Mike O’Brien: “The Autumn Statement showed Osbourne has now broken every promise made on the economy“ POLITICS

“The Autumn Statement shows Osborne has now failed every test of economic competence and the tories have broken every promise they made on the economy,” says Mike O’Brien.

“They promised people that their living standards would rise, but the average working family is now £1,600 a year worse off. “This is the first government in two hundred years to leave people poorer than when it came into office. In nearly every month since May 2010 prices have risen faster than wages. “The Office for Budget Responsibility has now revised its forecast for wages: down this year and down for next year! “The cost-of-living crisis has made families poorer, but it has also reduced the expected tax income to the government. This has forced the Chancellor to admit he broke his promise to balance the books by 2015. He has already borrowed £219 billion more than he planned in this Parliament. And his borrowing has been revised up by £12.5 billion this year and next. Growth is set to slow next year and the year after – and the Autumn Statement shows it has been downgraded in every year after 2016! “The Tories say if re-elected, they plan to make more cuts in public services in the next Parliament than they made in this Parliament. They say they have done 40% of their cuts and they need to do 60% of the cuts by 2017. This want even bigger cuts after the election. “So, the big question is why if things are so tight, why did millionaires have such a big tax cut last April? Why prioritise millionaires when working people are paying higher VAT? It seems to me that millionaires are the last

people who need tax cuts. After all, there’s only so much that a millionaire can buy! After a he has a big house, a big car, a few big restaurant meals, a big cigar and has paid his kids private school fees, why does he need an extra tax cut from the Tories? “Government messages are now confused. With one hand they’re giving money away to millionaires and with the other hand they have increased VAT on working people. This is not an economic plan, it’s a class based attack on working people by a Cabinet packed with millionaires. Simply put, they deliberately made Britain more unfair. “The next government will face three big problems, the deficit, the cost of living crisis and a crisis in the NHS. The Tories have no plan to tackle the cost of living crisis; no plan to save the NHS and their deficit proposal to make massive cuts after the general election lacks economic credibility because it requires the devastation of public services. “What we need is a realistic and fairer plan to deliver a recovery that works for the many and not just a few. Labour’s economic plan will raise the minimum wage, expand free childcare for working parents and cut business rates for small firms. We will balance the books in a fairer way by 2020; starting by reversing the £3 billion a year Millionaire’s Tax Cut. We will tackle the cost of living crisis by freezing energy price rises. “And Labour will save and transform our National Health Service with a fully funded long-term plan. We will raise an extra £2.5 billion a year by taxing mansions worth over £2m to deliver 20,000 more nurses and 8,000 more GPs – a commitment the Tories refuse to match.”

Coleshill Leisure Centre officially open NEWS

PHOTO: Jill Gardner

The Coleshill Post

The brand new Coleshill Leisure Centre on Packington Lane was officially opened by the Mayor of North Warwickshire, Councillor Ray Sweet on Thursday 4th December.

A joint project with The Coleshill School, the modern facility replaces the former centre on Park Road. The development was also funded through the Education Funding Agency and England Squash and Racketball. The Centre offers a large multi-purpose Sports Hall, two squash courts, a Dance Studio with a new class programme, a Fitness Suite with the latest fitness equipments and a viewing and seating gallery on the first floor. At the opening ceremony, Councillor Sweet mentioned that he had opened the original Coleshill Leisure Centre in 1982. He then thanked everyone involved in the project including Borough Council staff and Elected Members, representatives of The Coleshill School, Wates Construction, the funding agencies and local residents: “ The fact that we are now able to witness and enjoy this high quality new Leisure Centre is only possible because of the strong partnerships, commitment and support provided by

everyone who contributed to the project. Our collective task now is to ensure that this exciting facility meets the needs of the community of North Warwickshire and local school students. In this respect, we have every confi-

dence in the strength of our relationship with The Coleshill School.” Ian Smith-Childs, Head of The Coleshill School commented: “This project is a real testimony to what partnership work can do. This is a real investment in the future of the young

Cameron leads mourners at Sir William Dugdale’s funeral BY SALLY JONES David Cameron led the mourners at the funeral of one of the Midlands great characters, his “wicked uncle” Sir William Dugdale; war hero, landowner, adventurer, sportsman, businessman and former chairman of Aston Villa who has died at the age of 92.

Sir William – universally known as Bill - whose widow Cylla is the sister of the PM’s mother Mary, was remembered at a moving ceremony in the historic 13th century estate church of Our Lady across the park from Merevale Hall, the great house where he was born in 1922 into a distinguished family of mine-owners, heralds and country squires. After his decades of service to the Midlands, as chairman of the Severn Trent Water Authority and Warwickshire County Council, High Sheriff and Deputy Lieutenant of Warwickshire, over 350 mourners from every area of his long, eventful life packed into the little church where he had been Treasurer for many years. Around 300 more followed the service on closed circuit TV in an adjoining marquee. Mr Cameron arrived flanked by bodyguards and afterwards told family members that watching Aston Villa with his uncle were among his happiest boyhood memories. He remains a keen Villa supporter. The great and good of the Midlands including

3

the Earl and Countess of Aylesford from Packington, Lord and Lady Plumb and Michael and Rosemary Fetherston-Dilke from Maxstoke Castle rubbed shoulders with horseracing and football luminaries and estate workers. Sir Bill’s beloved gamekeepers arrived immaculate in Dugdale tweed knickerbockers and jackets, a reminder of his passion for country sports, particularly shooting which he continued to enjoy into his 90s. Sir Bill had planned his service himself and with typical modesty had stipulated no eulogy. Instead three of his six children from his two happy marriages including his heir Sir Matthew Dugdale gave biblical readings and there were smiles as his six grandsons read verses from the appropriately titled moral poem by Robert Southey “You are Old, Father William”. Sir Bill served with great courage in World War II in the Grenadier Guards, winning the MC and twice being mentioned in Dispatches for acts of conspicuous gallantry including the defence of the Anzio beachhead. Musicians from the band of the Grenadier Guards performed a spine-tingling rendering of 'The Last Post' and 'The Grenadiers' Return' as his medals were reverently placed on his coffin. In his sermon, Merevale’s new vicar Dr John White described how Sir Bill always made light of his many achievements and mentioned his effervescent personality, describing how “he lived life as something delicious, adventurously, passionately and aware of the One who gave it.”

people and the community of which they are a part. The Coleshill School is now fully committed to working with all stakeholders to ensure that the Leisure Centre is the massive success we all believe it will be.”

Councillor Fowler Responds NEWS

BY CLLR PETER FOWLER In response to the article about the local woman who was attacked on the evening of Sunday 26th October, I was very surprised to read that I have been accused of not responding to emails from Mr Deakin. In his email to me on the night in question Mr Deakin said that he had witnessed a robbery and a “very serious sexual assault” which had taken place in what he called “the pitch black”. He also informed me that the police had been alerted and that a man had been arrested and was in custody. I responded to Mr Deakin on the same night and informed him that I would try to speak to the police to obtain more information. Mr. Deakin thanked me for my prompt reply and gave me the name of the investigating police officer. I contacted this officer and the local police and was advised by them not to make any comment on this incident as it was an ongoing investigation. I was also given the same advice by officers at W.C.C. The council official then contacted Mr. Deakin and explained why I couldn’t make any comment. I am sorry if Mr. Deakin was unhappy with my responses. I would also like to thank Mr. M. O’Brien for finally admitting that the Labour Party have been playing party politics with the former Coleshill Police Station. Perhaps the Labour Party will now inform residents that their own County Councillors also voted for the closure under the Chief Constable’s modernisation of the Warwickshire force. I supported the Chief Constable but with the proviso that he guaranteed that there would be another Police Base in Coleshill. This is now situated in the town centre, next to the Library.

The winners of the 2014 Clean Britain Awards have been announced at an awards ceremony in Birmingham. Following a record number of entries the National Winner’s prize went to Nottingham City Council, who also picked up the Gold Award in their category for local authorities with over 200,000 residents. Amongst Nottingham’s achievements was the development of an innovative Cleansing Index Performance Target, which has led to it clearing 90% of all reported fly-tips, graffiti and dog fouling within 48 hours. It has also set a target to remove 100% of racist/offensive graffiti within 24 hours. The other Gold Award winners were North Ayrshire in the 100,000-200,000 residents category and Broxbourne Borough Council in the sub 100,000 residents division. Silver Awards were given to London Borough of Tower Hamlets, City of London Corporation and Crawley Borough Council. Bronze Awards went to London Borough of Enfield, Broadland District Council and West Lindsey District Council. The winner of this year’s Community Award sponsored by Unger (and the £500 prize donated by the CIWM) was Keeping Coleshill Clean. Keeping Coleshill Clean was established and pioneered by local resident Barbara Adams who, through her own commitment and campaigning, has made a tremendous impact in reducing litter and cleaning up graffiti in the Warwickshire market town, despite having never received a penny in funding. The Clean Britain Awards, organised by the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM)

and sponsored by Kier, recognise outstanding contributions made to the improvement of the local environment and street cleansing. The Awards are reviewed by a panel of expert and independent judges and assessed against four key criteria litter, aesthetics, waste issues and highways. Commenting on this year’s Awards, CEO of the CIWM, Steve Lee, said: “Firstly I would like to thank everyone who took the time to enter this year’s Clean Britain Awards. We are now in our 25th year and the record number of entries is evidence of the huge commitment that goes into maintaining the areas in which we live, work and play. From the UK’s largest local authorities to community groups and individuals, we have seen an unbelievable level of dedication and innovation and it is vital that we take the time to recognise and celebrate the results of their work. A well presented, safe and hygienic environment plays an important role in fostering a sense of civic pride and reducing the likelihood of antisocial behaviour. It will also help attract and sustain increased levels of commerce and tourism, which are vital to helping to sustain local businesses.” The UK spends over £1 billion a year clearing up the rubbish that we leave behind. Throughout the year Clean Britain Awards Scheme brings together local authorities, community groups and other key stakeholders to share experiences and best practice and provides a platform on which to develop and promote new initiatives. George Osborne didn’t look like Santa Claus from our point of view REGULAR COLUMN

GEORGE Osborne looked more like Mr Scrooge than Santa Claus when he stood up in Parliament last week to give his Autumn Statement. Thank you to everyone who donated a giftfilled shoebox for the school’s annual “Operation Christmas Child” appeal. The charity aims to give presents to children in communities in the grips

of poverty or following war, natural disaster, disease or famine and spread the good news of Christmas. The school wishes everyone a happy and peaceful Christmas and all the best for 2015.

The Hungry Caterpillar visits Coleshill Playgroup! COMMUNITY

He took away more than he handed out. Actually it wasn’t autumnal at all; it was a bleak and wintry forecast, predicting the next few years would bring a very cold financial climate for all of us. The Chancellor’s Autumn Statement about government finance may seem remote from you, but it isn't. It will affect you and your family. Importantly it will probably affect how much council tax you pay. If the Chancellor gets his way local government will be faced with massive cuts in 2016. Four years ago about three quarters of local government finance came from the government in a grant raised from general taxation and the rest came from the council tax. In recent years Mr Osbourne has cut North Warwickshire Borough Council’s grant by 40%. We have struggled to deal with this but we have done so successfully. There have been £30B in government cuts up to now, but the Chancellor says he wants a further £50B of cuts in the public sector. Those cuts won’t fall equally across the public sector. NHS spending and foreign aid is ring fenced, so the brunt of the cuts will come in policing, the armed services, welfare and local councils. This is not about some councillors sitting in

Young children at Coleshill Playgroup were treated to a free Yoga session thanks to Lisa Colclough of Sole 2 Soul Yoga (www.sole2soulyoga.co.uk).

