Treasury Minister visits business breaking into the aerospace industry
The Coleshill Post
Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury Priti Patel visited Coleshill in Warwickshire recently to find out how a local business is breaking into the aerospace industry.
Momentum Engineering Ltd is a leading supplier of high-precision components for use in the automotive, railway, construction, petro-chemical, electronics and defence sectors. Now,
with the help of government funding, it is building new links with the aerospace industry. In 2014, the company received £50,000 as part of a grant from the government through the Advanced Manufacturing Supply Chain Initiative (AMSCI). The company used the money to help fund a new Vertical Travelling Column (VTC) machine that has the precision required to manufacture components for use in aerospace.
Further supporting its move into the sector, in January the company received an AS9100 accreditation – an internationally recognised quality management standard for the aerospace industry. Exchequer Secretary to the Treasury, Priti Patel, said: “It’s fantastic to be here today to celebrate the success of a company that is diversifying into new sectors, allowing it to grow and provide more jobs for lo-

Simon Toon, Band Sergeant of Coleshill Town Band and ex-Royal Naval Officer, led a vigil at the Parish War Memorial for the first of Coleshill’s WW1 casualties: Private William Gallagher, 2nd Battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. A vigil is being led by Simon to commemorate each of Coleshill’s fallen men on the 100th anniversary of their death over the four years of the WW1 centenary. During the vigils Simon outlines each man’s connection with Coleshill, family life, military service and the circumstances of his death. A period of silent reflection follows and then a half-muffled bell is rung 100 times. Since Private Gallagher’s commemoration, vigils have been held for Private Oliver Speake, Drummer Albert Gallagher, Able Seaman Joseph Tennant, Private James Aspley, Private John Wallace Palmer, and Captain Francis Campbell Norbury. Research on each of the 132 of Coleshill’s fallen WW1 sailors, soldiers and airmen is being carried out as part of the Coleshill Remembers project. The 132 names are remembered on four war memorials across the town, and research into the lives of these men is ongoing. Working as part of the Coleshill Remembers team, Simon is supported by local researcher Jane Veevers, who is also a member of Coleshill Town Band. Simon and Jane have identified 105 of these fallen Coleshill men so far. Further information about the research so far can be found on the online Roll of Honour at: http://www. stitwarwickshire.uk/ColeshillRemembersWW1.php Coleshill Remembers would love to hear from anyone who can contribute local WW1 stories or information about Coleshill’s fallen men and can be contacted via the website: www.coleshillremembers.co.uk Where possible these commemorations will be held at 8pm at the Parish War Memorial at St Peter’s and St Paul’s Church in Coleshill. On the rare occasions Simon cannot be in Coleshill he will be holding the vigil at a war memorial near to where he is. Visit by the Archbishop of Canterbury to St. Nicholas Church, Curdworth
The Coleshill Post
The 850th anniversary of St. Nicholas Church, Curdworth was blessed by a visit from the Most Reverend and Right Honourable Justin Welby, Archbishop of Canterbury for a Service of Thanksgiving on Monday 23rd February 2015. He was received by many local and regional dignitaries at the church.
As the church bells pealed The Archbishop entered the candlelit church to the opening chorus of Vivaldi’s ‘Gloria in Excelsis Deo’ sung by the St. Nicholas Church choir. The Children’s Choir also sang several songs to the delight of the congregation. Although Archbishop Justin had already had a very busy day in Birmingham starting at 6.30 that morning, his address was full of humour. In his reflection, the Archbishop told the congregation to welcome strangers and foreigners into the church. He was impressed by the reading of the Bible texts by young people and children. For him it shows this church is continuing her witness for 850
years by including all age groups into the worship and is finding new ways of proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ in today’s context. He invited the church to work closely with the community and thus witness the love of Christ to all! He also said that he was touched by the Witness Stories read by the residents who told their personal stories about ‘Why I love going to my church.’ Following the service Archbishop Justin visited Curdworth Village Hall where he was welcomed by Mark Weatherley, Chair of Curdworth Parish Council on behalf of the Community and addressed from the stage by a choir from Curdworth Primary School singing a song reflecting community involvement and spirit. The Archbishop was then presented with a gift of a Christmas bauble by Sandra Bullivant

which was made by 92 year old Iris Clarke. He also visited a number of displays depicting Curdworth’s community activities including the Listening and the Caring Group, The Church Women’s Guild, the Sunday Club, the Women’s Institute and the Poetry Readers Group. The Revd. Joshva Raja, the Vicar, said afterwards “It has been a real privilege and honour to welcome the Archbishop to the Church of St. Nicholas in our celebratory year. The whole community has come together to make this a notable occasion for generations to come”. The church of St. Nicholas and Saint Peter-AD-Vincula was built in 1165 although there was probably a Saxon church on this site before. The Norman church, built of red sandstone, was not as long as it is today and was extended to include the bell tower in 1460 by Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick. The tower houses three bells and the 15th century Mary Bell was said to have been donated by a lonely traveller who was guided to Curdworth by the sound of a bell after being lost in the Forest of Arden.
How to save money on prescription costs NORTH Warwickshire CAB is teaming up with Healthwatch Warwickshire to highlight the savings that local residents can make on their NHS prescription charges.
If you are someone with an ongoing illness who is likely to need more than thirteen prescriptions in one year, you could save money by getting a Prescription Pre-Payment Certificate. Carol Musgrave, Manager of North Warwickshire CAB said, “If for example you are on three prescribed medicines each month, you could be losing more than £170 per year by not buying one of these certificates, help is also available for people on low incomes.” Chris Bain, Chief Executive of Healthwatch Warwickshire, whose organisation champions people’s views at a county level about our health and social care services added, “It’s very much like buying a season ticket for a bus or a train, and when you apply you can ask for your certificate to be back dated by a month and can then get a refund.” For more information about Prescription Pre-Payment Certificates you should call 0845 850 0030 or go online www. nhsbsa.nhs.uk/ppc
‘It’s important we support local charities and voluntary groups’ Town Council sets up £10,000 grant fund for local charities and groups Cllr Adam Farrell
Coleshill Town Councillor
REGULAR COLUMN
ITS amazing to know we have over 50 local charities, community groups and voluntary organisations in Coleshill. We’re lucky that we have people who care enough about our town to bring people together to socialise and help each other. I’m a trustee of three local charities and involved in 2 community groups. I know how important these charities and groups are to the local community. Without groups like Coleshill Civic Society, U3A, the Coleshill W.I, the Coleshill Stroke Club, Coleshill Drama Group, the Coleshill Community Partnership and others, many hundreds of people would be worse off. Being able to meet other locals, engage in something you enjoy and often make lifelong friends, makes our town a good place to live. One of the best things about these groups is that they don’t cost the earth. They’re good value for money when you look at the difference they make. They do however cost something and where local councils can help, they should. Since I joined the Town Council in 2011 I have continually argued that the Council should set aside a pot of money that local groups and charities can apply to for support and projects that have a positive impact on the town. I’m delighted that the recent budget passed by the Town Council includes a £10,000 grant fund from which charities and local groups can benefit from over the next year. Political life is often belittled by the petty arguments and lack of action. This new grant fund shows that politics can make a difference by helping the voluntary and community sector continue to offer great support and services to the community. I’m coming to the end of my first term as a Town Councillor and in that time I have met hundreds of people involved in helping others through local groups. I want to thank them for all they do. I also thank them for the way they’ve helped me to understand the needs of their members and the difference they can make to the town. This £10,000 can not be a one-off, it must continue and I will fight to ensure it becomes an annual pot of money for Coleshill.

