By Cllr David Reilly The white mountain bike at the Water Orton Marsh Lane junction with the A446 is a poignant reminder of the danger of travelling on our local roads.
As part of my Borough Community Safety role I recently analysed data for serious road accidents when people have been killed or badly injured over the last three years in North Warwickshire. The results are concerning. The data shows that if you are an adult in a car, or on a motorbike or bicycle, then when you are at a road junction between the hours of 3pm and 7pm you stand the greatest chance of being involved in a serious road accident. Serious accidents happen on our local roads, not just the motorways. Local A roads, B roads and our country lanes all feature. The A446 between Coleshill and the Belfry shows in the data, as does Trinity Road by Planters Garden Centre which links the A5 roundabout at Junction 10 to Kingsbury. On the local motorway network, there are two clear locations where serious accidents happen: On the M42 where it joins with the M6 when you’re travelling from Coventry or Solihull to Dunton
Hall Junction 9; and at the slip road a mile further on at junction 9 where the M6, M42 and Toll Road diverge. So, what is being done? With North Warwickshire Community Safety Partnership colleagues, I am pushing hard to deliver our effective joint response to help make our roads safer. The plan includes a range of responses including championing our case with HS2 and Highways England to ensure we can increase the number of cycle paths that can be used for commuting and leisure, and of course, working with Warwickshire County Council Highways Department and our local police and fire service to look at road design and improving driving standards. As a Borough Councillor, I have submitted evidence to the Courts as part of our application for a borough wide injunction to ban boy racer gatherings and their dangerous and anti-social activity from all our roads in North Warwickshire. Engineering changes to our roads costs significant amounts of money, but there are also low cost interventions we are championing too. Our local policing team are delivering Community Speedwatch with our Parish Councils and volunteers. There are free interventions that we are promoting too, not least
of all this one – getting the message out to as many people as possible. So, if you are at a road junction between the hours of 3pm and 7pm then please think about the statistics and please take extra care. There are some positives in the accident data and a key one is that children, with the awful exception of one incident, did not feature in the serious injury data. Clearly the educational road safety work being delivered in partnership between our schools, the fire service and the police is working and long may it do so. We really do need to get pushbikes off our fast roads and onto purpose built or safe routes that link our local villages, we also need to provide safe routes to Kingsbury Water Park and Middleton Hall, as well as to employment sites at Hams Hall and Station Road. This is not an easy or cheap task but I taking every opportunity to include road safety improvements in my negotiations with HS2 and Highways England, as well as when considering local planning applications. If you would like to know more or have any ideas about how we can make our local roads safer then please email me at davidreilly@northwarks.gov.uk

Coleshill Town draw Sporting Khalsa in FA Vase Quarter Final home clash on the 18th February Match Report
FA Vase 5th Round Crowborough Athletic 3 Coleshill Town 6
Nine goals, four penalties, a penalty save, a Red card and a Hat-Trick, this game had everything.
Little old Coleshill Town travelled to Crowborough who are top of the Southern Counties East League and coming off the back of an unbeaten run of 32 games. A crowd of 605 witnessed
a Non-League Level 5 game of the highest order but it has to be said that the Coleshill contingent that numbered around 40 sang their hearts out and pushed their team to victory. Crowborough took the lead on 18 minutes and then had a penalty saved by Town keeper Paul Hathaway but the Colemen were 2-1 up by half time with two Dean Rathbone penalties. Reece Leek scored the third before Dean Rathbone completed his hat-trick, 4-1 game over,
oh No! The home team hit back with a quick double to make it 4-3 and then Josh Quaynor was sent off for a second yellow card. This was real backs against the wall but Coleshill are masters of break away goals and Jordan Nadat helped himself to number 5 before the same player unselfishly passed the ball to Simeon Cobourne for the simplest of tap ins for Number 6. Quarter Final of the FA Vase! Unbelievable! Well done Coleshill!

Charity Ch Local www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk I live in Coleshill and have done so for the majority of my life.
I have taken the brave (crazy!) decision to run the London Marathon April 2017 in aid of Mary Ann Evans Hospice in Nuneaton, which offers end of life care and bereavement services to members of the North Warwickshire community, including Coleshill. I am a keen runner and am working hard to slowly build up my mileage in order to prepare for the marathon. This is being fitted in around being a mum of two young boys, as well as working part-time. To help reach my target, I am holding a race night at Coleshill Town Football Club in February
2017. I will be doing a raffle, in order to assist in raising as much money as possible for my marathon run, which is in aid of such a worthy cause. Prizes so far include free accommodation in a Spanish villa for a weekend, as well as tickets to watch a Coventry City football match. I could also really do with a Sponsor for my Running Vest. Imagine your company name on the telly as I finish the London Marathon (no guarantee it will be on TV), but I will do everything I can to get your logo noticed. Cllr Adam Farrell
Town & Borough Councillor Coleshill North
REGULAR COLUMN
It’s that time of year again when local Council’s set their budget, decide on Council Tax and begin planning for the future.
At Coleshill Town Council we have again voted to freeze Council Tax. It means that in 2017-2018 you’ll be paying less to the Town Council than you did in 2009. That doesn’t mean that we’re delivering fewer services. In fact, we’re delivering more than ever and we’re investing hundreds of thousands of pounds in to the community buildings we own and the land we provide around the town. The budget we set in January will mean the Council continues to offer all of the services we do at the moment, including the Coleshill Hub advice centre at the Town Hall.
We’ll be looking to invest a further sum at the Memorial Park, make renovations at the Community Centre and the Town Hall (including a new kitchen) and we’ll be getting moving on the plans to expand our cemetery. We’ve also committed to working with the Church to help them achieve their aim of a more open, accessible and community based building. Our grants fund will continue, the youth club will continue and so will the commitment to supporting the many hundreds of people we support at the Coleshill Hub. This is a good budget for Coleshill but of course it is action that matters and we now have to implement all the great things this budget allows.

