The Coleshill Post

Charity marks a 25% surge in crime information given anonymously by people in Warwickshire Independent charity Crimestoppers has received a record number of reports from the public in Warwickshire over the last 12 months, as more people than ever before step up to speak out safely about crime. From April 2016 to March 2017, the Crimestoppers’ UK Contact Centre – which is staffed by professionals - handled over 1,000 Warwickshire-related reports, a 25% increase on the previous 12 months. Crimestoppers encourages people to pass on information about crime 100% anonymously by calling 0800 555 111 or using our non-traceable online form at crimestoppers-uk.org Pauline Hadley, West Midlands Regional Manager for Crimestoppers charity, said: “This is the first time in our charity’s history that we have been able to give the police over a thousand pieces of information - all anonymised – from the Warwickshire area. This all helps to make our communities safer.

“This huge increase shows that the Crimestoppers’ message is getting through to people who want to make a difference in their local communities. “Many of those who contacted us hold the key in terms of information, but are too scared or worried to take action and talk directly to the police. Because Crimestoppers gives them the chance to report information 100% anonymously, and without fear of being identified in any way, they are now coming forward in increasing numbers and we are seeing the results. Just one piece of information can make all the difference.” The highest number of reports received by Crimestoppers from people in Warwickshire over the past year related to drugs, drink or disqualified drivers, possession of weapons and sexual offences. The figures were released as the charity appeals for new volunteers who can spare two or three hours a week. Whilst this is a

Coleshill WI July meeting “Who were the first people to build canals?” This was the opening question from our speaker Barry Watson who entertained us with his talk on the rich history of Britain’s canals and waterways and his own experiences running a hotel boat. The Romans were the first canal-builders and the Bridgwater canal carrying coal into Manchester was the first to be built in Britain in 1761, at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution when Josiah Wedgwood also used them to carry chinaware, pottery and supplies between ports including Stoke, Manchester and Burton-on-Trent. Barry himself ran popular hotel boat holidays, like floating house parties, for a number of years aboard his narrow-boat Caernarfon which pulled a ‘butty’, the Conwy, on waterways across England, including the Grand Union and Stratford canals. The boats were each 70 feet long and carried 8 guests and 4 crew members, the Conwy containing the bar, galley, dining room and lounge, while the crew quarters and guest cabins were aboard the motorised Caernarfon. Barry described the routine of provisioning the boats for the entire week, getting up at 6 each morning, cycling to the nearest newsagent to buy newspapers for the guests then returning to deliver tea and papers to each cabin before breakfast at 8.30 and starting the day’s voyage at 9.30. His wife Pam performed miracles in the tiny galley, turning out home-cooked meals including afternoon tea and a 4-course dinner at 7pm each evening. The guests enjoyed visiting canalside pubs en route and Barry also entertained them with tales of the historic waterways and folk songs - especially canal songs – accompanying himself on his guitar and collection of harmonicas. He gave our members a taste of these entertainments, getting them all singing a specially composed song called ‘Falling in the Water’. Barry judged our competition for a holiday souvenir and its story, which was won by Gill Tyers for her romantic love-spoon carved from a single block of wood. We had a refreshment stall at Coleshill Carnival and were delighted that all our home-baked cakes and biscuits sold out within a couple of hours, (literally) like hot cakes. Early in August we held a successful cheese and wine party at the Town Hall with a flower-arranging demonstration by President Elaine Partridge and the chance for members to create similar arrangements. At our meeting on September 12th at 7.30pm John and Annette Christophers, will speak on the history of potting and show us how to produce some eye-catching clay models. The competition is Barry Watson, canal expert and hotel boater, leading for a member’s photograph representing Coleshill. members in a singsong of ‘Falling in the Water’. Visitors welcome as always.

Warwickshire, said: “Our volunteers work on the ground and live in the community. They play a vital role in connecting the work of the national charity at local level. “The position will particularly appeal to anyone who has a few hours to spare each week and a desire to give back to the community. local councillor Dave Reilly discusses plans to create an intergraded network of cycle paths that link our communities.

I have a confession to make. I love cycling, but this year I have not been able to drag myself out and onto the road. I feel really annoyed with myself. As well as being good fun, the physical and mental health and wellbeing benefits of regular exercise are now widely recognised. Cycling is right up there as an antidote to problems caused by being overweight and sedentary and but also the mental health challenges linked to isolation and loneliness. To top it all cycling is a relatively cheap, environmentally friendly way to commute to school and work, or even just get about. This is all very good, but our problem locally is that there aren't any dedicated cycle routes that can take us safely off the main roads. It’s time to do something about it. On the back of HS2 and other commercial developments we currently have a great opportunity to create a safe integrated network of cycle and walking routes that not only link our communities to each other, but also to local leisure and wildlife centres like Kingsbury Water Park and Middleton Hall Lakes, as well as to

key employment sites like Hams Hall, Station Road and the integrated transport hubs at Coleshill Parkway and Water Orton train stations. As a first piece of work I am overseeing initial reviews looking at current cycle route provision at both North Warwickshire Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council. I am also pleased to report that I have been appointed WCC Lead Councillor for footpaths, cycle ways and bridleways. At NWBC we would very much like to hear your views about the current North Warwickshire Cycle Way. We are hoping to re-vamp the route and its facilities and we want the views of current users, potential new users, residents and local businesses to help shape the route and hopefully even offer support with the project. You can find out more and give us your views at the following web page. Please do tell us what you think. https://www.northwarks.gov.uk/info/20081/sports_clubs_and_groups/1430/cycle_routes_in_ north_warwickshire Highways England have a £175 million national fund to improve safe cycling and we need to be bidding for some of it. Since November I have been asking Sustrans, an influential national cycle strategy group, to come to North Warwickshire to see how we can help link our communities directly to their national route network, and it’s great news that they have now agreed to join us. I have also agreed with our local Parish Councils that we will make a joint bid to the HS2 Community Benefit Fund to pay for planning work that we can then use to develop into cycle path construction projects by working with local authorities, HS2 contractors and local developers as part of their community infrastructure levies. Tame Valley Wetland Partnership are also on board and have agreed to look at cycling as part of the excellent work they are doing to enhance public access to the Tame Valley. The wheels are rolling! The increasing availability of electronic bikes is something we really need to embrace locally. Why shouldn't North Warwickshire be the first community in the country to have a network of charging points and facilities at key locations like shopping areas, train stations or the Water Park. Offering the use of electric bikes will be a great way of helping our ageing population to keep fit and active and keep up with the grandchildren on a family ride! I have already discussed a network of integrated routes with some residents in Water Orton, Curdworth and Coleshill and there is great support for the idea. If you would like to be involved and work with me on this project, or if you have any views you'd like to share, then please contact me at cllrreilly@warwickshire.gov.uk.

Town centre water work postponed Mains at The Coleshill seem cheap compared to the £650,000 investment by Severn Trent in 3.5km of new water mains around Coleshill. Work has finished in Coleshill apart from new mains for Coventry Road and the High Street. Originally due to be done first but postponed because of the likely effect on traffic, they were postponed until this summer, and now postponed again because of other roadworks taking place in the area. No start date has been agreed, and may slip into next year. Those affected will get a note when the date has been confirmed.

A Severn Trent spokesperson said: “We’ve now completed our work in Coleshill to replace the existing water pipes with brand new ones. The pipes have been serving customers for many years and were starting to become more prone to leaks and bursts, that’s why we took the decision to invest £650,000 in 3.5km of new pipes that will provide a reliable water supply for many years to come. “One section of the work along Coventry Road and High Street was postponed due to other roadworks taking place in the area, we don’t have a new start date for that work at this time.”

High Meadow Infant School celebrates joining Artsmark Award School recognised for its commitment to bringing the arts alive Pupils and staff at High Meadow Infant School are today celebrating after joining Artsmark Award; the Arts Council England’s award for schools that champion arts and culture in the classroom. In order to become an Artsmark School, High Meadow Infant School has demonstrated its commitment to giving each and every child a high quality art and cultural education, as well as showing ambitious plans for the future which it will now work towards with the support of Arts Connect. Artsmark schools gain access to exceptional resources as well as networks of the country’s most treasured cultural organisations, helping them develop and strengthen their arts provision. Commenting on receiving the award, Mrs Debby Hughes Head teacher said: “Our creative and engaging curriculum enables every child at our school to flourish and thrive. The children enjoy a rich range of arts based cultural experiences including working with the Royal Shakespeare Company, watching live theatre performances at Warwick Arts Centre, working directly with artists and musicians and taking part in the National Gallery’s ‘Take One Picture’ showcase every year. Receiving this national award demonstrates our schools commitment to providing our children and staff with real experiences which truly enrich and enhance their learning journey” Congratulating the school on becoming an Artsmark School, Darren Henley, Chief Executive of Arts Council England, said: “I would like to congratulate High Meadow Infant School on joining Artsmark Award and welcome them into our growing family of Artsmark schools. To become an Artsmark School, High Meadow Infant School had to demonstrate its dedication to the arts. It has put together an ambitious plan which will ensure each of its pupils is given the opportunity to continue to explore and build a love of the arts that will remain with them as they go through adult life.”