NORTH Warwickshire Borough Council is continuing its fight against the High Speed 2 rail project by pressing its case again in London recently
SMALL business owners from around North Warwickshire were last week invited to take part in a question and answer session with prospective local MP Craig Tracey and MEP for the West Midlands Anthea McIntyre in a breakfast meeting at the Coleshill Hotel.
Discussions ranged from the importance of giving younger people in schools more business and entrepreneurial skills, the EU’s role in creating jobs and supporting small business owners. The local business owners were also able to raise the challenges that they face with their local Parliamentary Candidate and MEP. Craig Tracey, who runs his own small business, an insurance brokers, said: “It was great for other local businesses to be able to question Anthea McIntyre

MEP on the role of the European Union in relation to small businesses in the UK. At the moment UK businesses are leading the way in Europe in driving our economy to growth with more jobs; in particular in North Warwickshire & Bedworth unemployment is at a record low – down 73% since January 2010. “I am pleased that local business owners raised the importance of skills for young people. As someone who has employed apprentices in the past I have seen first-hand how vital it is to give younger people the skills, qualifications and experience they need to be succeed in life. “We passed on a lot of ideas and experiences to Anthea to take back to the EU, including the support that small businesses need – we have seen the Government recently announce £15bn worth of investments in the city deal
including a business investment fund.” After the meeting Miss McIntyre said: "I have run small businesses myself, and I know what the frustrations as well as the potential can be. If we can remove the burden of regulation from the shoulders of small business we can free up valuable time for their entrepreneurial driving spirit to focus on more productive aspects of the business. “I am always keen to meet and hear from local businesses as they know first-hand what is needed to improve the employability of those looking for work. It is abundantly clear that schools, colleges and universities need to work closely with businesses to ensure we have an education system ‘Fit for purpose’ and able to deliver qualified personal for the current and future jobs market”
Officers from the Council will meet with top officials from HS2 Limited to discuss the Council’s fears that close to £1m of local taxpayers’ money will be lost as a result of the destruction and disturbance that HS2 will cause in the Borough. The Council, which is leading the fight locally against the scheme, presented its case in Parliament in October and MPs showed some sympathy with the points being made. HS2 were asked to look at the matter more seriously and the meeting on Friday is to discuss their conclusions. In addition, the Borough Council will continue to press for more protection for residents of the Borough particularly during the construction of the line. The Council will ask HS2 for the staff costs of monitoring compliance with the various assurances won by the Borough Council for the construction phase. The Borough Council, together with local action groups, are concerned with the suggestion that HS2 can be relied upon to police the construction themselves and are urging HS2 to provide independent assessment. Councillor Brian Moss (Lab), the Council’s HS2 spokesman said: ‘The Borough Council’s fight against this expensive, wasteful project is constant and continues. Up to £1m could be taken out of local funds unless we get compensation for the effect of HS2 on existing North Warwickshire businesses. In addition, the suggestion that HS2 can be left to judge for themselves whether they are constructing the line properly is outrageous. We need an independent view on the work and it would be further injustice if the people disturbed by the works had to pay for this themselves through the Council’s funding.’ Councillor Tilly May (Con), the Opposition HS2 spokesman added: ‘We continue to offer unanimous support to the Council’s fight against HS2. There is no need or business case for the scheme and we are very concerned that the very communities most affected by HS2 will suffer this additional financial blow.’

Hundreds of local students will benefit from cut in tuition fees from £9000 to £6,000
The Coleshill Post
“Hundreds of University students in North Warwickshire and Bedworth and their families are set to benefit from the Labour pledge to cut tuition fees from £9,000 to £6,000,” said Mike O’Brien.
This reduction will be funded by ending the extra Pension Tax Relief given to those earning over £150 a year, so that everyone get equal Pension Tax Relief. Labour’s has now announced its three key pledges on education. The party will reduce university tuition fees to £6,000; guarantee an apprenticeship for every school leaver who gets the basic grades, and create smaller class sizes for 5, 6 and 7 year olds. Mike says, “Today’s young people get a worse deal than previous generations. Yet most families aspire for the next generation to do better than the last. The coalition decision to triple tuition fees to £9,000 has hit aspiration and left
young people with massive debts. The average student will graduate with £44,000 of debt! Three quarters of them will never be able to afford to repay the full loan – having tens of thousands of pounds of debt hanging over them into their 50s. They will struggle to get a mortgage. “The current system is bad for students and bad for taxpayers because the taxpayer has to meet the cost of writing off the debt. By 2030-31, the current student fee system is set to add £281 billion to the national debt. This can be done without hurting any pensioner, the student or the taxpayer.” From September 2016, Labour will cut the tuition fee cap from £9,000 to £6,000 for all undergraduates and provide additional grants for students from lower-income backgrounds. Cutting the tuition fee cap will reduce graduate debt by nearly £9,000 over three years. There will also be an increase
student grants by £400, so that the full grant increases from around £3,400 to around £3,800, benefiting all students with a household income up to £42,620. More than half of students will benefit. Labour say the policy is fully funded and it will reduce government debt by £40 billion by 203031. Over the next Parliament it will mean over £10 billion less debt. It will be funded by restricting Pension Tax Relief by £2.9 billion for those on the highest incomes by treating them other people. At the moment, people with incomes above £150,000 can get extra tax relief on pension contributions at a rate of 45 per cent. This is more than twice that of basic rate taxpayers. It means the top 1 per cent of taxpayers receive 7 per cent of all Pension Tax Relief. The rate of relief for those with incomes of over £150,000 will in future be held to 20 per cent – the same as basic rate taxpayers. The annual cap on the amount that people can put into their pensions tax free will be £30,000 a year for everyone. The lifetime allowances will be £1 million; which is more than most people can afford to put into their pension pots.
CRAIG Tracey welcomes new Growth Deal funding – ‘more jobs and security for hardworking people in North Warwickshire & Bedworth’
CRAIG Tracey, the local Conservative Candidate for May’s general election, has welcomed the Government’s announcement of additional funding to support businesses and infrastructure in North Warwickshire– helping to create 4,000 jobs and support businesses. Coventry and Warwickshire Local Enterprise
Partnership (LEP) for North Warwickshire & Bedworth, has been allocated an additional £15.3m. This brings Coventry and Warwickshire’s total allocation of Growth Deal funding to £89.4m. Craig Tracey commented: “This £15.3m of extra funding is fantastic news for local people in North Warwickshire & Bedworth. Decisions on how this money is spent are be-
ing made by local people who are best placed to ensure it makes a real difference. Projects like the local business fund and investment in local colleges will help bring growth and prosperity to our area. “This Growth Deal is a key part of our longterm economic plan to secure a better future for the hardworking people of North Warwickshire & Bedworth Its funding will help local businesses create the jobs we need so more hardworking families can have the security of a regular pay packet, and will help equip our young people with the skills they need to get on in life.” New investment in local projects from the scheme will help create upto 4,000 jobs whilst supporting local businesses. Growth Deals bring together government funding for investment in infrastructure, housing, and other projects and put it in a single pot, which is placed in the hands of local authorities and businesses to invest – because they are best placed to know how to deliver local jobs and growth. As part of its long-term plan to build a stronger economy, across the country the Government has announced a further £1 billion of funding for Growth Deals, which comes in addition to £6 billion from the Local Growth
fund announced in July last year. The Prime Minister announced these measures today. David Cameron said: “Giving local communities the power and the money to unlock growth and development and make the spending decisions that work for them is a key part of our long-term economic plan to secure a brighter future for Britain and ensure a recovery for all. “Local Conservatives such as Craig Tracey who is a tireless campaigner for North Warwickshire will welcome these projects, which will make an important difference to the area. “That’s what Growth Deals are all about, backing local people and investing in the infrastructure, housing and skills that will drive forward local economies, create more jobs and opportunities for hardworking people and supercharge all parts of our country.” Greg Clark MP, Business Minister, said: “For Britain to fulfil its potential every part of the country must be an engine of growth. “Our successful programme of City Deals and Growth Deals have put local people in the driving seat as the local economy powers ahead. This billion-pound expansion of Growth Deals fuels the momentum that is now underway in our local economies.”

CATS Protection’s cleverly adapted barn/ farm cat ‘temporary living quarters’ cages are proving to be the cats whiskers with hotel owners Gillian Etheridge and Steve Cuddy.
They run the Grimscote Manor Hotel in Coleshill and have just taken delivery of three feral cats – Caramel, Ginger and Tiger to keep any unwelcome mice-like visitors in their grounds at bay. And the specially adapted temporary homes where the cats start their ‘new live-in job’ makes feed and change-of-litter-tray times simple and safe. As the new cat-carers say 'it's no problem at all – the equipment works brilliantly’. Welfare Officer with the North Birmingham branch Shaki McFarland and carpentry-wiz volunteer Tony Huggins put their heads together to work out how to adapt existing cages, and it was clear what was needed was an extra panel, a divider with a cat-flap type addition, to make life easier for the daily farm or stable carer and to minimise any distress to the cat. And this is

just for the first three weeks. Soon after puss gets accustomed to his country pad and is set free to keep the mice down and live life to the full. Tony first made a prototype and, after a few tweaks, it seemed the purr-fect solution. So he drove off to the wood yard, bought more plywood and made two more. And early in November he and Shaki set off to Grimscote Manor to deliver cat number 3 in ‘home’ number 3. Says Tony: “It was great to see how well they work – cats are cosy and happy and the hotel management confirm how easy it is to care for them while they are getting acclimatised. They’re able to empty litter trays and replenish food without the cats shooting off.” And hotel owners Gillian and Steve agree. “We’re delighted to have the cats and very happy with the trial. It’s an excellent piece of equipment and works really well. It means we know the cats are always safe. Before, when we opened the ‘main’ door of the cage, cats could escape, which was a worry. We’ve still got Pudding – our first CP cat – but needed more to keep all our grounds vermin-free. We’re expanding soon, adding ten more bedrooms and an orangery, spa and conference facilities, so we expect and hope the new cats will do the business!” Shaki ‘only put the idea to Tony the day after he retired from Birmingham City Council, and within 3 days he’d made the first one’! Adds Shaki: “The welfare team is thrilled with the adaptation, and we hope it means even more hotel owners, farmers or stables will come forward to take on feral cats and give them a home. We’ve made it so easy for them to care for the cats during those initial weeks while the ‘mouser moggie’ gets used to his new surroundings. Then he can be let loose to find his own dinner, keep the vermin down, and return to his safe haven to crash-out when his work is done.”

