Whitacres and Shustoke Horticultural Society: Can you help?
Volunteers needed to help maintain Coleshill’s Public Footpaths News Ln Local www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk WE are fortunate to have twenty miles of public footpaths in the Coleshill Parish that are popular with both local and visiting walkers for exercise and relaxation.
To ensure good access and keep the paths in reasonable condition we need maintenance work and for many years the Civic Society has organised this through the Parish Paths Partnership and the current Volunteer Agreement. The forthcoming Neighbourhood Plan will stress the need to keep this valuable local asset for public benefit. We need more volunteers to help with the work, which is mainly clearing overgrown vegetation, to provide an easy route for everyone. Why not come and join us? FROM one fictional school to another very much in the real world. Craig Tracey MP gamely answered questions from the school council of Coleshill C of E Primary School (ranging from, “Have you ever met the Queen?” to, “What are the Houses of Parliament like?”) on his recent visit to the school. Craig was pleased to take questions from the children, aged 6 – 11, who have all been elected by ballot just like Craig was in May 2015. Whilst the school council speak for 328 pupils, Craig represents 74,000 people across North Warwickshire and Bedworth. During the morning Craig spent time meeting staff and children and seeing teaching in action. Talking about some of the issues in education today he said, “The key to ensuring our young people are ready for life after school has to remain a focus on phonics, numeracy and literacy, and the better start they get at an early age really makes a huge difference.” He added, “I was really impressed by the school, from the Headteacher; Mr Kershaw and his staff, to the facilities, the welcoming atmosphere and the
PHOTO: Becky Holt inquisitive students. As a local MP being able to visit such an excellent school in the constituency is a privilege.” Craig also spent some time in the school’s vibrant Early Years Foundation Stage, where the Nursery and Reception classes have gone from strength to strength since they were re-opened in a new building five years ago. Here, staff encourage an enthusiasm for learning through a play based curriculum for children at the very beginning of their school careers. In a further drive to improve outcomes for all the little ones in their care, the nursery now takes children from two years old, enabling local families to access high quality learning opportunities tailor made for the age and developmental stage of their children. However, with a growing population and parents looking for not just childcare but also an
early years education, challenges remain for providers across the county, including limited capacity and uncertainty around the funding for the government’s commitment to provide 30 hours of free childcare to working parents, (a doubling of the current 15 hours for three and four year olds). Headteacher Andrew Kershaw said, “One of our key aims is to ensure that all children can reach their full potential and make progress regardless of their starting points. We firmly believe that the quality input we can provide from a young age will help close the gap in attainment where any exists and ensure children develop the skills they need in the school system and beyond.” As Craig told the school council when talking about his experience of being a new MP, “You don’t stop learning when you leave school.”

PLANS for an industrial rail freight park on the former Daw Mill colliery site have been rejected by North Warwickshire Borough Council after the Planning Committee unanimously refused to grant planning permission. Over 150 residents attended the meeting held at the Council House in Atherstone with the Council having to set up overflow areas for residents to listen to the proceedings. A packed council chamber, internal meeting rooms and specially prepared outside covered areas heard Phil Mason and numerous borough councillors lambast the applicants representatives and Warwickshire County Council. Conservative Group Leader, David Humphreys said: “I am extremely happy about this result from the planning board. It protects not only the green belt but the whole concept of the rurality of North Warwickshire; this area has tremendous views of the Blythe Valley and provides a meaningful gap between the major settlements of North Warwickshire and the slow ingress of major urban neighbours.” Local Borough Councillors Adam
Farrell and Dominic Ferro also spoke at the Board to represent the views of local residents living in Coleshill. Councillor Adam Farrell told the meeting “This application is an insult to the people of North Warwickshire and an insult to the many thousands of miners and their families who worked at Daw Mill. This land is in the green belt, the applicant has failed to show that there are special circumstances to allow this development to go ahead and there was an original requirement that the land should be returned to green field when the mining operation ceased. The HGV movements on our country roads are just plain mad and the junctions at Furnace End and Fillongley are not suitable for extra traffic. Even with the proposed mitigation measures, local people will still suffer. All of this is not offset by the job creation of this proposal, which has been continually reduced since the original application was submitted. Yes to jobs but not at any cost and this application is too high a price to pay. Local people deserve better, local people deserve to see this application refused and I urge the planning committee to do just that tonight.” Speaking after the meeting, Councilor Dominic Ferro said, “If anyone knows the Green Man crossroads, they will know the traffic issues that are already faced by those using it to travel to and from home. Kindhearted Aunties raise cash for Children in Need Children in need is the charity that we at Aunties focus on each year.
As we spend our lives looking after children it is a charity that is close to all of our hearts and that we believe fits our childcare setting perfectly. We are extremely fortunate to have such wonderful children and parents to support our fundraising year after year. Each year we do a different sponsored event for all children and staff to take part in. This is in addition to a week long cake sale by Libby Webster. This year our sponsored event was a ramble. Each day of the week building upto children in need all staff and children went for a ramble around Water Orton village. The children were fantastic and never once let the weather put them off as it was often wet and windy. The children enjoyed observing cows, calves, horses, birds and pet dogs along the way. They also enjoyed wading through the
fallen Autumn leaves. Each evening Libby baked sponge cakes decorated with children in need rice paper. She also made chocolate cornflake cakes so that parents and children had a choice of cakes to buy each day. This was a fantastic commitment from Libby as she was baking until 10 o’clock most evenings. Her efforts were rewarded by parents as she sold out every night by the time all children had gone home. Everyone at Aunties would like to say a huge thank you to all of our children and parents for the unbelievable support they have shown with sponsors collected and cakes purchased. They have shown great community spirit and have gone far beyond our expectations with the combined funds raised. Our grand total so far is a whopping £562.85 with some sponsors still to be collected. Thank you once again for the fantastic support for such a fantastic charity.

