Cllr Adam Farrell

Town & Borough Councillor Coleshill North

A new ‘Garden Village’ for North Warwickshire?

There is a debate taking place at North Warwickshire Borough Council about housing. Most political parties agree we need more homes to solve the housing crisis in Britain. The difference in North Warwickshire is how and where we build them. The Conservative Council want to build 9700 new homes, mainly as an extension to Polesworth, Dordon, Atherstone, Ansley Common and Hartshill. It means that some of these areas will double in size over the next 15 years. Can you imagine the reaction of Coleshill residents if someone said we’re coming to dump 3000 new homes in the fields next to your town? They’d be uproar and rightly so. Labour believe that the only way to build 9700 homes sustainably, without having huge impacts on existing towns and villages is to build a new settlement. It is not a perfect solution but the only way to tackle the housing crisis is to build more homes and you can’t have everything – land or homes – you can’t have both.

So at a recent Full Council, Labour Councillors put forward our plan for delivering these new homes. Whilst we’re sceptical of the numbers, the process and the Governments overinvolvement in local planning – we do have to build new homes. Labour’s plan for a new settlement would see land at the A38, down past Moxall Hall Hotel and towards J9 M42 developed for housing and employment. The site would deliver around 5000 new homes, new schools, a new doctors surgery, new shops and highly paid jobs as the employment site joins with the Peddimore development – where research and development is a key component. Key to Labour’s proposal is for the A446 to be duelled along its entire route between Coleshill and the A38 although a new access from the A38 will be the main entry point to this new town. Transport to and from the site is of vital significance. Improving transport, public transport in this part of North Warwickshire would be a huge benefit for local people. It’s for this reason that the new settlement would have direct access to the new metro system that is being proposed for the other side of the A38.

GOODS VEHICLE OPERATOR'S LICENCE Design Craft Exhibitions Ltd of Unit 9 Roman Way, Coleshill, Birmingham B46 1HG. Is applying to change an existing licence as follows: To keep an extra 2 goods vehicles and 0 trailers at: Unit 9 Roman Way, Coleshill, Birmingham B46 1HG. Owners or occupiers of land (including buildings) near the operating centre who believe that their use or enjoyment of that land would be affected, should make written representations to the Traffic Commissioner at Hillcrest House, 386 Harehills Lane, Leeds, LS9 6NF, stating their reasons, within 21 days of this notice . Representors must at the same time send a copy of their representations to the applicant at the address given at the top of this notice. A guide to Making Representations is available from the Traffic Commissioner's Office.

At the moment, the Conservative Council are failing to engage with the rest of the West Midlands and all around us a new metro system is being developed that will enable you to travel from Coventry to Birmingham to Solihull and the Black Country. At the moment the plans show it running past North Warwickshire. Under the Tories, this lack of engagement will mean that yet again, our Borough will fail to reap the benefits of this new public transport. It will take us longer to get to any new station than it would to use the new transport to get to the intended destination. This new village would include new social housing and 40% of the site will be affordable. On a new settlement site like this – a council can buy the land and be in control of how the development progresses. It means we have much greater control over a site like Labour is proposing over a huge extension to an existing town or village where developers are in control. So this new site would be surrounded by green belt with a commitment for it not to grow beyond the current footprint. It would be surrounded by a green buffer inside the site and existing properties within the site would remain

and would be protected as much as practically possible. And the big issue – yes, it is currently green belt. But if we are to tackle the housing crisis, if we are to protect existing towns and villages like Coleshill and Water Orton, then we must build somewhere. Young people today, cannot get on the housing ladder. People are living at home until they are in their 30’s. This is simply not acceptable. So, yes the new village would be in the green belt but Labour will force a ‘green belt swap’ so that the new site would be surrounded by existing green belt, protecting it and surrounding villages from any sort of merger and we would swap the green belt built on at J9 M42 with J10 M42 to protect the remainder of North Warwickshire as well as Coleshill, Water Orton, Curdworth and all of the other parishes on this side of the Borough. If we want to protect land like Daw Mill, like the green belt surrounding Coleshill and Water Orton, then we must be bold and not allow developers to dictate where development takes place – a local plan that includes a new settlement is the only way to do this. Because we have to remember, it is the Conservatives who sought to build on Packington Lane, around existing homes and only Labour forced them to change course.

How to stay safe on the roads this winter As the nights draw in and the temperature starts to plummet, driving on the roads can become increasingly difficult and hazardous. To stay safe, it’s important to adjust your driving style according to the weather conditions, and carry out the necessary vehicle checks before you venture out. To coincide with Road Safety Week (20-26 November), Jonathan Allbones Director of leading car supermarket, The Car People, has put together his top tips and advice to help you tackle the big freeze from behind the wheel. Make sure your tyres are suitable for winter conditions Most UK cars are fitted with either summer or all-season tyres, however these tyres will not perform at their best in extremely cold conditions. Winter tyres are designed to be flexible in extreme cold, providing a better grip on snow and ice. Although not mandatory by law, they’re a great way to help keep you safe in icy conditions, especially in rural areas. Top up your coolant with antifreeze Most modern cars now come with a sealed cooling system that shouldn’t need topping up. The coolant should be a 50/50 split between water and anti-freeze, but this can dilute over time.

Fish and Chips

This can result in freezing and potential damage to the engine, so ensure your coolant is at the correct level before making any journeys during winter. It should always be between the ‘MAX’ and ‘MIN’ levels on the side of your expansion tank. Defrosting your windscreen If you’re a car owner, then you will no doubt dread having to defrost your windows before hitting the road on an early morning. The best and safest way to clear your windscreen is to use a scraper and de-icer. Starting the engine, switching on the heated rear screen and mirrors, and allowing air-conditioned air to circulate to gently warm the glass also helps speed up the process. Ensure you don’t leave your car on its own with the keys in the ignition, and double check that your windscreen and all windows are fully defrosted before you drive off. Get set for longer journeys Long journeys are very common during the festive season, as people drive far and wide to spend Christmas with family and friends. It’s important to plan your journey and be prepared for any adverse conditions that might make driving difficult. Check the weather, traffic news and safest routes before you begin your journey, and make sure you have warm clothes and food packed, should you break down.

Prepare a winter car breakdown kit Winter car breakdown kits are essential to carry in your boot during the colder months. A range of kits are available, with most including a high-vis vest, snow shovel, torch and thermal blankets. Other recommended items also include snow grips for your shoes, non-perishable food and drink supplies, and a phone charger, in case you break down. Check your breakdown cover Fully comprehensive breakdown cover is vital if you’re driving during the winter months, and will give you piece of mind that you won’t be stuck if you do break down. Before you venture out on the roads, double check exactly what you are covered for. Download a weather app Keeping on top of the weather conditions is vital during the winter months. Before you make a car journey, download a weather app to your phone and double check you won’t encounter any wintery conditions during your journey. If you think you might encounter particularly bad weather, it is worth postponing your trip until conditions have improved. Cllr Dave Reilly

North Warwickshire Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council

What does the New Year have in store ?

Let me start by wishing you a very Happy Christmas. In this month’s column I will give a brief update on the local issues I’m working on and look forward to what the New Year holds in store.

I’m pleased to report that the County Council has allocated £1.65 million pounds to build four new classrooms at High Meadow Infant School. This will support the growth of pupil numbers from 90 to 210 by 2020. The head teacher, Mrs Hughes, and School Governors are now hard at work looking at initial options for the school site and working with neighbouring residents and me to see how we can best design out the traffic and parking problems at school drop off and pick up times on Norton Road, Ennersdale Road and Rose Road. This expansion is great news as it means that children attending High Meadow, an Ofsted rated Outstanding School, will no longer have to leave after Year 2 as they do now, but can stay on at High Meadow until Year 6 when they will go straight to senior school. On the subject of new schools, plans for the new Water Orton Primary School that will be built on the new site on Plank Lane should be published early in the New Year. The legal agreement with HS2, who will be significantly funding the new build, will soon be ready for signing. As soon as I have any news I’ll let everyone know. I’m frustrated to hear reports that the Boy Racers have returned to the A446 and A38 at Bassetts Pole. You may remember that a couple of years ago we formed a problem-solving group whose membership included the Police, officers from the borough and county councils, our M.P Craig Tracey, and local councillors. The one key action we still must deliver is the court injunction that will prohibit gatherings and

related anti-social behaviour on our local main roads. We are still waiting for a court date for our application to be heard. I’ll refresh efforts and look to reform the problem-solving group if the Boy Racer problems continue. Thanks to everyone who attended the North Warwickshire Local Development Plan consultation meeting at Coleshill Town Hall on Monday 4 th December. We had a good turnout and were able to answer many of the concerns raised. The consultation will continue until 31 January so there is plenty of time if you want to give your views. If I can be of help please let me know. Speaking of consultations, I know many of you have asked about the engineering works taking place on the A446 at the Junction 4 island by Coleshill Heath Road. Highways England are building a huge works compound from which they will re-build the Junction 4 island to make it three lanes wide and do the ‘smart motorway’ improvements between junction 2 at Coventry and junction 4. When the roadworks finish in March 2020 the intention is that the improvements will deal with the congestion problems and improve traffic flow to the new HS2 Interchange Station that will be built at the Melbicks site. Highways England are holding an information event about the Smart Motorway project from 11 am until 7pm on Friday 15 December and from 10am until 4pm Saturday 16 December at Maxstoke Village Hall. Yes, I did say Maxstoke! I did point out that Maxstoke was somewhat out of the way and not accessible by anything other than car, but Highways England declined to change the venue. HS2 continues to gather momentum locally. Two significant events happened in November. Firstly, Craig Tracey M.P. brought the Under

