Coleshill Town re-write history books Coleshill travelled to Eastern Counties League outfit Gorleston in confident mood following three straight wins but the home team were the form side, undefeated in 18 league games.

The first 45 minutes flew by as two evenly matched sides went toe to toe in a very entertaining game. Coleshill broke quickly from a Gorleston corner Reece Leek finding Rob Evans whose shot was well saved by the impressive home keeper Taurean Molloy. The home side had better possession but Coleshill looked really dangerous on the break with the pace of Leek and Jordan Nadat. McKay sent a low free kick along the 6 yard line which only needed a touch then Garrod's cross was even closer as that went along the goal line but again there was no-one about to convert the chance. Molloy saved from Tom Weale just before Coleshill took the lead on 36 minutes. The hard working Jordan Nadat held the ball up well

but there looked no danger until Dean Rathbone took a punt and found the net from 25 yards. Molloy saved from Nadat, Rathbone's goalbound shot was deflected for a corner and defender Oldham miss-kicked a clearance which came off the post as the Colemen finished the half on top. Coleshill continued where they left off with Molloy out quickly at the feet of Reece Leek and then saved from Jordan Nadat despite being surrounded by three defenders. Town were now so dominant that the home side were reduced to shots from distance with keeper Paul Hathaway having a quiet afternoon. Taylor shot wide from just inside the half way mark then Garrod shot wide when well set up by Cockrill but on 61 minutes Coleshill doubled their lead. Tom Weale sent Reece Leek down the right wing and his pinpoint cross was tapped home by Jordan Nadat. Paul Hathaway saved at the feet of Ingram and then Molloy saved yet again from Nadat. Another

Time was running out and Gorleston were trying desperately to get something from the game but were getting no change from a solid defensive display. In injury time the home side forced a corner and had eleven men in Coleshill's half. The corner was cleared quickly to Jordan Nadat who rolled the ball into an empty net from fully 40 yards. A near perfect display to nullify a team that were riding a crest of a wave in their own league. Previous manager Paul Casey broke all sorts of records in his four years at Coleshill but new boss Simon Lyons has broke one already, last 16 of the FA Vase for the very first time when we face East Sussex side Crowborough away from home on 28th January. HS2 Phase 2b, Community Funds and Other News

In this article Water Orton Borough Councillor Dave Reilly explains the local impact of the announcement of HS2 Phase 2b and looks at HS2s plans for local community funds. By David Reilly The Phase 2b line, or Eastern Leg as it is now being called, will start at a set of points at Curdworth where it will split from the Phase 1 line.

It will run alongside the M42 through Bodymoor Heath, Kingsbury Water Park, along the Tamworth side of Kingsbury and straight through the motorway services at Junction 10 of the M42 at Tamworth, from where it will continue onwards to Leeds. Current plans are that it will open in 2033 and will cut over an hour off the current train journey time to Leeds reducing it from 1hour 58 minutes to 49 minutes. Quite reasonably one might ask why Leeds or indeed Manchester for Phase 1. The answer is that HS2 amongst other things is about opening up the ‘Northern Powerhouse’ economy that is so much a feature of our country’s North / South divide in terms of wealth and economic prosperity. Plans are afoot to connect the HS2 track at Leeds to the existing East Coast Mainline and this will take high speed trains onward to Newcastle. In the same fashion the HS2 Phase 1 to Manchester will from a points junction at Crewe continue up to Scotland on the existing mainline network. As with Phase 1 HS2 Phase 2b will be built under the authority of an Act of Parliament. This means that like Phase 1 it will override all existing legislation such as the Green Belt and planning laws. There will be another petitioning period where anyone can petition both the House of Commons and the House of Lords as the Bill passed through both Houses on its way to receiving Royal Assent and becoming Statute at the end of 2019. If you would like help to petition against the proposals then please contact me and I will gladly explain the process and help you along the way. Both North Warwickshire Borough Council and Warwickshire County Council will be petitioning in support of local interests. So what of the local detail? Well, none of it is good news I’m afraid. The line will follow the M42 as it passes through Kingsbury Water Park where plans have been amended to ensure it will run on a single continuous viaduct to ensure that it has less of an impact on the wa-