Curdworth WI has enjoyed a great Summer and is now looking forward to the Autumn and Winter part of our Programme! After our wonderful June Show, where members exhibited their talents in floristry, baking, photography and so many crafts, such as knitting, sewing, crocheting and beadwork, we’ve enjoyed a puzzling quiz evening, with Bob & Dell Neill, looking at and trying to identify gadgets and implements from years past - would you recognise a pill maker or a goffering iron? Great fun, which we’d recommend to anyone looking for an entertaining evening! In August, choosing a day of lovely weather, we went to Curborough Craft Centre near Lichfield for a gardening talk by horticulturist Byron Lewis, a mine of information on all green things, who introduced us to new plants as well as reviving our interest in some

old favourites. We learned the best soils and positions to place our plants in to get the best results from them and how to plant our potatoes now to reap a harvest for Xmas dinner. After our ‘lecture’, which left us all keen to get to the garden centre to purchase some new additions for our plots, we had a tea, with delicious scones, jam and cream. A perfect end to the afternoon! Our September Meeting is always our Open Evening, when we like to show off our WI and invite along ladies, who have not yet joined WI. We members know what a great ladies’ club WI is and we want to ‘spread the word’. So we invited everyone to join us in Curdworth, with a welcome glass of wine at our ladies’ Pampering Evening, featuring stalls with lovely clothes, jewellery and handbags, as well as handcrafted furry animals and special handmade cards. There was a hairdresser to demonstrate the latest

trends and some visitors went home very happy with a new style. And for those of us who love natural beauty products, our on hand beautician, demonstrated the latest in natural make-up products. One of the highlights of the evening was a relaxing massage and many members and visitors took taking full advantage of a quiet few minutes! A great evening was enjoyed by all! We’re now looking forward to our October Trivial Pursuit Quiz – one of the village highlights of the year and to our November Barn Dance and then it will be our Xmas Party and the Group Carol Service and the end of another great year at Curdworth. We’re a great WI – why not come and join us? For further info on us and our events – look at our website www.curdworthwi.co.uk or give me a call Liz 01675 481412 / 07811 147728

Coleshill United Church Sunday August 13th at 2.30 On Sunday August 13th at 2.30 a good crowd came together in the church to celebrate the Life of Dr Jack Stuart. They represented many of the societies and clubs with which he had been associated over the years.

The church itself was very dear to his heart. He helped support them during a difficult period where they had to raise thousands of pounds to clear the dry rot in the place. The pews had to go and also the organ. Eventually the church was repaired and the pews replaced by comfortable chairs and a carpet. He had attended the church regularly after Coleshill Congregational Church closed and joined with the Methodist Church to become the Coleshill United Church. In fact he was attending until a few weeks before he passed away. He found a wooden cross in his garden and mounted it upon a block of wood, seen here on the pulpit. He originally brought it every Easter but it has now found a permanent home in the church. He was very keen on Coleshill Churches Together and was part of the team ‘Open The Book’ formed from that group who regularly went into primary school re-enacting stories from the bible. He was very community minded. A story from Sue Wallace related that he had suggested to her that she joined the Town Council. He

had no desire to l be on the council himself but suggested it to others. His wife Bena was encouraged to stand for Borough and County councils in addition to the town. He supported her in all she did. At least three others were guided to put up for election to be on the council, they all won a seat and four new people joined the council who did not think at all about politics. Just followed Jack’s philosophy of doing the best for the community. Jack was involved in the formation of the Civic Society and campaigned against the M6Toll which led him to meet Swampy and go down to parliament. He was the instigator of all the Civic Societies exhibitions and events. He enjoyed appearing in a red wig and kilt in roles as far reaching as ancient Briton and country yokel. He branched out to form Heart Throbs, Natural History, Family History, Heritage Group, always finding someone else to take the lead in whatever he founded. The Georgian project was a notable success, here he was Lord Nelson, appearing in very elegant naval costume. The day went very smoothly due to the work of his able lieutenant G Assinder. A book was produced which caused some headaches. Each chapter was written by volunteers. Some inevitably dropped out and if Jack considered that topic to be important to the book, he wrote it. The Gardening Club was a thriving club. He was involved for years. Holding garden parties and opening his garden on many occasions. He organised Coleshill Open gardens for Coleshill in Bloom, persuading the members to open their own gardens. He realised that, from his view as a GP, many people in the community struggled due to physical handicaps, so he founded The Fellowship of the Handicapped. This group ran for many years until, after he retired from the surgery, the number of people who were referred dried up and the club closed. After he retired he joined the Drama Group along with his friend, Maurice Noble, they were responsible for many props used in productions. He also appeared in a number of productions. He founded the Friends of the Drama Group where members paid to join the group and guaranteed attendance at plays. He managed to recruit almost one hundred people thus providing a constant audience.

He decided that money for equipment was required by the Orthopaedic Hospital and came up with Coleshill and District Travel Society, C.A.T.S, a scheme where coach was hired to take people on 2/3 day holidays. A surcharge was put on the individual cost and the profits for the trip given to the hospital. Several thousand pounds were raised in this way. Jack had divided loyalties. He had a cottage Cae Top which was on a hill side over looking the Dovey estuary. A beautiful place. He organised work parties to visit, in the pretence of having a holiday but during the stay the grass had to be cut, hedges tidied, any maintenance to be carried out and wood had to be collected from the woods or drift wood from the beach. On the trip down a visit to the Co-op in Machynlleth had to be made to stock up on Welsh produce to eat on the stay. He loved the site and of course, each morning, a list had to be made for the jobs which were to be carried out that day. Jack had many trips with the Jubilee Sailing Trust on the Lord Nelson a tall square rigged sailing ship, used to take both disabled and able bodied people sailing. On his early trips he was ships doctor. His last trip, he must have been at least 85 and before he went he stated that he would climb the mast. He was told not to be silly. He did climb it and there is a photo to prove Dr Jack Stuart has made such a difference to so many aspects of Coleshill Life that his church, Coleshill United Church, would like to produce a booklet of memories which would illustrate the life of Jack in the town. Depending upon the number submitted this could be published. If anyone has anything they would like to record or that they consider memorable about the life of Jack. Please write it out and pop it through the door of the United Church, 2 Coventry Road, Coleshill, B46 3BE and write Jack Stuart on the envelope. Alternatively email the piece to coleshillunitedchurch@gmail.com

Coleshill based PLOTT Creative, are proud to have supported community festival ‘Family Fest ‘17’. The charity event was held at Sutton Rugby Club and the fun filled weekend raised an amazing £7000 for Midlands Air Ambulance. The 2-day event is now in its third successive year and has grown from strength to strength. Family Fest relies entirely on the support of local businesses and community volunteers. Its ethos is to provide great family entertainment whilst raising funds for charity. From the stage donated by a local haulage company, to headline sponsor John Shepherd, prizes donated by the Bierkeller and design services donated by PLOTT – lots of local companies pull together to make this event such a success. It was also a great opportunity for PLOTT to invite all the members of Business B46 network event to the festival for their annual August Summer Social, which proved a huge hit, and provided the perfect location for more ‘relaxed’ networking. The festival had a great atmosphere and featured music by Andy Bennett from Ocean Colour Scene, a full funfair, prosecco tent, street food market; along with Jedi Training, an entertaining Dad Dancing competition and on-site camping.

RESIDENTS

As PLOTT Creative is an energetic creative and digital agency, who deliver memorable brand experiences, Family Fest is the perfect event to showcase their talents. PLOTT worked with the organisers from the start to design and build a recognisable event brand which attracts more people every year. PLOTT’s Managing Director, Anna Plotnek said ‘It was a fantastic event and one we’re proud to be associated with, it’s great to see all our hard work and planning come to life.’ Anna continues, ‘as a small business it can be difficult finding time to support charities but this is such a worthwhile cause that we’re delighted to be involved.’ Anna concluded ‘We love festivals, so it was an easy decision to get involved. We had so much fun along the way and can’t wait for the next event.’ Anthony Levelle, Family Fest Chief Organiser said ‘The event gets bigger each year and we’d like to thank PLOTT, our other sponsors and all the volunteers for their amazing support. Their kind acts enable us to donate as much money as possible to the Midlands Air Ambulance. It’s been a phenomenal success and we’re already planning for 2018."

Problems with reading?? If you’re aged over 40 and are starting to have difficulty with reading, then you are probably suffering from presbyopia. This condition is caused by the natural aging process of your eyes, which affects their ability to focus easily on close objects. The result is blurred vision or tired eyes, especially when reading in poor light.