Lisa told the story of the Hungry Caterpillar in Yoga moves and the children joined in! As the hungry caterpillar grew from an egg into a caterpillar he woke up hungry every morning and each day a different animal gave him food. The children copied Lisa and really enjoyed the story – which was evident by their enthusiasm. Some of the moms attended and took part in the session too. They finished by turning into a beautiful butterfly! Lisa runs a wide variety of Yoga lessons including kids and adult sessions locally and at her purpose built Yoga Studio in Nether Whitacre including personal sessions, workshops and the use of aerial yoga swings. She donates 20% of her takings from kids’ classes to local children’s charities. Yoga tones your whole body, increases strength and flexibility

and improves balance, as well as teaching you how to relax your body and mind. If you would like to know more please call her on 07919 924 883. Dawn and Nicky who run Coleshill Playgroup were thrilled that the children were so captured by the story and how easily they copied the poses. They offer places for 2-4 year olds on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings in the Community Centre, Roman Way, B46 1HN. “Our sessions offer a caring and nurturing environment, ideal for a child’s ‘1st steps’ into nursery” explains Dawn. Open Morning Dawn and Nicky are holding an open morning on Thursday 29th January from 10 – 11am at the Community Centre and if you would like to go along you will be able to see the facilities and the care that they offer. If you can’t make that date please call them on 07891 843 657 during Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings to discuss your child and organise a visit at a time to suit you!

the Council Chambers in Atherstone. This is about you. It’s your council tax, your child’s school, your local park used by your children, your leisure centre, your local library, the help for your disabled neighbour or the care home for your elderly relative. It’s easy to vaguely talk about “cuts”, but they do hurt real people. The Chancellor wants more austerity in the next Parliament. In 2010 he promised to balance the books before the 2015 election. He has now borrowed £219 billion more than he planned in this Parliament and borrowing has been revised up by £12.5 billion this year and next. Paying the deficit has been put off. Growth is also forecast to slow next year and has been downgraded after 2016. Things have gone badly for him. So Mr Osborne says he wants to tighten the screws even more. Of course, a lot depends on which government is elected. But, if he has his way, Mr Osborne promises a protracted squeeze for all of us. The fact is that North Warwickshire Borough Council has been better at managing our budgets than Mr Osborne. Since 2011 we have made dramatic savings and kept services and not put up your council tax. But we have cut to the bone. It’s been hard but we have done it. This year we hope to continue our strong local record. But beyond this year, if George Osborne gets his way, by 2016 we are going to struggle to carry on without hitting the public services that your family depend upon. Mr Osborne’s Christmas present to local councils and local families was bad news.

A year of progress but the real battle of ideas is just beginning

Cllr Adam Farrell

Coleshill Town Councillor REGULAR COLUMN

It’s hard to believe it but another year is nearly over! As we head towards the second half of this decade it’s right that we reflect on what’s happened in our town over the last 12 months.

In January I wrote my column on the need for progress this year on the big issues facing our town. So what’s happened over the past 12 months? We’ve seen the new Leisure Centre open with first class facilities for both the public and our young people. It’s worth visiting Google and searching how many councils have built new leisure center’s recently. There aren’t many so we should be proud that our Borough Council has made such a positive commitment to our town. Local traders have continued to come together through Love Coleshill to bring life back to our High Street through events, markets and joint promotion. Most recently we saw the Christmas Late Night Opening bring hundreds into the town to visit the ice rink and reindeers! The Love Coleshill French Market brought hundreds of people into our town and the food was pretty good too! The Discover Coleshill website was launched with thousands visiting the site to find out about our town. The new Visitor Centre opened on Church Hill and already thousands have been through the doors to Discover Coleshill. The Civic Society invested in a new digital touchscreen display after a very generous donation by Dr Jack and Beena Stuart. Now hundreds of photos of Coleshill can be seen by all with the touch of a screen. The Town Council began a consultation on the Memorial Park with plans due out early next year. The Cricket Club secured tens of thousands of pounds from various funders to refurbish the Memorial Park Centre. This will provide better sporting opportunities for hundreds of young people in the years to come. The Borough Council continued their development of Cole End Park to create a nature reserve, which hundreds of local people have been involved in and have benefited from. A new business-networking group: Business46 continued to grow and is now helping many businesses trade locally. Cllr Bill Richards has continued to lead the Neighborhood Plan with plans to put it to a referendum in 2015. The development of Father Hudson’s has begun after two decades of neglect. New community groups and charities have flourished such as the Community First Responders and the Coleshill Community Partnership. Our first community allotment was opened by the charity behind the Coleshill Hub. We came together as a town to mark 100 years since the beginning of WW1 with a candlelit vigil, a book launch and various exhibitions and events. We marked Remembrance Sunday with the town’s usual respect and gratitude to those who have gave their lives to enable us to live ours. We continued to grow closer as a community through various Facebook groups including B46 Community, which now has over 1000 members. The Town came together to oppose the development at Daw Mill but we know the threat is not yet over. Too often we only hear negatives about our town. It’s only right we celebrate our town as probably the best place to live in the world. In 2015 we should build on this success and begin to tackle the bigger issues facing our town. I don’t need to remind you that there has been no progress on police presence, street lighting, parking, public transport, traffic and the ever-rising cost of housing. In just a few months time there will be a general, borough and town council election on the same day. The first time this has happened for decades! This is an opportunity too good to miss. It will be up to candidates to set out their vision for the town and it will be up to you to vote for the candidates best placed to deal with the threats to our town.. So as we end a very busy year of progress and enter a new busy period, can I take this opportunity to wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

The Coleshill Post - December 2014- Issue 17

Beeline introduces charging changes BEELINE Community Transport will be introducing new charging arrangements in the New Year. Each year Beeline’s volunteer drivers take approximately 800 clients to and from 3500 medical appointments. They travel approximately 100,000 miles in a year. The service represents good value for money for people who would otherwise have no way of getting to their appointments. Over the past 12 months Beeline’s grant funding has been very significantly reduced and the charity must become more self-sufficient. Treasurer, John Glover, said, “We would like all our clients to be aware that as from Monday 5th January 2015, we are introducing an administrative charge of £2 per journey in ad-

dition to the 45p/mile that they are currently paying. We are taking this step very reluctantly but our priority is to ensure the continuation of the service while providing the best value to clients that we can achieve.” The Journey Fee will be collected by the drivers at the end of the journey, i.e.: when the driver drops the client back at his or her home. If anyone has any queries about the new charges, our current funding, booking a journey and would like to volunteer then please phone 01827 717074. We always welcome new drivers but also need volunteers to help us increase our fundraising capacity. There is also more information about the service on our website www.beelinect.org.uk.

Residents beware: use approved waste carriers or risk prosecution

TWO flytipping prosecutions heard at Nuneaton Magistrates Court this week have emphasised the importance of using registered waste carriers to dispose of household rubbish.

In the first case, Ms Minaxiben Patel of Meadow Avenue, West Bromwich was ordered to pay £442.24 costs and given six months conditional discharge after pleading guilty to the charge. Earlier this year, the Borough Council’s Grounds Maintenance Team collected around 20 bags of rubbish, which had been flytipped on farmland in Stonehouse Lane, Arley. On investigation, items contained in the bags led to an interview with Ms Patel’s tenant, who explained that her landlady had arranged for the rubbish to be removed.

Ms Patel said that she had used the individual before to clear garden waste but had been unaware that he should have a waste carrier’s licence. She pleaded guilty in court. In the second case, an eagle eyed Arley resident spotted between15-20 bags of waste dumped on Ansley Lane, Ansley. When they checked the contents, they found items relating to an address on Gun Hill. It was then discovered that Ms Lauren Dewar, currently of Grove Road, Nuneaton, had lived at this property at the time of the offence. When interviewed, Ms Dewar admitted that she had advertised on Facebook for someone to remove her rubbish but had not retained any contact details to trace the individual. Ms Dewar also pleaded guilty and was given a six month conditional discharge and ordered to pay £195

costs. Steve Maxey, Assistant Chief Executive and Solicitor to the Council ,said: “ These prosecutions send out a very clear message to residents that they should check that anyone removing their rubbish has the correct paperwork and is an authorised waste carrier.” “ If the rubbish is flytipped and traced back to the resident, they will face prosecution, a fine and a criminal record, as they have a ‘duty of care’ to dispose of their rubbish safely and within the law. At this time of year and with more waste expected to accumulate over the Christmas period, it’s even more important that people follow this advice and avoid a flytipping fine. “ To report flytipping in confidence, go to www.northwarks.gov.uk/litter or ring the Borough Council on 01827 715341.

“Labour would cut the deficit every year whilst securing the future of the NHS. Our manifesto commitments will not require additional borrowing,” Mike O’Brien said as Labour set out the first pledge for 2015 in a speech by Party Leader Ed Miliband.

Explaining the policy to party members in Bedworth Mike O’Brien said, “This announcement is important because Labour has set out a realistic plan to balance the books by 2020. Local people can be assured that we have an achievable timetable of getting the current budget into surplus and national debt falling within the 5 years of the next Parliament. Day to day spending by government will be under control. “We won’t follow George Osbourne in trying to do everything by 2017 by imposing extreme austerity. Having broken his promise to remove the deficit by 2015, he now says he can impose greater pain in the next two years than he has imposed so far. That lacks cred-

ibility and would involve such brutal cuts that it would decimate public services like the police. “The Tories are ideologically obsessed with borrowing. Of course, the deficit is an important problem, but the Tories have ignored two other problems. Many families in North Warwickshire and Bedworth face a cost-of-living crisis and there is also an NHS crisis, for example George Eliot Hospital is £12m in debt. The next government needs to address all three problems in a balanced way, not just one of them. “On the deficit Labour will protect working people by ensuring those with the broadest shoulders bear the great-

Michael Gove opens new Conservative office in Coleshill Cabinet Minister Michael Gove was in Coleshill last week to open North Warwickshire Conservatives’ new office on Coleshill High Street.

Craig Tracey, the local Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, who invited Mr Gove said: “We were very pleased to welcome Michael Gove for our official office opening. He spent a long time talking with local members. It was great for them to get the opportunity to discuss the issues local residents are raising on the doorstep and report them directly back to Government.” Michael Gove said: “This office in the centre of Coleshill will be a great local HQ for the Conservative Party in North Warwickshire. Craig Tracey is clearly spending a huge amount of time speaking with residents about issues that are important to them and helping to resolve these issues. I wish Craig all the best for his general election campaign – he will make a fine local champion.” For any local issues the Conservative office can be contacted on 01675 628605 or by email; office@conservatives.co.uk.

est burden. That means those the top will pay more. Labour will reverse the 50p millionaires’ tax cut and introduce a mansion tax on properties worth over £2m. “Labour will only promise new policies that are fully funded and do not require any additional borrowing – except major infrastructure projects. “With exceptions Labour will reduce departmental budgets each year until we have balanced the books. We will also use money better by devolving power, breaking down old bureaucracies and rebuilding public services around early intervention. “On the cost of living crisis, Labour will address the culture of low wages, insecure jobs, zero hours contracts and social failure that has resulted in welfare spending rising above planned levels and tax revenues falling. “Labour will tackle energy prices, increase the minimum wage, reform the banks and transform vocational education. Our agenda for economic change is about big reform, not big spending. “On the NHS we will create a £2.5 billion ‘Time to Care Fund’ for the NHS aimed at training more doctors and nurses funded by a mansion tax on homes worth over £2m. “Ours is a balanced approach based on realism rather than ideology. We want to create a Britain that is more prosperous, but also more fair and less divided. We will deal with the deficit to create the strong economic foundation needed to build prosperity for working people.”

Coleshill and District U3A THE Round the World Yacht Race looks very exciting but who would have thought that so much time, effort, organisation and work would be needed before the yacht race even started.

An aspect of this was that provisions had to be carefully planned so everyone got a balanced diet but the weight did not impair the speed of the yacht and although some sailors would need three months of clothes, their allowance was only twenty kilos excluding boots. At our November meeting, Malcolm Evans, who was a crew member on the yacht Switzerland, described his experiences. Malcolm had little history of sailing, indeed forty per cent of the crew had never raced in a yacht before, therefore there was three days of extensive and rigorous training beforehand. The yacht was seventy foot long, weighed thirty two tons, fifty tons laden and had ten sails. Sleeping accommodation was limited and if you were tall, quite cramped. Each crew member had various roles to play and a rota to follow, but in emergency situations it was all hands on deck. After meeting their skipper, a diminutive lady, and other crew members, one of them a seventy year old baker, the adventure began on the first of September 2013 from St Katharine Docks in front of Tower Bridge, London. Twelve matched boats began with a Parade of Sails, and after racing forty thousand miles, visiting fourteen ports on six continents in the worlds longest ocean race, they would return in July 2014. Malcolm crewed for two legs of the race, sailing through the Bermuda triangle and passing over the area where the Titanic sank. He described some of the hair raising moments they encountered when expertise was tested as the crew encountered challenging seas, changing weather conditions and everything else the elements could throw at them I think that he with other crew members must have had incredible bravery and determination and must be applauded for the incredible journey they completed. Thank you Malcolm for a very interesting and informative talk but I won't be applying to be a crew member next time. Should anyone out there fancy taking part in the 2015 Round the World Yacht Race you should apply fairly soon. If you are retired or semi retired and would like to meet like minded people and listen to interesting speakers like Malcolm, please come a long to one of our meetings on the third Monday of the month at 10.30 at Coleshill Town Hall. However our next meeting is on 15 December at 11.30 when we have our Christmas bring and share lunch. Full details of our group are on our website, www.coleshillanddistrictu3a.org.uk, be sure to look at the blog for further information.