Bellringers are ding donging merrily on high this Christmas

VICAR Nick Parker was coming out of a High Street shop last Christmas and thought he was hearing things, but it was his bellringers getting some bell handling practise ahead of a busy time for them. This is the only time of year, you’ll recognise the numbers for what they are - Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, and Little Donkey, played on the bells at the parish church. Rung correctly, and on the right bells, they are a true rendition of the tunes (technically, the actual bells for Twinkle, and the front seven of the back eight for Donkey). We don’t usually ring those tunes during the year, concentrating instead on improving the quality of the ringing and learning simple methods. They are very good handling exercises, however, where you have to stand your bell at hand and backstroke as the tune de-
mands. And it’s also good fun. We’ll explain hand and back stroke when you come for your first lesson any Tuesday from 7.30pm. Like most towers, we are a friendly team who welcome visiting ringers and novices alike. Once learners are safe and confident enough to ring simple place changes they can go for extra lessons at the Birmingham School of Bellringing (http://birminghambells.com/home/about-the-school/) and start to learn some of the thousands of methods ringers have been ringing for centuries. By the way, if you hear this, it’s either us ringers having some fun or there’s probably someone at your door. 4659 9546 4659 9546

COLESHILL’S ten bells are a magnet for visiting ringers. We are often visited as part of a tower grab, by ringers staying locally while at the NEC, or by ringers at smaller local towers who want a ten bell experience.

600 years of ringing By Mike Walpole Writer
THE first eight bells were installed in 1412. In 1550 the spire was damaged by lightning. Two bells were sold to pay for the repair.
Six bells were recast to form five bells by Joseph Smith of Edgbaston in 1720. Henry Smith of Coleshill added a new treble (smallest) bell. The bells were rehung in 1907 on cast iron headstocks with ball bearings in memory of J K D Wingfield Digby, MP. Two more bells were given in 1923 by A Fifeld in memory of his parents. The oak frame was replaced by a steel frame in 1977/78, and six bells recast. Two bought from Nether Whitacre were also recast. The £13,730 cost was raised by ringers, most of it from the collection and sale of waste paper and cardboard. Part of the frame was saved and turned to make the spider which holds the ropes out of the way when not being used. The treble (tuned to A sharp) weighs just over three hundredweight (about 190kg), the tenor, tuned to F sharp, (largest bell) weighs a little over 14 hundredweight (about 721kg). They’re not the smallest in the tower. We have a set of handbells, the smallest of which is tuned to A and weighs nearly eight ounces (248g). The largest is tuned to G and weighs two pounds (1.7kg).
We are proud of our ten bells (tenor 14 cwt, Fsharp) and have them serviced every year by John Taylor and Co, the Loughborough bell foundry. It's a worthwhile investment to keep what is actually a £100,000 musical instrument in good condition. We could ring thousands of methods given time and talent - but we would have to go some to beat the digital bells of Sacred Heart and St Teresa. Their “bells” are from an Italian digital bells system which has 456 different tunes to choose from at the touch of a button, including the Angelus which is rung out three times a day at 9am, noon and 6pm, and a funeral toll. The system was bought and installed by Father Kevin’s predecessor, now Bishop Marcus Stock. The main unit sends a signal to four big horn speakers on the tower roof. At Maxstoke church, the bells are a recording made 20 or so years ago at Coleshill church by the then ringers. At Water Orton, there is only a calling bell. The six bells at St Mary & St Margaret’s church, Castle Bromwich, have been ringing out since Norman times, although refurbished in 1952. Ringers there are appealing for £100,000 to have the bell installation completely refurbished and to add two new trebles in a new frame. They hope to have the project complete to celebrate the tercentenary of Sir John Bridgeman's 1717 installation of a ring of five. They practice on Wednesday evenings from 7.30 pm to 9 pm St John the Baptist, Middleton has three bells only rung on special occasions. There is no regular practice. St Chad's, Wishaw has three bells which are rung regularly. Practice night is Thursday, 6.30 pm. St Nicholas, Curdworth also has three bells. Two of the bells are rung before Sunday services, at weddings and sometimes tolled at funerals. There are no ringers.
Pealing back time Few worshippers who use the kneelers in church know that this one is a record of what was in the belfry over 40 years ago.
The clue is in the number of ropes. There's eight of them, the number of bells in the church until some were recast, another added, and the set increased to 10 in a new frame in 1978. The ropes now have a claret sally, not blue. Ringers paid the bill by collecting thousands of pounds worth of waste paper and cardboard. On the back of the kneeler are initials of its maker and the date - 1974.

AT our November meeting, we stood in memory of longstanding member Brenda Eustace from Coleshill who died early in November. She had coped bravely with a chronic back injury for many years. Joy Hancock was presented with a card and gift to celebrate her 60 years in Coleshill WI, our longest-serving member. Everyone admired the colourful display of a dozen Christmas Child shoe boxes full of gifts for deprived children around the world. This was also our Annual Meeting at which WI members voted for their new committee. Christine Jones was reelected as President with Jane Hewitt as Secretary. Jane gave the annual report on the year’s events and Christine thanked everyone for their hard work, loyalty and support throughout what had proved to be an exciting and eventful National
Centenary Year. After refreshments, there was a highly entertaining social time with members staging a hilarious fashion show of inventive outfits entirely made from newspaper, pins and trimmings and modelled by their creators. Our visitor, Rita Wells, judged the competition for the most unusual brooch which was won by golfer Elaine Partridge with her intriguing piece in the shape of miniature golf clubs. The next meeting on December 8th will feature the Christmas party plus our pantomime and entertainment and the performers are busy rehearsing for it. The competition will be for a homemade Christmas table decoration and visitors are welcome as always. The Group Carol Service with Hurley, Wishaw and Curdworth WIs will be held at Coleshill United Church at 7.30pm on Thursday 10th December and followed by mulled wine and mince pies. The collection will be divided between the United Church and the Emergency Responders.