Presbyopia affects nearly everyone by their mid 40’s, but fortunately there are effective solutions for this condition. For example, if you have needed vision correction before, you may now just require reading glasses for close up work. But if you already wear spectacles, then you have several choices. You may decide to have different glasses for distance and reading, although this can be inconvenient. Or you may choose a pair that

performs both functions, such as bifocals or varifocals (progressive) spectacles. Varifocals cost a bit more, but are increasingly popular because they enable you to focus at all distances and they don’t have any obvious dividing line across the lens like bifocals. Presbyopia may not be a problem even if you wear contact lenses. There are now progressive contact lenses available for presbyopia, while some people find they can see well with a distance vision contact lens in one eye and a reading lens in their other eye. Others successfully use reading glasses over their contact lenses for close up. The best option will depend on your optical prescription and lifestyle. Your optician will discuss these with you when advising on the most suitable lenses for presbyopia. For further information on presbyopia, call Ellis Opticians on 0121 747 2115

Pots for Posterity

On 1 September, Sue Lappin and Denise Fisher of Coleshill and District U3A presented two planted pots to Orchard Blythe care home. Annette and John Christophers of Albrighton Pottery made the pots as part of their talk and demonstration to the U3A in mid July. The potters invited each member of the audience to make a clay plaquette (a small plaque decorated with low relief sculptures in bronze or other materials) comprising a base decorated with the first letter of the member’s forename and a representation of his or her hobby. They then transformed a number of these into two large clay bowls. After the firing process, undertaken at the pottery, Annette and John returned the bowls to Denise, who then planted them with lavender and winter flowering pansies. In true community spirit, the U3A decided the pots should find a home in the gardens of Orchard Blythe, where their unique character can be appreciated for years to come. Sue Lappin and Denise Fisher hand over the pots to Chris Cowell and Carl Thomas

High Meadow Infant School Expansion Plans Warwickshire County Council have announced a consultation into the plans to turn High Meadow Infant School into a Junior school for 5-11 year olds. The plans can be viewed online here - https:// askwarks.wordpress.com/2017/09/06/consultationon-the-proposal-to-extend-the-age-range-andincrease-capacity-at-high-meadow-infant-school/ The total number of pupils would increase from 90 to 210 under the proposals with each year group having 30 pupils. The consultation asks for the views of parents and locals on the plans to expand the school but doesn’t yet cover the planning issues that will arise through extending the building. This will be dealt with separately through the planning application process. If the proposals go ahead, then pupils in year two who finish in summer 2019 would be able to continue

into the first year 3 class in September 2019. Local Councillor and former High Meadow pupil, Adam Farrell said; “I welcome this proposal to extend the school age range. High Meadow is a wonderful school, consistently rated outstanding by OFSTED. Extending the offer, it makes to our community by catering for pupils right through to secondary school is a positive step forward for the school and the town. “There will of course be issues specific to the extension of the building but that will have to go through the planning process. I’d be keen to see the school look at different entrance options, a drop off zone and parking on school grounds as well as other changes to help the residents of Norton Road, Bateman Road, Ennersdale and the other residential roads that surround the school. “I urge residents to respond to the consultation which closes on 6th October 2017.”

Make your miles count this September The British Red Cross are looking for people to pull on their trainers, strap on their Fitbit, and make their miles count this September. Miles for Refugees is a unique challenge. Participants chose a distance from 22 to 2,700 miles and then, throughout September, walk, swim, cycle or run to reach their target. Red Cross events team manager, Kerry Thomas, says: "Miles for Refugees is an event for everyone. Whether you are a marathon runner, a long-distance cyclist, someone who walks the dog each morning, or are trying to motivate yourself to go swimming more regularly, you can sign up and challenge yourself.” Entry to the event costs £10 with a sponsorship target of £100. All money raised from Miles for Refugees will support the Red Cross’ Family Reunion work. Each year, thousands of refugees are denied their right to a family life because of the complex nature of refugee family reunion. Trained Red Cross caseworkers guide refugees through the process; and can help with travel logistics and costs, ensuring that families are reunited quickly and safely. Alex Fraser, UK Director of Red Cross refugee services said: “At its heart, family reunion is about keeping loved ones together. But it is also a safe and legal route to protection that refugees can pursue in order to bring loved ones to the UK. Last year we reunited 2,000 people with their families. Taking part in Miles for Refugees could help us to reunite many more.” For more information and to register visit www.redcross.org.uk/miles

tired baskets By Julie Heenan Orchard Nurseries For some people their tubs and baskets are looking a bit tired and could do with refreshing. Why not replant with the cheerful winter pansies. Pansies are easy to grow , plant in fresh compost,

keep moist and remove dead flowers. They come in a choice of single colours or mixed. Bulbs can also be planted , such as dwarf tulips and narcissi and hyacinth in tubs and containers and also in mixed borders and places where not much else will grow. There is a much smaller choice of Autumn bedding than there is for summer, but also available are Bellis - a daisy flower, wallflower- ours are container grown,

2017 A Level And Level 3 BTEC Results from The Coleshill School We are delighted to announce another year of improved performance at Post 16. The hard work and dedication of our students has been rewarded. The whole school community can be proud of these results. Results are up in all performance measures. The number of students achieving the highest grades is particularly pleasing with almost a fifth of students achieving A*/A grades and 42% of all entries achieving A*-B grades. 100% of all A level and Vocational courses, completed in Year 13, were graded A*-E. These results have given our students the best chance for the next stage in their education or employment. The majority of our students have gained places in their first choice universities or colleges, with 30% attending Russell Group universities, whilst other students have secured quality apprenticeships. A number of students have also gone directly into employment. We wish all of our students the very best of luck in this next exciting phase of their lives and remind them that The Coleshill School is their school and they are always welcome to return. These examination results reflect the full spectrum of qualifications and our students have been the first to experience the new, more challenging, A Level courses. Senior appointments to drive automotive supplier growth Leading Automotive supplier Sertec has made two significant additions to its senior management team, bolstering the high level of expertise throughout the Company. Steve Dunn joins the Sertec Group Board as Engineering Production Director and Carol Henderson takes tenure as Senior Commercial Manager with immediate effect. Sertec’s dramatic growth in recent years has been evident throughout the industry, which in turn has benefited the Company by attracting experience and expertise to the fold. Joining from a major 1st Tier Body In White and Chassis manufacturer, Steve brings 37 years of Automotive experience in leadership, technical product development and process improvement. With the expansion of the business through both inward investment and acquisition, Sertec are delighted to have secured someone of Steve’s ability to lead the continued development of stamping processes and plant evolution. Group Managing Director Dave Steggles said “Having recently spent £16million in our new heavy stampings facility, we are very fortunate to have enlisted Steve, who brings with him the calibre and skills set essential to capitalising on our investment. Whilst he will concentrate on Heavy Stampings at our Coleshill factory, his experience in assessing and implementing new strategies and

processes will be of great benefit to the group as a whole, both within the UK and our European operations.” Carol Henderson joins Sertec from Covpress Assembly and brings with her 25 years of Automotive purchasing and new model experience. As Senior Commercial Manager, Carol will add further expertise to Sertec’s Body In White capability and will play an integral part in attracting new customers to the Group. “Carol has a wealth of engineering and commercial skills, which coupled with an extensive knowledge of the automotive industry, will add a new perspective to our commercial activities for a wider customer portfolio.” said Dave Steggles. These senior appointments demonstrate an investment in quality people, as well as plant and equipment across the Group. Since acquiring Wild Automotive twelve months ago, Sertec has shown commitment to each of the new factories with investment and senior management support. New factory layouts and plant additions have benefited the two Midlands sites, their site in Germany is basking in £1million worth of plant refurbishment and lighting upgrades and the Hungary operation is currently installing new presses and equipment to the value of £11 million over a two year period. Such investment is backed up with the current roll out of a new £1million strategic investment in OEM recognised ‘Industry 4’ manufacturing IT systems across the Group.

UK Central Detail Announced

By Adam Farrell

Over three years ago, I wrote an article for The Coleshill Post called ‘Meriden Garden City – We need a new vision for the future.’ It was based on the then draft proposal by Solihull Council to develop land around the new HS2 Station, the NEC and the Airport into a new housing development mixed with retail and office space.

Three years on and the proposals have been developed further, with concrete plans being put forward this month. The plans go much further than anyone imagined in 2013 when they were first announced. The project is predicted to last until the mid 2040’s and at that point, if things go as planned, the whole area will change, including North Warwickshire. If the plan is followed then they’ll be an expanded Birmingham Business Park (towards Coleshill), a vastly expanded airport (with the potential for some if not a lot of it to be in North Warwickshire), a new ‘Arden Cross’ development of retail, offices and housing starting at the edge of Stonebridge Island where the current Toby Carvery is as well as a new metro line going along the North Warwickshire boundary and into Birmingham Business Park. There are also proposals to combine the HS2 station with the airport terminal. In 2014, my article said “Rather than react with fear about this “new town”, we should seek more details so that we can assess its potential impact on Coleshill, good and bad. A new town a stone’s throw away with highly skilled and highly paid jobs may enable local people to live, work and spend locally. This column isn’t written in support of the new ‘Garden City’, it simply tries to raise important questions about the future of our town.”

