A very special excuse I would like to thank Mike O Brien for recognising the importance of stopping this ridiculous and cynical "amended" proposal from Harworth Estates. I quote from a letter from the applicant to our planning department referring to this amended proposal : "It is agreed that • the Proposal is inappropriate development in the Green Belt; and that as such, • there is a presumption against the proposed development unless there are very special circumstances which clearly outweigh the harm to the Green Belt, and any other harm." So they are now claiming the presence of a railway siding is the very special circumstance . Having agreed not to seek consent for a distribution depot they are now seeking consent for factories ! They are proposing factories because they claim they will use railway sidings . Total rubbish . Everyone knows the days of individual wagons, mixed goods trains and marshalling yards is a romantic image of a bygone era .

This is a cynical attempt to get an outline consent . An outline consent is equivalent to a blank cheque . If granted it would enable an uncontrollable development in the green belt able to generate huge numbers of vehicles that would overwhelm the local road network and Coleshill . I am however particularly encouraged by this quote from Warwickshire Highways in respect of the amended application : "The site does have a previous industrial use, however it has never been fully considered in planning, thus in highway terms either. In terms of extant planning permission there is only an approved restoration scheme, which effectively makes the site greenfield. To restore the site as a Colliery would require planning permission. This has been pointed out to the applicants a number of times. The Highway Authority will not be considering any discounts to the proposed traffic figures for the previous use. " The railway siding is being used as A VERY SPECIAL EXCUSE . Please attend the public meeting on Thursday 27th Nov at 7.30pm. Nether Whitacre Village Hall.

A revised planning application has been submitted for Daw Mill by Harworth Estates. A further public meeting has been called to discuss the amendments.
Nether Whitacre Village Hall
Mike O’Brien talks to the crowd at the most recent public meeting regarding Daw mill, alongside Councillors Harry Taylor and Pater Fowler.
Harworth Estates Ltd has now formally submitted, as expected, an amended application for a Business Park at the former Daw Mill Colliery in North Warwickshire.
Local residents reacted angrily to the initial proposal for large scale warehousing and storage, which would have resulted in hundreds of HGVs daily trying to negotiate narrow country roads. Public meetings were held in the local villages and at a meeting with District Council Leaders Harworth Estates were left in no doubt that the initial plans would be rejected. Harworth Estates have amended the planning application. The key changes are: · The overall quantum of new built floor space proposed is reduced to 52,424 sq. m (Gross Internal Area) compared with 70,280 sq. m originally proposed. This is just over a 25% reduction in space. · There is no “B8 warehousing development” proposed in the amended application. It instead seeks to increase the amount of B2 general industrial development. They claim this increases the potential to attract significantly more high-skilled jobs to the site than the previous application. · They claim the amendments would lead to a reduction of over 70% in the predicted two-way HGV movements on local roads from the previous application. Mike O’Brien says that the amendments are not enough: “They still don’t get it. Local people don’t want HGVs using this site. None. HGVs are entirely unsuitable for the narrow country lanes through Shustoke, Coleshill, Kingsbury, Baxterley, Fillongley and Atherstone. They may have reduced the size of the problem, but they’ve not eliminated it. HGV’s are still a problem. They have a rail siding. They don’t need any HGV’s. “The position on this site is that there is an agreement between the County Council and the previous owners of Daw Mill Colliery to return it to greenbelt. Local residents have not been unreasonable, but the real risk for Harworth Estates is that local positions are now hardening against them. There is a need for jobs in the area after the
Thursday 27th Nov 7.30pm loss of hundreds of jobs when the colliery closed last year, but it’s not jobs at any price. The coal lorries were a problem for local villages for years. They don’t want a problem with HGVs that is even worse. “This is too small a concession and it’s come too late. Residents living near the site have done research and they know that other former colliery sites owned by this company have been turned into solar panel farms. There is an emerging view in some nearby villages that the site could be turned into a solar panel farm. It would make money for Harworth Estates but not so much. Others living further from the site think there ought to be some development to create high skill jobs. But no one is prepared to tolerate HGVs. “Harworth Estates need to wake up and smell the coffee. They are building stronger opposition by making concessions that don’t deal with the HGV problem. They need to go back to the drawing board again.” Daw Mill was closed by its former owner, UK Coal Operations Ltd, in March 2013 following a major fire, bringing to an end 47 years of coal production. The ownership of Daw Mill was transferred to Harworth following the insolvency of UK Coal Operations Ltd in July 2013. Owen Michaelson, Chief Executive of Harworth Estates, said: “We have responded to the concerns of the local stakeholders by reducing the size of the development by a third from our original application and by removing distribution units that will reduce movements by heavy goods vehicles to and from the site by more than 70%. “We want to make best use of Daw Mill’s assets – its railhead and its high power supply – to attract end users that will move goods via the connection to the Nuneaton to Birmingham line. “We estimate that we can deliver more than 1,000 new jobs, once the site is fully developed, directly replacing the jobs lost when the colliery ceased operating in March 2013.” A public meeting is being held on Thursday 27th November, 7.30pm at Nether Whitacre Village Hall to discuss the updated application. All are welcome so please try and attend if you can.

Unemployment figures may not be what they seem NEWS
RECENTLY released figures showing a fall in unemployment have been welcomed as good news across all major political parties. However, all may not be as it seems. Commenting on the latest unemployment figures Mike O’Brien said, “The fall in unemployment is welcome. But now the Conservatives have been warned by their Leader David Cameron to take off the rose tinted glasses about the economy. In his most bleak assessment of the economy since 2010 Mr Cameron said on Monday November 17, "red warning lights are once again flashing on the dashboard of the global economy" six years after the banking crisis "brought the world to its knees". He said we were “teetering on the brink of a possible third recession, with high unemployment, falling growth and the real risk of falling prices too…the driver of growth in the early stages of the recovery, are now slowing down.” Recent complacent claims by North Warwickshire Conservatives do not square with the warnings by even David Cameron.
“Government’s policy is hurting local families and it’s not working. We know that local people are on average £1,600 worse off since 2010. That is a startling statistic. “We also know Britain has become more unfair since 2010. The Tories have helped the rich by hitting poor. This transfer of wealth was confirmed by the independent report by the London School of Economics published on Monday (today). It finds that: Sweeping changes to benefits and income tax have had the effect of switching income from the poorer half of households to richer households. The poorest 5% lost 3% of what they would have earned if the tax system of May 2010 had been retained. The better-off half of the country has gained financially, with an increase of 2% in their disposable income. In April 2014 millionaires had a tax cut, making many £40,000 a year richer – and that’s just the size of the tax cut! That is unfair when most families face higher bills and lower income. “Whilst local unemployment is below the May 2010 level, it remains above the level before the Global Banking Crisis. We have

still not recovered the jobs we had in 2007. Many local people, including graduates, are struggling to find a job. And for those who find a job, it’s too often temporary, on a low or minimum wage and on a zero hour contract. This generation is becoming the first generation since 1945 to have less hope of a good job and a nice home than their parents. I believe that must change. "North Warwickshire was not hit as hard as Birmingham by the recession because when the mines closed our Labour Council created Business Parks at Birch Coppice, Hams Hall
and Atherstone which have grown over the years. I remind the Conservatives that I fought to create those Business Parks when I was the MP and they cannot claim any credit because Conservative Councillors voted against the creation of both Hams Hall and Birch Coppice Business Parks. “There are very real problems for local people and North Warwickshire Conservatives need to take off their rose tinted glasses - and now even David Cameron is telling them to do that.”

The Coleshill Post - November 2014- Issue 16
LOCAL residents in Coleshill have called for the streetlights to be switched back on after a recent incident on the corner of Green Lane and Castle Drive. A local woman is alleged to have been the victim of a serious attack in the early hours of the morning of Sunday 26th October. Screams were heard by local residents, but when they came to their windows they could not see into the darkness. The Police were called and later apprehended a suspect and are dealing with the issue. Trevor Deakin of Castle Drive, was asleep when he was woken by the screams. He tried to look out the window to see what was happening. Initially all he saw was darkness, because the streetlights were out. Trevor ran out of his house and was first on the scene to assist the woman. He said, “It was pitch dark. I could hear screaming, but I was unsure, due to the lack of light, how many attackers there were and whether or not they were armed. I went over and helped her. I saw more, but I can’t say much because I may be a witness in a major criminal investigation. I can only say that this is alleged to be a very serious matter indeed. Someone was arrested later that morning. “I am concerned about the streetlights and the police. The Police took 30 minutes to arrive. They had to come from Bedworth. Since we lost our Police station in Coleshill there is no one nearby when a serious incident happens. Once they got here the Police were brilliant and very supportive, but they took a long time to get here. “The plain fact is that, as a result of recent decisions, residents were left alone and in the dark to deal with a serious incident like this. The local politicians who switched the street lights out and closed our police station have a lot to answer for. I never realised the implications until I felt the fear that night as I walked out into the dark to confront something I could not see, in order to help a screaming woman. “I wasn’t the only one thankfully. My wife and neighbour joined me but having those street lights out was a nightmare. It made everything worse. No resident should have to go through what that poor girl went through that night. It has affected me but I was just a witness. I was not the victim, for whom the nightmare was even worse. The streetlights need to be switched on immediately. I want a local campaign to ensure that happens quickly.” Coleshill’s County Councillor Peter Fowler, who supports turning off the streetlights, was
contacted on numerous occasions by Trevor Deakin, but is yet to respond properly. Mr Deakin said “I emailed Cllr Fowler immediately after the incident but I had to wait two days for a reply and when it eventually came he said he couldn’t comment. I asked him, as a council tax paying resident, about street lighting policy and not the case itself so there was no reason he couldn’t adequately respond. I have subsequently emailed him on three occasions asking for his help and support as my County Councillor but I have yet to receive a reply. This is completely unprofessional. I even emailed Craig Tracey after I had one of his newspapers though my door. He told me that Cllr Fowler was ‘urgently looking into the matter’ though I’m yet to receive a response to my question as to just what Cllr Fowler is urgently looking into. I hope it’s not to find a way of ducking his responsibilities.” Town Councillor Harry Taylor lives 200 yards away on Burman Drive. He said, "This was a very disturbing incident. Trevor contacted me asking for help and support and I visited him and his wife that evening to discuss their concerns. Like the majority of residents, I’m very unhappy about this enforced darkness from Warwickshire County Council and have consistently opposed it. We want the lights back on. It is just such a shame that something like this has had to happen to make those with the power take notice." Mike O'Brien, a former Home Office Minister who is standing for Parliament for Labour has offered support to Mr Deakin and local residents. He said, "I have consistently called for the streetlights to be switched back on. This is the latest of a series of incidents. An 18 year old student was killed walking home from a late night party because a taxi driver did not see him until too late. The Coroner asked the council to review the switch off but they refused. 7 cars were burnt out in one month in the village of Keresley. Both burglary and car theft rose in the year after the lights went out. “Streetlights are a matter for the county council in Warwick and on three occasions Labour councillors have tried to get the streetlights switched back on, but they have been out voted by the larger Conservative Group and their LibDem allies. Unfortunately this is now party politics. The Coleshill Tory County Councillor has voted to switch the streetlights off and close the Police Station and the MP Dan Byles supported these things too. Trevor Deakin did a brave thing on that dark night and I am backing his call for the streetlights to be switched on immediately. I hope others will too.”

More good news on local jobs in North Warwickshire & Bedworth Craig Tracey & Dan Byles MP have today welcomed the latest figures showing that 1774 fewer people in North Warwickshire & Bedworth are claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance than in January 2010. Craig, who is standing for election locally in next year’s Parliamentary election said: “This means more local people in work, with the security of a regular pay packet and a better future ahead of them. I run a small business and know the vital role in reducing unemployment these types of businesses are providing. In the last year alone there are 461 less people unemployed in North Warwickshire & Bedworth.” Across Britain the number of people relying on Jobseeker’s Allowance has fallen to 0.93 million people, its lowest level since August 2008.
People are moving off benefits and into work, with a record 30.79 million people now in work. That’s 694,000 more people in work than a year ago. Across the West Midlands there are 87,000 more people in work compared to the last election. Craig Tracey continued: “We have seen that jobs are being created in North Warwickshire & Bedworth in places like Aldi’s HQ in Atherstone; where the Prime Minister and I visited this week. Their announcement of new local jobs as-well-as 1000s of more jobs across the country shows confidence in the Government’s long-term economic plan.” Local MP Dan Byles, who has run local jobs fairs for residents said: “Today’s strong jobs numbers are great news for our area. We’re helping people get off benefits and into work, giving them the security and peace of mind of a regular pay packet. “We have helped local businesses to create jobs by backing them with lower taxes and better infrastructure. And we have helped people get off benefits and into work through our welfare reforms, ending a something for nothing culture and making work pay.” “This means a brighter, more secure future for hardworking taxpayers in North Warwickshire & Bedworth who want to work hard and get on in life.”

Cllr Allan Holland gives reasons for defecting to UKIP in open letter POLITICS
BY CLLR ALLAN HOLLAND My first encounter with the Conservative party was in 1951. Speaking into a loud hailer, “Vote Conservative,” said I.
Well of course, at five I wasn’t sure. But the pin-striped suit, white shirt and blue tie are in my memory today still. The Prime Minister elect was a Winston Churchill of whom you may have heard. He was elected after the Labour debacle, does that seem familiar? I have enjoyed helping with the election of the MPs for this area and have met some famous legendary Conservatives. I have also had trysts with some famous Labour ministers, gone now, so RIP gentlemen. They were fun times at the Birmingham Rag Market and Stechford. In life you have to have principles that do not change with time, are not spin doctor pap, and are not modernising, PC rubbish. Decency has no ‘sell by date’. The Westminster village want to tap us on the heads. “Vote for us and do that which we want, don’t annoy us for five years” they say, and then vomit their election lies, the infamous ‘Westminster Three’. They are all the same. The state controlled BBC will let you know how to think. In 1975 there was the common market as it was called then. By his own later admission Heath lied to the people, but had no shame. Not a free trade zone as we were originally led to believe, but a confederacy controlled by Berlin, aided and abetted by Belgium and France. I have great respect for Angela Merkel ; she
humiliated Cameron. But do we want her puppet Jean Claude Junker as our PM, which de facto he will be? Can we trust Cameron 2017 for a referendum? l think about his other promises. It has been, as you can see, a decision of the heart. I am still the same Allan. But ‘The Westminster Three’ have deserted us ordinary people. So I have decided to stay as Allan with my principles and morals and merely change my underclothes so to speak. I was so honoured to be Ray Payne’s fellow Cllr; he is a man of extraordinary dedication to our village. Tina sang the song ‘Simply the Best’ – I say “My true friend and mate, enjoy your retirement Sir. These last years have been my apprenticeship and honour as your Borough Cllr. I have many projects I wish to conclude, not least our library. Don’t think the threat of closure has gone away, it hasn’t. We will see after May 7th 2015.” Yes, George (Ozzy) Osborne has got the accounts right, but how? By punishing us innocent victims and letting the guilty off “Scot Free”? I will therefore resign the Tory whip at NWBC forthwith, and of course continue my honoured role as your Councillor, standing on 7th May 2015 probably for the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP). I respect and applaud most of my fellow Councillors on both sides of the chamber. I must add in conclusion that these are my own personal views, opinions, conclusions and beliefs, and do not represent any political party or NWBC. Regards and God Bless Allan

