Powerful. Primal. Revolutionary. Almost no musical work has had such a powerful influence or evoked as much controversy as Igor Stravinsky’s ballet score The Rite of Spring. The work’s scandalous premiere famously resulted in a riot – and its pulse-pounding, fiery rhythms and intensity are still shocking today.

MAHLER’S TRAGIC SYMPHONY OCT 5 | THU 7:30 PM OCT 6 | FRI 8:00 PM Franz Welser-Möst, conductor
MAHLER Symphony No. 6 (“Tragic”)
Orchestral music at its most gripping and dramatic. “Not one of his works came as directly from his inmost heart as this,” Mahler’s wife, Alma, wrote. It is powerful and monumental, with moments of tender beauty contrasting with bleak, utter despair. Its famous threeblow ending seems to be a premonition of three tragic events that took place in Mahler’s life. But despite his pessimism, Mahler leaves us with the sensation that we are more alive than ever before.

THANKSGIVING WEEKEND
The intense passion and excitement of Tchaikovsky. Tchaikovsky spent his life worrying that he could create only so much music. He wrote the Fourth Symphony at a particularly difficult time, wrestling with the demons that life had placed in front of him. Nearly mad with passion, the act of writing the music itself helped to rebalance his sanity from agitated gloom to radiant triumph.

Powerful romanticism & raw excitement. TRISTAN AND ISOLDE
A journey toward transcendence and understanding. In a special two-week series of concerts revolving around performances of Wagner’s ultra-Romantic opera Tristan and Isolde, Franz Welser-Möst explores the depths and wonder of ecstasy — in a journey toward transcendence and understanding, through music, art, and belief. In Tristan and Isolde the 19th century’s Romantic Era reached its climax. In this mesmerizing score, immortality turns love into legend. Here, Wagner wrote powerful music of unending longing (and unresolved harmony) — of a doomed love that reaches its full potential only through death. Renowned dramatic soprano Nina Stemme returns to Cleveland to join a cast of internationallyacclaimed singers, together with the clarity and power of The Cleveland Orchestra.

THE PROMETHEUS PROJECT
The Centennial Season ends with a special presentation of all nine of Beethoven’s Symphonies, examined through the metaphor of Prometheus, a daring Greek Titan who defied Zeus to bestow on humanity the gift of fire – a spark that has powered the imagination of generations, the warmth of justice and goodness, the fight for right, and individual freedoms. This is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to hear Beethoven’s genius in all its glory.