However this was not confirmed in the STP document that was released at the end of last year. on this issue. Prime Minister Theresa May gave a keynote speech on Brexit last Tuesday which was significant for many reasons. Mrs May outlined
that we will prioritise immigration controls over membership of the single market. The PM acknowledge that the sheer volume of net migration has put pressures on our systems and services. Current EU rules stipulate that without freedom of movement within the EU – an open door immigration policy without limits – tariff free access to the single market is not possible. This is a prime example of the EU being unwilling to reform and a key reason for why the UK voted to leave the EU. I was pleased that the PM confirmed that Britain will regain full control of our own laws including leaving the European Court of Justice. It will be for our Government alone to make, repeal or change our own laws. Positively, Mrs May also confirmed that all workers’ rights will be protected after we leave the EU, going on to say that she wants Britain to emerge as a new global leading and trading nation and as equal partners with the EU, but not part of it or ‘half in, half out’. Mrs May has called for a new constructive partnership, something I am looking forward to. Finally, whilst I was disappointed in the Supreme Court ruling that says Parliament must vote on whether to trigger “Article 50”, the mechanism by which we will leave the EU, I am confident that this will not derail the progress that we have already seen and Article 50 is still on track to be triggered by the end of March this year. Along with 67% of constituents, I voted to leave the EU back in June and I can re-assure you all that when the Parliament vote comes, I will still be voting to leave and supporting the Government view that this needs to be done as soon as possible, in the best interests of the UK. If you would like to contact me to book a surgery appointment or discuss a local or national issue, you can either email me - craig.tracey.mp@ parliament.uk or alternatively call me on 01827 715243”

Widening horizons in sixth form Ed Education www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk The Coleshill School Sixth Form welcomes Sinite, our exchange student from Switzerland.
These exchanges are a fanastic experience and Sinite will gain so much from spending four months with us and our students will also gain by spending time with her and widening their horizons.. Widening horizons is something that we want to do with all our students at The Coleshill School and it can have an international dimension or a much more local one. Recently, our students who hooked up with B46 The Coleshill Business Networking Group to explore ways of partnering local businesses in their fundraising efforts for a trip abroad. More locally we have been taking to Solihull Council about their new IT apprenticeships and looking at a scheme with Woodlands school where our students will work along-
side their students on an integrated skills project. We also had some great news in that three of our students have been accepted onto the prestigious Cambridge University Law Conference. This is a real accolade in our first year of teaching Law at A level. Last week also saw the first deadline for applications to our sixth form and we've already had some first class applications. We are delighted to have received significantly more applications this year, including from other schools which reflects the increased popularly of our bespoke and vibrant Sixth Form. We are still taking applications and have places available. Applications are welcome from across all areas – there are no catchment area restrictions. Fly Tipping:
A Call to Arms Dave Reilly is Borough Councillor for Water Orton and is championing the local response to fly tipping News Ln Local www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk
By Cllr David Reilly Like me I am sure you are wholly fed up with the constant incidents of fly-tipping that are plaguing our area. It feels as though you can’t travel anywhere locally without seeing somebody else’s waste dumped for others to clean up. Whether it be the huge bales of industrial waste that have been dumped on the banks of the River Tame, or the countless roadside piles of bin bags and building materials, old fridges or settees, it all causes environmental damage and on occasions health risks. As part of drive to get a grip of the problem I would like to ask for your help to act as a ‘Guardian’ of our villages and countryside. The Borough Council is working hard, not only to clean up the mess and prosecute perpetrators, but also to properly understand why things have become so bad recently. There aren’t any simple answers or solutions so far, but we are fully on the case and have achieve good recent successes with prosecutions that have resulted in significant fines. Over the coming months we will be working with our local parish councils to develop our ‘Guardianship’ plan. Your support, whether it be as part of a coordinated parish council response or an individual response, will be fundamental to success. There are three ways you can help: Firstly, and definitely only if safe to do so, please look out for people fly tipping. Clearly they are using cars, vans and in some circumstances lorries. If you see someone dumping rubbish then try get a registration number and description of the person dumping it and vehicle, but only if it is safe to do so. Please don’t take risks with your own safety. Secondly, if you hire a workman or a ‘man with a van’ to dispose of your household or
business waste then please do make sure that they are licenced. It is your lawful duty to check that they hold a Waste Carriers Licence. You can do this by looking on the internet by searching ‘Environment Agency Register of waste carries, brokers and dealers’ or by phoning North Warwickshire Borough Council. If you don’t check and they fly tip your rubbish, then you risk being prosecuted, even though you never intended that they would not dispose of the rubbish lawfully. A Birmingham landlord found this out to his cost when he paid a man with a van to clear the contents of a flat he was renting out. The man with the van dumped the rubbish in Water Orton and following an excellent Borough Council prosecution the flat owner was fined two and a half thousand pounds! Thirdly, please report any fly tipped rubbish when you see it. Unfortunately, the borough does not have the authority to remove rubbish from private land, but where we do have authority our council officers provide a quick response and will start an investigation to identify who dumped it. You can report it on-line via the Borough Council web site, www.northwarks.gov.uk, or by phone to your local councillor or the council switchboard 01827 715341. Tell us the location and type of rubbish, but please don’t touch it as it could be hazardous. We are investing in more overt and covert CCTV and we are trialling a joint intervention with the police and County Council to implement a Public Place Protection Order at a local fly tipping hotspot as part of a series of measures that we plan to use across specific problem locations in the borough in the coming year. If you have any questions or ideas about our plans to tackle fly tipping then please email me on davidreilly@northwarks.gov.uk

