim, sustaining the Orchestra’s rep

utation for excellence and creating a ready market for the Orchestra’s touring and residencies;

• extraordinary artistic collaborations with ac

claimed guest artists, bringing a richness and depth to the Orchestra’s regular music-making, to its opera and ballet presentations, and to commu nity and education programs;

strong community support and interest, unit ing strong ticket sales, enthusiastic interest from young people (students to young adults), and the

These multi-layered strengths are balanced against some key areas that, despite solid perfor mance in recent years, continue to be of challenge and concern. These include an Endowment that, despite a notable increase across the past half-dozen years, re mains under-sized in relation to the Orchestra’s annual budget. The ultimate success of our drive to propel The Cleveland Orchestra forward into the 21st century is directly tied to our ability to right-size the Endow ment as soon as possible. While doing so, we must ful ly leverage the evolving fundraising landscape across Northeast Ohio and beyond. A related area of both concern and opportunity involves the Orchestra’s performing activities away from our hometown. In light of continuing shifts in the economics of touring and residencies, we are monitoring and evaluating these trends to ensure that we make ongoing adjustments to our schedule and commitments in order to take full advantage of The Cleveland Orchestra’s artistic excellence and reputa tion around the world. Lastly, we are well aware that the Orchestra’s mission to present powerful, transformative, and rel evant music performances requires continual and meaningful efforts to evolve, both on and offstage, in relation to changing community expectations and demographics, and to stay abreast of technological advances that impact our artform. Y E AR- E N D RE S U LT S

The Orchestra’s 2015-16 financial year ended on June 30, 2016, with an operating deficit of $2.4 million, following four years of balanced or positive operating results. This shortfall occurred in the context of a very successful year artistically and institutionally — featur ing continued growth in ticket sales, strong fundraising efforts, ongoing measures in controlling costs and suc cessfully maximizing operating margins, and a strong set of initiatives to propel us forward in the future. The year-end budgetary negative balance is nevertheless a cautionary sign of challenges ahead. Quick fixes, observed at other institutions, such as increasing endowment draw or taking unrestricted

legacy gifts directly into operations, which could have materially improved operating results in the short-term were rejected. The Cleveland Orchestra leadership prefers the discipline of facing our specific challenges more directly. The shortfall for 2015-16 came in two specific ar eas: Special Fundraising in Northeast Ohio, and An nual Fundraising for the Orchestra’s yearly residency in Miami, Florida. Both of these areas were already being evaluated to identify opportunities for changes that will best advance the Orchestra’s overall financial strategies. This year’s shortfall in Miami fundraising was a direct result of changes and challenges across the past several years. Presented in collaboration with an inde pendent Miami-based board, the initiative was launched in 2006 with the generous support of its initial founders. As an annual residency, it has always represented both an innovative model and an unprecedented experiment requiring real world testing — to successfully share both the benefits and the costs of a world-class orchestra on a limited part-time basis with the Miami-Dade metropoli tan area. Discussions are currently underway to seek the best solutions for continuing the Orchestra’s presence in Miami within a revised framework that realistically bal ances our ability to devote resources to the Miami com munity while achieving workable financial goals. In a time of change, transition, and growth, vari ances from plan are inevitable. We believe that those areas that underperformed in 2015-16 are best viewed in the context of the overall trends in past results and within revised plans going forward across all areas of in come and expenses. PL AN N I N G FO R C O N T I N U E D S U C C E S S

André Gremillet’s first year as executive direc tor has featured an extensive period working with the board and staff leadership to evaluate and take stock of The Cleveland Orchestra’s current position in the world — artistically, operationally, financially, and in relation to the many people who support it and who derive great pride and benefit from the ensemble’s many mu sical offerings. Such ongoing evaluation, analysis, and forward visioning are required to help ensure the strength and vitality of any institution. The Cleveland Orchestra’s con tinuing success can only come from affirming our overall mission and goals, and focusing resources accordingly. In May 2016, the musicians of the Orchestra met together with the Board of Trustees and the entire Or chestra staff for a special retreat and discussion day. This was the first time that the membership of all three groups had met as one, and the resulting body of talk ing points, aspirations, and concerns helped establish a