Secretary of State for HS2, Paul Maynard, to our community and showed him first-hand the locations of proposed HS2 works that we know are going to cause problems and that we are unhappy with. I met Mr Maynard and asked for help to engage local communities in the design and planning processes for the HS2 track M42 overbridges at Water Orton and Coleshill. I also raised significant concerns I have about lorry movements through Water Orton and the building of more HS2 contractor works compounds in Coleshill, Water Orton and Curdworth that have not previously been detailed in any published plans by HS2. Mr Maynard has committed to see how he can help. I also attended two very useful meetings between all the businesses on Hams Hall and HS2. We had initial discussions about HGV lorry parking on and off site and the associated road safety problems and anti-social behaviour by the drivers. I have a commitment from all the businesses that attended to revisit the HGV parking problem at our next meeting in February to start looking for a solution. I am concerned about the amount of HS2 HGV construction traffic that will use our local roads and the fact that there are no proper rest areas locally. All HGV drivers are lawfully required to take rest breaks after every 4 hours 30 minutes of driving. This additional HS2 HGV traffic means we will have a critical problem when it is combined with the existing HGV traffic from Coleshill and Curdworth Industrial Estates and Hams Hall. So, what’s in store for January? Well, I have a couple of interesting projects on the go. I’m meeting with the regional lead for Highways England about the unacceptably high rates of killed and serious injury road accidents in Warwickshire. We will be starting with a focus

the A5 and I will push to extend this to include the M6 and M42 locally. To try and get a grip of the consistent and valid local complaints about overgrown hedges and vegetation on local footpaths and roads I am now set on commissioning a Lengthsman to work across Coleshill, Water Orton and Curdworth. Hopefully starting in early 2018 this will mean that I’ll be able to get work done far quicker than has been the case and I’ll be able to maintain it once it's cut back. I’m continuing with the cycle routes work. Warwickshire Wildlife Trust are now working with me together with officers from the two councils and local parishes, and I will getting a public meeting organised in February to get local ideas and hopefully involvement and support. Finally, with my fellow parish councillors in Lea Marston we will I hope be taking ownership of Hams Hall Environment Centre and the local woodlands on the back of a planning application to build on the old Power Station B Site on Hams Hall. I am really excited about the good environmental protection work we can continue to do to with Tame Valley Wetlands Partnership to create a new local publically accessible nature reserve and to rebuild the ‘green’ services the site can offer as a local school and community education centre. If I can be of any help please email me at cllrreilly@warwickshire.gov.uk or ring me on 07770704617. In closing, I just wanted to say what a fantastic Christmas market event the Love Coleshill team put on for the switching on the Christmas lights. It was great to see the High Street alive with people all having a good time. I certainly came away feeling rather Christmassy! And on that note, Happy Christmas to you and your family, and here’s to a healthy and prosperous 2018.

Shelter issues warning ahead of critical Christmas season, as free helpline receives a call from West Midlands every 5 minutes Shocking new figures show Shelter received a call for help from the West Midlands every 5 minutes in the run up to Christmas last year, and the charity is warning that the situation this winter could be set to get worse. New research from Shelter and M&S shows that in 2016 the charity’s national helpline received nearly nine thousand calls from the West Midlands in the two months leading into Christmas. And crippling combination of rising homelessness, sky-high rents, problems with Universal Credit and a dearth of affordable homes means this winter the charity is preparing for huge numbers of people struggling with homelessness and housing problems to come to them for support.

And with calls from people in the West Midlands to the free Shelter helpline increasing by 26% over the past year, their expert advisers are overwhelmed with pleas for housing help. The Shelter helpline is funded by M&S customers throughout the festive season, with 5% of every purchase made from the ‘Festive Collection for Shelter’ going directly to the charity. This means the helpline can offer housing advice and support every single day of the year for people battling bad housing and homelessness. Mark Cook, a helpline adviser for Shelter, said: “Every Christmas I speak to parents in despair as they face the trauma of homelessness, when they should be filling stockings and looking forward to Christmas dinner. “Even though I’ll be working at Christmas, I think myself so lucky to be able to go

home at the end of the day when there are so many families having to go without such a basic need. “No family should face the agony of losing the roof over their heads, which is why we’re calling on people to get their lunch from M&S’s Festive Collection for Shelter. Something as simple as buying a sandwich could make the world of difference to a family whose home is on the line this Christmas.” Mike Barry, Plan A Director at M&S, said: “We know our customers care about this issue and purchasing lunch from our Festive Collection for Shelter is a small, simple way they can make a big difference this Christmas. With calls to the Shelter helpline increasing by 25% over the past year it’s more important than ever we support this important cause.”

The Company of the Curtain The Company of the Curtain is the local drama group that originated in Water Orton and now performs at Curdworth Village Hall.

This year the Company celebrated their 80th anniversary with the final performance of the year being a play called The Ghost Train. This play was first performed by the Company in 1937. All the performances of this latest play were played to full houses, and the Company is very grateful for the local support. To celebrate the 80th anniversary the Company held a Revue party, including a buffet supper arranged by some of the members, at Curdworth Village Hall. Other members of the Company entertained the rest of us to sketches, a monologue, solo songs and duets. We also had a performance from ARTS, the stage school based at Curdworth and 3 songs from local solo artiste Isabelle Florence. This was a wonderful way to celebrate the 80 years of the Company and was made even more special by the attendance of our Guest of Honour Mrs Blanche Hunt, who has been a member of the Company for over 70 years. She told us that after she saw that first performance

in 1937 she decided that she wanted to join the Company, which she did. She now lives in Somerset but made the journey back to Water Orton with her son Andrew and her daughter-in-law for the special day. Andrew also sang for us some songs with special meaning to his family. To keep the Company up to the standard that is expected takes a lot of hard work backstage, on stage and front of house. If anyone feels that they would like to experience live theatre, either performing or helping with scenery, operating the technical desk for the lighting and sound production, publicity, or being a general dogsbody!!! you would be very welcome. For further information please contact the Company via info@companyofthecurtain.com We are now looking forward to a new year of productions of The Company of the Curtain. The first play will take place at Curdworth Village Hall, 6th – 10th February 2018. It will be a play called “A Tomb With A View” which is a comedy concerning the reading of a will. Tickets will be available nearer the time through the website, www.companyofthecurtain.com or by telephoning the box office on 01675 463095. We would love to see you all there.

Are you aware of what will be taking place in the Coleshill area in the next 20 years? Our next meeting will take place in January, Thursday January 11th at 7.30pm in the Old Market Hall, Church Hill. Councillor David Reilly will talk about how he sees Coleshill changing over the next 20/30 years. This will inevitably mean discussion of effects of HS2 and its station, the new town between Solihull and the airport, possible third runway for the airport and more developments to the north as a result of the northern extension of HS2.

How many remember the A446, the dual carriage way being built, the war came and tanks were parked on one of the carriageways. Chelmsley Wood being built, M6, M42 M6toll all being built over the last 60 years. Those changes will be as nothing compared with the changes in the next 20 years. Come along to the Old Market Hall on January 11th and hear what David Reilly has to say. He is very aware of what is scheduled, how it will affect the town and if there is anything which we could do to ease the pain.

It will be joined by 30 real trees at the church's tree festival from 15-17 December, and will star in all the events in church until Epiphany in January.

Coleshill Primary School About Coleshill Chess Club Arconic garden refurb A big thank you to Arconic for their generous help in refurbishing our school garden! A team from the local manufacturer based in Kitts Green spent a week this autumn hard at work to revamp a peaceful corner of the school grounds. More used to working with metal and solving complex engineering challenges that transform the way we fly, drive, build and power, the team from Arconic have constructed a new wooden pergola, raised beds and footpath at the top of the school playing field.