Double whammy as defections hit local Conservatives POLITICS
Cllr Carol Fox welcomed by Mike O’Brien and Coleshill Town Councillor Harry Taylor.
CONSERVATIVE Councillors on North Warwickshire Borough have been battered by their second defection in a week.
Last week the Conservative Councillor for Water Orton, Allan Holland resigned from the party. Now, former Conservative Borough Councillor Carol Fox has crossed the floor and joined the Labour Party, stating that, “Only Labour are the real party of the people in North Warwickshire”. After many years on the council, Cllr Carol Fox, left the Conservative Party in 2013 and has since sat as an Independent. Speaking about joining Labour, Cllr Fox said, “I left the Tory party 18 months ago after getting sick of the lazy selfimportance of the old boys’ network in operation. It was deeply unpleasant. “Becoming an Independent Councillor, gave me the chance to watch each party at work objectively. “I am now convinced that only Labour are the real party of the people in North Warwickshire. The Labour Councillors care about local people. They don’t have the inflated egos of some local Conservatives. “I am partly joining Labour because I saw how the Conservative candidate behaved as the local party chairman and he is just not up to being an MP. “By contrast Mike O’Brien cares and has the strength and experience to deliver for our area. I’m backing Mike. “Frankly, the truth is that locally, the Labour guys are just more effective and they are doing a good
Local Tory Chairman hits back over recent defections David Wright, Chairman of the North Warwickshire Conservative Association, said: “Carol Fox’s decision to go from Independent to Labour has raised a few eyebrows over sincerity. She has been an outspoken critic of the Labour Party in the past and in her recent political literature she criticised a Labour Cllr elected in Hartshill stating: ‘nothing was done and questions were not answered for a year’. She also claimed that being an independent meant that she did not need to ‘keep to the Party line and defend the indefensible’. We cannot help but wonder if Cllr Fox’s decision is purely in self-interest to get elected next year, knowing that she won’t as an Independent.” “Cllr Holland told colleagues earlier this year that he had left the Conservative group to become an
job for local people. North Warwickshire Council has not raised the council tax for three years and yet they have maintained local services. That is a remarkable achievement in the face of cuts in central government funding to councils by 40%. “They have also built a new Leisure Centre in Packington Lane in Coleshill. I watched for 8 years as the Conservative Councillors squabbled and dithered whilst the old Leisure Centre deteriorated. Labour were elected in 2011 and made decisions sensibly and quickly. Labour are not only decent people, they are competent. “I know this Labour Council is delivering for North Warwickshire. I’m looking forward to getting stuck in and building on the Labour Council’s achievements.” Mike O’Brien said, “In recent years many former Conservative voters have switched to Labour, but this decision to join Labour by a high profile, long serving and respected local councillor like Cllr Carol Fox is very warmly welcomed indeed. Carol was gained a reputation as a strong-willed local champion who works hard for the people she represents. It’s great to have her join us.” Cllr Mick Stanley, the Council Leader, speaking from his hospital bed following a car accident has also welcomed Cllr Fox. He said, “This is brilliant news. I have spoken to Cllr Fox several times and I know that she has given this move a great deal of thought. I welcome her to the Council Labour Group.”
Independent, only to return to the group less than a week later. Leaving the Conservative Council group, which campaigns for lower Council taxes and is fighting HS2, to go alone on the Council will negatively impact on residents in Water Orton. We have seen that any vote for Independents or UKIP locally only helps Labour. UKIP have no elected Councillors in North Warwickshire and will not win in May; it is a two horse race between the Conservatives and Labour. Only the Conservatives will offer an in/out referendum on the EU, the Labour Party do not trust the people to make that choice. Only the Conservative Party has a long-term economic plan which is securing North Warwickshire’s future with job security and a stronger local economy; voting Labour or UKIP will threaten our growing economy.” “Ultimately both Cllrs Holland and Fox were originally elected by residents in 2011 as Conservatives. Residents were not given a say in these changes. We believe that loyalty is a quality that residents will look for in their local Councillors.”

NORTH Warwickshire & Bedworth election candidate Craig Tracey is backing an appeal to help save the lives of more people with cancer in the constituency and across the UK. With the countdown to the General Election under way, the Conservative party candidate has lent his support to Cancer Research UK’s ‘Cross Cancer Out’ campaign. Playing on the idea of a ballot paper, the campaign asks election candidates to help ‘Cross Cancer Out’ by backing a raft of vital measures to ensure cancer patients are diagnosed much earlier and have greater access to the best possible treatments. Thanks to research, survival rates have dou-
bled in the UK in the last forty years. But with more and more people being diagnosed, Cancer Research UK says determined political action is urgently needed to save more lives. Craig Tracey said: “We must not underestimate the devastating impact that cancer will have on families in North Warwickshire & Bedworth now and in the future. The good news is cutting-edge research carried out by charities like Cancer Research UK is turning the tables on the disease, but it is clear there is a critical role for politicians to play in helping to detect cancer earlier and bring innovative new treatments to patients faster. “The political drive to beat cancer must match the pace of progress in research. That’s why I’m backing the ‘Cross Cancer Out’ campaign and joining the fight to beat cancer sooner.” Sarah Woolnough, Executive Director of Policy and Information at Cancer Research UK said: “We know the earlier patients can be diagnosed and access the treatments they need, the more lives will be saved. “The next Government’s decisions will affect how fast and how far we progress in the next five years, towards our goal of beating the disease. It is a big ambition but we know with the right political support we will get there sooner – so we’re asking all local election candidates to make a commitment to ‘Cross Cancer Out’ and help ensure no-one’s life is cut short by the disease.” For more information and ways to get involved in the campaign, visit cruk.org/crosscancerout or join the conversation on twitter #CrossCancerOut.

NWBC takes HS2 fight to parliament

HS2 UPDATE
NORTH Warwickshire Borough Council this week continued its fight against the controversial HS2 project by appearing before a select committee of MPs in the House of Commons.
The Council, which is leading the fight locally against the hugely disruptive and expensive scheme, is due in Parliament on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday this week to appeal to MPs to agree to a range of measures to ease the pain for communities in the Borough. Together with the County Council, North Warwickshire Borough Council will ask MPs for greater environmental protection, particularly around the Kingsbury Railhead, a designated member of staff to coordinate the huge amount of works in the Borough and proper compensation for the loss of income caused by the disruption to business.
Speaking about the appearance in Parliament, the Council's HS2 spokesman Councillor Brian Moss (Lab) said: "The fight against this unneeded and unwanted project continues and taking our requests to MPs is an important step given that the Secretary of State has refused to meet with us. We cannot at this stage argue against the principle of the scheme but will be highlighting the real problems it will cause our communities that we don't think HS2 have addressed properly. One issue is how HS2 will generate enough electricity to power the new trains". Supporting the Council's work, the Conservative Party's spokesman Councillor Tilly May added: "The Council has been united in this fight and I am pleased we have already gained a number of concessions from HS2. The work of the Borough's action groups and other Councils on the line has been valuable in trying to reduce the impact of this awful rail scheme."

Beeline celebrates 30 years: Welcome to our Open Day Beeline Community Transport is celebrating 30 years of providing transport for North Warwickshire residents who have no other means of getting to their medical appointments.
In 1984 Beeline had 18 volunteer drivers who took patients to a handful of hospitals and could only help half of North Warwickshire; now we have nearly 40 drivers who transport residents from all over North Warwickshire and neighbouring villages and take them to anywhere in the country. We’ve even taken someone to London, Manchester, Nottingham and Derby!
To mark the occasion Beeline will be throwing open the doors of the Partnership Centre on Coleshill Road on Friday 21st November at 10.30am until 2.30pm. Why not drop in and find out more about the vital contribution Beeline makes to our community. Upstairs, in the Cadbury Conference Room, will be Beeline’s history, old newspaper cuttings and photos. Next door is Beeline’s office where either Pat or Gemma will be hard at work sorting our client journeys. Downstairs, in the Norman Painting Room will be more information about the current service, places we go, the villages we help, where the drivers
are based to do all the transporting, as well as the important refreshments: tea, cake and biscuits. (Sandwiches can be provided at a price by the Atherstone Over 50s.) We will also have a Beeline cake , which our Chair will cut at 1.30pm, and a raffle. Now that Beeline has to raise its own funds to survive we will be launching the Beeline Thermometer which will show our progress towards raising £15,000 which is our target for this year. For more information about the service or volunteering please phone 01827 717074 or go to our website www.beelinect.org.uk .

WEDNESDAY NIGHT IS
NIGHT
If you don't have a car, maybe because you're young or elderly, then they matter an awful lot. So, I was interested in the implications of the recent announcement by Ed Miliband to give councils more powers over local bus services. He said the next Labour Government will "legislate so that city and county regions can set fares, decide routes, and integrate bus services with trams, trains and the wider public transport network.” It struck me that this sort of thing could revolutionise public transport in Coleshill. You know what? We need a revolution in our bus services. Our local bus services are terrible. They don’t run at the right times or frequency. They are expensive. They fail to connect people with job hotspots such as Birch Coppice, Hams Hall or Birmingham Business Park. It’s also important to note that this lack of connectivity means fewer people can travel into Coleshill to spend money in the local shops. Since 2010 our Coleshill bus services have being slowly dying the death by a thousand cuts. At the same time a recent cross party committee of MP’s has warned that reducing or removing local bus services "made people more socially isolated, in some cases removing the only bus link between their village and the nearest town". And it’s true. I’ve had numerous Coleshill residents tell me about the impact the cuts to our local bus service have had on their lives. One local resident could no longer get to work at the business park because of cuts to the bus service. The County Council runs our bus service. I don’t believe it has any vision for local bus services, other than that it should cost less. There is no vision for improved service delivery. So the future, at the moment, is fewer and fewer buses serving our town. However, those words ‘at the moment’ means that things could change. Labour’s plan to legislate to give regions more power on local bus services is a start but we need more than that here. We also need a champion for bus services in Coleshill. We haven’t got anyone at the moment who does that job. We need someone at the decision making table who stands up for local residents. When the County Council changed the bus service earlier this year, we had no voice in the meeting opposing the changes? So we ended up without a bus to the Birmingham Business Park in peak times. This affected large numbers of people and no one at the County Council said anything on behalf of Coleshill! Here are four steps that should be taken to improve bus service provision in Coleshill: 1. Create a link with Network West Midlands so that tickets brought in Coleshill can be used across our region. 2. Ensure bus times for the no.70 link up with other Network West Midlands services that leave public transport hubs like Chelmsley Wood and Birmingham. 3. Work with Network West Midlands to bring more bus services to Coleshill that create quicker direct links to Birmingham, Solihull and Coventry. 4. Create a new shuttle bus to local employment hot spots such as Birmingham Business Park, Hams Hall and Birch Coppice. We have the opportunity to expand the job opportunities for local people and provide isolated people with the chance to get out to local shops, amenities and public services. The failure to take this opportunity for improved connectivity is too grave to consider. I don’t want us to end up a town stuck in the middle of Warwickshire and the West Midlands known as the forgotten land! And to avoid it we need a revolution – on the buses.

COMMUNITY
LOCAL members of The Young at Hearts Senior Citizens Club, who meet weekly at the Community Centre in Temple Way, celebrated their 20th anniversary in October this year. The club was the idea of Cllr. Peter Fowler and local residents Iris Cox and her late husband Jim. The idea was to have a place where local senior citizens could meet together and enjoy each others company. A donation was made by Warwickshire County Council to start the club off and since then it has been self-financed by its members
with occasional donations from other organisations. Chairman, Iris Cox said: “Residents meet every Tuesday for an afternoon of bingo and on occasions we enjoy day trips and meals out. For many its a social event to meet with friends, old and new and I hope that the club continues for many years to come”. Peter added; “I am delighted that that Young at Heart Club is still going strong and I was honored to have been invited to join the party to celebrate it’s 20th year. I am looking forward to celebrating many more anniversaries with them.”

Mrs Rose Taylor celebrates her 100th Birthday CELEBRATION
ONE of Coleshill's eldest residents celebrated her centenary year on 31st October. Mrs Rose Taylor, now a resident at Orchard Blythe Residential Home, was born in South Wales in 1914 just a few months after the outbreak of the great war. By the time she reached her 21st Birthday she was eager to spread her wings and so travelled to Coleshill where she stayed until this very day, raising her family and working hard at the same time. Surprisingly she still has her lovely Welsh accent after all these years. Rose was head of the canteen at Smiths Forge on Station Road for many, many years and only moved in to Orchard Blythe two
9
years ago age 98. Mrs Taylor smiled: “I had to move into here after I broke my hip two years ago. Until then I was quite active. My mind is perfect but I could do with some new arms and legs that's all!.” Full of praise for centre manager Hayely, Mrs Taylor is clearly very happy in her new home. I was ushered away after a few minutes chatting so that Rose could prepare for the imminent Halloween Party that evening. 100 years old and still partying. Rose is a real inspiration to everybody she meets, her lust for life is still strong and I am looking forward to visiting again on her 101st birthday. Happy birthday Mrs Talyor from everybody at The Coleshill Post.

Woodlands brand new Sixth Form Centre is now open EDUCATION
THE official opening of the new Woodlands Sixth Form Centre marked the end of a long and substantial list of modifications and enhancements to the Woodlands School environment.
Iain Paterson, Headteacher, stated: “Woodlands School is a Broad Spectrum special school that caters for pupils with a wide range of needs, from 2 year olds through to 19. Our population has grown substantially, as has complexity of need. In order to anticipate and respond to this evolving picture, we have worked hard
with the Local Authority to adapt our environment. It is a pleasure to work in a county that had the vision to create Broad Spectrum schools several years ago, and which continues to support their evolution. Today marks the end of processes made possible through £700,000 of investment from Warwickshire and the Government. This revenue came from 2 successful grant applications. The first grant enabled us to adapt/modernise several areas of school and to extend and completely redesign our changing rooms. The second grant enabled us to create a brand new Sixth Form Centre.
For our 16 to 19 year olds, there is now a thoroughly modern environment that powerfully marks their right of passage. We are especially indebted to Tony Philips (Project Manager), Phil Taylor of Morespace (the company that created the Centre) and John Harmon (Local Authority Assets Manager). I am also grateful to my Deputy, Pet, and Site Manager, Jez, for their hard work and flexibility. Without their support, the rapid changes to our environment would not have been possible. We are continuing to think creatively, and look forward to future possible projects, such as a 19 to 25 provision!”

