Welcome the New Year with Strauss's comic opera
ARIADNE AUF NAXOS JAN 13 | SUN 4:00 PM JAN 17 | THU 7:30 PM JAN 19 | SAT 8:00 PM Franz Welser-Möst, conductor Frederic Wake-Walker, director Tamara Wilson, soprano (Ariadne/Diva) Andreas Schager, tenor (Bacchus/Tenor) Daniela Fally, soprano (Zerbinetta) Kate Lindsey, mezzo-soprano (Composer)
STRAUSS Ariadne auf Naxos Sung in German with English supertitles.
Serious opera and slapstick comedy collide … but the shows must go on! In this fun and ingenious story of Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos, a mysterious mogul has commissioned an evening of exotic entertainment for an exclusive dinner party: a dramatic opera based on the myth of Ariadne, plus a comical troupe of clowns. But plans for the evening are derailed and both entertainments must be presented simultaneously! Divas collide and lowbrow comedy meets high art in this new, made-forCleveland production. STRAUSS Ein Heldenleben (A Hero's Life)
Strauss wrote, with great irony, “Since Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ is so unpopular with our conductors today and hence rarely performed, I am filling the void with a tone poem on a similar theme.” He was mocked by the critics for making himself the hero of this work: “a monstrous act of egotism,” according to one. Strauss was particularly delighted that the critics recognized themselves as the “Hero’s Adversaries.” Still, Ein Heldenleben is a delightful musical portrait, virtuosic and tuneful.