framework for building a unified institutional vision for the future. Subsequently, a Centennial Planning Com mittee was formed under the leadership of Trustee Rich ard K. Smucker to evaluate and approve the final choices of initiatives to celebrate the Orchestra’s 100th season in 2017-18, and commemorate the 50th anniversary of Blossom Music Center and the Orchestra’s 100th birth day in 2018. From these steps of analysis and preparation, The Cleveland Orchestra’s board and staff leadership are now in the midst of a robust Strategic Planning process to affirm the Orchestra’s mission and to commit to a re newed vision for the institution’s Second Century. This intensive six-month process will help ensure a solid and unified vision for the institution going forward, with re ports and completion of this plan due by spring 2017. Within this framework of evaluation and evolution, we are also working to ensure that appropriate focus is placed on our human resources across all levels. We are working to bring in new thinking and fresh perspec tives to the Board of Trustees, to provide diverse opin ions and new ideas now and to guarantee a smooth and clear transition to new generations of leadership in the future. Just as we audition and hire the best musicians in the world, we must strive to recruit and retain the best staff candidates, whether they come from within the orchestra industry, or from related, outside fields. Our volunteer committees, too, must be fully engaged to provide strong and effective support. Overall, we must ensure that all of the Orchestra’s constituencies are actively involved in and focused on the right initiatives and programs for a 21st cen tury orchestra. To grow with the future, we must leave behind good ideas that have run their course, while upholding traditions that still make a difference in the modern world. Across all these efforts, and as was true for the Orchestra’s first century, the mutual partnership of The Cleveland Orchestra and Northeast Ohio community will be the driving force and foundation for our future achievements and success. We believe strongly that great art is a cornerstone to the quality of life of all generations, and we are dedi cated to sharing great music with everyone. The Cleveland Orchestra takes its role as this com munity’s orchestra very seriously — to reach new au dience members, and to share music in new ways, to proudly carry the name and spirit of Cleveland through out the world, to use the power of music to make a dif ference in people’s lives.

At the beginning of April 2016, Franz WelserMöst conducted a dynamic opera-ballet doublebill at Severance Hall, featuring two works by Béla Bartók: The Miraculous Mandarin and Bluebeard's Castle (shown at left). The madefor-Cleveland production was created in collaboration with Chicago's Joffrey Ballet and staged by choreographer-director Yuri Possokhov.

The artistic strength of The Cleveland Orchestra remains great and, in fact, has never been better. Franz Welser-Möst, now in his fifteenth year as music director, and this Orchestra are widely acknowledged for their extraordinarily collaborative music-making and the fi nesse and depth of their performances. Their work to gether is filled with consummate craft, unprecedented precision, and passionate musical understanding. The Orchestra’s board and staff leadership are committed to achieving sustained financial strength for the institution. Our view and commitment is on long-term financial viability and vitality. Our fundrais ing leadership and methods must evolve in order to ensure the Orchestra’s continuing success. While we celebrate and extend the achievements of the Sound for the Centennial Campaign, we must simultaneously build on a robust model of ongoing and focused fu ture fundraising to fully implement this community’s goals for our second century. For The Cleveland Orchestra’s second hundred years, we can and should dream big — not just to con tinue, but to grow, to be even greater than we have been. We will succeed by focusing our efforts, energy, and resources on the right initiatives for the future. We must reinvigorate our work with even greater enthusi asm, dedication, and innovation for tomorrow. We are committed to a campaign to increase the size of the institution’s Endowment to ensure future financial strength. At the same time, we must success fully achieve increased annual fundraising goals that speak directly to the desires of the Northeast Ohio com munity for excellence in all we do. In doing so, we must evolve Special Fundraising, which cannot be sustained, into funding for specific artistic and community initia

tives paired with appropriate recognition for such ongo ing donations. We must present musical performances and education programs that continue to make a differ ence in enhancing this great community, and which at tract funding to pay for the Orchestra’s evolving service across the region, in ongoing and extraordinary ways. Everything that The Cleveland Orchestra repre sents and all that it achieves is only possible through the dedicated efforts of everyone involved — from the musicians onstage to the staff behind the scenes, from the hundreds of volunteers to the many thousands of audience members listening intently, and, finally, to the donors who contribute generously each year toward our success. Thank you for your part in making this journey, and in joining with us as we push forward in pursuit of an extraordinary Second Century. The 100th season will be a time of celebration . . . not just of where we’ve been and what we’ve ac complished, but of fundamentally who we are as an institution and a community going forward. We will celebrate The Cleveland Orchestra as an iconic symbol of what Northeast Ohio believes in and can accom plish, as a symbol around the world for experiencing the musical arts at the highest levels, of inspiring new generations, and harnessing the power of music for good. It is about becoming even better. It is all pos sible, if we work together as a community, if we dig deep into our pockets, draw deeply from our hearts, work enthusiastically with our most creative ideas, and push forward with tireless resolve.