The team will return in the spring to help the children with the planting. Head teacher Mr Andrew Kershaw said, “We are very lucky to have such a large outside space for our growing school, and we are so pleased that Arconic have been able to donate their time and resources as part of their community outreach programme to help us make the most of it.” Gez Thacker from Arconic said, “We like to create links with our local communities and know that the refurbishment of this space will give the children further access to a range of learning experiences outside the classroom.”

Coleshill Chess Club was founded on 4th May 2016 following a meeting at the Coleshill Social Club. Decisions were made to enter a team into each of the Birmingham & District Chess League and the Cannock & District Chess League. The club finished a creditable fifth equal in a thirteen team Division 6 of the Birmingham League and reached the second round of the Townshend Trophy where they lost to Solihull from Division 4. Despite finishing fourth in a four team Cannock League, valuable experience was gained by several players who were new to league chess or returning after an absence of many years. The highlight of the initial season was the winning of the Division 6 Individual Trophy by Paul Barrett. Three players also represented Warwickshire in the Inter County Chess Tournament and finished as runners up to Leicestershire in the final. An influx of new members for the 2017/2018 season resulted in the club entering two team into the Birmingham League Division 6 comprising twelve teams and a team in the Cannock League that had expanded to five teams. The "A" team currently lies third in the league with the "B" team occupying ninth spot. The club gained revenge over Solihull from Division 4 with a crushing victory by 6½ to 1in the first round of the Townshend Trophy but interest in the competition again finished in the second round with a narrow defeat by 3½ to 4 by Division 4 Walsall Kipping. Only one game has been played in the Cannock League this being an away defeat to Norton Canes by 1 - 3. The club is always on the lookout for potential new members, whether this be experienced club players or those looking to play league chess. We also cater for beginners or those wishing to play a social game. We meet every Wednesday at the Coleshill Social Club from 7:30 pm. For further information please contact the club secretary Des Green on 07736 066825 or 0121 246 2295

Gardening tips for November:

Christmas tree care By Julie Heenan Orchard Nurseries To get the best out of a real tree, cut a slither off the base of the trunk to freshen the cut , then use a tub that can be watered into , and water every other day especially if in a warm room. Try to place away from radiators and fires. Hyacinths are a popular Christmas bulb, they are best placed in a cool position and kept just moist. Support flowers heads if necessary with a short cane. Christmas cacti are east to care for, just keep out of direct sunlight, water when dry and keep pot bound. Cyclamen also prefer a cool position, water sparingly and remove dead flowers to encourage more.

£1,000 Christmas Wish Coleshill & District U3A “Size four, miss? for Coleshill’s Most How many pairs? ‘Bah Humbug’ Local Two every day?”

A national jeweller is bringing the magic back to Christmas with a ‘Wish-mas Tree’ that will make festive wishes come true for Coleshill’s most ‘Bah Humbug’ local.

Beaverbrooks has launched the wishing tree after finding that 46% of people felt the magic of Christmas had gone, admitting they no longer look forward to the festive season. A shocking 30% went as far to say they would like to cancel Christmas altogether – even if it was only for one year. Off the back of the findings, the familyowned jewellers wanted to restore Coleshill’s faith in the festive season, by bringing the magic back to Christmas for one lucky resident. Locals will be encouraged to submit their seasonal wishes online, with one deserving winner receiving £1,000 to help make their wish come true. Anna Blackburn, CEO of Beaverbrooks, said: “Christmas is our favourite time of year here at Beaverbrooks. It’s the one time of year where friends and family can all come together and share special, magical

moments, so we were surprised to hear that the magic had gone for so many people. “We wanted to try and bring back some seasonal cheer for those un-festive individuals, and what better way than with an enchanted Christmas tree that can make your wishes come true? “Whether it’s a big family get-together, a special trip with a loved one, or that dream watch or piece of jewellery you’ve had your eye on – we hope we can spread some seasonal joy to local people and make their Christmas magical. “We can’t wait to hear what people in Coleshill wish for!” To be in with a chance of receiving £1,000, locals need to submit their Christmas wish online at www.beaverbrooks.co.uk/ make-christmas-magical by Thursday 7 December. In keeping with the spirit of Christmas, Beaverbrooks will be closing its 71 stores on Boxing Day so that team members can spend quality time with their loved ones – a tradition the family-owned jewellers is proud to have maintained throughout its 98-year history.

On 20 September, Jessica Armson recounted the history and daily workings of Birmingham Royal Ballet. Birmingham Royal Ballet was founded in 1931 in Islington, London. Originally known as the Vic-Wells Ballet, it performed both at Sadler's Wells Theatre and the Old Vic Theatre. In 1990, the ballet company relocated to Birmingham and was renamed the Birmingham Royal Ballet. The company has extensive facilities, comprising a suite of dance studios and the Jerwood Centre for the Prevention and Treatment of Dance Injuries. The company’s Dance Track programme is about developing six to eightyear-olds who otherwise might not have the opportunity to dance. Elmshurst Ballet School provides ballet training for eleven to nineteen-year-olds. In addition the company runs Freefall Dance, a company for gifted dancers with severe learning disabilities.

Facts at a glance: • Birmingham Royal Ballet is one of two ballet companies with a royal charter bestowed in 1956. • Ballet has one of the smallest repertoires of all the performing arts. •A pair of ballet shoes costs in the region of £72. • A typical day for the dancers consists of 1 1/4 hours of company dance class followed by two rehearsals of up to 3 hours duration. In 2018, Coleshill U3A has assembled a programme not to be missed. Why not join us? It’s never too late to learn! Squares To Remember In the summer of 2015, Coleshill Town Council’s Coleshill Remembers Committee decided that, along with vigils and other events held to honour the fallen of the First World War, they would aim for a permanent memorial. The committee planned to create either a wall hanging or an altar cloth to be used yearly on the occasion of the Remembrance Service. The committee requested local groups and organisations to create squares measuring 20cms by 20cms. Among others, this generated a response from Coleshill School’s Art Department and Coleshill and District U3A’s Fabrics and Woolcrafts Group. All the squares were delivered to the Town Hall during the autumn of 2015. The following autumn, the committee handed all the squares to the Fabrics and Woolcrafts Group. The group agreed to produce either a wall hanging or altar fronts by the time the 2017 Remembrance Service arrived.

The group realised it had sufficient squares to create an altar front for the St Peter and St Paul’s Lady Chapel using those from Coleshill School. The excess squares would make an altar front for the main altar. A design was chosen with a cross of poppies at its centre, the remainder of the squares arranged around it. Archival research had revealed that 142 men of the town and surrounding villages had made the supreme sacrifice, so it was decided to have one poppy commemorate the sacrifice of each of man. The group purchased poppies from the British Legion to complete the design. The poppies were taken apart to lighten them for attachment to the altar front. The work took 2 hours every week for the best part of 3 months, after which the fronts were delivered to the church. At 11a.m. on 11 November, the altar fronts were installed. Reverend Nick Parker dedicated them as part of the Remembrance Service. They will remain in place until the beginning of Advent.

Coleshill Town Lights Up for Christmas The 30th November is going to be one to remember, Coleshill town was buzzing with Christmas cheer and excited children waiting to visit the most important person of the night Santa Clause. The excitement didn’t end there as the crowds gathered for the big switch on of Coleshill Town Lights. Shops were filled with customers and the market stalls were a fabulous addition to this year’s event. None of this would have been possible of it wasn’t for the generosity of the people of Coleshill who gave their time to make it such a success. Special mention

Hi my name is Akeera. I am a typical husky, Who is very energetic and happy to see everyone.

Ben is our older residient here at Birmingham, But do not let that put you off.

Eugene is a little timid until he gets to know you, So will need a family to help build his confidence.

I must be walked on a harness as I pull so much on a lead and make myself sick!

This stunning lad knows a few basic commands, He does pull a little on the lead so would be better on a harness.

Once this stunnning lad knows you he is very affectionate and loves his fuss and cuddles.

It is best I go out with no children as I am not keen on anyone coming by my bowl.

We feel a quieter home would suit Ben as he is looking for a peaceful place to call his own.

Eugene is not sure of his basic commands, So would benefit from dog training classes.

When I go to new family I will need someone with time to continue with my training.

Please call our Birmingham Centre, if you can offer Ben a forever home.

Please call our Birimgham Centre, if you can offer Eugene a forever home.

I would like no dogs in my new home but I can walk by them and will say 'hello' too. Please call the Birmingham Centre, if you can offer me a forever home.

