Royal British Legion care home, Galanos House, has beaten a current Guinness World Record by creating the world’s largest human flower, forming the shape of the Legion poppy of course! Located in South Warwickshire, Galanos House has celebrated its 50th anniversary by inviting its residents, staff, volunteers, families and the local community to be part of history by creating a giant human poppy. Participants included local schools, Legion branches, the Women’s Institute, the Scouting movement and many others, came together at the Southam College to beat the current record of 2297 participants. The event was a huge success with the final total of participants 2609 – beating the record by 312! Guinness is in the process of verifying the record-breaking attempt to confirm the ‘official’ record. Jo-Anne Wilson, Care Home Manager, said: “We’ve had an incredible response to the 50th anniversary celebrations and we are absolutely thrilled to have set a new world record and mark a milestone year with a fantastic event, we look forward to Guinness World Records adjudicating our result,” Fifty years ago, in South Warwickshire, The Royal British Legion used a generous donation to lay the foundation of a retirement home for ex-servicemen and women. Today, this award-winning home still carries the name of its benefactor, Christos Galanos and cares for over 60 residents and has a specialist dementia care unit, Poppy Lodge, which opened in 2011 and cares for an additional 30 residents. Jo-Anne added: “We are very grateful for the support the local community has shown us over the past fifty years and look forward to the next fifty years! At Galanos we take pride in delivering outstanding excellence when it comes to care, and providing a happy, vibrant and close community within the home for each and every resident.” Galanos House is one of six Royal British Legion care homes that provide short and long-term care for serving and ex-Service people and their dependents. Borough Council reaction to Government announcement on HS2 The Government today confirmed the route of the second phase of HS2 which badly affects the North Warwickshire area, particularly the communities of Bodymoor Heath, Kingsbury, Birchmoor, Polesworth, Warton and Austrey. North Warwickshire Borough Council has criticised the decision to press on with the hugely controversial scheme, despite Phase 1 being plagued by funding doubts and problems over the letting of construction contracts. There was however some better news as local efforts to lessen the impact on Austrey have been successful. The Government’s 2016 preferred route brought the line significantly closer to the village, raising fears of additional noise and disruption. However after lobbying by North Warwickshire Borough Council, the County Council, Austrey Parish Council, local

action groups and a total of 588 objections, the Government announced that the route in this area would go back to the original line suggested in 2013. Councillor David Humphreys, Leader of the Council and a Councillor for Austrey said: “Whilst it seems inevitable now that HS2 will go ahead in both its phases, it is worth repeating our view that this represents very bad use of public money, the benefits of which remain doubtful and which will cause huge amounts of disruption in our area. I’m pleased that the line has been moved away from Austrey and the Councils and local residents have worked very well together to bring this about. We will make it clear to HS2 however that this does not buy off all of our concerns and we need to ensure that considerable mitigation is put in place across the whole Borough. The impact on the M42 and

A5 are of real concern; we need to ensure our economy continues to thrive and is not choked by these works. Councillor Jacky Chambers, Opposition Spokesperson for HS2 and Councillor for Dordon added: “The Council is united on this. Despite the thousands of objections from the worst affected areas and beyond, the Government is determined to plough ahead with this plan, which will leave large areas of North Warwickshire with lasting environmental damage. The Government has conceded that there will be no benefit to North Warwickshire for which we will have to give up 23 miles of Green Belt, ancient woodland and listed buildings, not to mention people’s homes and livelihoods. The damage to much loved country parks and the disruption to the M42 and A5 will be felt for years.”

Local Man to Become First Disabled Person to Challenge Everest on Horseback

Max Stainton, who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, has set up the Riding Everest project to challenge our perceptions of disabled people and to raise funds for the Riding for the Disabled Association’s (RDA’s) new National Training Centre in Warwickshire. Having teamed up with independent travel company, Adventure Alternative, Max and his team will set out on their journey on March 30th 2018 and expect the trek to last 16 days. Max’s condition makes it difficult for his body to retain heat and he is unable to walk without assistance, so making the trip to the 5km high Base Camp is going to be incredibly challenging. Riding Everest are to raise money for RDA and to raise awareness of what people with cerebral palsy can achieve. “Here is a guy who is almost 24/7 reliant on other people to live. He is a truly inspirational person and I cannot wait to help him achieve his main goal and get to Everest Base Camp.” Max said: “As a child, RDA was one of the first consistent therapies I had. It not only provided regular therapy for my condition, but it allowed me to take part in a sport I could participate in and interact with a different set of people and make new friends. “Riding Everest is going to be really, massively difficult because of my cerebral palsy. Even for an able-bodied person, riding eight hours a day will be incredibly challenging. I’m going to be taking my body to the extreme limits of its endurance. “We want exciting, dynamic and adventurous people and organisations to join us on this incredible journey, and make it a truly global success.”