Water Orton Villager
The Coleshill Post
PARISH CLERK
HS2 UPDATE
Welcome to ‘The Villager’ November 2014 There are many issues concerning Water Orton, HS2, developments on New Road and the unexpected announcement of a new school, to name but a few.
The Parish Council is fighting the corner for the Village to get the best and most successful outcome to all of these issues. The Pavilion is continuing to get used more by the local community (see article elsewhere for hire details). I would like to thank Nathan Smith who provides a cleaning and caretaking service to the council for the Pavilion. I would again like to give special thanks to our groundsman Colin, he does a fantastic job in the Village keeping on top of things such as repairs, emptying the bins, graffiti removal, tending to the plants, marking out the football pitch etc. The planters in the Village have been sponsored by Orchard Nurseries, Birmingham Road, a big thank you to them. I think we all agree they have been a welcome vibrant display to the Village. I would like to thank again the volunteers who patrol the village litter picking they do a super job in keeping the Village clean and tidy. Whilst the Borough Council does a splendid job in the general bin emptying etc the general appearance and cleanliness of the village is down in no small part to the army of volunteers. If in the future you want to tell people something or mention a good deed done for the community in the Village please contact me and we will try to include it in future commentaries. Best wishes, Jacquie Coombes, Clerk to the Parish Council. 0121-749-2445, clerk@wopc.org.uk
GROUNDSMAN
Winter is almost upon here Unfortunately winter is almost upon us, but at least this year we’ve had a decent summer. The football pitch is holding up well considering the varying weather conditions.
With the summer being so good both the facilities on the Village Green and the Playing Fields, have been well used. Most users of the open spaces provided generally leave the areas tidy. A special thank you to all of the volunteers. Without the volunteers, litter picking, cleaning bus shelters, watering flower tubs plus a multitude of other tasks the appearance of the village would be a lot different. Regards, The Groundsman

Final chance for positive mitigation approaches After nearly 5 years of contesting the route of HS2 and its impact on the Water Orton, we are now approaching the final chance we have of positive mitigation, with the Parliamentary Select Committee hearings this month. This has had quite an astounding affect upon HS2 Ltd and their previous non-responsive stance to anything the Water Orton Action Group had proposed over the last 3 years. Finally in an official response received only last month, all our proposed alternatives to the existing route have been rejected based purely on potential unproven costs. Then, via announcements made last week in the
DEVELOPMENT
New build off New Road There is no dispute that there is a need for more affordable housing. Yes the government are backing new builds but at what cost?
Water Orton is close to all amenities and under the constant threat of HS2, why give us more. When new builds are suggested should we not hear about it, should we not be consulted, should close neighbours be more aware of plans? These questions arise following the possibility of extra housing being built on what appears to be an already full site. If we consider the small amount of land and the already agreed planning permission of 31 houses, squeezing another 6 into a previous used garden area seems a little tight to say the least. How do we all feel about the access
local press, it now appears HS2 Ltd have been working with Warwickshire County Council in drawing up detailed plans to move our school to the fields adjacent to Plank Lane behind Mickle Meadow. This was a surprise to all concerned within the village, as no positive consensus of villagers’ feelings towards this proposal has been obtained to justify Warwickshire County Council’s remit in working with HS2 Ltd behind our backs. What this means is that HS2 Ltd are wilfully ignoring the £46m wiped off the value of property within the village due to “blight”. When they responded that the route alternatives suggested by the Action Group “may” potentially cost more than the existing proposed route,
route to the new builds? Somehow it does not appear wide enough and really how safe is it to turn out of the access point onto the main road through the village. Yes, this has been passed as Highways had no objections. The information below is from Warwickshire council’s website -Planning applications are required to be assessed and decided on ‘proper’ planning grounds. These might include; possible loss of light, possible loss of privacy as a result of the proposed development, effect upon highway safety, effect upon parking and traffic issues, proposals effect upon the design and appearance of an area, or on listed buildings and/or conservation areas close by (if applicable), requirement to take into account local and national planning policies and Government guidance. If we think of the above and the effect this may have on some in the very vicinity do we think they have taken all this into account. If you feel you agree then submit your views to the parish council we would welcome your thoughts and ideas around this.
they neglected to take this into account. But, they have concluded that moving the school is a more acceptable idea, perhaps because it is relatively cheap compared to altering the HS2 route. Also, any costs can be recouped by selling the current school grounds to developers to build new houses on. Something no one in the village would relish? Let us not predict the outcome of the Select Committee Hearing’s decision on Water Orton Action Group’s alternative proposals, but the collusion of HS2 Ltd and Warwickshire County Council before the hearing does nothing to dispel the general public feeling towards the contempt our politicians and the machinations of government hold us in.
Why not hire the Pavilion for your function/meeting/ group activity The Water Orton Parish Pavilion is located in Openfield Croft and is available for private functions. The main hall is approximately 9 x 7 metres.
There is a small kitchen with drinks making facilities, cooker and fridge. Crockery is also provided. Tables and chairs are in the hall. Additionally there are male, female and disabled toilets. Disabled access. The heating and insulation are both of the highest specification. The Pavilion also has the benefit of a car park. The room is an ideal venue for children’s parties, Christenings, meetings, clubs etc. available to hire by the hour (minimum 2 hours). For full details of availability and charges please contact the Parish Clerk, Jacquie Coombes on 0121 749 2445 or email clerk@wopc.org.uk.

Cllr Mick Stanley Leader of NWBC
T
hwack! I heard my bones crack as the car hit me. My ankle was shattered and my leg was broken in two places.
I had seen the car coming up the road and thought the driver must have seen me crossing the road with my wife and daughter. He obviously didn’t. The car hit my leg as I tried to get to the pavement. It was about 10.30 at night in Nuneaton. We had been to a Folk Singing evening at the Crown Pub near the Railway Station. One of my hobbies is that I sing in a band. Yes, folks, the Leader of the Council sings! My daughters and some other friends who also play instruments and my job is to sing. Its mostly traditional Irish songs and we have a good time. Anyway, my wife, Yvette, suggested we went to listen at this folk night and we came out having enjoyed it. I was hit by the car and ended up lieing flat on my back on the cold road. It’s only when you lie down on the road on a damp night in November that you realise how cold the road is – and there are not many people who have experienced that out of choice! Anyway, I remember thinking it would take a long time for the ambulance to get there
Praise butters no parsnips in the NHS and I was freezing and in pain; then suddenly the ambulance and Police were there. It can’t have been more than a couple of minutes. They were brilliant. Two young ambulance women came to help me. They reassured me, got me into the ambulance. They got me to the George Eliot Hospital very quickly. I cannot praise them highly enough. The bottom line is that when I needed the NHS and the Police they were there for me. I am now in a hospital bed at George Eliot Hospital and due to the extent of my injuries, I may be here some time. I had an operation last Friday and I’m due to have another one this week. My leg and ankle are in a bit of a state. My Deputy Leader Cllr Ray Sweet from Baddesley will continue to run North Warwickshire Borough Council. He will do a good job of it. I have a great team there. And I am always here for advice. After all, my leg is broken, but not my brain! It’s remarkable how quickly your life can be
changed by an accident like this or perhaps a heart attack or a stroke. One minute you are free and independent and the next, your life is restricted, you are dependent on the NHS and need the help of the state. I am retired, but it occurs to me if I had been a working parent I could have been dependent on state benefits and my life could have altered enormously in an instant. As it is, I face a long convalescence and it will be some time before I know the extent of my future ability to walk. One thing is for sure; I am not going to be running around delivering leaflets in the near future. Lying here in bed in a hospital watching what goes on, reminds you how hard nurses work. Patients need a lot of constant care. Changing, washing, feeding. It’s hard work. I greatly admire the patience the nurses show to patients. Never complaining. Always cheerful – well, nearly always! But I have seen how busy the nurses are. They are overstretched. They need help. I can now understand why Ed Miliband has
promised the creation of 20,000 more nurses. It’s the extra help nurses need. The NHS is wonderful. I am so glad that great Labour Parliamentarian, Aneurin Bevan, created it in 1948. Certainly, no one has asked if I can pay, like they do in America or as they did in this country before the NHS. We have a great national institution. But it cannot exist on a combination of praise and the goodwill of staff. It needs money. Blair trebled its funding, but since 2010 NHS funding has flat lined. With an aging population making more demands on the NHS, with increased expectations of high quality service, with medical innovations needing additional funding and with reductions in doctors hours, the NHS needs an annual funding increase of about 4% - even to maintain a steady state. It’s just not had that since May 2010 and the service is stressed. Maybe some bureaucracy can be taken out, but I hope people understand that the sort of praise I have lavished on the NHS in this column is no substitute for money from our taxes. Praise butters no parsnips in the NHS. Believe me when I say this from personal experience I know that when a car hits you and you hear that thwack as your bones smash and you know your life has changed, you need to believe the NHS will be there for you.

Coleshill Women’s Institute October meeting WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
BY SALLY JONES OCTOBER’S speaker David Hopkins gave a fascinating talk on the charity Water Aid which works in 28 countries, mainly in Africa where 4000 children die each day from diseases that would be easily preventable with basic sanitation. The charity aims to provide safe, clean water supplies in villages where women currently spend hours a day walking for miles to rivers or wells to carry back heavy containers of water for their families on their heads. The time saved allows the women to do a job, cultivate crops and send their children to school, improving the lives of the whole community. Some women go round by bike to explain the importance of handwashing to

their neighbours and Water Aid also provides cement and equipment to build wells and enclosed toilets and to dig deeper for water in areas where it is far below the surface/Mr Hopkins judged the monthly competition, for a poem with the opening line: “Water, water everywhere...” and awarded first place to Brenda Sheard, with Mal Downes second and Joy Hancock third. All three poems were loudly applauded particularly Brenda’s verse: “Water water everywhere; the rain it kept on falling. Cried Mrs Noah, “When will it stop, I find it quite appalling. To have to share our floating home with snakes and snails and spidersAs well as having wolves and bears cooped up so close beside us.Why did you bring TWO mice along; there’s now about four scoreAnd as for rabbits, I dread to look. Each day there’s more and more. Please tell me Noah, when will it stop? We’re running out of foodThe skunks and camels, goats and apes have got such nasty habits The constant roars and gibbons’ screams are making me feel ill If we don’t reach dry land quite soon, we’ll have to eat the rabbits! Joy Hancock described how she had joined the WI in 1966, following in the footsteps of her mother and aunt and encouraged everyone to get more closely involved. She and secretary Brenda Sheard are stepping down from the WI committee in November after decades of service and both urgedmembers to volunteer for the committee and have more say in the running of this friendly, close-knit organisation. Wishaw WI hosted the Autumn
Group meeting at Curdworth Village Hall with an entertainment on George Formby’s life and music from Kevin Barton who performed several of his hits and finished with a group sing-song of Formby favourites including ‘Leaning on a Lamppost’ and ‘When I’m Cleaning Windows’. Judith Tattersall judged the the competition for a pumpkin pie which Wishaw won, with Coleshill second and Coleshill Country Market ran a popular stall of cakes and preserves. The WI will be running a stall at Coleshill Christmas Fair at the Town Hall
on Saturday 29th November and Gill Tyers appealed for seasonal prizes for the tombola. The Institute’s darts team, finalists in the last WI county Championship, bowed out in the first round this year but are continuing their weekly practice sessions. The monthly Scrabble afternoons are underway, hosted by Brenda Sheard . The national WI celebrates its centenary in 2015 and the AGM on June 4th at the Royal Albert Hall will be taped live and streamed at Walmley Social Club to allow local members to watch the day’s proceedings. Christine Jones represented Coleshill at the Lord Leycester Hospital in Warwick for the handing-on of the WI centenary baton from Warwickshire to Northamptonshire WI. The baton began its journey at Llanfair PG on Anglesey where the movement began in Britain and will pass through every county in England and Wales before reaching London in June. Christine met one of the Lord Leycester’s traditionally dressed Brethren who welcomed delegates to the ceremony in the Great Hall. Coleshill WI is offering two bursaries to help members interested in attending one of Denman College’s wide range of courses. The Annual Meeting on 11th November will feature a crochet session where beginners will be taught by more experienced members with yarn and crochet hooks supplied. Squares produced during the evening will be stitched together to produce blankets for the Dogs’ Home. Members will bring in their Christmas Child boxes of presents for deprived children overseas. Visitors welcome as always.

Honesty Reliability Punctuality HONESTY, reliability and punctuality are three words that describe EH Express Cars prefectly.
Based at Birmingham Business Park, near The NEC, EH Express Cars really are bucking the trend in the private hire industry. With a fleet of 22 cars, all of which are high end executive models, they offer a service like no other. Founder and owner Ejaz Hussain is the driving force behind the company. His enthusiasm and attention to detail are second to none. He commented: "I set the company up in November 2012. I wanted to create a private hire firm with a difference by providing a pleasurable, friendly and ultimately professional service. When you order a car from us you will be greeted by a smart, courteous driver and treated with the utmost respect." "We pride ouselves on never, ever being late and always showing our passengers to the car, making certain they are comfortable before we commence the journey." "We specialise in corporate work, airport transfers and weddings etc. We steer clear of the pubs and clubs if we can help it. We also offer special rates for OAP's and do whatever we can to help out as we feel they are often neglected." During the freezing temperatures of recent winters Ejaz offered to collect prescriptions for elderly customers who were unable to get out, free of charge, and also delivered food to some of the most needy OAP's in the B46 area. The firm does an awful lot for charity too with an
15
emphasis on children and the elderly. Ejaz credits two drivers in particular with helping to make EH Express Cars so successful. The first two drivers on the firm are still with him to this day, Dave and Jo. Speaking with Jo, one of many female drivers, she had this to say about her employer: "It is a brilliant atmosphere here, being so professional and making sure that each customer is treated with respect and the same level of courtesy, whether a large corporate firm or a private booking, gives me a great deal of pride and job satisfaction. We arrive
at every call within 10-15 minutes guaranteed and try to look after our clients far more than any other firm I know. I am very proud to say that I work for EH Express Cars" Ejaz thanks Jo and Dave for their continued support and credits them both with making the company what it is. Especially when a recent contract came through from a German company working with BMW at Hams Hall. The pressure was on to transport between 40 and 80 delegates during a one hour window in the morning and evening of one day.
Needless to say that the day went without a single hiccup and the company sent Ejaz a thank you letter for his ultimate level of service and professionalism. As well as transporting customers between destinations, the links built up with various hotels also allows them to arrange hotel rooms at very short notice where others may not be able to. The service offered by Ejaz and his fleet of drivers really is second to none and has to be experienced to be believed. So the next time you need to get somewhere and want to arrive in style and on time, give EH Express Cars a call.

BY DAVID COLE Librarian - Band of The West Midlands Fire Service
THE Band of The West Midlands Fire Service, a full size military band based in Birmingham, had an important concert engagement in Paris on Saturday last, 1st November. Unfortunately their regular drum kit player was unable to go and so BWMFS asked Simon Toon, the kit player and Band Sergeant from Coleshill Town Band if he was able to step in as a “dep.” And would he mind a few days in Paris? Simon was pleased to accept and went with them leaving Sutton Coldfield Fire Station at 0615 on Wednesday morning for a long coach journey via The Tunnel for a programme of rehearsals, sightseeing and a concert. However, Simon did not forget his promise to remember every soldier from Coleshill who died in the First War on the anniversary of their death. And
so, at 5.00 pm, on Friday 31st Simon and several members of BWMFS took time out from their busy programme to pause quietly at the French War Memorial in the beautiful park around the Chateau St. Germain to remember Drummer Albert Gallagher of Coleshill who died of wounds on 31st October, 1914. The French Memorial in St. Germain is very fine and beautifully kept, surrounded by wooded paths, trimmed lawns and immaculate flower beds. It is an entirely appropriate place to keep a promise to remember. At 5.00 p.m Simon lit a candle and read a little about the life and death of Albert Gallagher. Curious French passers-by recognised something special was happening and paused, quietening their children and watching respectfully. After a minutes quiet reflection Simon thanked everyone for their attendance and everyone resumed their daily lives having remembered Albert Gallagher of Coleshill on a sunny afternoon in Paris.

@ColeshillPost
BY HARRY TAYLOR The Mayor of Coleshill
I
Ok, I'm exaggerating, but nothing in my calendar compares to the importance of remembrance day in this centenary year of the outbreak of the Great War. When I was a young boy I remember vividly playing with my grandad Harry's medals. He always seemed serious and slightly scary to an inquisitive child. I recall one occasion asking if he'd been in the war and I don't remember getting a reply. He never spoke about the war. He died when I was 10-yearsold and I wish frequently that I could sit down in front of him now and ask him about his experiences. I know now that he was a Sergeant in the Royal Warwickshires, part of General Slim's 14th Army battling the Japanese in Burma. They were called the "forgotten army" because it was said people back home, preoccupied with the war against Germany and her allies, forgot about the men fighting the Japanese in the Far East. Little remains now but some yellowed army documents, letters and maybe a black and white photo. There
are still memories. One senior Coleshill lady told me a few months back that he had had "a very bad war" and was "never the same". My first memories of attending Remembrance Day services were as a small boy with my dad and grandad. I knew what we were there for but at that age I had no concept of the horrendous experiences of those we were remembering. My grandad is gone now but I still go to the service every year. There are no men still alive who witnessed the battles of the Great War but we still attend services of remembrance. And why do we go? We go because we should never forget the service and sacrifice nor the futility of war. Remembrance Day in Coleshill this year was exceptionally moving. People lined the streets as we paraded behind Coleshill Town Band towards the church. It was standing room only in the church and a magnificent turnout. I felt truly honoured to do a reading and to lay the first wreath on the memorial. While the names of the fallen were being read out and with a column of wreath layers representing our community behind me, I kept thinking back to those first memorial services I attended and how much I wished grandad was there now. He is gone though, like the men of the Great War and so many of the Second and the wars of recent times. But they will never be forgotten. We will continue to remember.

