IN FOCUS: BACH AND HIS LEGACY J.S. Bach 1685-1750 If one could pinpoint the birthplace of all modern music, inevitably that would point to Bach. Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, Mendelssohn, and Brahms were among his admirers; Beethoven described him as the “original father of harmony.” His music is revered for its intellectual depth, technical command, and sublime artistic beauty. Join Franz Welser-Möst and The Cleveland Orchestra for an exploration of this most universal of composers through two programs of his works as well as a music marathon featuring highlights from his vast body of masterpieces.

MAY 27 — Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. MAY 30 — Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Following The Cleveland Orchestra’s hugely successful presentation of Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen this past season, music director Franz Welser-Möst and stage director Yuval Sharon team up again for a performance installation of Strauss’s rarely-performed Daphne at Severance Hall. As with Sharon’s landmark Vixen—where the actors integrated themselves with animated projections to sing atop cartoon animal bodies—this opera event will transform the Orchestra, singers, score, and scenery into a single piece of art.