& District U3A U3 Coleshill www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk THE speaker at our monthly meeting was David Swain who gave a most interesting talk on Life in Nelsons Navy.
In his time, Nelson was heralded for his inspirational leadership, superb grasp of strategy and unconventional tactics, all of which resulted in a number of decisive naval victories. He was born in Norfolk, his father being a clergyman. He joined the navy through the influence of his uncle and rose rapidly through the ranks, learning first hand about the importance of each and every job aboard. Nelson served with leading naval commanders of the period before obtaining his own command in 1778 in which he developed a reputation in the service through his personal valour and firm grasp of tactics. He was wounded sev-
eral times in combat, losing an arm at Santa Cruz de Tenerife and the sight in one eye in Corsica. The battle of Trafalgar in 1805 was Britain’s greatest naval victory, but, during the action, Nelson aboard HMS Victory, was fatally wounded. His body was brought back to England where he was accorded a state funeral. HMS Victory was built in 1765 in Greenwich, it weighed 3,500 tons with 100 guns and 3 masts. 6,000 trees were used to build it together with approx 550,000 nails. 26 miles of rope and 37 sails were needed and 850 souls were aboard. Of course everyone had to complete their ablutions and when they needed to relieve themselves they visited ‘The Heads’ at the front of the ship. To clean up they pulled on a piece of rope which was left trailing in the sea, wiped themselves and dropped it back down for the next person to use. Hence the phrase ‘Tow Rag’. Sounds very unpleasant. Wounded soldiers were sent

to the hospital in Portsmouth. They travelled through the harbour and along a creek to gain access. This is where the saying ‘up the creek’ comes from. Incidently, a boat is a vessel which is unable to carry another boat but a ship can. Many thanks to David Swain for an informative and amusing talk. Next year we have other interesting speakers, the first one on January 18th being ‘The Life and Poems of Lord Byron’. If you are retired or semi retired and would like to meet like minded people, please come along to our monthly meetings which are held on the third Monday of the month at 10.30 in Coleshill Town Hall. Our next general meeting is a week earlier than usual, December 14th at 11.30 when we have Christmas activities and a bring and share lunch. Recruitment Open Day at Father Hudson’s Care Introducing St Vincent’s House Tuesday 8 December
You are warmly invited to join Father Hudson’s Care at our St Vincent’s House open day, from 10am until 3pm on Tuesday 8 December. St Vincent’s House is a newly built block of ten apartments, in a quiet location just off the Coventry Road, Coleshill. Please come to the office in St George’s House, Gerards Way and we’ll show you around. The postcode is B46 3FG and our phone number is 01675 434000. If you are interested in care work then you’re especially welcome! The apartments are quickly being let to people who need support for their daily living, and Father Hudson’s Care is recruiting carers. The ideal carer is kind, patient and compassionate, reliable and committed to helping others, and a good communicator able to listen and respond to the needs of the cared for person in a non-judgemental way. If that sounds like you then a job with Father Hudson’s Care, here in Coleshill, may be just the thing. Previous experience is helpful, but not necessary. Father Hudson’s Care believes in caring for employees and offers excellent support and training to ensure all staff have the skills and confidence to do their jobs. Most of the apartments are already spoken for, but there are still places available. The apartments were built with people with learning disabilities in mind. With personalised support tailored to their own package of care, tenants will be able to live the independent life of their choosing. Remembrance Day reminds us those values must sometimes be safeguarded at great cost. Paris was the worst attack on French soil since World War 2, and across the world hundreds of thousands of people are dying in wars every year. The next twenty years will not see this terrorist threat disappear. Most people in Britain were horrified by the attacks in Paris earlier this month, some placed the French flag as their profile picture on Facebook and peace signs combined with the Eiffel Tower were shared widely on social media. It is therefore disturbing that the response of others to the attacks in Paris was to blame Muslims and suggest Britain should

CURDWORTH, Middleton and Wishaw vicar Rev Dr Joshva Raja is back in his parishes after training Myanmar Christian leaders to communicate effectively. The visit, with friend and Archbishop of Dublin The Most Rev Michael Jackson, followed a consultation at Queens Foundation for Ecumenical Theological Education in Birmingham. A visitor to it who had seen Rev Joshva’s books on introducing communication and media studies to theological students, invited him to the Association for Theological Education centre at Yangoon, Myanmar in summer to lecture on the subject. “I had raised a lot of funds for this centre to be bought and so it was a privilege for me to go and train theological lecturers on this area
of Christian communication” Joshva told the Post. Despite democracy and liberalisation helping Myanmar change very fast, no one dares oppose or question the way the system is run for a few, and often making life difficult for Christians. “We were able to provide basic communication skills such as interpersonal, group and mass communication; disaster information management particularly using volunteers in the churches; training in how to communicate the gospel effectively, using communication skills for peace and dialogue, communication practices and examples for community development and social change. “We highlighted the way Jesus communicated by listening to the audience and interactively using parables and other simple means and methods of communication using imagination and aesthetic elements in public and local spheres.”
contribute to building up our country and many serve in our forces. Anti immigrant prejudice and racism will not defeat terrorism. In fact anti-immigrant prejudice undermines our British values of tolerance and respect. Terrorists want us to turn in on ourselves in fear. That is why we should do the opposite and show our solidarity with those around the world who wants to live in a free and open democratic society, no matter what their colour, race or religion. Uniting against this evil is a good place to start. After the attacks in London in 2005 the Mayor of Paris said “Today we are all Londoners” and this month we are all Parisians. The debate on immigration is important and it is not racist to want to control immigration.

