The Cleveland Orchestra Franz Welser-Möst, conductor BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 6 (“Pastoral”) STRAUSS Symphonia domestica Beethoven was a lover of nature who delighted in frequent hikes in the countryside surrounding Vienna. In his “Pastoral,” his most programmatic symphony, you can hear the rolling of thunder, a joyous country dance, and the calling of a shepherd’s pipes. An amusing contrast in spirit is Strauss’s musical reflection on his comfortable domestic life, which harmoniously conveys daily events and family life. Sponsor: Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc.

Composed during the politically perilous period after the Nazis came to power, Daphne had deep personal significance to the composer. Strauss was well aware that the myth of Daphne was the subject of the very first opera ever composed; his own version can be seen as a guarded demand for the integrity and continuity of creativity in the face of political and worldly hindrances.