M Y F I R S T Y E A R as executive director has been a wonderfully exciting, humbling, and gratifying ex perience — of learning firsthand about The Cleve land Orchestra and its home community from the inside out.

From my arrival in January 2016, this past year has given me the opportunity to reexamine my view of The Cleveland Orchestra, built over decades of awareness and admiration for this great ensemble. Now, with new and intimate understanding and ex perience of everything this orchestra strives for and accomplishes, I can say with certainty: the partner ship of The Cleveland Orchestra and Franz WelserMöst is even more remarkable than I knew from afar. This great orchestra has grown immeasurably in abil ity and commitment onstage and off, buoyed by an enthusiasm, resolve, and dedication from the home town that created it. It has been a privilege and a pleasure to dis cover the extraordinary generosity of spirit that I have witnessed from the Northeast Ohio community as so many have stepped forward to welcome my family and me. It has been equally moving and eye-opening to learn that this is just how the people of Northeast Ohio are — committed, generous, openhearted, and endlessly supportive of their hometown orchestra. I have no doubts that The Cleveland Orchestra’s big gest strength is its community. PRE PARI N G FO R AN E X T R AO RD I NARY F U T U RE

Today, on the threshold of The Cleveland Or chestra’s centennial season in 2017-18, we have a unique opportunity to set the stage for new genera tions to experience the power of music — in unri valed performances, exemplary education programs, and collaborative community initiatives. We are actively engaged in planning for the Orchestra’s Second Century, intent on securing the Orchestra’s sustainability, stability, and financial

strength, and committed to ensuring the ongoing vitality and vibrancy of this institution and its ability to make a tangible difference in the world. We want the centennial to not only celebrate what has been achieved across the first 100 years, but more impor tantly to serve as a telling overture for the Orchestra’s future — in which new generations will be inspired by the power and artistry of The Cleveland Orches tra’s music-making. Preparing for tomorrow requires that we continue to evolve as an institution today, so as to successfully share our artform and meet the expec tations of a constantly changing world. To best serve our community, here and around the globe, we must consciously and thoughtfully find and fund the best paths forward, to build on everything this Orchestra has come to represent. The past year has seen a number of important and ongoing initiatives to evaluate and strengthen the institution’s overall focus:

• Fundraising — across the summer of 2016 a

nationally-respected consulting firm reviewed the results and potential performance of our fundrais ing, with specific recommendations in relation to the continuing need for growth in annual giving and long-term endowment;

• Internal Alignment and Evaluation — a joint

meeting of board, musicians, staff, and volunteer leadership took place in May 2016, resulting in compelling input and clear-eyed evaluation;

• Centennial Celebrations — a joint board/musi cian committee was formed to shape and affirm plans for the 100th season and beyond.

All of these initiatives, in addition to a new Strategic Plan that will be finalized and announced in the spring of 2017, are about setting priorities. To continue excelling in the 21st century, we must be prepared to most effectively serve Northeast Ohio and the world — through the art and power of music — by focusing on the programming and initiatives that best leverage The Cleveland Orchestra’s core strengths. Much has already changed at The Cleveland Or chestra during the past decade. Whereas young peo ple were once routinely exposed to classical music in school, we are now working harder, going out into the schools as well as bringing students to concerts,

and encouraging families to attend together. Similarly, our concert offerings have been broad ened and changed — while still presenting great or chestral music, unadorned, for those many who want the simplicity and purity of experiencing old classics and new voices. As sales of traditional subscriptions have de clined, we have successfully offered options featuring more flexibility, including build-your-own series and a new ticketing membership plan with monthly pricing. Curtain times have been shifted to match the scheduling of modern lives and entice new audiences. Amenities surrounding concerts have been enhanced and must continue to evolve to match increasing ex pectations. Across all areas, we are committed to offering diverse avenues for the community to experience and enjoy what The Cleveland Orchestra presents — superb performances of great music and great entertainment. T O G E T H E R T OWARD A N E W C E N T U RY