This was Coleshill’s annual meeting and members brought in ten Christmas Child boxes of presents for deprived children overseas. Secretary Brenda Sheard and Treasurer Gill Tyers gave full reports on the year’s activities and financial position. Members had enjoyed a variety of talks and our speakers were usually asked to judge the monthly competition. The WI’s finances are in good order although we do need to look for ways to boost our income. President Christine Jones thanked all the committee members for their hard work and loyal support, especially Brenda Sheard for her dedication and efficiency as Secretary. She is retiring after numerous spells in the post including the last three years and our longest-serving committee member Joy Hancock is also taking a break but both will still be on hand to give us the benefit of their experience. Christine Jones was re-elected as President. Sue Hyde was the one newcomer to the committee and was later elected as Secretary. We enjoyed a crochet session with beginners taught by

These were hard, non-perishable “delicacies” sent by Australian and New Zealand families to their troops during the First World War. Elaine Partridge won it with Christine Jones second and Mal Downes third. Sue Hyde and Christine Jones won the draw for bursaries to attend a course at Denman College next year. What the Autumn Statement means for families in North Warwickshire & Bedworth

The Coleshill Post

POLITICS

By Craig Tracey Conservative PPC

his week the Chancellor TStatement delivered his Autumn which showed that

the UK is the fastest-growing major economy in the world and which reported higher growth, lower unemployment, falling inflation and a falling deficit.

This may seem all well and good, but what were the key announcements and do they really mean for residents of North Warwickshire & Bedworth? The first piece of good news was released ahead of the statement; with the Chancellor pledging an extra £2billion a year funding for the NHS, on top of that we will also use an additional £1.1billion in fines from the banks who took advantage of society to invest in local GP services to give patients access to advanced care. This extra funding is great news for our local hospital, the George Eliot. There was also an announcement of major infrastructure projects for the region which will see an unprecedented £1.4bn invested in the Midlands road network. This is a major boost for businesses and social travellers alike, increasing our accessibility and connectivity. The headline grabbing measure centred around the long overdue reform of the Stamp Duty system. Simply put, currently, when you pay Stamp Duty on the purchase of a house, you pay the full amount of the rating bracket you are in, irrespective of whether you are £1 or £1000 over the previous threshold. Under the new system, which is similar to how

income tax is calculated, you will only pay the higher rate on the amount which falls in to that band. This will benefit almost everyone who is buying a house, but especially first time and lower value property buyers. 98% of families in North Warwickshire & Bedworth will significantly benefit from this measure saving an average of £4500 when moving home. Also announced was the raising of the tax free personal allowance to £10,600 in April. This will lift 38,000 of the lowest paid people in our region out of tax completely and ensure thousands of others keep more of their hard earned cash. Protection of Small Business is something I am very keen on and their part in being the driving force of the recovery should never be understated. It was pleasing, therefore, that the Chancellor recognised this with an extension of the doubling of Small Business Rate Relief and a cap on the increase of future rates at 2%. High Street shops and cafes will benefit from an increase in their discount by 50%, from £1,000 to £1,500. Finally, as a backing to the aspiration to work and save, husbands and wife’s will be able to inherit their partners ISA and keep its tax free status. This Autumn statement is very encouraging and shows that the difficult decisions that the Government has had to make over the last 4 years in order to bring economic stability is working. This has allowed us to further support our NHS, lower paid workers and first time buyers in North Warwickshire & Bedworth.

Cllr Ray Sweet

Deputy Leader of NWBC

F

His two operations were a success. He will be off work for a month or so but then plans to get back; perhaps in a wheelchair for a while. He is keeping in constant contact with me about what’s happening at the council. He’s in the loop. Today I want to report on how we are tackling a scandal: over 887 privately owned houses lay empty in North Warwickshire when we did a survey in 2013. 445 were empty for over 6 months; some were empty for over a year and a few for over a decade. Some are beautiful properties, going to rack and ruin. These homes are left vacant for many reasons. An elderly owner may be taken into care; a family may have gone overseas; it was bought as an investment but never done up and sold; it’s being kept empty for use at some future date; the owners lack money to fund repairs; it’s offered for sale at an unrealistic price; or the owner was been refused a planning consent and thinks by leaving it go derelict the council will do what the owner wants and might change its mind – we won’t. At a time when the Council has been told by David Cameron that we must build

Council acting on the blight of empty houses thousands of houses in this borough, empty properties are a terrible wasted resource. These properties often fall into disrepair, are a target for anti social behaviour, including arson and criminal damage. The grounds of an empty property can become overgrown. Sometimes the homes end up on fire. All this can cause severe problems to neighbours, the police and the fire service. The Council is now reducing the long term empty properties in the borough. A property is defined as "long term" empty when it has been empty for 6 months This is a difficult and sensitive area: owners often resent Council intervention. An elderly person may have been in care for years but would like to retain the possibility of one day returning home and their relatives may not like the council ending that dream; even if it is unrealistic. Sometimes we struggle to find the owner. We had to work hard to find the owner of some former Coal Board houses in Arley after

they were passed to property companies and had been sold several times. We offer owners advice, financial help and if needed, we use enforcement powers. The Council employed Project Officer to deal with the empty homes with the aim of tackling the worst offending empty properties that blight local communities. A list of empty properties that is regularly updated from council tax records, but this may not always reflect the exact number in the borough, so we need local people to tell us when a local house has been empty for several months. We remind the owner they face Council Tax and insurance but also that they are missing out on rental income, which can be over £5000 a year. Owners now pay more Council Tax. It's 75% of council tax for one occupier, but 100% for being vacant and 150% if vacant for over 2 years. The Council aims to help owners to turn a problem into profit. There is a private Sector Leasing Scheme,

Vintage 76: The brand new retro shop for Coleshill

Vintage 76 is a new shop that has just opened in Coleshill High Street by Julie Jones who lives nearby in Water Orton. Julie explains: “I have always had a passion for all things vintage. Over the years I have collected the things that I like from vintage and antique fairs. During the Summer I held stalls at Water Orton Carnival, Whitacre and Shustoke show and Wild Cherry’s Vintage and Gift Fair. I was amazed at the positive feedback that I received, people asking how they

could purchase my items. I have always wanted my own premises and when the shop in Angel Mews became available I thought that this was a great opportunity.” Vintage 76 stocks vintage style clothing, jewellery, handbags, mirrors, nik naks and gift ideas. “Since opening I have been very pleased with the reaction and comments from people visiting the shop who share my passion for anything vintage. I was especially pleased to see so many people at the late night opening event on 29th November. I am a little tucked away from the main High Street and hidden by scaffolding at present, but hopefully people will continue to visit now that they know where I am. I have new stock arriving each week so I will have something for everyone's taste. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of my customers a very happy Christmas and a big thank you for all of the support you have given in my new venture.”

£150

where the owner leases the property to the Council, which then sub-lets to a tenant. This guarantees a landlord a monthly income. Owners may be offered up to £5000 in interest free loans to renovate long term empty properties for sale or rent, if used in conjunction with the Private Sector Leasing Scheme. The loan must be used to render the property in a condition to be marketed within a month. If the loan is used in conjunction with any of the Private Sector leasing Schemes then 20% can be given as a grant. Up to £1,500 per house is available on some energy saving items for loft insulation, cavity wall insulation and hot water system insulation Our interventions helped to bring 55 back into use in 2012/13 and 189 in 2013/14. Recently, we have used private sector leasing to bring 14 long term empties back into use. Most notably 5 in Dordon and we are a long way down the track with empty houses in Hurley too. We have used our loan scheme for 5 properties and some have been sold and others have had occupiers move back in. Long term empty homes are a blight and a waste. People need homes and as a council we will do all we can to get the owners to let or sell the homes they are not occupying.

Role model Dr Karen inspires youngsters to look to the stars Former Coleshill School pupil wins prestigious award

KIND hearted restaurant owner, Joinal Abdin, recently donated £500 to Midlands Emergency Response at his Curdworth restaurant, Ramadan. On hand to accept the donation was Tony Battle and Darren Tranter who are both heavily involved volunteers with the organisation. Mayor of Coleshill, Harry Taylor chose MER as his charity during his current Mayoral term. He commented: “MER is an amazing charity. It’s highly trained volunteers give up most of their spare time to provide life saving support to the Emergency services. They are called upon day and night to attend all manor of incidents including serious road

traffic accidents and cardiac arrests. They receive no funding at all from anywhere and are responsible for supplying their own equipment, clothing and even fuel. The money kindly donated by Mr Abdin is much needed and very welcome.” Mr Abdin told us: “I wanted to give something back to the community which has supported us so much since we opened earlier this year. The MER seemed like the perfect way to do that as they provide a vital service to the whole community.” For more information on MER visit http://www.mercfr.org/. BY MIKE WALPOLE A former Coleshill student has won this year’s science category of the Women of the Future Awards.

Dr Karen Masters is a former Coleshill School and Coleshill CE Primary School pupil and now a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and senior lecturer in the University of Portsmouth’s Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation. The awards, issued by Women of the Future, identify the UK's most inspiring women 35 and under. Their aim is to unearth and recognise the stars of tomorrow across diverse industries, acknowledging talented women early in their careers and creating positive role models for school girls. The award recognises her research into understanding how galaxies form and evolve over the history of the universe. On the same day, Karen and women from around the world gathered at the BBC in London for this year’s 100 Women event, launched last year as part of the BBC’s pledge to represent women better in its international news output. Dr Masters said: "It’s a real honour to be recognised alongside this group of extraordinary women. I’m delighted that the Women of the Future Awards include this science category; it highlights how important it is for women to be part of our scientific culture. "I’m passionate about demonstrating that science is for everyone. I do this through my work with the citizen science project, Galaxy Zoo, in which more than 400,000 people help my research on galaxies, and through helping to encourage young women (as well as men) to consider science as an exciting, creative and important area to study." Karen is the Project Scientist for Galaxy Zoo so most of her research time is spent combining classi-

fications from this project with other data to study galaxy evolution - a long way from her first exposure to public engagement as a summer planetarium operator in 1998. Karen added: “As a mother of two young children I am interested in how to present astronomy to very young children. “I often visit schools or give schools talks on campus about astronomy. I like to talk about the planets in our our solar system as an accessible way to introduce the vast scale of the Universe to younger children. I also have talks suitable for older age groups about how we use the electromagnetic spectrum to view the Universe. “I have developed a colour-in scale solar system model: you can fit the Sun and all the planets on a single sheet of A4 then, cut them out and space them over a bit more than half a mile for the proper orbits. Typically you can only fit the Sun, Mercury, Venus and (with some squeezing) the Earth in the classroom. I think that really impresses the kids.” The activity can be downloaded via: http:// thebeautifulstars.blogspot.co.uk/2011/03/astronomy-for-young-children-colour.html Karen’s expertise is also often asked for by television and radio - she appears in the June 2014 episode of the Sky at Night, talking about galaxy merging. She is married to fellow astronomer Dr Wynn Ho, lecturer at the University of Southampton, whose primary research interests are in theoretical and high-energy astrophysics, especially making computer models of the extreme physics found in compact stellar remnants like neutron stars. http://icg.port.ac.uk/~mastersk/ http://womenofthefuture.co.uk http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-29758792 www.galaxyzoo.org

Children in Need surprise visit to The Gate

The Coleshill Post

Childhood hero an inspiration to fund-raiser and restaurateur Paul Bryan LOCAL NEWS

BY PAUL BRYAN ONE quiet Wednesday afternoon in the beautiful English Countryside, the coldness of November filling the air outside and the fires burning away to welcome the customers.

The phone rang during service, it was the BBC, so they said! It was a busy service and the call asking if the film crew had arrived lost us in translation, it wasn't till a small bald man appeared in the bar an hour later asking for me, that I knew it wasn't a hoax. Children in Need were coming to a quiet little country pub at the heart of Nether Whitacre, The Gate. Matt Baker, a childhood hero of mine from the days of Blue Peter and in my later days Countryfile, was completing the Rickshaw Challenge from one end of the country to the BBC studios in the centre of London, travelling with a group of fantastic Children, each with their own unique stories and reasons to be completing the challenge and they were going to pit stop at The Gate. Catering vans and caravans soon lined the car park and an entourage of supporters had gathered. Excitement was building!. A warm welcome of cheers filled the car park as the children and Matt arrived, they arrived as hero's. We chatted and celebrated their amazing achievement. The kids had many stories and each was strong and determined to complete the challenge, in the face of everyday life these kids struggle to survive and fit in yet they were the most positive and determined children, a true inspiration to us

THE

all. Matt was possibly one of the nicest people I have ever met, his determination and drive to help these kids continue their quest was amazing. The pitstop lasted for around an hour, fed and watered, physio completed and joined by Paralympian Anna Turney, the gang set off for the final leg of their journey towards Coventry. Collection buckets full and a last push of support for their onward journey. Children in Need came to The Gate and they left refreshed. We were left humbled and thankful in many ways, for these children really are the children in need, tho through courage and strength, determination and support the thrived to achieve the impossible. It was a joy on Friday evening to watch the kids enter Elstree Studios and Albert square, for a moment they the the most famous kids in the land, proud of their achievement and the money that they raised. We smiled proudly at The Gate, thankful that we could help them on their way.