The importance of remembrance was incredibly nervous as November approached. So far being the Mayor of Coleshill has mainly involved going around the county and meeting other mayors, buying raffle tickets and eating cake.

On Friday 3rd of October, local resident Patrick Foster Smith, together with his close friends, Brian and Paddy Nicholson set off from Coleshill for France.
Brian and Paddy who are members of the the Coleshill Twinning Association, have been working closely with Patrick to organise their stand at this special WW1 exhibition in France. They have also received considerable support from Monsieur Gerard of La Comité Historique de Mazingarbe. “We travelled on the Dover – Calias ferry across to France on the Friday and then drove to Mazengarbe. Mr Gerard had arranged for us to stay at a Chambie –D’hôte (B&B), where Monsieur Philippe Demarcq made us very welcome and comfortable. We then went to start setting up the exhibition at the Mazengarbe Exhibition Hall (this is about 4 times the size of Coleshill Town Hall). That evening we had a warm reception and fantastic meal with Monsieur Freddy Ducrocq and his family. It was an excellent start to the trip.” On the Saturday morning they finished decorating the exhibition stand ready for the opening at 12.00 noon and met other exhibitors. Even before the official opening of the exhibition, the French edition of Patricks book had started to sell. There were many exhibitors with many different and individual stories, all keen to share them with Patrick and all exhibitors were French, except Patrick, Paddy and Brian! Patrick received a great deal of interest, especially regarding the stories in his book, “In my Fathers Footsteps”, as these conflicted at times with the recording of events from the French side. A particular point of interest was that it was thought that the Engineers unit, that his father served in, were all completely wiped out in France. As Patrick comically explained to them – “well I wouldn’t be here if that were the case!”. Those who have already bought the book in Coleshill, will have noticed that there are blank pages at the back. This is because it was always Patrick’s intention that the reader could add appendices or more information of their own and the excited French book purchasers immediately scribbled new notes onto the blank pages, as if the pages were awaiting their comments! At approximately 5.00pm the Mayor of Mazingarbe, Bernard Urbaniak, and his wife Eva came around the exhibition and spent a long time at their stall. Eva saw a picture of the Colwyn Bay training camp and was overjoyed because she was born in Colwyn Bay and knew North Wales very well. Needless to say yet another book was sold but in this case, The English version, since her husband the Mayor had been presented earlier in the day with the French version.
On Sunday, 5th October, the Exhibition reopened and continued, but later in the day Patrick had a chance to go to the War Cemetery at Mazingarbe to see where the soldiers of the 216th Regiment were buried and whilst there he was presented with the beret and badge of the Honorary Guard of Honour to Notre-Dame de Lorette. This was a huge surprise and a great honour, as they told him that this presentation has never been granted to any Englishman before. The two exhibitions days were an absolute joy and success for Patrick and his friends, introducing them to many local people who were keen to tell their stories and share their memories and introduce other local residents who shared their own histories with great delight. In the evening the exhibitors were treated to a magnificent meal. Patrick, Brian and Paddy were presented with a porcelain vase with a picture of Mazingarbe and a hamper of beer and wine which was accepted with delight as this was a fitting ending to a most memorable and very emotional day. The generosity and hospitality of the citizens of Mazingarbe was over-whelming and Patrick has already been asked to exhibit again in different towns within the local area. After this successful trip, Patrick is pleased to say that he has much more to tell and will be putting this new information together as soon as possible, so that people can add it to their books. And to start the readers off, Patrick shares the following information with us: “For those who are familiar with his book and The Story of The Farmer’s Wife: The very attractive teenage daughters Sophie, Stephanie and Marie were evacuated in 1917, when the government moved them to a farm at Bois-d- Mont because their farm was to be converted into a hospital ambulance station. He understands that the Historian from Bouvigny (called Elizabeth), knows the next generation of this family and so she has bought copies of the book for them, so their story can continue to evolve”. More work and research is on the way for the coming new year. Patrick says “All this literary success and historical information has only has come together because of the continued help and support given to him by the Coleshill Community Hub.” Patrick would like to give specific thanks to his friends Brian and Paddy Nicolson, Susan and Luke Hundleby and Richard Harwood of the Coleshill Post. If anyone has anyone further information that may assist Patrick or wishes to get in contact with him, please call into the Hub and they’ll put you in touch. Jessie back behind the bar at 93!
The Coleshill Post
O
n the 4th November 2014 (Jessie's Birthday) Jessie Plumb was back behind the bar of the Green Man Pub after thirty years in retirement. Jessie was the landlady of the Green Man with her husband Dennis for 18 years.
They both retired in 1986. Landlady Helen graciously welcomed Jessie back behind the bar, and stepped aside to let Jessie be at the helm once again. There were a number of regulars in the bar, some of whom were customers during Jessie and Den's reign, so it was an afternoon of reminiscence, laughter, and well wishes. “It is such a coincidence.” said Helen, “We were only talking about Jessie a night or two ago with some of the regulars who remembered them both, so it's so lovely to welcome her back after such a long time". During her time at the Green Man, Jessie was well known for her culinary delights... particularly the infamous 'Green Man pasty' a recipe she has kept under wraps. She used to make dozens if not hundreds of these a month, some were consumed on the premises but a number of customers had batches on order to take home. "I used to do all the cooking in the small kitchen at the back of the pub, I used to do pasties, hamhocks, joints of meat, oxtail stew, tripe and onions. I once had a pigs head cooking in the 'snug', one day one of my lady customers
PICTURED: Former Landlady Jesse Plumb celebrating her 93rd behind the bar at the Green Man with current landlay Helen Ray.
came in, saw it and fainted" said Jessie. "The pub has changed since then, but largely it feels the same - a lovely cosy pub, happy atmosphere. I remember painting all the bar area, getting up early to paint the doors and hope the customers wouldn't stick to it, and not forgetting my two long standing bar staff Tim and Lil who were a part of the team and who helped with the painting amongst other things". We also had to relocate the cellar as the draughtsman refused to take the crates upstairs, and as Dennis was regularly playing golf - I wasn't
going to take on that job too. One regular, Mr Steve Walton recalled telephoning Jessie one evening at 11.30pm after taking a young lady out for a date, " I asked if she could do us both some food as I had nothing to eat in the house not even a loaf of bread, and we were really hungry. Well, we turned up to the Green Man to be greeted with a lovely plate of food each and a pint...with the order to sup up and out ! she also used to give me a clip round the ear with a wooden spoon too if I was out of order any time". Jessie is not as mobile as she was a year
or two ago, so many people who would have normally seen her walking up and down the high street may not have seen her about for a while. Therefore, an impromptu trip to the Green Man Pub for a cheeky one (or two!) of her favoured Gordon's Gin and tonic was just the ticket for her birthday. "I have really enjoyed seeing the old pub again, and many thanks to Helen for a lovely welcome, showing me round and listening to me rattle on about how things were. I have particularly enjoyed seeing some of the 'old' faces, and reminiscing about the old times".

A Guide for First Time Buyers (England & Wales, The Process) FINANCE
B
uying a home for the first time is probably the biggest thing you will ever do and for some can be quite a daunting prospect. Nowadays there is a wealth of information available on the internet which can help but can also confuse if you are new to the world of financial matters. In this guide I will cover some of the key things you should know when looking to buy your first home and it may even be useful to people looking to move on to their next home. In this first part I will look at the process and then the next article will focus on the costs. Lets first of all look at the process of buying and what is involved. The starting point should always be to consider what you can afford to buy and this is determined by two things. The size of your deposit and how much of a mortgage you are able to secure. The deposit can come from your own savings or by way of a non repayable gift from your family usually parents so this is fairly straightforward. How much you can borrow will be determined by your income and personal circumstances and for this you should seek advice before looking for a property so that you have a good idea of what size mortgage you are able to secure. Once you know what value properties you are able to consider the next task is to find a new home that you want to buy. When buying a home for the first time I always tell people to focus on whether you like the property primarily over and above whether you consider it to be a good investment. The reason for this is that property values rise and fall and if you focus too much on whether you may make money then you risk buying
a property that you don’t want to live in for very long and could lose money if you choose to sell too soon. Once you have found a home that you want to buy you will need to make an offer usually through the estate agent involved to buy the property. The offer can be for the full asking price, below or even in some cases in excess of the asking price depending on how strong the housing market is at the time. Most estate agents as part of the offer process will want to see documentary evidence of your finances in the form of bank statements to evidence your deposit and a mortgage agreement in principle certificate to evidence your ability to obtain a mortgage for the amount required. Hence the need to seek mortgage advice before searching for a property so you are properly prepared. Once you have had an offer accepted to buy your new home the next stage is to apply for the mortgage and it is at this stage that you supply financial documents to the lender together with any fees they require. I will more fully explain these fees in the next article. It will also be at this point that you appoint a solicitor to handle the purchase of the property for you. The solicitor’s job is to ensure that you obtain proper legal ownership and that anything which could effect your enjoyment of your new home is identified if at all possible, a good example would be if a new road junction is to be built which would block your driveway. Your solicitor will also act on behalf of your mortgage lender in order to secure their interest on the property as they will be securing the mortgage debt against it and they need to know that they have good security for their money. During the mortgage application process
the lender will arrange a valuation of the property to assess whether they are happy to lend their money secured against the property. When the valuation is done and assuming it is satisfactory and the lender has carried out all of their checks they will issue their formal mortgage offer with the terms and conditions. A copy of this is sent to you and your solicitor. With the mortgage offer and having carried out the legal work on behalf of you and the lender your solicitor will send you a report on the property, the contracts to purchase the property and the mortgage deed to sign. Provided you are happy with the contents of these documents and once you have transferred the required deposit money and costs to your solicitor a date will be agreed upon to conclude the purchase. The purchase is concluded in two stages, exchange of contracts and completion. These can occur simultaneously or on separate days. On exchange of contracts where the purchaser and seller exchange to signed contracts to buy/ sell the property each side becomes obliged to complete on the deal and can not withdraw. Subsequently completion will occur and funds transferred and it is at this point you become the legal owner of your first home and will usually go and collect the keys from the estate agent. Next months article I will focus on the costs of buying your first home mostly in connection with obtaining the mortgage. Therefore if you are considering moving or buying for the first time please feel free to contact me for advice in securing your next or first mortgage. In all cases we charge a fee for mortgage arrangement of £195 on completion of the transaction plus any commission paid by the lender. Alternatively, you can choose to pay a fee of 1% of the mortgage amount subject to a minimum of £995 and receive the commission from the lender. OBITUARY
Sir William Dugdale CBE Born March 29th, 1922, Died November 13th , 2014
The Coleshill Post
BY SALLY JONES SIR William Dugdale - universally known as Bill - who has died aged 92 was a colourful Warwickshire landowner and his long, eventful life included decades of service to the Midlands.
Famous for his rollercoaster chairmanship of Aston Villa and careful stewardship of his family’s North Warwickshire estates, he was also a war hero, lawyer, colliery owner, aviator and amateur jockey. He was born in 1922 at Merevale Hall near Atherstone and placed in a drawer. His distinguished family included his namesake, the antiquarian author of the 1656 classic ‘Antiquities of Warwickshire’ and generations of landowners, heralds, mine owners and politicians. The eldest child of Sir William Francis Stratford Dugdale and his wife Margaret Gilmour, Bill and his three siblings grew up at the family’s two great Warwickshire houses, Blyth Hall near Coleshill and Merevale, which was unkindly dubbed “the second ugliest house in Warwickshire”. They enjoyed an adventurous, though strict upbringing at the hands of their implacable nanny Florence Screech “a great believer in ‘spare the rod and spoil the child’” and their “firm disciplinarian” mother. His father who was made a baronet for his shrewd entrepreneurship and good works, successfully expanded Baddesley colliery near Merevale even though his own father had gone down the shaft to rescue entombed miners after a catastrophic explosion in 1882 and was caught in a subsequent blast, dying of his burns 9 days later. Bill Dugdale's father who inherited the estate aged 9 said he never forgot the screams. As a child, Dugdale was proud to be chosen as pageboy to his great-uncle Will in his ceremonial duties as Chancellor of London

