"We are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us" Jo Cox MP Cllr Adam Farrell
Town & Borough Councillor Coleshill North
REGULAR COLUMN
The tragic death of Labour MP Jo Cox sent shockwaves through the political world and the country as a whole. A moving vigil was organised at Coleshill Parish Church with around 50 local people attending.
£300 was raised in memory of Jo Cox MP, which will be donated to the collection being organised by her family and friends. Here is a copy of what I said at the vigil: In her maiden speech, Jo Cox MP said “we are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us." I’ve been a Councillor for 5 years now and a follower of politics since my early teens, I can not remember something in the political world that has touched or moved me so much as the tragic events of Thursday afternoon. Why? Quite simply, Jo was a mother, a wife, a daughter and a friend to so many. Her two young children, aged just 3 and 5 will now grow up without a mom, her family will never forget the brutal way in which her life was ended and the country as a whole will be a lesser place without her passion, vision and ideals. The majority of us here today, including myself, will have never met Jo so I want to use this time to briefly set out the amazing life Jo led, despite it being cut short in such a tragic manner. Jo Cox was born in 1974, in the village of Batley. Her father worked in the local cosmetics factory and her mother was
a school secretary. Jo herself worked in the same factory as her father, packaging toothpaste during the holidays, having gained a place at Pembroke College, Cambridge, where she took a degree in social and political studies. After University Jo went on to work for Glenys Kinnock, then a member of the European parliament, she joined Oxfam in 2002. During her time there she worked in war torn countries and humanitarian disaster zones helping those most in need. After nearly a decade at Oxfam, she went on to work as an advisor to Gordon and Sarah Brown as well as Bill Gates, Save the Children and the NSPCC. It was during her time working at Oxfam, that she met her husband, Brendan with whom she had two children who I have no doubt all of us have thought about over the last couple of days. Jo was elected as a Member of Parliament in May 2015 and although only being in Parliament for a short period of time, she gained a reputation for being a straight talker of independent mind. She raised issues on behalf of those who did not have a voice and Jo is widely credited with changing Government policy on Syrian child refugees. Jo was someone who made a difference, throughout her life to those who were not able to help themselves. Jo was a passionate advocate for justice, fairness and equality. Above all, Jo was just a thoroughly decent human being. She teaches us that it is possible to be a
politician and still be human. In the days since Jo’s death, Britain and the world have come together to unite, not just in mourning the loss of Jo, a mother, a wife and a Member of Parliament but also to unite against this attack on our democracy. Her tragic death on Thursday sought to divide people. The only person responsible for Jo’s death is the person who ultimately carried out this horrific and evil act. But it does, I feel put some onus on those of us in political life and the wider public to reflect on the way we conduct ourselves. We must unite to stop division and we must recognise that rhetoric of politicians and others that seeks to pit one part of society against another is not only divisive but also dangerous and as a country we must instead come together in unity. Politicians must change the way we conduct debate and the public should recognize that not all politicians are expenses claiming hypocrites, that most, of all parties and of none, actually enter politics to try and make a difference. The tone of politics is too often aggressive and divisive and whilst politics will always be full of passion because of its very nature, lets hope in light of Jo’s tragic death we see a change in the tone of public debate. I end with the same line that I started with, “we are far more united and have far more in common with each other than things that divide us."

One of their biggest obstacles was walking through woodland through the night having to deal with climbing over tree roots and trudging through heavy mud, thankfully avoiding the rain. Luckily they were helped along their route by family who met them at various stages of this epic journey. Carole and Kaye finished their walk at 7:05am on Sunday morning by being given their medals and enjoying a well-deserved glass of champagne. The plant was introduced into the UK in 1839 and
Warwickshire Wildlife Trust’s Reserves Volunteering Officer Alexis Evans relaxes with the trust’s Nature Force volunteers from as far away as Burbage and Leamington during the latest attack on the plant. The battle to control Himalayan balsam in Coleshill has been waged for several years. Left alone, this non-native, invasive plant will keep coming back. Touch its seed pods, and
it can reach 2.5m tall. Aggressive seed dispersal, coupled with high nectar production which attracts pollinators, often allows it to outcompete native plants which has a detrimental knock on effect to our own wildlife. It can also take over large areas of river bank, substantially increasing the risk of riverbank erosion by out competing native vegetation which would normally hold the banks firm. When balsam dies in the autumn it leaves only bare soil which is easily eroded and washed away by rain or floods. Man is its only predator.