Our current Strategic Planning process is intend ed to sharpen our focus and to reaffirm our shared goals and values. These include:

• Serving music at the highest level of excellence; • Engaging young people throughout our community via inspirational music experiences;

• Serving our community in a way that is impactful and fosters a true love of and passion for music;

• Proudly representing Cleveland on the national and international stage;

• Ensuring long-term sustainability as an institution. In the year ahead, we will come together — mu sicians, board, staff, volunteers, and community — to voice The Cleveland Orchestra’s mission anew for to day and our new century. As we unite and commit ourselves to future suc cess, there is hard work ahead. The future will present new challenges and opportunities. But our success

will extend the Orchestra’s capacity to offer extraor dinary music-making both at home and beyond, to enable the power of music to touch the lives of people across Northeast Ohio (and beyond). There will also be many opportunities to recognize and acknowledge the hard work and collaboration that makes every thing possible — and to champion the promise of what The Cleveland Orchestra can accomplish in the future. With the past as example and guide, it really is possible to believe that the best is yet to come. As I complete my first year as executive director, I am grateful to be building the future of this great Orchestra with so many dedicated and forward-looking partners. Notes to Financial Statements NOTE A Summary of Significant Accounting Policies Organization: The core purpose of the Musical Arts Association (the Association) is to provide an inspirational experience by serving the art of music at the highest levels of artistic excellence. The Association operates The Cleveland Orchestra; owns and operates Severance Hall, located in Cleveland, Ohio; and owns Blossom Music Center (BMC), situated on approximately 198 acres of land in Summit County, Ohio. Basis of Accounting: The Association’s accounting records are maintained on the accrual basis of accounting. Basis of Presentation: The Association records all unconditional promises to give (pledges) as receivables and revenue in the period made and classifies such contributions into three net asset classes based upon external (donor) imposed restrictions. A description of the three net asset classes follows: Unrestricted Net Assets — Net assets that are not subject to any donor imposed restrictions. Temporarily Restricted Net Assets — Net assets subject to donor imposed restrictions that will be met by actions of the Association and/or the passage of time. Permanently Restricted Net Assets — Net assets subject to donor imposed restrictions that will neither be met or otherwise removed by actions of the Association nor the passage of time. Land, Buildings, and Equipment: Severance Hall opened in 1931 and is located on land leased from Case Western Reserve University. The Association has a 99-year lease, which expires in 2029 and is renewable for additional 99year periods in perpetuity. The lease (including the option period) provides for a nominal rental charge and requires the Association to pay all taxes and assessments that may be levied on the premises. Blossom Music Center opened in 1968 and is now situated on 198 acres of land in Summit County. The Association owns the land and all buildings thereon. Purchased land, buildings, and equipment are stated at cost. Depreciation is computed on a straight-line basis over the estimated useful lives of the respective assets, averaging 20 years for land improvements, 40 years for buildings, and 5 to 20 years for equipment, using a half-year life convention in the year of acquisition. Routine repairs and maintenance and individual capital expenditures of less than five hundred dollars are expensed as incurred. The Association’s music library and archives and its equity in the Medical Center Company are carried at no value in the financial statements. Collective Bargaining Agreements: The Association’s orchestra musicians, stagehands, ticket sellers, and service employees are covered by collective bargaining agreements. The Cleveland Federation of Musicians, Local No. 4, three-year collective bargaining agreement expires August 31, 2018. The Service Employees International Union, Local 1, collective bargaining agreement expires December 31, 2016; the Stage Employees Local No. 27 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees collective bargaining agreement expires August 31, 2017; and the Treasurers and Ticket Sellers Division, AFL-CIO Local 756, collective bargaining agreement expires December 31, 2017.