CHARITY

TROTTING with the fox and shaking our Charleston's, Jazz came to town and all in the name of charity!

Raising funds in the modern day world has become a challenge in everyday existence. There is always a cause or a charity vying for that spare change in your pocket or your commitment to help in someway. Time and cash is precious to us. We work so hard in the modern day world to provide for our own that sometimes a good cause can get over looked, but without that cause, life for some would barely be an existence. So we were set and decided to roar back to the 1920's, a November night full of jazz and fun, the venue, down a darkened country lane, Maxstoke Golf Club and it shone as our beacon of hope. The j a z z club was open. The party started at 7.30 with a delicious supper of the golf clubs delicious homemade pie and chips, the drinks were flowing and the party mood growing. After supper, I was delighted to welcome Function

Van Rental At Crazy Prices

Seasons Greetings

Jazz to floor, a group of exceptionally talented young men, who's skills and passion with their instruments danced in our ears, it was music from an era I wasn't accustomed to but we did not disappoint, the girls dancing with their flapper dresses and the men as gangsters, or in their 1920's shirts and no one could mistake my gold jacket, we danced and raised. An old fashioned sweet shop with delights of fudge and humbugs, name the giant panda, roll the £1 at the bottle & more importantly the raffle with many prizes donated by local companies, with thanks to The Coleshill Post, helped to take the pounds out of pockets and into the charity bucket. The jazz played and we danced and drank the night away, all in the name of charity of course! With a quiz night supported by all the locals at The Gate on the Sunday evening our total fundraising for the Birmingham Children's Hospital and Woodlands School in Coleshill, we raised an amazing £1193.85 to be split between the two. What I can truly say? Although times maybe hard for many, when charity comes calling, family, friends and customers do not disappoint. With sincere thanks to all those who donated, attended and jazzed the night away, to Maxstoke Golf Club our venue, without any of you our jazz hands would have been flat.

The Love Coleshill Market on 29th November, held at The Old Market Hall / Visitor Centre was a great success, especially for the children with some wonderful face painting and the ‘Find the Panto characters quiz’ along the High Street.

The mini-beasts roadshow was a huge attraction with all manner of creepy crawlies, reptiles and spiders. The Church Choir provided some Christmas cheer with renditions of many traditional carols.

Many retailers hid minature pantomime characters within their window displays for children to find. The winners are Rishika Dunputh, Naomi and Joshua Rose and Leo, Leigh and Rayone. On 4th December the Love Coleshill Late Night Shopping event attracted the highest number of visitors yet through the doors of the Visitor Centre, our highest footfall to date.

A Christmas message from Councillor Dom Ferro BY CLLR DOM FERRO

The Coleshill Post

IT'S Christmas again and I'm sure, like me, you are busy doing the Christmas shopping and getting the house and family ready for the festive season.

I was so pleased to have been able to buy some great festive treats and pressies on the Love Coleshill late night opening. The shops

united and succeeded in making the night a memorable evening for residents and visitors to Coleshill. Well done Love Coleshill! and I'm looking forward to attending next years Christmas shopping event. Coleshill is a town that unites together to make events like this so good and Love Coleshill are working hard to bring visitors to our Market Town. This year has seen many additions to our High Street, including a Visitors Centre at

the Market Hall and lots of new and exciting businesses. Christmas is a time when we get together with family and friends, we exchange gifts, we send cards to friends who we haven't seen for sometime and we have too much food. But let us not forget those that struggle at this time of year. The North Warwickshire food banks are going to be working hard over Christmas delivering food hampers to families all over North Warwickshire who can't afford a Christmas meal. Thanks should go to the volunteers that are helping with the distribution of food. Something that I love about Christmas is how it brings people together and this year especially, we should remember the famous Christmas football match that took place 100 years ago during the first world war. Two

sides fighting against each other put down their weapons and they played football, against the orders of the High Command. Historical records state that the different armies exchanged food and gifts and had some Christmas cheer, but by the end of the day they went back to their trenches and the firing started again on Boxing day. This just shows how differences can be put aside during this special time of year! In Coleshill we are doing our bit to commemorate and remember those from Coleshill that fought in the Great War. Thanks to Coleshill Remembers who have gathered so much information and put on commemorative events in Coleshill. I hope that you all have a happy and peaceful Christmas. Best Wishes, Cllr Dom Ferro

On Saturday 18th October 2014, Grimscote Manor Hotel held their annual charity function, in aid of The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, The Mercian Regiment, Coleshill British Legion and Tamworth British Legion. These are four organisations that all play a vital part in helping our injured servicemen and women and also their families through the difficult times which they can suffer. Over 110 guests attended the spectacular evening, which included a 3 course meal, cabaret, disco and raffle.

We would like to welcome our new stylist

Laura Smith

The cabaret was performed by a female singer of great voice, Emma Lori and the disco was hosted by Dave Scott; both of whom very kindly gave their services free of charge. Somewhere in the region of 50 raffle prizes were generously donated by local businesses from Coleshill and Tamworth to help the cause, and the raffle succeeded in raising nearly £600. The owners of Grimscote Manor Hotel, Steve and Gillian donated all the evenings’ profits to the four different organisations, split equally between them, including all staffs wages. The total amount raised was a staggering £3,000.00. David & Patricia Woodward, who are the official, local representatives for this charity, will be arranging a special bequest from Steve and Gillian; they have asked for Christmas vouchers to be distributed equally between the four organisations, for them to then distribute to people in their local communities. These vouchers were kindly organised with the help of Asda Tamworth.

Official Stockists

The evening was a World War One themed ball, with optional WW1 style dress and was a great success. It was attended by the Mayors of Coleshill and North Warwickshire along with many other officers from the Mercian Regiment and Royal British Legions. Steve, Gillian and all the staff at Grimscote Manor Hotel would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who attended the evening and made it the huge success it was, as well as those who very kindly donated a raffle prize. The final, special thank you goes to David and Patricia Woodward who were a major part of organising the event. They do not receive the recognition they deserve as they are an extremely caring couple who live truly selfless lives.

With help from new friends in France

F

or those who are familiar with the book In My Father's Foot Steps which chronicles a Soldiers first hand experiences serving in The Great War, you may have noticed that there are blank pages at the back. Those pages are privided so that the reader can add to a living history book. The book attracted a lot of attention during my recent trip to the French town of Mazingarbe and led to several requests for a French translation. Hence why we have managed to gather the following new information: 1. Story The Farmer's Wife, page 57 The farmer, his wife and three daughters, were moved by the French authorities to another farm, called Margot at Bois de mont in 1917. The farm with yard was where the 216th Company Royal Engineers kept their wagons and horses/mules. In 1917 this farm was turned into a Hospitial Ambulance Station. With regards to the family they had a hard time during the German occupation in the Second World War. Now this large family are well and successful. 2) The Windmill at Bouvigny, Page 53 There where 2 windmills at Bouvigny. The photoof the windmill shown in the book was shelled by the Germans on the 13th March 1916. the second windmill, we are told, was a range finder for the Germans. It explains why father was worriedthat the Germans might shell the windmill that he was preparing to donate. The historians at Bouvigny have sent me a photo of the second windmill at Bouvigny/Gouy, which is called Bozotot, which was blown up by th 216th Company RE on the 1st April 1916. The miller's house would have been on the left, not shown on the photo. The windmill dates back to 1669 and it was M. Alexander Bonnel in 1916 was told by the french authorities to move. I have told the mueseum of the 216th Company that they have the wrong photo and they will be given the new photograph. 3) Souchez and Cabaret Rouge. Pages 65- 69 This place my father described as hell! The 216th Co.RE. Destroyed 2 mines because the Germans were digging a tunnel towards them. The following information is from the historians at Souche. a) The name Cabaret Rouge comes from the famous restaurant about 1 mile away from Souchez centre. It was the scene or area of fierce fighting from October 1914 to April 1917. The loss of French ran into many hundereds of thousands lives. Followed then by the loss of many British and Canadian lives in 1916/1917. b) Souchez. This place was embarrassment to the French authorities because at first they let the Germans take or walk into souchez as they thought the area was not important. The Germans took all the high ground and the main cross routes from Bethune to Arras. The map shows the high ground and part of the trench network. A modern photograph showing the trenches taken from the road d125. And part of the Valley des Lovaves. The clearly marked trench was the German front line. Afew yads to the left were the old French trench. The land from the Germn trench to the left was No-mans- land. Follow the stone and hedge field boundary to the left is where the 216ths dug the two two tunnels.

Coventry based Polar Explorer wows St Edwards pupils with tales of his adventures

As part of GRITIT’s Safe Steps initiative GRITIT’s brand ambassador for education, Mark Wood, has been visiting schools across the country to talk about his adventures in some of the coldest places on earth.

The Safe Steps campaign offered UK schools the chance to win a grit bin to keep teachers and pupils safe during the winter months, as well as an overall prize for five schools to have an assembly taken by a real life polar explorer. St Edwards RC Primary in Coleshill were one of the five lucky winners and recently enjoyed an assembly in which Coventry

based Mark talked about how he prepares for the harshest climates on the planet, as well as demonstrating the equipment he uses on his expeditions. Pupils were educated about the hazards of adverse weather, helping them to understand the extreme nature of their planet and the importance of staying safe and warm in the cold. Editor of The Coleshill Post, Richard Harwood commented: “Mark is a really inspirational figure. The children were gripped by his stories of survival, extreme cold and the dangers of Polar Bears. His presentation was superb, his slideshow and videos really

New beds mark centenary COLESHILL IN BLOOM

CIVIC SOCIETY

The Coleshill Post

BASED upon the Townsend family’s memoir, Wartime Memories of a Coleshill Family, Coleshill Civic Society gave a lecture entitled ‘Reflections on the Great War’.

THE Coleshill in Bloom committee was very keen to be involved in the centenary commemorations and so this year’s displays all followed a red, white and blue theme.

Not only have they worked tirelessly to maintain more than forty planters but have also created two new beds to mark the centenary of the outbreak of The Great War. The first, inspired by a WWI trench, is situated by Morrisons and contains red poppies, white ox-eye daisies and blue cornflowers. Generously funded and created by Maureen and Barry Gascoigne, the bed will develop in future years as the current flowers seed and further plants are added. Residents will have noticed that Coleshill in Bloom’s second bed, situated by the war memorial, was completed in time for Remembrance Sunday with the addition of new signage and replicas of the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal and the Victory Medal. These three medals were affectionately known after the war as Pip, Squeak and Wilfred. Peter Fowler, Michael Ford-Terry, Derek Axe and Mark Jones led the project to create a red poppy out of red cyclamen and black mondo grass. Coleshill in Bloom would like to thank Attention 2 Detail Building Ltd, Classic IT; W. R. & J, Collins Ltd, Blacksmiths and Forgemasters; Gascoigne’s of Coleshill; Lyndon Scaffolding; Melbicks Garden Centre; SITA; the Yardley branch of SELCO; Stechford Glass and Walnut Tree Nursery for kindly donating the materials which made the project possible. If you would like to join Coleshill in Bloom, sponsor a planter or could assist in any way, please contact Peter Fowler on 07710 317782 or via their website at http://www.coleshillinbloom.org.uk/ In turn Coleshill Remembers would like to thank Coleshill in Bloom for all their efforts in creating a lasting visual tribute.

Reflections on the Great War

Listeners were entertained with readings from the memoir and other texts by Mavis Cave, Hilda Gledhill, John Hoyle and Peter Rafferty. The talk gave an insight into what life was like for those on the home front in Coleshill during the war years, highlighting not only the anxieties and fears of those left behind, but also the extent to which life carried on. It also served as a reminder of the pleasure soldiers felt on receiving letters from home and finding out about the happenings of their local community. The evening was more poignant because Jane Holliday, a member of the Townsend family was present. The audience was invited to relate their family’s reminiscences and Pam Moat recounted the sad story of her uncle’s WWI experience. In addition Richard Ilman, dressed in full WWI uniform, and Chris Lewis displayed a range of military equipment including a standard issue .303 rifle and infantry webbing packs. Attendees also enjoyed the exhibition of photographs taken from the society’s collection. Coleshill Civic Society always endeavours to preserve Coleshill’s history and in this centenary year is attempting to identify those in its WWI photographs. Coleshill Remembers invited local schools to participate in this national campaign and received responses from St Edwards and Woodlands schools. The judges were impressed by the quality of all the letters received. Coleshill Remembers chairperson, Kirsteen Wootton, said, ‘Judging the letters proved as difficult as it was enjoyable. The winning entries were chosen because they combined historical facts and literary flair with genuine feeling’. The winning participants were Ellen Stratton, Georgie-Lee Ward and Harry Sherratt from St Edward’s School and Sophie Street, Shannon Reynolds, and Leanne Reading from The Woodlands School, who each received a certificate and a National Book Token, generously funded by the Coleshill Grammar School Foundation. The Coleshill Post - December 2014- Issue 17

I fear for the inquisitive traveller, lured in by the brown tourist signs along the A446: 'Coleshill - Historic Coaching Town'.