What Happened in 2015? Pr Property www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk
WE are now nearing the end of 2015 and at the end of last year both the Bank of England and the majority of economic commentators were forecasting that interest rates would have risen by now. So what’s happened? Unemployment has fallen, inflation is almost non existent, national debt is coming under control, the economy is growing and the housing market is growing. In any other context you would expect The Bank of England to have risen interest rates a long time ago if they were looking at just the UK econo-

If you are a risk taker take one of the latter as you may end up better off with slightly lower rates but the safer route is always to take a fixed rate as you then don’t have to worry about what happens to interest rates during the fixed rate period. Coleshill’s Neighbourhood Plan The Consultation Phase 25 November 2015-6 January 2016 COLESHILL'S first-ever Neighbourhood Plan has now reached the consultation phase. It's important that you read the summary of the Plan on pages two and three.
Please make comments on the pro-forma on page 4 and return to Coleshill Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, Coleshill Town Hall, High Street Coleshill. The plan is relevant until 2030 - although it is subject to local review. In recent months, members of the Steering Group have been looking at document design issues and refining the huge amount of evidence which we received from the Coleshill community to our questionnaires and on-line survey. The Neighbourhood Plan is a reflection of those responses from people who live and work in Coleshill - both individuals and groups and also from students who attended the Sixth Form
at the Coleshill School. The Neighbourhood Plan is primarily a planning document which gives local communities more influence over the type of development which takes place in their town. It's about achieving sustainable planning and desirable growth for present and future generations. This doesn't just apply to plans for new building but to our whole historic and natural environment - from the protection of Green Belt land, to buildings and town features that we cherish. Our Neighbourhood Plan still has to work within national and local planning frameworks, but regional planning committees have been dismantled. As a consequence, the focus should no longer be on targets set by specialists and groups remote from the communities they affect. It's the Localism Act 2011 that has made this happen - 'Localism' being the key word.

The Coleshill Post
This is your opportunity to HAVE YOUR SAY! The following brief summaries outline the core issues and areas of focus that are discussed in greater depth in the Neighbourhood Plan document. If you would like to read the document in its entirety please visit Coleshill Town Hall, Coleshill Library or look on line www. coleshilltowncouncil.gov.uk or visit us on Facebook/Coleshill Neighbourhood Plan.
Housing (proposals HNP1-3) NWBC is the Planning Authority which has responsibility for Coleshill. It is set a target of new homes to achieve over a fifteen year period by the Government. The Borough Council then has to break down this total figure and set targets for individual Town and Parish Councils in their area. These targets can be subject to Government review. Planning Authority targets are not always straight forward and they can be required to negotiate with adjoining Authorities who may be seen as having
Economy (proposals TCLENP1-5 / ICLENP1-3)
A strong local economy is essential to preserve and enhance Coleshill as a focal point for business activity and employment in the area. This applies to the High Street and the Industrial Estate. The variety of local shops and amenities were consistently high on the list of why people liked living in Coleshill. However,
our commercial community are having to contend with competition from the internet and large stores - in and out of town. It is essential to maintain retail frontages on the High Street - their traditional style and scale. Allowing shops to change function e.g. into offices, will have a catastrophic effect. Where design allows, accommodation on upper floors of shops could become

greater needs. This has been the case with NWBC and Tamworth. NWBC have categorised Coleshill as a Market Town in the Green Belt and the target for new dwellings within the fifteen year time frame is set for 275. Of this total, approx. 186 have already been built or planning permission has been given. A list of nominated preferred projects are within the boundaries of the Town on brownfield sites. It is anticipated that a number of windfall sites will meet any shortfall.
Housing development must blend with immediate environment. While a mix of housing is planned, special regard should be given to starter homes and social housing. There should also be opportunities for down-sizing. In the allocation of social housing, priority should be given to applicants who have grown up or work in Coleshill. If the ban on development in the Green Belt is ever relaxed, then land to the south-east of the Town should be considered.
residential provision. Efforts should be made to attract new retail outlets to Coleshill. Encourage local organisations like ‘Love Coleshill’ to promote this. Also encourage local producers to utilise market outlets. Address shortage of parking space for High Street customers. Promote development and diversity of the Industrial Estate.
A good transport system is essential to support and encourage the sustainable economic growth of Coleshill. It will ensure that Coleshill continues to act as a business and employment hub for the surrounding area. Strategies to improve the flow and the
density of traffic in Coleshill - especially at peak times - and especially on the High Street and Green Man crossroads. Improve pedestrian access and safety especially around the Coleshill schools. Set up a feasibility study for the construction of an Eastern by-pass via Faraday Avenue, Hams Hall (Linked to future HS2 scheme).
More parking for Coleshill. Better enforcement of parking in Coleshill especially disabled- user spaces. Re-direct all HGV’s to avoid High Street and Cole End bridge. Priority signs for Cole End bridge crossing. Ensure that all HGV’s on Station Road exit via Gorsey Lane.
21
Coleshill is an historic Market Town and residents are very proud of its heritage. There is much to protect and preserve especially with many listed buildings in the Conservation Area. The same can be said about the Town’s parks and open spaces - and with the playing fields attached to schools. There are also a number of public footpaths which need to be inspected and maintained. An area around the River Cole is also subject to flood prevention measures. Coleshill is also a Burial Authority.
Coleshill’s Neighbourhood Plan also discusses the Community and it’s Leisure and Wellbeing Consultation with Coleshill residents, confirms the view that there is an active community life in the Town. These three schools have excellent reputations and are high achievers. Between them they are able to meet the admission needs of primary school children who live in Coleshill. The Coleshill School is a community secondary school which has academy status. The Coleshill School has a thriving sixth form and is a member of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership. The Town Council has allotments for public hire on four sites. They continue to be popular and an allotment project on the Memorial Park site is stimulating interest. Head of Sixth Form | Coleshill School
TIME has flown since the September sunshine welcomed us to another academic year and we are now well into the swing of things with the sixth form.
The new sixth form team has tweaked a few things with a focus in particular on student basics in the classroom and the feeling so far is that this year’s year 12 and 13 cohorts can go on to great things. Sixth Form Progress Record We now have a sixth form based tutor team where sixth formers are in mixed year 12 & 13 tutor groups and one of the benefits of this is that specialist tutors can have regular conversations with stu-
dents about learning and progress. The progress record booklet ensures that students and tutors have regular conversations not only about their academic progress but also about leadership, enrichment and HE/ Careers. University and careers news Year 13 students have been busy with University applications and those who applied by the end of November are reaping the rewards of having offers in the bag, lots of them from Russell Group Universities. It makes a real difference to have something concrete to aim for so we are encouraging those who haven’t yet applied to get cracking. Not everyone is aiming for a university course. We are increasingly seeing students apply for traineeships and apprenticeships and there are some re-
ally attractive propositions out there. Recently students have been looking at some very interesting offers from JLR, KPMG, Severn Trent and National Grid. Starting salary for one of these is £23,500. Yes, at eighteen! We are developing our sixth form website to include more links to university and careers pathways. Have a look at the UCAS widget – it’s pretty impressive. Links with universities and employers continue to thrive and new partnerships are developing year on year. We have long established links with Coventry, Warwick and Aston Universities and Coventry University College and were