tercourse, additionally, the track will be lowered by 4 meters to make it less visible. Warwickshire County Council is actively seeking the best mitigation and local offsetting for this disturbance. The Phase 2b announcement confirms the construction of the Curdworth points junction between Faraday Avenue and Dunton Hall motorway island, which with 8 HS2 rail tracks running side by side will be the widest section of HS2 track anywhere in the country. The announcement also confirms that we will be facing 16 years of HS2 construction across our communities as the Kingsbury Road HS2 Railhead will now have an operational life up to and including 2033. This will mean that the A4097, A446 and Dunton Hall Junction 9 of the M42 will continue to be key road transport routes for all HS2 construction traffic. Is it really a case of no positive news? Mostly yes I’m afraid. The crumbs of positive news are that last month HS2 publicly announced that Warwickshire will get a share of £15 million, along with Staffordshire and Buckinghamshire, as part of the HS2 Community and Environment Fund and the Business and Local Economy Fund. Community groups will be able to bid for grants which are expected to be rolled out when construction starts in 2017. We must ensure that our local communities are ready to make our case and bid for as much as we can get from this pot. If you have any ideas or suggestions then please let me know and I will work with the local HS2 Action Groups and Parish Councils to write and champion our bids. Currently there are no rules about what can be bid for so get your thinking caps on. The Coleshill Neighbourhood plan sets out an excellent proposal for additional visual mitigation woodland tree planting along the route of the line as it runs along the line of the A446, and Water Orton HS2 Action Group are considering options to enhance visual mitigation and secure land in perpetuity for community benefit. In addition, I am pleased to report that local parishes are scoping options to develop a joint bid to enhance local cycle routes and footpaths that could connect our towns and villages directly to Kingsbury Water Park. On this theme when I met with HS2 in October they committed to considering whether a footpath and cycle route could be

constructed along side the route of the Phase 2b line to connect Kingsbury Water Park to the new National Forest that is now being planted at Junction 11 of the M42 near Measham. In other HS2 news an interesting proposal is being considered by Birmingham Airport to expand the planned HS2 Interchange Station that will be built next to Melbicks into a shared HS2 / Airport terminal. This would mean that travellers into the terminal building could, security restrictions permitting, have a seamless single ticket journey from a local train station, for example Coleshill Parkway, all the way to some exotic destination across the world; I quite look forward to asking for a return to JFK New York at Coleshill ticket office! Clearly the advantage for the Airport would be that it would free up more space on the current airport site for a far larger apron - the area where airplanes are parked for boarding, unloading and refuelling. That said, in local terms especially across Curdworth, Water Orton and Lea Marston the prospect of more aircraft movements in the sky above us is not a welcome prospect. A last snippet of news is that plans to make the single lane section of the A446 between Marsh Lane and Watton Lane, Water Orton into dual carriageway are back in discussion. While it's very early days an organisation called Midlands Connect is scoping options for local road and rail improvements during the coming five to ten years that will enhance access to the local motorway network and HS2 stations. So, in closing this article please excuse me while I will make a repeat request for you to read and engage with the consultation process on the Borough Councils ‘North Warwickshire Local Plan’. As you will expect HS2 plans feature in the document which can be found on the Borough Council website in the ‘Planning’ section on the home page. The Local Plan is an important document for your community as it sets out which areas in the borough will be allocated for sustainable housing, commercial development and infrastructure improvements between 2016 and 2031. Public consultation on these proposals runs until Friday 31st March 2017, after which, once adopted by the borough council, the Plan will become the core planning resource against which the Borough Council will make all development decisions for the next decade. So, if you have a view then now is most definitely the time to have your say. BETWEEN 12th & 14th December 2016 a factually incorrect and uncorroberated article was posted on the Coleshill Post website.

The rising cost to the Borough Council of providing replacement bins, free of charge, to North Warwickshire residents has prompted the Council to introduce a £35 charge.

During 2016, there was a reported rise of 40% in the numbers of replacement bins supplied. Up until September, a total of 2,208 bins were delivered to properties - two thirds of these were replacements for damaged bins and a third replaced ones reported missing. A further £31,000 was spent in 2015/16 to supply bins to developers for new properties, not all of which was recouped. Added to this, the bins are delivered by the Street Cleaning crews and their increased work load has meant less time on litter clearance in the Borough. At it's December meeting the Council agreed on a £35 charge for a replacement bin, which includes storage and delivery costs. Any repairs will be done at no charge and food waste caddies and paper and card inserts will still be replaced for free. If the bin is damaged by the Borough Council or is under two years old, it will also be replaced at no cost to the resident. Councillor Les Smith, Chair of the Community and Environment Board said: “Other authorities such as Warwick and Stratford have already introduced charges and evidence shows that requests for replacement bins drop considerably. If we see a 50% drop in requests, this could save us over £75,000 a year from the hard pressed Refuse and Recycling budget. We will also be working harder to ensure that developers take responsibility for supplying bins to new properties.“ He added: “ We urge our residents to look after their bins too. Please don’t use them to store heavy items or put soil, hot ash or chemicals in them, which are guaranteed to damage the bins. Another tip is to label your bin clearly with your property number or name so that you and our Streetscape Teams can easily identify it. “ For more information, go to the website www.northwarks.gov.uk/bins

It’s just to amuse the family, neighbours and passers-by. The materials he uses are junk from his garage – stuff most people throw into a skip – glued and screwed together, painted and garlanded with fairy lights. Christmas 2016 brought this 12-foot-tall giraffe with reindeer antlers and a perplexed Santa wondering how he was going to get the bridle on what some christened a girafdeer. Brian’s main concern was that the willowy creation might blow over but thanks to a few strategically placed guy ropes, the girafdeer easily withstood Storm Barbara. Sadly it did not withstand the vandal who left his footprints on the frosted lawn on the evening of 2nd January.