Did these very streets once bustle with the constant clamour of hooves and post-horns? Can you still sense the gout-ridden coachman, in all his port-stained splendour? Was a pocket-pistol (and a quick gulp of gin) your only form of reassurance, when the shadow of a highwayman stepped out into the moonlight? The Georgian architecture remains, and the hollowed-out shells of a few inns, but it might as well be fiction. We show no appreciation, acknowledgement, or even awareness of the romantic Coaching Era, which Anthony Burgess so perfectly described as belonging to 'that lusty, terrible, beefy, beery old England'. Unfortunately, books regarding the history of Coleshill tend to focus on the comparatively dreary late-Victorian/Edwardian era - a common characteristic of local-interest publications, as it allows for photographic illustration. This isn't fair; the British Museum has an extensive collection of contemporary prints to represent the Georgian period - beautiful hand-coloured engravings by renowned artists, such as James Pollard, Charles Cooper Henderson, and Henry Alken (to name but a few). My brother and I have an online antiques business (Spencer Bros Art), which regularly stocks 18th/19th century coaching prints, so there's really no excuse for limiting our history to the existence of the camera.

One of the more insightful publications that I have encountered is A History of the County of Warwick, by L. F. Salzman (editor). This was published in 1947, and claims that one local resident 'remembers twenty-two inns [on the high street], most of which are no longer licensed'. At the height of the Coaching Age, there must have been even more. Just imagine the transient throng; the ATMOSPHERE in these establishments (so unlike the pubs we are left with today). Coaching Days of England, by Paul Elek [1966], contains a vivid description of a typical coaching inn: 'Surrounded by panels of old oak, under a smoky ceiling, you have eaten your early breakfast. It was served by a sniffing waiter smelling strongly of brandy (either a coldcure or a dawn-livener) and it consisted of three fried eggs, nearly a pound of local-cured ham, very hot toast soaked in butter, and almost a quart of coffee, well-laced with rum. It is a cold but bright morning, and you stroll out into the inn-yard to taste the air. Ostlers and stable-boys, whistling away, are polishing the spokes and rims of the four wheels of The Telegraph and giving a last rub to the harness. The coachman has inspected the horses and is now downing a viaticum of London gin and hot water.' In 1776, James Boswell and Dr Samuel Johnson travelled from London to Lichfield (Johnson's birthplace). This journey, or rather the coaching inns along the way, inspired Johnson to write: ‘at a tavern, there is a general freedom from anxiety. You are sure you are welcome: and the more noise you make,

the more trouble you give, the more good things you call for, the welcomer you are... there is nothing which has yet been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern or inn.’ Contemporary accounts of the Coaching Era cannot fail to arouse some curiosity in our cultural heritage. Just take this evocative description of a typical coachman, by Washington Irving (1820): ‘He has commonly a broad, full face, curiously mottled with red, as if the blood had been forced by hard feeding into every vessel of the skin; he is swelled into jolly dimensions by frequent potations of malt liquors and his bulk is still further increased by a multiplicity of coats, in which

he is buried like a cauliflower’. Of course, it's easy to romanticise the era; the reality of travelling by coach would be insufferable: If you could afford the ticket, you would squeeze into a claustrophobic carriage, consumed by the festering odour of sweat and sick. A cheaper alternative would be the roof, with the very real possibility of 'dropping off'. Either way, the road would almost certainly be uneven, bumpy, or a quagmire. All of this, coupled with the fact that your journey could take several days, makes for a depressing prospect. Nonetheless, punctuality is paramount, and the adherence to a strict timetable puts National Rail to shame. My enthusiasm isn't dampened by grisly facts about un-cushioned seats and mail-robbers; Coleshill would have been far more interesting back then. Even the food was more exciting: we recently sold an antique cookery book (c.1780), which included recipes for ‘Stewed Tench’, ‘Sparrow Pudding’, ‘Mock-Turtle’ and ‘Pitchcocked Eels’. Unfortunately, we live in a sterile, Orwellian era, in which our enjoyment is stifled, or even rationed, through arbitrary limitations: 'Recommended Daily Allowance', 'Five-A-Day', 'Calorie Counters', 'Units of Alcohol'. Life is to be enjoyed, not endured; our Georgian ancestors knew that, with their Bawdy-Houses and gin. These days, Coleshill is more famous for being the ‘Viagra capital of England’. In fairness, I don't think the people of Coleshill have intentionally disregarded the Coaching Era; I just don't think there's enough information available about the history of our town. How many of you knew, for example, that Brylcreem was first created here? If it wasn't for that pioneering Coleshillian, Rock 'n' Roll could have been very different (just imagine Elvis Presley with clean, fluffy hair). Local historians: I demand that you enlighten us. Share your knowledge and expertise, and help bring the Coaching Era to life. Justify those tourist signs on the A446.

The Coleshill Post

By Jim Bob Spencer

Coleshill is universally known as an historic coaching town. Evidence remains of it’s former glory in some of it’s surviving architecture. So why do we show such little appreciation for our rich cultural heritage? Jim Bob Spencer explores the possible reasons.

BRAND NEW SERIES: The Coleshill and District Civic Society HERITAGE

On Thursday December 4th hundreds of Coleshill people visited the Old Market Hall on Church Hill to attend the Love Coleshill Christmas Market.

But how many were aware that this building, as well as hosting The Visitor Centre, is also the headquarters of Coleshill and District Civic Society. Established in 1963, The Civic Society has been responsible for saving many historical bulidings from demolition and can be credited with helping to preserve the heritage of our aincient town. Having witnessed first hand the hardwork and dedication that goes in to running this important society, it seems only fitting that we pay tribute to it’s members, past and present and let everybody know the amazing achievements that most of Coleshill’s yonger generation now take for granted. Over the next few months we will be telling the amazing story of one of Coleshill’s most modest groups, starting at the very beginning over 50 years ago.

Appeal to the Ministry of Housing WITHIN months of the Civic Societies formation the awful realisation dawned that not only Old Bank House was under threat of demolition, but the whole of Church Hill and also that part of High St which ran from Church Hill to St Peter’s Walk was threatened. It was decided to write to the Minister of Housing.

Coleshill Civic Society, Greenways, Coleshill. 25th February ,l964 Dear Sir Keith Joseph, In view of the keen interest you have taken in the preservation of ancient town centres and the retention and restoration of property of historical interest as groups, we venture to put before you the case of Coleshill in North Warwickshire. This is an old market town, at one time possessing as many as twenty two inns, mostly used as coaching inns, between Lichfield and Coventry. The town consists principally of one long street running from the bridge over the Cole in the north up a steep hill to the town centre surmounted by the 14th Century Church with a tall steeple visible for many miles around. At the top of the main hill, known as Church Hill, a broad short street to the East leads to the Church. Here formerly stood a market hall with open arcading with stocks and whipping post in front. The latter only remain and are placed in front of No 3 North Side. The town has many pleasing examples of 16th and 17th Century domestic architecture but the main appearance of the town is Georgian. None of the buildings is outstanding but the grouping of them is attractive particularly on Church Hill. Unfortunately, the town has fallen during the last three

The formation meeting of Coleshill & District Civic Society at Meridan Rural District Council headquarters in Chantry House.

PART ONE

• Atmosphere of Coleshill Threatened • Appeal to Coleshill Lovers to rally round

COLESHILL and District Civic Society came into existence back in 1963 amidst a wild world of demolition and devastation which was sweeping the town.

The demolition process began at the bottom of the High Street and had slowly worked it’s way up until it reached Church Hill. The 5th of April 1963 proved to be a turning point. On this date the Meriden Rural District Council (M.R.D.C.), whose headquarters were in the Old Vicarage, now Chantry House, opposite the Town Hall, announced its intention to knock

years into the hands of one or two speculative builders and many of the early buildings have been lost and housing estates of a peculiarly distasteful type built in their place. This excludes estates built by the Meriden Rural District Council which are good. The next site to be threatened is Church Hill itself which is scheduled for demolition and re-development by the County Planning Authority. The Coleshill Civic Society appeals most earnestly to the Minister to preserve this, almost the last group of buildings remaining entire, forming a charming vista with the old Grammar School and Parish Church at its head. No 3 Church Hill North Side. Institute with Pillory Whipping Post and Stocks - a plain Georgian building owned by Simon Wingfield Digby, Esq., and let to the R.A.F. Association. No 5 The ‘Old House’ a Private residence early 18th Century. No 7 A doub1e – fronted Georgian House enlarged on one side recently. Now let as Offices. No 9 Old Bank House - Early 18th Century Georgian House. In the possession of and until two years ago used by the Meriden Rural District. Now empty and threatened with demolition. No 20 South Side. Red brick ivy covered house double fronted Georgian. This house was bought on the death of the owner three years ago by a speculative builder for conversion into flats with separate block (3 storey) to be built in the garden. This required vehicular access from the Churchyard and from St. Peter’s Walk. Planning permission was refused. The remaining property consists of small Georgian Houses all in private occupation. The Georgian House, the old Grammar School, at the east right angle bend in Church Hill founded in 1612 and rebuilt in the 18th Century has been used as an educational establishment until last year. The Trustees are preserving this and converting it into flats. Included in this planned redevelopment of Church Hill are Houses on the East side of High Street which form a right angle with the South Side. They include 107 and 109 High Street which were once the Three Tuns Inn. These two properties are in occupation and are late 16th Century (divided in the shape of a half H shaped plan jettied in the west front.) Like the walls of the wide covered gateway, they are of timber framing.

down Old Bank House, a Georgian building opposite the Parish Church. Three days later, on the 8th of April, ‘a deputation of townsfolk, led by the Vicar, Canon Frank Morgan, surged into the Parish Room to protest to the Parish Council.’ The minutes do not record what happened next but one can imagine the consternation produced. A letter was printed on the 19th of April in the Coleshill Chronicle from Canon Morgan. He wrote that he was ‘appalled and disgusted’, and appealed to all lovers of Coleshill to rally round.

No 111 is a single bay plastered house of well preserved timber framing. These buildings (with the exception of the Grammar School) are scheduled for redevelopment and compulsory purchase of these properties has already begun. At the moment the immediate plan is to demolish the South side of Church Hill and the Old Bank house on the North side with the adjacent property in the High Street. When these buildings were condemned, we understand that the decision was taken on a casting vote. The Meriden Rural District Council proposes to erect three storey flats on the South side of Church Hill and also in place of Old Bank House. This Society begs the Minister to consider this as a town centre worth saving and to list this as an attractive vista for preservation in Group II. The Meriden District Council has already - in conjunction with a very able Architect shown its ability to save and restore by adapting the Old Vicarage as a Council House and Chamber. The society wishes respectfully to suggest that:(1) Old Bank House should be preserved and adapted as

A leading article was headed “Atmosphere of Coleshill Threatened”. At a Town Meeting on 22nd of April, it was decided to form a Civic Society. The MRDC obviously decided to accept the concept of a civic society but made no decisions as far as Old Bank House was concerned, for on the 9th of October 1963, the inaugural meeting of the Society took place in their Council Chamber, with the Chairman of the MRDC present. Canon Morgan was elected Chairman, Dr Doris Wall secretary, and Miss Joan Tuckley, JP treasurer and a committee of Mr Bowater, Mrs Breedon, Mr B Gascoigne, Mr Mann and Mr Norman. On Oct 31st 1963 Mr Stokes and Dr Stuart were co-opted. Fifty people were present. And so the Coleshill Civic Society was born, 51 years ago.

in the case of the Grammar School (2) That all the frontages of the buildings on the South Side be preserved and restored and continue to be used for private occupation. (3) That the Houses in the High Street be restored where necessary and continue in use as business premises as at present. This plan is supported by:- Denys Hinton, A. A. Dip. (Hons), F.R.I.B.A., Acting Principal of Birmingham School of Architecture F.W.B. Charles, B. Arch., F.R.I.B.A., Levi Fox, B. Arch., F. R. Hist.S., of the Dugdale Society, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust. Hugh Sumner, Esq., C.B.E., whose father, Sir John Sumner built and endowed some delightful almshouses in Coleshill. Yours sincerely, Doris Wall. (Secretary) The battle lines were drawn; the struggle was to continue for the next nine years.