happy to welcome representatives from these to our recent Sixth Form Open Evening. With our #aiminghigh ethos we are encouraging students to be aspirational whichever route they take. Student leadership One prominent theme in the culture and ethos of the sixth form is leadership and current students are embracing this wholeheartedly. The Coleshill Sixth Form Leadership Award (supported by The Grammar School Foundation) is open to all students at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels and we will hold our first award ceremony just before the Christmas break. of tasks which are logged and monitored in discussions with their tutor. Current examples are: mentoring younger students, classroom support, sixth form council membership, leading charity events, community placements outside of school and the summer ball committee. A fantastic recent leadership development was a number of Coleshill students taking part in National Citizenship Service. Seven students from year 12 completed this prestigious award and received their certificates at a ceremony in Coventry. Well done to all. Future Learn Several students (and even some staff ) have taken advantage of this fantastic online learning resource. Future Learn offers free, university accredited, online courses which normally last for ten or twelve hours over a few weeks. Which employer or university could fail to be impressed with a student who, of their own volition, completed a course like this? Recent course titles have included: Social Media in Healthcare , Basic Science: Understanding Numbers, Exploring English: Magna Carta, Empire: the Controversies of British Imperialism , Heart Health: A Beginners’ Guide to Vascular Disease. I can imagine some parents taking advantage of this, too. Let’s get a trend started ! (www.futurelearn.com)

RED COFFEE CART A few years ago Becci Lee was watching the Edinburgh Tattoo with her father and she noticed that people were buying coffee from a van run by two women. They were both inspired by the ingenuity of the ladies and Becci decided that she wanted to do the same so she began searching for an eye catching van on Ebay. Straight away she saw the little Piaggio for sale and it was love at first sight! Her ‘quirky girl’ needed converting into a coffee van and so she designed the beautiful little three wheeler ‘little red coffee cart’ that is now a prominent feature at lots of events, (including Love Coleshill events!) Becci is approaching retirement and wants to have her own business which she can enjoy. She loves to meet people and this is a great way to
visit events and chat to people from all walks of life. Of course lots of us know the cart and are grateful for its appearance at Love Coleshill events. The French Market would not e the French Market without a freshly baked croissant and a Red Coffee Cart Coffee! Take a look at Becci’s web site www.redcoffeeco.co.uk and next time you are buying your coffee from the ‘quirky girl’ say hello and mention that you saw her in the Coleshill Post!
LINDSEY WHITBURN Lindsey Whitburn shared the care for her bachelor Uncle, Bill, who had been diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer in April this year. Marie Curie offered support and respite when he deteriorated and stabilised him to go home again for a short time, but when he declined they found him a room and enabled the family to care and stay with him. He passed away in August. Whilst visiting him at the Hospice in Solihull, she noticed a poster promoting a trek through the Canadian Rockies to raise funds for the charity and decided it was her way to give something back so she became a Fundraiser for Marie Curie. Since then she has organised a charity fundraiser at the Community Hall in Coleshill, raising a phenomenal £1200. This took place in September and, with auctions that ran alongside, together with car boot sales and massive help from friends and family contributing time, energy and donations the fundraising now stands at £2780. A massive achievement! Marie Curie sets a target of £4050 so Lindsey still has a way to go. On top of that she needs to lose weight and get fit before the trek in June next year, so the next few months will be very busy for her. She would be grateful for your support so if you are able to offer sponsorship or donations please go to www.justgiving.com/lindseywhitburn If you are able to offer your time to Marie Curie as a volunteer please contact the local hospice on 0121 703 3600 or the Volunteer Centre on 0845 305 2191. Thank you from Lindsey, and her Uncle Bill.

