Classic. Artistic excellence, the promotion of classical music and great artists, and reaching a broad audience: these form the foundation of everything the Cliburn does—every competition, every concert, every outreach program. We present the Cliburn Concerts series annually as perhaps the most classic manifestation of that mission. The world’s finest artists are carefully matched with the city’s finest venues, and the result is pure, inspired music-making. We are honored to host such genius in our city and, above all, to have such regular access to the finest, most unifying music in the world. We hope you’ll join us this season for these transcendent experiences.

Is it possible for a pianist to be too good? If anyone faces jeopardy with that question, it’s Marc-André Hamelin.
– The New York Times
Marc-André Hamelin, piano Tuesday, October 6, 2015 7:30 p.m. Bass Performance Hall
Marc-André Hamelin’s blend of startlingly original musicianship and virtuosity has earned him legendary status as a true avatar of the piano. Long known for his matchless exploration of unfamiliar pianistic terrain, he is now recognized worldwide for the originality and technical brilliance of his performances of the classic repertoire. His career has been replete with accolades— among them nine Grammy® nominations, the 2014 ECHO Klassik Instrumentalist of the Year, and the German Record Critics’ Lifetime Achievement Award. Writing in The New Yorker, Alex Ross praised his “monstrously brilliant technique and his questing, deepthinking approach” and called Hamelin’s hands “among the wonders of the musical world.”
Yefim Bronfman is well known as a fearless pianist for whom no score is too demanding. – Wall Street Journal
Yefim Bronfman, piano Tuesday, January 19, 2016 7:30 p.m. Bass Performance Hall
Grammy® Award winner Yefim Bronfman is widely regarded as one of the most compelling virtuoso pianists performing today. His commanding technique and exceptional lyrical gifts have won him consistent critical acclaim and enthusiastic audiences worldwide, whether for his solo recitals, his prestigious orchestral engagements, or his rapidly growing catalogue of recordings. “A pianist with comprehensive skills who can seemingly play anything” (The New York Times), he will tackle the mammoth task of performing all three of Prokofiev’s powerful, dissonant “War Sonatas” (6, 7, & 8) in this, his first Cliburn Concerts appearance in over a decade.
Garrick Ohlsson is a big pianist with a calmly commanding presence. – The Independent
Garrick Ohlsson, piano Tuesday, April 5, 2016 7:30 p.m. Bass Performance Hall
Since his triumph at the 1970 Chopin International Piano Competition (the only American winner ever), pianist Garrick Ohlsson has established himself worldwide as a musician of magisterial interpretive and technical prowess. Although long regarded as one of the world’s leading exponents of the music of Frédéric Chopin, the Grammy® Award winner commands an enormous repertoire, which ranges over the entire piano literature. (To date he has at his command more than 80 concertos, ranging from Haydn and Mozart to works of the 21st century, many commissioned for him.) In this season-closing concert, he’ll perform works by Beethoven, Schubert, and Chopin.

Rising Stars of the Metropolitan Opera Thursday, October 22, 2015 7:30 p.m. Kimbell Art Museum Piano Pavilion “Rising Stars of the Metropolitan Opera” offers fans across North America a rare opportunity to experience remarkable young artists on the cusp of extraordinary careers. For more than 125 years, the Metropolitan Opera has been the artistic home of the greatest singers in the world. But the Met is also the launching pad for the opera stars of the future. Some of today’s leading artists got their first big break by winning the company’s national auditions, by being members of the young artist program, or by catching the attention of Met talent scouts. Stephanie Blythe, Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Deborah Voigt, Thomas Hampson, and Mariusz Kwiecien are just a few of the major artists to have come through the Met ranks. Another generation of young singers is waiting in the wings to be discovered, and we’ll be among the first to hear them.

Alessio Bax, piano Thursday, November 12, 2015 7:30 p.m. Kimbell Art Museum Piano Pavilion
Pianist Alessio Bax creates “a ravishing listening experience” (Gramophone) with his lyrical playing, insightful interpretations, and dazzling facility. Hailed by International Piano as “a pianist of refreshing depth,” he has been called “perhaps the most elegant of today’s young pianists” by The New Yorker. First prize winner at the Leeds and Hamamatsu international piano competitions—and a 2009 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient—he has appeared as soloist with over 100 orchestras. An active chamber musician, Bax has collaborated with Emanuel Ax, Joshua Bell, Sol Gabetta, Steven Isserlis, Paul Watkins, and Jörg Widmann, among others. He has also performed in recital in the world’s major music halls. This appearance marks his Cliburn Concerts debut.
There is an instinctive dialogue and musical spark between them. They bring urgency, intensity, and edginess to their performing. There is no playing it safe. – Denver Post
Alisa Weilerstein, cello and Inon Barnatan, piano Thursday, February 4, 2016 7:30 p.m. Kimbell Art Museum Piano Pavilion
Cellist Alisa Weilerstein’s passion, commitment, and breathtaking technique combined with undeniable musicianship make her one of today’s most exciting artists. Upon awarding her its 2011 “genius grant,” the MacArthur Foundation stated: “A young cellist whose emotionally resonant performances of both traditional and contemporary music have earned her international recognition, … Weilerstein is a consummate performer, combining technical precision with impassioned musicianship.” Inon Barnatan is a true poet of the keyboard: refined, searching, and unfailingly communicative. His sincerity and expressiveness bring audiences into each phrase as if hearing them for the first time, rivaling even his technical abilities. Together, these two artists offer an alluring musical event with the combination of immaculate technique, voicing, and heart.

a must-attend for lovers of great new music, where works are heard and discussed by the composers themselves

“Made in Fort Worth” An afternoon with Martin Blessinger & Till Meyn Saturday, September 19, 2015 2:00 p.m. The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
Our city is rife with musical talent, with a rich history of encouraging young artists. No organization understands that better than the Cliburn, and it is fitting that we launch this year’s Modern series, which celebrates living American composers, with works that were written here in our hometown. Two brilliant composers, who have each chosen to make Fort Worth their home as associate professors at TCU, will showcase their music. Martin Blessinger’s works have been performed around the country and abroad—and have won many awards, including in the New York City Fringe Festival (Best Music for the off-Broadway musical Lost) and the Diana Barnhart American Song Competition (cum laude, for Cradle Song). Till Meyn’s music has also been widely performed, with highlights including Tango Royale in Italy; Wall of Babel in Cuba; Revolutions at Carnegie Hall (Weill Recital Hall); and Orion (Tango) in Spain and China.
‌an American songwriter with a knack for matching texts to lyrically generous, harmonically rich music. – The New York Times
Ben Moore, composer Saturday, February 13, 2016 2:00 p.m. The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth
The music of American composer Ben Moore—who will be on hand to hear and discuss his works at this afternoon concert— has been performed by many leading singers, including soprano Deborah Voigt, mezzo-sopranos Susan Graham and Frederica von Stade, tenors Lawrence Brownlee and Robert White, baritone Nathan Gunn, and six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald. His work has been called “brilliant” and “gorgeously lyrical” by The New York Times, while Opera News has praised the “easy tunefulness” and “romantic sweep” of his songs. His first opera, Enemies, A Love Story, premiered at the Palm Beach Opera in February 2015. Of this new work, the Wall Street Journal noted: “Hints of operetta, American musicals and a little Leonard Bernstein coexist with soaring Puccinian lines, folk tunes and klezmer melodies.”