Warwickshire Wildlife Trust is the leading local charity working for wildlife and local communities across Warwickshire, Coventry and Solihull. It has worked for more than 50 years to protect wildlife and wild places and to educate, influence and inspire people about nature conservation. It manages over 60 of the best sites for wildlife in the county, securing a future for many important habitats and species which might otherwise be lost. Coleshill Local Nature Reserve at Cole End Park is one of them. The landowners, North Warwickshire Borough Council, are responsible for certain elements of management, like access, the playground and mowing. WWT have a management plan for the site which is reviewed and updated. Whitacre Heath Nature Reserve is another, a good example of vegetation succession, from open water through marsh into willow carr and woodland. A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) the reserve is 44 hectares of pools, woodland and wet grassland formed as a result of old sand and gravel workings. It is important for breeding water birds. The pools support species including little grebe, tufted duck, water rail and teal. Waders such as lapwing, redshank, curlew and snipe are also regular visitors to the large areas of wet grassland. Other frequently seen birds include great spotted and green woodpeckers and numerous species of warblers, finches, tits and thrushes. Dominated by alder and willow, the wet woodland areas are important for fungi, mosses and liverworts which thrive in damp, shaded conditions. Deadwood provides a home to a number of important beetle species. Frogs and toads thrive in the moist habitats and pools on the reserve. Grass snakes can be seen in March and April basking in the spring sunshine. A walk along one of the self-guided trails may reveal some interesting plants including southern
marsh orchid and the rare blue fleabane, which is only found at a handful of locations in Warwickshire. Keep an eye open for the rare white-letter hairstreak butterfly and watch for emperor dragonflies and broad-bodied chasers in mid-summer flying over the open pools. Work undertaken at Whitacre Heath Nature Reserve by the trust and trust/local volunteers includes woodland and grassland surveys, balsam pulling, coppicing, habitat pile creation, wildflower planting and bird box installation. The Tame Valley Wetlands span from Coleshill to Tamworth and includes several of the most important wildlife sites in the Midlands. It is a vital northsouth migration route, providing essential resting and feeding places for thousands of migrating birds. It has undergone great changes as a result of human activity over the last century. Old gravel workings now form the largest series of interconnected wetlands in the county. Water quality has also improved, vital for aquatic invertebrates and fish, perfect for kingfishers and otters. The valley also has a wealth of heritage features – from relic hedgerows to aqueducts and old pill boxes built during the Second World War. Coleshill doesn’t provide many volunteers to Nature Force, but it provides stimulating gentle exercise and fascinating days out at any of the 60 sites under the care of WWT. Tasks range from meadow and ride cutting in the summer to fencing, coppicing, path work and scrub clearance in the winter. Welcome for the Chasselands News Ln Local www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk Coleshill Twinning Association hosted 33 of their counterparts from Chassieu, the French town in the outskirts of Lyon that we have been linked with since the early eighties.
By Sally Jones Journalist
At Coleshill WI's June meeting, Lisa Colclough of Soul2soul Yoga led members in a gentle form of yoga and then demonstrated some more advanced moves involving impressive core strength and balance. Everyone, including the less mobile, joined in doing arms, legs and hand exercises, stretching and relaxation techniques. Brenda Sheard told members about a recent course on Shakespeare in his 400th anniversary which she had taken at Denman College, the WI's training centre near Abingdon in Oxfordshire. The course included two visits to the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, the first to watch a performance of "Hamlet" set in Africa,
in the main theatre and the second "Dr Faustus" at The Swan Theatre." Denman College offers a range of different residential courses of varying lengths in gracious surroundings and Brenda praised the comfortable accommodation, friendly atmosphere and high-quality meals which allow students to concentrate on their chosen course without the distractions of their day jobs, chores or housework. She encouraged other members to sign up for one of the college's many courses. With the £500 grant awarded by Town Council, the WI has bought a laptop and printing equipment and a gazebo for cover at outdoor events where we often provide refreshments or put on displays. Some of the money will also go towards paying good speakers at our meetings, for example November's demonstration of flower arranging. President Christine Jones asked for volunteers to bake and sell home-made cakes at Coleshill Car-
nival on July 10th at the Memorial Park where we will also be serving soft drinks. We welcomed three visitors who were keen to learn more about the WI. Elaine Partridge won the competition for a flower photograph with her close-up of gaudy orange poppies. Jane Hewitt was second and Christine Jones third. During Social Time, all the members were given a small Bingo card and Gill Tyers was the caller. Everyone stood up and when Gill called out a number that appeared on their card, they had to sit down - and the last person left standing was the winner. We finished with a game of traditional Bingo amid great hilarity. Our next meeting is on July 12th at 7.30 in the Town Hall when our speaker will give a talk on the Warwickshire Animal Rescue Centre. The competition is for a small posy. Visitors welcome as always.
Rolton Kilbride thanks residents for attending consultation Rolton Kilbride would like to thank local residents in Hams Hall for attending the public consultation exhibition at the Lea Marston hotel last month. The company is currently finalising its planning application to build a gasification centre on the industrial site at Faraday Avenue, Hams Hall. Residents were invited to view plans and meet members of the Rolton Kilbride team to ask questions, comment and find out more about the proposal. Andrew Needham, Managing Director of Rolton Kilbride, said: "The exhibition was really well attended and we would like to
thank people for giving up their time to share their views. We've begun the process of evaluating feedback and reviewing how suggestions might be incorporated into our plans to move the project on to the next phase." The centre would use a modern Advanced Conversion Technology (ACT) process called gasification, which uses refuse derived fuel - waste after recycling has taken place. This is converted into a synthetic gas (and ash) by using an external heat source in a low oxygen environment, and both heat and power are produced. The facility would provide predictable and sustainable energy source. Both the power and heat generated would be of-
fered to local businesses at a lower rate. Rolton Kilbride is keen to provide opportunities for local supply chain businesses, which will be promoted during the construction phase, creating jobs and supporting the local economy. More information about the plans and Rolton Kilbride can be found on the website: www.hamshallenergy.co.uk/http:// www.hamshallenergy.co.uk/. Rolton Kilbride is a collaboration between Rolton Group, a long established, multi-disciplined engineering consultancy with specialism in clean-tech and Kilbride, which offers expertise in development and infrastructure.
Much thought had gone into the itinerary for their stay. With a visit every two years, usually in late spring, one might think the possibility of finding somewhere new to go limited, especially as we try to stay within a 50-mile radius of Coleshill. However, our committee scratched its multiple heads and came up with the Coventry Museum of Transport, the Grayson Perry Exhibition at the Herbert Gallery, Byron’s Newstead Abbey (Nottingham) and the Papplewick Pumping Station: as varied a programme as one could wish. The time between the Welcome Party at the Old Market Hall on the Wednesday of their arrival, and our waving a fond farewell to them the following Sunday, after the Saturday night dinner dance at Maxstoke Golf Club, was filled with discovery, conversation, laughter, music, singing, dancing and the sharing of some excellent meals. Such conviviality has to be experienced to be believed. Perhaps these pictures give one a taste of it: at Newstead Table 07 toasts the Twinning; plastic ponchos are the order of the day at Papplewick Pumping Station (just in case one rubbed against one of James Watt’s magnificent steam engines); Annie from Chassieu learns to hand-jive from Paul at Maxstoke. We are always happy to welcome new members. To find out more just click on Coleshill Twinning Association.