On Thursday 12th November Rev Marjorie Walton and her husband Bob hosted a coffee morning at their home in Whitacre Heath to raise money to aid Egrit a grandmother who lives in Balaka, Malawi.
Due to the untimely death of her daughter Egrit has needed to take care of her grandchildren but this has been hampered by drought, followed by devastating floods. The money raised at the Coffee Morning, it totalled £171, will be sent directly to Egrit’s Parish and she will be given a sack of seeds and a sack of fertilizer and thus be able to feed her family from the crops grown. At the moment they are barely able to survive at subsistence level. The photographs show some of those who attended including Marjorie standing on far left of the picture but also one of Egrit with one of her her grandchilden at home in Balaka. “For me, taste and ease is sometimes more important than ‘authenticity’. I want to show you that Spanish food is not complex or difficult and can be cooked every night”. – Omar Allibhoy
That very paragraph in Chef Omar’s book – Tapas Revolution – is exactly the reason why I’ve been racing home from early work this week. I’ve been dying to try out just a few of his 120 recipes and they are yet to disappoint. 8 years ago, Omar took hold of the reigns of El Pirata Detapas, London and since then decided to open up his own chain restaurant Tapas Revolution to show people how easy it is to cook Spanish food. Tapas Revolution has finally come to Birmingham and people are in for a treat… The restaurant has been number one on my list of places to try for a while. On arrival, the waiter somehow knew who I was, probably from the grin on my face. They were already expecting me, but the “Welcome Emma”, and straight away handing me a brown bag with Omar’s recipe book inside kind of won me over. It’s a shame Omar wasn’t in the restaurant cooking that night as it would have been lovely to put a name to a face, but the warm welcome certainly set the tone for the rest of the night. Tapas Rev Collage A perfect way to start off a Spanish themed night is by ordering a glass of fresh sangria, so this is exactly what I did. Josh ordered an Estrella Galicia and we were quickly shown to our table, overlooking the station. Tapas Revolution are open from 7am on weekdays, serving a variety of chorizo, ham and egg breakfast options and are pushing the lunch time meal deals. A big thumbs up for the main menu which is easily split into nibbles, hams, meats, fish and vegetarian options; not forgetting that they also provide a ‘set meal deal’ option if you are sharing between two or more people. We were kindly offered a few starters to try, and originally we were only going to order six of the dishes, but somehow ended up ordering 8: Gambas al ajillo – Tiger prawns cooked in garlic and chilli oil
Huevos rotos – Baked chorizo sausage, potatoes and egg Torreznos con mojo dulce – Crispy pork belly with sweet and spicy sauce Pulpo a la Gallega – Steamed octopus with potatoes and pimentón paprika Calamares fritos – Deep-fried squid with alioli Patatas bravas – Deep-fried potatoes with spicy tomato sauce and alioli Croquetas de bacalao – Deep-fried cod and bechamel croquettes served with alioli Chorizo a la sidra – Spiced Asturian sausage roasted with cider We practically blinked and our food was already being brought out to us. The service on the night was right on the mark and exceptionally speedy. I could see other people happily enjoying their tapas dishes, so this was a good sign. The octopus and chorizo were two of the first dishes out, and just a minute or so later, the rest of the food started arriving, piping hot to the table. If you ever visit here, you have to order the Chorizo a la sidra – as it was incredibly tender. For me personally, it was definitely was love at first bite. The food quickly disappeared from the table which which speaks volumes. I always try to be as quick as possible when taking photographs of food as I don’t like to appear rude at the table and it’d be a dear shame to let the food go cold. I do firmly believe that a tapas meal should never leave you feeling too full or bloated for a dessert, so naturally ordering one for afterwards is always the best option… IMG_7161 I’m yet to work my way around the food section, but I already feel that Tapas Revolution is one of the many highlights of Grand Central. The dishes are all reasonably priced and won’t break the bank. If you are thinking of going after work one night, it might be a sensible option to book a table in advance as I can image it getting quite busy towards Christmas. I would highly recommend the Torreznos con mojo dulce – crispy pork belly and Huevos rotos – chorizo as two main dishes, you won’t be disappointed. Also seeing as various staff members are Spanish, you could try ordering your mains in their mother tongue – they’ll appreciate it!

William engineers his path to success at Keepmoat NEWLY promoted Assistant Engineer 22 year old William Mpoka, who lives in Stoke Heath, Coventry, is a shining example to the city’s young graduates of what you can achieve early in your career through commitment, hard work and determination.
South African born William, who only came to live in the UK when he was twelve years old, attended an employment open day five years ago organised by housing and regeneration specialist, Keepmoat in North East Coventry. Following that he was offered a six week placement in Keepmoat’s Land and Partnership department to gain experience for his Business Administration course at Henley College. But the placement proved so successful that Keepmoat offered him a job and he has been working there ever since. William has spent time in Keepmoat’s Construction, Engineering, Commercial, Technical and Home Sales departments to

understand the housebuilding cycle. The company has supported William’s education to expand his knowledge and passion for engineering in particular, and give him the skills to progress in the sector. His commitment has paid off, having recently completed his HNC in Civil Engineering and been promoted to the role of Keepmoat Assistant Engineer too. He’s already working on a range of different schemes across the Midlands including Keepmoat’s developments in Cannock, Telford, Coleville and Stoke on Trent. In Coventry Keepmoat is into phase three of Spirit Quarters - a £360m housing redevelopment scheme to build 3,300 new homes in Wood End, Henley Green, Manor Farm and Deedmore. William comments: “I never thought attending the open day with my friends would have resulted in such a good outcome.” He continues: “I was voted Keepmoat Homes Trainee of the Year a few years ago which I was delighted with. The support they
have given me is such a bonus and enabled me to take the next step towards professional qualifications for what I hope will be a long-term career in engineering and construction.” Paul Degg, Keepmoat’s regional homes managing director, adds: “William impressed us from the moment we met him. When he started, he couldn’t drive and had to get a bus and two trains each way just to get to our office in Coleshill each day. Since then he has jumped at the chance to take part in every bit of training available to him. “He has been consistently praised for his hard work, drive and ambition as well as his enthusiasm and desire to learn. His attitude sets a fine example for many young people considering their options, especially in the current market. William is a great ambassador for the company and we hope others will follow in his footsteps to choose a career in the construction industry. He definitely has a bright future ahead of him.”