Best wishes Jacquie Coombes, Clerk to the Parish Council 0121-749-2445 | clerk@wopc.org.uk GROUNDSMAN
Winter is almost upon here THE weather this year has so far has been fairly good; this is good news for the football pitch, which is in a good condition for the middle of winter.
Unfortunately there seems to have been a big increase in people not cleaning up after their dogs. This not only gives responsible dog owners a bad name, but can be extremely dangerous for young children. Should a child have dog mess on their hand and rub their eyes it can result in blindness. I would like again to thank the many people who pick up the litter around the Village, this does make a massive difference as none of us want to live with litter scattered everywhere. We do have litter pickers available if there are people out there who wish to help out.

HS2 UPDATE
Huge turnout for HS2 Meeting THERE was a heavily attended Village Meeting held on Saturday 31st January in the Methodist Hall.
The meeting was arranged by John Warren Chair of the Water Orton Stop HS2 Action Group (WOAG) and North Warwickshire Borough council (NWBC) councillors Ray Payne and Allan Holland. John brought everyone up-to-date on WOAG’s actions on our behalf up to his attendance at the Select Committee Hearing in November. He then further explained what was known about HS2’s deal with Warwickshire county Council (WCC) with regard to moving our primary school. It was stated that HS2 has agreed to pay £3.5m towards the WCC’s costs of building a new school, probably on a site believed to be adjacent to Plank Lane. This will not be the complete cost, although some sort of agreement has been reached that construction of the HS2 Birmingham spur lines within the vicinity of the village will not begin until the children move to the new school premises. This will likely be sometime in 2018. The old school will remain untouched until HS2 Phase 1 construction is completed, probably in 2023, at which point the site will probably be sold for property development. This is all dependent on the outcome of the Select Committee hearings, which will take around 12 months to hear all 1900 petitions. Then HS2’s third hearing in the Commons has to be passed, before being heard in the Lords. John stressed that at this point we will have our last opportunity to petition for mitigation before Royal Assent of HS2 in 2016. Due to the deal to move the school our petition to move HS2 has been undermined, although WOAG
will continue with its efforts in fighting HS2 construction traffic clogging our village with a projected 340+ daily HGV and van movements for the 3 – 5 years of HS2 Phase 1, in addition to the 38 weeks of construction for the new school beforehand. Councillor Ray Payne then explained what had been achieved so far with regard to moving the Old Salts Rugby Club. Plans are at an early stage to find a new site, with a potential of moving the club to 3 fields adjacent to Vicarage Lane / Coleshill Road if the land could be bought and the 60 feet high HS2 embankment over the motorway doesn’t infringe too much on this possible site. Time is short to finalise finding a new site, as new pitches take 2 years to consolidate before they can be played upon. Finally Councillor Allan Holland expressed his concern on the impact HS2 was having on the village, expressing particular concern on what will happen to the existing school site once the new school is built. The general consensus of those who spoke at the meeting was that after the way WCC dealt with HS2 without public consultation with villagers, they should be forced to engage with us going forward on matters relating to the existing and new school site. A new action group “Save The Village” is being formed whose terms of reference will focus on ensuring matters such as keeping the original Victorian school House that forms part of the existing school, ensuring size of playing fields at the new school match existing, restricting vehicular access via Mickle Meadow if the new school site is adjacent to Plank Lane and prohibiting any redevelopment on either site above 2 stories. Villagers wishing to join should contact Allan or Ray until the new group is formalised.

The Coleshill Post - February 2015 - Issue 19
Coleshill County Councillor Peter Fowler said:
North Warwickshire MP Dan Byles said:
“Although crime has fallen and continues to fall locally and nationally, residents are still concerned of the implication of part night street lights. Cllrs Peter Fowler and Joan Lea have worked to ensure a solution which gets the lights back on for local people and will save money in the long-term. They should be commended for their decision.”
Parliamentary Candidate Mike O’Brien said:
“The Conservative County Councillors have just voted down a motion to switch the streetlights back on but the MPs have claimed the lights will be switched on. Their position is as clear as mud. Have the Tory MPs adopted the Labour policy to turn the streetlights on immediately? In which case I welcome the conversion. Or do they want a delay for some reason?”
Two years ago, what seemed like an April Fools Day joke gone wrong became a reality for residents across Warwickshire. On April 1st 2013 80% of streetlights across Coleshill and the rest of Warwickshire were switched off overnight. The ruling Conservative majority on the County Council said there was no other option. Two years on it seems the Conservatives might have had a change of heart – or have they? . Coleshill’s County Councillor, Peter Fowler has said, “Some residents have wanted the lights to be switched back on full time. I have listened and have worked hard to ensure that we can do this with LED lighting.” Local Labour Councillors have questioned the Conservatives change of heart because only a couple of weeks ago they voted down a proposal from Labour to switch the streetlights back on. They have been urged to come clean on their plans for street lighting. Cllr Harry Taylor said “I was surprised when I read the comments from Cllr Peter Fowler and the Tory Parliamentary Candidate. Two years ago Mr Fowler went to Warwick to vote to turn our lights off. He’s reaffirmed that commitment to lights out by voting against turning the
streetlights back on 4 times since 2013. Now just a few weeks before an election he claims to have seen the light but has he really? “I think Cllr Fowler should have checked with the Leader of Warwickshire County Council before he threw together his electioneering press release. The official Warwickshire Conservative website only says the “administration agreed with all political groups that an investment opportunity for LED lighting across the County should be funded.” The official County Council policy is that investment in LED lighting will be speeded up but there is no commitment to put the lights back on. What will actually happen to our street lights seems unclear, the County Council have not yet published the budget that was agreed in early February and no further information appears on the County Council website. The Conservative Parliamentary Candidate, Craig Tracey said “I think Conservatives on the County Council have come up with a fine solution to the street lighting debate.” But Labour Borough Councillor Dominic Ferro said, “It’s not clear what their solution is. We know our County Councillor voted to turn off our streetlights. Now the election is approaching he claims to have heard the strong demands
from us and residents to change his mind! Isn’t it funny that some politicians get better hearing when a tight election is coming up? I see Mr Fowlers comments as ‘Smoke & Mirrors’ and I know the residents won’t be fooled by his press release. If he had listened to residents then he would not have voted to turn the lights off in the first place. The Labour position is clear; we would turn the lights on straight away and invest in LED lighting whilst our current lights remain on.” Shustoke Parish Councillor, Carol Fox was a Conservative County Councillor back in 2013. Carol said, “The switching off our streetlights was wrong. In 2013 the Conservative Leadership said that in areas where residents wanted them on or in areas of greater need the lights could be switched back on. In reality its almost impossible to get a light back on as I’ve found out on numerous occasions. I take a straight forward approach to life so put simple the whole policy has been a complete shambles. Its one of the reasons I joined Labour in 2014 as they are the only party in Warwickshire who will switch our lights back on.” It seems we are still in the dark over street lights.

“The purpose of switching to part night lighting was to save millions of pounds and to reduce carbon emissions. However, some residents have wanted the lights to be switched back on full time. I have listened and have worked hard to ensure that we can do this with LED lighting in a financially viable way whilst continuing to reduce emissions. I have been passing on residents’ concerns to my colleagues at County Hall and I am pleased that these have been listened to. I hope this shows that local Cllrs do stand up for residents and do act on their wishes.”

