How to beat Str8ts – Like Sudoku, no single number can repeat in any row or column. But... rows and columns are divided by black squares into compartments. These need to be filled in with numbers that complete a ‘straight’. A straight is a set of numbers with no gaps but can be in any order, eg [4,2,3,5]. Clues in black cells remove that number as an option in that row and column, and are not part of any straight. Glance at the solution to see how ‘straights’ are formed.

OAKWELL’S SPOTLIGHT THE REMARKABLE Mr RITCHIE “A fat old comic who sings a bit” is the way he describes himself, but really he’s rather more than that. Speak to any artiste on the Northern club scene and ask if they’ve heard of Mark Ritchie and the answer would be “Of course” . Known for years as a most capable vocalist, Mark was Entertainment Manager and presenter at a Holiday Park on the East Coast. He was still working in the clubs, but was also a reviewer and Northern Representative for “The Stage” newspaper, which also involved reviewing showcases etc, at which he was a dab hand. About two years ago his contract at the Holiday Park ran out, and The Stage changed it’s policy, trying to appeal to a younger readership, and losing all interest in the social club scene. They became even more London based, reporting about grants and such money matters. Mark’s services were no longer needed. A reader for many years I decided there was no longer anything of interest in it for me, and cancelled, and so did everyone else I knew who read it, for the same reason. Mark thought there was an opening there and took his courage (and his bank account) in both hands and decided to start his own magazine, calling it “UK CABARET. The Managing director of “The Stage” was rather sniffy, but the mag, monthly and produced by a number of dedicated part-timers, is of a high standard and picking up readers and advertisers month by month. It contains reviews, articles, many about performers, and news items, and can be found on the internet to sample. I came across Mark himself a week or two ago in Manchester, at Droylsden Catholic Club, not noted for its love of comedian. How would he fare? Very well indeed I thought; he has the technique, though perhaps he shouldn't be quite so hard on Camilla, who I daresay is a very nice person (though a toff !). Also spotted in Manchester was Ebony Jordan, another Yorkshire artiste and one I’ve always rated. She opened up with a rather mundane number which lots of acts use, the went on to give us a most interesting set, impeccably presented, as might be expected. Both these artistes were accompanied by live backing—yes it does exist in some Manchester clubs—and it does make a real difference.. And I found out the other day that there is an artiste in the South of England who is known as Ebony Johnson! NOSTALGIA CORNER—50 YEARS AGO Well, just fifty years ago I was in Doncaster’s Scala Progressive Club watching Peter Casson’s “Hypnotic Phantasy”, quite a long spot, but one which left the crowd spellbound. He wasn’t short of volunteers, though as all hypnotists do he weeded out the unsuitable candidates first.. Not all such performers are successful in clubs. I’ve seen one or two who couldn’t get anyone under their influence, but Peter Casson was much too good for that to happen. Peter Casson of course went on to build his own club, the Ba Ba in Barnsley, and subsequently took over the Kirk Sandall Social Club, re-naming it the Ki Ki. Also on the bill was that quite laid back comedian Jimmy Marshall, well on form and as chipper as ever, Jimmy was always an original and inventive comic who never tried to copy anyone else’s style, and he was extremely well appreciated that night. www.theclubmansguide.co.uk