News Ln Local www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk Piles of dumped rubbish discovered in the North Warwickshire countryside have cost Mr Rayde Khunti of Ansley Road, Nuneaton a £1,059 fine for flytipping. A North Warwickshire resident spotted a huge amount of rubbish strewn across the road on Daw Mill Lane near Arley. She had to stop to clear some of it, so she could continue driving safely and then reported the incident to the Borough Council. She returned to the spot to take photos of the rubbish and later saw a fire engine at the scene, as the rubbish had been set on fire. A member of the Borough Council’s Streetscape Team also investigated the rubbish and the contents were traced back to Mr Rayde Khunti of RK Stores, Ansley Road, Nuneaton. In a second incident, another vigilant member of the public found flytipped rubbish on Bun Lane, Fillongley. She took photos and reported the flytipping to the Borough Council. When the Streetscape Team later visited the scene, the rubbish was again traced back to Mr Khunti. During an interview under caution at the Bor-

ough Council, Mr Khunti maintained that he had paid ‘ £1,000’ to someone called ‘ Adam’ who he had found in the ‘Yellow Pages.’ He also admitted he had not checked for a waste carrier’s licence and neither had he any receipts for the work carried out. Steve Maxey, Assistant Chief Executive and Solicitor to the Council said: “ We have done many similar prosecutions this year and hope that through our work, the message is starting to get through. Everyone must check that people offering to get rid of your household rubbish have a legitimate ‘waste carrier’s licence’ which is issued through the Environment Agency. That rubbish is your responsibility – known as a ‘duty of care’ – so if the rubbish is found flytipped, it’s you who will end up footing the bill. “ Mr Maxey added: “ We have agreed to increase our surveillance on fly-tipping with extra CCTV cameras and staff time to investigate cases. A Government announcement to build 14 new garden villages across the country has led to calls from Labour Councillors in North Warwickshire for the local Borough Council to seriously consider the option to build their own ‘garden village’. Announcing the policy, Conserative Minister Gavin Barwell MP said “Garden towns and villages have enormous potential to deliver the homes that communities need.” Labour Group Leader, Cllr Adam Farrell said; “It’s not often I issue a statement backing a Conservative Government policy but on this occasion the Conservative Minister is right. North Warwickshire has to build a minimum of 9070 new homes over the next 15 years. The Conservative Government’s policy means we have no choice in this matter. “The Borough Council can however set out the land it wants homes built on. The options are very simple. You can build new homes in existing

towns and villages or you can build a new village. “The first option comes with no guarantee of new infrastructure, places pressure on existing infrastructure and public services and just as importantly, it does not generate the same economic benefits to a local area as building a new village. “A new village would come with new infrastructure, new services and would provide a huge boost to the local economy. “I again call on the Conservative Borough Council to listen to the views of local people. Hundreds of locals marched the build route in Dordon and Polesworth today to express their opposition to the plan. The Council should withdraw their damaging plan to build thousands of homes in Atherstone, Dordon, Polesworth and Ansley and instead go back to the drawing board to explore a new garden town or village.” The Conservatives we're asked for a comment but declined.

Colin Bryan, son of founder at Drayton Manor Park receives OBE

The determination demonstrated by Mr Bryan, not only for his involvement in the tourist attraction his parents founded in post-war Britain, but also as a philanthropist, is indicative of his passion and the drive he has for the park, employees and the people it serves. Colin comments: “My parents opened the park in 1950 and I have been working there since I was a young boy, when my first job was helping them clear the rubble with my miniature wheelbarrow. I have worked in nearly every department over the years and qualified as a Chef to really understand what makes the park and catering companies what they are today. It is in my blood so I feel very honoured to receive this OBE. I still love watching our guests have fun, enjoying themselves, knowing I have played a part in that.” Back in 1949, Mr and Mrs George and Vera Bryan OBE purchased a derelict property together with 80 acres of land near Tamworth, Staffordshire. Not long