NOTE B Endowment Because the endowment assets include funds derived originally from permanently restricted contributions, management thereof is subject to Ohio State law. In July 1996, the 121st General Assembly of the State of Ohio passed Substitute House Bill No. 391. Under the provisions of this Bill as interpreted by the Association, the Association is permitted to expend the gains, both realized and unrealized, on its permanently restricted endowment contributions unless specifically restricted by the donor. Effective June 1, 2009, Ohio’s version of the Uniform Prudent Management of Institutional Funds Act (UPMIFA) became law. The Association has interpreted UPMIFA as requiring the preservation of the fair value of the original gift as of the gift date of the donor-restricted endowment funds absent explicit donor stipulations to the contrary. As a result, the Association classifies as permanently restricted net assets (a) the original value of gifts donated to the permanent endowment, (b) the original value of subsquent gifts to the permanent endowment, and (c) accumulations to the permanent endowment made in accordance with the direction of the applicable donor gift instrument at the time the accumulation is added to the fund. The following describes the Association’s classes of endowment net assets: Unrestricted endowment net assets consist of funds which have been designated by the Board of Trustees to function as endowment. The classification includes split interest agreements and gains on permanently restricted endowment net assets for which the use of income is not governed by donor imposed restrictions and that have been appropriated by the Board.

Permanently restricted endowment net assets are subject to donor imposed restrictions that require the assets to be maintained in perpetuity. Certain of these net assets are maintained by the Association and others, charitable perpetual trusts, are in the control of third party trustees or administrators. The Association records its interest in charitable perpetual trusts at its pro-rata share of the fair market value of the assets. The Association’s annual draw is based on a total return philosophy, and is calculated as the prior fiscal year’s draw amount weighted 70%, plus 5% of the prior fiscal year’s average quarterly endowment market value net of investment fees weighted 30%, plus 5% of the current fiscal year’s endowment cash contributions pro-rated based on the fiscal quarter received. Because the amount drawn in a given year is heavily weighted by the market value of the endowment in prior years, the percentage drawn of a given year’s endowment market value often varies from the 5% draw factor used in the calculation. NOTE C Miami Residency Since 2007, for three to four weeks annually, The Cleveland Orchestra has engaged in a Miami residency, which serves adults and young people in Florida (primarily in the Miami-Dade community) through a variety of concerts and community engagement activities including school programs and coaching with university students. During these weeks, the Orchestra performs concerts at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and partners with numerous community organizations. The Orchestra’s Miami residency is referred to locally in Florida as Cleveland Orchestra Miami. The Miami Musical Association (MMA) is a Florida corporation that was formed in 2005 and is exempt from income tax as a public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. MMA operates under its own separate Board of Trustees. The Association employes some staff that are dedicated to the operations of MMA; other members of the Association's staff devote some (but not all) of their time to the activities of MMA. The Association and MMA entered into a Summary Operating and Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that governs the relationship between them.

NOTE D Cuyahoga Falls Concerts, Inc. Agreement Effective November 1, 2014, the Association entered into an amended and restated 15-year agreement with Cuyahoga Falls Concerts, Inc. (CFCI) (the “Agreement”) that expires October 31, 2029. CFCI will operate Blossom Music Center (BMC) and will book, promote, and present special attractions, upon which it will pay the Association annual rentals based upon a percentage of CFCI’s gross receipts from BMC special attractions. Upon signing of the Agreement, CFCI granted the Association $7,500 to fund future Association operations. This grant has been recorded as temporarily restricted revenue and is being amortized into unrestricted revenue on a straight-line basis over the 15-year term of the Agreement. The obligations of CFCI under the Agreement are guaranteed by HOB (House of Blues) Entertainment, Inc. In addition, under this agreement, the Association and CFCI are charging One Dollar for each ticket sold for concerts at Bllossom Music Center to fund a capital imporvements program.

NOTE E Pension and Other Retirement Benefits The Association has a frozen noncontributory defined benefit pension plan covering substantially all employees. The benefits are based on years of service and the employee’s compensation level. The Association’s funding policy is to contribute annually at least the minimum amount required by the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974.

