The Clothes Maiden A journal for the creative and fashionable minds
£2.00 Edition 3. Oct/Nov 2011
A journal for the fashionable and creative minds.
E
very edition of The Clothes Maiden I have created so far has always been my favourite, but this time round this one has been extra special. When putting it together, it reminded me of when The Clothes Maiden was just a simple blog, blogging about all kinds of fashion from around the world. The blog I started just to put all my inspiration and ideas all in to one place, so I could stop bookmarking page after page. This edition features stunning work from fashion illustrator Niki Pilkington, where I also had the absolute pleasure to interview her as well. The pages you are about to read also feature an interview with Killdarling creator, Sam Klemick. Each page is some-‐ thing different for you to discover. I hope you enjoy this edition just as much as the last one, I had so much fun putting it together, and thank you everyone for taking your time out to be involved with Edition 3 of The Clothes Maiden

Holly Howe Holly Howe’s collection is a contemporary, eye catching
boutique jewellery label that has been out for just over 3 months. The designer, Holly Simpson-‐Howe is from Dun-‐ edin, New Zealand and she is only 23 years old which is an inspiration. Before Holly came up with her label she completed a Product Design Degree and then in 2009 she moved on to Jewellery and Metalsmithing paper, with this under her belt she was inspired to design her own products and go on to launch The Holly Howe Collection. Her autumn/winter 2011 collection is very exciting with some stunning, unique pieces of jewellery. Holly takes on simple geometric shapes such as pyramids and makes them into dazzling necklaces and alluring rings. With an expensive look but affordable prices the rings are to die for! Especially the four diamond sterling silver ring which gives one a look of sophistication. Like Holly herself, the label is based in Dunedin, New Zealand and she has her collection in many impressive places such as: Angel Divine and Guilty as Sin all based in New Zealand. You can view Holly Howe’s collection on her Facebook page and you can buy her beautiful jewellery online. Holly Howe’s collection is yet to have overseas stockist but we hope that time comes soon as we would love to see her collection here in the UK.

Sam Klemick is the goddess behind Killdarling, she’s created this dreamy, cotton candy coloured label
Ǥ ϐ ǡ collection and where her idea came from. When asked about the brand, Sam says; ”Killdarling is clothing for tea parties and after parties. For trips to Paris and trips to the mailbox. It is for the girl who has had enough of rainbows, unicorns and Prince Charming. For the girl who doesn’t care if she loses a shoe at the ball. For the girl who throws the other shoe at Prince Charming, takes off with the hot valet guy who parked her pumpkin carriage, and heads with him to the afterparty. Barefoot. Killdarling is made for mischief and adven-‐ ture.” Tell us a bit about yourself? I am originally from Miami, I grew up wearing barely any clothes because it’s just so damn hot. I think a lot of my inspiration comes from that, the most frequently made comment to me is: “Sam, did you forget your pants again?” I like short dresses and long t-‐shirts! Sometimes I am very loud and goofy, I like to play with my friends, draw, colour and build forts. I absolutely love your dresses- when did it all start? Where did the name come from? It all started while I was sitting at my desk working as an asst. designer at GUESS. I dreamt up a wonderland tea ϐ Ǥ The name comes from my childhood. My mother calls me darling, and quite often I think she meant to put the word kill in front of it, as in “Sometimes I just want to kill darling Sam.” I gave my family a run for their money when I was younger. What inspires you? Ǥ ϐ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ ϐ ǡ ǡ ǡ ǡ -‐ wick, Twiggy, the 60’s, the 70’s, Goldie Hawn in Sugarland Express, the list goes on! If you had to wear just one fashion designer's clothes for life, who would it be? Erin Fetherston Do you look at any other designers for tips, inspiration? Erin Fetherston and Betsey Johnson. I interned for Betsey Johnson in New York for three months while I was in Ǥ ϐ ǡ ǡ her personal collection. Her attitude inspires me, she has stayed true to herself after all these years, and Erin Fetherston is my dreams materialised into reality. If you could dress any celebrity with your beautiful collection- who would it be? And why? Kirsten Dunst. I think she is dreamy. Is there a type of woman you have in mind while designing your dresses? If so, what kind of woman is she? ϐ ǡ Ǥ Any advice you may have for aspiring fashion designers? Just don’t stop, say yes to every opportunity, because you never know where it will lead to next. Don’t stop even when you are tired, can only afford to eat out at 7/11, and question everything, still, and don’t stop, because if you love it, there is nothing else you know how to do. Which fashion trends interest you the most? The 70’s ϐ Ǧ ǫ I’ve been staring at the sky a lot lately, at hot air balloons and kites, I think I’m gonna start there. And colour, lots of Miami bright neon colour. I’m over pastels for the moment.