University. His joy was short-lived: his uncle, the notorious 7th Earl of Beauchamp, Evelyn Waugh’s model for Lord Marchmain in “Brideshead Revisited”, was publicly outed as a homosexual by political enemies in 1930, stripped of his positions and forced to emigrate. Dugdale went to Eton, then to Balliol College, Oxford in 1940. A member of the Honourable Artillery Company at school, he joined the Oxford Officer Training Corps, the Carlton Club and the Gridiron dining societies. High jinks with his Bullingdon Club friends included a “highly embarrassing” night spent in the cells after being arrested for throwing soot and water over demonstrators (and, by accident, a policeman.) His no-nonsense mother declared “You’d be better fighting than being a civilian”, so Dugdale signed up “after a boozy lunch at the Carlton” and trained at Sandhurst as a Grenadier Guards officer. When World War 2 broke out, he fought bravely in the North African and Italian campaigns, winning the Military Cross thanks to a daring nighttime raid on a German Spandau machine gun post on a Tunisia
The Mayor of Coleshill Cllr Harry Taylor LIKE many local families, mine has its connections to the Dugdale family and particularly Sir William. One of Sir William’s nannies was Nelly Foster, my grandmother, whom he remembered in his recent autobiography ‘Settling the Bill’. She met and married a young gamekeeper who also worked for the Dugdale family, Harry Taylor. The rest, as they say, is history and the passing of Sir William brings to close another chapter of
mountainside in 1943, aged just 21. The machine gun was keeping up constant fire at a height of three feet from a fixed position and Bill and his platoon had to hurdle the hail of bullets then sprint up a dry stream bed before he and two comrades grappled with the two machine gunners and put the post out of action. Afterwards they narrowly escaped as the mountainside erupted with German flak and tracer bullets. Later that year he was Mentioned in Dispatches for his part in successfully defending the Anzio Beachhead, even though he was down to his last 35 men and was his company’s only surviving officer. He later revealed that his Military Cross proved highly effective as a tool for seducing local beauties. Many of his friends were less fortunate and scores were killed in action. Two days before the end of the war, he and his company drove past the bodies of Benito Mussolini and his mistress Clara Petacci, strung up by their ankles in an Esso petrol station. In peacetime Britain, he took over the family estates and regretfully negotiated the compensation when Baddesley colliery was nationalised
our shared local history. In anticipation of a much more in-depth look into the life and times of Sir William in next month’s Post, here is a brief look, in tribute, to the life of Sir William Dugdale. Sir William Dugdale was born 29 March 1922 and was famed for his love of women, horses, fast cars, aeroplanes and even Aston Villa. He gained fame again recently when the rest of the country realised he was Prime Minister David Cameron’s uncle. Like his nephew, Sir William was educated at Eton and went on to Balliol College Oxford University even becoming a member
in 1947. He trained as a solicitor and indulged his taste for thrills as an amateur jockey, riding Cloncarrig in the 1952 Grand National. Later that year, he married the vivacious Lady Belinda Pleydell-Bouverie, daughter of the Earl of Radnor of Longford Castle, Wiltshire, after meeting her on a skiing trip. When Dugdale’s father banned him from race riding, saying it was too dangerous a sport for a married man, the couple began racehorse breeding together and aviation and fast cars particularly Jensens, Mercedes and Allards became his passions. Dugdale was no playboy, however, and devoted much energy to local government, leading the ruling Conservative group on Warwickshire County Council and overseeing the building of Chelmsley Wood and the Collector Road during the Birmingham slum clearances in the 1960s. He was selected as Tory candidate for Oswestry but shelved his political ambitions, when Belinda died tragically young of ovarian cancer in 1961, leaving him with four children under 8. His second marriage two years later to Cylla Mount, the sister of David Cameron’s mother Mary was equally
of the now notorious Bullingdon Club. He left Oxford early to help with the war effort, joining the Grenadier Guards and serving in North Africa, Italy and Germany. He won the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1943 for outstanding bravery under fire and gained the rank of Captain whilst also conquering his fair share of young female Italian hearts on the way. He rode in the Grand National in 1953 and was awarded the C.B.E in 1985. The young future Prime Minister would stay at Blythe Hall regularly as a boy in the 1970s after Sir William married Cameron’s aunt Cylla in 1967 after the sad death of
happy and the couple by now living at Blyth Hall had two more children. Dugdale worked in the water industry for most of his professional life, first as head of the Trent River Board in 1960s and then as a canny and knowledgable chairman of the Severn Trent which he created in 1974 under the new Water Regulation Act. He worked there until, like all public servants in that era, he was forced to retire at 60. Because of his expertise in water, he was then recruited as chairman General Utilities. A lifelong Aston Villa fan, Dugdale became Villa chairman in 1975, and oversaw the appointment of the well-respected manager Ron Saunders and the club’s resurgence from the Third to the First Division. While negotiating striker Andy Gray’s wage demands he was baffled when Gray kept going to the window and making tic-tac signals with his fingers to his agent standing below. “The next time Andy got up,” he recalled, “I went to the other window and leant out, which brought the signalling to an end. We reached agreement soon after.” Dugdale was ousted in 1982 when his predecessor the ruthless Doug Ellis, nicknamed ‘Deadly Doug’, returned as chairman and reputedly sent him a tie embroidered with ’the letters SBE, (“Sacked by Ellis”). In 2011 he published a racy memoir, ‘Settling the Bill.’ Insiders claimed that the best stories had been omitted ‘to protect the guilty!’ A man with a great gift for friendship but little time for political correctness, he made headlines while publicising the book when he complimented a comely female journalist interviewing him in his bedroom at the Ritz, “You’re a pretty girl”, joking that the hotel room encounter made him “feel like Dominique Strauss-Kahn.” Right up to his death Dugdale lost none of his sharp wit or pin-clear recall of momentous events whether on the world stage or in North Warwickshire, where he lived for so much of his long, eventful life. He is survived by his wife Cylla and his six children. His elder son William Matthew Stratford Dugdale succeeds in the baronetcy.
first wife Belinda in 1960. David Cameron used to enjoy shooting on the estate and being taken to watch Aston Villa play when Sir William was chairman of the club from 1975-1982. Sir William presided over Villa’s most successful spell in recent times, winning the League in 1981 and the European Cup in 1982 after which Doug Ellis once more took over. After his chairmanship of Villa, Dugdale joined the board of Severn Trent. More recently in 2011 he published his autobiography ‘Settling the Bill’ detailing his adventurous life and times.

The Railway: Enter a stranger, leave as friends

BY SAMANTHA ROSE Last week we were out for dinner with friends. There were four couples and we had pre-booked. The first thing we noticed on arrival was how clean the bar was.
The mirrors, the bottles and the glasses hanging from the ceiling sparkled and the room is clean and fresh. The Railway has a welcoming feel with a real fireplace and homely décor. The facilities were clean and bright and remained in that condition throughout the evening, showing that they were checked and maintained well. The bartender, Dominic was friendly and helpful and chatted with all patrons. Both owners, Richard and Jess came to say hi, along with their dog, Archie, which also added to the friendly, welcoming atmosphere. Dominic supplied a wine list and gave us time to decide. He served us promptly, checking the glasses were clean before placing them on the bar. They have a good selection of wines and beers at The Railway. One of our party is a big ale drinker. He had a pint of Bombardier which was crystal clear and of exceptional quality.
When requested we were shown to our table which was nicely decorated with a contemporary feel. The waitress, Jemma, was friendly and attentive, taking our orders when we were ready. They insisted on serving our drinks to the table instead of us going to the bar. We ordered a range of starters from a tomato salad with balsamic reduction to chilli lime crab cakes – which were a huge success - and sweet potato soup. We also ordered a range of mains from Hereford steak with enormous homemade onion rings and chips, pork belly on a bed of black pudding mash, while I had a breast of chicken in a mushroom sauce with mash and seasonal vegetables. All meat was cooked just as requested and all plates were left empty. We ordered a whole lobster which received great comments coming from someone who has eaten lobster all over the world. For dessert we ate a cheese board, Eton mess and trifle – again cleaning our plates. Enter a stranger, leave as a friend is the sign above the door and we believe this to be spot on, as we left we felt like friends. We will definitely be making a regular visit to The Railway.

Gardening
First out of Santa's biodegradable and ecofriendly sack are a couple of book suggestions. '1001 Gardens You Must See Before You Die' By Rae Spencer- Jones(pub.Cassell, 2007 & reprinted 2012). Look just accept that you wont see them all but this is still a fascinating book profusely illustrated and will inspire you. On a more serious but still entertaining note, There is 'The Gardens of the British Working Class' by Margaret Willes (pub.Yale University Press, 2014). Most 'histories' of gardening concentrate on the great estates and their celebrity owners and ignore what the 'common people' did. This is highly recommended.
LCH
On a more practical note, how about a subscription? Gift membership of the Royal Horticultural Society costs £54 p.a. For this you get a monthly magazine, 'The Garden@ (which is excellent), free admission for you and a family member to RHS gardens and free access to expert advice. Then theres a years subscription to Garden Organic for £3 (£27 concessions). You will receive the twice yearly magazine, 'The Organic Way', 10% off orders from their extensive seed stock and free admission to Ryton Organic Gardens near Coventry. And the final suggestion? It’s personal recommendation for my favourite garden implement. I don’t like traditional garden trowels – far too cumbersome – so I use a small archaeologist's trowel. Because its pointed it's easy to dig small holes for planting and its simple to use. Go to the website (Google 'Archtools') where you can pick one up for under £10 although a better quality one with a leather holster will still cost you less that £20. If you still can't think of a suitable present, start researching the cost of concrete and Astroturf

Santas Suggestions Well, its that time of year again and once more the old question crops up: “What can I buy the keen gardener who has (or seems to have) everything?” Forget new secateurs or replacing gloves or even those kneeler things that you strap on your legs that cut off the circulation behind your knees! Here are some slightly more original suggestions.

A fantastic effort was made by all, 16 employee’s entered the competition with over 20 different dishes being submitted. We had a range of bakes from Cheesecake, Sausage Plait, Victoria Sponge, Cookies, Pavlova and many more! Members of the local B46 Business team had the tough job of judging the bake off for us, arriving at 10am with empty bellies and ready to judge all of the provided bakes. The judges were Jemma James from Tru Tac (along with her very own mini judges, her twins, Jorge and Jessica.), Penny Sheward from MCD Re-

The task of judging every dish was taken very seriously, the team made notes on presentation, taste and the overall eating experience. The judges were not giving anything away. However mini judges, Jorge and Jess made it obvious they preferred chocolate button toppings over raspberries. After 45mins of taste testing and a filling their tummies, the judges came to the final decision of who should be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for the "Great Office Bake Off ". es of the bake off and commended all the team for their efforts. 1st place went to Jessica Leeson-Kemp for her fabulous Raspberry Pavlova. 2nd place went to Michelle Hoey for her mouth-watering Sausage Plait. 3rd place went to Faye Gallagher for her fluffy Victoria Sponge. A special mention also went to Maria Zervou for her Egg Nog cake, Liam Tuft for his Vanilla & Chocolate Cheese cake, Gary Marriner for his Pineapple Upside Down cake and Matthew Letts’s Chocolate Orange Pudsey the bear cake. After certificates and prizes were handed out, the B46 Business team donated and departed leaving the team to sell off their baked
goods. Everything was sold for 50p per slice and sold like "hot cakes" (excuse the pun). Stock delivery drivers also contributed to donations in exchange for cake helping us to top up the donations. By 4pm most of the cakes and treats had sold, donations were counted, and totalled to £157.50. The company Directors of SilMid Limited also kindly offered to double the amount we had raised which brought us up to the grand total of £315 raised for Children in Need! The bake off was a complete success and enjoyed by all. Same again next year team Sil-Mid…….?

Praise To The Supercar Owners Today while working, minding my own business with my head under a bonnet, something happened that only a Petrolhead can explain or appreciate.
In the distance I heard a very brief noise and immediately I could feel the hairs on my neck stand up and a smile wash across my face. It was the sound of a Ferrari V8, albeit one sitting in a Maserati chassis, it still had the sound to make me immediately stop what I was doing and just walk towards it like moths to a light. There’s something fascinating how a lump of metal can light up all your senses, a burble from the exhausts to the smell of Italian leather, it all amounts to a wonderful sense of occasion that you just can’t ignore and I’m quite certain I’m not alone. A good few years ago I was in Lancaster nursing a hangover with a
Weatherspoon’s all day breakfast. Full of coffee and grease we exited to the sight of a Pagani Zonda (Pictured) parking right in front of us. Two things passed through my mind immediately, I had obviously paid too much for my meal and should I be this excited about getting close to a Zonda. The second was answered within 30 seconds as people were running from one end of the high street towards us while shouting down their phones. Within 3 minutes hundreds of people had gathered around the car taking photos and pointing at every little detail they could see. The whole experience was finished with an almighty “OOOOOOO” from the hundreds of bystanders as the owner opened the engine bay and was then quickly moved on by the police. That day I realised the owners of these cars aren’t showing off, but
letting us normal people see and experience some of life’s luxury’s and technical masterpieces. The day a Ferrari or Lamborghini races you off the lights or has a bit of fun on the road with you, just remember it has cost him a fortune to do so. These things are a ticking time bomb waiting to explode into mortgage sized bills for their owners. I knew a Lamborghini
owner and one day while driving, his clutch exploded. Two weeks later and a £3000 bill, his car was all ready and was immediately put in storage as it was too expensive to run as an almost daily driver. A year and a half later he jumped into his supercar to sell it and found the clutch had seized up from standing too long and had to pay it all again.
FREE WINTER CHECK
This is the thing about these cars, there pointless on a practical point of view, useless when it comes to reliability and just obnoxious with running costs, so the next time you see an exotic car driving down the road, appreciate the car and then if possible thank the driver for taking the monumental task of owning and driving it for us to have our 10 seconds of OOOOOOOO.

Canine Care

I
The reality is you are taking on a baby animal which relies on you to teach it how to understand the world. 1 in 6 puppies are not with their original owners by the time they are 4 years old. Dogs are handed into rescue centres on a daily basis due to their owners finding they are no longer suitable for their lives some of these dogs are still puppies. Many are around 12 months old, this is when the once cute puppy has grown and may not be behaving due to lack of attention, training and exercise. However not all dogs that
find themselves in rescue are their due to “bad behaviour”. Changes in owners living arrangements, bad health, lack of money, allergies, lack of time and space are just a few of the reasons given. I found giving a home to a 3 year old rescue dog extremely rewarding. My other dog has been with me since he was a young puppy. If I had to choose which I would do again then I would always rescue an older dog. I Know puppies are enchanting little beings. They’re funny and cute and full of promise. But puppies, like all babies, need a lot of care and attention. Puppies turn into adolescents at lightning speed. That
babyish fur ball you bring home will turn all legs, ears, nose, and energy in no time. I think most first time puppy owners are shocked by the amount of time, love, effort and patience they take. I am not for one minute saying that older dogs don’t need that also, they do - but just in a different way. When you choose an adult dog, you have more of an idea of what you’re getting. You can see its physical traits and get some idea of its basic temperament, even though dogs in rescues may not always show their true personality right away most will improve and blossom once settled into
a loving home. If you are concerned that an older dog won’t bond to you, don’t be. Dogs are remarkably resilient and openhearted. Some completely overcome their pasts in a matter of days; others may take a few weeks or months, and some of them carry a little baggage for even longer than that. Working with your dog will help overcome any hurdles necessary to enjoy your new life. If you are considering owning a dog or adding to your pack ensure to explore all the options available to you. Owning a dog can be an incredibly rewarding experience — and result in a long-term, loving relationship.
We are a small licensed day care centre set in a beautiful countryside location and pride ourselves in offering a friendly, caring environment for your dog. The centre is run by a handful of staff which means the dogs get to know us all really well. All dog friendly canines of every shape and size are welcome with open arms. Our aim is to provide a home from home for your dog. If you need to go to work or your are off out for the day or just want your dog to have fun and socialise in a safe environment, our day care centre can provide your dog with hours of care and love. We also have a wide variety of toys and play/agility equipment that keep them entertained for hours. The Licensed kennels on site can board dogs over night if needed and customers have the added bonus of combining both services. During the day the dogs get full access to our indoor and outdoor areas. They choose whether to lounge on the sofas and beds inside or run and play outside. Through the summer months they have air conditioning inside, paddling pools outside and lots of natural shade. In the winter the heating is on but most choose to run around with their friends outside. Some days they get a little muddy but we always do our best to send them home clean. It is lovely to see the excited faces heading down the path towards us every day. For Further Information please visit www.daycarefordogs.org or find us on Facebook. M6 Island Streetlights mystery solved In response to a letter published in the October edition of The Coleshill Post about the streetlights around the M6 Junction 4 Island staying on 24 hours a day, County Councillor Peter Fowler has been in touch with an update. Cllr Fowler is aware of the situation and confirms that the lights in question are the responsibility of the Highways Agency.
After liaising with both Warwickshire County Council and The Highways Agency Cllr Fowler discovered that the problem lies with a faulty connection and work to remedy the problem has begun, week commencing 17th November. Understanding Reflexology
The aid of reflexology is the restoration of a state of equilibrium and balance within the body. If a person is to be healthy, all systems of the body must work together in harmony. If any part is out of alignment, other parts suffer as a consequence. The feet have a special relationship with the body: there are 7,200 nerve endings present in the feet that Interconnect with every part of the body. By applying a specific pressure massage it is possible to stimulate or calm underactive/overactive areas respectively, to cleanse and to revitalise. The treatment is for one hour with full medical consultation, for an appointment please call: 01675 466550