Stamp duty overhauled In his Autumn Statement The Chancellor George Osborne announced a revision to how Stamp Duty Land Tax is charged BY PHIL SALINAS This is a tax charged to the purchaser of land and property and has been a cause for complaint for a long time as the thresholds have not altered as house prices have increased and so more properties have become chargeable. This especially effects first time buyers often with limited resources and more so in London where house prices are higher. Under the current system tax is charged on the whole purchase amount depending where the value rests within the different thresholds which I have detailed below. This means that if your purchase price sits just above a change in threshold then you will pay substantially more in tax than if you were just under as it is charged on the whole rather than the part that rests in the higher threshold. Under the new system which comes in to effect at midnight on 3rd December 2014 the tax will be charged against the value of the purchase for each part that falls in to a relevant threshold. Upto £125,000 it is a nil rate, next band upto £250,000 is charged at 2%, upto £925000 at 5%, upto £1.5m 10% and above at 12%. Therefore if you buy a

property for £300,000 then you will pay tax on £125000 at 2% and £50000 at 5% giving a tax bill of £5000 compared to 3% on the whole £300,000 currently which would be £9000. This would mean a saving of £4000 which is quite a sizeable sum of money. For anyone who has recently completed a purchase it will be frustrating in the scenarios where you could have been better off under the new system but equally a relief for those who would benefit by way of lower stamp duty under the old system at some of the higher values. The changes come in to effect from midnight tonight with special arrangements in place for those between exchange and completion to be able to use which ever option provides for a lower tax calculation. The new rates will only apply to the amount of the purchase that falls in to each band as opposed to the entire purchase meaning that if you buy at just above a threshold you will only pay the higher tax rate on the bit above as opposed to the whole amount. This is a much fairer system and removes glass ceilings on values for some types of homes which hover just under the current stamp duty thresholds. For first time buyers, especially those out-

New rates are:

Upto £125000 nil Between £125000 and £250000 2% £250000 to £925000 5% £925000 to £1.5m 10% over £1.5m 12% ________________________________

Old Rates which applied to whole of the purchase: £0 to £125000 £125001 to £250000 £250001 to £500000 £500001 to £1m £1,000,001 to £2m £2,000,001 and over

nil 1% 3% 4% 5% 7%

side of London and the South East it is likely to have the biggest benefit as where you are buying a property just over the lower threshold it will incur a small amount of Stamp Duty. An example would be a purchase at £150,000 under the old system would be £1500 but now would be £500 which is 2% of the £25000 excess. £1000 to a first time buyer is a lot of money and can make the difference between funding a 10% deposit or not and consequently how good an interest rate you can get on your first mortgage. Santa pays flying visit to Coleshill kids

The Coleshill Post

KIDS Need Both Parents is a small charity based on Station Road in Coleshill offering emotional support to parents and children going through separation. On Saturday 13th December we held a Christmas Fayre at the Coleshill Community Centre. It was a busy day filled with fun and excitement. The children had an opportunity to visit Santa in our amazing grotto, as well as being entertained by our children's act who delivered a fabulous selection of games and completions, even the parents got involved!!! We were also very lucky to have a visit from Elsa

of Frozen, the children’s faces lit brighter than the lights on our Christmas tree, it certainly went down a treat. As the day drew to an end both Elsa and Santa helped draw the raffle handing out some amazing prizes and picked a name for our KNBP bear. I would like to thank those who attended on Saturday, I hope everyone had a great time. A big thank you Janette and Rob for all their hard work and support on the day. All the proceeds raised will go to KNBP, this will go towards helping many more families across Birmingham who have gone or are going through separation.

Gardening

From bitter experience I know that these good intentions rarely make it past the end of January but here are some New Year gardening resolution we can possibly keep in 2015. Make our Gardens more 'wildlife friendly'. This doesn't just mean putting up another bird-feeder although there's nothing wrong with that (if we remember to keep it clean and stocked throughout the year and not just in winter) but also to create habitats for insects such as bees, ladybirds and other creatures as toads. Just leaving a small pile of logs or sticks in a corner is a start. Include a water feature. Now we can't all have fountains or the formal water courses of the alhambra but a small pond, either a natural one or with a small pump and running water adds another dimension to a garden. It also provides a drinking station for all sorts of wildlife. From the simple birdbath to larger tubs and other containers there's tremendous

LCH

scope for the addition to any garden. The sound of running water, especially on a hot summers day, is music to the ear. Try More adventurous planting! Go on- Plant something completely new in your garden! Look through the seed catalogues or the garden centre displays (once they've moved on from Christmas!) and say. 'That look different! I'll check if I've got the right soil and growing conditions and give it a go!' Tackle that dull or problem area! We've all got one, haven't we? It's that area by the shed or under that tree or in that corner. It never looks quite right and we keep meaning to do something about it but never really devote the thinking times to come up with a satisfactory solution. Let's promise ourselves that 2015 will be the year that problem area is transformed into a positive feature of our garden. Grow some container food! Even if we're fortunate enough to have a greenhouse and/or a dedicated vegetable or soft fruit plot, we can always add something else, especially if it's a bit exotic growing in a window box or patio container. Quinces or filberts anyone?

Christmas came early to Coleshill

Love Coleshill

at the Christmas market and Late Night Opening organised by Love Coleshill Many hundreds of people including lots of young families enjoyed a fantastic array of exciting and unusual events including the ice rink, Santa and the reindeer as well as face painting and a mini beast road show! The Christmas Market in the Old Market Hall offered lots of local products and gifts

and on the late night opening the town was buzzing with the influx of people to see Santa, the reindeer and of course go ice skating! The fabulous Red Coffee Company sold warming drinks to those who came out into the cold to go skating and visit the high street shops. Many shops decorated their windows in the panto theme and shopkeepers dressed

up to the delight of the shoppers. The Open top bus was once again on the high street with members of the Coleshill Town Band playing a selection of favourite Christmas Carols and songs and traders gave away tasty treats and drinks such as mulled wine, mince pies and chocolates to the late night shoppers.

This is the fourth year running that Love Coleshill has organised events but it is definitely the best one thanks to the ingenuity of the team including Penny Johnson and Clare Macleod who were supported by Mark Clark and the team from Commbus and lots of other volunteers including members of the Love Coleshill Consortium.

Who needs new? 05-08-37-47-48 / 02-03, if these were your lottery numbers, your best off to roll this paper up and whack anyone who comes near you while on your way to the Yacht and Skimpy Bikini Clad Ladies shop. The rest of us are going to have to carry on our lives as normal, for another week at least anyway. Next week will be our numbers but until then, unfortunately the mansion, yacht's, bikini clad ladies and Monaco will have to be put on the back burner. The one ray of light is, millionaire or not you can have yourself a slice of their life sitting on your driveway making you the envy of all your neighbours. A new Mercedes E 500 may be a stretch at £60,000, but for that you get leather seats, air con, cruise control and all of the other luxury’s Mercedes can cram into one of their most luxury vehicles on sale today. The thing is, there’s another car very similar in size, performance and spec that you can pick up for as little as £5,000.

It’s called the Mercedes E 500. Fair enough it might be 12 years older but you would be surprised how little has changed in the way of extras, which does raise an eyebrow as to why these cars are so horrifically cheap. Well for one, it is more expensive to fix and run than a small hatchback therefore putting people off, but at 5k who cares. Where are you going to find a car with as much kit and frankly as much car as this? So now you have the family saloon to drive about in, you might want a sports car sitting next to it. Well for a smidge under £60,000 you could pick yourself up a Porsche Boxter, or if you don’t mind a drop of BHP but having a much nicer looking car, the £8,000 Lotus Elise s2 does appear to be quite a bargain. Your 13 grand down, but now own a Merc that is almost indistinguishable from the same model 9 years younger and a fairly sprightly 2 seater softtop sports car. Now I hear a lot of arguments when I suggest this, warranty for one and a new car is obviously more reliable. Well the second is total-

ly by chance as new cars can be plagued with all sorts of problems but the warranty is something that the second hand market just can’t compete with, but as you have £20,000 leftover from not buying a new all-round equivalent like the VW

Christmas is an exciting time of the year. Batteries Family and friends unite to give gifts, catch All batteries are potentially toxic, if chewed or pierced up and enjoy the celebrations. they may cause chemical burns and metal poisoning.

Food

Some of our food can be highly toxic to our pets, even the tiniest amounts can be fatal. Chocolate (Remember not to leave edible presents under the Christmas tree). Onions, Nuts Fruit Cakes, Puddings, Mince Pies, Raisins and grapes, Cooked bones (may splinter or cause a blockage).

Speak to a vet if you suspect your dog has chewed or swallowed a battery.

Antifreeze

Take care using, storing and disposing of antifreeze. It as a smell and taste that our pets are attracted to and is extremely toxic and fatal if ingested.

Trees and Plants

Pine needles should be swept daily to prevent them getting stuck in your pets paws. If chewed or eaten they may cause an upset tummy. Mistletoe, Ivy poinsettia and other festive plants can be toxic and should be kept out of reach. It goes without saying, if your worried then speak to a vet. Have the telephone number handy just in case. Enjoy the festive celebrations. Wishing you and your four legged friends a very merry Christmas.

We are a small licensed day care centre set in a beautiful countryside location and pride ourselves in offering a friendly, caring environment for your dog. The centre is run by a handful of staff which means the dogs get to know us all really well. All dog friendly canines of every shape and size are welcome with open arms. Our aim is to provide a home from home for your dog. If you need to go to work or your are off out for the day or just want your dog to have fun and socialise in a safe environment, our day care centre can provide your dog with hours of care and love. We also have a wide variety of toys and play/agility equipment that keep them entertained for hours. The Licensed kennels on site can board dogs over night if needed and customers have the added bonus of combining both services. During the day the dogs get full access to our indoor and outdoor areas. They choose whether to lounge on the sofas and beds inside or run and play outside. Through the summer months they have air conditioning inside, paddling pools outside and lots of natural shade. In the winter the heating is on but most choose to run around with their friends outside. Some days they get a little muddy but we always do our best to send them home clean. It is lovely to see the excited faces heading down the path towards us every day. For Further Information please visit www.daycarefordogs.org or find us on Facebook. Merry Woofmas! For many of us our canines are very much part of the festivities with over 65% of us buying our dogs a Christmas present and over 65% getting their own Christmas dinner. It can be a strange time for our dogs as their usual home environment is often decorated with trees and lights. We are busy trying to get things ready and our normal routine may be disrupted. Here is a reminder of some common Christmas dangers:

The Coleshill Post - December 2014- Issue 17

Dear Editor

The Coleshill Post

I’m pleased to hear that HS2 have announced that the rail depot earmarked for Washwood Heath will stay in Washwood Heath. The MP for Washwood Heath, Liam Byrne, understandably wanted the yard moved elsewhere with one possibility being on land owned by Birmingham City Council on the outskirts of Chelmsley Wood. The people of Washwood Heath were united in wanting the yard moved from their patch just as we were united in not wanting it near our town. One or two local politicians have tried to make political capital out of the issue by suggesting there was some sort of secret plan within Coleshill Labour Party to put the marshalling yard in Coleshill. You may have received a leaflet from Peter Fowler’s team suggesting I was in cahoots with Liam Byrne and his colleagues (even printed on red paper!) on the eve of the County Council election in 2013. It was nonsense, just as it would be nonsense to suggest that because a Conservative MP from elsewhere in the country thinks something then Coleshill Conservatives must think the exact same. None of it was helpful or constructive but a demonstration of a politician being deliberately misleading for his own personal gain. I’m glad that the issue has finally been resolved. I also hope that we don’t see a similar dirty tricks campaign in the upcoming elections in May. The people of Coleshill deserve better. Sincerely Harry Taylor

Your views count so usethenews and be heard!!

Comment of the Month..... I read with concern the report on the allged attack of a local woman in Coleshill and the call for our street lighting to be turned back on. I also noted that a number of garages in Wilmott Drive had been broken in to. My Council owned garage in Digby Road has been broken into twice in the last few months. I have contacted the police and was told that they would like the reinstatement of Coleshill street lighting as soon as possible as they belive that this is a contributory factor to the amount of crime that is currently happening in the Coleshill area. I emailed Cllr Peter Fowler on the subject of our street lighting

but have not yet received a reply. I was contacted by a Mr Juggins from the County Council who told me that it is not possble to reinstate any street lighting even on a tempory basis. He added that his department have been asked to find further cuts in street lighting. I would like to know who makes the decision on which lights are turned off and on what that decision is based. We know this is a political decision and not made in the best interests of the residents in Coleshill. Perhaps Cllr Fowler could respond through this newspaper and give his reasons for not supporting the call for our street lighting to be restored.

The Coleshill Post - December 2014- Issue 17

Businesses from around North Warwickshire flocked to Grimscote Manor in Coleshill on Tuesday 2nd December to hear how to grow their business.