Smitten & Hazel Jewellery
Smitten and Hazel began back in 2010 as a creative outlet for two girls from Illinois with a graph-‐
ic design background. Their small blog quickly grew into an all craft and DIY inspiration source and now it is slowly shifting to a handmade jewellery and accessory shop. Smitten & Hazel love all things creative and hope to focus on that more in their blog. The Early Fall 2011 Necklace collection encompasses changing colours of autumn, rich penny red and muted patina tones, along with few pops of bright gold and electric blue. Still playful in bunt-‐ ing shapes and various triangles. When we asked them about their latest look book they said; “I love using antique brass metals and this time switched things up and used matching copper for the penny necklaces. This has been a fun collection to create, I couldn't feel more accomplished when it was all ready for viewing.”-‐ Smitten & Hazel

An interview with Fashion illustrator, Niki Pilkington
So there was one week in September , it was London Fashion Week, I was there, I had a ball and as I was getting from one show to the next I walked past Topshop on Oxford Street. To my surprise, I saw Niki Pilkington’s stunning il-‐ lustrations in the front window beaming back at me. Each of her illustrations ϐ Ǥ ϐ ǡ ϐ -‐ spires Niki, and basically get a feel of what a typical day of hers is like.
26
1) Tell us a bit about yourself, and when did your passion for art begin? I'm a 24 year old Welsh illustrator. Drawing has always been a big part of what I am & what I've wanted to become. My uncle's a successful illustrator in Reykjavik, Iceland & since I was little I've always watched what he does in ore. It was seeing him that really taught me that it was possible to have a career doing what you love. I went though all the usual routes of education -‐ GCSE, A-‐Level, Art Foundation, then I specialised in Fashion Promotion & Illustra-‐ tion as a degree at Ravensbourne, London. After ϐ ȋ Ȍ 2009, I am happy to say that I'm loving every minute of what I do.
ʹȌ Take us through a typical day of yours... I don’t have a set routine, it just depends on what I’m working on at the time, when I’m in North Wales, then I try to make the most of being in such a beautiful place. I try to go for a run ϐ Ǧ ǯ two minutes away from the sea, so there’s no shortage of ‘thinking space’ I’ll usually take my sketchbook & a tin of Derwent pencils with me & get some ideas down on paper. I then spend most of my day working from my studio which is just down the road from my house. If I’m in London or Cardiff, then I’ll spend my spare time out photographing girls & visiting galleries and coffee shops.
27
3) Who are these gor- geous girls that you draw? My illustrations are mix of reality & my imagination. Working from photo reference, I can modify existing photos by combining them with my own photography in order alter the com-‐ position, clothing, expressions, style & gestures etc. I studied fashion promotion and illustration as a degree, & because of this, my work is very fashion orientated, so I’m a sucker for photographing cool looking girls when I’m out and about -‐ I do this as often as possible, so I have thousands of photos of girls, but I also work heavily from what I imagination the girl could look like, I like to think this keeps my work looking fresh.
28
4) I read that maga- zines inspire you a lot, does anything else? If so what? It may sound obvious, but the person I’m drawing is the biggest inspiration for what I’m drawing. Whether I’m working from found im-‐ ages, or on personal commissions, for me, the most important part of my work is that I portray certain personality traits of the girl that I’m drawing & allow the viewer to get an insight of what she’s all about. I draw these girls because they lure me in for some reason, & I want the person looking at the picture to feel the same way. If you’re going to tell a story, I believe you should tell it right.
6) Are you still splitting your time in between Paris, London and North Wales?
5) What has been the best thing so far that’s hap- pened to you in your career? The jobs that I’m being asked to do just seem to be getting better and better all the time, so it always feels like the one I’m working on at that moment in time is the best one. I’ve just ϐ ǡ some pieces for their Oxford Street store window for LFW, as well as some other illustrated good-‐ Ǧ Ǥ ϐ job and a half -‐ it’s a brand that I’ve always wanted to work with, so that was pretty amazing for me.
I’m not based in Paris anymore, I’m now back working between North Wales, & London & I’m also spending a lot of time in Cardiff -‐ which I love, it’s a brilliant city. But this will all be changing soon, as I’m going to be spend-‐ ing a lot 2012 exhibiting around the world, ǯ Ǩ ȋ ǯ keeping my blog updated with where I’ll be ȌǤ
29
7) Do you have an all time favourite illustration that you have drawn or is it too hard to just choose one? The illustration of the girl holding a paperchain has to be one of my Ǥ ϐ made in my new studio too, so I’ll always remember that one.
ͺȌ Your illustrations are so beautiful, what re-‐ search do you do before you start getting down to work? I have hundreds of websites and blogs book-‐ marked on my Mac and I look through these when-‐ ever I’m in need of a bit of inspiration. But it’s not the websites and blogs of illustrators that I really turn to when I’m trying to come up with my next il-‐ lustration -‐ Instead I look to graphic design, fashion, textiles etc, because I feel I get much more original ideas when I look away from illustration. Books Ƭ ȋ Ȍ ǡ ϐ gleam some kind of idea out of them.
30
9) You seem to use a lot of colour in your work, especially in your latest series- What inspired you to do this? The brighter the better if you ask me. If you have colour, I believe you should use it.
10) If there was one bit of advice you could pass on to new or struggling artists, what would it be? Try your very hardest, always, and don’t take criticism to heart -‐ try and use it to your advantage and learn from feedback you get. And remem-‐ ber that no one likes a show off!