Hello my name is Isabella, when I first arrived at the home, I was very sad as I had a bad injury to my leg. My K9 carer's and the vets did everything they could to save my leg, but unfortunately they had to amputate it as it wasn?t healing properly. I am so much happier now with three legs and it has not stopped me doing anything a dog with four legs can do as I still love to run around. If possible I would like an active home as I have a lot of engery to burn off and I would love to go on lots of adventures. Sometimes I am a little cheeky with my toys so I would prefer a home with older children. Please come and see me out if could offer me that forever home I dream off.

McIntyre: Working party on reform will help EU stay together and relevant Reforming the European Union is the best way to keep it together post-Brexit. That was the message today from Conservative MEP Anthea McIntyre as she welcomed plans for a task force to bring greater focus to EU legislation. It will aim to improve the lawmaking process so that the block does less - but does it better. Miss McIntyre, who chairs a Task Force on Better Regulation for the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR) in the Parliament, said the move was: "Music to the ears of anyone who wants to see EU regulation only where appropriate and proportionate." The task force was promised in Commission President Jean-Claude Junker's State of the Union speech. It will start its work in January, chaired by Frans Timmermans, Commission First Vice-President in charge of Better Regulation, it has been announced.

Anti-hate group hears of unknown Muslim soldiers The untold story of the millions of Muslims who fought for the Allies in World War One was revealed to members of the West Midlands Together campaign.

The organisations’s steering group, meeting in Birmingham, heard from Hayyan Bhabha, Director of The Muslim Experience in WW1, about his researchers’ discovery of the unknown scale of the contribution Muslims made in the 1914-18 conflict. He said more than 2.5 million Muslim troops fought for the Allies in the various campaigns.

West Midlands Together was formed as a crossparty campaign for harmony and tolerance in the wake of a spike in hate crime following the EU referendum. Joint founder Anthea McIntyre MEP, Conservative MEP for the West Midlands, said: “This information is so powerful. “It shows extent to which we all have shared backgrounds and that we have so much more to bring us together than to keep us apart.” Mr Bhabba said the project was the first to ask for access to WW1 documents in the Farsi, Arabic, Urdu and Hebrew languages from 377 locations in 19 countries. He said research had unearthed many fascinating stories about the war service of people from a range of faiths.

He said: “These stories can be a very powerful tool in showing young people from different religious and ethnic backgrounds that this is their country and their families are part of its heritage and history.” The group has begun organising interfaith trips to the battlefields and war graves of northern France. Mr Bhabha said the All Party Parliamentary Group of British Muslims, of which he is secretary, will also be working with colleagues to establish consensus in finding a definition of Islamophobia that the Group hopes the Government will adopt. He said: “We recognise that Brexit has emboldened people to express hatred of anyone they deem to be different from the norm.” Nasar Iqbal of We Stand United, an initiative against hate crime in Walsall, spoke of his organisation’s work in inviting people to come forward with their experiences. He said these accounts would be shared via text and video on social media, with viewers asked to comment and add their own stories. Mr Iqbal also spoke of plans to launch a Hate Crime Network in Walsall to allow a variety of agencies concerned with and affected by hate crime to work more closely together.

The task force will be composed of nine additional members, with three members from national parliaments, three from the European Parliament and three from the Committee of the Regions. Miss McIntyre, who represents the West Midlands and is Conservative employment spokesman said: "We are very hopeful that as the parliament's third-largest group the ECR will have one of the European Parliament places on the task force. "This can only be seen as a positive move and one which will counter the impression that the EU wants to interfere anywhere and everywhere. By allowing that perception, the EU has alienated many ordinary citizens across Europe including those who voted Leave in Britain. "If it is to win back that lost confidence, regain its relevance and keep its integrity and unity, the EU must fix its tendency to legislate to widely, too loosely, and too readily."

ADVERTISING FEATURE December 2017

Autumn Budget 2017 The chancellor has delivered his first Autumn Budget. This focused heavily on the wider economic position for the country, with a number of positive initiatives targeted at the housing market. There were no significant changes that affect mainstream investments or pensions. Taxation

From April 2018, the personal allowance will increase to £11,850, with the basic rate tax band of £34,500; higher rate tax threshold will be £46,350. The starting rate tax band remains at £5,000 for savings income. The rates of income tax remain unchanged. The government intends to publish a consultation in 2018 on how to make the taxation of trusts simpler, fairer, and more transparent. The government will also consult on the tightening of IR35 provisions for contractors and may extend what they have done in the public sector to the private sector.

Corporation tax – indexation allowance for capital gains for corporates will be frozen from 1 January 2018, although indexation relief will continue to apply for disposals after 22 November until 31 December 2017. We are currently working through the implications of this and will provide an update in due course. Capital Gains Tax – the Capital Gains Tax annual exemption will increase to £11,700, and the annual exemption generally available to trustees will increase to £5,850 from April 2018. Inheritance Tax – the government has commissioned, and received, research to understand the motivations, behaviours and attitudes underlying decisions made by individuals on Inheritance Tax matters and the use of reliefs and exemptions in that process.

Pensions

Despite significant speculation that there would be changes that might adversely affect pensions, there has been no change made to tax relief on pension contributions or the Annual Allowance. The increase in the Lifetime Allowance in April 2018 to £1,030,000 (in line with September’s Consumer Prices Index (CPI) rate) has been confirmed. The rates for full single tier state pension has been confirmed as £164.35 (£4.80 increase). The basic state pension will increase by 3% to £125.97.

ISAs

The ISA annual subscription limit for 2018-19 will remain unchanged at £20,000. The annual subscription limit for Junior ISAs and Child Trust Funds for 2018-19 will be increase in line with CPI to £4,260.

where the tax relief provides most of the return for an investor with limited risk to the original investment. The condition depends on taking a ‘reasonable’ view as to whether an investment has been structured to provide a minimal risk return for investors. In addition, the chancellor also announced the annual limit for individuals investing in knowledge-intensive companies under the EIS will be increased to £2 million, provided that anything above £1 million is invested in knowledge-intensive companies. Technical details on this will follow over the coming weeks and we will provide you with further information when more details are announced. Please note that these investments are suitable only for experienced, sophisticated or high net worth investors who accept that they may get back significantly less than the original investment. These represent a much higher risk than investing in larger well established listed companies listed on the FTSE All Share Index and are inherently more illiquid.

Stamp duty

The government announced that it will exempt firsttime buyers from Stamp Duty Land Tax on properties up to £300,000; this exemption is also available for the first £300,000 on properties up to £500,000. This is effective from today (22 November). The value of an investment with St. James’s Place will be directly linked to the performance of the funds selected and may fall as well as rise. You may get back less than the amount invested. The levels and bases of taxation, and reliefs from taxation, can change at any time and are dependent on individual circumstances.

Water Orton Villager

December 2017

Message from The Chair Person

Hello everyone. Compliments of the Season Just a short one this time. I want to thank everyone who assists the Parish Council to do their work. The last three months for various reasons have been very demanding and challenging for everyone and a number of people have spent their own time and effort to ensure the Parish Council can continue to function as it should. A big thank you for your efforts. Water Orton will be facing huge challenges in the coming years, namely HS2 and the circling of property developers who would like to increase the size of the village by more than one hundred and fifty houses. I believe HS2 are now showing their

true colours, as, at the November Parish Council Meeting councillors were told of broken promises made by them. The Parish Council will monitor their behaviour and will on behalf of villagers challenge anything that we believe will be detremental to the village. At the November Parish Council Meeting we asked Councillor David Reilly to offer an invite to the Headmaster of the local school to attend the January Parish Council Meeting (last Wedneday of the month) and so enable him to give an update on the plans for the new school. Ralph Coldrick Chair of the Water Orton Parish Council

Water Orton & District Tennis Club Water Orton & District Tennis Club have just completed their 8th season since moving into the village back in 2009. Membership increases year on year but there are still a few places for new members, especially adults, either established players, beginners or improvers. We are an inclusive community sports club that prides ourselves on providing a warm welcome for all ages and all abilities. Our volunteer coaches are there to help and whatever you want be it social tennis or league tennis we can provide it for you. Our junior coaching sessions are there from the age of 5 years upwards. Adult beginners groups are run on Tuesday evenings from 6pm until 8pm. Our season starts at the end of March each year and we are currently busy finalising our new 21 year lease and fundraising to install new floodlights and resurface our courts.