Darren beat 210 competitors from across the UK and Ireland in the event run by his employer and supply chain solutions provider, Wincanton, participating in a series of challenges designed to put his driving skills to the test, assessing everything from manoeuvrability to spatial awareness. The annual Driver of the Year showcases the talent in the Wincanton fleet and rewards the skills of its drivers. This year’s event marked the 10th anniversary of the competition. Speaking after the event, Darren said: “Most people don’t realise the level of knowledge and expertise needed to drive a forklift truck in a busy warehouse at night. The Driver of the Year event is a great way
to demonstrate our talents and celebrate the skills of our workforce”. Wincanton also crowned its Large Goods Vehicle Driver of the Year, Matthew Lewis, and offered prizes for a team event that tested the collaboration between its forklift truck and LGV teams. The futures bright for Sunwise UVA
The Coleshill Post
What is RGN?
THE Warwickshire Rural Growth Network provides free business support to businesses and individuals looking to start their own business, in rural Warwickshire.
Warwickshire County Council has been selected by DEFRA, as one of five counties in England to run this new pilot business support programme focusing on rural areas. You will be given a dedicated business coach, who will work with you to develop a bespoke action plan, to launch a new business or kick start business growth. You and your business coach will work through your journey, to achieve your goals. To discuss this opportunity further, please do contact us on either 07768 390148 or 07920 563781.
James Westley, Owner of Sunwise UVA Ltd met with Rita Booth, business coach for Warwickshire Rural Growth Network in November 2013. At this point, James had a business idea to develop a sun-safe clothing range for children and adults.
The business idea came about due to James’ wife having a skin condition caused by sensitivity to UVA and UVB light. Sunwise UVA Ltd received a blend of one-to-one coaching and financial support from Warwickshire Rural Growth Network, to help develop the product range and an e-commerce (website shop) platform. This support has provided Sunwise UVA Ltd with an opportunity to develop business strategies, marketing knowledge, as well as understanding the retail sector in depth. James and Rita met to discuss the business idea and agreed a plan of action to move this business idea into an established business status. It was clear that this business needed a combination of expertise to help develop a unique product range and a strong brand, as well as better understanding of e-commerce and the retail sector.
Based on the High Street we offer a friendly, professional service
Tel: 01675 466344 Fax: 01675 466559
Following an initial diagnostic review of the business idea, James and Rita worked together to set-up Sunwise UVA Ltd. During that meeting, James and Rita agreed an action plan that focused on prioritising each step of this process and the tasks required within each step. The steps have included developing a business model that links e-commerce sales to business need and marketing opportunities that drive people back to the dedicated website. The first step in the process was to design a clothing range suitable for children and adults. By engaging the services of a young designer in the UK and manufacturer expertise, James was able to take a hands-on approach to design, creating patterns and clothing that met his exact requirements. With the support of an off-shore manufacturer, James has been able to establish his first order of each product in various sizes for children and adults. Rita also supported Sunwise UVA Ltd through the Warwickshire Rural Growth Network’s start-up grant application
process. This grant gave Sunwise UVA Ltd an opportunity to work with a website developer, to develop a bespoke e-commerce shop that links sales to stock, as well as offering a strong communications platform to help the business communicate its close links with sun related causes. James was adamant from the start that the web site should be easy to navigate and shows costs extremely clearly. With the professional support and guidance from business coach, Rita Booth, Sunwise UVA Ltd has developed a strong business model for growth and success. This is an exciting time for the Sunwise UVA Ltd, whose web site has just gone live. www.sunwiseuva.co.uk Please do contact Warwickshire Rural Growth Network to see how we may help you by visiting www.warwickshiregov.uk/ ruralgrowthnetwork . “Working with Rita from the WRGN has been a great boost.” James Westley, Director, Sunwise UVA Ltd
Drive Electric: Warks Rural Electric Vehicle project extended!
ELECTRIC vehicles (EVs) are proving an ideal solution for those Warwickshire rural businesses with low daily mileage journey routines.
EVs (cars and vans) provide an excellent opportunity to save transport fuel costs whilst driving with no exhaust emissions. The comfort and driving performance of the latest electric vehicles is proving attractive too! Electric vans are also now entering the market with much improved mileage range and Greenwatt is pleased to announce additional funding to enable a further 5 businesses to benefit from the scheme and lease an electric van. Warwickshire Rural Electric Vehicle project (WREV) – providing grant funding as an incentive for companies to trial an EV for 2 years. More than 20 businesses with rural postcodes have already been provided with a free feasibility study to determine the practicalities and financial case for the deployment of EVs. From these ‘business assists’, 10 Warwickshire businesses have been awarded a grant as contribution towards 2-year con-
tract hire costs of an EV, offered eco-driving training to maximise driver performance and provided with charge points installed on their business premises. This offer is now extended to electric vans. Interest in the project has come from a wide range of businesses across the County with activities including farming, tourism, local deliveries, business services, electrical services and car maintenance. Reviews carried out show that EVs can provide significant savings on business transport costs (fuel, road tax, maintenance) - as well as bringing environmental benefits through zero exhaust emissions. This is a Defra-funded Rural Growth Network project which Warwickshire County Council leads for the Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise Partnership. The project is managed by Greenwatt Technology – low carbon transport consultants based in Alcester, South Warwickshire. For further information and details of the WREV Project, please contact Greenwatt Technology on transport@greenwatt.co.uk or by telephone 01789 761367.

Blythe Electrical embraces new technology BUSINESS
We are seeing vastly improved LED light fittings for our homes, much more efficient and far more effective, and we are now beginning to see the new wave of technology for our cars – the Electric Vehicle. What once seemed like a ‘new-age’ gimmick for the next generation, the Electric Vehicle is taking its place amongst homes and businesses in Coleshill. We are already starting to fit electric vehicle sockets for homes in and around Coleshill, and the local businesses too are installing them for customers and staff. At the beginning of September 2014, the Government launched a scheme to help private plugin vehicle owners offset some of the upfront cost of purchasing and installing a dedicated domestic charging unit. Households could receive up to 75% (capped at £900, including VAT) off the total capital costs of a chargepoint, plus associated installation costs. However, the grant can only be accessed by householders who own or have regular access to an eligible plug-in vehicle. For more details about this, you should refer to the government website as follows: https://www.gov.uk/government/ publications/electric-vehicle-homecharge-schemeguidelines-for-households However, homeowners need to be aware that in order to benefit from the scheme, Installers need to be approved by the chargepoint manufacturer before installation can take place, and have completed the required training course for installation.

The Coleshill School
News and events
The Coleshill Post
Warwickshire Children’s University By Mrs Robinson Assistant Headteacher As a new Assistant Headteacher at The Coleshill School, I am thrilled to be introducing Year 7 to a new opportunity!
We aim for all of our Year 7 students to be enrolled in the Children’s University. This is an exciting project that reflects our vision of students learning beyond the classroom and having aspirations to be the best they can be. The programme will be co-ordinated by Miss Rollason, teacher of Science and STEM co-ordinator at The Coleshill School assisted by four student leaders, who have already shown clear leadership skills: Beauchamp house- Charlotte Vervoort Greville House - James Halliday Newburgh House - Kate Lewis Dudley House - Kane Murray. The children were introduced to the programme in an assembly and are excited about the chance to get stamps for after school activities and also activities that they can complete with their families. The programme for activities will be listed on our school website, but include all of the following: • Jaguar Maths in motion • Christmas cookie club • Gardening club
• Technology • STEM club • Football • Netball • Trampolining • Rugby • Catering • Night at the museum • Poetry workshops With all of these activities on offer in school, every student should be able to complete 30 hours of ‘study’ in their chosen specialism. This will allow them to graduate with a Bronze award at the end of Year 7. Some students may go even further and go for Silver (60 hours) or even Gold (100 hours). So if your child is in Year 7, log on to: www.childrensuniversity.co.uk and encourage them to get involved!
Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) Club Launches By Miss Rollason Teacher of Science and STEM Coordinator THE autumn term 2014 has seen the launch of the STEM club at The Coleshill School. This has already shown to be massively popular with students attending from Year 7 up to Year 13 on a regular basis. The club has done all kinds of exciting activities this term: from designing and launching rockets, carrying out a forensic investigation and designing the ultimate bubble! We have even had a session where students evaluated the mathematical basis behind calculating how
much energy is in the snacks we eat, and which is better for us to keep us going from breakfast through the break time. This also involved setting these food types alight to measure how quick-ly they could heat up a known mass of water, similar to how they release energy inside our bodies. Some students have also had the opportunity to lead activities, including two of our Year 13 biology stu-dents teaching the younger years how to carry out an A Level investigation. There is still plenty more to do, to try and to investi-gate with projects to take part in and competitions to compete in next term! All students are welcome to attend from all year groups – Monday 3.20 – 4pm in A10.
Armistice Day The Basketfield Brothers BY OLIVIA WORRINGHAM
A
rmistice Day is a day dedicated to remembering the soldiers that have gone to war and still are on behalf of us with the intent to fight for our country. Currently, at the Tower of London, 888,246 poppies lay as a memorial to remember the fallen soldiers. Each poppies represents a soldier from the First World War. It’s a must see when visiting London and its truly breath-taking. The Poppies memorial has been designed by the artist Paul Cummins and put together by thousands of volunteers and has been designed with the intention of creating a ‘See of Blood Swept lands and Seas of ref installation’. A campaign has been made to keep the poppies up for a further 12 months later than the original plan of removing them on 11th November. Of those 888,246 soldiers, 132 were from here in Coleshill and Simon Toon, a local citizen, has put together a website commemorating all of the fallen heroes of our town. An interesting story surrounds the Basketfield brothers who were both Coleshill residents back in 1892. There were three brothers who were all ranked Privates: Herbert, the oldest born 1892, William Ernest, born 1894, and Arthur Olivier, born 1897. All three brothers passed in a different way and died within two years of each other. The eldest, Herbert died the exact same date yet two years on of Arthur, the youngest, who was killed on 27th October 1916. The story of the Basketfield brothers is a truly sad one at that. Arthur Oliver, the youngest brother worked as a ‘waggoner boy’ before enlisting into the Great War in 1915, died first of the brothers on 27th October 1916 due to the explosion of a shell in his trench, aged just 19, an excerpt of the letter written from his Commanding Officer to his family is below. “I write with deep regret to inform you
that your son, Private A. O. Basketfield (15389), of this battalion, lost his life on October 27th. The part of the trench line where he was was very heavily shelled by the enemy, and one shell burst right in the trench, killing your son and some others immediately. There could have been no moment of pain for him. The battalion miss your boy, for he had won a name and place for himself, and was doing well. He will not easily be replaced, and to you his loss will be irreparable indeed. Please accept my warmest sympathy, and that of this battalion. Your boy was buried where he died, and a careful record of the place is being kept. The deceased joined the army when he was seventeen years of age. After his training he was sent out to France, and has been abroad about fifteen months. He has been to Salonica, the Dardanelles, the Gallipoli Peninsula, Egypt, and back to France, where he gave his life for his country.” “Somewhere in France our dear one lies, In a grave we can never see, On Britain’s roll of honour There we know his name will be.” – Wrote by Mary Basketfield, wrote in Coleshill Chronicle on the date of 27th October 1917. Second of the brothers to lose their life at war was William Basketfield, who died 11th October in 1917. He died after being wounded in ten places after going out to France on 29t September 1916 and met his death in France 11th October 1917. Last of the brothers to pass was Herbert Basketfield, the youngest of the three. After Enlisting in 1914, Private Basketfield was killed on 27 October 1918, exactly 24 months after his brother Arthur and 12 months after his brother William. William died in action when wadding through the Piave River, Italy and crawling under barbed wire when caught in heavy gunfire. He is buried at Tezze a British cemetery in Italy. More information on all 132 (known) war veterans can be found on Simon Toon’s website: www. Stitwarwickshire.uk/ ColeshillRemembersWW1.php

Eleven English Literature students from The Coleshill 6th Form, who are in the process of studying the text as part of their A-Level coursework, had the opportunity to experience Wilde's most prestigious play with their teacher, Miss Oberg. The evening
was filled with laughter as people of all ages enjoyed the show. Craig Turner, an English Literature student, explained “seeing the play really brought the text to life and it has really helped me to visualise Wilde's intentions”. Throughout the play, all students were able to link aspects of their coursework with aspects of the text, a task that will help greatly when it comes to completing the exam. Paige Briscoe explained “the humour of the text was really brought out in the play, creating an exciting atmosphere amongst the audience”. The play did not disappoint, and elicited a very favourable review from all students, Miss Oberg and even the critics!

The Coleshill School
News and events Remembrance Day at The Coleshill School Tuesday 11 November 2014
Our displays went on show for all to see and the theme of our assemblies all week being about Remembrance. We were honoured to be asked to print the order of service for the service of Remembrance at Coleshill Parish Church on Sunday the 9th of November where Mr Smith-Childs, Head of The Coleshill School also read the poem, “For the fallen” by Robert Laurence Binyon. Our Head boy, William Moore and Head Girl, Brooke Tarrant also read the poem “Dear Jessie” by Richard Monty Daniel and then laid our poppy wreath in remembrance of our ‘Old boys who lost their lives in WW1,
WW2 and in Afghanistan. It was a touching and emotional experience at The Coleshill School for everyone on Tuesday 11th November when we all came together to remember! Prior to the Remembrance service in the main school hall our visitors gathered round the 150 red clay poppies situated in the picnic area of the school, where poems were read by Jack Palmer and Lauren Sutheran, year 11 students, to commemorate and pay tribute to the ‘old boys’ of The Coleshill School. The display and atmosphere was breathtaking. Our Remembrance Service was led by Mr SmithChilds and our Sixth Form Student Leaders who read out the list of previous students of the school whose lives were lost during the Great Wars. We also remembered Private Cecil John Kinross, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery and also James Munday who was killed in Afghanistan in 2008. The one minute silence was an extremely poignant moment for all concerned as was the playing of the last post. The mere fact that so many people had crowded into one room in order to pay their respects and give a few minutes of their time was really very emotional indeed!
Guests at the service also included:• Mr Tom Wilson who was headmaster of the school between 1956 and 1983, • Councillor Harry Taylor, Mayor of Coleshill • Mr John Hoyle who is a former senior teacher of the school and a member of The Civic Society • Councillor Peter Courts, a Governor of The Coleshill Grammar School Foundation, • The Reverend Becky Stephens, • Mr Dewi Jones, Chair of Governors, • Mr David Anderson, Community Governor, • Mrs Marian Parkinson and Mrs Margaret Beaty whose relative, Private Cecil John Kinross, attended The Coleshill Grammar school from 1904 until 1912 and then served with the Canadian 49th Infantry Battalion. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his distinct act of bravery and we were honoured to have welcomed them to join us at our special Remembrance Service this year.

We Will Remember Them!
Our Remembrance Day preparations started a little earlier this year with the making of 150 red clay poppies by our Year 7 students and staff assisted with the guidance of Mrs Whitehouse and Mrs Pudge. This was a project which was inspired by the poppy installation at the Tower of London and brought about and put together by the Art Department and our Site Team.