The collaboration between B46 Business and Coleshill School meant they were successfully awarded a grant of £3,000 via Build a Business Network scheme from Warwickshire County Council. The purpose of the grant is to help schools develop business networks and to improve the employability skills of young people. The grant has enabled multiple activities to take place, such as a highly successful breakfast networking event hosted by the School on the 12th April which brought 30 local business leaders together. Other activities include employability skills training, social media awareness, public speaking, CV writing, mock interviews, office skills, personal branding, and business visits. All too often business leaders state the skills shortage as a barrier to growth and bemoan the lack of suitable skilled apprentices. Hopefully the successful collabo-

You can provide local youngsters with opportunities and experiences beyond what is possible at home or in school. Helping out in the Coleshill Boys and Girls Brigades can make all the difference to young lives – meaning happier young people, happier communities and a society that values the contribution that we can all make. You can be one of more than 12,000 volunteers who give their time and effort to care for and work with over 47,000 young people across the UK. Volunteers say they’ve learned things through their involvement with the brigades, and that it’s a massively rewarding

On 16th July, Glynis Gayton recalled 1940 for us from the jottings in her father-inlaw, William’s, diary. In 1921 William and his brother Thomas had founded Gayton’s Bakery, located in Maypole Lane, Grendon to serve the local communities of Baddesley and Grendon. William, a keen diarist, recorded his observations on daily life and the looming war in Europe.

His words reminded us of a time long past. Then we had outside toilets, no central heating, no television and no National Health Service. The diary blended humour, everyday practicalities and the spectre of an unstoppable war machine moving relentlessly towards Britain. However, the Nazis were not the Gayton’s first concern. Council acts against anti-social behaviour North Warwickshire Borough Council’s Housing team, working with the Police’s local Safer Neighbourhood Team, has acted on complaints made by families living on the Bretts Hall Estate, Ansley Common about anti-social behaviour, noise nuisance and rowdy behaviour from a few people in the area. The Council listened to the issues, took the matter to Court and got an 8-day “ex-parte” injunction

All of the children at High Meadow Infant School have really enjoyed closely observing the butterfly cycle in their last few weeks of school. They watched tiny white eggs change into caterpillars, then chrysalis and then break open into delicate butterflies! The week before finishing for the summer holidays, the children then experienced the awe and wonder of releasing them into the wild. Mrs Hughes (Headteacher) said: “It is really important that all of our children experience the beauty of nature first hand. Our children have observed, close up, the amazing life cycle of a butterfly by having 10 eggs in each classroom and then closely watching them change. They learn to use kind and gentle hands throughout their time at High Meadow and this is a real life opportunity to show just how gentle they can be with our delicate wildlife”

Swans and Cygnets say Thank you! Swans and Cygnets toddler group would like to say a big THANK YOU to Warwickshire County Council Councillor Grant Fund for giving them a grant of £500.

As you can see our toddlers have gained lots of new toys for them to share and explore, and our baby area has had a revamp with some flashing lights, supporting cushions, and sensory toys. The grant has also secured funding to help towards staff wages. Nikki Harris the group leader said “Having the grant has really made the difference to our group. The group is very popular and lots of children and carers benefit from coming. The Grant has enabled us to offer new exciting activities for the children to help with their early development.” Swans and Cygnets meet every Tuesday (Term time only) at High Meadow Infant School between 9.15 and 10.45am. The weather was certainly beau fixe for the Twinning Association visit to Chassieu at the end May. From the Wednesday of our arrival to the Sunday of our departure we had blue skies and temperatures in the upper 20s. The welcome from our hosts was, as ever, equally warm and the 35 of us who travelled to the beautiful Rhône-Alpes region of France enjoyed the best of hospitality.