Coleshill Country Market news and appeal for new producers By Sally Jones Journalist
Coleshill Country Market which has just celebrated its 47th anniversary, is appealing for more producers to bring home-cooked goods, jams, garden produce, hand crafts, jewellery and cards to sell at the Parish Room, 132 High Street, Coleshill, B46 3BJ.
The Market is held every Friday between 8 and mid-day and attracts a loyal clientele who enjoy sitting down for a cuppa and a chat while making their purchases. Among the longstanding producers are garden experts Dawn Bagley, a florist from Over Whitacre and Martin Cross from Water Orton, who bring a variety of colourful bedding plants, flowers, herbs and vegetable plants while Martin, a wildlife enthusiast also supplies bird food and feeders. Joan Pickworth is renowned for her fruit cakes, preserves and free-range eggs from her own hens and glassmaker Sarah James creates unique stained glass jewellery, poppy brooches and ornaments. Sisters Deanna Baker and Margaret Burrell, the Market Chairman, are both talented cooks, bringing beautiful iced sandwich cakes, fruit tarts and pickles. Among the newcomers are professional gardener Janet Reilly who specialises in cut flowers and gives gardening advice, as does Martin Cross. Jean Thomas brings exquisite crochet and knitting, similar to the shawl she made as a present for Prince George soon after his birth. Christine Jones, the only remaining member of the group who founded the market back in 1969, makes a range of quiches, flapjacks, savouries, lemon drizzle cakes, gingerbread and prizewinning marmalade and is keen to recruit more producers. "The Country Market's got a great atmosphere," she said. "We all enjoy the chance to get together and socialise and the same customers come back week after week as everything is high-quality and home produced. This week, for example we had almost 20 different specialist jams and jellies and Joan's fruitcakes and tea breads literally went like hot cakes. You can join the market as a producer for the princely sum of 5p and everyone is paid for what they sell at the end of each month after we have taken 12.5% to cover the cost of running the market. If anyone is interested in becoming a producer, we'd particularly welcome people who want to sell honey, crafts including woodwork, a variety of baked goods including yeast items plus plants and garden produce. At the first market we had, back in 1969, in pre-decimal days, we took ÂŁ29 12 shillings and 11 pence from 20 producers - and I made just 18 shillings which was a lot of money then." For more information, visit the Country Market or contact Market Secretary Deanna Baker on 01675-463239

On 18th June, 55 year old runner, Jane Lea, completed the 30 Lakeland Peaks, 48 miles and 17000 feet of the Joss Naylor challenge in aid of local good cause, the Mary Ann Evans Hospice!
An exhausted Jane said: “I'm very happy to report that I completed the Joss Naylor Lakeland challenge in 16 hours 26 mins 30 secs. Joss, the famous fell runner, now aged 80 and still out there running the fells, was there at the finish with a congratulatory handshake. His sheepdog Lassie soon relieved me of my leftover energy bar! Also present was my 18 strong support team who had travelled up from all parts of Warwickshire to see me round in style. She described her tough journey to complete the race: “I had set off with Mark Bailey, my first pacer, from Pooley bridge near Ullswater at 3am, wearing a head torch to penetrate the blackness of the night. My band of followers had risen from their tents at 2 am to get to the start and give me a good send off. I had 45 minutes to make it to the summit of Arthur's Pike, the first peak, and I made it in 44.58! Cutting it a bit close, but I hoped to speed up when the sun rose and I could see where I was putting my feet. The mountainous terrain was part grassy, part rocky, part bog at this point, with lots of unexpected holes to fall into.