after, they set about transforming the site, which had once been the home of Sir Robert Peel, into a leisure park that would be affordable, reachable and open to all. Today, in its 66th year, Drayton Manor is one of the top five theme parks in the UK. Over the years, Colin has been an inspiration to those around him for his support with numerous local charities and community initiatives, including his involvement with the park’s main charity, of which he is a Patron, KidsOut. KidsOut is a national charity providing fun and happiness for young people living in difficult and challenging circumstances. Here he continues the work his father began in 1989 with Rotary. It holds a special place for him being able to provide an annual fun day out for over 5,000 disadvantaged, disabled and special needs children. Other charities include the RNLI, for which his late mother was hugely involved, as well as the Midlands Air Ambulance, JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), St Giles Hospice, National Autistic Society, Alzheimer’s Research UK, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Tamworth Round Table and Tamworth Rotary to name a few. Colin concluded: “This park truly is a family affair. It began with my parent’s passion to create somewhere magical for people to visit after the war. It is our whole family’s life works and I couldn’t be more proud.”

Have your say! Dear editor, I can tell David Reilly EXACTLY what HS2 will mean for us. YEARS of disruption,noise and dust ,while it is being built, especially if HS2 Ltd close Gilson Road, as they say they will and don't build an extra road for construction traffic around the back of Gypsy Lane , as promised. Gridlock and chaos!! And for what ? An empty train thundering past every 5 minutes because the cost of a ticket will be prohibitive for most people. And HOW will this help commuters? They will have to travel to Bickenhill to get on it to Birmingham , no use to people in WaterOrton, Coventry, Tamworth, Nuneaton etc. All this for the unimaginable cost of £100 BILLION, (all other hi speed projects have ended up costing 5 times the original estimate) To put that in perspective ,that is over £12 for every person on

the planet! HS1 has only achieved half predicted passenger figures . In fact , passenger numbers haven't risen since 1995 , the rail service has just deteriorated. Money needs to be spent on that NOW ,not on a train that MAY be running in 2025. Suggesting that there will be thousands of jobs and that house prices may rise does not represent value for money The Public Accounts Committee has questioned this many times. We all know that the M6 Toll is a waste of space...hasn't helped congestion on the M6 at all.Unfortunately ,HS2 will be exactly the same. A massive White Elephant that the government hasn't the guts to cancel Councillor Reilly has been suckered into the party line , I just wish I could be around in 20 years to say "I told you so "

For the last 13 years a group and Nuneaton. of volunteers has worked Often overshadowed by the tirelessly to promote the famous landmarks in the southbeautiful and fascinating ern part of the county, the north north of Warwickshire, is championed by the Northern which is centred around Warwickshire Tourism (NWT), the market towns of Ather- which was formed in 2004. Warwickshire the group assists local businesses and tourism organisations, helping them thrive and grow by drawing more visitors to the area. Members, who pay an annual fee of £60 to have their details on the NWT website and in an acclaimed tourism guide, include shops, restaurants, attractions and accommodation suppliers. During 2017 NWT, led by a team of unpaid volunteers drawn from the membership, is moving up a gear. The aim is to build on past successes and draw even more visitors to north Warwickshire. NWT plans to help members continue to raise their profiles and increase revenues, benefiting both individual organisations and the area as a whole. However this can only be achieved if North Warwickshire Tourism increases its membership levels. More members will enable the group to boost promotional activities. It will also make it easier for potential visitors to find what they need on the NWT website or in the visitor guide, as they become more comprehensive. Membership is open to all individuals or organisations working in north Warwickshire’s tourism industry and the application form can be found at visitnorthernwarwickshire.com NWT is also currently recruiting for its first paid role – a part time, home based Administrator/ Marketeer, who will support the drive to recruit new members and promote the north of Warwickshire. WI Wi Curdworth www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk The end of October saw several of our members and guests, along with hundreds of other WI members from all over Warwickshire, at Wroxall Abbey for a special lunch with the very entertaining and charming guest speaker Michael Portillo.

On a more serious note our AGM, held in early November and with Lynne Stubbings officiating, enabled us to vote in a new Committee and to reinstate Laura Heeley as our President for a second year. Having served 5 years on Committee Ann Howgate, Sheena Brechin, Barbara Langford and Sandra Bayliss were obliged to stand down but were the recipients of beautiful bouquets and grateful thanks for all their considerable efforts done on our behalf. These formalities were then followed by a cheese and

wine supper. Our December meeting was the Christmas Party when all members bring a selection of delicious party foods; it’s a constant surprise that we always seem to get the balance right between the savouries and the sweets. We were then entertained with a General Knowledge Christmas Bingo game and the hilarious Pop-Up Panto “Cinderella”, which was helped along considerably by very bad acting, poor props and much enthusiastic audience participation. Our entry into the Curdworth Christmas Tree Festival, entitled “Votes For Women”, looked very pretty in the Suffragette colours of emerald green, amethyst and pearl thanks to the skills of Helen Smith and Eileen Edwards. The charity “Operation Christmas Child” was once again very generously supported and 110 boxes were kindly delivered by Kate Burwell and Liz Tranter to the local sorting depot. This month our