At Craig’s invitation, Robert Goodwill came to the local area to see for himself how HS2 will affect North Warwickshire communities. Local campaigner Craig, who is against the HS2 project said: “It’s important that resident’s concerns and the direct impact on our communities is fully appreciated. We are one of the most badly affect areas in the country along the proposed HS2 line. I took Robert Goodwill along the A4097 to the point of where the Railhead would be, and would run through local houses and businesses. This is the very local impact of HS2 for families – their homes or jobs could be lost.” Minister Robert Goodwill said: “We have just announced a new compensation package which includes the Need to Sell Scheme – the need to sell scheme – this scheme does not have a boundary and is available to owner-occupiers who have a compelling reason to sell their house (for example this might be as a result of job relocation or ill health) but are unable to do
so because of HS2. The government will pay the full, unblighted value for these properties. This scheme replaces the Phase One exceptional hardship scheme (EHS) and those EHS applications that have not been consider by the panel will automatically be transferred to the need to sell scheme. This scheme is available in both urban and rural areas. This will be the most generous compensation package for any construction project in the UK.” Speaking about the latest compensation package Craig Tracey commented: “Of course we will continue the local fight against the scheme. However we must also ensure that mitigation and support for resident’s affected are in place and are fair for the ordeal that they are going through. The latest announcements include an express purchase – for those people living closest to the line. Under this scheme owner-occupiers may be able to sell their home to the government, if they wish to do so at its full unblighted market value, plus 10% (up to £49,000) and reasonable moving expenses, including stamp duty. “There is also voluntary purchase - for people in rural areas outside the safeguarding area and up to 120 metres away from the line (this is the area defined as the rural support zone). Owner-occupiers in this area will be able to sell their home to the government for its full unblighted value at any time up until 1 year after Phase One first opens for public use.” Ian Thomas, Chairman of the local HS2 Action Group said: “Kingsbury Action Group and Kingsbury Parish Council jointly petitioned against the Railhead because of the lack of an environmental study, the impact on the local roads nearby which already sees a large amount of traffic and also because we want to see HS2 engaging more with the residents who live alongside where the railhead is proposed; it is time they were treated with more respect.”

Village flood scheme problem leads to promise by Shadow Minister DUE to a bureaucratic mix up, an £8.5m flood scheme protecting a North Warwickshire village has been left unfinished with two gaps in the defences through which water can flood.
The village of Whitacre Heath has been repeatedly flooded in recent years and a flood prevention scheme has now been put in place, however a railway line runs through the flood defenses and the defenses have not been connected to the raised railway embankment, leaving two five metre gaps between the defenses and the railway line. Although since last year there have been mounds of earth nearby ready to fill the gaps in. The reason appears to be that the required consents to link the flood defenses to a railway embankment have not yet been obtained from Network Rail. The delay has lasted months. The contractors have now left the area unable to finalise the scheme and villagers have been left wondering whether the scheme will be finished before the next potential flood. The Labour Shadow Environment Minister Huw Arranca Davies was in the Midlands on Thursday (5th February). He had been the Environment Minister under Labour and was asked by Mike O’Brien to visit the scheme and to advise on sorting the problem out. He was very surprised by the gaps and said that when he was the Minister, this would have been sorted out quickly. The Shadow Minister said, “This looks like a very good flood prevention scheme marred by these two peculiar gaps in the defences. They need to be filled. The consents should have been obtained early in the process. “When I was the Environment Minister before 2010 local MP’s would come to me with these kinds of things and we could normally sort them out fairly quickly. This ought to be done in the next few weeks, but if it were not, I want an in-
coming Labour Minister to deal with it quickly. “I just hope there is no flooding in the next few weeks or villagers will be rightly furious.” At the request of the Parish Council Mike O’Brien intervened with the Environment Agency Chairman Lord Chris Smith last year when there were delays in the work on the scheme. The work on the scheme was largely completed in the summer. Mike said, “Villagers are very pleased with the scheme but not the gaps. Huw will probably be the Minister responsible for flooding issues if Labour wins the election so it was helpful to have him visit the village and see for himself. This issue needs to be dealt with. I am contacting Lord Chris Smith again, to ask him to help. He did last time. It would be tragic if the winter rain and snow resulted in flooding in Whitacre Heath after the spending of over £8m; all because of a gap in the dyke.” Independent Parish Councillor Tony Rumble, the Vice Chairman of the local Parish Council, showed Huw Arranca Davies and Mike O’Brien around the scheme. Cllr Rumble told him, “We are pleased with the work, but we just need it finished. The workers have left leaving mounds of earth to fill in the gaps. We don’t want the village flooded now. I was pleased Mike O’Brien brought the Shadow Minister along. We need this thing dealt with.” However, the Shadow Minister was pleased with the news that another issue facing the village has been dealt with. The village needed a pumping station to pump out water from within the defences and a Pathfinder Grant of £32,000 has been obtained to create the pumping station. Huw Arranca Davies was the Minister for the Environment before 2010 who created the Pathfinder Grant Scheme aimed at smaller flood prevention projects so he was particularly delighted that the scheme had helped Whitacre Heath.

Year 11 Practice Interviews . . . You’re hired!
We believe it is important to prepare our young people for the world of work by ensuring that they recognise, develop and apply their skills for enterprise and employability; undertake tasks and activities set in work contexts; learn about working practices and environments; and learn from contact with people who work.
On Thursday the 5th of Febuary all of our current year 11 students underwent a practice interview with an employer from TSB Bank, Kuehne + Nagel and the HR department of The Coleshill School. Students were prepared via an extended assembly and then tasked with completing a Job Application form, to be used for the purpose of their 15 minute interview with an employer. They all dressed to impress, as you will see from the photographs. They were called in for their formal interview by each individual employer, who then grilled them, asking questions such as, “tell me about yourself”, “what are your strengths and weaknesses”. This was then followed by a short verbal feedback on their performance overall with reference also to their completed Job Application form. Our students welcomed this opportunity, mostly with en-
thusiasm, some in trepidation. A number of students were extremely nervous about the concept of an interview with a business colleague but their feedback has been incredibly positive, some are even asking for another opportunity to repeat the experience. All students and their parents/carers will receive an official feedback form which comments on the interview and application form itself with useful information to help them in the future. These sessions provide extremely valuable learning experiences for our students, and we hope that these will contribute positively towards equipping them as they move towards further education and/or the world of work. The event was extremely successful and every employer, without exception, was very impressed with all of our students who not only presented themselves very professionally but proved to be excellent ambassadors for themselves and the school. Many comments were made upon how very smartly dressed, mature and polite all students were. Our participating employers went above and beyond, despite the time restraints to ensure all students understood the importance of completing an immaculate application form and how to deliver an outstanding interview. Our students certainly had a day they will never forget and learnt very important lessons regarding the application and interview process in the fast moving business world. The feedback from both students and staff has been incredible. Every single student who I spoke to after the event stated how much they had enjoyed the whole process and how valuable they had found the experience. Well done year 11! We are very grateful to all businesses and personnel who participated this year and for their support of our Year 11 Interview Skill Programme. Without their generosity of time, expertise and professionalism we would not be able to provide our students with this invaluable experience and opportunity.

We will remember them AS part of our displays this year for Remembrance and the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of WW1, we were able to include a Role of Honour of many of the ‘old boys’ of Coleshill school who are commemorated on the plaque in our school hall. This was made possible by the on-going research by Mr Simon Toon and Dr Sarah Jane Veevers.
Simon served as a commissioned officer in the Royal Navy before joining Warwickshire Constabulary. He currently runs his own software development company in Coleshill where he has lived for 22 years and is the current Band Sergeant for Coleshill Town Band. He is a member of the Coleshill Remembers World War I committee and has co-ordinated the research into all of Coleshill’s casualties of the Great War. Jane is a Genealogist, a Local History Researcher and member of Coleshill Town Band and has been working on the Coleshill Remembers Roll of Honour for the past twelve months. So far four WW1 Memorials have been identified in Coleshill, and each of the fallen men recorded on them is being carefully researched to produce family histories and war service information, including finding photographs of the
men where possible. There are 132 names across the four memorials and to date 105 of those men have been researched in detail. Jane is keen to trace relatives of the fallen men and looks forward to hearing from anyone with information related to WW1 in Coleshill and the surrounding villages. She can be contacted via her website www.veeversresearch.co.uk. Simon carries out a vigil, with the lighting of a candle on the 100 year anniversary of the death of every casualty listed on any of the four Coleshill War Memorials. This takes place at the Coleshill Parish War Memorial at 8pm on each date. By the end of 2018, Simon will have carried out in excess of 100 vigils. Simon hosts and runs the Coleshill Online Roll of Honour, detailing all the research that has been done on our local casualties and it can be viewed at: http://www.stitwarwickshire.uk/ColeshillRemembersWW1.php. As part of his work on the Coleshill Remembers project and his work with Coleshill Town Band, Simon was awarded a North Warwickshire Borough Council Community Service Award in September 2014. We were honoured to be asked to join them to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the death of Captain Frances Campbell Norbury, who attended the Coleshill Grammar School and was killed under friendly fire on 8th January 1915. Below is some information about him.
Who was Francis Campbell Norbury
FRANCIS Campbell Norbury was born on 16th January 1882 in Stratford-on-Avon to Thomas and Eliza. He attended the Coleshill Grammar School, the Oundle School and went on to attend St John’s College, Cambridge. A serious illness and operation prevented him sharing in many of the ordinary games for a great part of his boyhood, but he won a place in the Cricket XI in his last year, and was one
of the best fives players the School has ever produced. After taking his degree [at Cambridge] in the Classical Tripos he returned to Oundle as a master in 1904. Norbury joined the Cambridge Officer Training Corps, and took to the work keenly. On coming to Oundle, where the corps had been in existence for a year, he at once joined as Colour-Sergeant, but soon took a commission and in due time rose to be senior captain in the autumn of 1914. In camp he was invaluable, always ready to undertake any irksome job that might make things more comfortable for the contingent. Keen as he was on tennis, cricket and swimming, he sacrificed his summer term to the musketry of the corps. He joined the Reserve Battalion of the KRRC. Within a few weeks he was selected to take a large draft of men to France. He first served in France on 24th November 1914 and after a few more weeks was in the trenches in command of a company of the 1st Battalion. On January 8th, after a hard day's work, he was sleeping with some other officers in a "dug-out". One of our own shells burst short, killing him and fatally wounding two others. He is buried in Le Touret Military Cemetary in France. He was 32 years old.