Our coaches visit several local junior schools each week and we also welcome during school time youngsters with learning difficulties from The Woodlands and Forest Oak schools. These children really enjoy their weekly visits and as a local club we are really proud that we can play our part in helping these youngsters enjoy our sport. If you would like more information you can either visit our club website clubspark/ Water Orton & District Tennis Club or e-mail our secretary Paul Messenger on secretary@waterortontc.org,uk All our members are registered with the LTA which enables you to go in the Wimbledon Ballot draw and covers your insurance as a member. You can have your own key to the court and as a member book on line, turn up and play. Our tennis club offer you a great way to keep fit, make new friends and enjoy a good local social programme. You will be made very welcome so come and give it a go.

The Old Salts Rugby Club Relocation Progress with the Club’s relocation to Coleshill Road/Vicarage Lane/Gypsy Lane, Water Orton continues slowly. The main planning issues have been resolved. A Legal Agreement between HS2 and the Club should be signed before the year end, this will release Treasury finance for purchase of the relocation site land and enable a start with detail design of the relocation development. In the meantime, an archaeological trenching survey will commence on the site in January, 2018. As soon as the warmer weather arrives in March or April, 2018, work will commence with the creation of a new habitat for the local colony of great crested newts, this work is subject to oversight by Natural England and will be managed by the Club’s ecological consultants.

A contract for construction of the development, comprising new clubhouse, car park, access roads, playing fields and landscape work is programmed to commence in July, 2018 with completion by April, 2020. This programme would permit occupation of the new premises in time for commencement of the 2020/2021 rugby season. The Club will be forced to vacate their existing premises in Gilson Road at the end of the current season in May, 2018. Cadent Gas will take over the grounds at this time and begin major diversion of infrastructure gas mains necessary due to the HS2 Rail Link. Thereafter, unfortunately, the Club will be unable to continue their occupation of the existing premises. The Club’s Committee are currently searching for suitable alternative temporary accommodation and facilities. The Club anticipate a period of disturbed activity ahead during the next two years.

The perfect gift Red carpet event at for green fingers coleshill town hall! this Christmas

On Friday 8th December, 32 Year 11 students from The Coleshill School were invited to a red carpet Awards Evening at the Coleshill Town Hall.

The students were nominated by their teachers for their constant and sustained commitment to their school work and to school life in general. To congratulate them on their success, each student received a personalised plaque Tony Battle, Coleshill Town Mayor, presented the awards to the students in front of their very proud parents and family members Mr Smith-Childs, Headteacher commented “We are so proud of our talented Year 11 students. They all deserve recognition for their hard work and commitment in this extremely important academic year working towards their GCSE exams in the summer.” Mrs Bishop, Head of Year 11, said “We would like to express our gratitude to Plott Creative, Coleshill Mortgage Services, The Red Lion and Platinum Decorating for sponsoring this wonderful event.”

Forget struggling for gift ideas for the green fingered amongst your loved ones this Christmas and treat them to a gift they’ll love; a super-stylish LECHUZA plant pot. LECHUZA makes self-watering plant pots with a sub-irrigation watering system which means your plants will be able to stand the test of time. The integrated water reservoir supplies the plant with the right amount of water for optimal health and growth – all you need to do is water regularly for up to 12 weeks to allow the roots to establish themselves. Once established the LECHUZA pot takes over and a handy indicator lets you know when the water is running low and it’s time for a top up. Whether your loved ones are more outdoor gardeners or prefer creating their own indoor jungle, there’s a LECHUZA plant pot of everyone. The new CUBETO Color bowl planter provides room for creative floral arrangements and makes creative planting easy thanks to its flat shape. A LECHUZA plant pot is not just perfect for gardening lovers but also for those who have struggled to grow plants in the past. And with LECHUZA, even young children can successfully grow their own plants! Jamie Dickinson, LECHUZA Marketing Manager, said: “It’s not always easy to cultivate your own plants, especially when you’re trying to look after more than one variety at the same time. Thanks to the self-irrigation system of LECHUZA each plant gets the exact amount of water it needs to flourish.” For more information, to see the whole range of products available or to purchase a LECHUZA product visit www.lechuza.co.uk

Angie is set to kick fad diets into touch A slimmer who transformed her life by giving up yo yo diets and finding Slimming World is using her success to shape a whole new career helping other people change their lives and achieve their weight loss dreams too.

Angie joined her local Slimming World group in Coleshill after hearing about the group and dropped 2 stone to reach her target. Angie has now trained as a Consultant for Slimming World, the UK’s largest group-based weight loss organisation, at their national training academy in Derbyshire. Now she is opening her own group in Water Orton at The Link on Wednesday 3rd January at 7.30pm. The latest government figures reveal that around one in four adults are obese and it is estimated that, by 2034, this will increase to one in three, and Angie knows her new role has never been more important. She says: “Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight but now I just can’t wait to get started. After losing 2st and completing my training, it’s a privilege for me to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members the support they need to get to target. No matter how much weight you have to lose, its all about gaining the life you want. “Support is really the most important thing. It all starts with feeling that you’re not alone. I couldn’t have lost weight without the weekly help, encouragement and understanding of my own Consultant and group. As someone who has lost weight myself I know the challenges people can face, which is why, along with the group, I will be there to support every one of my members all the way to their chosen target

BEFORE

weight. Setting targets, sharing recipes and other ideas and working together as a group to overcome challenges and celebrate success is so important to a successful journey. That’s why, at my Slimming World group, there’ll be tons of support, encouragement and fun. “Like a lot of slimmer’s, I had tried to lose weight so many times before by following numerous diets but they were never sustainable because I’d always get tired of restricting what I ate. I thought I was destined to struggle with my weight for the rest of my life, but when I came to Slimming World it was different. I never felt like I was on a diet. The eating plan encourages you to eat lots of tasty, filling foods like pasta, rice, potatoes and lean meat and fish, you are never hungry and no foods are banned so there’s no deprivation. I couldn’t believe I’d found a way to lose weight without starving myself. “Slimming World isn’t just about changing what you eat. Becoming more active is important too. Our Body Magic programme takes the threat out of activity by showing people, many of whom have unpleasant memories of being forced to take part in activity at school, how they can build activity into their daily routine without having to take up traditional forms of exercise like going to the gym or running. Everything counts from walking to gardening to washing the car. My boys love Rugby, as a family its our passion, and I needed to do something to get fitter and healthier and feel like I could keep up with them. The first thing I decided to do was kick these fad diets into touch and embrace healthy eating. When I walked into Slimming World that first night I knew that this was what I’d been looking for. It wasn’t a diet it was a lifestyle change, and here I’d learn how. The support from the group was amazing, and I couldn’t wait to get started! As a Consultant it’s my role to create a warm, supportive atmosphere in my own group, to get

AFTER

people sharing their ideas and experiences to help others - it’s going to be great fun!” Like Angie, Slimming World Consultants are all former members who have lost weight at their local group themselves and new groups are then set up in the heart of local communities. Consultants receive training in Slimming World’s healthy eating and physical activity programmes and learn how to use the power of group support to empower members to take control of their own weight loss journey. Angie says she can’t wait for the new challenges running her own group will bring. I feel like I’ve got a brand new career and I can’t wait for my new groups to run now! Toni Russell, who runs Slimming World’s Coleshill group and manages Angie as a Team Developer, says: “Slimming World Consultants

are chosen for their positive outlook and because they genuinely care about the health and happiness of others. With Angie’s experience of being a successful Slimming World member and her kind and warm personality and great sense of humour I just know that she’ll be an amazing support to members, cheering them all the way to their target weight.” Angie’s Slimming World group will be held at THE LINK, 4 NEW ROAD, WATER ORTON, B46 1QU every WEDNESDAY at 7.30PM from 3RD JANUARY 2018. For more information or to join Angie’s group either pop along on opening night or call her on 07443 565571. Or: For more information visit www.slimmingworld.co.uk or call 0344 897 8000.

Ellis Opticians I previously went to one of the larger opticians and had terrible problems with the glasses they gave me. I suffered with headaches and the glasses weren’t even fitted to me properly. A friend of mine suggested to go to see the optician Shabbir at Ellis Opticians. Going to Ellis Opticians was the best choice I made. The staff there were excellent, I received personal service, a thorough eye examination and some glasses which I am very happy with. Thankyou to Shabbir and staff at Ellis Opticians, I wouldn’t go anywhere else again! Mrs H G

How to Get Your Kids to Sleep the Night Before Christmas

Professor Colin Espie, world sleep expert from the University of Oxford and co-founder of Sleepio (Tips for children aged from 3 to 13) Getting young children into their beds 2. Stick to bedtime routines and rituals and staying there can challenge parents A consistent bedtime routine, or a set of specific at the best of times, let alone the night 'rituals' before lights out, will signal that it's time before Christmas, especially with one in to sleep. If you’re staying away from home, find three adults having to jump out of bed on ways to recreate parts of the routine, even if they are happening later than usual. Preparing for Christmas morning between 4-7am.