Today, we have more detail and I don’t think it’s good for Coleshill or North Warwickshire. Not because a development of new transport links, highly paid jobs and new homes is a bad thing but because North Warwickshire has been dawdling along messing about with a local plan that seeks to destroy areas like Polesworth and Dordon without recognising the huge focus on the West Midlands conurbation, the growth corridors that exist and that are planned for the future. It’s almost like the Council has had its head in the sand for the last two years thinking this ‘Meriden Garden City’ or ‘UK Central’ as its now called, would just go away. The Borough and County Council’s delayed joining the new West Midlands Combined Authority, they missed out on the early talks, we’re not involved in the first devolution deal and despite being members of the organisation today, they still have no list of ‘asks’ for North Warwickshire. There’s no point being a member of the WMCA if we don’t get anything from it and we won’t get anything from it unless we ask! So this new development has the potential to harm North Warwickshire, particularly if the new runway goes ahead inside of our boundary, although this is thought to be decades away from happening (just look at how long it’s took for Heathrow to get the go ahead for its latest runway… 50 years) but it will be particularly

harmful if it happens on our doorstep and yet again we miss out on any of the benefits from it. We’re going to have a new metro line nearby but it will by-pass our Borough, we’re going to have a new settlement nearby but no homes from North Warwickshire’s ‘quota’ will be included, we’re going to have new companies, investment and jobs but our lack of engagement will mean we as a Council don’t have the key relationships and connections and our residents will therefore be behind the likes of Solihull, Birmingham and Coventry in the queue. In fact, North Warwickshire appears just twice in the whole document that announces the plans, the same amount of times as Bristol! Coleshill is just a stone’s throw away from the proposed UK Central but isn’t mentioned once in the proposal document. We’re in danger of getting all the harm from this proposal but none of the benefits. We need to engage in the process or we’ll be left behind and forgotten about.

Shustoke C. of E. Primary School Spending a penny at the 20p a pee automated toilets in Coleshill, Water Orton and Polesworth has cost north Warwickshire council tax payers £15.18 a go. Despite the fact that it can be a financial life-saver, only half of all mortgage holders have life cover, leaving millions exposed. As a nation, we still gravitate towards the dream of owning our own home. The number of television programmes and column inches devoted to the subject are testament to our continuing obsession. Yet our desire for bricks and mortar is not in step with our appetite for life cover, even though it could help our families keep

Buying a home is likely to be the biggest financial commitment we will ever make, so covering the mortgage debt should arguably go hand in hand with picking up the keys. But a report by Scottish Widows shows that 8.2 million people are leaving their families financially exposed by failing to have any cover in place.1 “None of us want to think about the worst, but our findings show that there are an alarming number of mortgage holders who are putting themselves at significant risk by failing to arrange cover for the unexpected,” says Johnny Timpson, protection specialist at Scottish Widows. “Many people believe that they’ll be able to rely

their heads above water if our lives were

on the state if the unforeseen happens, but recent cuts to welfare

unexpectedly turned upside down.

benefits are exacerbating their vulnerability.” The financial protection gap is even more worrying when you consider that millions of families rely on a sole breadwinner to keep their finances afloat. This problem is most acute for the selfemployed, whose families are disproportionately reliant on their income. Two thirds of self-employed workers’ households are reliant on one wage earner’s income, compared with 52% of the average population.2 However, it should be remembered that the loss of a stay-at-home parent can also be economically devastating. Couples should always take into account the value of any unpaid domestic work and other duties that would otherwise carry a cost, when arranging financial protection.

Extra cover While life insurance will pay out if you die, other forms of insurance can provide an income or lump sum if you can’t work due to illness or injury. According to Macmillan Cancer Support, four in five people with cancer are, on average, £570 a month worse off as a result of their diagnosis.3 Yet only a fifth of the UK’s mortgage holders have a critical illness policy, leaving many millions at risk of financial hardship if they were to become seriously ill.4 “Many [of those diagnosed with cancer] find themselves in serious financial difficulty and are forced to rely on improvised financial solutions, such as selling assets or borrowing from family members,” says Lynda Thomas, chief executive at Macmillan Cancer Support. “However, when people get the right help and support at the right time, they have a much better chance of coping with the financial impact of cancer.” The options for insuring against unforeseen events are vast, so if you’re unsure about which policy is right for you, it’s a good idea to get some financial advice. With the help of a specialist, you will be able to explore your options, determine how much protection you can afford, and find the best deals to meet your needs. Adapting to life after the loss of a loved one, or diagnosis of a serious illness, can be one of the heaviest emotional burdens our families can face. But by making the right choices while we are alive, we can help ensure that it doesn’t become a financial hardship as well.

A suitable joint-life policy, or separate single-life policy taken out by the stay-at-home spouse, could ensure that the death of a stay-athome spouse does not lead to major new childcare or housekeeping costs.

Water Orton Villager

The Coleshill Post - August/September 2017- Issue 47

Message from The Councillor The Coleshill Post

A message from Councillor Steve Stuart What makes a village nice to live in? What differentiates it from its neighbours? It’s something have been pondering over the past couple of months.

Although not on facebook myself, I have been shown the groups that relate to the village and it is interesting to see the points that people raise. There are concerns about crime, anti-social behaviour and parking. I am sure that other villages share all of these concerns to some extent or another and certainly they are not matters that we aspire to see more of to make our village the best place it can be to live or work or relax or raise a family. One thing that has struck me about Water Orton since I have moved here is the amount that some people do for the greater good of the village. We have a host of volunteers at a plethora of sports clubs, places of worship, the library, organising exhibitions, picking litter and the annual carnival amongst others. And

for each person we see at these places there is undoubtedly scores of others beavering away out of sight. The Parish Council too is made up of volunteers seeking to help administer certain aspects of the day to day running of the village as well as making representations on behalf of the village on matters of regional and national concern. At the monthly public meeting villagers are able to come and ask questions and the Councillors present will do their best to answer them. Often the question will have to be directed to another place, normally NWBC or WCC, as they lie outside the remit of the Parish Council. But others we will be able to help with, even if the answer may not always be to the immediate liking of the person raising it. However all are listened to and considered in the best way possible. One difficulty that is becoming increasingly apparent though is the amount of the limited

funds that are having to be spent purely on the upkeep of the greenspaces that we have to maintain. The play areas have been particularly blighted by acts of both deliberate and unconscious abusive action which have seen equipment taken out of use and then replaced or repaired at considerable cost. I am sure it would shock village residents the amount that has had to be spent in this area and the proportion of the limited budget that we have available that is allocated in this way. So I suppose like those that visit the Parish Council with a question I am dismayed and elated by the answer to my own query. What makes this village special? I think it is the number of volunteers that make Water Orton a better place to live. Unfortunately there are others who do not consider the impacts they are having when they act in such an irresponsible and selfish fashion. If you would like to help make Water Orton

a better place to be then I am sure there are opportunities at all of the places I listed earlier. Councillor Sue Kelley is also still seeking volunteers to run the Speedwatch campaign which aims enables residents to take a part in accurately measuring the speed of vehicles travelling through the village in partnership with the local police. Sue’s email is s.kelley788@ btinternet.com and I’m sure she’d love to hear from you. Also if you are one of those concerned on facebook about crime in the region there is a facebook page for the local neighbourhood watch at www.facebook.com/NWNHW If you have a question for the Parish Council meetings are on the last Wednesday of every month at 7.30 at the Pavilion on Openfield Croft. Enjoy the rest of the Summer Cllr Steve Stuart Water Orton Parish Council.

The Old Salts Rugby Club The new season kicks off on 2nd September with a North Midlands Shield cup match, away at Shrewsbury. The first league match follows on 9th September, away at Newcastle, Staffs. On 7th, the Club host Southam RFC in the first round of the RFU Cup. On the 23rd Salts visit Whitchurch, Salop for another away League match. President’s Day is arranged for 30th September and coincides with a home league match versus local rivals, Spartans RFC. Needless to say local spectators and supporters will be very welcome! The Club is making slow but steady progress with their relocation to the Coleshill Road/Vicarage

Lane site. They have secured conditional planning approval for the new development proposals and hope to complete land acquisition within the next month, this will be followed by an archaeological site survey to ensure we are not concealing buried treasure! Following this, trapping great crested newts on the new site will commence, in preparation for translocation to a new permanent ecological habitat situated along the southern boundary of the Vicarage Lane properties. The Club hope to be able to commence construction work on the relocation site in the Spring of 2018. In the meantime, there will be much disruption to normal Club activities at present site in Gilson Road as major gas main diversion works get underway. Much relocation planning and preparation activity is proceeding keeping the management team and committee all very busy!