On 16th January, Brian Teale gave a very interesting talk on Bletchley Park, the central site for British code breakers during World War II. Bletchley Park regularly penetrated the secret communications of the Axis powers – most notably the German military’s Lorenz and Enigma cipher machines. The code breakers came from a variety of backgrounds: linguists, chess champions, and crossword experts were common. A substantial percentage of the staff was women. All were sworn to secrecy. Alan Turing, the brilliant Cambridge computer scientist, mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst and theoretical biologist, was the most famous of the code breakers. Together with his colleagues he developed the Bombe (based on the Polish Bomba), an electromechanical device used by British cryptologists to help decipher German Enigma machine-encrypted messages. Research telephone engineer Tommy Flowers developed Colossus, an electronic machine that used 2,500 thermionic valves (radio valves), to decode Lorenz machine-encrypted messages. In 1946, two Colossus machines were moved to Cheltenham: these were dismantled in 1959 and 1960. Tony Sale, a British electronics engineer, uncovered information on the Colossus. The huge machine was rebuilt between 1993 and 2008 and is on view in The National Museum of Computing, located in Bletchley Park.
It is reckoned that the Bletchley Park cryptographers shortened the war by two to four years, and that without them the outcome of World War II would have been uncertain. Facts at a glance: • Bletchley Park is located in Bletchley, a constituent town of Milton Keynes in Buckinghamshire. • Germany, Italy, and Japan were the Axis powers. • Lorenz machines were rotor
stream cipher machines used by the German Army during World War II. • Enigma machines were a series of electro-mechanical rotor cipher machines. A German engineer, Arthur Scherbius, invented the first Enigma machine in 1918. He approached the German Navy and Foreign Office with his design. Neither was interested. Undeterred, he then sold the machines for commercial use. • In the 1930s, the German military recognised the value of the
Enigma machine. They adopted it, and used it to send coded secret messages. • Several different Enigma models were produced, but the German military models are the most commonly recognised. • Marian Rejewski, a Polish mathematician and cryptologist, devised the Bomba, an electrically powered aggregate of six Enigmas. Capable at first of Enigma decryption, later German changes to Enigma meant that the Poles could no longer decrypt effectively. Five weeks before
the outbreak of World War II, the Poles gave information on Enigma decryption to the Allies. • On 15 August 1939, Bletchley Park came into being. We have a fascinating programme of speakers scheduled for 2017. Why not join us? It’s never too late to learn! At our January meeting, the speaker Dave Moylan gave a fascinating performance entitled “How’s yer father?” of old-fashioned entertainments including music hall, jokes, song-and -dance and conjuring as well as remembering many of the old greats such as Mike and Bernie Winters, Leslie Sarony, Al Read, Tommy Handley and Max Wall. His tap-dance in a pair of shoes with castanets attached brought the house down. With help from his glamorous assistant, member Mal Downes he cut up pieces of string, knotted them together and miraculously produced a long, unknotted length of string. He also swallowed handfuls of small scraps of paper then produced from his mouth yards of paper in a long, unbroken stream. Muriel Townshend won the competition for a Christmas cracker joke: Q: Why are Christmas trees so bad at sewing A: Because they drop their needles. (Boom-boom!) In second place was Jane Mills with this rib-tickler: Q: How do they vote at the North Pole? A: Ice to the right, snows to the left. Brenda Sheard was third with her joke: Q: Why do the French eat snails? A: Because they can’t bear fast food. Jane Hewitt presented the cup for the most points won during the monthly competitions throughout 2016 to our President Elaine Partridge. Each member chose which resolution to recommend for debate at the National AGM
at Liverpool in June from a list that included: ways to alleviate loneliness among different age-groups, more awareness and action over Female Genital Mutilation, equal access to maternal mental health services for vulnerable women currently losing out in the postcode lottery of support services and action on keeping synthetic microplastic fibres from contaminating the oceans. We welcomed two new members and are delighted that several previous visitors are considering joining. During social time, we played a game devised by Jane Mills, identifying the catchphrases of famous comics, including: “Turned out nice again” (George Formby), “Can you hear me, mother?” (Sandy Powell) and “All in the best possible taste!” (Kenny Everett.) Members are invited to a “Craft Dabble Day” at Mancetter Village Hall on March 4th from 10am - 3pm, where they will get the chance to try their hand at a range of different crafts and skills. Wishaw WI will host the Spring Group Meeting at Coleshill Town Hall on Thursday, March 9th when the speaker will be Mrs Victor Bruce who bills herself as “Housewife in the Air.” The competition will be for two spring photographs from each of the three WIs taking part, Wishaw, Coleshill and Curdworth. Our next meeting on February 14th will feature a Balloon Debate staged by girls from Coleshill School. The competition is for a Valentine verse for a famous woman. Visitors welcome as always.

News Ln Local www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk PUPILS from Woodlands School in Coleshill were left ‘wheeling for joy’ after receiving 20 free bikes and helmets and taking part in a workshop to get to grips with essential bike maintenance. The bikes were donated by Halfords to help encourage more children – who may not necessarily have access to bikes – to cycle. Halfords Local & Community Marketing Manager Domonique Lippett and Halfords Castle Bromwich Cycle Mechanic Jack Pitchford presented the bikes to Head teacher Iain Pater-
son, MP Craig Tracey and of course, some very excited children. Mr Iain Paterson said: “Our pupils were thrilled when the bikes and helmets arrived from Halfords, and couldn’t wait to try them out. With these bikes our pupils will be able to develop their cycling skills in preparation for their bikeability training. The scheme also powerfully promotes the importance of a healthy and active lifestyle. We are grateful to Halfords for their generosity, and for working so hard to provide a range of bikes that will meet diverse needs.” Each bike has been collected from customers who donate unwanted bikes through Halfords’ national trade-in events and has been reconditioned through a rehabilitation
programme Halfords runs with Onley prison. The programme trains offenders in bike mechanic skills, giving them future employment opportunities and aiding personal development. A new programme at Drake Hall Women’s prison was opened just last week which will mean even more bikes will be able to be reconditioned for schools. MP Craig Tracey added: “I am delighted to support such a fantastic initiative. The scheme will inspire Woodlands pupils to stay active and healthy. They will benefit from a tremendous boost to their self-esteem and independence skills”. Halfords Local & Community Marketing Manager Domonique Lippett comments “We’re delighted to be able to provide bikes and hel-
mets to local pupils in Coleshill and with the cycle workshop we hope to give them the skills to keep them in tip top condition.” “The bikes will encourage youngsters at the school to get out on their bike, something which will hopefully develop into a life-long interest and our workshop runs through the essential safety checks and teaches the pupils how to make simple repairs such as inflating a tyre.” Now in its second year, the scheme will donate around 500 children’s bikes and new bike helmets to schools in the eight cycling cities of Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Newcastle, Bristol, Cambridge, Oxford and Norwich. Through national trade-in events Halfords has donated over 7,000
adult bikes to the charity Re-Cycle, which sends unwanted bikes to people in need in Africa and teaches the skills needed for repair and maintenance for a sustainable solution. This schools donation programme is just part of the Halfords’ community activity. There are also a number of community projects that are regularly run across the UK and the Republic of Ireland such as free kids’ bike workshops in schools and in cub groups. Over 5,000 school children have participated in the Gearup school bike workshops this year alone. 80 stores across the Halfords group regularly take bike donations for Re-cycle so if you have a bike that you would like to donate, please visit www.halfords.com/re-cycle1