Jane, 55, completes Lakeland Challenge for Mary Ann Evans Hospice 12 summits and 3.5 hours later I descended off the peaks to the first road support stop at Kirkstone pass. It was still only 6am and a freezing wind blew across the pass but my band of trusty followers were there shouting me all the way. I had a clothes change lady, a catering lady, a timekeeper, a photographer and a masseur, all tending to me at once. I was feeling terribly nauseous and couldn't eat or drink - a really big worry in an endurance event, and I'd like to guess they didn't give much for my chances of completion at that point! Only 5 minutes in the schedule to rest and I was off straight up to the summit of Red Screes (777m) with my next pacer, Mark's son Alex, aged 17. Alex and I had practised the route at a much faster pace so I had to slow him a little so that I could try to eat before my energy vanished. I managed half a slice of dry bread but it was very hard work to keep it down. This was the case throughout
the whole day, eating sultana by sultana, crumb by crumb but somehow I managed to get enough down. The next road support point came just 2.5 hours later, as Alex and I galloped down Seat Sandal to the waiting cheers and loud ringing of cowbells by my friend Debbie. My left knee was starting to ache so I had it strapped up. It was 9am by now and I wouldn't see any more support until 2:30 as I started the long middle section which included some significant peaks such as High Raise (782m) and Bowfell (903m). My pacers on this section were Bob, Mark and Mike with his fit little border terrier Pippa. The terrain was a mix of steep climbing, steep descents, long rough runs across grassy tussocks and strength sapping plods up long gradual hills. By the time I reached Sty Head pass, my next support stop, both knees were screaming on every downhill. The support team had hiked for 1.5 hours to reach this mountain pass, carrying everything
I may need, and I settled down on a rock to tuck into a flask of rice pudding. The one thing I really needed, a second knee support, wasn't there, so I made do with an ice spray. I had the luxury of 10 minutes at this stop - felt like a lifetime! I knew the crowd would be tense as this is a common drop out point for those challengers who can't face the 5 hour very tough and steep final section covering the high rocky peaks around Wasdale. As much as I wanted to stop with pain in my knees and a very upset stomach I couldn't face letting all those people down. They had shown so much confidence in me and it meant a lot. Slowly rising to my feet I hauled myself up Great Gable (899m) following my 2 fresh pacers Dave and Stuart. The descents were rough and rocky but I managed to keep going as I knew with everyone I was closing in on the finish. Climbing up the last major peak Seatallan was like wading through treacle in concrete boots and seemed
never ending. Finally I came over the top of the last ridge and was visible to the supporters who had driven for 2 hours round the roads to get to Wasdale valley. Their shouts echoed all the way up the mountainside and I somehow found the strength to run the last few yards, hardly able to believe I had done it I missed the official fell runners 16 hour target by 26 minutes due to the knee pain, but my driving force was just to finish the challenge, so I am completely over the moon.” Jane has raised a fantastic £300 for the Mary Ann Evans Hospice by taking part in the challenge. If you’d like to congratulate her on her astounding achievement, please visit her justgiving page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Jane-Lea2. The Day I Found My Boobs By Sukhy Nijar
Director of Sipsey Lingerie Remember those little cotton crop top bras with zero support? You know, the ones your mum bought for you because she didn’t know how to tell you that you’re lady lumps had emerged, so she let the crop top bra show you the pathway to womanhood instead. Well from what I can remember that was my first bra; after that I became more conscious about my ever-growing chest.
After a few years of blossoming from a teen to a twenty something, I ventured into the world of high street bras. When you think of getting fitted, what’s the first place that comes to your mind? It has to be M&S! I booked myself in for a fitting and picked out some pretty looking bras; I was a 34 C. All through my early twenties I just assumed that this was my size now, although subconsciously I knew I should get fitted again. With the subconscious rearing its head I decided ….A little while later I returned to a high street store and got myself fitted once more; this time I was put into a 36 C! Now don’t get me wrong; I love my food but I was never a very chubby (not saying 36 is chubby but I have never been more then a size 12) girl, so this news was delivered as a shock to me. A 36 band size? Surely my cup size would have changed as well? Nevertheless I carried on my daily life in my 36 C bras. I started to love lingerie, I went everywhere; La Senza, Victorias Secret, John Lewis, pretty soon my underwear drawer was close to collapsing. I had so many different bras but I always felt that none of them fit me as well as I thought they should. I found myself constantly pulling the band down because it kept riding up my back, I would have to keep

readjusting the straps because they never felt tight enough. Now ladies; if you’ve ever worn a cup size too small you must know the pain of developing, what can only be described as the bane of my life; double boobs. The horrific sight of boob spilling out of the top of my bra and then showing through my top was the final straw. It was a cold weekend in Edinburgh, I had just turned 31 and was wandering around the town centre, slightly lost; I walked past a small boutique with a window full of beautiful lingerie and a sign that read, “fitting service available!” I decided to try getting fitted, it wasn’t a big high street brand but what harm would it do? I’d come to know what to expect from previous fittings, the lady would come in with a tape measure (nothing wrong with tape measures, we use them sometimes as well, but since when are we static?) and wrap it loosely around your under-bust and tell you what your size is. Never checking the bra you have on already to feel if it’s too loose or tight or checking where the underwire sits. Little did I know that this was completely wrong; as I took off my shirt, the fitter first came in to check what I already had on, she felt around my straps and underwire and came to a halt at my band, “This band is more like an elastic sling! You could shoot an arrow with this thing! Definitely way too big, you’re not getting any support.” She carried on; she was very experienced as she visually assessed my size. She nipped out and within minutes she returned, fully equipped with a selection of different bras. She stayed in the changing room and told me she will try me in the first bra she had selected. Well this is different, I was a little shocked and overwhelmed, I was expecting to try by myself. She unhooked me
and slipped me into my first bra, she asked me to scoop my breasts into the cups properly. I felt a little awkward, “don’t be shy my dear, it’s perfectly normal, I need to make sure your measurements are accurate.” I did as she told me to and once I’d finished she fastened the hooks, “don’t forget, always fasten to the first hook and eye and tighten as the bra gives!” I nodded as she checked for space under the band and around the underwire, she adjusted my straps and turned me towards the mirror, “Take a look sweetheart, how does that feel? Better I hope, you were wearing two band sizes too big and three cup sizes too small!” instantly felt the difference; it was the same feeling you get when you try on a pair of shoes for the first time and they surround your feet so perfectly you have to buy them straight away. I looked in the mirror and stared in shock; “Oh my god! I have actual boobs! What size is the bra you’ve fitted me into now?” “It’s a 32 F sweetheart!” I had never seen my figure look so good! My boobs were lifted and completely tucked into the bra cups and the band stayed put where it belonged. I was in complete shock. I had just gone from a C cup to an F cup; it’s safe to say my mind was completely blown. I tried on a few different bras and made my purchases. Back in London, I threw out all of my C cup bras to make room for my new F cups. I had finally seen the light; my days of double boobs and band adjusting were over! I felt like the world was my oyster again. I ditched the mass produced high street and turned my attention to more specialist brands. I started venturing to places like Harrods and Selfridges to buy my lingerie; I still wasn’t very familiar with independents but after a bit of research my interest grew as I realised I would never be fitted as well as I was at the independent in Edinburgh.