Over 60 people attended the event to hear from a range of different experts about the funding, finance and business support available to them and to network with other businesses operating in the area. Steve Maxey the Assistant Chief Executive from North Warwickshire Borough Council set the scene for the evening with a brief summary of the local economy and the key opportunities for the future. This was followed by presentations from Rachael Delich from the Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub, Elaine Weston from Warwickshire County Council together with Warwickshire Rural Growth Network partners, Nicolas Garnier from Pera Consulting Ltd., and Tim Powell from the University Of Warwick Science Park who together explained the support and

funding opportunities that are available. It was acknowledged that the setting up or expanding of a business can be a confusing process and that these organisations are designed to help and guide people through it. One person who has already been through the process is Mark Dodsworth from Greenwood and Dodsworth. He concluded the formal proceedings of the evening with a brief presentation about ‘his journey’ and the financial support and advice that had greatly benefitted his business. Attendees went away from the event inspired and armed with a range of information and contacts to help them in the future. Any business operating in North Warwickshire who missed the event but would like to know more are encouraged to contact Emma McKay, LEADER Development Officer at North Warwickshire Borough Council on 01827 719356 emmamckay@ northwarks.gov.uk.

Business46 Celebrates a Fantastic Year!

@ColeshillPost

BUSINESS46

49

The Coleshill Post

Business46 celebrated its first anniversary at the Coleshill Hotel on Wednesday 12th November.

The breakfast event was a huge success with over 45 local business professionals in attendance. Organisers Anna Plotnek of AP Designs, Penny Sheward of MCD Recruitment and Jemma James of TruTac were overwhelmed with the support and positive feedback. A year ago launching an independent networking group for the area seemed like a daunting prospect; however the commitment, enthusiasm and hard work has paid off. Not only have local businesses gained a trusted networking group but local sports clubs and schools have benefited too. Penny says “The aim of the group was to create profitable partnerships, share solutions, and build new opportunities. We've achieved all three. On top of this we've established relationships in the community and raised money for local charities. We guarantee a warm welcome in a relaxed and informal format, and it works.” Anna said “There are so many businesses that have benefited from attending our events and it’s amazing that we've achieved so much in only 12 months. The group understands the challenges facing businesses on a local level and everyone has gained business from it.” Over the last 12 months attendees

have benefited from B2B networking and speakers on a variety of informative topics including apprentices, public speaking, online training, effective marketing and social media amongst others. The anniversary event had Anthony Levelle as guest speaker, who explained his own varied networking experiences and his background in setting up a number of highly successful events across the Midlands. Anthony also has a search and recruitment business that specialises in sales and recruitment, with much of his business being gained through networking. Jemma says “We’re very proud of the group’s achievements over the last 12 months and we’re already planning events for 2015. We've successfully built a great environment to meet like-minded professionals and cultivate business on your doorstep. The group benefits not only organisations but also the area as a whole, protecting jobs and fuelling growth.” The next event breakfast event is Wednesday 14th January, 7.30am at The Coleshill Hotel, Coleshill High Street. Price is £15 and includes breakfast roll and refreshments. The topic will be workplace pensions. The team are also holding a celebratory Christmas event on Friday 5th December at The Coleshill Hotel. Spaces for both events are limited, to reserve your place or for more information please email info@business46.co.uk.

Growing a business for the next generation Services grow for local I.T. company BUSINESS

The Coleshill Post

What is RGN?

THE Warwickshire Rural Growth Network provides free business support to businesses and individuals looking to start their own business, in rural Warwickshire.

Warwickshire County Council has been selected by DEFRA, as one of five counties in England to run this new pilot business support programme focusing on rural areas. You will be given a dedicated business coach, who will work with you to develop a bespoke action plan, to launch a new business or kick start business growth. You and your business coach will work through your journey, to achieve your goals. To discuss this opportunity further, please do contact us on either 07768 390148 or 07920 563781.

DATA Productions Ltd met with Rita Booth, a business coach at Pera Consulting (UK) Ltd (partner delivering the business coaching element of Warwickshire Rural Growth Network), on 6th December 2013, following a referral from another client. At this point, Jerry Holcroft (Director) had established a micro business as a Limited Company. Data Productions Ltd is a newly established micro business that provides an outsourced I.T. Management service to local businesses. The business provides all aspects of I.T. support, ranging from I.T. management (hardware and software), to data management, software and website development, as well as user support. In the early days of this business, Jerry had a clear vision to develop this enterprise into a family business, providing a sustainable future to family members. Jerry and Rita met to discuss the business services, potential ways in which to grow new markets and secure suitable contracts to introduce family

members into Data Productions Ltd. Following this initial diagnostic meeting, Rita and Jerry have developed an action plan to establish growth and plan for the required resources. In addition, Data Productions Ltd has engaged with the full programme of business workshops available to those committed with Warwickshire Rural Growth Network. The Vision and Strategy workshop was particularly beneficial to Jerry “the workshop made me recognise the importance of taking time to put ideas into practice, to take one or two days per month to begin developing off the shelf systems.” Data Productions Ltd continues to receive oneto-one business coaching, as well as accessing business workshops. Both services are providing Jerry Holcroft with an opportunity to establish a sustainable business model and develop management strategies to sustain the growth this business. With the professional support and guidance from Rita Booth, business coach, Data Productions Ltd

has successfully began to stimulate growth by securing new contracts, as well as now exploring new markets to continue with the growth plan. Additionally, Jerry has recruited both of his sons into the business, achieving his goal of developing a sustainable family business. Now, Rita and Jerry are focused on developing business knowledge across the team at Data Productions Ltd. If you would like to learn more about how Warwickshire Rural Growth Network may help you start a new business or develop your existing business, please call 07768 390148 or visit www.warwickshiregov.uk/ruralgrowthnetwork . “It’s a pleasure working with Rita, who with her wealth of experience is able to focus you on the challenges running a small business brings. This has enabled us to grow and produce a plan for our future. Find out more about us at www.dataproductions.co.uk.” Jerry Holcroft, Director of Data Productions Ltd

EVs (cars and vans) provide an excellent opportunity to save transport fuel costs whilst driving with no exhaust emissions. The comfort and driving performance of the latest electric vehicles is proving attractive too! Electric vans are also now entering the market with much improved mileage range and Greenwatt is pleased to announce additional funding to enable a further 5 businesses to benefit from the scheme and lease an electric van. Warwickshire Rural Electric Vehicle project (WREV) – providing grant funding as an incentive for companies to trial an EV for 2 years. More than 20 businesses with rural postcodes have already been provided with a free feasibility study to determine the practicalities and financial case for the deployment of EVs. From these ‘business assists’, 10 Warwickshire businesses have been awarded a grant as contribution towards 2-year con-

tract hire costs of an EV, offered eco-driving training to maximise driver performance and provided with charge points installed on their business premises. This offer is now extended to electric vans. Interest in the project has come from a wide range of businesses across the County with activities including farming, tourism, local deliveries, business services, electrical services and car maintenance. Reviews carried out show that EVs can provide significant savings on business transport costs (fuel, road tax, maintenance) - as well as bringing environmental benefits through zero exhaust emissions. This is a Defra-funded Rural Growth Network project which Warwickshire County Council leads for the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership. The project is managed by Greenwatt Technology – low carbon transport consultants based in Alcester, South Warwickshire. For further information and details of the WREV Project, please contact Greenwatt Technology on transport@greenwatt.co.uk or by telephone 01789 761367.

The Coleshill Post - December 2014- Issue 17

PEOPLE in the West Midlands have a dramatically higher level of trust in businesses in their area than they do in UK business as a whole.

The CBI’s Great Business Debate (its campaign to increase public trust in business) is today (Monday) publishing a YouGov survey of over four thousand people, including 351 in the West Midlands. It shows that, when people’s feelings about businesses are determined by their direct experience, they are overwhelmingly positive but that this often fails to translate into support for business generally. In the West Midlands 76% of people trust ‘local businesses’ (firms in their vicinity, big or small, that they interact with) compared with 54% who trust business overall. That matches a pattern for the whole UK where the figures were 81% and 57%. The CBI is encouraging individuals to recognise that contradiction and calling on businesses to go further in strengthening their engagement with the areas where they operate. It is also calling on businesses to tell the bigger story of their contribution to communities, jobs and investment more convincingly. Richard Butler, CBI West Midlands Director, said: “Businesses here have a job to do using the warmth felt for them at a local level to improve feelings about UK business as a whole. “When people have direct experience of companies, for example as customers or employees, it’s overwhelmingly good and trust is high as a result. But opinions about business generally seem to have less solid roots. These views are more likely to be influenced by things people read or hear second hand

and are a lot less positive. “As part of the CBI’s trust-in-business campaign, The Great Business Debate, we’re challenging individuals to think about the contradiction in how they perceive businesses locally and business generally. We’re also calling on firms in the West Midlands to build on the positive engagement they already have in the areas where they operate and to tell more convincingly the story of their impact on jobs, investment and taxes which is felt in communities all over the country.” In the West Midlands nearly two thirds of people (63%) agree they are more likely to trust a business with a strong presence in their area while only 6% feel local businesses don’t have a positive impact on their locality. Other key findings for the region include: 49% agree local businesses often support other businesses in the area by sourcing locally - only 10% disagree 45% agree businesses in my area are proud to be part of the community – only 7% disagree Creating and supporting local jobs is the main thing people in the region say ‘local businesses’ (firms in their vicinity, big or small, that they interact with) should be doing more of to build trust (71%) followed by providing good customer service (60%) The trust-building action they want more of from ‘national businesses’ (firms big and small operating across the UK) is similar, jobs 63% and service 61%. The CBI’s Great Business Debate wants to hear the widest possible range of views. Anyone can go to the website greatbusinessdebate.co.uk to leave comments or follow on twitter @bizdebate

A Midlands IT company has become the first in Europe to have its recruitment software officially certified for Microsoft Dynamics.

Coleshill-based Crimson Limited, the company that develops rapid recruitment software Mercury xRM, and one of only two providers from the UK that sits on the Microsoft Partner Advisory Council, has announced the accolade. As the only recruitment software to receive such an endorsement in Europe, this is an enormous boost for the company and means recruiters will benefit from using a cutting edge cloud-first solution with seamless integration with Microsoft Dynamics CRM and other Microsoft products such as Office 365, Yammer and Lync. It also recognises Mercury xRM’s integration with CRM Online and enables recruiters using the software to access the very latest CRM 2015 functionality. Chris Kendrick, Sales Director and product visionary for Mercury xRM, commented: “We’ve worked with Microsoft for over a year to ensure that Mercury xRM fully integrates with Microsoft Dynamics CRM so our customers have a solution that makes their jobs easier. It is so often the case that technology and software baffles people and that the full potential of any system is not utilised due to integration and training difficulties. “With Mercury xRM, recruiters are faced

with a familiar interface, it integrates seamlessly, doesn’t require long training sessions and really is a quick, effective and easy rapid recruitment software solution and, we’re not the only ones that believe that - Microsoft itself now formally recognises that. We are absolutely delighted with the certification for Mercury xRM and, as we sit on the Microsoft Advisory Council, our voice and those voices of our recruiter network, will ensure we continually develop and improve our solutions to help shape the future of recruitment technology, in line with the backing and guidance of Microsoft themselves.” Crimson is already a Microsoft Gold Partner and works closely with Microsoft to develop Mercury xRM on an ongoing basis, with multiple updates a year, which are passed to users via the cloud. Recent updates to the software have included a Client and Candidate portal, which enables recruiters to self-serve compliance information and supporting documents, and the company is continuing to work with Microsoft to help boost productivity in the workplace for the recruitment industry. “This milestone demonstrates Crimson’s commitment to delivering leading solutions and expertise for our customers,” said Rich Wickham, general manager, Microsoft Dynamics Partners. “We congratulate Crimson for meeting Microsoft’s highest standards of software quality and earning the CfMD distinction.”