For Water Orton based theatre group The Company of the Curtain 2017 is a milestone year News Ln Local www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk
Since its foundation in 1937, the Company has presented three plays per season on an almost uninterrupted basis. Even during the dark years of the second World War, actors were dispatched to local army camps to entertain the troops. This year the Company proudly celebrates its 80th birthday and our next production will be number 217. Having presented several plays by the hugely talented playwright Frank Vickery, the last being Family Planning for which the Company won a prestigious drama award, it is fitting that another of his excellent plays should be chosen to start the new season. The play ALL’S FAIR is a poignant comedy set in the wartime Rhondda and captures perfectly the claustrophobic yet protective and supportive atmosphere of life in the Welsh Valleys in 1942. The two central characters, Dilys, in love with an American GI (married but offering the chance of
escape) and Sophie, frustrated at being unmarried at twenty eight and more than happy to settle for Dilys’ rather dull brother Trevor – are contrasted and astutely observed, as are the other members of the household: Mother nearing the end of her years and precocious Brenda, trembling on the brink of adolescence and thrilled with her first taste of banana.
A sharp comedy peppered with very funny lines. ALL’S FAIR opens at Curdworth Village Hall on Tuesday 7th and runs to Saturday 11th February 2017. Tickets from £6 can be purchased on line at www.companyofthecurtain. com and from our box office tel; 01675 463095, email info@companyofthecurtain.com. The venue enjoys a convivial atmosphere, free parking. and a licensed bar. The Company promises you a quality production and a thoroughly enjoyable evening’s entertainment.

Seven campaign groups representing diverse interests, including the TaxPayers’ Alliance, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace, are asking the public to make their opposition known to MPs including Prime Minister Theresa May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. With the third reading of the High Speed Rail Bill in the House of Lords set for tomorrow, the threat of HS2 becoming a reality is closing in fast. The £55.7bn project is due to be rubber-stamped by MP’s and awarded Royal Assent in the coming weeks. Outside of HS2 Ltd, the Department for Transport and the cabal of lobbyists and contractors that stand to directly benefit from its construction, it is hard to find many people who are enthused by the prospect of spending a vast amount of money on a project that will not deliver its self-imposed objectives, be environmentally destructive and provide appalling value for money. HS2 cannot meet its stated objective of delivering ‘hugely enhanced capacity and connectivity between our major conurbations’ because it

The Coleshill Post
Introducing Lowe Sawyer Financial Planning Ltd
Welcome to the first of our regular articles, where we hope to provide insight into the financial world. In recent times we’ve witnessed the Brexit decision, the election of Donald Trump and the biggest changes to pension legislation for a generation. In this constantly changing en-
vironment, we’ve found an increasing demand for a source of ongoing trusted advice with regards to financial planning, delivered through ourselves as wealth managers. Wealth management is a relatively new profession, so it’s not surprising that most people are vague about what wealth managers actually do. Wealth management addresses a wide range of issues. A wealth manager can help you with such issues as: investing a lump sum, deciding how much you need to save in order to retire comfortably, estate planning and saving inheritance tax, dividing up pension entitlements on a divorce or separation, getting the right types and amounts of life and health insurance, planning to pay school or university fees, and providing a general financial health check.
These are crucial issues for most people and their families, and it’s very important for a wealth manager to have a thorough understanding of clients’ aims and challenges. It’s generally best to look at the whole of an individual’s financial affairs across the board, not just the issue that is of most immediate concern. It can sometimes be hard to deal with one particular issue in isolation because most areas of financial planning are interconnected. Initially the wealth manager and client must get to know each other well enough to decide whether to take the relationship further and the best way for it to work. The chemistry will need to be right as a potential client, you should be asking yourself: do I trust this person and can I work with them? And it’s important to settle the practicalities: does this adviser
and the firm have the right expertise and can they provide what I am looking for? The wealth manager’s job is to find out what the client wants to achieve with their money, both now and in the future. That means gaining a thorough understanding of their views about such issues as borrowing, investing, spending now and in the future, retirement and estate planning. Most people do not think about their future very much – at least not in a very organised way and not from a financial perspective. Most clients want their adviser to keep an eye on their investments and other financial arrangements; reviewing your arrangements regularly is a key fundamental of active wealth management. The review process is intended to act as a catch up with what has changed – either in your own circumstances or in the
financial world generally - but this might not turn out to be the case where there have been some very substantial changes in circumstances like a marriage, divorce or a substantial inheritance. It is possible to carry out your own wealth management if you have the knowledge, time, patience and self-discipline. But there are good reasons why you probably won’t want to – even if you have all these characteristics. You may also find it hard to make these big decisions alone. UK house prices to increase by 3% in 2017 RICS annual housing market forecast • Transactions set to stabilise in line with recent trend but fall short of full year 2016 outturn • Supply shortfall to continue pushing prices higher with prices to increase by 3% • Rents likely to increase by 2-3% across the UK in 2017 House prices in the UK will see an average increase of 3% over the course of next year as the number of transactions stabilises, according to the RICS housing forecast for 2017. Following on from the 2016 forecast, the supply pipeline or lack of it is at the forefront of the analysis and dominates the residential market. While there is an improvement, the legacy of building on an insufficient scale has left the average inventory on estate agents books close to a historic low*. Looking forward, transaction activity will stabilise and is likely to come in between 1.15 and