Caribbean Cranachan By Jeanette James (Upper Crust)

One of my favourite, cranachan is a classic Scots pudding, but this one has a Caribbean twist as it's rum instead of whisky You will need 25g of porridge oats 1 small ripe banana 1/2 pint double cream 3tbsp white rum 6 tbsp clear honey, plus extra to drizzle 200g of raspberries First toast your oats in a dry frying pan, but careful don't burn them! Transfer to a plate to cool and then peel and slice the banana. Whip the cream to soft peaks and then gently fold in the rum, honey, oats, raspberries and banana but keep back a few raspberries for decoration. Spoon your Cranachan into 8 dessert dishes pop on the top the reserved raspberries and oats and drizzle with honey. Enjoy !!!!!!

Rambling and Luncheon Group stayed very close to home by walking round the periphery of the village before heading off for a very enjoyable lunch at “The Beehive Inn”. The next social event will be the annual Group “Carols by Candlelight” Service at St. Nicholas Church, Curdworth, bringing together the three W.I.’s from Coleshill, Wishaw and Curdworth, and giving us the opportunity to “catch up” with each other over mulled wine and mince pies. On reflection, we do seem to do a lot of eating and drinking when we get together but, hey….. who’s complaining? If you feel that we might be the W.I. for you then please come along and join us on the first Thursday in the month (not January….we are out at our annual dinner!) at 7.30pm or ring 01675-470079 for more information. Coleshill members ran the WI tombola stall in the Town Hall at the turning on of the Christmas lights ceremony. At our December meeting the following week we enjoyed a visit from ‘Father Christmas’ in mufti, Pat Saunders from Stretton-on-Dunsmore near Coventry, who for nearly 40 years has taken the role, entertaining hundreds of children each Christmas. After his much-loved loved wife died several years ago, Pat began giving talks on life as Father Christmas, ‘The View from the Other Side of the Beard’, with the proceeds going to Myton Hospice where his wife was cared for during her final illness. Pat originally hoped to be an actor but was told he was “too big for the scenery” so instead he took on the mantle of Father Christmas in a splendid costume his wife made for him. He has proved a great hit with youngsters, even giving them advice, telling them that Father Christmas won’t deliver presents if they don’t tidy their bedrooms. Members enjoyed festive snacks

and mulled wine then played a riotous game of indoor curling, The meeting finished with carol singing, accompanied by Mavis Gordon on the piano. Several members attended the Group Carol Service at Curdworth Church, shared with the Wishaw and Curdworth WIs. Former President Christine Jones read the third lesson from Matthew. New President Elaine Partridge delivered a comic parody, “The Puppies’ Night Before Christmas” which began: “'Twas the night before Christmas And all through the house The puppies were squeaking An old rubber mouse The wreath which had cheerfully Been hung on the door Was scattered in pieces All over the floor...” Everyone enjoyed mince pies and mulled wine at the get-together in the church hall afterwards. At the next meeting on January 10th at the Town Hall, the talk will be on old-fashioned entertainments including music hall and conjuring. Visitors welcome as always.

First court prosecution of 2017 as ‘puppy farm’ owner is fined over £900

A Bodymoor Heath man, Mr Tufal Ahmed, has been fined £944.88 for illegally selling on puppies without a Pet Shop licence.

The alarm was first raised with the Borough Council’s Environmental Health team by a Borough Councillor and later by the County Council’s Trading Standards department, which had received a complaint. A couple had contacted Mr Ahmed about buying an English bull dog puppy, which he had advertised as fully vaccinated, micro-chipped, Kennel Club registered and vet checked. On arrival, the pup appeared to be caged alone, without its parents and with no other dogs present. After paying £1,275.00 by bank transfer, the couple expected to receive the official Kennel Club papers, which never arrived. Mr Ahmed also told the couple that the dog had not been vaccinated and their vet revealed that not only did the pup have a hernia but she had also been operated on previously. When interviewed under caution at the Bor-

ough Council, Mr Ahmed revealed that he had re-homed and sold between 15 and 20 puppies in 2016, and, in some cases, had been paid for doing so. He did not have a Pet Shop licence, admitted that some of the dogs were poorly and unvaccinated and also kept no records of where the dogs had come from or who they had been sold to. Assistant Chief Executive and Solicitor to the Council, Steve Maxey said: “This was a successful prosecution which highlights the importance of having the correct licence, approved by the Borough Council – whether you own a pet shop or are breeding dogs. Step up to Walk for Parkinson’s in the West Midlands in 2017 People across the West Midlands looking for a New Year’s resolution are being invited to join Parkinson’s UK in theirs.