ON Tuesday 10th November the B46 Business team celebrated their 2nd birthday with a special breakfast event.
LEFT TO RIGHT: Jemma James (TruTac), Anna Plotnek (AP Designs), Mark Clark (Commbus), Lorna D Sheldon and Penny Sheward (PS Consulting Group)
The birthday celebration was held at the prestigious Coleshill Manor, home of the IM Group, whom kindly sponsored the event. The morning proved to be a wonderful success as over 45 local business professionals turned up to help celebrate their birthday milestone. Attendees were given a fascinating insight into the history of the IM Group which includes IM Properties and International Motors, which is the UK home of Subaru and Isuzu. In 1976 Lord Edmiston founded what was to become the IM Group out of the ashes of the Jensen Motor Company. Since then it’s expanded into other sectors including property, finance and Lord Edmiston is also the founder of the Christian Vision charitable trust. In addition, Lorna D Sheldon, Managing Director of LDS International (Ltd) was the guest speaker for the morning. As a highly regarded personal communications expert and motivational speaker, Lorna shared her top tips on how to communicate with confidence and always create the right impression. Everyone enjoyed the interactive session and learnt something new. Event organisers, Penny Sheward of PS Consulting Group, Jemma James of TruTac and Anna Plotnek of AP Designs, felt very proud about the group’s success. Penny said “Thank you to everyone who attended this morning. Turning 2 is a great achievement for us and we couldn’t have done it without the support of so many local businesses.” Anna commented “There was lots of positive feedback from the event and the group has a positive networking buzz, we really are helping to promote businesses in Coleshill and the surrounding area.” Jemma concluded “It’s great to see so many local businesses networking together. It’s a proud moment to reflect back on what we’ve achieved over the last two years and to realise how much local business we’ve helped to generate.” The team are already excited about 2016 and have planned some interesting events to ensure the momentum of the group continues. Their next event is the Business B46 Christmas Party, on Friday 11th Dec, at Coleshill Hotel. Tickets are £20 each to include a 3 course meal and Disco. Tables can also be prebooked for groups. Each attendee can pre-request a song from the DJ to get everyone on the dance floor! January will see the group host a mini masterclass on LinkedIn and February’s topic will be Twitter and Facebook for business. For more details on any event or to receive Business B46 updates please email info@business46.co.uk call 01675 434583 or visit www.business46.co.uk.

CIE Promotions opened the doors to its new Coleshill premises in October 2015.
Based on the High Street we’ve received a very warm welcome from Coleshill, both from local businesses and residents. Established in May 2010 as a home start up business producing embroidered workwear for local businesses. With the success of the workwear we then expanded to also start producing both embroidered and printed clothing for business and sports teams, before finally branching off into providing sportswear, such as football kits, too. CIE Promotions has continued to grow its client base and a need for retail premises was met with the delightful Grade II listed 124 High Street, Coleshill. In the shop is a selection of the items which we can offer from the workwear, sportswear, hospitality, leisurewear and school uniform ranges we provide. At CIE Promotions we believe that image,

Former World Champion inspires all female boxing club with emotional talk
By Jason Lowe Boxing Expert
FORMER two time World boxing champion Nigel Benn was in Birmingham recently at a meet and greet dinner where he made a top night for the women’s boxing club who was asked to attend the event and spend some time with the legend of the ring. Benn who lives in Australia and has done so for a few years now comes to the UK a few times a year and any show that is for him normally is a great night. Phoenix Group plc invited the all-female boxing club as their special guests and Benn who was in the company of his boxing son Conner made everyone remember the night with some personal touches. Benn spoke very open and candidly about his life in the army and also very
his boxing career. I have known Nigel for years and been to dozens of shows with him, but for some reason, this one was different. Nigel on this rare one off, spoke of his love and heartache for his brother who was killed as a teenager. Nigel broke down when he recalled the childhood he lived and loved in East London. He wiped tears away after recalling how at an early age his brother died and how never got over it. He and his brother were very close and a racist attack lead to his death at an early age. Nigel, at the time of going to press, has had to cope with the death of his father. Nigel had just flown back home when he had to return back to the UK on hearing the news. Even though it was a tough night for Nigel, this show was one of the best up close shows I have attended in the past 2 years.

Nigel Benn shows his tender side in Birmingham Anthony Joshua pops in to Hagley Road show
He is the one they are looking at to bring top level professional Heavyweight boxing back into the UK. They look to him to take Britain out of the dark ages and bring, not just light, but normality back into this god forsaken place we find ourselves in boxing. Hype with good cause surrounded British boxers over the years and has sometimes been a good thing as well as bad. We have seen names like Freddie Mills, Randolph Turpin, Ricky Hatton, Heavyweights such as Henry Cooper, Brian London, Frank Bruno and Lennox Lewis. Quite shocking really to see how people look to him even though he has only been boxing for about 7 years. Yet AJ, or Anthony Joshua, has all the accolades people look for in a heavyweight. He is young (26) he is 6ft 6. As a professional he has a staggering 14 fight record with 14 wins by KO. After starting boxing in 2007 aged 18, AJ, the North London lad, started boxing for Finchley ABC. In only 3 years he had won the Haringey Box cup in 2009 and 2010. Also the senior ABA championships in 2010. That same year AJ turned down a £50,000 deal to turn pro to represent GB. In it to make a name for himself, AJ became the
all British champion that same year. In the following year he became the European amateur boxing champion with 2 wins and 1 loss. In 2011 he was named Amateur boxer of the year by the boxing writers club of Great Britain. During 2012 he represented the country at the Olympic Games at 91kg Becoming an Olympic boxing champion opened windows for the boy giant and to reward him for services to boxing by appointing him an (MBE) Member of the British Empire in 2013. July 24th 2013 Matchroom sports confirmed to the press Joshua had signed a professional contract with them and has never looked back. He recently popped into Birmingham at an event staged by BOXFROG promotions. 800 people attended the event at The Northfork Hotel on Birmingham’s Hagley Road & AJ made sure everybody who attended got a warm welcome. Former World boxing champions Richie Woodall, John H Stracey & Rob Norton attended the event alongside Irish champion Joe Egan. I spoke with AJ and interviewed him before the show. He came across a very humble person and quitepeople friendly. He wasn’t brash and spoke with a kind heart. He wanted to be a basketball player as a kid and never thought about boxing until he went with his pal to the gym.