Midlands Manufacturing: centre on the world’s stage B
Local Business
www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk
By Bhanu Dhir There was a question raised on Twitter this morning about the priority of manufacturing in 2117. Great question bearing in mind what was once a proud industry and the source Great Britain’s economic success worldwide has now been reduced to 10% of the economy. To be blunt, gambling has been partly responsible for the demise of manufacturing. I don’t mean people spending profits in casinos; rather, we seem to have created a culture where it is more profitable to speculate on the future value of a company and place bets on whether the value will go up or down and place further bets on whether your bet was right or wrong.
Although writers like Michael Lewis and John Lanchester can better describe the events that led up to the 2008 global financial crash much better than I ever can, basically what contributed to crash was the ability of the financial sector to place a value on loans to people who could never pay them back and sell those loans as a package with a five star rating. Then you can bet on whether the value of those packages will go up or down at a time when the financial sector around the world is looking for certainty in its return on investment. In my worldview, manufacturing is making things that people need whether it is a car, injection moulding equipment, a bottle of juice, a work of art or writing a book. The finance sector should be there to nurture its growth. Joseph Schumpeter, my favourite economist, came up with the term ‘gales of creative destruction.’ He said that the availabil-
ity of credit would enable business people to borrow money to create disruptive technologies that would overtake stale incumbents causing them to be destroyed. One day the new technologies would themselves be overtaken as they became stale because credit was available to all to help them pursue their business ideas. It’s not like that anymore. Those with wealth have put constraints on those who offer finance. Banks will only offer loans to ‘safe bets’ and alternative financing will cost you 12% above base. Governments are often clueless when it comes to offering financial support, offering grants and seldom recovering inducements and incentives to foreign multinationals that politicians pursue as a quick headline. We know that smaller businesses are riskier but for a government not to think of a sustainable pipeline of affordable loans means it has cut off most

routes to disruption, leaving incumbents unchallenged in their stale technologies and out of date business models. Going back to the question about manufacturing in 2117, what will it look like? Current technologies being implemented around the world enable connectivity between component suppliers, assemblers and customers. The parts you may be building for say a large car company, could talk to you and tell you how well they are performing in the overall vehicle. This will enable you to use real time data to innovate and improve the quality of your components. Industry 4.0 and servitization are at the heart of this. By 2117 manufacturing will be customer driven technology enabled craftwork where configurable robotics is used to produce unique goods. We probably won’t need our own cars in 100 years but you will be able to make your own exoskeleton that allows you to reach mountaintops to record beautiful scenery on your chosen social media package. Manufacturers will become the intermediaries providing affordable services to nearly every person in the world. This isn’t meant to be science fic-
tion. There is a programme that the UK government is pursuing called smart cities and I think this, with the right vision for manufacturing across the Midlands, just might be the enabler for something extraordinary. We are just on the starting blocks but my vision for a reimagined Midlands Smart Cities project needs to provide the answer to the following questions: 1. Can we reduce the cost of energy across the Midlands by 50%? 2. Can we use technology to facilitate an integrated end to end transportation service across the region that is multi modal, convenient and personalised and is competitively priced with the current offers? 3. Can we create a technology backbone that facilitates industry 4.0 across manufacturers in the West Midlands so that we can outperform global competition? If we get the answers to these questions right, and I do believe the answers are out there, as well as the money to finance it, the Midlands will once again become the manufacturing centre of the world. The Midlands matter; the right support and technology matters; #manufacturingmatters. I will keep you posted on our progress.