Wholesale change needed in way we promote engineering to teenagers Research shows need for different approaches to inspire five distinct student groups about engineering We need a wholesale change to the way we promote engineering in schools to reach out to different student groups, says a new report by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The report ‘Five Tribes: Personalising Engineering Education’ is calling on Government, teachers, industry and Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) organisations to take into account young people’s diverse values and attitudes to try and inspire them about engineering. Peter Finegold, Head of Education and Skills at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said: “Whatever we have been doing isn’t working. The UK is struggling with a dramatic shortfall of engineers. In 2010 it was calculated that demand to maintain economic growth meant producing 190,000 engineering graduates and technicians every year till 2020. Last year we produced only 51,000, of our 87,000 target for graduates alone, and time is ticking by. “Engineering is a hugely creative subject yet our education system too often segregates those it sees as potential engineers from those it deems artists. Yet it is clear that if we are to meet this shortfall, we need to think differently about who our audience is. “This new report identifies five distinct student types, based on their values, interests and attitudes to STEM subjects, and calls on Government, schools and industry to develop different approaches to inspire them about engineering. “If we are serious about meeting the UK’s engineering skills shortage we can no longer rely on appealing just to the small proportion of people who are passionate about STEM sub-

jects. Our research shows that young women for example, tend to have a greater affinity to engineering connected to design, medicine, sports and the environment and this should be reflected in the way STEM subjects are presented to them in school.” The report identifies five clearly defined ‘tribes’ of young people in the UK, aged 11–19: • Stem Devotees: enthusiasts who expressed very high levels of enjoyment of STEM subjects, especially mathematics. This group saw STEM-related careers as prestigious, clever and accessible to them. • Social Artists: young people who tended to enjoy STEM subjects less than other students and who were more likely to be positive about art, English language, drama and dance. Their connection with traditionally ‘creative’ subjects may on the surface make them less likely candidates for a future in STEM, but this group comprises many potential engineers if the engineering community were better able to promote its creative side. • Enthused Unfocussed: teenagers with wide-ranging interests, including an acknowledged enjoyment and interest in STEM subjects, but who lack confidence that a STEM career is for them. • Individualists: adolescents who have less interest in engineering as a career and who are more likely to study academic subjects linked to specific vocations, such as law, psychology and business. But as the most entrepreneurial tribe, they would benefit from greater exposure to the opportunities in engineering. • Less Engaged: pupils who broadly lack confidence in their own abilities and had the lowest affinity of any group with engineering. To read the full report: ‘Five Tribes: Personalising Engineering Education’.

The Coleshill School

News and events

BY ALICE CONNALLY Year 8 Student STEM club is an after school club which runs every Monday with Miss Rollason and Miss King for students at The Coleshill School. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths and the club covers all of these subjects.

Over the past couple of weeks, our task has been to make an amazing geodesic dome. We set about making this by using The Coleshill Post, our hyper local newspaper, some sellotape and a bit of glue! Firstly, we used the newspaper to make thirty-five long rolls and thirty short rolls which were all carefully measured. This took us quite a long time to do! We then began to build the dome shape by sticking 10 long rolls together into a circle. We then attached a long and a short to each joint

BY MISS ROLLASON Teacher of Science and STEM Co-ordinator IT has been a fantastic term for the STEM club sincelaunching at the start of September. We have a regular group of about twenty students from all year groups who attend each week and take part in a range of activities. The hi-light for me this term has been the rocket design where a group of Year 10 boys built a rocket which crashed into my lab ceiling which has left a small stain of their rocket fuel for the rest of the year! The plastercine boat race was another exciting session where a tough competition ensued between the Year 7s and Year 11s to build a plastercine boat which could carry the most marbles before sinking. The Year 11 girls cer-

and arranged them so that there were two longs next to each other, followed by two shorts. After that, we connected the tops of two adjacent shorts together to make a triangle then the next two longs together, and so on all the way around. We were thrilled to see The Coleshill Post dome emerge and it was great to be able to work closely as a team, being reliant upon each other. We were very proud of the end result! Rhea Daley, a Year 8 student, said “I enjoy STEM club because it helps us extend ourknowledge. It is also really fun becausewe do brilliant experiments that wewouldn’t get to do in class”. Another Year 8 student, Olivia Cook said “I love STEM club because I love technology.” I like going to STEM club because I lovescience experiments and I like workingwith other people. A big thank you to all at The Coleshill Postfor their newspaper and support! tainly had the most original design, and the Year 7 boys had the most successful design until drama stuck with a leak happening. Both teams were finally beaten by a team of two students in Year 8 and Year 9! We have a number of sixth form students who have ledsessions this term; Rebecca Goodfellow and Chloe Jeanes led the forensic session on testing solutions for different chemicals in order to solve a poisoning mystery. Matt Allen led the two week session building the geodesic dome project and did a fantastic job of organising the younger years to all build the structure in these pictures. There are more opportunities coming up in the STEM club leading up to Christmas with external visitors coming in to speak to our students about chemistry, we have two Year 12 students, Craig Turner and Paige Briscoe who will lead the session on dissection and afestive activity in our last session of the term so keep watching this space!

A cut above the rest Coleshill’s £4.2m New Leisure Centre has officially opened!

Mr Dewi Jones

Chair of Governors at The Coleshill

The state-of-the-art facility was officially launched by the Mayor of North Warwickshire, Councillor Ray Sweet, who opened the original leisure centre 30 years ago.

The landmark event was also attended by fellow NWBC councillors, Wates Construction, school governors, including Chair, Dewi Jones, Finance Director, Teresa Phipps, Mark Rhatigan, former Headteacher of the Coleshill School, Caroline Saffell, from the Education Funding Agency, Sir Christopher Stone, CEO of the ATLP and Coleshill’s Head of

School, Ian Smith-Childs. Students entertained visitors with impressive gymnastic and basketball displays throughout the day. The New Leisure Centre will provide both students and the community with the chance to enjoy a range of sporting activities. Facilities include basketball and badminton courts, indoor five-a-side, a fully equipped gym and fitness and dance studios. Mr Gray, Subject Leader of PE at Coleshill, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to now study and participate in sport in a state-of-the art facility which will also enhance the curriculum and provision for all.”

Boxing

Tommy McCarthy made it four wins out of four in Dublin’s 3Arena on Saturday evening with yet another foe falling early.

89 High Street, Coleshill B46 3AG. TEL: 01675 466 543

Speaking just minutes after starching Martin Horak inside two rounds, Tommy explained to journalists how he had gone about dispatching the Czech boxer on the Macklin-Heiland undercard. “That’s my style, as soon as I get somebody hurt I get the job done. It took a while to get the distance but when I find the target that’s it over,” he said. “He was shorter than me and he was dipping low and when I jabbed he would come up with the left hook and he caught me with one actually in the first or second so he was awkward enough. Once I figured out the equation it was all good.” McCarthy, one of Irish boxing’s most promising boxers, is happy with the varied range of opposition he has been presented with since turning professional. He acknowledges, however, that a solid test from an Irish or UK cruiserweight is needed to advance his progress. “I’ve had different kinds of opponents. The first guy was a journeyman type with a tight guard and then the next one was 6”9 so that was awkward enough. This

fella here was a shorter southpaw with a bit of power so I’m adjusting to different styles. I’ve boxed every style there is as an amateur so it’s just about adjusting as a pro.” The 24-year-old will now turn his attention to a proposed January 24 show in Belfast’s Ulster Hall with a six-round attraction being lined up. Surprisingly, Tommy’s veteran coach Patsy McAllister revealed that his charge has never before boxed at the Ulster Hall as an amateur. “When he won his Senior titles they were all shifted away so he wants the opportunity,” said Patsy. “There are a lot of people who support me in boxing in Belfast and I’m sure they’ll all come down and watch me again,” agreed McCarthy. “If that show goes ahead then it will be brilliant. I haven’t really got hit that much in my four fights but I’m having brilliant sparring so most of the work is done in the gym. As I say, if you are working hard in the gym then you get an easy night and that’s showing in my fights.” Manager Pat Magee was pleased with his man’s performance and is hoping that Sky TV and Matchroom were both impressed enough to ask Tommy back

for another appearance on their shows. “The Sky people have to be impressed with that. Once he got the guy going he hit him with some clean punches and the referee was on the job stopping him because at that size and weight guys can get hurt,” said Pat. “As Tommy said himself, we are trying to get him a variety of opponents and you can see the difference because that guy tonight was a grade up from what he's fought before. He caught Tommy with a cracking left hook early on which told Tommy to pay attention. Whenever he got to the corner Patsy said that there’s nothing easy in this game and told Tommy to go out and do his business and that’s what we did.” Magee envisages big things for McCarthy and his other prospect, Phil Sutcliffe Jnr. The big-punching light-welterweight is edging closer to fight fitness and Pat expects Phil to be ready for late January. “Obviously I’m going to put the two boys on the show. Phil’s hand is improving and I think he’s going to start using it next week and we will probably get him out on a six-rounder to get him back. 2015 is going to be a big year for the two of them,” Pat added.

Anthony Joshua MBE produced scintillating fireworks to stop Michael Sprott inside 90 seconds at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, live on Sky Sports Box Office. Joshua hurt Sprott with a big right hand and sensing the Reading man was in trouble he poured the pressure on and with nothing coming back, Joshua made it ten wins and ten KOs in the paid ranks. Promoter Eddie Hearn revealed that the Olympic gold medal hero will face Kevin ‘Kingpin’ Johnson on January 31 at The O2, and for Joshua, it was a satisfying end to 2014. “I'm glad to get the year out of the way, it's been a busy one,” said Joshua. “He wanted to carry on and so did I. I love

this city, these fans are amazing. Kevin Johnson is durable and he's got a lot of experience and quite a lot of mouth, so it should be a fun one.” Eddie Hearn: “He's had nine fights but when he backs you onto the ropes he's ruthless. We'll take on Kevin Johnson in January and he will be ready to face anyone in the country next summer.” Carl Froch: “I know Anthony very well, he'll go on to win World titles. Michael is nearing the end of his career, but when's the last time you saw such a specimen in the Heavyweight division as Anthony? He unloads so impressively and tenaciously, it's perfect. Matching him up is a nightmare. Everyone loves him and rightly so, what a fine fighter and person he is, he's the full package.”

Dave Jenkins was only 28 years old when he tragically lost his life to cancer, leaving behind his two children Nathan age 4 and Isabel age 8. Mindeseye Tattoo Design are helping to raise money to go into a trust fund for his two children for when they reach 18.

The magic of the F.A Cup, David vs Goliath, plumbers vs full time pro’s, the oldest cup competition in world football – we all love it, and we all love the excitement that only it can bring. That excitement was sweeping a traditionally rugby league town over in the North West last month – as Warrington Town F.C had triumphantly made it into the First Round of the Holy Grail of English Football for the first time in their history after a battle of numerous prelim

victories. Their prize was a prime T.V slot on the BBC in a home tie Vs Exeter City, to be played out in front of a 2,500 strong sellout crowd that could have been tripled if capacity had allowed. By kick off the atmosphere around this game had become electric within Warrington, and the 11 part timers didn’t disappoint – throwing their cramped up bodies into challenge after challenge with manager Shaun Reid on the side-lines going through every tackle with them, it was an epic cup tie and one which the 10/1 underdog won out 1-0 to scenes of pitch invasions and pure and utter joy. The F.A Cup had once again shown the world of why it is so special. Next on the list for this town was a tough away trip to the North East and Gateshead, again to be televised – this time on B.T Sport, and I was lucky enough to interview Warrington Town manager Shaun Reid (brother of English Football Legend Peter) before the game – Coleshill Post: Shaun, with this being a football news, views and tips column can we kick off by asking your tip for this sea-

CP: You’re a lifelong Evertonian like myself, if you had the pick of any member of the current EFC squad, who would you take? S.R: Has to be Barkley, no doubt, hands down, the boy has everything - he’s tricky, he beats players, it’s pure ability - if he stays clear of injury he will be England’s all round complete player. CP: ‘THAT’ speech from yourself on the BBC’s pre-match 1st round build up has been talked around the town as a big factor in the historic win, and the 2 words buzzing around this unbelievable run are S.R: My family, obviously my brother Peter has played and won trophies at the highest level which is a big inspiration but aside from that, what really inspires me is smiles, the smiles around Warrington at the moment and the smiles on the faces of 2500 fans rushing the pitch after that first

On the plus side there was a two ring gas cooker, running water and electricity (subject to regular power cuts). We very quickly found the local Chai seller and became regular customers. Transport between schools was by bus or tuktuk. Zaf had identified a number of local schools

Most of the children had a little understanding of English but they struggled with our Brummie accents. Playing areas were dirt and dust. Not a blade of grass in site. They were all shapes and sizes with the smallest pitch being only ten by ten metres. The one element of the core values was ‘enjoyment’. ‘When are you coming back’ was always their parting words. round win is something I’ll never forget, smiles inspire me. CP: If we dare to dream for a moment of being in the hat for the 3rd round draw then that of course throws up the possibility of facing a Premier League side - what would be the ultimate draw for you....? ...your team and your brother Peter’s playing days side Everton at Goodison OR arch rivals Liverpool at Anfield, of who I believe Peter supported as a kid ?! That guts me as a blue! Is it true? S.R: Haha, yes it’s true but he soon come to his senses, he’s been a blue ever since he played his first game at Goodison. I’d have to say Liverpool at Anfield, we’d probably win that one!! I’d love to pit my wits there against them. CP: You’re clearly a gifted coach and great man manager - what’s the best advice you would give to any aspiring future players or managers to succeed? S.R: HAVE NO REGRETS, your playing days are too short, do it on the pitch, use your gut instinct - NEVER walk away from a game thinking that you could have done more.