DON’T FORGET
MOTHER’S DAY
Over the last half term five groups of year 7 and 8 students have planned, organised and battled it out to engineer a mechanism for transporting an egg across a chasm without it breaking.
You may have seen some of the groups working on their ideas in the canteen or around school, where they were spotted making final adjustments to their catapults and pulley systems. The students had five weeks to design and build a capsule for their egg and a method of transporting it, without it breaking of course. We had several trial runs, and unfortunately some eggs were hurt in the process! In this final week of term and the final STEM club of half term, the competition came to its conclusion, and two broken eggs later the results were in! The year 8 boys – Jack Johnson, Tom O’ Hagan, Jack Carter and Tom Allister came in first with their motorised pulley system and Lego built capsule followed by team ‘No Yolk’ consisting of Tyler Whitehouse, Charlie Glynn and Joe Hunt with their spoon catapult. Finally, the year 7 girls Charlotte Vervoort, Samantha Burkett, Jessica Duffy and Katelyn Hughes came third with their knitted pulley and eggcup system. STEM club, which is going from strength to strength runs every Monday from 3.10pm until 4pm and is open to all year groups. Why not come along next term and get involved? The latest news from Love Coleshill
The Coleshill Post
Discover Coleshill and Love Coleshill are working on a joint project to increase footfall to the High Street and promote local loyalty.
A series of seasonal markets will be held at the visitor centre to co-incide with the long-running ‘Bargains of Yesteryear’ the first of the markets to celebrate Spring will take place on Saturday 21st March at the Old Market Hall. Visitors are encouraged to ‘Step into Spring’ and take a walk around Coleshill. From the Market Hall on Church Hill where a selection of market traders will be offering crafts, goods and gifts for sale and from where you can buy your Love Coleshill Bag for Life. There will also be the regular stall such as Harry’s Records, Paul Higginson hand made silver Jewellery and visitors can then walk up the high street and take a look at the many independent shops that Coleshill is famous for, including hardware, electrical, hair and beauty, gifts, and of course a range of cafés selling delicious cakes, snacks and drinks. Making their way along the High Street to the Town Hall visitors can bag a bargain or two from the Bargains of Yesteryear stall holders who offer a huge array of crockery, books, jewellery and unusual items from yesteryear. So why note step into spring and take a walk around Coleshill on Saturday 21st March and enjoy all that Coleshill has to offer?
Please mind the gap WHEN you buy a new car, you will be offered Gap lnsurance by the dealer-but what is Gap lnsurance, are you getting it at a competitive price and do you HAVE to buy it from the dealer?
There are a number of different types of Gap lnsurance and it is important you choose the product that suits your needs. However the basic purpose of any of these policies is the same.
TOR
ENTS
You purchased a car worth £10,000, with a Gap lnsurance policy in place. Two years later the car is worth £4000 and an accident writes the car off. Your car insurance policy pays out the value of the car, in this example £4000, assuming you have comprehensive cover and the Gap policy pays out £6000, the difference. This is particularly important where the car is on finance with an outstanding balance higher than the car’s value.
The car dealer will of course wish to sell you a Gap policy, but these are often at a very high premium. You are free to buy your Gap lnsurance policy from anywhere. At Dennis Walker lnsurances we can offer Gap lnsurance from as little as £85 for a three year policy. Please contact us for a quotation for your new car. Terms and conditions apply. Pensions Reform – what it means in simple terms! Normally at this time of year, thoughts turn to the imminent tax year end, and consideration given to using any remaining ISA allowances for the current tax year (£15,000 maximum per person) and planning for the next (£15,240 maximum per person.)
However, this year, these thoughts are being overwhelmed by the imminent massive reforms to pensions, dubbed “Pension Freedom” Announced by the Chancellor, George Osborne last year, ‘Pension Freedom’ changes will give people greater power over how they spend, save or invest their retirement pots from 6th April onwards. Key reforms include 1) giving people access to their entire pension pot from age 55 onwards, 2) removing the need to buy an annuity to provide income until you die, 3) giving access to invest-and-drawdown schemes previously restricted to wealthier savers, 4) axing of a 55 per cent ‘death tax’ on pots left invested. Also, savers won’t be limited to one chance to take a single tax-free lump sum worth 25% of their pension pots, with the rest taxed as income afterwards. Instead, the Chancellor announced that people will be able to dip in, and make as many withdrawals as they want, each time getting 25% tax-free and the rest taxed like income. The changes apply to people with ‘defined contribution’ or ‘money purchase’ pension schemes, which can take contributions from both employer and employee, solely from the self-employed, or solely from an employed person who has set up such a scheme in addition to their works pensions. The schemes operate by investing the contributions, to provide a pot of money at retirement The reforms DO NOT apply to those with more generous, gold-plated ‘final salary’ pensions which provide a guaranteed income after retirement. But some experts are very nervous about what people might do with their new freedoms. The main worries are that retirees will burn through their savings and run out of money before they die, and that they risk making investing blunders that will deplete funds put aside for old age. A recent poll by a major pension provider revealed that thousands of retirees are planning to treat themselves to holidays, new cars and home improvements when the rules on accessing pension pots are relaxed. Other research suggests many will use the money to pay off debts like their mortgage, or help cashstrapped children and grandchildren. The traditional approach is to use the lump sum built up in the scheme, to buy an “Annuity”. This means the lump sum in the pot is actually exchanged for a guaranteed income for life. It is a purchase, and the lump sum is “spent” forever, and non-returnable. Drawdown, is where the lump sum is either removed in full, or in the case of income drawdown, the lump sum remains invested in the pension, and a regular “withdrawal” is taken. In the latter case, the lump sum is not exchanged for a guaranteed income. So what are the advantages and disadvantages? Firstly let us look at the traditional approach, the Annuity. A positive is that an annuity will give a guaranteed income for the rest of the life of the person who has bought the annuity. Certain “Paid for” options can be built in. An “inflation proofing” option could be taken, which
would mean the income increases each year, normally in line with an inflation index, or at a set rate. The income will invariably start at a lower level. Another option, could be to build in an option for a pension for a spouse or civil partner, so on the death of the pension holder, a set amount of income continues to be paid to the spouse/civil partner until they die. This again may reduce slightly, the amount of pension paid initially. Annuities can also be “enhanced” if an applicant has poor health, and a lower life expectancy. However, there are three major downsides. Annuities are based on interest rates, and these continue to be stubbornly low, with low rates of payments therefore, on annuities. Secondly, the “Annuity” company will mathematically decide how much of an income your pot will buy. You have no say in how much it will be! Thirdly, if the purchaser dies early into the annuity, then as the money has been “spent” , it is lost forever and no inheritance would pass to family. That is, unless a “guarantee” has been built in for a period of 5 or 10 years, and death occurs in this timescale. But this option, would again reduce the initial pension. So what about “Lump Sum” drawdown as an alternative? The comments above elude to people drawing out ALL of their pension pot, after taking the 25% tax free amount, as a lump sum. There needs to be some major words of caution here! The residual lump sum will be added to any other income, and taxed at the highest rate applicable. This could mean someone who ordinarily pays tax at 20% or does not pay tax at all, with a medium to large pot, could end up paying tax at 40%, or even 45% on the lump sum. So £100,000, suddenly could become £60,000!! Furthermore, that person would have to consider what other means they have to fund normal day to day living expenses, after the fund has been spent or used! And considering that the state pension is being repeatedly pushed back in terms of when you can get it, this is an issue that is unlikely to go away. In fact, the government incentive to introduce “workplace” pension schemes as a compulsory measure for all employers and employees, may even signal greater intent to push retirement planning on to the individual, relieving state provisions! And finally, “Income” drawdown? A recent survey by Old Mutual Wealth, indicated that the average retirement age in the U.K. is 63.6 years of age. The average life expectancy beyond this is 21 years and the average pension income is £13,118.80. At current annuity rates (for a non-impaired life), a typical pot of £237,000 would be needed to provide this annuity income for life over this 21 years, and there would be no inheritance. Old Mutual went on to calculate that by taking an income drawdown of £13,118, over 21 years, the remaining fund value could be £154,000 on death. Alternatively, the same £13,118 may only need a pot of £178,000 to create the same income, but the pot would be exhausted by 21 years. Finally, if a pot of £237,000 was used and totally exhausted after 21 years, the income could be £17,500, not £13,118! So, after taking the tax free lump sum of 25%, the remaining 75% of the pot could be “dripped” out as a form of regular withdrawal. This would be taxable, but if planned well, it could keep an individual within
their current tax band. And therein lies one of the major advantages. YOU can control how much is paid out, and when, enabling you to have a “suitable” level of income, and potentially keeping Income tax under control. The income could also be varied from time to time to reflect lifestyle. Another advantage is that if a plan holder dies prematurely, then whatever is left in the pot, will be passed on as part of that persons’ estate. So there could be a legacy to a spouse or civil partner, which they could use to boost their retirement provisions, or indeed an inheritance to children and wider family. The residual pot could be used to buy an annuity at a later date. So if a plan holder wanted to take some benefits from their pension now, but not be forced to take all of it, as would be the case with an annuity, then this is possible. So, as is the case with a number of people, they feel they can continue to work to a later age, but perhaps in a reduced hour’s capacity, then they could take a smaller amount, and eventually take more later, either by increasing the drawdown or choosing to buy an annuity with what remains. And there remains one issue that could be seen to be an advantage, but could also be a disadvantage too! The pot remains invested, so in theory, if the investments perform well enough, and the returns exceed the withdrawal and costs to run the plan, the pot could actually increase. So as theoretical example, if growth was 10% in a year, a withdrawal of 5% was taken and costs of the plan were 2%, this would result in growth of 3%. But there would be a chosen level of risk involved with the investment too! So, if withdrawals and costs exceed the returns, the pot could reduce over time. So a 5% withdrawal and 2% costs, with only 4% return, would see the pot decline by 3% in that year. And if the investments had a negative return in any year, this could create a bigger reduction. For example, withdrawal of 5%, costs of 2% and reduction in asset value of 5% could mean a 12% reduction in that year, and this may be a difficult position to recover from. So, in conclusion, there are some significant, and very welcome changes about to occur with pensions, giving people more choice and flexibility of how they use their retirement pots. However, the new options may not be best for everyone, and indeed, it may be best to use the traditional “annuity” approach, or indeed a combination of annuity and drawdown in certain cases. The main thing is to take advice from a professional Financial Adviser when considering what to do. Many people will understandably want to know all the ins and outs before taking big decisions about money meant to last the rest of their lives, or be passed on to children if there is any left. Chancellor George Osborne therefore promised that people affected would be offered free money guidance on the changes. However, it’s important to be aware in advance that such “advice” will offer general guidance only, not personalised advice. For detailed, individual help you will need to speak with a qualified financial adviser. Gardening
The Coleshill Post
Ready, steady... Spring is just on the horizon Probably the busiest season in the gardener’s calendar but the weather still can’t be trusted. There’s a real danger of being too premature and/or enthusiastic and getting caught out by a severe frost. I can’t wait to get into the garden and be ‘creative’ but it’s still cold and there are plenty of routine jobs that need doing even if they’re some of the less glamorous and satisfying ones. I’m still tidying my beds, cutting back the dead stalks of those perennials I didn’t reach last autumn or left deliberately for birds to eat the seeds. It’s time to remove last year’s growth from ferns so that the new fronds can begin to unfurl and there’s still time to complete winter pruning of
LCH
climbing and rambling roses and buddleja. There’s still time to plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs and hedging as well as fruit bushes to get them off to a good start once things begin to get warmer. In the greenhouse I’m going to begin planting broad beans, peppers and chillies. Then there’s the job – essential but boring – that I always have to force myself to do! I’m talking about cleaning all the garden tools and getting the mower serviced and its blades sharpened ready for action. I’ve already taken the submersible pump out of the pond ready to give it a good clean – I just need to summon up some motivation for that. The thought of the sound of trickling water in the summer should provide the incentive!