Fast-forward to a while later and there I was, London behind me and a new opportunity in front; opening my own independent lingerie boutique. I was both nervous and excited; I always had a natural love for lingerie and fashion and so after going through extensive courses and fitting training, after the long hours spent researching different lingerie brands all the way down to the technical components of a bra; I decided it was time I could help women the same way the fitter in Edinburgh helped me. Lingerie had fast become my passion. Running a business meant physically running, I was and am still constantly on the move. Whether it’s business meetings or tending to customers, I never have time to stay still. Running around has its perks though, I no longer feel guilty about ditching the gym and my worst enemy, the treadmill. During my first few months of running around I realised my bras had become a lot looser than I was used to, so I got fitted again. “You’re in the wrong band size silly, you need a 30 back not a 32!” In just a few months I had dropped a whole band size?! Sukhy – 1, Treadmill - 0. Your body is a phenomenal thing; it is constantly changing. I learnt that for myself; I now get fitted every 6 months and make sure I change my bras as soon as they give way to the tightest hooks. I hope my story gives you a little insight into the wonderful world of lingerie and bra fitting and shows you that your size is not always what it may first seem! My underwear drawer is still ready to collapse though; I guess some things never change!

Do you need a nursery place for your child ?
Arley Sports Centre to close during the day

We currently have just a few spaces left for our September 2016 intake so if you would like a place for your child then please contact Nikki Harris on 01675467540 as soon as possible to book a visit and arrange sessions. Quotes from OFSTED “The quality of teaching across the nursery is outstanding. Staff use their expert knowledge and understanding of how children learn. They provide an exceptional range of high quality learning experiences for children. “ “The exceptional staff practice and carefully organised environment results in highly confident children who achieve excellent levels of independence. Children show superb cooperative skills when managing their surroundings. They play harmoniously and are considerate to one another.”
North Warwickshire Borough Council has voted to close Arley Sports Centre during the day for five days a week. The plans come after the Council was forced to U-turn on its original plan for closure following pressure from local residents and the Labour opposition. The Sports Centre will soon be closed during the day Monday – Friday with the possibility of further changes when the Council’s leisure review concludes in July 2017. Leader of the Labour Group, Cllr Adam Farrell said; “This decision has pre-empted the Council’s leisure review. It singles out Arley and smacks in the face of fairness. The Labour Group has always supported Arley residents in their mission to keep Arley open. We accept there is a need to change the way we operate the Sports Centre but the fairest way to do that is to come to a decision once all leisure services have been reviewed.
The idea that a decision to close the Sports Centre during the day is somehow a positive move is just political spin from a Conservative Council that has failed the people of Arley. This is another example of the incompetence shown by the Conservative administration at North Warwickshire who think they know best and who fail to listen to the people of our borough.” Labour Councillors submitted an amendment to keep Arley Sports Centre open as it is now but this was voted down by Conservative Councillors including, Arley ward Councillors Mark Simpson and Colin Hayfield. Cllr Farrell added, “Arley ward Councillors have let their residents down. They’ve put their party first and shown utter contempt for democracy. The idea that this decision will somehow win them favor in the community they are supposed to represent is madness. The residents of Arley will see how their representatives voted to cut the hours of their Sports Centre whilst making no guarantee on its long term future.”

The final prize of the evening ‘The Awards for Outstanding Contribution to Education’ was presented to one staff member, from each of the seven schools, who each accepted an award from their headteachers. Miss Birmingham has proven she has both By Joshua Williams Writer
After international model Maria Gardner clinched the sought-after Miss Birmingham title earlier this year, she has been inundated with work offers as an ambassador to our second city.
Beauty and compassion are enviable traits but the 22-year-old has proven she has both as she prepares for next month’s glittering Miss England final in Southport. In between her busy schedule which has seen Maria shoot national campaigns for bridal magazines, cosmopolitan, aqua fresh and even Umberto Giannini, where her billboard was displayed next to Kate Moss, Maria proves there's more to her than just a pretty face. At the heart of the competition
lies the Miss World humanitarian charity Beauty with a Purpose of which she has already raised hundreds of pounds for and where she aims to raise even more at her upcoming charity variety show. With charity being at the heart of the competition, Maria's passions also lie in raising funds and awareness for Cancer Research UK where she has just completed the race for life in sash-and-crown. "In my journey, I've wanted to prove that there's more to me, and more to beauty pageants, than just being a model or being 'beautiful'. After seeing the devastation caused by this illness first hand, I want to be able to make a difference with this title. I've always struggled with confidence and self-belief, but Miss Birmingham has given me the opportunity, the drive, and the courage to try to raise funds for vital causes and promote organisations close to my heart".

Life's a Gas in Holeshill! By Mike Walpole Journalist
OLD metal gas mains that have reached the end of their working life are being replaced with new plastic pipes around parts of Coleshill to ensure a safe and reliable gas supply. To save a lot of inconvenience to residents, the old pipes are kept in the ground and used as a guide for the new, bendable pipe.
As these pictures show, the new ones are pushed and pulled through the metal pipes to avoid long trenches. Just one hole at each end of the pipe run is needed. Meanwhile, a new electricity cable was installed below the crossroads: the marking round the pothole at the Wingfield Road/Parkfield Road junction fades as the hole gets worse; and the waterfall at the High Street/St Paul's Crescent junction continues to flow, despite investigation, excavation and refilling by Severn Trent.