Nikita Clothing
38
Nikita Clothing is an Icelandic based brand, but are blooming globally with their international clothing web-‐store. So what is Nikita Clothing about you may be asking? They specialise in everything from outerwear to streetstyle, which encourages a city girl like myself to venture outdoors in our grim UK weather and for-‐ tunately, still be fashionably clothed! They also do a lot of super cool snowboarding stuff too. Looking back at their past collections, I quickly thought it was for those hardcore mountain climbing girls, who also love the odd hike. However, when it came to their autumn/ winter 2011 collections, I was excited to see what this brand was all about, and I was not disap-‐ pointed with the results. I was impressed how they made a simple jumper: bold but fun with geometric styled patterned trousers in deep maroon shades to go with it, each item of clothing has a futuristic twist! Not to mention the play-‐ suits that looked like they were made to be so comfy yet so fabulous at the same time. This collection is made for everyone and anyone who is fun and daring. Their autumn/ winter streetwear collection says a lot about winter in general; who says that winter is the most unglamorous time ǫ ϐ ǡ them up however you fancy. Nikita Clothing seems to be winning with both sides of the story, making our winter lives more pleasurable. Eve-‐ rything looks so comfortable, these are the type of clothes that you can wear all day and not change them once you get home. None of it seems to look itchy, tight or drab, the three common adjectives associated with this time of year, which is a bonus. You might be thinking, Nikita Clothing is totally for those extreme, out-‐ ϐ Ǥ ǡ you can see pretty much anyone can wear their clothes. It’s a bit like saying ‘Vans are only for skateboarders’ and we know that’s not true! ȋ Ȍǡ -‐ ture out this winter rather than hibernate, and moan about not having Ǩ ϐ weather perfectly this season. Rouse by Annabelle Lee
48
Rouse by Annabelle Lee is a diverse and wearable jewellery collection. The pieces can be worn with
ϐ Ǥ mesmerising. The necklaces are long with beads and crosses which suggest a bit of a statement piece-‐ but not too radical so they could still be worn for any occasion. The hippie inspiration is represented in these pieces, hanging loosely from the neck, carefree and beautiful. One of our favourite pieces is the bracelet with the leaf shape hanging from it, it would make you want to wear tee shirts in all weather just to show off this dazzling piece! And just remember...When you think of hippie one of the main connotations surrounding this could be that it is over the top-‐ this is a negative and luckily Annabelle Lee proves anything but. Her collection ϐ -‐ cessorise with this collection.

Tribal Style
Have you always liked the look of
those earrings your daring friends wear that have their ears stretched? But you’ve never seen them available for regular pierced ears? Well, fear not for Tribal Style an online shop through etsy, means you can buy these earrings without having to gauge your ears! They would fool anybody and there is a range to choose from. One of our favourites has to be Maha-‐ raja Curls – Fake Gauge Horn Earrings. These give quite a gothic image but suit to be worn with anything and they are beautifully hand carved!
Like all of the designs, the best part is that they may look heavy but unlike the real thing, they are very lightweight yet still wearable and have the look of stretched ears with two separate pieces. There are many other designs to choose from like wings, to swans, you would ϐ ϐ taste. All of the earrings are made with love, taken from originally made gauged ears and then split into two so the tribal style is made for everybody. Every material is eco friendly which is a bonus as they are hip and sustainable. Tribal Style are very eco conscious so purchasing these would help you do your bit and for a reasonable price wear something you love.

Monsieur Qui
70
Monsieur Qui is an inspirational illustrator sharing his work as street art in Paris. Those of you lucky enough to have seen it will know he is a genius when it comes to using ink. Those of you who haven’t, well it’s your lucky day because below I have found some of what I think are his most beautiful work. 71
His illustrations look like they have come straight from a fashion catwalk they are that detailed and glamorous, mainly of beautiful women but other things too. You just wouldn’t expect to see them on the walls of Paris but rather in high-‐end fashion magazines, this is what makes these illustrations so special. Monsieur Qui is clearly that passionate about his work that he doesn’t care about showing Ǥ ϐ art and bring even more culture to the city of Paris. 72
I don’t think any of his particular works could be categorised as they range from fashion to surreal-‐ ism. Some have statements across them whilst others, you feel like you need to look more than twice to come up with your own interpretation, in this sense, Monsieur Qui has catered for all artsy types without even realising it, from the people who like statement art to the people who prefer abstract or surrealism, he is talented in it all. If you’re lucky enough to visit Paris you might very well see some of his work pasted on walls in the streets. You can see more on how his work is slowly changing, right here; www.monsieurqui.com 73

The Pin Pals are made up of Samantha Purdy and Sara Guindon from Montreal, Canada. Samantha and Sara met back in 2006 and decided to combine efforts to establish a small business. Sam, works with vintage textiles and cross stitches her own designs on to handmade brooches and earrings. Sara is an illustrator and prints her drawings on paper toys and T-‐shirts. Sara also dabbles in wool felting and applique. They make all kinds of little creations in their Etsy shop, from buttons to brooches, I also stumbled across the odd hairband as well. Their handmade goods start from as little as £9.00, which I think is an absolute bargain.