The portion of the defined benefit pension plan covering hall and office employees was frozen effective April 1, 2009. At that date, a new contributory 403(b) plan was established. Association contributions to the 403(b) plan for hall and office employees totaled $331 and $348 for the years ended June 30, 2016 and 2015, respectively. The Association’s contributions in 2016 were partially funded by plan forfeitures of $64. Per the terms of the collective bargaining agreement with the Cleveland Federation of Musicians, Local No. 4 (Union), the portion of the defined benefit pension plan covering these employees was frozen effective August 1, 2009. Effective August 1, 2009, the Association began contributing a percentage of the musician’s minimum weekly salary to the American Federation of Musicians and Employers’ Pension Fund (AFM&EPF). Per further agreement between the Union and the Association: (a) effective March 30, 2010, the Association withdrew from and ceased participation in the AFM&EPF with respect to all contributions provided under the collective bargaining agreement, and no contributions shall be due to the AFM&EPF under the collective bargaining agreement after that date, and (b) effective April 1, 2010, the Association began contributing a percentage of the musicians’ minimum weekly salary into the 403(b) plan. Association contributions to the 403(b) plan for the musiciains totaled $1,441 and $1,390 for the years ended June 30, 2016 and 2015, respectively. In addition to the defined benefit and 403(b) pension plans, the Association provides executive supplemental retirement benefits, which are included as accrued benefits on the statement of financial position.

NOTE F — Debt On December 1, 2003, the Association issued $28,150 of County of Cuyahoga, Ohio, Economic Development Revenue Refunding Bonds, Series 2003, due December 1, 2028 (maturity date). No principal payments are required prior to the maturity date. Proceeds from this issue were used to redeem the County of Cuyahoga, Ohio, Economic Development Revenue Bonds, Series 1998, due April 1, 2028. The Series 1998 Bonds, which were issued as part of the overall financing plan for the renovation, restoration, and expansion of Severance Hall, were called and paid in full in February 2004. The Series 2003 Bonds were issued and continue to function in a floating rate mode, with the interest rate re-set on a weekly basis. From July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2016, the interest rate for the Series 2003 Bonds ranged between 0.50% and 1.23%. The Series 2003 Bonds are supported by a Financial Guaranty Insurance Policy which expires on December 1, 2028. In connection with the issuance of the bond insurance policy, the Association agreed to certain covenants, including limits on additional indebtedness, ratios of unrestricted cash and investments to outstanding debt, and periodic financial reporting. These covenants were met for the year ended June 30, 2016. The Association maintains agreements with KeyBank and PNC Bank that extend through September 2018 and May 2018, respectively, providing committed unsecured lines of credit aggregating $10,000. There were no outstanding balances or commitment fees under these agreements at June 30, 2016 and 2015.

NOTE G Cost of Fundraising The Association charges to operations on the Statement of Operating Activities expenses related to fundraising for annual fund, government grants, special fundraising and endowment pledges and contributions. In addition, the Association netted the direct costs of its planned giving program, $168 and $228 for the years ended June 30, 2016 and 2015, respectively, against realized planned giving expectancies.

Franz Welser-Möst’s fourteenth season as music director began in Sep tember with Richard Strauss’s An Alpine Symphony and concluded with Antonin Dvořák’s Stabat Mater at Severance Hall in May. In between, The Cleveland Orches tra’s performances included Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6, Shostakovich’s Fourth Symphony, world premieres of Richard Sortomme’s Concerto for Two Violas (with Cleveland Orchestra members Robert Vernon and Lynne Ramsey) and Bernard Rands’s English Horn Concerto (for Cleve land Orchestra english horn player Robert Walters), and, with the Cleveland Orches tra Chorus, major choral-orchestral works by Beethoven, Dvořák, Handel, Mahler, and Verdi. From September 2015 through Au gust 2016, the Orchestra performed 106 concerts at Severance Hall. These perfor mances included 68 regular subscription concerts, plus the annual Holiday Festival in December, three At the Movies presen tations, the Summers@Severance series, and Family Concert series, plus weekday Education Concerts. The Orchestra’s an nual Gala benefit evening took place on October 3, 2015, featuring soprano Renée Fleming performing with the Orchestra and conducted by Franz Welser-Möst, and raising funds in support of the insti tution’s education and community pro grams. The season featured a doublebill of staged opera and ballet in four perfor mances at Severance Hall in April. The performances, presented by the Orches tra in collaboration with Chicago’s Joffrey Ballet, offered two works by 20th-century Hungarian composer Béla Bartók — the gritty and tragic ballet The Miraculous Mandarin and the operatic psychological thriller Bluebeard’s Castle. The world pre miere production featured newly com missioned choreography and staging for both Bartók works under the direction of choreographer Yuri Possokhov. All together, these Severance Hall concerts drew in just over 165,000 total admissions. Attendance rose for the 2015-16 season at Severance Hall, with record ticket revenue from the sold-out annual Christmas Concerts. The num ber of households from across the region attending Cleveland Orchestra concerts throughout the year also continued to in crease.

THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA

Community and Education The Cleveland Orchestra engaged more people in Northeast Ohio than ever before in 2015-16, featuring an ex pansive variety of education and com munity programs and presentations. In partnership with Case Western Reserve University, Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage, and ideastream, The Cleveland Orchestra took a major role in Violins of Hope Cleveland, a commu nity-wide collaboration centering on violins restored after the Holocaust and celebrating the resilience of the human spirit. Beginning in September 2015 and spanning four months of artistic presen tations and educational programs, Violins of Hope began with a special concert by The Cleveland Orchestra televised live and marking the opening of CWRU’s new Milton and Tamar Maltz Performing Arts Center at The Temple-Tifereth Israel. In December, as part of the Orchestra’s annual series of Education Concerts, as sociate conductor Brett Mitchell and The Cleveland Orchestra — in conjunction with graduate students from the Case Western Reserve University / Cleve land Play House MFA Program in Acting — presented six engaging, hour-long Violins of Hope concerts. In addition, in collaboration with the Jewish Federation of Cleveland, The Cleveland Orchestra presented the Israel Philharmonic con ducted by Zubin Mehta at Severance Hall. The Orchestra’s core education pro grams once again served tens of thou sands, including school fieldtrip Education Concerts for over 17,000 students at Sev erance Hall, one in-school performances by the Orchestra, three masterclasses led by guest artists, and literally hundreds of presentations linking music and learning in local partner schools. Ongoing pro grams also included the Orchestra’s youth ensembles (including celebrations of the 30th season of the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra), Family Concert series, and adult learning programs. The Orchestra’s free communi ty concerts included the Orchestra’s 36th Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Concert in January and its 27th annual Star-Spangled Spectacular in downtown Cleveland to inaugurate the newly reno vated Public Square on July 29. In April, The Cleveland Orchestra continued its ongoing collaborations with Cleveland Play House to present three world premiere performances of a new play, The Good Peaches.

The Orchestra’s “At Home” Neigh borhood Residency program continued to evolve in 2016 and featured a col laborative partnership with the Cleve land Museum of Art. The Orchestra engaged with members of the Hough community to develop impactful music and arts program for their neighbor hood. Musicians from the Orchestra and its youth ensembles took part in in dozens of free presentations and education programs, including a family workshop at Langston Hughes Library, educational activities for youth enrolled in Hough-area summer camps, and par ticipation in the annual neighborhood celebration “A New Day in Hough.” A free public concert by The Cleveland Orchestra was presented (and streamed live on the internet) on August 11 fea turing a specially-assembled Hough Community Chorus.

Touring and Residencies Each year, the Orchestra appor tions several weeks of its performance schedule to residencies and touring ac tivities beyond Northeast Ohio. These are designed to enhance both the artis tic and financial strength of the organi zation overall, and extend and enhance the Orchestra’s worldwide reputation. Following The Cleveland Orches tra’s critically-acclaimed 2015 European Tour and Vienna Residency, discussed in last year’s report, Franz Welser-Möst led The Cleveland Orchestra on their sixteenth international tour together in August 2016. This European Festivals Tour included two concerts each at the Salzburg Festival and the Grafenegg Festival in Austria, and a single concert at Switzerland’s Lucerne Festival. The programs included a focus on Thomas Adès repertoire alongside iconic works by Strauss, Bartók, and Beethoven. The Cleveland Orchestra’s annual residency in Miami, Florida, celebrated its tenth anniversary concert season, presented in collaboration with the Mi ami Music Association and promoted publicly under the name Cleveland Or chestra Miami. The season commemo rated the achievements of the first ten seasons and included a Gala benefit performance on January 23 with so prano Renée Fleming. Four weekends of subscription concerts, led by Franz Welser-Möst and Giancarlo Guerrero, were presented in partnership with Miami’s Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County and, together with the Gala, drew just over 13,000 in admissions. Free Educa