Here, world sleep expert from the University of Oxford and co-founder of digital sleep improvement programme Sleepio, Professor Colin Espie, has compiled the top 5 tips to get your kids off to sleep before Santa stops by.

1. Be active during the day

There is plenty of evidence that regular exercise can help you fall asleep faster and stay asleep through the night. One Australian study found that every hour a child spends inactive adds three minutes to the time taken to nod off. Take a break from Christmas movies and head to the park to help expend excess energy in good time before bed.

bed in the same order each night (such as bath, brushing teeth, stories, goodnight hug), will help with readiness for sleep, wherever you are. Even a few days of a consistent schedule should help your child settle in a new location. Bringing familiar bedding, toys and books will help them to relax and feel secure away from home.

3. Act before your child gets overtired

Young children are often reluctant to admit that they're tired - even more so when the alternative to bed is playing with shiny new toys. Look for signs of sleepiness before your child starts to be overtired, which is often the driver for 'hyper' behavior. Try to start the bedtime

routine at a consistent time. If they really don't feel tired, they can play quietly in their bed or crib with the lights low. If you notice that your child is often overtired at night, experiment by shifting the whole bedtime routine forwards by 15-30 minutes.

4. Give plenty of notice Give plenty of notice when bedtime is coming up, and then stick to what you’ve said: “In 10 minutes the cartoon will end and it’ll be bath time, and then we’ll have time for two books.” A timer which rings when playtime runs out could be a useful ‘independent’ signal that it’s time for bed. If your child refuses to stay in bed, try to avoid giving extra attention for bad behavior. Be as neutral and uninteresting as you can as you return your child to bed, even if you have to do this a few times. Consistency is key - even at Christmas - to help the whole family sleep well.

5. And if all else fails... With a house full of guests, your child may understandably feel as though they are missing out on all the excitement by going up to bed. If you’ve followed the tips above and still have a stubborn and weary young one, hanging onto the bannisters in slumber-protest: the suggestion that Father Christmas only leaves presents for children who are asleep might just be enough incentive to encourage lights out. At least that’s what the elves told me. Sleepio is a six-week online sleep program for adults, clinically proven to help those with longterm sleep problems fall asleep, stay asleep and feel better during the day.

Tony B’s Thoughts on food for Christmas Classic Roast Goose

This is a classic Christmas dish which serves 6 to 8 people but it can be expensive, so equally you could use a Duck, cooked using the same method, only the oven temperature and timing will vary and this serves 2 to 4 people, so please enjoy and have a great Christmas. Ingredients: 4-5kg/9-11lb 4oz oven-ready goose 6 small onion, halved 3 bay leaf

Method:

1. Heat oven to 200C/fan 180C gas 6, remove all the fat from inside the bird and use a skewer to prick the skin all over, especially under the wings. Season the inside and stuff the goose with onions and herbs. Rub the breast and legs with the oil; season generously with salt. Sit the bird, the right way up, in a large roasting tin. Cover with a large piece of foil. Place the goose in the oven for 1 hr 30 mins.

bunch of thyme 2 tbsp sunflower oil

2. Take the goose out of the oven, then remove the foil, carefully ladle all the fat out of the tin into a bowl, then lightly baste the bird, re-cover with foil, and roast for another 1 hr 30 mins. Pour all the fat from the tin again, baste and return to the oven without any foil to brown for a final 30-40 mins until golden brown. Don’t worry about the goose it will be cooked all the way though. Transfer the goose to a large board or platter to rest in a warmish place for 30 mins.

Foody Tips There are a number of gravies on the market, but in my opinion these 2 are exceptional, the 1st is an old and trusted friend Bisto Best, it contains real meat juices and will turn your humble meat & two veg into something special. the 2nd is Maggi liquid seasoning, it has a great depth of flavour and adds to any roast dish.

Cocktail of the Month - Bellini Sieve the pulp of fresh white peaches. Mix 3 parts juice to 1 part dry Champagne or Prosecco, you can also add a dash of Brandy, then serve chilled.

Remembrance Parade & Service 2017 It is a great honour to be Mayor of Coleshill and a privilege to be part of the annual Remembrance Parade. 2017 has been a troubling time for our nation but Remembrance Sunday is always a day that communities join together to remember those who died in World War One and all conflicts since. As Mayor of Coleshill I am proud of our town and the lengths it goes to pay tribute. As always the team behind the remembrance service and parade have worked tirelessly and my thanks go out to: Coleshill’s Royal British Legion, their chairman Roy Charlesworth and their dedicated team of volunteers who organise the local Poppy Appeal – raising thousands of pounds in the process. The Reverend Nick Parker for organising and conducting a beautiful service, the Reverend Donald Ker for his rousing sermon and all those that took part in the service, including the wider church community of volunteers and congregation for being wonderful hosts. Coleshill Town Band for leading the parade with decorum and special thanks also to Principal Cornet, Rosie Harding for sounding the “Last Post” and “The Rouse” with great dignity. To Lieutenant Matthew Gordon, Royal Navy for returning to his home town on leave and leading the parade.

To my Sergeant At Arms, Simon Toon, for his assistance in organising the parade, his knowledge of ceremonial protocols and the work that he has been doing to mark the centenary of the deaths of the WWI soldiers connected to Coleshill. To the uniformed organisations, their standard-bearers and leaders, 1st Coleshill Brownies, Coleshill Scouts, Cubs and Beavers, Shard End Sea Cadets, 2504 (Heart of England) Sqn RAF Air Cadets and the Girl’s and Boy’s Brigades; to the marshals who kindly volunteered to help with the road closures, standing guard to ensure the safe passage of the parade; Coleshill Primary School for allowing the parade to muster and disband from the school grounds; to Deputy Town Clerk, Zoe Hillcox, and all officers and staff of Coleshill Town Council who ably assisted with the organisation of the event. Thanks also for the work conducted by the Coleshill Remembers Group whose research into the town and the people of Coleshill during WWI has shed new light on the rich history that we have; and the U3A craft group who have created two beautiful Alter Cloths for the Parish Church. If you haven’t seen them already they will be displayed in the Church until the end of November. That leaves it only for me to give thanks to you, the people of Coleshill, for always being hugely supportive of the parade. 2018 marks the centenary of the end of WWI and it is fitting that Remembrance Sunday falls also on Armistice Day, the Coleshill Remembers group are already planning events to mark this occasion including The Beacons of Light – the Nation’s tribute to the fallen soldiers of WWI. Think Scrooge for pet’s festive food dining Christmas dinner advice for dogs and cats to ensure trouble-free festive fun From a succulent roast dinner with all the trimmings to fruit-laden puddings, cakes and chocolates - not to mention nuts, mince pies and smoked salmon Christmas Day is all about eating. And it’s not just as we like to indulge, but our much-loved four-legged family members too. It’s hard to resist slipping them scraps or even their own Christmas dinner from our leftovers, however, we need to be mindful that not everything on the Christmas menu should be shared. With this in mind, and to give pet owners a helping hand this festive season, insurer MORE TH>N’s qualified vet Andrew Moore has devised the ultimate Christmas dinner guides for cats and dogs, ensuring all the family can join in safely on the fun and the food this year. Andrew Moore, MORE TH>N’S veterinary consultant, explains: ‘We all overindulge at Christmas, but festive food in human-sized quantities is more no no no than ho ho ho for our pets. Most festive food is fatty, rich and can sometimes even be downright poisonous to cats and dogs. However it’s not all Bah Humbug, there are certain foods that are fine to feed your pet for one festive meal. When it comes to our pets and food, it’s all about moderation - so the one occasion you should act like Scrooge is to keep the festive treats small and then your pet can enjoy their very own Christmas meal this year, without any nasty repurr-cusions.’

Christmas Dinner Guide For Dogs Starter FISH: Whilst salmon is a favourite amongst us, humans, it’s also a great starter for your dog as it is high in protein and Omega 3 fatty acids, which help support a dog’s immune system and also add shine to a dog’s coat. Choose plain salmon in spring water over smoked salmon though. Prawns - as long as they are well cooked and shelled - will also go down very well.

Main MEAT: Treat your pooch to some turkey this Christmas. Choose small amounts of boneless and skinless breast meat, which can be added to your dog’s meal in moderation.

VEGETABLES: To bring a bit of variety to their Christmas bowl, add some sprouts, swede mash, potatoes, green beans and parsnip, ideally served plain – before any butter or oil is added.