Walk for Parkinson’s launches on the 11 January and the charity has resolved to make it their biggest series yet. They want to recruit as many walkers as possible for the events in the West Midlands at Stafford (14 May) and Packwood House in Warwickshire (10 September). Each walk offers a range of distances and terrains, so there is something to suit everyone from those looking for a leisurely stroll to keen walkers who prefer a bigger challenge. Dave Clark, Sky Sports presenter and keen supporter of Parkinson’s UK is the Champion of Walking for Parkinson’s UK, as since being diagnosed with Parkinson’s himself in 2011 at the age of 44, Dave has found that walking is a fantastic way to keep fit. A local IT Company was invited by Birmingham Children’s Hospital to decorate their operating theatre for the festive season. ACUTEC raised over £500 for the hospital in the summer through fundraising activities and were delighted to be invited back by the hospital to spread some festive cheer

for the children. The theatre that the team decorated will be the only one in operation over Christmas, with only the most critical patients being admitted. ACUTEC’s Managing Director, Chris Roche said: ‘The children in the operating theatre this Christmas will be the ones in desperate need of some festive cheer so it’s brilliant that we are able to make this scary

time a little brighter for them.’ The Microsoft Gold Partner and Security Specialist, based in the Midlands, donated £250 worth of decorations and spent a morning with Ryan from the hospital’s fundraising team putting up stars and snowflakes as well as bedecking the corridor with fairy lights. The hospital has adopted a star theme for their decorations this year

There is so many differing pieces of information available to us. What advice do we take? What method or regime is best? It is forgiving to understand why many people feel confused and helpless, often resorting to an extreme all or nothing approach. Which often makes the situation worse. I will tell you right from the start it doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Here’s how to start making the greatest impact on your health, weight and general fitness. Firstly, know that your body doesn’t want to wreak havoc and destroy itself. It only wants to function however best it can. Give it too little energy to function and it will have con-

sequences, give it too much energy it will also have consequences. So, we first need to recognize your sweet spot for energy. This refer to calories and how many you consume. Weight loss or gain on a simplistic scale is energy in versus energy out. Food (k/cal) being energy. So along as you consume less energy (food) than you expend (daily function and exercise) you will always lose weight. Getting consistent with your food intake and energy output is the first point of call. No need to get over complicated which many people do from the start. My third recommendation is to only introduce one habit or change per week. Allowing you to perfect each step that week before adding another. Far too often people go from one lifestyle to a complete change in 24 hours. To many changes at once isn’t likely to succeed or be sustainable. Don’t panic, be patient and trust yourself, this builds confidence and positive outcomes. One habit could be to include vegetables with each meal, or attending a fitness class 2/3 times per week, how about making sure you get 6 – 8 hours sleep, or getting consistent with your food consumption. Consistency refers to what is sustainable to you not others. If you can’t sustain it, then it won’t be consistent. January is the peak time for people ditching the nine to five and looking to start their own business in Coventry and Warwickshire – and 2017 is set to be no exception. The start-up support team at the Coventry and Warwickshire Cham-

ber of Commerce are anticipating a rush of calls in the New Year as people look to follow their dream of being their own boss. The Chamber offers a range of help from workshops to one-to-one mentoring and, according to Operations Manager Keely Hancox, the New Year offers individuals a chance to

reflect. She said: “At Christmas and New Year, people not only take the time to celebrate but they think about what they want to do long term and, for many, it means setting up their own business. “So January tends to be a busy time with people contacting us after

Christmas looking for help and support. “I would certainly advise that they do speak to us because getting the right advice from the outset can be a huge benefit to people as there are many aspects of starting a company that they don’t consider. “For some, just making the call into the Chamber and hearing that support is available can give them the confidence to take the next step. In some instances, it may work the other way. They may see that they are not quite ready because it’s important to understand that the rewards that come with starting a business also take lots of hard work and can mean unsociable hours, at times.” Over the past 12 months, the Chamber has supported more than 120 people in starting their own business – from a photography company to an independent café. Keely said there a several pointers to consider. She said: “The starting point is whether you are interested in or have certain expertise that would make a good business. If you know the subject, it’s a great place to start. “Then, you have to look at whether there is a gap in the market – is