Over the last month we have seen some big news items worldwide. We are continuing our interview with one of the region’s top manufacturers, Paul Cadman on some of these issues and how they impact upon manufacturing and on local businesses.
Yes, the process we go through to trigger Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty which became law in December 2009.
The Treaty is designed to make the EU ‘more democratic, more transparent and more efficient’ and is an agreement signed by the heads of state and governments of countries that are EU members. Triggering Article 50, which is a formal notification of the intention to withdraw, starts the process. After that, the Treaties that govern membership no longer apply to Britain. The terms of exit will be negotiated between Britain’s 27 counterparts, and each will have a veto over the conditions. It will also be subject to ratification in individual national parliaments. Our Prime Minister wants to officially leave the EU by April 2019 which means that Article 50 will have to be triggered by March 2017 at the latest and we now know that Parliament will have to approve and that a very short bill has been drafted to enable the approval. MPs only have 5 days to debate this very important issue. How does the inauguration of President Trump fit into the Brexit conversation? Until we leave the EU, we are bound by its rules which mean that we cannot set our own trade agreements. Trump seems eager to do business with the UK which is a very good thing. We need to ensure that our manufactured goods are not subjected to tariffs, the US market being heavily protectionist. However, I get a sense that any future trade arrangements will be more about the UK being able to access US financial markets and the US being able to access our agricultural, pharmaceutical, education, health and welfare markets. We do have a positive trade balance with the US for goods of £1.4 billion (compared to a negative trade balance with Germany of £3 billion). Our services trade with the US in Q3 2016 was nearly £7 billion. With the EU it was almost £10 billion. We need to export more manufactured goods: according to the Office of National Statistics (November 2016) the UK’s deficit on trade in goods and services was estimated to have been £4.2 billion in November 2016 compared to £1.6 billion in October 2016. This £2.6 billion difference reflects a £3.3 billion increase in imports, partially offset by a £0.7 billion increase in exports. The widening of the deficit is attributed to trade in goods in which there were increased imports from
both EU and non-EU countries, partially offset by an increase in exports to EU countries. The main cause of the widening monthly deficit for trade in goods was a widening of the deficit for both semi-manufactures and finished manufactures. What is your take on the government’s Industrial Strategy? The Government has published its ten pillars supporting the Industrial Strategy. It is a good step forward. When every other country in the world is intervening to support their local industries, it is good to see that our government may have decided to do the same. 80% of local businesses say that the biggest barrier to their business growth is the lack of skilled people. There is great concern that our education system is failing to produce the kind of people businesses need. In 2015 over 70% of business leaders in the area said that school leavers were not fit for work. Having schools compete with Technical Colleges over the selection 14 year-olds is resulting in an inadequate supply of skilled young people. I worry that immigration rules post Brexit will impose the same restrictions on EU workers as it has on skilled workers from the rest of the world. This is a critical issue for the Prime Minister to address. The West Midlands continues to outperform the national economy bolstered by the performance of manufacturing which makes up nearly 40% of the regional economy when associated services are included. The UK depends upon the prowess of the West Midlands and this needs to be recognised and supported in the Industrial Strategy. It is difficult to argue with the ten pillars, but I am comparing it to the eight point productivity plan that Osborne introduced when he was Chancellor, which now seems to have been dropped. They are all worthy but we, as business people, need to hold our representatives to account for delivering benefits to our manufacturing base and not just rely on Foreign Direct Investment. At a time when all branches of government, including those responsible for trade, are being depleted of resources, the Prime Minister is either announcing a significant turnaround or will, like her predecessors, be letting us down again. The Manufacturer published an Annual Report for 2017. What’s in it? Firstly I want to say that it is an excellent report. It looks ahead at themes I have talked about at previous interviews such as Industry 4.0 and servitization. Technology will enable us to create ‘smart components:’ ones that can interact with us as suppliers, our customers and the end users themselves through mobile phones or tablets. Properly connected manufacturers can get a huge am9unt of information on the performance of their products
and that information has real value. 44% of businesses surveyed in the report say they are beginners when it comes to servitization and two-thirds say they are aware of Industry 4.0. I am setting up a lobbying and business support group (called manufacturing Matters) to work with organisations like The Manufacturer and Chambers of Commerce to ensure that our manufacturers take full advantage of what connectivity has to offer. What you say to local business leaders in this area? I think it is time to stand up and be counted. Around here we represent a microcosm of regional and national manufacturing and associated services. We need to shape the Industrial Strategy so it better fits our needs and the consultation associated with it can be found using the link below. My good friend, and a supporter of our manufacturers, Rachel
Eade contributed oral evidence to the House of Commons Committee in October. I will be responding to the consultation through Manufacturing Matters so if you have any thoughts, please let me know. I am happy to come out and see you. You can see Rachel’s evidence on my LinkedIn. https://beisgovuk.citizenspace.com/strategy/industrial-strategy/?utm_campaign=gov&utm_source=gov.uk&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=cons-page A final word: it is now less than 100 days until we are able to vote for the first Metro Mayor for the West Midlands Metropolitan area, something that could help us shape our future success, I am asking businesses to tell me what they want from the Mayor and my survey can be found using this link. https://www.sur veymonkey.co.uk/r/ LQH53DD

B46 Business discuss HS2 at Coleshill Town Hall
THE BOOT INN The nook steak and grill now open from 12-3 | 5-9 Tuesday to Friday, Saturday 12-9 and Sunday lunch 12-4 On Wednesday 11th January, nearly 40 local business attended the Business B46 breakfast event at Coleshill Town Hall. It was Business B46’s busiest ever January event, with a great mix of regulars and new attendees. The topic for the morning was the highly controversial HS2 train development. Jonathan Lord, HS2’s Senior West Midlands Community Engagement Officer and Rachel Johnson, Community Engagement Manager presented the HS2 vision and proposed route. Their engaging and informative presentation included details on development phases and timescales. Attendees also gained valuable insights into contract opportunities and future engagement plans. This was the first opportunity for many attendees to learn the facts of the proposed scheme
and understand the largescale development proposals. Although some contentious questions were asked, there were also many enquiries about timescales and impacts on the local infrastructure; and in particular the road network surrounding Coleshill. If you wish to see a copy of the HS2 presentation that was delivered at on the morning it is available on the Business B46 website http://www. business46.co.uk/ along with the details of all future events. Our next event promises to be equally engaging with Rob Moon and his sales training workshop on how to sell you and your business, on Wed 8th February at Lea Marston Hotel. To book any events or find out more about the networking group please contact the B46 team on info@business46.co.uk.

Pay attention around valentine's day sometimes believing the best in people does not always pay off. Don't take on other peoples troubles they will exploit you. Long term relationships are feeling the love. Valentines day will bring a real surprise this year to all you Arians. Lucky Numbers: 4, 20

A Valentines card creates a puzzle and maybe a problem for you this year. Your love of the finer things in life means you don't do compromise well. So don't, not in any aspect of your life. Full moon on 24th means dressing up and mixing with the right crowd. Lap up those compliments Taurus you deserve them all. After the 26th things will all start to fall into place. Don't make any waves in your relationships right now. No over reacting. You are a little too prone to being argumentative this month, especially after the 7th stay cool and quiet it will pay dividends. Beware a Valentines wish may not be all that it seems. Lucky numbers 8, 34

Your generous heart and giving nature is one of your best attributes but don't waste it on every hard luck story you come across. Use your sympathy on someone who is a proper friend you don't owe these would be friends anything. Transform your image it will pay dividends. And as the moon goes through your sign on the 22nd you can get those creative juices flowing and show people what you can really do when you put your mind to it. Valentines aplenty but be careful what you wish for Leo. I can see hot water ahead. Lucky numbers: 1, 23
Virgo August 24 - September 23
Bored with the mundane everyday routine. Well keep a lid on it for now don't go making any clean sweeping changes just yet. Mars gives you staying power so turn that dull situation round and spice up your life a little. You know how to make the best of those ordinary opportunities and turn them into revelations. The full moon in your sign on the 24th is the time to bring things to a head. Plan a party or get together it will bring you some amazing opportunities both work and social. Enjoy, everyone else certainly will, have a fabulous time. Those Valentines wishes are very genuine but who are they from it may leave you guessing. Lucky Numbers: 6, 14