Dessert

Pudding is just as important as the main in our opinion and there’s no need to leave your dog out once the dinner is over. Low in lactose desserts like yoghurt and ricotta cheese in moderation are a great option, as they are excellent sources of calcium and protein. You could also swap grapes and raisin-based desserts for blueberries and dried cranberries, which are both safe for dogs. TOP TIP: Don’t forget to remove a little bit of their normal food to even things out!

Christmas Dinner Guide For Cats Starter FISH: Cats too can tuck into a fishy starter with small amounts of canned tuna, which is a great source of protein in moderation.

Main MEAT: Small amounts of lean meats like skinless turkey breast can add some variety to their moggy menu.

VEGETABLES: Sprouts, swede, carrot and parsnip mash add some colour to their festive feast, but just make sure they don’t contain butter, seasoning or anything toxic such as onions or garlic.

Dessert

Sugar, spice and everything nice hold no interest for a cat, so don’t feel guilty when tucking in to your fourth dessert of the day – cats would much prefer to be eating savoury foods. TOP TIP: Don’t forget to remove a little bit of their normal food to even things out!

It’s not just the Christmas dinner our dogs and cats want to get involved with during the festive season. Andrew Moore’s veterinary team has recalled some funny tales from clients who had to “paws” the festive fun to deal with some pets who took it a step too far during the festive season… ‘I once pulled a very long string of tinsel out of a Labradors throat, which never seemed to end’. ‘A dog ate an entire Christmas cake (seconds after they had drizzled it with brandy and lit it on fire) while it was still engulfed in flames!’. ‘A very small sausage dog came in after eating an entire box of Twilight dark chocolate mints in their wrappers on Boxing Day…three years in a row – setting quite the Christmas tradition for the family’. John Ellenger, Head of Pet Insurance MORE TH>N, added: “Eating the Christmas dinner has to be one of the most exciting parts of the festive period, so we wanted to make sure the whole family, including those with four legs, could come together and join in this year. We are, however, aware that there are also a lot of don’ts when it comes to feeding pets over the merry season, so we have also developed guides online with information on what our pets should avoid to ensure trips to the vet are kept to a minimum!’ We can’t forget that there’s a number of festive no-no’s that need to be avoided on dogs and cats festive menus this Christmas - the main foods being grapes, raisins, nuts, onions and chocolate. For guides on what not to feed your pet cat and dog this Christmas, please visit our advice pages on the MORE TH>N website. MORE TH>N also gives its customers access to the VetFone service, which gives you 24/7 emergency vet access even when you think the surgery will be closed over Christmas. Anytime, day or night, VetFone allows you to speak to a professional in order to get the best care for your dog.

Marty Moore to join Ulster Rugby next season Wasps have today confirmed that Marty Moore will join Ulster Rugby next season.

Moore arrived at Wasps in the summer of 2016, after earning 58 caps for his province Leinster, and will return to the Pro 14 after two seasons in the Aviva Premiership. Moore has made 34 appearances in black and gold to date. The 26-year-old tighthead prop has won 10 caps for Ireland since making his debut against Scotland in the 2014 RBS 6 Nations Championship and was part of Ireland’s 2014 and 2015 Six Nations title-winning squads A return to the Pro 14 will enable Moore to put himself in a better position to further his international ambitions with Ireland. Speaking of the move, Wasps’ Director of Rugby Dai Young said: “We understand Marty’s desire to increase his chances of an Ireland re-call, being back over in the Pro 14 and we will wish him the very best when he leaves to join Ulster Rugby.

“Unfortunately, a few injuries have meant that Marty hasn’t quite been able to produce the run of performances we know he’s capable of, but hopefully if he stays fit there will be plenty more to come from him over the next few seasons. I have no doubt that he will give everything he can to Wasps for the remainder of the season.” On the news, Marty Moore added, “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Wasps so far and I’ve learned a lot from playing in the Premiership against some quality front row combinations. I feel that experience has benefited my game massively and I’m looking forward to playing as big a part as I can for Wasps for the rest of the season. “Next season, I will look forward to the challenge of playing for Ulster and having the opportunity to work with a few familiar faces. Until then my focus will be on what we can achieve at Wasps this season.”

8. Don’t Skip Your Strength Workouts 9. Set Realistic Goals

December 2017

Rob Miller signs on for more at Wasps Wasps are delighted to announce that Rob Miller is the latest player to put pen to paper on a new deal.

Miller joins Ashley Johnson, Tom Cruse and Alex Rieder in signing new contracts with the club. Since Miller joined Wasps from Sale Sharks at the beginning of the 2014/15 season, he has proved himself a valuable member of the squad, making 115 appearances to date and showing his versatility by playing at fly half, in the centres and on the wing, as well as his customary position of fullback. Miller was the Premiership's top try scorer in the 2011-12 season with Sale Sharks and previously impressed for Newcastle Falcons and Tynedale RFC. The 28-year-old has represented England at U16, U18, U20 and Saxons levels. Speaking about the contract extension, Wasps’ Director of Rugby Dai Young said, “I’m really pleased that Rob has committed to Wasps and signed a new deal. He is a talented player, who can beat people with good footwork and

has strong distribution skills. Rob’s been a real asset for this squad since he arrived and I have no doubt there is plenty more to come from him as well. “Rob has become a key component of this group and is a well-liked member of the squad. He has shown valuable versatility and really stepped-up to the plate every time we’ve needed him to. He is extremely professional in the way he approaches the game and is one of those players who can always be found doing extras to keep improving his game and to make sure he’s ready if called on for kicking duties. We’re really pleased to have him on board going forward.” Rob Miller added: “I'm really happy to have re-signed at Wasps. We’ve got a really great group of lads here and I’m enjoying my rugby. “As a squad, we are working hard to take ourselves to the next level and this group is something I want to be a part of going forward. This group has been building for a number of seasons and I believe there are some exciting times ahead for us as a team and I'm looking forward to being a part of it.”

Brad Shields to join Wasps in 2018/19 season Wasps are pleased to confirm that back-row Brad Shields will join the club during the 2018/19 season following his Super Rugby commitments with the Hurricanes. The 26 year-old has made 86 appearances for the Hurricanes since signing for the Super Rugby side in 2012 and played a prominent role in the Hurricanes’ 2016 Championship-winning season. He also skippered the side against the British and Irish Lions in the summer. Shields has also represented Wellington 57 times, having made his provincial debut as a 19-year-old, and was named the Wellington Lions’ Player of the Season in 2016. Captaining the side last season, he played a key role in the Lions winning promotion back to the Premiership, after defeating Bay of Plenty in a dramatic Championship Final last month. Shields was part of the New Zealand U20s side that retained the Junior IRB World Championship title in 2011 and was named in the 2012 All Blacks training squad. Last year, Shields represented the Barbarians in the 31-31 draw against the Springboks at Wembley.

Looking ahead to Shields’ arrival next season, Director of Rugby Dai Young said, “We are really pleased that Brad has decided he wants to spend the next stage of his career at Wasps, after completing the next Super Rugby season with the Hurricanes. We are looking forward to seeing the impact he can make for Wasps as he takes on the new challenge of the Aviva Premiership and European Rugby Champions Cup. “Alongside his natural talent, Brad is recognised for his immense physicality and high workrate. He has made a number of eye-catching performances, particularly at no. 8, but his versatility to play at 6 will also be beneficial to the squad. We look forward to welcoming him to the club next season and I’m sure he will prove himself a valuable addition to the strong pool of talent we already have in our back-row.” Ahead of next year’s move to the Aviva Premiership, Brad Shields said, "I'm really excited for the new opportunity to join Wasps. I think the club plays a similar style of rugby to the Hurricanes and feel I will fit in nicely. The club competes well across all the competitions and it's going to be the perfect place for my young family to settle. I'm looking forward to joining the squad after my playing commitments with the Hurricanes finish in 2018."