This competition is made up of one player from each team in the Warwickshire County Parks Bowls Association leagues. That player is selected because they are top of the averages for the season in their particular team. Sally played 3 games in all to clench the title of Champion of Champions. The first female bowler ever to do so. Sally started bowling when she was 11 years old. During the summer holidays Barbara Partington invited 6 girls up to the bowling green to learn how to crown green bowl. Over the years Sally bowled for Coleshill Social Club in various league games, junior bowls compe-
titions and later progressed to senior bowls competitions at Coleshill Social Club (in club competitions) and over many districts covered by the various leagues she bowled in. These include the Erdington & District Bowling League, the South Birmingham Ladies Bowling League and the Warwickshire County Parks Bowls Association. When Coleshill joined the Warwickshire County Parks Bowls Association Sally applied to play for the County but was told that the British Parks Bowls Association did not allow female players to represent their County. Both Shane Fardon (Competitions Secretary) and Mike McDarby (Chairman/ Secretary) of the Warwickshire County Parks Bowls Association have put every effort into getting this rule changed but, so far, to no avail.

THE Warwickshire Parks season came to an exciting conclusion at Water Orton BC on Saturday 26th September, with 12 of the 20 teams represented in the Champion of Champions competition on a beautiful, sunny afternoon.
The standard was high from the start; the first game – coincidentally – featured the champions from the two newest additions to the League, with Geoff Cliff (Goldieslie) working hard to overcome a spirited challenge from Des Court (Coleshill Social B) 21-13. At the same time Ray Betham (Deers Leap), was having a feeling of Deja-vu playing Jenny Vaughan (Solihull Marsh Lane) as they had met on the opening day of the season! Ray prevailed again, but Jenny played well to cut the margin to 21-12. Game three pitched Geoff Bird (Bakelite), the Division 1 averages winner, against Alan Oliver (Mere Green). Geoff held off Alan’s early pressure before finding his weight on a shorter mark to run out 21-10 against a worthy opponent. The last of the opening round games was a real war of attrition between Mick Martin (Ye Olde Knowle) and Trish Gough (RSCBL B). After a pretty even start Trish scored in flurries to open a 17-7 lead. Mick came back to level at 19-19, but Trish then secured a much-needed 2 to grab her place in the last 8. The Quarter Finals continued the trend for hard fought contests as the four first-round byes joined the competition, including the two home green qualifiers, each carrying the designated 2 shot handicap to combat their anticipated home advantage. Kevin Hackett (Water Orton A) quickly found himself under pressure from the experienced left-hander
Phil Macdonald (Towers), who had won on both his League visits to the green in 2015. Phil moved into a 12-5 lead, and although Kevin worked hard and led briefly at 14-13, Phil always seemed to have the answers as he edged home 21-17. The second game in the top half of the draw pitched the two top two bowlers in the Division 2 averages together – with a combined record of 23 wins in 24 League games – as Geoff Cliff faced Ray Betham. There were never more than 4 shots between them, Geoff edged ahead in the 6th end and managed to hold on as the game ebbed and flowed to claim a fine 21-18 win. Game 3 saw Trish Gough, possibly suffering from her extended first round efforts, return to the green against the in-form Geoff Bird, who showed some if his best form on his way to a comfortable 21-7 win. The last game in the round saw another ‘Water Orton v left hander’ contest as their B team champion, Val Groves, faced Sally Jerrard-Dinn (Coleshill Social A). Val quickly wiped out the 2 shot handicap, but Sally came back to build a 16-10 lead. Val levelled at 16-16, but two 2’s saw Sally on the brink of the win. Val was in no mood to give in and closed the gap to 1920 before Sally made it through to the Semi Finals 21-19. As the last four took to the green there was lively debate amongst the healthy number of spectators over who would make it to the Final, let alone emerge as the Champion. Geoff Cliff bounced back from losing the opening end to Phil Macdonald by securing five 2’s in succession and gain control at 101. Although Phil tried everything he knew, Geoff had all the answers as he secured his place in the Final by a 21-7 margin that did not do justice to Phil’s efforts. The game between Geoff Bird and Sally Jerrard-Dinn was a real cat-and-mouse affair as fortunes swung one way then the other.
Both players were scoring in batches - Geoff’s opening 3 shots were answered by a run of 6 for Sally, then 4 to Geoff were matched by 4 to Sally, who now held a 10-7 lead. After a single to Geoff, Sally made what proved to be a decisive break of 7 shots to lead 17-8, and although Geoff fought back to trail 15-18 that was as close as he was allowed to get as Sally held on for a hard-earned 21-17 win. After a short break, the two Finalists Geoff Cliff (Goldieslie) and Sally Jerrard-Dinn (Coleshill Social A) – made their way to the start, and the game was underway. Geoff won the opening end, but quickly found himself under pressure as Sally hit top form to race to a 9-1 lead. In fairness to Geoff, he really wasn’t doing anything wrong or playing badly, Sally had simply found another level. After a brief flurry when Geoff reduced the margin to 4-11, Sally was quickly back in control and bowled superbly to secure a 21-4 win, and claim the title of Warwickshire County Parks CGBA Champion of Champions 2015. I believe Sally is the first ever female Champion of Champions winner, and her record of 25 wins from 26 league games over the last two seasons confirms how well deserved the title is. My thanks go to the members and officials of Water Orton BC for their excellent hospitality, to the players and the large number of spectators who created a fantastic atmosphere around the green all afternoon, and to everyone who helped with marking & measuring throughout the afternoon (the event would be much harder to run without your help!). The assistance and experience of our Association President, Dave Spenceley, who was once again there from start to finish, was also greatly appreciated. Congratulations to Sally, and let’s look forward to another great competition at Coleshill Social in September 2016!