SERIES CONTINUED: The Coleshill and District Civic Society HERITAGE
PART THREE
The oldest house in Coleshill
IN 1971 yet another threat appeared. The MRDC served a Demolition Order on 37 High St. dating back to the 15th century.
This house was long thought to be the oldest house in Coleshill. A powerful case was presented, gathering expert opinions from as far afield as London, Sheffield and Wales. There was great Press support and MRDC withdrew the Order.
Successes & Failures MORE SUCCESS
In 1972 the owner applied to demolish Pound Cottage at the South end of Coleshill. This is our only thatched cottage and dates back to the 17th century. Strong objections were made and it was not demolished.
The Old Grammar School In 1978 the old Grammar School was in private hands, empty and dilapidated.
It became quite obvious that the owner was leaving it to be vandalised. Despite it being a historic listed building we could not get the Planning Authority, which by this time was the North Warwickshire Borough Council (NWBC), to take action against the owner. Eventually the Society enlisted the help of the CPRE, the Georgian Society, the Press, our local councillors and our M.P, but it still took 10 years before it was saved. It is now a collection of offices but is well maintained and looks good with the original Grammar School frontage remaining.
The fight to save the Cameo Cottages
IN June, 1972 an Order was granted by the Meriden Rural District Council to demolish 152, 154 and 156 High St. This was a group of cottages alongside the Coach Hotel, together with the derelict Blackmore’s Garage. Coniston House number 152 was dated 1780-1820. Number 154 a half-timbered cottage was dated 156090, and number 156 built in a similar style but not half-timbered was dated about1750. The news that they were to be demolished did not reach the public domain until early 1973. The Civic Society responded in March 1973 by requesting that the group of cottages be listed Grade 2. This was a shrewd move, for it meant that, if granted, a fresh application would have to be made for demolition. The Secretary of State did, in fact, list them and in May a fresh application was made. The Civic Society
was joined by the Council for Preservation of Rural England, the Ancient Monuments Society and the Society for Preservation of Ancient Buildings. Strong representations were made to the Warwickshire County Council all to no avail and in May 1973 the Council gave the order to demolish. Mrs Wall writes “the County Council, before its retirement to comparative obscurity, has decided to cast out the retention of 152, 154 and156 High St.” The Society decided to appeal to the Secretary of State. Mrs Wall headed her letter ‘THE VOICE OF HE THAT CRIETH IN THE WILDERNESS’. In November 1973 the Minister called in the application for Public Inquiry. The Inquiry was held in October 1974. The other Societies were represented by their own architect and Lyndon Cave, RIBA, of the Council for Preservation of Rural England (CPRE) represented the Society. Rather
astonishingly, the County Council’s own architect gave evidence also advocating retention of the cottages. Obviously the newly elected Council were of a different mind to that of their predecessors. Doris Wall wrote “it now transpires that (the property developers) are a two-man company with a capital of £100. One has a somewhat peculiar history and the other is an unknown quantity in the business world. There have been two small fires in the buildings recently ………but these have ceased after a little interference by the police.” The Inspector recommended refusal of the demolition and the Secretary of State concurred. Efforts were subsequently made by the Society to obtain one of these cottages as a Museum but it came to nothing. 154 and 156 were renovated and are now part of the Coleshill Hotel complex.
Civic Societies first Publication 1984 was notable for the publication of the Society's first book – “ Old Coleshill “ - a compilation of photographs by Eric Miller.
1000 copies were sold in the first month and 1800 in six months. It is now out of print. The following year the Society held their first photographic competition and published the best twelve photos as a Birthday Calendar. This is now also out of print.
DR DORIS WALL IN 1981 Dr Doris Wall (left) retired after seventeen turbulent years as secretary. She had devoted an enormous amount of time, enthusiasm and energy to her task, and was never afraid to speak her mind. The NWBC allowed the Society to put a plaque in her memory on
Old Bank House, the first listed building the Society had saved. A new committee took over and in 1984 these comprised many notable people, clockwise from the top left, Miss M Maxwell, Mrs E Noble, Mr B Teall, Mrs E Mortiboys, Mr E Miller, Miss M Hughes, Miss J Tuckley, Mr N Hastelow, Miss J Griffiths, Dr J Stuart