anyone else doing it? If they are, how can you do it differently or better? “Also, you have to think about what you want from the business – is it a lifestyle choice or do you want to grow it, take on staff and become bigger than just you? “Finally, and this is key, what other expertise do you need? You might be brilliant at what you do but there is so much more to running a business than that. You have to consider everything from finance to marketing if you want to make it a success. “Those questions might be new to you but they are the questions that our team have asked and answered hundreds of times so we’d urge anyone thinking of starting a business to get in touch as soon as possible.” This project is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund, forming part of the Coventry & Warwickshire Business Support Programme. Following Brexit there will be no structural or social funds to address infrastructure or job creation so I suggested that these funds could be invested in bringing our manufacturing infrastructure up to the level we need it to be. At the moment 80% of our exports are services: this is not sustainable. We have to address our trade deficit, which in June, was £5.1 billion. To be a successful well-balanced economy we have to make things and sell them across the world. British manufacturers made more cars in 2015 than any year since 2005 when 1,595,697 vehicles were produced, according to figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders. 77.3% of total car production was for export. However, as the British car industry is foreign owned, and the importing and exporting of component parts confuses rather than clarifies what is actually home-made, I hope that the Minister of State for Exiting the European Union can make the

case to invest more in the infrastructure all our manufacturers need to outperform their competitors. I a world where other governments are actively investing in the industries, we are being prevented from further success. If Trump’s words come true, that the US is waiting to steal UK trade opportunities with the EU and around the globe, our manufacturing sector will never recover and the 600,000 industry jobs IPPR has suggested that we will lose by 2030, will happen unopposed. Tell me about other major strategic issues facing manufacturing? The EEF published a report towards the end of 2016 on the 4th Industrial revolution – sometimes called Industry 4.0. What this is really about is how manufacturers can use new technology to help their customers exceed the expectations of their customers. It is how technology helps manufacturers move beyond simply producing things to providing value added services to customers in collaboration with other manufacturers. According to

the EEF it is about how we align three things: machines and technologies collecting, sharing and acting on data between themselves; the capture of data on everything and real time analysis of that data by machines and systems; having a resilient network to link everything up. Manufacturers see the benefits as providing a quicker route to innovation and an enabler of greater ambition. It is just what we need to be able to regain the Midlands’ position as the premier region globally for manufacturing and remanufacturing. We need business leadership to secure the political support for infrastructure and incentives to underpin such a step change. At a time when Ministers are preoccupied with Brexit we do really need to create a compelling business plan that aligns with initiatives such as Smart Cities. This is an activity with which I am currently involved. Are there any good examples of support for manufacturing locally? I can give you two examples of what is avail-

A Midlands based IT Company was invited by the Ahead Partnership to get involved with their Women in Industry day at Swanshurst School in Billesley in Birmingham. Microsoft Gold Partner ACUTEC were delighted to participate in the event where women in business and industry gathered together to discuss their careers and experiences at the all girls’ school. Marketing Executive Amy Staniszewski, 24, spent the day with Years 8 and 9 pupils discussing her career progression and education. The school had arranged the day to give the pupils the opportunity to learn about possible career paths and options before choosing their GCSE subjects. Amy commented: ‘It’s been great to be a part of the Women in Industry day. The pupils’ concerns were like mine at that age so I really hope that I have been able to answer some of their questions and give them more

confidence when it comes to choosing their options.’ The Ahead Partnership is a non-profit organisation dedicated to connecting businesses and communities together to create social and economic change. The Women in Industry day was part of their Make the Grade programme in which young people are helped by professionals from businesses like ACUTEC to prepare them for the world of work. At the event, groups of pupils would rotate between tables having 15 minute sessions with the visitors to the school. The pupils would ask questions such as why they chose the career that they did, who inspires them and if they had always planned to have the career they have now. While the sessions were in place for Years 8 and 9, Sixth Form students also came along to ask for advice and guidance in the next stages of their education. Chris Roche, Managing Director of ACUTEC said: ‘I’m so glad that ACUTEC can get involved in a scheme like this. Being able to empower young people to see their full potential is a fantastic thing to be a part of.’

They provide components to the booming auto industry and we even have a robotics company that can help us with automation. ABB has invested significantly in its manufacturing facility in Coleshill, UK, over the last 18 months. As part of its investment strategy, ABB has focused on production, including new CNC machinery, and further corrugation and moulding technology for its cable protection product ranges. I've decided to dedicate this edition to the names in boxing who I feel have contributed not just to the sport but also to those who look to them for guidance. A round up of who has excelled more than normal and got noticed, for me more than others. Walsall boxer Martin Gethin dreamed of becoming a World Champion and when things looked like they was miles away from him, he surprised everyone when he, as the underdog, stepped into the ring against John Wayne Hubbert at Wembley Area and stopped him by TKO. Getting, who accepted the challenge within two weeks of the Fight Night traveled to London with nothing and came back the IBF International Super Lightweight Champion. He added this to his already collection of British, vacant IBF International Lightweight and English belts. Gethin for me gave a smashing fight and made his fight worth watching over and over again.