Scorpio October 24 - November 22

Sagittarius November 23 - December 21
Its time to stop ignoring things. Your 'go along with it' attitude needs a kick this month. Someone has their eye on you and you need to be aware of it. May be at work or socially but you need to keep your wits about you. Once Mars exits on the 7th you may be able to relax a little, but still keep a mindful eye out someone is trying to sabotage you. After the 20th you will be hard pushed to have time for yourself you will be in high demand socially. You will find a new relationship this month if you are single. This will probably start around Valentine's day especially if they finally pluck up courage and actually post that card to you!! Lucky Numbers 3, 38
Capricorn December 22 - January 20
Mars appears in your sign from the 7th and turns everything upside down you will be pulled in every direction. Try and relax don't get too impatient if things are delayed and keep a lid on your temper. You may have a run in with someone in authority don't give them your honest opinion it will not pay!! You will be in demand on valentine's day but beware there is mischief afoot don't be too trusting. There is someone who wants to put you down. Plan anything financial after the 20th and make that decision on that relationship its been going on far too long. Valentine's day is looking rather confrontational this year why don't you know who sent you that card may well be the question you have to answer Capricorn. Lucky numbers: 11, 21

Freedom becomes the top priority in love so beware those who want to tie you down. What do you mean you don't send Valentines cards you will be upsetting someone if you don't Pisces and if thats the case then don't expect any either. Lucky numbers 8, 15

EGGINGTON AND MALIGNAGGI CLASH ON HAYE-BELLEW BILL
Birmingham star faces former World ruler Sam Eggington will defend his WBC International Welterweight title against Paulie Malignaggi at The O2 in London , live on Sky Sports Box Office.
Eggington landed the title in a fight of the year contender with local rival Frankie Gavin in October with an eighth round stoppage in Birmingham and the 23 year old is thrilled to be facing the former two-weight world king on a huge card in the capital. “This is the big name and big card that I've wanted for some time,” said Eggington. “I've asked for these sorts of fights for a while, I got Frankie and now I've got Paulie. He's going to be the biggest name on my record, you just have to look at what he's won and who he has
boxed to see that, but I have asked to fight him for a while now and I am confident that I can beat him, and beating him is a big scalp on my record and it puts me in that World bracket which is where i want to be. “He's good at what he does, he is a bit like Frankie really and fighting him has put me in good stead for this one, he's not the biggest puncher and he's smaller than Frankie, but he's won World titles and been in with everyone. “Paulie’s been at World-level for so long that he's got all the tricks and probably got more to pull out on the night, so I know it's going to be a big test and it's one that I'm going to rise to. This could have been a fight without a title, Paulie is the man I want to beat - that name

on the record will make people stand up and take notice and will make a splash in the US too. It's a fantastic box office bill and I've never been on a bill of this scale so it's really exciting for me.” Malignaggi held World straps at Super-Lightweight and Welterweight and brings both a CV packed with the biggest names in the sport and ambitions to return to World title level. “I am excited as ever to once again return to the UK and fight in front of the most passionate fans in the world,” said Malignaggi. “I know Eggington is young and hungry but my experience and craftiness will be too much for him to overcome.” “What a fight this is and what an opportunity for Sam Eggington,” said promoter Eddie Hearn. “Paulie Malignaggi is one of the biggest names and personalities in the sport and still remains full of skill, heart and desire. “Sam has consistently provided fight fans with entertainment and after his fight of the year contender with Frankie Gavin, this is an incredible opportunity to announce himself on the world stage. is going to be an incredible night at The O2, live on Sky Sports Box Office.” Eggington’s clash with Malignaggi is part of a huge night of action in Greenwich as bitter foes David Haye and Tony Bellew meet in a Heavyweight grudge match and Ohara Davies and Derry Mathews settle their social media feud with Davies’ WBC Silver Lightweight title on the line. Tickets for Haye vs. Bellew sold out in record-breaking time when they went on sale in December.
Bar sports Premier Suite in Cannock's town centre starts off the month of March with a compelling show that will attract Irish boxing fans from all over the Midlands and kickstart the celebrations for St Patrick's Day.
Already the most established boxing venue in the Midlands, owner Scott Murray is kitting out the start of the Irish celebrations with a fantastic show which will see 3 World champions take center stage on March 2nd. Barry McGuigan, Steve Collins and Carl Frampton will be joined by Shane McGuigan for this rare night of Irish boxing at its best. Ekow Essuman pens promotional deal with Frank Warren Gifted Nottingham Welterweight Ekow Essuman is hoping to make a name for himself in professional boxing after signing a long-term promotional deal with top promoter Frank Warren.
The former Great Britain Podium Squad boxer enjoyed a glittering amateur career but believes he'll be able to showcase his true talent now he has made the transition into the paid ranks. 27-year-old Essuman picked up notable wins against current British Middleweight Champion Tommy Langford and 2013 World Championship Gold Medallist Anthony Fowler during an accomplished amateur career and believes he'll have no problem mixing it with the best in the paid code. "My amateur career started quite late at the age of 17 and I had to make up for lost time quickly. After a while I was beating highly-rated fighters who were representing England. After a few months on trial on the GB Team I was progressed onto the Podium Potential Team before ultimately progressing onto the Podium Team where I fought some of the best fighters in the World. "It was a great experience for me but now that I'm pro I'll be able to showcase what I wasn't able to showcase
before. I'm more in control of where I need to develop as a pro and I'm really looking forward to doing that and letting me fists do the talking in the ring." Essuman, trained by former Lightweight Barrington Brown and managed by Jimmy Gill, made his professional bow in December, outpointing journeyman Andrej Cepur in Birmingham. He will fight for the second time as a pro in Nottingham and is keen to display his talents to as many people as possible in the coming months. "Whilst I was with Team GB they nicknamed me 'The Engine' because I had a good boxing engine and was relentless with my combos and pressure. Now I'm more of a technical fighter and that's something that I'm looking forward to showcasing." "Signing with Frank is brilliant for me, he has a well-deserved reputation for developing boxers in the right way and I'm confident he'll do the same with me. The future is looking bright and I can't wait to get started." Manager Jimmy Gill added: "Ekow will definitely go places, he's ambitious and wants to do things the right way. He listens, asks questions and he learns, when you've got somebody like that you know you're half way there." You can follow Ekow on Twitter: ee_engine and Instagram: ee_engine