At the official welcoming party at the Boulodrome on the evening of our arrival, the local M.P. Philippe Meunier, congratulated us on our long-standing alliance. Brexit was mentioned but all agreed that our two nations had so much in common – the shock of the recent terrorist attack in London had brought messages of

sympathy from Chassieu – that the negotiations should in no way prejudice our future friendship. Malcolm Butler, our chairman, who was by now wearing a Lyon Olympique football shirt printed with his name, presented to him by the mayor, Jean-Jacques Sellès, thanked Aline Duret, his French counterpart, for inviting us again, saying that he could see from the itinerary in the welcome-pack that we were in for an interesting stay. After the ceremony there was just time for a few games of boules before supper was served. Thursday morning we board a coach and follow l’Autoroute du Soleil down the banks of the shining river Rhône to Tain l’Hermitage, the home of Valrhona Cité du Chocolat, a place where we learn how the fruit of a rather modest tropical tree is made into one of the most tempting snacks ever nibbled. We are in two groups, French and English and are shown the process by a guide who speaks our language. (Some folks deliberately go into the wrong group, just to practice the other language). Our guide asks for a volunteer to split a coco pod with a mallet. We urge Malcom to accept the challenge. One, two, three…! And he hits the pod amidships, splitting it perfectly in two and revealing the moist green beans, close-packed inside. The beans must be dried, baked, ground, heat treated and flavoured before they are moulded into chocolate bars. The visit concludes with exhibits designed to test our senses of smell and taste. All so tempting but one mustn’t spoil one’s appetite for lunch. We lunch at La Grappe d’Or restaurant, its name inspired by the vines that grow on the nearby

slopes. It is a meal taken with leisurely French conviviality and even music when a member of the party plays the grand piano and someone sings Autumn Leaves. Before we return to Chassieu to spend the evening with our hosts, we take a long ride on Le Petit Train des Vignes. It is the sort of vehicle we usually see taking tourists around a seaside town. Here, in Tain, it collects us on the road that skirts the river, takes us on a tour of the old town and then meanders uphill, through the famous vineyards, finally coming to a standstill near the summit. ‘I stop here for 15 minutes. For you to take photographs.’ says the driver. And so we do. Beneath an azure sky, looking down the valley across row upon row of Syrah and Marsanne vines, across the pantile roofs of Tain, across the river to the mountains of the Massif Central. Friday morning is spent at the Maison de la Photographie in Saint Bonnet de Mure, one of the many small towns that, like Chassieu, encircle Lyon. Here François Boisjoly has assembled the most comprehensive collection of photographic equipment imaginable. It is a small museum, once a convent, and our two groups have to squeeze in as we pass in the narrow spaces where every wall and horizontal surface is crammed with exhibits. Certainly photography was one of the things that defined the last century but Monsieur Boisjoly reminds us that it dates back to before Galileo, to the pinhole camera obscura. He even suggests that pre-historic man’s cave drawings may have been based on an image projected by a small hole in an animal skin tent. When asked how long it took him to build his wonderful collection, he says he acquired his first camera when he was fourteen, back in the 50s, and has never stopped collecting. We lunch at Les Voiles du Grande Large, a restaurant with a splendid view across the reservoir that feeds one of the country’s oldest hydraulic power stations at Cusset. Nowadays the lake is also used for recreation and as we dine, sailing dinghies criss-cross the water.