The Sam Rogers Interview IT's been over twelve months since I last caught up with The Samuel Rogers Band. At the time they had only just formed as a three piece and were about to embark on a journey that has taken them all over the UK.
On the eve of their first homecoming gig at Chubby's in Coleshill on 28th March I ask front man Sam and manager Pete, who just happens to be Sam's Dad, about the past year and find out what we can expect from their new album. EDITOR: Sam it's been over twelve months since your last interview with the Post, tell me what you've been up to? SAM: “It's been a busy time for us, playing loads of gigs around Birmingham, sometimes two a week. We've been to Liverpool and London, building up our fan base which has grown quite a bit over the past year or so. We've done quite a few radio sessions which won us the track of the week accolade on a Swedish radio station. We've been writing loads of new material for the new album as well whilst fitting in rehearsals religuosly every week at the Green Man. 2014 was a very productive year for us. Early 2015 has been a bit quiet
but that's always the way this time of year but it did give us chance to work on the new album which is nice.” EDITOR: “New album? Tell me more!” SAM: “It's called Piece of the Action. Produced by Dan Mcormack who happens to be Roy Wood's director of music and has work with legends like Van Morrison, he's got proper credentials. The studio is on his farm in Netherseal called Eastfields Farm, out in the middle of nowhere. We wanted something different from the EP that we recorded last year, which was done and dusted in a day. Andy Bennett from Ocean Colour Scene recommended Dan so we went to have a look. He led us to an old barn with a single light bulb hanging down and straight away we knew this was the place. EDITOR: “What was it like working with a producer, did he have much input on your sound?” SAM: “Yeh it was really good, we laid some tracks down like we normally do and Dan just suggested a few tweaks here and there. It worked really well, he even plays the keys on a few tracks which is
great. It's still the SRB sound but Dan's suggestions have managed to improve on that a bit.” EDITOR: “How many tracks are on the album? SAM: “We decided on ten tracks with a little interlude thrown in, Piece of the Action is the title track.” EDITOR: “Love is by my side was probably my favourite track from the EP. Can we expect the same catchy, infectious sound from the album or have you moved on from that?” SAM: “There aren't really many 'souly' kind of sounds on there. There's a good mix of Oasis style rocky tunes with a bit of a psychedelic sound going on half way through and some more kicking tunes to finish it off. It's good album to be fair, I can't wait to get it out there for people to listen to.” EDITOR: “What have you been listening to whilst writing the album? SAM: “Quite a bit of Damon Albarn actually and loads of ELO. I watched the BBC4 documentary on
Jeff Lynne called Mr Blue Sky. I saw his house and thought I wanna live there. So from that I started listening to his stuff and it's just amazing. Been listening to Ocean Colour Scene as well so there's a bit of influence from everybody in there really.” EDITOR: “Do you think that there are any real stand out tracks on the album?. SAM: “I see them all as my little babies, I love them all the same.” PETE: “Well the stand out tracks for me have got to be Magic Garden and Fortune Teller has got it all Wrong. They've got everything. EDITOR: “So what does the future hold for the SRB?” SAM: “We’re just going to keep writing and keep playing live as much as we can and see where that takes us. Watch this space!” You can catch The Samuel Rogers Band live at Chubby’s on 28th March. There will be over 100 photographs of the village and villagers in times past, many of which have not been exhibited before. Scores of faces need naming
as do some of the locations. Central to the exhibition will be enlarged articles from the ‘Coleshill Chronicle’, some dating back to the 19th century. These make fascinating reading and are unique social snippets that illustrate just how much our area has changed. Progress? I wonder? Admission to the exhibition will be £1 and will include light refreshments. Colin Green

Business46 held their held their monthly breakfast networking event at the recently re-launched Norton in Coleshill on Wed 11th February. The venue, the speaker and the lovely catering were highly praised by the 30 plus local businesses in attendance. The topic for the morning event was ‘Selecting and Motivating Sales Teams’. Highly acclaimed speaker Lorna D Sheldon explained how traditional rules no longer apply as attitude and aptitude are now the key attributes to look for. Lorna is one of Britain’s most dynamic trainers in personal communication and presentation skills, and an inspiring speaker with 22 years of training excellence. The presentation was well received and proved inspiring to a number of local employers who often struggle attracting and retaining key sales people. The morning was highly productive and the organisers were pleased to see so many new attendees. 2015 is proving to be a highly exciting year for Business46 organisers Anna Plotnek of AP Designs, Penny Sheward of MCD Recruitment and Jemma James of TruTac. Having recently launched a membership scheme, they already have a number of subscribers who are keen to take advantage of the various member benefits. Due to the great success of Business46 there is also now a Business90 which covers the B90 post-
code areas of Solihull and Shirley, with more groups expected to be launched before the end of the year. Penny said “The format has been so successful we were approached to take it into other areas and it’s worked. We know businesses outside the B46 postcode could benefit from our unique networking style.” Anna commented “The launch of our membership packages has allowed us to give specific support to those who need it and we are enjoying seeing businesses grow as a result.” Jemma added “2015 is an exciting time for us and our members. All our hard work is paying off and we can see tangible results in the local business community.” In March the team are having a change to their normal format, holding it on Thurs 5th at 6pm in the evening. The event is being hosted by Commbus at their amazing Deckerdence Venue, just outside of Coleshill. The event includes a wine tasting session by Shawbury Vintners which is strictly limited in numbers, so if any local businesses want to attend, early booking is advised and spaces will be prioritised for members. Please email the team to book info@business46.co.uk. The Business46 team welcomes feedback and suggestions for venues, topics and speakers, get in touch by emailing info@business46.co.uk, call 01675 434583, tweet @business_46 or alternatively find information on www.business46.co.uk.

HEALTH & WELLBEING
A new study out today reveals that stress levels in Birmingham are on the increase and are the second highest in the UK, slightly higher even than London. We are risking our health by turning to sugary food, takeaways and alcohol to help cope with modern life. The study by the British Acupuncture Council to mark ‘Acupuncture Awareness Week’ (2nd-8th March 2015) shows that 57.64% of Birmingham people are more stressed now than ten years ago and are turning to junk food and alcohol in a bid to make themselves feel better1. The study of 5,000 adults found that although 62.5% say they are aware prolonged periods of stress can have a long term impact on their health, almost half of people admit they just put up with it and two thirds say stress is unavoidable in their life. A lack of time
(43%), wanting to have it all (31%), not enough ‘me’ time (29%) and difficulty switching off from work (26.5%) were cited as the top reasons for the rise of stress. Chris Leeson, a qualified member of the British Acupuncture Council for nineteen years comments: “Traditional acupuncture is an effective, evidence based therapy that can be a positive step for anyone wanting to get their stress levels back under control.” With 2.3 million acupuncture treatments carried out each year, traditional acupuncture is one of the most popular complementary therapies practised in the UK today. Based on ancient principles which go back nearly two thousand years, traditional acupuncture involves placing extremely fine, sterile needles at specific points on the body to trigger a healing response and restoring balance. Chris continues: “Although the research shows 1 in 10 of us think stress
isn’t serious enough to seek help, it’s common to feel exhausted, overwhelmed and even depressed. Life does not have to be this way and help is available. A course of traditional acupuncture helps to target the root cause of the problem as treatment is unique for each individual. Many of my patients find traditional acupuncture to be wonderfully relaxing and restorative; they like the fact that I take time to really listen to them and say they wish they had tried treatment sooner. When looking for a practitioner, make sure you find a qualified acupuncturist registered with the British Acupuncture Council to ensure a high standard of care and safety.” To find out more about traditional acupuncture visit www.introducingacupuncture.co.uk. Chris Leeson is a fully qualified traditional acupuncturist available at 34 Penns Lane, Coleshill www.yinyangcentre.co.uk 01675 464369

Sir One expects politicians to try and score points off each other when it comes to a general election. However the latest, bald claim by Craig Tracey in a campaign leaflet that the George Eliot hospital was responsible for 1000 “excessive” deaths is just plain silly. Clearly he hasn’t read the conclusions or understood the statistics behind the Keogh and other reports. Is it too much to hope that over the next 10 weeks, we won’t be subject to a further flurry of ridiculous statements? I doubt it! Mr Gavin Gordon MBBS. LRCS. FRCS. FFAEM [Former A and E Consultant and Clinical Director George Eliot Hospital]
Your views count so usethenews and be heard!!
Letters to the editor... Would it be too much to ask those drivers who park on pavements to be more considerate towards people like myself who have to use a mobility scooter. Blythe road is an example, I have to go across that dangerous junction because there are a number of cars permanently parked just after the furniture shop on the pavement preventing me from going the safer way. It gets no better when I get to the shops, the cafe,s have stands promoting themselves outside with a lorry also on the pavement, a gentleman kindly moved the stand so I could pass and remarked how inconsiderate people were.
IN LOVING MEMORY
Christopher Joseph Moran My family and I would like to thank everyone who showed their support in all kinds of various ways on the death of my dear husband Christopher. Your generosity of £800 given in his memory was donated to the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit. Thank you so much
I then paid a visit to what I thought must be the police station as there was quite a few police cars parked outside, but I couldn’t get in but there were two police sitting in a car waiting to get in, they spoke to me saying they were from Leicester but could they help me, he wrote down my concerns and said he would pass it on to our local police, I am still waiting for answers. I was under the impression that it was illegal to park on the pavement, but then it would need policemen to enforce this, where are they in Coleshill. Margaret Warman Servite House Coleshill