Water Orton Carnival Black Tie Ball & Golf Day
The Coleshill Post
Water Orton Carnival Committee’s Black Tie Ball and Golf Day took place on Saturday 4th October and was a great success once again, with both events held at West Midlands Golf Club at Barston Lakes. The evening included a three course meal followed up by a live band and a fabulous time was had by all, whilst at the same time raising valuable funds towards the sustaining of the Carnival and as contingency for bad weather. Did you miss out? Tickets sold out very quickly with the 200 maximum soon reached and the Committee are aware that there were quite a few people who wanted to come but unfortunately missed out. Because of this, for 2015’s event they are keen to give as many people as possible the chance to come to either the Ball, the Golf Day, or both, so they may have to consider holding it at a bigger venue. 2015’s Golf Day & Ball To help them to make this decision and help you to make sure you don’t miss out, the Committee are asking you to register your interest on their website, waterorton-
carnival.co.uk so that they can decide on what size venue is required. They are also hoping to make the tickets available for purchase online, on a strictly first come, first served basis which will give everyone the same chance to get hold of a ticket The event is planned to be on Saturday 9th May – so nowhere near as long to wait as last time! The cost for the ball is £39 per head (to include a 3 course meal and a live band) whilst the Golf Day will be also be £39 (to include a bacon roll and coffee on registration). Dress code for the ball is black tie for the gents and ‘dress to impress’ for the ladies - the perfect excuse for a new outfit! Best of all, there’s no need to worry about how you’re getting there and back, because you can be collected from either The Digby or The Dog and dropped back at the same place at the end of the evening at an additional cost (to be confirmed. The golf day and the black tie ball are separate events, so you can come to either, or both if you r go to next year’s Carnival or other good causes in the village. The Coleshill Post
Calum Cooper- All or Nothing On Tuesday 7th October, the news that Calum Cooper had retired filtered through the various social networks. It came as a surprise as the 26 year-old was only eleven fights into his career, yet in the three years that Cooper has punched for pay he has competed in PrizeFighter, crossed swords with the Olympic 2012 team captain Tom Stalker, became Midland champion in the champions back garden and then defended it on home soil in what has to be a shoe-in for Fight of the Year. However, his last fight with Marcus Ffrench was a gruelling contest and one that took its toll on the champion. At a time when he was looking increasingly in control, the southpaw buzz-saw walked onto a booming shot from his stocky opponent in the ninth round and was in dire straits. He held on frantically, punching whenever he could but at this stage his shots had nothing on them. He miraculously got through the round but was forced to endure a further shellacking in the tenth when Ffrench once again made a desperate charge at success. Cooper managed to end the fight on his feet, and was awarded a 96-94 decision victory from referee Robert Chalmers. Even as Cooper was being presented with his belt, the exhaustion was clear and it wasn’t short-lived. “Back in the dressing room my sponsors . mrs etc “I was completely out of it for a good three weeks. My friends were saying I looked drunk like I wasn’t on this planet!” Couldn’t drive to work The Ffrench bout took place on Promoter Tommy Owens’ show in June as the Aston Villa Football club, and immediately after the verdict fans were quick to call for a rematch. Jon Pegg, manager of both Cooper and Ffrench was quick to dismiss any such talk, claiming that there simply wasn’t enough money in the bout to justify the two close friends knocking lumps out of each other again. Interestingly they had tangled back in March 2010 in the Birmingham region of the senior ABA’s, and in a bout which eerily mirrors the later version – Cooper again was victorious in a close fight on points having stood up to the powerful bombs of Ffrench and even suffering a standing count in the last round. Over the summer, it was announced that Calum’s first defence was going to be against Walsall’s undefeated Luke “Cool Hand” Paddock on PJ Rowson’s 24th October show at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall on a show featuring the come-back of the second city’s Frankie Gavin. However, training was far from ideal for the champion. “My back went on me, which wasn’t helpful. So I had to take a week off with that. Then I had my medicals and Jon phoned me to tell me that there had been a slight problem with the brain-scan and that they wanted me to see a specialist but in the meantime I couldn’t spar. I said ‘that’s no good,
I’ve got three weeks to get ready!’” “I didn’t want to tell my Mrs because I knew she’d panic – but I had to! We had a tearful conversation, and she said “Calum, I’m begging you not to do this anymore. That Ffrench fight did something to you!” “She said “You seem half-soaked, and I said that’s just me in general!”” he laughed. Cooper had always been into boxing, and saved up £5 as a child which he would offer to his friends if they could knock him out, he doesn’t remember ever being bested by one of his friends but the £5 is long gone. His mother would watch him building boxing rings in the back garden and remembers being told by her son that he was going to be a champion and box on the telly. When Cooper was a teenager, he was falling into the usual traps before his mothers boyfriend whom he had barely met (John is now is step-father), decided to take him to a local boxing gym This is when he struck up a relationship with Gary Blowe of Studio ABC. I miss training already. The buzz of it. I’m not disappointed, but I wish I could have done more. I’m happy where I got to, but my aim was always to the top. Stand in the ring, cictorious with a belt; a dream come true. But do I wish I could have done more? Yeah I do. I spoke to Jon and he said that my health was the most important factor. I made a promise to my family to walk away – but never say never. That animal is still inside of me. If the hunger doesn’t go away, then we’ll have to see... I used to miss going the pub with the lads, having a decent meal, eating my ice-cream! But now I can have all of that, I miss the restrictions. Getting up early to have my porridge, morning runs, getting to the gym on time. I was very disheartened after the Chad Gaynor defeat – Jon said we’d move down to light welter, those boys were giants compared to me. Unsworth was my best night, I was thinking agter PF have I lost it? Am I no good anymore?? They got me Lee Connelly before that and told me that he wasn’t a warm-up fight, that this kid comes to fight and comes to win. 3 weeks later I fought Amir and was deadest on winning – there was no way I was going out without that belt. I fought my heart out for ten rounds and beat him in his own backyard – I couldn’t miss him at one point. The moment the last round ended I said to Jon Pegg – get my gloves off, I want to hold my belt! Completely different against John-Wayne Hibbert. My eldest was in and out of hospital, having problems, training was going terrible and sparring was going even worse. My mind wasn’t on the job. I pulled out but they told me that it was a big op-
portunity and that I might not get another one. So I took it. Hibbert is one hell of a fighter, and I’m proud to say that I hurt him in the fourth round with a body-shot. I’d love to fight Hibbert again but not because I think I can beat him, but because I want to know what happens when I meet him fully fit and at my best! Tyler was born three weeks before the Stalker bout – so proud fighting in front of a live audience against the Olympic captain. He’s not the hardest hitter but his speed and footwork is phenomenal. Jon said that they were looking to set that fight up, and even then Jon called it. He said it was going to be a fight of the year candidate. If the score had gone the other was that night I coudn’t have complained. Marcus madethat fight and he shocked me. After 4, 6 rounds I thought he would have punched himself out trying to land a big shot, I thought I’d be taking over. But he was in my face from the first round until the last. He was the star that night! I switched off for a second and he made me pay. I thought “For Gods sake, grab him!” I don’t remember a thing from the tenth round! Sponsors were talking to me afterwards and I didn’t have a clue. Hopefully we get this award “Just want to wish a lad who I went to war with for 10 gruelling rounds all the very best in the future, a true gent!” – Amir Unsworth “My toughest opponent so far, one of the nicest lads in the ring and I wish him all the best in whatever he chooses to do” – Marcus Ffrench “He will be missed in Midland boxing! If you was in the audience watching him then you knew you would be in for a great fight. If you was in the opposite corner to him (I have twice) and lost, then you knew your fighter had better be strong minded, have a big heart, have balls of steel and be 110% fit. Because if your boxer lacked one of the above then you are in for a beating. I always use him in my speeches in the gym to inspire my boxers. Gave it all in the ring. Top man, top boxer!” – Paul “Soggy” Counighan (Ffrench’s coach) “Calum is the kind of kind of boxer that would come back from a war with a chest full of medals. Insanely brave, insanely tough and a thirst for battle that belies his quiet demeanour. A true champ!” – Jon Pegg “Calum was superb that night against Amir. He was so fit, so fast – the only thing he really lacked was a punch, but he beat Amir from pillar to post. He was a southpaw but not an awkward one, he’d always come to fight. Against John Wayne HIbbert, I think that was Calum’s hardest night. Although he did hurt Wayne in the middle rounds with a body shot” – Carl Greaves “What a shame, he’s a lovely kid and tough as nails. I wish Calum all the best in his future, and will always remember our 8-round scrap!” – Thomas Stalker, 2012 Olympic Captain
Couinhan Overcomes Hugarian Puncher Birmingham’s Antonio Counihan continued his quest without a British license on Saturday 25th October with a third-round stoppage over Hungarian puncher Janos Vass. The unbeaten Brummie stretched his impressive record to 4-0 (3) in front of a large vocal Birmingham contingent who had travelled to the York Hall in Bethnal Green to watch their man perform. Originally down to box Simas Volosinas, it was going to provide a good marker for Counihan having travelled to these shores before to test several other of our prospects, even shocking unbeaten prospect Paul Holt last time out. However, Volosinas pulled out to challenge Luke Paddock for the International Silver Masters belt the day before leaving Counihan searching for another opponent. Dave Murphy, who promotes via a Maltese license managed to find Vass who of his six wins had knocked out five of his opponents – but he was put onto the back-foot early by Counihan who was quick to start letting his hands go in two-fisted blitzes. For such a fast boxer, Counihan is very patient and would always wait and faint his way in before attacking. Vass’ legs appeared to be letting him down as he clumsily waked backwards and out of harms way – but danger was never far behind him as the Brummie was proactive in cutting the ring off. It soon became apparent that even though Vass had a punchers record, he was going to prove little threat to Counihan on this night as every time he was hit cleanly he seemed to buckle. The inevitable end came in the third when the referee intervened after 1 minute 50 seconds with Vass once again being continually wobbled. Counihan dedicated the victory to his Nan, and there was a classy moment from Robin Deakin who was sat ringside as he got a t-shirt from one of Counihan’s fans and passed it up to Antonio for him to wear in the ring. Deakin was Counihan’s debut opponent. It will be an interesting progression for Counihan from this point, himself boxing under a Maltese license. He only has limited options in Britain as he cannot box on any shows sanctioned by the British Boxing Board of Control and therefore cannot box for any of the titles that they offer. With the BBBC keen to penalise any license holders who also box on these shows, it limits Counihan to his opposition – and is likely to keep facing foreign imports for the foreseeable future. His team may have to look abroad to further Counihan’s progression before long.

Boxing
FRANKIE Gavin returned to winning ways on a PJ Rowson promoted show at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall on the 24th October.
The slick southpaw had lost a contentious decision here last time out to the undefeated European Champion Leonard Bundu but there was no signs of lasting damage as Gavin easily overcame Hungary’s Mate Hornyak. Gavin was cheered to the ring by his fans, but it was noticeably quieter than the rousing reception that greeted him here last time out for the biggest fight of his professional career. There was a delay in getting the fight started when Hornyak didn’t have the correct gloves and it took a short while to find the correct pair, soon enough they were both down to action. Hornyak is a tall and slender boxer, noticeably in the Bradley Skeete mould whom is lined up next for a crack at the Brummie’s Lonsdale belt. Gavin [9st 13lb 12oz] likes to play a game called “eat the jab” where he forces his opponent to continue to eat leather delivered from his stiff right, and found the Hungarian a willing dinner guest as he was constantly forced to swallow jab after jab while Gavin dipped and targeted the teenagers long body for his long left-hands. It wasn’t long into the second where Gavin quickly found his rhythm and quickly the enormity of the gulf in
class was evident. Hornyak [9st 6lb 8oz] was downed by a right hook to the body but managed to drag himself to his feet for referee Shaun Messer’s count of 8. Gavin smelt blood and went steaming back in with a two-fisted assault which moments later again left Hornyak in a heap on the floor, prompting Messer to end proceedings after 2minutes 37 seconds of the second of a scheduled 8. It was an easy night’s work for Gavin, certainly an easier one than the Skeete defence on the 29th but it was a nice run out for him in front of his local fans and should rekindle some confidence that the Bundu bout may have knocked from him. Gavin is now 20-1 while Hornyak dips to 12-4-1. In a bout with no real highlights, Luke Paddock [9st 13lb] became the International Silver Masters Champion and is now 8-0 with a 100-91 verdict for referee Shaun Messer over Lithuania’s Simas Volosinas [9st 6lb 8oz]. One had to feel sorry for Paddock, who had seen both Calum Cooper and Chris Truman pull out in Midland title fights before been given this assignment for the less prestigious Masters strap. Volosinas was coming off a one-punch knockout of top Birmingham prospect Paul Holt the month before, but showed little ambition here as Paddock controlled him from the off behind an educated jab and fired in enough right hands to
discourage his opponent. Volosinas finished with both eyes badly bruised and hopefully a Midland title fight can be organised for Paddock next. Alongside Frankie Gavin, another boxer warming up for a bout on the big 29th bill was Redditch’s Andy “D’Animal” Robinson who has a the tough task of taking on big-punching Frank Buglioni. On this night, Robinson [12st 3lb 10oz] came through a surprisingly quiet bout with Derby’s Elvis Dube [12st 12lb 5oz]. This one stood out on paper as Robinson is rarely ever in a bad fight and has an exciting style while Dube is a thickly-set durable puncher but never really caught fire throughout as Robinson was happy to dominate behind his faster jabs and preserving himself for his November test. It looked as though Dube was happy to see the contest out on his feet but was suddenly hurt in the sixth and last round by a left hand to the body and dropped to his haunches. He made it up but was clearly distressed and dropped shortly after by another barrage signalling referee Gareth Morris’ intervention after 1 minute 43 seconds of the round. Robinson improves to 13-0 while Dube is now 6-29-2 Best fight of the night came in the six-round show-opener when Derby’s Craig Wilshee [12st 2lb 14oz]improved his record to 4-0 with a fourthround stoppage of Stoke on Trent’s Mark Till [12st 2lb]. Till brought plen-
ty of ambition and regularly took advantage of his undefeated opponent’s leaky defence - catching him with clean and heavy-looking shots before Wilshee would respond with volleys of hooks and uppercuts. The end came about in the fourth when a left uppercut dropped Till heavily in a neutral corner. Till clambered to his feet at 9 but Gareth Morris deemed him in no position to continue after 2 minutes 27 seconds. Till is now a misleading 2-10-1. Des Bowater was awarded a 59-55 decision over Stockport’s Jamie Quinn but was made to work hard for his victory. Bowater (9st 5lb 2oz] was caught clean repeatedly by his spritely opponent but managed to nullify him with an effective work-rate. Quinn [9st 6lb 14oz] seemed to land more and more as time went by, and managed to walk the Wolverhampton fighter onto a massive right hand in the fifth though Bowater simply laughed at him. He got the decision from Gareth Morris on this night, but Bowater will have to tighten his defence and he moves up the rankings. Bowater improves to 6-0 while Quinn is now 1-4. Tommy Langford also kept his unbeaten record in tact with a six-round pounding of Surrey’s Gary Boulden. Boulden [11s 6lb 5oz] didn’t bring much ambition – but it probably wouldn’t have made too much difference as the taller Langford [11st 6lb 14oz] started positively from the off,
working behind a nice jab. Boulden emerged from a clinch in the first with a cut high on his scalp which immediately began to mat his hair with blood – it didn’t become a problem throughout the fight though. For a fighter so tall and rangy, it seems Langford is equally efficient at boxing behind his jab at length or in close where he would bully Boulden with barrages of spiteful bodyshots. The Surrey man began to look a bit sorry for himself as time went on and Langford buzzed him repeatedly en route to a 60-54 verdict handed down by Shaun Messer. Langford is now 11-0 and Boulden 7-16-2. Daniel Breeze [11st 8lb 8oz] sold a lot of tickets for his third pro bout and sent his very vocal fans home happy after a four round routing of the Chzech-Republic’s out-of shape Jan Balog [11st 13lb]. While southpaw Balog doesn’t look like much with his stomach bulging over his shorts, he is a crafty operator who lets his fists go with some speed when he wants to. Still, it was not enough to keep off his teenage opponent who seemed to enjoy every second of this bout – going to head and body efficiently and even doing a little showboating as it became clear he was not going to come unstuck on this night. Breeze improves to 3-0 while Balog a more seasoned 8-21-1.