Two years ago we were shown Lyon’s modernistic natural history museum, sited where the Rhône and the Saône meet. This year yet another major project is completed: the Parc Olympique Lyonnais football stadium, the subject of this afternoon’s visit. Both schemes have been highly controversial: the museum had cost five times its original estimate, and local opinion polls showed a large majority against the new stadium, seeing no reason why OL should quit their old ground at Gerland. Now (rather like Morrisons) most people approve. Here are a few Parc OL statistics: cost - €415 million; capacity - 59,186; parking spaces – 16 000; refreshment stalls – 58; theatre – 300 seats; restaurant – 480 seats; lifts – 20; escalators – 19. The stadium also hosts ice hockey, the circus and concerts. Tickets for Coldplay and Céline Dione are selling, as the French say, comme des petits pains. Malcolm, who had put on his OL strip for the tour, is disappointed not to be asked for his autograph. Our hosts organised activities for Saturday, before the evening Farewell Party at the Best Western Hôtel de Chassieu, where some 80 Twinners dined and danced until after midnight. Our chairmen made short speeches. Aline Duret says how we often share family news across the distance that separates us. She had noticed that Prince George is to go to school in September. When he comes to take his history exam, she hopes he can remember what order his royal ancestors come in. Malcolm, who was no longer wearing his OL shirt, thanked the Chasseulands and congratulated the organisers for including two of his favourite things: chocolate and soccer. What a fantastic day we had on Saturday 17th June with the Coleshill Great Get Together and Peace Festival, here in Coleshill Town

The day started behind the scenes with Mr. Khurram Ahmad driving off to Snowdonia, North Wales to collect a light from the World Peace Flame (in a miner’s lamp) and bring it back to Coleshill to start the Coleshill Peace Festival. At 12.30pm the Town Mayor, Cllr. Tony Battle received the flame at the Old Market Hall where all parties involved in the event shared their thoughts and aims for this occasion. The background to this shared event is two fold. Firstly, to acknowledge the anniversary of the tragic death of Jo Cox MP, murdered in her hometown Birstall, West Yorkshire whilst trying to build community, integration, diversity and peace within her own constituency. From her sad death, her family set up the Jo Cox Foundation, which arranged a national “Great Get Together” to bring people together in love, peace and community to continue her work. Secondly, the working alliance of Coleshill Churches Together, led by Reverend Nick Parker, Coleshill Town Council and Michael Muzaffer Clarke of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK who have been building relations to improve the understandings of the Muslim faith and build better relationships within local communities, all led to this combined Coleshill event. As Jo Cox said in her maiden speech to the House of Commons, “we have far more in common, than that which divides us” The “Wow Factor” was created with a new partnership with MKD Adventures who agreed to manage and run an eye-catching, fundraising, abseiling spectacular down the Coleshill Parish Church Tower! Everyone attending on the day was encouraged to bring food and picnics to share together in an act of both a collective sharing and unity.

The event closed with a multi-faith service held in the Parish Church which included songs, readings and poems reflecting peace and unity. The whole day was based on bringing people together to build on the core beliefs that we all share within our towns and communities, these being of peace, compassion, unity, acceptance, non-violence, and love. By the end of the day, 21 brave super heroes had abseiled down the Church tower, raising over £1000 for the Jo Cox Foundation, the World Peace Flame had been accepted into our Coleshill community, delicious food had been shared, sun cream applied and voices heard in the church speaking of the many beliefs that link and join us all. Thank you, thank you, thank you to EVERYONE who assisted, gave up their time, or their money, or by embracing new friendships, or by sharing their food or just by getting together to make change in the world. The inspiration for Coleshill’s Great Get Together & Peace Festival day was inspired by Lao Tzu’s poem:

If there is to be peace in the world, there must be peace in the nations. If there is to be peace in the nations, there must be peace in the cities. If there is to be peace in the cities, there must be peace between neighbours. If there is to be peace between neighbours, there must be peace in the home. If there is to be peace in the home, there must be peace in the heart.

The projected bill for the HS2 high speed rail network has been estimated at £111bn, double the official £55.7bn figure being used by Government and HS2 Ltd. The estimate was commissioned by the Department for Transport and produced by Michael Byng, the man who rewrote the book on rail cost estimation, devising the standard method of costing which has been adopted by Network Rail following several high-profile failures to accurately cost their projects.