The festival is joining in with the 300th anniversary of Capability Brown by showcasing some of the most stunning public and private gardens in England. There will also be free access to the gardens and houses at a selection of National Trust properties, as well as lesser known private and public secret green spaces and community gardening projects with fascinating stories to tell. Registration for organisers closes on 1st August with hundreds of green spaces already listed including the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust’s Shakespeare Centre, Allesley Park Walled Garden and Spon End Building Preservation Trust’s Weaver’s House and Garden. Loyd Grossman, Patron of Heritage Open Days, said: “Heritage Open Days is a great opportunity to showcase the hidden histories behind the green spaces in your area. From formal, prize-winning horticultural landscaping, to allotments, pub gardens and community planting projects, every gardener has a story to tell!” Clara Govier, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery said: “This is the chance for proud gardeners to take part in Heritage Open Days and an opportunity for visitors to enjoy some of the secret gardens in their own communities.” Organisers will need to register their green space with Heritage Open Days by 1st August 2016. By registering, all participants will be able to apply for a free marketing support pack and their event will be listed at www.heritageopendays. org.uk from mid-July. Clarity on property needed amidst Brexit uncertainty Jeremy Blackburn Head of UK Policy (RICS)
While Westminster, Holyrood, Cardiff Bay and Stormont will pour their energies into EU exit negotiation, Britain must maintain its focus on expanding domestic housing supply and delivering major infrastructure schemes. Europe night sky from space The Brexit vote is the start of a long and detailed process, which could take up to two years. The Prime Minister has announced his resignation but will stay on for three months to ensure stability. He also stated that the legislative agenda laid out in the Queen’s Speech will continue through Parliament. His successor will be responsible for negotiating the terms of the UK’s exit from the European Union under Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.
Until the UK completes the process of leaving the EU, the UK remains bound by all current EU law. Meanwhile, government will be preparing the new settlement we aim towards and will need to craft a negotiation strategy to achieve it. Ministers and political leaders from all parties must now focus on providing stability to encourage both institutional and private investment decisions. We have already heard from surveyors about the negative effects the referendum campaign had on property markets. The property sector requires stability, clarity and certainty. To deliver these conditions, and ensure confidence in markets, the “ship of state” needs a steady hand on the tiller during this momentous transition. In the short term, the Chancellor’s proposed “Brexit Budget” needs to reassure property markets, not worry them. A number of important themes emerged for
property during the referendum and these are where certainty and clarity are most needed:
Commercial Clarity on what trade and “pass-porting” relationship we are going to seek with the EU is key to the base of operations for financial services in London, and also in a wider sense for major industrial occupiers across the UK. Dragon's Den Business Event at Coleshill School
By Yvonne Holder The Coleshill School
Local businesses were invited to a Business Conference at The Coleshill School which consisted of a Dragon's Den style event. Students produced their own presentations and worked in teams presenting their bids. Local businesses generously pledged sponsorship of student-focussed items. Mr Smith-Childs, Headteacher commented “This
was an opportunity for local business to make long lasting links with the school and affect the life chance of hundreds of young people. It was a huge success and we would like to thank the generosity of all the local businesses who took part. We are so proud of our students who led the event they worked really hard putting together the presentations. This has enabled them to build their confidence as young leaders”. Steve Moore, Sertec said “I was impressed with the confidence of the young people. This has been a great experience for them and I have really enjoyed
visiting the school”. Katie Hale, Plott Creative said “It has been a fantastic event. I was so impressed with the genuine pride the students felt about the school and their confidence standing in front of so many business people”. The Coleshill School is rapidly expanding, with over 100 additional students joining each year; over 210 students will be joining in Year 7 this coming September. This event will help the school continue to make significant improvements to the students’ learning and outcomes.

The B46 Brexit Debate! On Wed 8th June, Business46 held their EU Breakfast Debate at the Coleshill & District Social Club. The newly renovated venue proved to be the perfect location for the lively debate.
Over 40 local business leaders and owners attended the event. The debate provided an exciting platform to hear fact based exchanges from both Vote Leave and Stronger In. Adam Farrell, Local Labour Councillor represented the Stronger In campaign and Andrew Garcarz, West Midlands Ukip Chairperson represented Vote Leave. The debate was chaired by public speaking and communications expert Lorna D Sheldon who did a fantastic job in controlling the speakers, and the audience, to ensure both sides had equal opportunities to present their case. There were tense exchanges on key topics of the economy, immigration and the NHS. Tough audience questions were met with wellstructured arguments from both sides. Andrew Garcarz based many facts around the impact of EU regulation on small businesses and stated that remaining in the EU is “like having your feet encased in concrete”. Adam Farrell supplied well-researched facts about the impact on local businesses and commented leaving the EU is “a huge risk to the local and UK economy”. All those who attended had the opportunity to vote before and after the debate, to see if anyone had changed their mind and the statistics are below;
Vote 1 (pre-debate) = Election turnout 71%, 42% Remain, 58% Leave Vote 2 (post-debate) Election turnout 83%, 48% Remain, 52% Leave No-one knows whether or not these statistics will represent the polls on the day but it was clear some of the 'undecideds' felt more informed and chose to vote in after hearing each side. Dominie Farrell of PS Consulting said "All the scaremongering by politicians had left me undecided on how to vote. However, this morning was the first time I understood the impact on a local level." Katie Hall of AP Designs said "This morning has provided a great opportunity to ask questions on issues that affect small businesses and the local economy." Those views were echoed by all attendees who commented how much they enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the impact on local issues. Business46 organises networking events for business owners and professionals throughout the B46 postcode.