Message from The Caretaker

As a caretaker I aim to facilitate everyone's needs such as opening/closing at required times as well as help with setting out/putting away tables & chairs to your requirements.

Promises. Promises. Promises! Water Orton’s plan to have a Village War Memorial in place is steadily building momentum with local companies and individuals giving their generous support. It is hoped that the ‘Lost Fifteen’ who gave their lives in World War 1 and 2, and who are honoured on plaques in the Parish Church and Methodist Church will, for the 100th anniversary of cessation of hostilities on 11th November 2018, be owned by the every adult and child who now enjoy the peace they gave up. Raising the funds to see the project come to fruition in such relatively short time is a shared challenge with a variety of ways for everyone to participate.

Following a great Quizz Night at the Cricket Club, the next fund-raiser is the ‘Auction of Promises’ at the Link on Saturday 23rd September, 7.30p.m. The list of current promises can be viewed on htts://www.facebook.com/ WaterOrtonWarMemorial. Exciting as these are, the evening will be another lively social occasion. Tickets are just £5 – available from Derek Sellers and include a glass of wine and selection of cheeses. Guests are asked to bring their own additional drinks. Tickets are also available for the Water Orton War Memorial Christmas Ball on Saturday 16th December – a great way to socialise before Christmas and support this village project. Please email Judy.macdonald99@gmail.com or ring 07914812509 for more details or to order tickets.

Water Orton Cricket Club is having a great season. We have 3 teams in the Warwickshire League and a thriving youth team section, over 90 children attending regular practice sessions on Friday evenings. The first team have performed really well and are top of Warwickshire League Division 1, having gained 297 points so far. The second team have found a difference, having been promoted for this season to Warwickshire League division 4. The third team, led by Luke Belcher are also doing really well and have managed to reach third place in their league, Warwickshire League Division 12 West. The Youth Teams have been doing great in their competitions, being supported by Luke Harding and Lee Brookes and some parents, although any extra help from the parents would be much appreciated. The weather has been great this year and has not overly affected the results. The teams are encouraged and supported by their Captain, Steve Murphy and the youth section is helped in their practice sessions by Luke Harding and Lee Brookes, who work very hard to enable local youngsters to learn a sport and teach them how to work within a team situation. We have many members supporting the cricketers, week in and week out, and have been treated to some great, exciting matches this year, several being left to the last over to get a result. Most of the help within the Club is provided by volunteers, for which the Club is very grateful, especially for the ladies who provide the teams with their teas. The Club also has several social events booked for the coming winter: 7th October Lionel Ritchie Tribute Night; 28th October Elvis Tribute Night; November Quiz Night; December 2nd Live Band “Out of Gas”; December 31st New Year’s Eve Party Night; January 2018 Gary Barlow Tribute Night; February 2018 Neil Diamond Tribute Night; March 2018 rod Stevens Tribute Night. Tickets can be purchased from Pete Coles or Paul Messenger, or ask at the bar, nearer the time of each event. The Cricket Club is also available for functions all year round being partially restricted at weekends during the cricket season but for further information on this contact Martin Crouch on 07516493290. The bar is open on Saturday afternoon when there is a cricket match, Friday evenings when the youth team are training, early evening from 6.00pm on Wednesdays and Sunday lunch time all through the year. For any further information please check out the Water Orton Cricket Club Facebook Page or contact Pete Coles (Chairman) or Steve Murphy (Club Captain). In 1935, Chad Varah, age 24, assistant curate of St Giles, Lincoln, conducted a funeral, his first service, for a fourteen-year-old girl. The girl had committed suicide because she had begun to menstruate and thought she had a sexually transmitted disease. Deeply moved by such ignorance, Varah vowed to encourage sex education and to help people who were contemplating suicide. In 1953, (now rector of St Stephen, Wallbrook, London) Reverend Varah instituted a ‘crisis hotline’ in the crypt of his church, with the stated aim that it would be an organisation ‘to befriend the suicidal and despairing’. It was literally one man with a phone. Following ‘The Samaritan Priest’ article in the Daily Mirror on 7 December 1953, the number of calls received by Reverend Varah increased substantially. To meet the demand he recruited the assistance of his parishioners. The name stuck. The Samaritans charity was born. The Samaritans are proactive nowadays. They visit schools and colleges and attend festivals and social events and have a presence in prisons.

Facts at a glance: •E dward Chad Varah was born on 12 November 1911, in Barton-upon-Humber, Lincolnshire. He died on 8 November 2007, age 95, in Basingstoke. •R everend Varah was director of the Central London branch of Samaritans until 1974 and president from 1974 to 1986. • Th e original ‘hotline’ number was MAN 9000 (for MANsion House). It received the first call on 2 November 1953. • The Samaritans charity is staffed totally by volunteers. • There are 201 branches throughout the UK and Ireland; 15 in the West Midlands. • In 2016, the Samaritans received 5.7 million ‘contacts’. • The Samaritans can be contacted on Freecall number 116123. In 2016, Coleshill U3A has assembled a programme not to be missed. Why not join us? It’s never too late to learn! The Coleshill Post - August/September 2017- Issue 47

The Coleshill Post

Many older drivers in the West Midlands concerned about loss of identity and independence if they have to stop driving, new survey reveals Independent Age Behind the Wheel guide launches to help older people More than two in five (41%) drivers aged 70 and over in the West Midlands say they would feel like they’d lost part of their identity if they were not able to drive. Meanwhile, for more than nine in 10 (96%) older drivers it would mean a loss of independence, and over three in five (61%) say they wouldn’t be able to spend as much time with family and friends. That’s according to a new survey by older people’s charity, Independent Age, to promote its new, free advice guide, Behind the Wheel: Tips for safe and confident driving in later life, launched today. Independent Age worked with RDF Television who produced 100 Year Old Driving School for ITV to offer tips and guidance to some of the nation’s oldest drivers.

Other key findings of the Censuswide poll of 2,003 drivers aged 70 and over in the UK found, in the West Midlands: • The top three things that older drivers use their cars for are: shopping (99%), visiting family and friends (90%) and going on day trips or visiting new places (75%). • A significant number of older drivers are relied on by other people: over a quarter (26%) of older drivers use their car for caring responsibilities such as driving friends or family to hospital visits or helping with shopping, and the same proportion (26%) drive grandchildren to and from school or extra-curricular activities.

• Three quarters (75%) of drivers aged 70 and over would feel reluctant to ask friends or family for lifts if they were no longer able to drive. • Almost nine in 10 (87%) older drivers say having a car is important to them because they like the freedom of being able to go where they want, when they want. According to the survey, drivers aged 70 and over in the West Midlands first started driving an average of 49 years ago, and more than three in five (61%) have been driving for more than 50 years. More than four in five (82%) older people in the West Midlands drive at least once every other day. Geoffrey, 93, from Ipswich, who is featured in ITV’s 100-year-old Driving School, says, “I have been driving since I was 18 and I would be lost without it. Driving means everything to me. It gives me freedom to go somewhere without asking anyone else to help. I couldn’t bear to be a burden on my family, saying, ‘Take me here, take me there.’ I would hate to have to ask and lose my independence.” There are almost five million people over the age of 70 who hold licences in the UK, with more than 100,000 of those over the age of 90. When a driver reaches the age of 70, they are required to renew their licence every three years by the DVLA. Janet Morrison, Chief Executive of Independent Age, comments, “For many older people in the West Midlands, being able to drive means so much more than just being able to get out-andabout. Whether it’s keeping in touch with family

and friends or continuing to do their shopping, driving can help maintain a sense of independence, and identity too. There are many benefits to continuing to drive into older age and, as long as they remain safe, older people should be able to continue driving for as long as they want to. It’s also vital that people who are no longer able to drive have access to information on the various options available for getting around without a car. Older people and their families who want to find more about driving in later life or options if they are no longer able to drive can order our free guide, Behind the Wheel.” Kevin Clinton, Head of Road Safety at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), says, “As we get older, changes in our fitness and eyesight can affect our ability to drive safely, but there are lots of things we can do to continue driving safely for as long as possible, such as taking regular driving assessments, planning when and where we drive to avoid situations we find difficult, taking advice from our GP, family and friends, or adapting our car.” The new, free guide is full of tips to help support older drivers, and provides information on alternatives if they decide to stop driving. Behind the Wheel provides information on topics such as staying safe and boosting confidence while driving, the law relating to older drivers and driving with medical conditions, and when

to think about stopping driving. The guide will be accompanied by online information for the families of older drivers around how to start difficult conversations about driving. Independent Age is one of the two charities who provided contributors for ITV’s 100-yearold Driving School, which will air at 9pm on Tuesdays from 12th September. The three-part series follows a group of drivers aged 90 and over who have volunteered to take a driving assessment with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA). Independent Age representatives attended the three regional hubs to talk to older drivers and their families participating in the programme about their experiences of driving, in research for the Behind the Wheel advice guide. Behind the Wheel is completely free to order and download from www.independentage.org/ driving-guide or can be ordered by calling 0800 319 6789. To make a donation or find out more about how you can support the work of Independent Age and help older people stay independent, please visit www.independentage.org.