2017 Six Nations Preview: Can genuine optimism result in another Irish Grand Slam?
By Larry Cooney From The Harp News
It is really hard to believe just how much Irish rugby has picked itself up in the latter half of 2016 to now be considered genuine Grand Slam contenders. A year on from the bleakest of winters for Irish rugby, there is evidence of genuine ‘green shoots’ all over the place. Since last year’s Six Nations which saw Ireland struggle to shake off their World Cup hangover, Joe Schmidt's side have made very real progress. The scalps of all three Southern Hemisphere giants have been taken, while the coach has signed on until the 2019 World Cup. Despite disruption throughout the seven games since last Spring, they have managed to achieve a consistent performance level that will stand them in good stead for the coming challenges. They have lost big names, played with 14 men and experienced adversity against the best teams in the world and managed to stay competitive to the extent that a 50pc success rate in the six fixtures against the 'Big Three' is something that they'll look back on with regret. In all three defeats - the two in South Africa and the second Test against New Zealand - they had their chances to win. Traditionally, Ireland could hit highs on one-off occasions, but their ability to back up performances is the real mark of progress in the second half of 2016. It all bodes well for the forthcoming Six Nations,
where Schmidt will be attempting to win a Grand Slam for the first time at the fourth attempt. It won't be a stated goal, but when holders England arrive in Dublin on the final game of the tournament on 18 March , Schmidt will hope to be going for the clean sweep. But while Scotland have improved, Ireland have always had their measure under Schmidt, while Italy are finding their way under Conor O'Shea. France come to Dublin in week three and are usually fading at the mid-way point, while Wales' win over South Africa doesn't mask the sense that they are a declining force. However England still remain the best side in Europe, but they will miss Billy Vunipola and Chris Robshaw during the tournament. They could be looking for a world-record equalling 18th win in a row on March 18 and the locals would relish nothing more than stopping them in their tracks! Eddie Jones' men are second on the world rankings below New Zealand and will rue the fact that the schedule has denied them a chance to take on the top dogs. The Aussie native was almost delighted that Elliott Daly got sent off in last weekend's win over Argentina because it presented his team with a new challenge. After securing a Grand Slam and a clean sweep in Australia in June, there is a sense that Jones has learnt little about his charges. They are enduring a more attritional season this time around and the Six Nations almost always comes down to the team who can avoid injuries for the duration. Rory
Best made the point that Ireland's 2014 and 2015 Championships were built on consistent selections and, while they've demonstrated an ability to survive disruption and adapt week to week, Schmidt must feel he is due an injury-free run. Having signed on for the remainder of the World Cup cycle, Joe Schmidt has invested heavily in building depth: 18 debuts have been handed out in 2016 and while some of those new faces won't be seen until the summer tour of the United States and Japan, the likes of Josh van der Flier, Garry Ringrose, Finlay Bealham and Ultan Dillane are now firmly part of the selection picture. Any Irish squad that can afford to initially leave Peter O'Mahony out of the equation is always going to be strong and the performance of the Munster captain, Cian Healy and Simon Zebo in the recent Champions Cup fixtures adds fuel to the growing optimism in Irish rugby. A year ago, the picture looked bleak after a disappointing World Cup finish and an under-performance by the provinces in Europe. But the picture has now completely changed with two provinces into the quarter-finals and Connacht within touching distance Joe Schmidt will be sitting pretty when he sits down to announce his Six Nations squad in the coming days. Schmidt assembled his troops over Christmas as he looked to build on an encouraging November by addressing the issues he felt his side can work on. Even immediately after beating Australia, there was talk of even more improvement. The ceiling for this team is certainly very high, the coach can afford to rotate like never before during the Six Nations because of a new-found trust that has come about as a result of the young guns' performances in the last few months. In public, the words Grand and Slam will be banned from the discourse, while any mention of the Lions will be met with platitudes and diversion. But behind closed doors, there will be a clear focus on building on an excellent body of work since the middle of last year. Ireland have nothing to fear in February and March apart fork the threat of complacency which has scuppered so many of Ireland’s hopes in previous campaigns but for the 2017 Six Nations tournament Ireland should aim as high as they can go and settle for nothing less than a Grand Slam.

Saturday 14th January Rocester 0 v 4 Coleshill Town The game was in doubt and although the pitch was very heavy, it was just about playable. Jordan Nadat scored a hat trick and Mykel Beckley got the other goal in a hard fought game against physical Rocester side.
Tuesday 17th January Coleshill Town 4 v 2 Tividale Tividale are in the relegation zone but have a very young, talented side and played some lovely football on Coleshill's 3G pitch. Tividale took the lead but the scores were level by half time with a Josh
Quaynor rocket. Jordan Nadat scored couple, ne from the penalty spot but Tividale hit back again to make it 3-2 before Mykel Beckley scored late on to secure the points.
Saturday 21st January Shepshed Dynamo 1 v 3 Coleshill Town A very heavy pitch and a very physical home team made this game really difficult for Coleshill. The difference between the sides was the quality of Coleshill's finishing. Mykel Beckley, Dean Rathbone and Reece Leek all scored excellent goals after Shepshed had took an early lead.