The most common faults with Diesel cars By Phil Costello Spanners Automotive
This month I will be delving into common faults with modern diesel cars. Now I’m not expecting you to be able diagnosing your own vehicles after this, but hopefully you will be able to use this as an eye opener in why modern day diesels get these problems and will always have them. So the main parts of a diesel engine that allows it to be Euro friendly with less emissions are the EGR valve and DPF filter. So first off the EGR valve stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve. This component regulates the amount of exhaust gasses that are taken from
the exhaust manifold and reintroduced back into the intake side of the engine after being cooled. This is to aid in the combustion of all the fuel in the cylinder and not just let it go to waste out the exhaust. Now this is where the problems might start when a car is driven short journeys day to day. The hot exhaust gasses full of soot meets with the colder air that has a mixture of water vapour and oil. Together this makes what looks like a thick tar like paste. That paste will over time clog up the valve that is opening and closing to let the gasses through. Right this is where it starts to cause trouble. That blocked valve will now struggle to open and close. If it struggles to open then car will acknowledge the problem and will il-
luminate the yellow light. This will be read sometimes as enough of a fault so the car will no longer automatically regenerate the DPF filter and eventually clog up. If the valve is slightly open all the time because of the blockage then the car will see that air is leaking from the intake side of the engine and assume the turbo is not producing enough boost pressure and therefore faulty or it will assume a leak is somewhere from the turbo and engine. The car will sometimes when reading these faults, turn off the turbo and you will feel a lack of power. This is the car trying to stop you from damaging any more components. I hear a lot of customers come in and say the light has been on and off for a year but turning the engine

on and off had fixed it but now but I’m losing power and the light is constantly on. This can be because the EGR was slightly blocked up and turning the engine off and back on again made it forget the measurements it had to determine their was a problem. Basically it didn’t fix the problem, just slowly causing more. Right now we know what an EGR valve is and what it does we can get onto the next part of the car which saves up all the soot you usually see coming out of old diesels and stores it in a filter. This filter slowly builds up with soot and every so often the car heats up the filter and burns the soot and expels it as less harmful gasses. Now these are called DPF filters, which stand for Diesel Particulate Filter……..Filters. These are the
horribly expensive parts on the car which can cost up to £1200 each. A pressure sensor either side of the filter measures the flow of the exhaust gasses so to keep it in good order but if another part of the car has a problem like the turbo failing, injector faulty, EGR blocked, inlet flaps broken then it can do nothing but catch all the extra soot and oil and clog up. Once we have got to this stage, it’s inevitable a sizable bill is on its way. So the first thing you should do when a yellow light appears is go to your local garage and get it checked out. I know the car works fine and sometimes you just need to turn it off and back on again but it goes like this. EGR---DPF---Turbo----Dead Car. You have been warned people!!!!

with Jason Lowe I am finding it very hard coming to terms with the death of Muhammad Ali, not only because was he the ‘KING OF THE RING’ and an all-time must for any young and upcoming boxer or fighter.
I grew up in the 1970s and 1980s and Ali was the Mike Tyson we all heard about in the 1990s and 2000s. The life of Ali is more than documented on millions of pages and pieces of paper, endless miles of video film and billions of photos that were taken. However my contribution is this. In 1999, I met the 3 times World Heavyweight Boxing champion while I was working security at the Brit Awards in East London. It was the year after the band Chumbawomba caused an issue, when its member threw water over MP Johnny Prescott. I can remember being stood with Nigel Benn, Charlie Magri and Chris Eubanks and Barry McGuigan when people started talking that Ali was in the room, I remember a message coming through on the radio that Ali was about to enter the building. Without a second thought I left my post straight away and walked fast to get close to him. When I got close to him I was immediately struck by his presence and formidable size. His presence was hypnotic and magical. He was tall wearing a dark suite, and a black/white tie. Everyone in the room started shouting ALI, ALI, ALI,ALI, ALI. He was surrounded by minders and people were trying to shake his hand and get photos with him. In the 10 to 15 minutes he was there I never got to speak to him, but I was made up just being that close to him for at least 10 mins. Now in 2007 I became the boxing reporter for The Irish newspaper, The Harp. In the 9 years since I started I have managed to meet 11 of Muhammad’s opponents and all had the same replies about him. He was special. Smoking Joe Frazier was the first person I ever met who boxed Ali. Joe was in Birmingham and I got to interview him before the event that was being held at The Albany Hotel. Joe was on old legs and had slowed down by the time I got to speak to him. The first professional fighter to beat Ali, he told me, in the beginning he hated Ali. He was loud and brash. Always shouting and insulting. He insulted me and I took it personal. All I wanted to do was hit him. When we fought back in 1971 Ali was unbeaten in 31 fights. In that time he had beat Archie Moore, Cooper, Sonny Listen, Doug Jones, Floyd Patterson, George Chuvalo and some other good tough fighters. Later in years I forgave him for his insults and we always was respectable to each other when we met up. Sir Henry Cooper (RIP) was the second. He fought Ali twice. 1963 and 1965. Cooper was the second person to floor the champion in the ring. Cooper said Ali was more special than anyone else he knew in boxing. He was young, fast and loud, but he could talk the talk and walk the walk. Cooper did tell me he was and would be always angry about the glove tampering by Ali’s corner men. Cooper found out after the fight and it was confirmed years later, when Cooper floored Ali in the fight, Ali’s staff tampered with his glove so it could get replaced and give Ali time to recover. It worked and Cooper was later stopped when the referee called a halt to the fight. George Chuvalo, the Canadian Heavyweight champion had a fearsome reputation of a hitter how didn’t take no waffle from anyone. He boxed Ali in 1972 and took the fight right to the end, sadly loosing on points.