Lucy Harmer, Director of Services at Independent Age, the older people’s charity, gives her expert tips on how to stay safe and confident when driving. The charity has launched a new, free advice guide, called Behind the Wheel: Tips for safe and confident driving in later life, which can be ordered for free via independentage.org or by calling 0800 319 6789. Independent Age worked with RDF Television who produced 100 Year Old Driving School for ITV to offer tips and guidance to some of the nation’s oldest drivers. Independent Age representatives attended the three regional hubs to talk to older drivers and their families participating in the programme about their experiences of driving, in research for Behind the Wheel.

1. Keep up driving skills – Unless you are medically unfit or unsafe to drive, you should be the one to decide when it’s time to stop driving. If you do want to keep driving, it’s important to drive regularly so that you don’t lose your skills and confidence behind the wheel, even if you only travel short distances each time. 2. Stay active – Exercising is important as it may help to reduce stiffness and keep the muscle strength you need to steer, change gear and twist your neck and body while driving. Exercise could also help keep your reflexes sharp – essential for reacting quickly to what’s happening on the road. 3. Have a health MOT – Talk to your GP about getting your health checked if you have any concerns or have recently been diagnosed with a new health condition. Getting help early could help keep you on the road safely for longer. Make sure you are aware of any side-effects your medication could have.

8. Consider car adaptations – A wide range of simple adaptations can be made to a car, which may make driving easier and keep you safe and confident on the road for longer. For example, you could have a swivel seat put in to make it easier to get in and out of the car. Driving Mobility (www.drivingmobility.org.uk, 0800 559 3636) have assessment centres across the country where they can recommend adaptations to suit you, or give you tips to make driving a bit easier. 9. Change your car – If you can afford it, you may benefit from getting a new car. Many modern cars come with technology to help make driving easier, for example power steering, automatic gears and parking sensors. 10. If it’s time to stop… - If you do make the decision to stop driving, think about the other ways you’ll be able to get around without a car. Consider public transport or taxis, which could work out cheaper than running your own car if you mainly make local trips. You may also want to consider renting or buying a mobility scooter for short distances, which will allow you to stay independent. Make sure you receive all the benefits you are entitled to, which could help with the costs of getting around. Call Independent Age (0800 319 6789) to find out about a benefits check.

4. Test your eyes and ears – There are strict rules about eyesight, in particular, when it comes to driving, so make sure you have your sight and hearing checked regularly. If you’re over 60 you’re entitled to a free NHS eye test every two years. You may not notice changes that happen gradually so it’s important to have regular checkups. 5. Keep the DVLA informed – There are certain things that you need to let the DVLA know about, so make sure you inform them if you have certain health conditions or disabilities, such as epilepsy or a stroke; you buy or sell a car; or you make any changes to your current car. 6. Change your driving habits – You may find driving less tiring or stressful if you reduce the amount you drive or change your habits. For example, you could decide to avoid driving at busy times of day, avoid driving in bad weather or in the dark, or only drive short distances and on roads that you know well. 7. Get a professional opinion – A driver assessment can be a good way to get advice on how to improve your driving, and to reassure yourself and those around you that your driving is safe. You could also consider taking a refresher driving course. You can find a driver assessment or advanced driving course near you on olderdrivers.org.uk

The location is known: a prominent location in the High Street, opposite the Town Hall:

What piece of art placed here would be typical of Coleshill, tribute Coleshill or help put Coleshill on the tourist map?

There is a project group looking at delivering this project. It is led by the Town Council but supported by representatives from the Coleshill Post, Love Coleshill, the Coleshill Civic Society and the Parish Church. However, this is a project belonging to the town so residents, schools, voluntary organisations, media and business are all going to be encouraged to put forward ideas. Joshua Clashes with Pulev in Cardiff

Heavyweight King puts World crowns on the line on October 28

Anthony Joshua MBE will defend his World Heavyweight titles against Kubrat Pulev at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on October 28, live on Sky Sports Box Office. Joshua returns to the ring following his epic battle with Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium in April where the Brit added the WBA strap to his IBF belt in an enthralling contest with the future hall-of-fame legend, climbing off the canvas to record an 19th straight KO win in front of a record-breaking crowd in London. The unbeaten Olympic gold medal hero will now tackle his IBF mandatory Pulev, the Bulgarian rated number one in the IBF facing his second World title challenge having faced Klitschko for the IBF title in November 2014. ‘The Cobra’ became a two-time European

champion after the fight with a win over Dereck Chisora, and the 36 year old picked up and defended the WBA Inter-Continental title with wins over two former World title foes of ‘Dr Steelhammer’ in Samuel Peter and Kevin Johnson. “October 28 can't come soon enough, I have been eager to get back in the ring since Wembley and now we are confirmed and ready,” said Joshua. “I'll be locked away focusing on fight number 20 for the next eight weeks. I am excited to experience the atmosphere in a sold out Principality Stadium and aim to give the fans a spectacular night.” “Anthony is a formidable opponent,” said Pulev. “We will not hug and hold, we will not run; we will stand and fight. His style fits mine perfectly and in boxing, styles make fights. My preparation will be

very intense, and I will be perfectly ready when I enter the ring so that he will have no chance to beat me.” “I'm delighted that we will be in Cardiff at the magnificent Principality Stadium for the next step of the AJ journey,” said Joshua’s promoter Eddie Hearn. “Nearly 80,000 will gather on October 28 to create another unforgettable night of boxing. Anthony will meet his mandatory challenger, number one ranked Kubrat Pulev and the card will be stacked with World championship action, domestic title fights and the very best young stars in the game. Get ready for the next episode from the biggest star in World boxing.” “Anthony is a great champion and his last fight ignited the division,” said Pulev’s promoter Kalle Sauerland. “However, by his own admission, he is still learning and Pulev is not the sort of opponent you want to learn against. Kubrat and his train Uli Wegner – Europe’s most successful professional coach – have studied every weakness for the Cobra to strike victoriously.” Mark Williams, General Manager at Principality Stadium which is owned and operated by the Welsh Rugby Union, said: “Our national stadium is a true Heavyweight when it comes to bringing major events to Cardiff and today’s announcement strengthens our status as a year-round, multi-events arena, in the heart of a citycentre renowned for delivering a Welsh welcome to visitors from around the world. “This year we’ve hosted 400,000 plus visitors across UEFA Champions League Final, Speedway and the RBS Six Nations; two sell-out Coldplay gigs and Robbie Williams and Justin Bieber concerts. The Joshua-Pulev fight is guaranteed to another spectacle which, thanks to our Terraplas pitch covering, brings another world-class event to town two weeks before Wales’ Under Armour Series.” An announcement on ticket prices and on-sale dates will be made this week and the first undercard fights will be released in the coming days.

SMITH V WILLIAMS 2 Press Conference Quotes Former WBO Super-Welterweight World Champion Liam Smith and reigning British Champion Liam Williams became embroiled in a war of words at a press conference in Newcastle yesterday ahead of their highly-anticipated rematch at the Metro Radio Arena on Saturday 11th November, live on BT Sport and BoxNation.

Sam Evans and Owen Jobburn went to war on Saturday evening. The undefeated pair put on quite the show at the top of BCB Promotions’ ‘On The Edge', sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Walsall, at Walsall Football Club writes James Eley. Both fighters remain unbeaten but it was Jobburn who felt the more aggrieved following a 77-77 draw after eight absorbing rounds. The Stoke pugilist insisted he slipped in the third round when referee, Shaun Messer, scored it a knock down and the contentious decision has left everybody, both fighters included, calling for a re-match. Surely this time with a Midlands Area title on the line. Ricky Hatton trained Evans started the fight well, staying on the back foot and waiting for Jobburn to pounce before dodging and throwing sharp counter-punches. Things started to turn difficult for the 21-year-old in the third round as a clash of heads opened up a nasty cut on the top of his head which was pouring blood into his eyes. Evans still had enough vision to get close to his opponent and in the same round he threw a two-punch combination which sent the 28-year-old to the canvas. It was difficult to determine if either punch had landed and Jobburn immediately rose to his feet unfazed and blaming a slip as the result of the tumble.