This revelation, published in The Sunday Times, comes ahead of a big week for HS2 Ltd in which they are expected to: appoint consultants to produce final designs for Phase 1 from London to Birmingham; deposit a bill in Parliament for the Phase 2a extension to Crewe; and publish the final route for Phase 2b to Manchester and Leeds. Using his “rail method of measurement” formulae to calculate the projected costs of HS2, Byng said that Phase 1 of would cost £48bn, with construction of the entire project coming in at £104bn. This estimate did not include the cost of the trains, which would add around another £7bn, putting the total bill for HS2 at £111bn, double the £55.7bn official estimate. Lord Berkeley, chairman of the Rail Freight Group, had originally asked Byng to use his

model to re-evaluate the costs of the section between Euston and Old Oak Common, which he put at £8.25bn. Byng told The Sunday Times: “HS2 has not questioned the figure, or my methodology, nor have they come up with any structured estimate of their own. A couple of days later I got a call from the DfT saying, look, if 6.6 miles is going to cost us £8.25bn, what chance have we got of getting to Birmingham? I said: I’ll work it out for you.” “Michael Hurn, the project sponsor at the DfT, is a very good guy and is very worried at the advice he’s been given [by HS2]. The big contractors are also worried. They’ve said when they submit a bid it’s nowhere near [as low as] the estimates that HS2 have got for the job.” It is anticipated that the contractors who will complete the final design of Phase 1 of HS2 will be appointed this week. This process of final design is expected to take up to 18 months, and will quite probably see another increase in cost, meaning construction of Phase 1 is currently two years behind schedule, even though HS2 Ltd have recently ‘rebranded’ enabling works as ‘construction’, so they can spin that construction has started on time. Also this week, it is expected that a hybrid bill will be deposited in parliament for Phase 2a of

HS2, though whether it will include the promised but uncosted station at Crewe is unclear. On top of that, the final announcement of the Phase 2b route is expected to be announced on Monday. It is expected that the route will not change substantially from the revised route published last year, which removed the standalone Sheffield station. Stop HS2 Campaign Manager Joe Rukin responded: “The cost of HS2 has already doubled once since it was first proposed so it should come as no surprise to anyone that it might double again, but when it is the man who wrote the book on estimating rail projects saying this, Government should really listen. With it being so obvious to everyone who lives in the real world that there are so many far more important priorities for public spending, it seems utterly insane that the Government are still wedded to this vainglorious vanity project and all its’ false promises.” “With the final design for HS2 not due for another 18 months, it is already two years late and that redesign will almost certainly jack up the costs again. Since the start, the case for HS2 has been invented by the very cheerleaders who intend to rake in billions of taxpayers’ money which is desperately needed elsewhere, so it

really is time to ditch this gigantic white elephant, before it is too late.” Penny Gaines, chair of Stop HS2 added, "The budget for HS2 has always seemed more fantasy than reality. Up until now the Government has been getting away with it, because the bulk of the spending will come later. But as construction comes nearer, the real cost of HS2 will have to be paid. It’s time to cancel HS2 and use the money that will be saved on things that will benefit more people rather than a few fat cats. “More environmental destruction, more cost, but no new ideas - that's what HS2 Phase 2 b is. HS2: Fast Track to Disaster Recently the Department for Transport have published their 2016 passenger figures for parts of the rail network, which both undermine the case for HS2 and demonstrate that there must be serious flaws in the DfT passenger forecast models.

The figures show that Euston station currently handles 163,800 passengers per day on all routes, whilst Government figures expect that HS2 would carry double that number of passengers, just on long distance HS2 trains to fewer destinations than the current Virgin services. Whilst one service out of Euston appears in each of the spring (17.46 to Crewe) and autumn (18.13 to Birmingham) top 10 most overcrowded trains, in both cases this is because these London Midland services are 8, not 12 carriages, and they are non-stop services to Milton Keynes, after which they are not overcrowded. Figures also show that there has been a significant increase in short-distance commuting to other cities, which raises a rather large question mark about the DfT passenger forecasts published last week as part of the High-Level Output Specification (HLOS), which Government use to predict where investment in the railways is needed. Last week, HLOS predicted that over the next five years there would be a 2.8% increase in the morning peak for passengers into Leeds, whilst Manchester passenger numbers would go up by just 2.2% over the same five year period. However, the actual passenger figures for show a 7.8% peak increase for Leeds and a 7% increase for Manchester. If these trends are to continue, the Government forecast will be out by a factor of around 17 (16