Taylor faces Mccaskill in first World Title Defence Irish star takes on Chicago fighter in London on December 13 Katie Taylor will defend her WBA World Lightweight title against Jessica McCaskill at York Hall, Bethnal Green on Wednesday December 13, live on Sky Sports. Taylor landed the crown in at Principality Stadium in Cardiff to add her first major pro strap to a glittering amateur career. The Bray star puts that title on the line for the first time in the famous east London venue against Chicago’s McCaskill. The 33 year old boxes outside of the States for the first time in her career – and Taylor wants to silence ‘CasKILLA’ who has been calling the champion out. “If she's as relentless in the ring as she is on social media it should be a great fight!” said Taylor. “I'm more than happy to give her the opportunity and I certainly won't be avoiding anyone as a champion. “I truly believe that this is only the start of things for me. I want all the belts and the biggest possible fights over the next few years. “It’s been a great first year for me as a professional and this really sets me up for a great finish to it. Headlining on Sky Sports is another first for the sport and I’m so grateful to Eddie Hearn and Sky for the opportunity. “Trash talking’s not really my thing but she seems to be happy to talk enough for the both of us anyway! Maybe it’s something she feels she

has to do for her own confidence but none of that stuff matters once the first bell rings. I'm happy to let my boxing do the talking then and that's definitely where I express myself best.” “I have a lot of respect for this sport and for Katie Taylor, but I will be bringing that belt and respect back with me,” said McCaskill. “I want to be known as the number one in America and of course the World title is definitely the goal.” A stacked undercard of talent Brits are set to support Taylor’s defence with unbeaten SuperFeatherweight talent Martin J. Ward can add another title to his impressive collection as he faces former champion Juli Giner for the vacant European title. The Fight Before Christmas Stokes brothers - Tom and Josh - are joined by fellow unbeaten boxers, Adam Harper and Jordan Clayton, on BCB Promotions' Christmas professional boxing dinner show in Birmingham on Thursday, 21st December.

'The Fight Before Christmas', sponsored by Grosvenor Casino Birmingham Hill Street and Alliance Scaffolding, is a four-fight dinner show that takes place at the Holiday Inn Birmingham. Eldest Stokes brother, Josh, will be looking to secure a fifth straight victory in his debut year as a professional. The 24 year-old light heavyweight recorded his first stoppage last time out as he put Latvian Raimonds Sniedze to the sword. On the contrary, younger brother, Tom, will be hoping to bounce back from a first defeat. The 22 year-old lost on points in a Fight of the Year contender with Tyler Denny for the Midlands Area Middleweight Title. Stokes lost by the slightest of margins but will be looking to end the year on a high. Midlands Area Super Welterweight Champion Adam Harper has his sights set

on the Commonwealth Title. The 29 year-old from Tewksbury was due to challenge current champion, Anthony Buttigieg, for the strap in Australia last month but an injury to Buttigieg means the fight has been rescheduled for the New Year. Harper will be looking to keep busy as he homes in on his Commonwealth shot. Completing the dinner show is undefeated super welterweight, Jordan Clayton. Clayton drew his last contest after picking up a nasty cut against road warrior, Nathan Hardy. The 24 yearold from Solihull will be hoping for a smoother end to 2017. Tickets are £65 per person to include a twocourse meal. Contact the boxers direct or email errol@bcb-promotions.com. The aftershow and weigh-in will take place at Grosvenor Casino Hill Street Birmingham, which is just a two minute walk away from the venue. All over 18’s welcome. Barnes moves to 5-0 as a pro and claims WBO intercontinental title with knockout victory over Quezada Three-time Olympian was in electric form as he dropped his foe en route to sixth-round stoppage win Paddy Barnes has claimed his fifth professional win and the vacant WBO inter-continental flyweight title with a sixth-round stoppage victory over Nicaraguan Eliecer Quezada at Belfast’s SSE Odyssey Arena.

Fighting on the ‘Frampton Reborn’ undercard of his friend Carl ‘The Jackal’ Frampton, the three-time Olympian was in impressive form. Barnes dropped his opponent with a bodyhead combo just before the bell to end the second round and produced a characteristically energetic performance to move to 5-0. Southpaw Quezada failed to make the flyweight limit after two attempts on Friday, meaning he was not in a position to claim the vacant stepping-stone title or the world ranking that goes with it. The 26-year-old visitor struggled to deal with Barnes’ energizer-bunny style as the former European amateur champion and two-time Olympic medallist started at a lightning pace. Competing in just his fifth pro bout since turning pro 12 months ago, the Irishman was fighting in his second bout to be scheduled for 10 rounds. With trainer Danny Vaughan in his corner, the MTK Global-managed fighter was at his best in

the early rounds as he regularly pinned Quezada on the ropes. After dropping the Nicaraguan in the second, Barnes continually pressured his opponent, although referee Steve Gray was forced to warn the Belfast native for a low blow in the fifth round. ‘The Leprechaun’ only needed one more round to get the job done, however, as he finished off his foe with a vicious left hook to the body in the sixth. Quezada failed to beat referee Steve Gray’s count and the official called a halt at 3mins 6secs of the round. The win means Barnes will jump up the world rankings in his pursuit of an early world-title shot. “I’m hoping to get back out in March after I have a break over the Christmas. I’d like to get out on Mick’s [Conlan] undercard in New York if I can,” said Barnes. “I knew from the second round when he [Quezada] went down that he didn’t want to know. I felt I didn’t really touch him, but he just wanted out. I kept backing him up and didn’t give him space to breath and I got the job done. “It was unbelievable to fight in front of this Belfast crowd. It was unreal. I wanted to give the crowd something to shout about and hopefully I did that.”

MTK Global - Conlan suffers devastating defeat despite gutsy showing against classy champion Ancajas

Jamie Conlan suffered a heartbreaking defeat despite a gutsy effort in his IBF world superflyweight title challenge against Filipino Jerwin Ancajas at the SSE Odyssey Arena. Belfast native Conlan came into the bout hoping to upset the odds, having been priced as a big underdog by the bookmakers in advance of the bout. The 31-year-old MTK Global-managed fighter had his brother and former amateur world champion Michael in his corner, alongside trainer Danny Vaughan, while he received a fantastic reception from the Belfast faithful. However, classy southpaw Ancajas was just too good for the

challenger, who suffered his first pro defeat in 20 professional bouts in his first world-title challenge and the chief-support bout to Carl Frampton’s ring return at the Odyssey. Conlan was put down a number of times from heavy blows as well as a couple of low shots from the champion. The first knockdown came from a delayed reaction to a big punch in the opening round and Ancajas’ body shots were ruthless when subsequently dropping the challenger, resulting in four knockdowns in total. Despite being warned for low blows in the fifth, Ancajas – extending his winning record to 28-1-1 – continued to hurt the gutsy Conlan, who somehow managed to rise to his feet after every knockdown as his hometown crowd cheered on his determined effort. Referee Steve Gray called a halt after 52 seconds of the sixth round to end Conlan’s world-title dream, although the Falls Road warrior will surely be keen to rebuild once he recovers from this devastating defeat.

F.A. Vase, on the road to Wembley again! Coleshill Town FC came so close last season to a famous visit to Wembley in the Buildbase FA Vase, but were beaten by favourites and eventual winners South Shields. A fabulous crowd of 1755 packed into Pack Meadow to see their local team and they weren't disappointed, a brilliant afternoon was had by all! So with South Shields no longer in the competition, they were promoted and now play in the FA Trophy, could the Colemen go one better and make the Final. Because of their success last time out, Coleshill were considered one of the favourites and were given byes in the first three rounds and joined the competition in November at the Second Round stage. Blaby & Whetstone Athletic from Leicester were the visitors and after a fairly even first half Town were 2-1 up with two goals from Jordan Nadat but unfortunately were down to ten men when Luke Edwards saw a straight Red card. Coleshill should have sat back and hoped to protect their lead but that never happened as they went on the rampage and scored another Six. Jordan Nadat took the plaudits with his double hat-trick, but this was a team performance and everyone deserves credit including the other scorers Joe Halsall and Reece Leek. Onto the 3rd Round an away game at Coleshill's oldest rivals Highgate United. The two sides have been doing battle pretty much every year since 1975 and are considered as Town's bogey team, indeed Coleshill had never beaten Highgate in a cup competition. A blood and guts game followed on a mud-bath of a pitch! Dean Rathbone scored with just 13 minutes to play but Gate equalised from the penalty spot. In the dying seconds Jorna Moulton and Ryan Edmunds combined to set up Dean Rathbone for the winner, another fabulous team performance.

Up until 2013 Coleshill had never made it as far as the 4th Round (the last 32) but have now reached this stage for the fourth time. The draw had been Regional until now but with this round being National could the organisers have sent us further away than Newcastle Benfield! Tie to be played on Saturday 6th January. The club will be running a supporters coach to Newcastle, watch out for details on Facebook or the football club's web site. And what about the League? Coleshill are currently in second place on goal difference but have a game in hand on leaders Sporting Khalsa who they meet on Saturday 16th December, a must win game! Town played just three league games in November, two wins over Long Eaton and Coventry United and a draw away to Loughborough University, scoring ten goals and conceding just one. Coleshill are also still in the Birmingham Senior Cup and the League Cup and so are fighting on four fronts. Get down to Pack Meadow and see your Local team soon. Boxing Day would be a great time to get to a game, get down Packington Lane and walk off all that Xmax pud! 3pm Kick Off!