Referee Shaun Messer had a different opinion and he awarded Evans the knockdown. There was a tear up in the fourth which Evans came out on top of and the exchange caused Jobburn to change tactics. The former soldier backed off and let his opponent apply the pressure before picking him off on the counter. Evans struggled to adapt and instead of working the jab to create an opening, he was impatient and rushed to the inside of Jobburn at every opportunity. The Wednesbury boxer spent the rest of the contest barging his way forward and unloading but he failed to land many clean shots. It was perhaps the final round that snatched victory away from

Jobburn. Evans’ pressure eventually broke through as he finally found a home for both his left and right hands with a succession of hooks which secured him the round to rescue a draw. It was a scintillating battle, which will no doubt happen again before the end of 2017. There were early nights for two of the undercard as Chad ‘2 Slick’ Sugden and Josh Stokes scored KO’s.

eye after a number of straight right hands. Harris was too open and throwing wildly and he paid the price in the second round. Jones first landed with a dizzying right hand which shook Harris, the 23-year-old then continued the assault with a flurry of punches but Harris came through the storm still standing. It wasn't long before Jones found the target again with his right hand and Harris did well to end the round without taking one knee.

‘2 Slick’ put in a perfect display and thoroughly outclassed Norbert Szekeres to record a first round stoppage. The 23-year-old from Newark cruised through the round, landing classy uppercuts and following through with left hooks. Szekeres couldn't land a single shot on the Newark fighter as he dodged and slipped before firing a brutal left hook which finished the Hungarian inside the first three minutes. Josh Stokes felt his way into the first round before crippling Raimonds Sniedze with the shot of the night to take all the fight out of him. Stokes landed the crushing overhead right just before the bell in the first round. The Latvian scrambled back to the corner after taking his time to rise to his feet from Stokes' monstrous power. Sniedze came out for the second and was instantly greeted by a punishing body blow which sent him back down to the canvas. The 25-year-old rose for the final time before the West Bromwich pugilist ended proceedings with another powerful right hand which sent Sniedze tumbling before Messer waved the fight off. The card was complete with two points victories for Chasetown’s Luke Jones and Irishman, Chris Blaney. Jones picked apart the defence of Andy Harris to record a 40-37 victory with a disciplined performance to get him back to winning ways. The Staffordshire boxer dominated the first round as he pinned his opponent to the corners and he left Harris with a cut by his left

‘Thunder’ enjoyed a mini resurgence at the start of the third but Jones' right hand was laser sighted and it didn't take long before he connected again. The round ended with a bombing overhead right from Jones which was followed up by more accurate shots to Harris' head. Jones' accuracy dipped in the final round but the fight was already won and he did more than enough to deserve the victory over the 34-year-old. Chris Blaney laboured to a 58-56 victory against the tough Anthony Fox in the opening fight of the night. The Irishman, trained by Ricky Hatton, did the cleaner work and occasionally showed flashes of his class with combinations and body shots. By the third round the ‘Ginja Ninja’ looked exhausted as Fox kept up the relentless pressure and he continued the work-rate for the full six rounds. Blaney was up against the ropes for most of the second half of the contest but he did just enough in return to come away dripping blood, but with a narrow win. BCB Promotions’ next two shows take place in Northampton and Walsall on the weekend of the 29th and 30th September. More details can be found at www.bcb-promotions.com.

Goodwin Boxing announce their association alongside Hayemaker Ringstar Promotions Wed 6th September 2017

Goodwin Boxing are proud to announce their association alongside Hayemaker Ringstar Promotions. Starting with the October 20th show from the O2 Indigo in London, headlined by Olympic silver medallist Joe Joyce taking on former British title challenger Ian Lewison in a 10 round bout, it is a chance to further cement Goodwin Boxing among the top tier of British boxing promoters. The show, run by Hayemaker Ringstar Promotions in association with Goodwin Boxing, will be broadcast live on the free-toair channel Dave, where David Haye has previously gained a significant audience share twice during his return in 2016. Having played a key part in providing the undercards for those events, a mutual respect was gained between the Hayemaker Ringstar team

and Goodwin Boxing that has led to the opportunity to take a more active involvement in the running of the October 20th show headlined by the debut of Joe Joyce. "We are over the moon to have formed this association" said Head of Goodwin Boxing, Steve Goodwin. "We've seen how Hayemaker and Ringstar have provided this platform for their fighters and were keen to be a part of it. It's an honour to work alongside David Haye and Richard Schaeffer to provide what we can definitively say will be a huge night for British boxing as they return the big nights to domestic audiences up and down the country on terrestrial TV" Steve went on to discuss the benefits that this partnership will bring for his own stable of fighters. "It's fantastic to be able to associate my boxers with the calibre of an Olympian like Joe Joyce. It gives those in my own stable a chance to showcase their fantastic abilities to a wider audience not just inside the O2 Indigo

on the night, but potentially to millions of fans at home watching. It is a sign of just how far we have come that we are able to provide such an opportunity while also playing a key part in the running of what will be a great show." The main event sees Joyce make his professional debut against a man in Ian Lewison who provides a stern test, one that very few Olympians would be willing to take on their first outing. A fantastic undercard will see John O'Donnell defend his English welterweight title against Tamuka Mucha in a fight that is also a final eliminator for the British title. Other fighters from Goodwin Boxing to feature on the show include Jordan Dennis, Tom Ansell, Nick Parpa, Duane Sinclair, Adi Burden and Luke Robinson. Tickets for the show can be purchased from the boxers directly or from the AXS website (www.axs.com).

Yafai defends WBA belt against Ishida in Cardiff

llesmere Port man vows to stop rival’s title dreams on September 30

Birmingham ace meets unbeaten Japanese mandatory on October 28 Kal Yafai will defend his WBA World Super-Flyweight title against unbeaten mandatory challenger Sho Ishida at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff on October 28, live on Sky Sports Box Office.

Paul Butler has vowed to end Stuart Hall’s career and take a huge step to becoming a two-time World champion when the pair meet in a WBA World Bantamweight title eliminator at the Echo Arena in Liverpool on Saturday September 30, live on Sky Sports. Butler took the IBF crown from Hall in June 2014 in Newcastle and their rematch gives the pair the chance to get into pole position to land a World title again – with a route to the WBA belt that's in the hands of Jamie McDonnell, who is set for his own rematch with Liborio Solis. The Ellesmere Port ace believes he’s got under Hall’s skin already having baited his social media last week, telling the Darlington man to “enjoy your last month training as a professional boxer,” with Hall blocking his rival on Twitter last night – and Butler says he’ll end their rivalry in emphatic fashion on Merseyside. “I’ll be putting it to bed and ending his career on September 30,” said Butler. “It was a great fight last time and I believe I can win in better fashion. It’s a fight I’m buzzing for. “It was man vs boy last time and I pinched it off him, now it’s man vs man this time – I’m a fully-fledged Bantamweight now. “I don’t believe he’s gone anywhere since the first fight and I’m learning every day under Joe, I’ve come on leaps and bounds. “This is my first fight with Eddie Hearn and he’s come up with the goods. The winner will be in a great position to fight either McDonnell or Solis.

“There’s light at the tunnel, it’s down to me now. Stuart Hall is in the way, I believe I’ll deal with him and then we’ll move onwards and upwards.” A stacked bill in support of the main event sees Liverpool's Rocky Fielding defend his British Super-Middleweight title for the first time against Scotsman David Brophy, who puts up the Commonwealth strap he won in fine fashion in Australia in March. Controversial Hackney man Ohara Davies looks to get back to winning ways as he challenges Tom Farrell for the unbeaten local favourite’s WBA International SuperLightweight belt. Birkenhead’s Sean ‘Masher’ Dodd defends his Commonwealth and WBC International Lightweight titles against former Team GB captain and Liverpudlian Tom Stalker. Two more Team GB Olympians Anthony Fowler and Natasha Jonas fight on home turf for the first time in their second fights in the paid ranks, and there’s also action for Craig Glover. Tickets are on general sale at www.echoarena. com and on 0844 8000 400 – with priced £40, £60 and £100. VIP tickets priced at £200 are exclusively available at www.matchroomboxing.com Face value tickets for September 30 are also be available from http://www.stubhub.co.uk/ matchroom-boxing-tickets/. StubHub is the official ticket partner and marketplace of Matchroom Boxing and Anthony Joshua.