& 18). The vast majority of these passengers are short distance commuters, with only about 10% of the trains into both these cities being long distance services, many of which make local stops where they can become overcrowded. To demonstrate how clearly wrong the HLOS predictions are, Crossrail platforms at Liverpool St and Paddington are predicted to start off with immediately attracting tens of thousands of passengers, but then not have any passenger growth for the following five years. Despite all this, last week Transport Secretary Chris Grayling gave the go ahead for HS2, whilst questioning the need for extra platforms at Manchester Piccadilly and cancelling a mass of electrification programmes, claiming that bi-mode electric diesel trains could provide faster services, something which due to the extra weight of such trains is simply not true, and it somehow goes at odds with the concept of getting rid of fossil-fuel driven cars, to go cancel electric trains in favour of dual-mode diesel ones. Joe Rukin, Stop HS2 Campaign Manager responded; “The overarching trend for rail passenger increases over recent years has been for short distance commuters, who will continue to face increasingly desperate crush hour conditions, as the actual rail passenger statistics are polls apart from the forecasts Government are using to predict where investment is needed.” “It is clear that HS2 delivers capacity where it is needed the least, but with the cancellation of the electrification projects last week, the Government has confirmed it will be putting all its' eggs in the HS2 basket for decades to come. By announcing bi-mode electric/diesel trains instead of full electrification, many

services will not get better as promised by Government, but will end up worse because heavier dual engine trains aren’t as fast as the current ones.” “There has never been a comprehensive study of what the UK needs in terms of rail infrastructure, and these statistics make it absolutely clear that the DfT simply haven't got a grasp of clearly undeniable facts. By ignoring what is actually happening in the real world and betting the farm on HS2 and HS2 only, we are on the fast track to disaster.” Penny Gaines, chair of Stop HS2, said: “These figures show that HS2 is the wrong investment in the wrong places. The big issue in rail is people commuting, not long distance travellers. HS2 will do nothing for the ordinary commuting, apart from suck investment away from the investments that could improve short distance journeys. We've already seen this earlier this month when electrification and other rail improvements for ordinary passengers have been dropped. It's time that the Government looked again at HS2 and cancelled it, and used the money where it is needed more.” Penny Gaines added: “With the government's latest plans for improving air quality, its bizarre that they have dropped rail electrification. Replacing diesel trains with electric ones is entirely under the Government's control, whereas replacing existing cars with electric ones is up to many millions of car owners. What's more a massive increase in electric cars will also need a massive infrastructure investment in the national grid to get electricity to numerous new charging stations charging stations.”

As the caretaker I am always on hand to help with any special requests regarding room set up such as blinds and shutters opening, tables and chairs arrangements and living locally I am always available if last minute viewings or bookings are required. Water Orton Childminders The pavilion in the park has continued to be the meeting place for Water Orton Childminders and because of its central location coupled with the warm, clean environment we increased our days to twice a week which means during the summer months we can make use of the park as well. Having access to tables, chairs and a kitchen has enabled us to use the

premises for week end and evening training courses and open days. 19 of us completed our first aid training last month, it is very handy with this facility available to us to be able to buy in our own training now instead of having to travel to, Camp Hill, Nuneaton, Bedworth or Stratford after a long busy day at work. We would like to thank the Parish Council and caretaker for making this warm comfortable setting available for hire.

Summer gives us the chance to see our properties in a whole new light – that sunshine pouring in shows up every dusty unloved corner in its true light! If you have Spring Cleaned all you can Spring Clean then there is only one thing left to do – refresh! Experiment with the Pantone colours I featured in the April edition of GEM. Let as much light as you can into your home now – you will see the benefit immediately & it will last way into Autumn & Winter Mirrors reflect light & create the illusion of space in even the smallest of rooms. Buy them as large as you can afford & consider using sheet mirror in corners & alcoves to create interest. Glass furniture allows light rays to shine through, creating patterns on walls & floors. Many companies offer both glass and persex furniture but why not Keep it Local and have a look at Glass Domain, based in Birmingham. They offer stunning glass tables such as the Crack Light up coffee table with cracked mirrored exterior and coloured transparent interior. This combination of materials creates a fanatic interplay between colour and light. The coffee table can be illuminated to varying intensities with its internal dimmer lighting system. When illuminated the light cascades through the coloured glass seams that run between the shards of mirror casting tinted light across your room.