Brian London the British and Commonwealth Heavyweight champion had a second World title chance and In August 1996 he caught the train down to London’s Earl Court to fight Ali. However only lasting 3 rounds London was over powered, out boxed and stopped by KO. London will tell you he didn’t fight Ali he turned up and got paid. London who still lives in Blackpool is himself in bad health but says he was happy to be offered a fight with Ali. Karl Mildenberger, German European champion and also 2nd German European heavyweight champion Juergen Blin was both in the UK a few years back. I went to visit them and spoke to them about their time with him in the ring. When I spoke to both about Ali, both smiled and said they didn’t care now, they lost. Ali was something different. Karl said, you knew Ali was special and hard to beat. He fought Ali in 1966 Blin was very shy and quiet. He didn’t look like a fighter. He looked more like a driving instructor or a teacher. He boxed Ali in 1971 on Boxing Day. Blin never got a title but had been in the ring with some top names such as Ray Patterson, Jose Manuel Urtain, Joe Bugner and Ron Lyle. Joe Bugner took Ali the distance in both fights and Ali did state Joe was awkward and a pain. Bugner had beaten Henry Cooper and took his British, Commonwealth and European titles. Bugner always got a bad deal from England’s fight fans. Even more so when he got the win over Cooper. However he was tough and had been in with most of the top names in boxing. He had beat Brian London, Ray Patterson (Floyd’s brother) Chuck Wepner, Carl Gizzi, Juergin Blinn and Jack Bodell. Richard Dunne hailed from Yorkshire. A scaffolder by trade and by night a southpaw fighter. Turning pro in in 1969 by the time he met Ali he had won The British, Commonwealth and European titles. He had been beaten by Danny McAlinden in his second contest but had gone into the ring with Billy Aird, Bunny Johnson, Ray Patterson, Jimmy Young, Jose Urtain, Rocky Campbell and Joe Bugner. Ken Norton turned pro in 1967 and won his first 16 fights. A former Royal Marine in his youth and teens, Norton by the time he boxed pro had a fine chiselled body and could have a fight. He fought Ali in 1973 and beat him to become the NABF champion. Norton broke Ali’s jaw in the fight but lost the return bout 6 months later. Ernie Shavers was voted the heaviest and most deadly puncher in boxing altogether. He was renowned for knocking out nearly everyone who entered the ring with him. He beat Pat Duncan for the USA Nevada heavyweight title. Leon Spinks was the biggest surprise ever in the heavyweight division when after only having 7 pro fights, he beat Ali for the WBC & WBA World Heavyweight titles. Spinks was not even the underdog in the fight. It was claimed an unfair match up but Spinks got the win and Ali’s fans was left speechless. However Ali took him for granted and
7 months later, Ali regained the titles from him. Finally Larry Holmes was Ali’s second last fight. Holmes destroyed Ali in nearly every round and Ali retired on his stool. All of the above when I spoke with them held Ali in a high place. Not just in the ring but outside it also. All said he was fast for a heavyweight and could punch without you seeing it coming. Between his charms, vocal poetry, selling techniques and way he had with all people you could not hate him. All agreed Ali had great time for anyone. All said he loved children and always wanted to put a smile on everyone’s face. Always cracking jokes and laughs all round. He hated to hear people arguing and wanted to fix things for people. He loved seeing old faces he fought and talking about their fights in the past. Fighting Ali was a special place to be in. Getting into the ring with this special person was a dream come true for all. Larry Holmes for me loved Ali, He nearly wept when we spoke about Ali last year. He was vocal about their fight and how it went and ended. Holmes said he loved Ali and never wanted to fight him. He had been a sparring partner for him and knew Ali was on the decline. He was showing signs back then but they said his medicals showed the all clear. Holmes tried to go a different way but ended up getting blocked every way he went. In the end he had to fight Ali. Holmes told me for weeks after the fight he cried every day. Beating his Idol and friend had made him feel a bad person. Yea he was World Champion himself, but he hated the way he got it. Holmes said, he use to sit by himself crying and asking why he had took that fight. When he seen Ali again after the fight he hugged him and never wanted to let him go. Sadly like Holmes it is now time for all of us to let him go, but never forget him. What made Ali a peoples champion was his love by the people. The whole world needed Ali and got him.

Adam Harrison, Junior Cricket Manager explained “These opportunities we are offering will help to develop a unique cricket coaching programme which
is based on fun, rewarding, inclusive and differing activities. This builds on the success and growth of T20 cricket formats, which has seen huge success in engaging younger people and ensuring their longer term participation in the game. We hope we will attract new members to come watch our boys in action. “Our partnerships with local schools is demonstrating a demand for cricket and a need to offer cricketing opportunities to younger people, as well providing a clear pathway into club and recreational sport. Coleshill Town FC: Manager Paul Casey comments on the loss of 2 of his coaching staff I would like to put on record, to all the fans and players that have played for me, my gratitude in the work Matt Clifton and Gareth Palmer have done for me and the club. They both leave the club in a much better position than when they joined Coleshill Town FC . Matt Clifton joined the club over 3 years ago and became 1st team coach and has worked for free for the same amount of time that I have been in charge and has been a super star . He has never asked for anything from me and I have been tough on him at times when other people let me down but this young man leaves me to further his education at Birmingham City Ladies and Solihull Moors, where he will be doing all the video analysis of all their matches. I truly wish him well and my success while at Coleshill would not of happened but for his amazing attitude and energy. Gareth Palmer, my old friend, and Assistant Manager leaves Coleshill after a tough year of travelling the globe but will always be remembered for his book of banter that was Introduced the season we can 2nd. He recently got married and with his wife living in France I could not ask him to turn up on Tuesday nights when he will be globetrotting seeing his wife and son and working all over the UK. He is, and will always be, a true friend of mine and I do look forward to him popping in when he is back in Birmingham. Both these gentleman will be missed by myself but as they say in the movies the show must go on so I will making announcements of a new Coleshill Management team that will be working with myself and the NEW under 21`s staff for the coming season. Regards Paul Casey