Yafai puts his strap on the line for the second time having successfully seen off tough Japanese challenger Suguru Muranaka in Birmingham in May and it’s another test from the land of the rising sun that Yafai faces in Wales. Ishida brings a 24-0 record into his first World title fight, and the 26 year old will ask new questions of the champion standing four inches taller than Yafai at 5ft 8in. The former GB star has no doubts that he will keep the title he won against Luis Concepcion in December in style, and is ready to dazzle on the big stage. “It should be a great fight,” said Yafai. “We’re both undefeated and it looks an interesting one but it’s a fight I’m 100 per cent fully expecting to win and win in style. “We started camp about four weeks ago but I’ve been ticking over before that. We’ve been building up slowly but now we’re stepping up the intensity. “I’ve found some good videos of him and I’ve watched a couple of his fights already but over the next eight weeks, I’ll be studying them in more detail with my team. “He looks pretty tall. I think that’s his biggest attribute going for him. He’s busy with his jab and he seems comfortable on the back foot. We’ll see on October 28 if he does anything else but if he plans on using just his height and jab it won’t be enough to beat someone like me. “It will be the biggest crowd he’s boxed in front of, outside of Japan for the first time and in his first twelve rounder as well. But travelling away effects fighters in different ways. Just look at my last opponent, it was his first time outside of Japan and he loved it. He didn’t stop smiling.

“The win over Muranaka was good at times. There were things in the fight I didn’t do too well, which we’ve been working on. But that aside, we got the rounds in at a very high pace. The guy was tough, he took everything and fired back himself.” The Super-Flyweight division takes centrestage on Saturday night in California when Srisaket Sor Rungvisai meets Roman Gonzalez in a rematch for the WBA title and Naoya Inoue defends the WBO crown against Antonio Neves plus a WBC eliminator between Carlos Cuadras and Juan Estrada – and Yafai will be glued to Sky Sports in the early hours of Sunday morning to watch the men – and titles – he wants to grab with both hands next year. “I’m looking to box off my mandatory and then get in that mix,” said Yafai. “If we can bring one of those guys over to the U.K it would be great. I’m sure they see how boxing is booming over here. It’s a thriving division. “I’ve got Gonzalez winning on points. I thought he nicked the first fight by a round or two, but I think it’ll be quite convincing this time. “Inoue will win inside six rounds against Nieves. I don’t think that’s much of a test for him in all honesty. The Estrada vs. Cuadras fight is very interesting, I think Estrada might just edge that.” “This is a great fight and the toughest of Kal's career to date,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Ishida is highly rated and looking to follow his countryman Inoue to the World title. It's an incredible time for the division and these little men are becoming real stars of the sport – a win in Cardiff for Kal and its unification time in 2018.” Yafai’s clash with Ishida is the first fight to be added to the undercard of Heavyweight king Anthony Joshua MBE’s World title defence against IBF mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev. An announcement on ticket prices and on-sale dates will be made soon.

Joe Launchbury named as Wasps captain for 2017/18 England lock Joe Launchbury continues as Wasps’ captain for the 2017/18 season, having led the side to the Aviva Premiership Final in his first term. Launchbury passed the milestone of a century of appearances for Wasps last season and was an integral part of helping the club reach the Aviva Premiership Final and a European Champions Cup Quarter Final. The 44-time capped England international is entering his eighth season at Wasps, having joined from Worthing as a 19-year-old, in 2009, and has made 109 appearances for the club. Wasps' Director of Rugby Dai Young said: “Joe did a really good job for us last season and he will only get better the longer he does the role. He has become a natural leader around the place and has grown with the responsibility of being captain and a senior squad member. “Last year we worked to grow the leadership group and fans can expect other players to wear the captain’s armband again this season while Joe is on international duty, enabling players to understand what is required to lead the squad on and off the field. Great teams don’t only rely on one or two leaders, they have at least five or six and that’s what we want to continue to build here. “We’ve been fortunate to have had some fantastic captains during my time at Wasps with James Haskell, Matt Mullan, Chris Bell, Hugo Southwell and John Hart, and Launchers is the latest in that long line. As well as being an incredibly talented player, he has the respect of the entire squad and coaching staff and has really helped to drive standards.” Looking ahead to leading the club into the new season, Joe Launchbury said: “It’s a massive honour to have been named captain again for the 2017/18 season and something I am excited about. Wasps is a club I’ve been at for a long time now and I enjoyed the opportunity to play more of a leadership role last season. “We have a good leadership group within the squad and there is a lot of talent. We will all continue to work hard to try to improve in every area and to get the best out of each other. We’re all looking forward to the Aviva Premiership starting and our first game against Sale Sharks at the Ricoh Arena on the opening weekend of September.” Tickets for Wasps v Sale Sharks can be purchased from wasps. co.uk/tickets and start from £21 for adults, while under-10s go free in certain categories. The Wasps 150th anniversary shirt will be revealed on Tuesday 22nd August and go on sale at 9am on Wednesday 23rd August at the Club shop or online. The shirt can also be pre-ordered by visiting www.waspsshop.co.uk

Three charities to benefit from Wasps 150th anniversary season Wasps are proving that charity begins at home as they gear up to mark the club’s 150th anniversary. Dai Young’s men begin the Aviva Premiership season at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday, 2 September against Sale Sharks, marking the start of a season of celebration. The club has announced it is aiming to raise up to £150,000 for three official charity partners throughout the season, each of which will be given dedicated match days to fundraise. The charities include Dallaglio RugbyWorks – a programme set up by Lawrence Dallaglio to help disadvantaged 14 to 17-yearolds achieve sustained education, employment or training; Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice in Coventry, which provides palliative, respite and end-of-life care to infants; and SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity for veterans and their families. A two day, 150-mile bike ride between Twickenham and the Ricoh Arena is taking place to mark the club’s anniversary and raise funds for Dallaglio RugbyWorks, and will finish at the 150th Anniversary fixture between Wasps and Bath at the Ricoh Arena on Sunday, 1 October, where a variety of Wasps legends will be presented to the crowd. Throughout the season fans are also being given the chance to get their hands on a 150th anniversary book brimming with 240 pages of previously unseen information, photography and memorabilia. The first team squad will also be sporting a unique 150th anniversary shirt throughout the season, paying homage to the club’s heritage. Nick Eastwood, Wasps CEO, said: “This is set to be a season unlike any other off the pitch, and a lot of hard work has gone on behind the scenes over the past few months to make sure we celebrate the club’s past while also looking ahead to an exciting future.

“This season marks 150 years since Wasps was originally formed in the Eton and Middlesex Tavern pub in the Autumn of 1867, and since then, the club has evolved into first-class rugby club and powerful community asset. “The club has laid down permanent roots for a brighter future in Coventry and the wider Midlands through its community work, which is why we wanted to make fundraising a core part of our 150th year celebrations. “We have some 150-related surprises up our sleeves for supporters as the season progresses, so we’d urge people to watch this space.” Mick McCann is fundraising manager for Zoe’s Place Hospice in Ash Green, Coventry and has welcomed Wasps fundraising challenge. He added: “We are a charity that relies solely on donations from the public to keep us going, so to receive this kind of support from Wasps in what is a big year for them is invaluable for us. “Seeing big clubs and organisations such as Wasps helping local causes is what community is all about, and we can’t wait to attend the Gloucester game on 23 December to raise awareness of what we do.” Tickets for Wasps v Sale Sharks can be purchased from wasps. co.uk/tickets and start from £21 for adults, while under-10s go free in certain categories. The Wasps 150th anniversary shirt will be revealed on Tuesday 22nd August and go on sale at 9am on Wednesday 23rd August at the Club shop or online. The shirt can also be pre-ordered by visiting www.waspsshop. co.uk and the 150th anniversary book can be pre-ordered by visiting www.wasps150book.co.uk

Saturday 19th August

FA CUP Bromsgrove Sporting 3 v 4 Coleshill Toughest game of the season so far. Bromsgrove are among the favourites for the league title and Coleshill would have preferred to avoid them in the FA Cup. A seven goal thriller swung both ways as both sides went head to head. After Sporting took an early lead Coleshill went 2-1 up with goals from Matt Garner and an absolute stunner from Ryan Edmunds. Bromsgrove hit back to take a 3-2 lead and Town looked down and out. But this side never gives up! Ryan Edmunds won a penalty and Dean Rathbone converted and Liam Molesworth scored the winner in the dying minutes.

Reece Leek got his second before half time. In three second half minutes Quorn then Liam Molesworth scored to make it 4-2 before Quorn scored again in the last minute.

What a dull game on a Bank Holiday! Coleshill were 2-0 up by half time through Matt Gardner and Ryan Edmunds but Coleshill decided to take a back seat in the second half and never troubled the home keeper but defended well to keep a clean sheet.

went 2-1 up with goals from Rob Evans and Reece Leek but a City substitute scored twice to put them 3-2 up before youngster Sam Ford scored an equaliser in the 95th minute. After seven league games Coleshill sit at the top of the table, the only unbeaten side in the league. In truth the side have just been finding their feet and didn't play too well in the opening games but the last two games have been very impressive and there is more yet to come from this side. A freak fixture list means Town will play AWAY from home for nine games before they return to Pack Meadow on Monday 25th September against their oldest rivals Highgate United followed quickly by the visit of Heanor Town on Saturday 30th September. Please come along and watch your LOCAL non-league football team, you will be made welcome and you won't be disappointed. "Just Like Watching Coleshill."