Mixing the amateurs with the pros is working for Eastside and making it a very impressive positive club that will grow this year to massive heights even more.

This section I have to give to 2 boxers: Craig Cunningham & Sean Davis. It's a joint win because the outcomes was not just thrilling, but also fantastic to watch. Eastside Southpaw's Middleweight icon Craig Cunningham had a busy year in 2016 with fights against both Ryan Aston & Jason Welborn. Craig showed massive heart in both fights and his fight against Aston was the more brutal and noticed for the tuff Rocky type out come look it had. When Cunningham was matched against former Olympian and unbeaten pro Anthony Agogo nobody really gave Cunningham a chance. Sat at ringside from the bell starting round 1, Cunningham was like a Formula 1 driver slipping and moving

to gain pole position. He moved fast and in round and he showed Agogo just how hard he can punch. A few rounds later Agogo had enough and motioned to the referee he was finished giving Cunningham the WBC International Middleweight Title. Craig now looks set to fight Tommy Langford after Tommy beat Sam Sheedy for the British Title last November. Hockley's Unbeaten Super Bantamweight fighter Sean Davis is one of the most exciting fighters I have seen in a while and my second choice. Sean boxed amateur for St Francis, but as a pro he has now had 11 fights. Boxing on the Eggington v Gavin undercard Davis originally was meant to fight Gamal Yafai, but Gamal pulled out. Lucky Paul Economides from Wales came in to save the day. With 20 wins 6 losses. He fought Davis tooth and nail. However Davis gave the performance of his life so far. Davis pulled out every hammer and tool from his arsenal and never let up going toe to toe every round with Economides. It was a battle every round but Davis showed he wanted it more each time the bell rang. For me his fight was one of 2016 fights of the year all round, not just for The Midlands. Because of his fantastic win and style of boxing, he fights Josh Kennedy at Londons York Hall soon for the English Title. Kennedy has only had 8 fights but is a hard puncher with a longer arm range that Davis. This will be a hard fight for Sean and all he needs to do is work his power punching range. If you want a good scrap to get your new year going then this fight don't miss it.

Let's see. Jordan Lynch has only had 1 professional fight, it was in October just and he beat Grzegorz Semik on Top promotions show held at the Aston Villa Football Club. Jordan is dedicated to training and getting things done correctly. He as a background with the white collar trade so moving the game up, he is showing good thinking and good positive training. Defoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; going to be watching him this year.

COMMITMENT TO A NEW WAVE OF BOXING- WBC Women's Boxing Club, can be seen as a bias choice because of my involvement. However winning two awards in two years by BOX-NATION & The Birmingham Sports Awards with 27 World Boxing Champions offering support by video links and most recently been supported by the Birmingham's Mail newspaper, the purpose behind the club is to offer females everything in boxing their male counterparts enjoy. Old Salts Combined under 14s/13s Old salts combined under 13s/14s got their official fixture list off to a tremendous start with three wins out if three against Warley RFC, Coalville RFC and Redditch RFC. Great teamwork saw the team run in a total of 35 tries in the three gam. The lads travelled over to Warley. They came away with a well earned 55-20 victory. The team put together a very well worked performance as a team. Each and every player helped earn the victory. Excellent support play saw the team run in 11 tries. In addition the Salts pack were faultless. Their efforts perhaps helps to define the meaning of teamwork. Rarely did they lose out to their opponents pack who were perhaps 25% heavier. The Salts pack we just too strong and organised for their opponents. The lads followed this victory up with their first home game of the season against Coalville RFC. Once again the pack out-scrummed their opponents. Sloppy handling however meant the Saltsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; pack had to put overtime

in, to regain possession through the scrum. The team ran in 13 tries to record a 65-0 victory, which again was testament to good all round support and working for each other. Salts team managed to finish the game with their first ever clean sheet. The fact that no tries were scored against them, was again a credit to the whole team. Solid defence against Warley RFC was followed by a clean sheet against Coalville RFC. The team ran in a further 11 tries when they visited Redditch RFC. Superb wing and support play saw the team earn a well deserved victory despite some spirited play by their opponents in the second half. The coaches could not be happier by the progress the team are making. The parents too played their part with tremendous support and words of encouragement. The lads need to build on the platform created by the victories but need to keep their feet firmly on the ground as the hard work starts now and harder fixtures lie on the horizon!!! Well done lads.