tion Concerts for Miami-Dade County public school students, Musical Rain bow concerts for young children, and after-school programs and mentoring sessions were also offered. As a special thank-you to the South Florida commu nity for ten years of involvement in and support for Cleveland Orchestra Miami, members of The Cleveland Orchestra of fered free chamber music performances at branches of the Miami-Dade Public Library System on March 19. The Cleveland Orchestra’s concert activities away from home also included the return to Carnegie Hall for two laud ed and acclaimed performances. In Janu ary, Franz Welser-Möst led the Orchestra in a program featuring works by Abra hamsen and Shostakovich. The second concert, in February, featured two Mozart piano concertos with longtime Cleveland Orchestra collaborator Mitsuko Uchida as both soloist and conductor.

Severance Hall Rentals Beyond the Orchestra’s own con certs and presentations, there were 113 rental events and performances at Sev erance Hall in 2015-16, hosting just over 68,500 attendees.

Blossom 2016 The Orchestra’s 2016 Blossom Mu sic Festival featured 16 concerts across ten weekends in July, August, and Sep tember, including 12 by The Cleveland Orchestra. The Festival began with two Cleveland Orchestra concerts and a Blossom Festival Band concert, followed by the official Opening Night concert featuring Franz Welser-Möst leading a performance of Beethoven’s Third Sym phony. The Orchestra’s July 17 concert helped commemorate Cuyahoga Val ley National Park’s celebration of the National Park Service Centennial. The summer ended on Labor Day Weekend with over 25,000 admissions across two evenings for the classic film Raiders of the Lost Ark featuring the score per formed live by The Cleveland Orchestra. The season showed solid revenue and attendance against a summer of mixed weather, with Festival concerts averag ing just over 7,150 admissions for each performance (the second highest aver age in the Festival’s history), with total admissions of 115,000. These numbers were driven by strong sales of Lawn Ticket Books and continuing family at tendance spearheaded through the Orchestra’s innovative Under 18s Free subsidized ticketing program. The summer also featured 27

non-Festival concert performances and 2 other events hosted by LiveNa tion, which operates Blossom Music Center for the Musical Arts Association. Attendance totaled 398,000, with an av erage of 14,700 per concert. Between Festival and non-Festival concerts, total cumulative attendance at Blossom moved past 20 million since the facility opened in 1968.

Orchestra Personnel During the year, Franz Welser-Möst appointed four new members to The Cleveland Orchestra, who joined the Orchestra as the year progressed: Dane Johansen as cello (February 2016), Jes sica Lee as assistant concertmaster and Wesley Collins as principal viola (start of 2016-17 season), and Jiah Chung Chap delaine as violin (October 2016). There were also four members who concluded their tenure during the past year: Ste phen Warner (violin) in January after 37 years, Yoko Moore (assistant concertmaster) in May after 34 years, and Robert Vernon (principal viola) at the end of the Blossom season, after 40 years of service, as well as Linnea Nereim (bass clarinet), who stepped down from the Orchestra in August after 31 years of service.

The Adella Prentiss Hughes Society honors the Orchestra’s founder and first manager, who from 1918 envisioned an ensemble dedicated to community service, music education, and performing excellence. The George Szell Society is named after the Orchestra’s fourth music director, who served for twenty-four seasons (194670) while refining the ensemble’s international reputation for clarity of sound and unsurpassed musical excellence. The Elisabeth DeWitt Severance Society honors not only the woman in whose memory Severance Hall was built, but her selfless sharing, including her insistence on nurturing an orchestra not just for the wealthy but for everyone. The Dudley S. Blossom Society honors one of the Orchestra’s early and most generous benefactors, whose dedication and charm rallied thousands to support and nurture a hometown orchestra toward greatness. The Frank H. Ginn Society honors the man whose judicious management of Severance Hall’s finances and construction created a beautiful and welcoming home for Cleveland’s Orchestra. The 1929 Society honors the vibrant community spirit that propelled 3,000 volunteers and donors to raise over $2 million in a nine-day campaign in April 1929 to meet and match John and Elisabeth Severance’s challenge gift toward the building of the Orchestra’s new concert hall.