One of the significant changes being considered is for Warwickshire County Council to take over responsibility for ‘on-street’ car parking enforcement from the police in a process known as ‘decriminalisation’. This option will mean the County Council will lead on issuing tickets for on-street unlawful or inconsiderate parking, such as parking in disabled bays or on zig-zag crossing markings, as well as for exceeding parking time limits on double and single yellows and on street parking bays. The Borough Council will retain responsibility for the management of ‘off-street’ sites and we are considering all options to increase parking capacity at key locations. These include the possibility of introducing free parking time limits on borough council owned car parks to ensure that spaces are freed up at busy times, as well as ensuring considerate parking within marked bays to maximise capacity. We must be clear about how and where parking capacity can be increased, so that we find a solution that accommodates residents and people working locally, as well as short stay visitors and commercial vehicles. When we look at Coleshill there are currently 44 private car parking spaces serving the High Street. Water Orton fares a little better with 49, but neither allocation is meeting peak demands. So, what options are there besides enforcement? Well, we are already seeking to ensure that all new residential and commercial

So, what to do about parking in our towns and villages? Without doubt trying to find a parking space when popping to the shops is now a challenge, as is the growth in HGV, commercial vehicle and worker car parking on roads leading to family homes and in local laybys and roadsides. This problem needs addressing. To start North Warwickshire Borough Council has formed a working group to review options across the board. I am a member of this working group and I’ll keep you updated on progress. The growth of this problem isn’t just because we now own more cars per household than ever before. The success of our local economy means that more and more commercial vehicle movements are happening on our roads. With the expansion of ‘just-in-time’ technology it is now a common sight to see lorries parked up waiting for their allotted delivery slot. This is especially a problem along the A4097 in Curdworth, on Hams Hall and A446, and around Station Road, Roman Way and Temple Way in Coleshill.

In addition, we will look at options to create more car park spaces on existing sites and to consider if there is any scope to create new sites. However, both require land and a significant amount of funding, and I’m sure will not be welcomed by homes who might overlook these sites. It isn’t going to be easy. North Warwickshire is now the only area in Warwickshire where the police still lead on ‘on-street’ enforcement. Resource demands on police time around protecting vulnerable people now mean that car and lorry parking is proving a challenge to enforce. The County Council proposal would see the reintroduction of parking wardens who could operate as a centrally held resource to be deployed to problem locations, whether that be High Streets, residential streets or locations where parking problems are causing concerns or indeed anti-social behaviour as we occasionally see at school drop-off times. Plans are still in draft, but I am keen to help deliver an effective solution to the dangerous, illegal, and inconsiderate parking of cars, HGVs and commercial traffic in our communities. To Encourage 1 Million Bags Target & Raise Importance of Women & Heart Disease This September, the British Heart Foundation (BHF) is raising awareness of Women and Heart Disease and I want to encourage your readers to help fund life saving heart research by taking part in our Bag It. It’s a sad reality that cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes the deaths of over 6,000 women in East Midlands alone each year and there are also around 3.5 million women living with cardiovascular disease across the UK. Walk towards a cure for Parkinson’s in Warwickshire People in Warwickshire are being asked to pick up the pace against Parkinson’s this year at Walk for Parkinson’s – Packwood House on Sunday 10 September, one of a series of walk events to be held across the UK for Parkinson’s UK during 2017.

He says: “In 2016 I completed my own 200-mile Coast to Coast walk for Parkinson’s UK, it was tough but the sense of achievement when I crossed the finish line was fantastic. “2017 is going to be our most ambitious year yet for the Walk for Parkinson’s series. With every pound that we raise we get closer to a cure. So please join us at Packwood House and help us step closer to our goal of improving the lives of every person affected by Parkinson’s.

Memorial service for Jack Stuart Coleshill United Church are holding a memorial service for Jack Stuart on Sunday August 13th at 2.30pm. The service will consist of 4/5 hymns interspersed with memories of various people mainly from the local societies that Jack had founded. The service will be followed by a bring and share tea. Jack died on January 26th and a family thanksgiving service was held on Friday March 24th at the parish church, many friends and acquaintances say they did not know of that event. This event is being held in the church Jack had attended regularly for many years up until a few weeks before he died. It was felt appropriate that a memorial service on behalf of the church and the various organisations with which he was associated in the community should be held in that church.

We welcome anyone in the community who would like to come to this service in memory of Jack.