The Coleshill Post - November 2014- Issue 16
@ColeshillPost The Coleshill Post
Coleshill Cricket Club inspired for a new era at Memorial Park IN this edition of the Coleshill Post, we feature one of Coleshill’s oldest sports clubs, Coleshill Cricket Club. The Club established in 1854, are proudly based at the Memorial Park Sports Centre and play their matches at Memorial Park. The club runs three sides on Saturdays in the Warwickshire Cricket League. In 2014, the Club’s 1st XI played in Division 1, 2nd XI in the Premier and 3rd XI in Single Team Div 2 East. The Club also played in the Lichfield & District Sunday League Division. The Club, celebrating its 160th year in 2014 have had quite a year to remember as Club Secretary – Martin Jenkins and Vice Chair – Adam Harrison explain to the Post. Both Martin and Adam, involved with the Club for over 40 years combined, are very optimistic for the future. As Martin Jenkins explained “The Club managed to consolidate in Division One of the WCL following two years of relegation. This was a successful outcome but probably could have been better if we
hadn’t been so unlucky with the weather. No less than 7 of 22 matches (32%) were rained off without a ball bowled and in some cases early on the morning of the game with travel to the ground not necessary. The majority of teams finishing higher were more fortunate having only four games abandoned.” The 1st XI enjoyed success over Division winners Solihull Municipal, a double over Atherstone, Pak Shaheen and Barby, with the majority of the better performances coming in the final month of the season when the weather was more settled for cricket conditions. Captain Pete Magafas led the batting with support from Sunny Ahmed, Mo Fahim, Iftikhar Khan, David Brown and Daniel Bates whilst the bowling department was led by Sean McKee with excellent support from Akmal Bashir, Ahmed, Bates and Kishor Patel whilst long serving local Coleshillian Anthony Baker kept wicket. Martin set out the Club’s future plans for its senior sides “The ambition is to build on this year, with improved performances and player recruit-
ment, to achieve promotion back to the Premier Division. Looking further ahead, our ultimate aim is to return the Club back to the Birmingham & District Premier League. “To achieve our promotion ambitions in 2015, we are currently in the process of recruiting a senior Coach/Manager to bring in fresh ideas and hopefully new players.” In 2014, The Club marked its 160th Year with many successful social events including the well attended pre season Curry & Quiz evening, Presidents Day, the Club Summer BBQ and hosting the B46 Business Network Social Event. He highlight event, as executively reported in the Post in July, the Club held it’s ever Cider & Sausage Festival at the Memorial Park Sports Centre. As Martin summed the year up “We’ve had some great support from club members and local businesses including the Sertec Group, Atherstone Accident Repair Centre, Dennis R Walker Insurances, Love Coleshill and the B46 Business Network Group. A real highlight was locally based design firm AP Designs designing our new club badge for the 160th Year and it looks fantastic. We always look forward to working local businesses and it’s great they are prepared to support local sport in Coleshill.”
Memorial Park Sports Centre
The Post has reported throughout the year on the improvements taking place at the Memorial Park Sports Centre and we can reveal that the Club is once again celebrating positive news as it has obtained a significant funding award from Sport England Inspired Facilities programme to further improve the Centre. As lead project manager for the bid, Adam explained “We submitted a funding application back in June 2014 and we’ve have been awarded just over £45,000. This grant will cover further improvements to the Centre including refurbishment to the current dressing and shower rooms, the creation of disabled toilet facilities, enhanced security measures and other general improvements to the Centre. These improvements are providing new facilities to the Club but also to other existing sporting teams based at Memorial Park. “I think part of our success with getting the grant was the strong local support we received from groups such as the Chestnut Tree Nursery, Love Coleshill, Town Councillors, the Mayor of North Warwickshire and Coleshill Athletic Football Club. “The Inspired Facilities funding builds on a previous grant received early in 2014 from SITA Trust and additional financial support we received from Coleshill Town Council. This provided funding for a new roof plus new cricket changing and shower room facilities – which are currently under construction. We’ve also financially contributed to the project. “In a nutshell this is another major achievement for the Club and for sport in Coleshill. I think this is a fitting achievement for all the Club members who provided voluntary support and worked tirelessly over the past five years to get us to this point.” Also talking exclusively to the Post, Mayor of Coleshill - Councillor Harry Taylor commented
on Club’s funding success "This has been a great year for the cricket club, after some difficult years they are now receiving the financial support they deserve and I'm personally very proud that the majority of my fellow Coleshill Town Councillors voted in favour of allocating funds to support refurbishments at the Memorial Park Sports Centre. This building is a focal point of Coleshill and will play a key role in this Town Council’s big plans for the Memorial Park."
Junior Section
One of Adam’s other roles at the Club is Junior Development Manager. The Post has been reporting the progress and successes of the Clubs three junior teams, which competed in matches in the Warwickshire Cricket Board League’s at Under 9s, Under 11s and Under 14s age groups. The Club again ran weekly sessions during the winter, summer and summer holiday including Friday evening coaching sessions at Memorial Park running from April until mid September 2014. The sessions covered ages 6 to 14, including hardball and softball practice. Adam commenting on the junior section progress “These are really exciting times for our junior section; we are investing a lot of time and effort into our junior section. It’s a real core part of the Club’s development plan and further compliments our funding grants. This year we teamed up with cricket coaching specialists Complete Cricket Coaching and former ex-Warwickshire CCC pro Nick James and working with our own club coaches has helped our juniors go from strength to strength. This will continue once again next season. “In 2015, I am very keen to work with local schools and community groups, to ensure that we offer all local children and families the opportunity to get involved in community sports activities. The Club is offering local schools free coaching in partnership with Complete Cricket Coaching. “As a Club will be running, for new and existing juniors, a winter indoor coaching programme beginning on Sunday January 18th 2015 – 4.45-5.45pm

From back page... They had an outstanding run in the competition, taking the scalps of Lichfield City, Newcastle Town and Romulus, before falling to Kidderminster Harriers, who are an Academy Team, training/playing full time as a youth set up. A great achievement by the Under 18 team. The Soccer School, having produced Under 7 and Under 8 teams from last season’s intake of players, is to be relaunched in the next couple of weeks. The Club is looking for the next wave of
youngster, male or female to fill the ranks of the soccer school and progress to League football next season. Following on from improving the team infrastructure of the club, negotiations are on going for major improvements to the Packmeadow Ground. It is early stages but hopefully the changes planned will help in pushing the Football club on, to become even bigger and better, whilst also providing a venue to service the local community For anyone interested in the Soccer School contact Paul Billing on 07990 553029 or email paul@ unique-brass-finishes.co.uk

Junior Girls cricket for 2015
Adam also unveils, exclusively to the Post that the Club, working with Complete Cricket Coaching, is setting up its first Girls junior cricket section for the 2015 season. “This is really exciting, it’s something we’ve talked about doing for a while but never really got around to it. However, when the Club was applying for our grants to SITA Trust and Sport England, we realised that no female sport is being played at Memorial Park, which is a real shame. This is something as a Club that we really want to change. We’ve had some real interest in this already and the Chestnut Tree Nursery has kindly signed up to be the girls team sponsor. “The Girls Summer Coaching Programme will be starting on Wednesday May 6th and will run every Wednesday night up to July 15th from 6.00pm 7.00pm at Memorial Park, Coleshill. It will cover ages 6 to 11 and cover softball cricket.” Overall it looks a very bright future for the Club and let’s hope that in 160 years time the Club is still going as strong and playing in the wonderful setting that is Memorial Park. The Coleshill Post
Ronnie & Co. equals Dough!! On a bleak October evening, footballing royalty rolled into the City of Liverpool and set about outshining the floodlights at Anfield.
The Galactico’s, the current holders of the coveted Champions League silverware, the trophy hankered after by every multi-millionaire and billionaire club owner across Europe, the ten times Champions, boasting amongst their uber-talented ranks the current individual king of Europe himself - Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo alone had acquired 20 goals in 13 games before this first LFC encounter, that’s more goals than the entire Liverpool squad combined, his form this season has been beyond sublime and his stature as the current world number one is for the
moment, unimitiated. Leaving the great, if not possibly the greatest footballer of all time Lionel Messi to play second fiddle to his talent in the latest Ballon d’Or is an unbelievable achievement and a true testament to a ridiculous talent …..but this Wednesday night master class went to show that Madrid are not the Ronaldo show, and he is in fact just one golden cog of a dream machine, a well-oiled footballing Ferrari that swept past this Liverpool side without getting into second gear. This game served as a much needed wake up call to not just all at Anfield, but to the Premier League as a whole. Yes, we possibly provide the most entertaining games and yes we do attract the worlds very finest calibre, ..Diego Costa, Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao are just
the latest big names to grace our domestic stage, but this Spanish giant is operating at a completely different level to anything that the Premier League has to offer. With Champions League absentee Manchester Utd going through a transitional period that is likely to take a good 3 years to come good, Arsenal constantly flattering to deceive on the European stage, Manchester City still yet to find their ‘out of England’ formula and Liverpool on this evidence more off the pace than a 100 metre sprint between yours truly and Usain Bolt then we’re left realistically with only Chelsea that have an outsiders dream of retaining the holy grail of club football and priced at just 6/1 are simply not outsider value. If you’re tempted to have a flutter within this market then you cannot look past

The Coleshill Post - November 2014- Issue 16
In a scrappy start to proceedings, Coleshill managed to win the early physical battle; enabling them to get the ball down and start playing some aesthetically pleasing football. Coleshill’s early domination created many chances. Ryan Anderson had a great effort saved by Shirley’s keeper; from the resulting corner, a headed effort went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock, if a Shirley defender wasn’t there to head away off the line. Coleshill finally took the lead when a Ryan Anderson run down the right set up Cieran Lynch to easily put the ball home. Straight away, Coleshill managed to grab a second when Billy Kennedy’s long shot can only be fumbled by the Shirley keeper and the Coleshill forward taps the rebound home. Shirley found themselves back in the game when they scored on the counter attack and then Shirley got level when a twenty yard free kick flies into the top corner. The momentum was then obviously with Shirley as they took the lead right on half time. HT- Coleshill Town Colts U13’s 2-3 Shirley Town Juniors U13’s Coleshill looked to be in control in the second half and they could have took the lead when a twenty five yard out free kick struck by Billy Kennedy crashes off the woodwork; but they were rewarded for their persistent bravery in the final third when Cieran Lynch finished tidily from 10 yards out. As Coleshill pushed forward for the win, they were once again caught on the counter attack by Shirley as they went 4-3 up Coleshill immediately fought back when a powerful run by Shilo Ilunga set up Joshua Myatt to guide the ball home. For the last ten minutes, Coleshill threw the kitchen sink at Shirley to get the winner but their defence stood strong and saw out the Coleshill bombardment to earn themselves a hard fought point. Overall Coleshill’s performance was good enough to earn all three points and I think they would have been a tad disappointed.
Coleshill United Colts U15 6-2 Holy Souls Minor U15
A cold, foggy Sunday morning was the scene for Coleshill United colts to return to league action. The extremely foggy conditions proved difficult for both teams to get going. Coleshill were up against a reasonable outfit in the shape of Holy Souls. The visitors started strongly and hit the bar within the opening minutes. There persistent threat towards Coleshill’s goal paid off as they deservedly took the lead within the first 5 minutes. This however fuelled Coleshill as they then had the visitors pinned back in their own half. Coleshill soon equalised when a good corner from Sam Dunkley met Callum Nolan’s head and guided the ball into the far corner. Coleshill went into the lead after some brilliant work from James Crichton. He shook of three men and then dissected the two Holy Souls centre-half’s with an inch perfect ball through to Callum Nolan who grabbed his second of the day when he finished coolly from twelve yards out. Coleshill extended their lead when a Jack Whitaker free kick from 35 yards out misses every head and somehow finds its way into the net.3-1. Right on half time, Coleshill grabbed another as Callum Nolan completed his hat trick after a long ball caused a goal mouth scramble and he tucked the ball home. Half Time- Coleshill United Colts U15 4-1 Holy Souls Minor U15 Straight after the break, Callum Nolan added to his tally of goals as a 20 yard strike beats the visiting teams Keeper low to his right. Coleshill then continued the procession as Josh Brooke’s brilliant 25 yard out free kick flew straight into the top corner, leaving the keeper rooted to the spot. However, the visitors never gave up and there excellent hard work paid off as they grabbed a conciliation right before the end of play as another excellently worked free kick finds its way into the Coleshill’s top right corner. All In all, I think Coleshill would have been pleased with the result and performance following the previous week’s dismay. Callum Nolan’s clinical edge in the final third really helped Coleshill achieve a result that was probably fair based upon the balance of play
Coleshill United U15 Colts 5-2 Glades U15
After a fantastic start to the season, top of the league Coleshill were up against a very good outfit in the shape of fourth placed Glades. Glades had a fantastic opportunity to take the lead very early on in the game, when their striker was brought town in the penalty area and the referee immediately awarded a penalty. Luckily for Coleshill, their keeper Jacob Robinson fantastically saved the spot kick. After a sloppy start, the miraculous save from Jacob Robinson, seemingly gave the Colts a motive to push on and improve. The improved performance in the next five minutes paid dividends as Callum Nolan struck a fantastic 30 yard free kick into the roof of the Glades net. Following the break of the deadlock, Coleshill had Glades pinned back in their own half, searching for a second. Their hard work paid off when a Glades centre half unfortunately put the ball into his own net, gifting Coleshill a second. The teams went into halftime with Coleshill two nil to the good. The second half was far more subdued until the last twenty minutes where it seemingly came to life. The excitement began when Jack Whitacre perfectly dissected the two Glades centre half’s with a through ball, finding Callum Nolan who calmly slotted the ball past the Glades keeper. Glades suddenly got one back when their striker finished expertly from six yards out. Immediately after, Glades won a corner. The pinpoint cross found an unmarked Glades player who headed the ball home... 3-2! However, Coleshill then consolidated their lead when Josh Brookes found Callum Nolan who dribbled his way past four Glades defenders and then slotted the ball home to achieve an unbelievable hat trick. Nolan wasn’t done there, as he added to his personal tally with a fantastic forty yard pile driver from a free kick which the Glades keeper could only watch burst the rook of his net. A fantastic game was then brought to a close as Coleshill extended their run to six league wins out of six.

Coleshill Town FC resurgence continues at all ages BY NIGEL PEET
Coleshill Town FC continue to rebuild the club from the bottom to top, in the hope of bringing more glory days to the club. Approx 3 years ago, when, the now Chairman, Paul Billing took over the reigns, the club was in decline. It had only the one senior team and that team was in danger of relegation from the Midland Football Alliance into the lower level of the Midland Combination.
However, 3 years down the line, the future looks bright for Coleshill Town FC. Firstly the stability of the First/Senior Team was established and current manager Paul Casey is being backed to take the team to the next level. Relegation was avoided in Casey’s first season in charge and in his second season (2013-14) he guided the team to their highest ever League finish, 4th in the Midland Football Alliance. The team also made the last 32 of the FA Vase. Coleshill losing out to Dunston UTS, just 4 games short of a Wembley appearance !! This season the First team is again amongst the pace setters for the League title and currently sit 3rd in the table and pushing strongly for promotion. 22nd November, Coleshill Town begin their FA Vase challenge for this season, with a trip to Heanor Town, in Derbyshire. A difficult first game, but Paul Casey is hopeful that with his current squad, he can go further and better last season’s exploits. This season the First team has been strengthened/supported by the formation of a Reserve team, under the management of Paul Dolan and Simon Lyons. The team plays in the Midland Football League Reserve Div 1 and whilst impressing as a team in their own right , they also provide valuable support for the First Team. As mentioned, at the start, Coleshill Town are rebuilding the whole infrastructure of the club. This includes Ladies teams, a number of junior sides and a Soccer School Coleshill Town Ladies and Kingsbury/Coleshill Ladies both play in the Birmingham County Womens League Div 2. Coleshill Town Ladies are having a strong start to the season, losing only 1 league game and causing an Open Cup upset, defeating Sandwell Ladies from the Premier Division. It does help, when they have a prolific striker, Niamh Deasy, who has scored 31 goals in 11 games !! and 2 other players reaching double figures for goals scored. At Junior level the club can now boast of Under 7, Under 8, Under 13, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 Teams, playing in the Central Warwick and Midland Junior Prem Leagues. All are doing well in their respective leagues and enhancing the reputation of Coleshill Town FC. Special note should be made to the Under 18 team, who normally play in the Midland Junior Premier League, but stepped up to take part in the Midweek FA Youth Cup. Continued on page 61...