What is RGN?
THE Warwickshire Rural Growth Network provides free business support to businesses and individuals looking to start their own business, in rural Warwickshire.
Warwickshire County Council has been selected by DEFRA, as one of five counties in England to run this new pilot business support programme focusing on rural areas. You will be given a dedicated business coach, who will work with you to develop a bespoke action plan, to launch a new business or kick start business growth. You and your business coach will work through your journey, to achieve your goals. To discuss this opportunity further, please do contact us on either 07768 390148 or 07920 563781.
Wagtails is a new start business established in December 2014 and offers qualified and professional dog grooming and micro-chipping services across the local area. Kim Lawlor, owner of Wagtails met with Rita Booth, business coach of Pera Consulting (UK) Ltd, partner of Warwickshire Rural Growth Network, in June 2014. At that time, Kim had been made redundant and wanted to explore opportunities to set-up her own business and create a professional life that offered her a work life balance. By the time, Rita and Kim met Kim had already identified an opportunity in the local market place and had already begun formal training to become a qualified dog groomer. Wagtails is currently, receiving bespoke business support, through a blend of one-to-one coaching and business workshop sessions. The business coaching has provided Kim with confidence in her business concept, as well as developing business acumen and
marketing strategies. The business workshops, funded through Warwickshire Rural Growth Network have provided Kim with an opportunity to develop her understanding of business management knowledge, such as Finding & Winning Customers and Business Finance, the Essentials. Additionally, these workshops have offered Kim an opportunity to meet with like-minded entrepreneurs from her local area and have therefore, provided an opportunity to build long-term relationships with potential clients and peers alike. Kim and Rita discussed the business concept, developed the services offered and explored potential ways in which Kim may promote her activities across the local community. It was clear that this business needed a flexible approach, by offering both a fully equipped dog salon, as well as a mobile service, where Kim takes her services to the dog’s home. Following an initial review of the business concept, Kim and Rita have worked together to successfully establish Wagtails. This journey included developing a cash flow forecast to plan the business idea, establishing resources including setting up a dog salon and various elements of marketing activity to raise awareness. The one-to-one coaching sessions pro-
vide Kim with an opportunity to discuss her ideas and develop next steps in making this business a reality and generating growth. With the professional support and guidance from business coach, Rita Booth, Wagtails successfully launched in December 2014, with a fully functional dog salon and qualified practitioner. As well as becoming a qualified dog groomer and micro-chipper, Kim is beginning to develop strong links across the local community. She is currently developing a dedicated website and social media accounts, such as Facebook. There is still much to do, as with any startup and the business is now on its way. Please do contact Warwickshire Rural Growth Network to see how we may help you by either contacting Rita Booth on 07768 390148 or by visiting www. warwickshiregov.uk/ruralgrowthnetwork . “Without the help of Rita Booth (Warwickshire Rural Growth Network ) I wouldn’t have had the confidence to live my dream and open Wagtails. Rita is only a phone call away to answer an problems that may occur which is so reassuring I highly recommend WRGN to anyone thinking of starting their own business” Kim Lawlor, Owner of Wagtails, 07807 091201

FRANKIE Gavin will challenge Chris van Heerden for the IBF International Welterweight title clash on May 9 at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, live on Sky Sports.
Gavin will headline in the second city in Matchroom Sport’s first major show there for 13 years and his first fight in the city since September 2010, and his meeting with the South African visitor will follow an appearance on the undercard of IBF World ruler Kell Brook’s first title defence in Sheffield on March 28 as the Birmingham star chases a future showdown with ‘The Special One’. Van Heerden has beaten British opposition before having defeated Matthew Hatton in March 2013 in his then-hometown of Johannesburg, defending his IBO World title for the second time in the process. The 27 year old now fights out of California and picked up the belt he defends against ‘Funtime’ in Birmingham in January , knowing a victory on foreign soil would see him burst into World title contention in the lucrative 147lb division. “It’s a massive fight for me and a huge one for my first big night in Birmingham,” said Gavin. “Fighting in Birmingham means so much to me and now I am going to do so in a massive fight as the headliner of a great bill. It’s time to get my profile up, get happy, get winning, looking good again and getting on the path to a World title.” World rated Middleweight Matthew Macklin boxes in Birmingham for the first time in almost five years as he looks to bounce back from defeat to Jorge Sebastian Heiland, unbeaten Super Flyweight sensation Kal Yafai will be in title action on the card and his brother Gamal will continue his rise in the pro ranks while all-action Stourbridge youngster Sam Eggington will be hoping for a major title bout on the bill should he beat Shayne Singleton in Hull on March 7. Tickets are on sale at 9am today (February 18) to Matchroom Fight Pass members priced at £40, £60 and £100 and £150 VIP from www.matchroomboxing.com Tickets go on general sale from 9am tomorrow (February 19) with tickets priced £40, £60 and £100 from www.barclaycardarena.co.uk and VIP tickets priced at £150 exclusively available from www. matchroomboxing.com

THE late Peter O’Toole once said “The only thing I’ve ever been interested in teaching anyone in life is cricket”.
For those involved in the training and coaching of cricket at Water Orton Cricket Club those words certainly resonate and the coaching staff would unanimously share the great actor’s passion not only for the game itself but in passing on the skills and techniques to future generations. The coming summer, which admittedly seems an eternity away, will see a few minor improvements in arrangements at Water Orton Cricket Club and mean staff at the club are even more eager than usual as we approach the first training evening and that first ball of the new season. Registration night this year takes place on Friday 13 March between 6.00pm and 7.00pm at the Water Orton Cricket Ground and Club, Coleshill Road, Water Orton. One of the improvements which has been made this year, in response to comments made by some parents of young players, is to consolidate cricket registration and club membership into a single membership fee. Importantly at this time when so many of us face financial constraints the club element of membership fees will be significantly discounted for immediate family members whose son, or daughter, is undertaking coaching at the club. Further discounts will also apply where more than one young person from the same immediate family is undertaking cricket training. In terms of the cricket coaching itself and with the aid of ‘Complete Cricket’ a minimum of seven level 2 coaches will be available for each training session for the forthcoming season. This is an unprecedented move to ensure that
comprehensive group and individual coaching can take place and everyone being coached gets maximum benefit from the training evenings. Training nights will begin in earnest on Friday 17th April and will run each Friday until 11th September. The evenings will be split with 4 and 5 year olds being coached between 5pm and 6pm whilst 6 to 17 year olds will be split into groups, dependent on ability, and will be coached from 6pm until 7.30pm. Membership fees in respect of 4 and 5 year olds will be £20 and as mentioned above this will include full club membership for the immediate family, as well as a training top for each player [courtesy of one of our locally based sponsors]. A nominal coaching fee of £4 will be payable per session thereafter, recognising that these youngsters may not always be willing or able to attend every session. Players in the 6-17 age group will pay a one off membership fee of £75 and players will also receive a training top, full year membership of the club for their immediate family but with no further training session charges. On Sunday 8th February 2015, the Mayor of Coleshill Mr Harry Taylor officially opened the phase 1 refurbishment of Memorial Park Sports Centre, Memorial Park, Coleshill. The works have been a collaborative partnership between Coleshill Cricket Club, SITA Trust, Coleshill Parish Trust and Coleshill Town Council. The completed works over the past year have seen a new roof for the Centre, brand new cricket changing rooms and shower facilities, new external windows and improved energy efficiency measures installed. Club Chairman Adam Harrison, explained: “This is a very proud moment for the Cricket Club. Since taking over the lease of the building from the Town Council in 2009, we have worked tirelessly to ensure our improvement plans are delivered. I personally pay thanks to the hundreds of voluntary unpaid hours to former Chairman David Whitehead and project leader David Pudge. “This refurbishment just shows that with hard work and determination, anything can be achieved. The support from the Town Council has been fantastic and this has ushered a new era of collaborative working between our two organisations. I cannot wait for the start of the cricket season, to
sit in our new home dressing room, with the wonderful new panorama which is Memorial Park.” The Mayor of Coleshill, Cllr Harry Taylor, commented: “I was very proud to open the refurbished facilities at the Memorial Park Centre. The Memorial Park is entrusted to the Town Council to promote and support leisure and sporting activities in the town and this collaboration is exactly the kind of thing we should be doing. This project is another step towards achieving Coleshill Town Council’s ambitions to improve the Memorial Park, to make it a real hub and focal point for the people of Coleshill.” The Club are not resting on their laurels and are soon to begin works on Phase 2 of the refurbishment of the Centre. These works will include refurbished sports changing and shower rooms, a new disabled toilet with disabled access improvements and changing facilities. The Club will also be investing in other external upgrades to the Centre. These works are funded from a successful grant bid by the Club to the National Lottery funded Sport England’s Inspired Facilities programme, Land Rover Community Committee Fund, Coleshill Town Council and the Club itself.
