North Warwickshire Borough Council this week released ambitious plans to bring much needed jobs, houses and investment to the Borough.

Local authorities are required to provide upto-date plans for the housing and employment needs of their areas. New rules require them to ‘significantly boost’ the supply of housing based on independent assessments of what is needed. The plans released this week will run to 2031. The Borough faces unprecedented pressure to provide housing and has decided to deal with the issue positively by planning the growth, rather than wait to be picked off by speculative developments that would place development in sensitive areas and without much needed infra-

structure. The area has had decades of very low growth the population only grew by 100 between 2001 and 2011 - and Councillors plan to use the unavoidable growth to spark investment in congested roads and other facilities that have seen very little improvement for years. The Council intends to consult widely on the plans from the Autumn after the plans are considered by Councillors at a meeting on 3rd August. The Council has already consulted on plans for 3,300 houses but now needs to find approximately 3,500 additional houses. Speaking ahead of the meeting, Leader of the Council Councillor David Humphreys said: ' We appreciate that this represents quite a change for the Borough but as with every other

area, we cannot avoid making proper provision for the houses and jobs that are needed. The crisis in the housing market is well acknowledged and we will continue to fail future generations if we don't provide a place for them to live.” “ We have, therefore, decided not to duck this issue and will use the development pressure to kick start much needed changes to our creaking roads and medical facilities. We have managed to do this whilst protecting the vast majority of our Green Belt.” For more information, see the reports for the Subcommittee at https://www.northwarks.gov.uk/meetings/ meeting/671/local_development_framework_ sub_committee

Many of you will have seen the Memorial Park is changing. The plans by Coleshill Town Council to make the park a first class facility are now being delivered on. The Council’s appointed contractor has been working on the site for a number of weeks now and the results are already looking impressive. The new tennis courts are nearly complete and once marked out in a few weeks’ time, will open to the public. This will provide residents of Coleshill with a fantastic sports facility to enjoy with family and friends.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll see further improvements and new additions to our park as we seek to make it a place locals and those further afield want to spend time to engage in sports and recreation. The new junior play area is already taking shape and new equipment will be installed on site in the next couple of weeks. This has been made possible by relocating the tennis courts and closing off the pedestrian access to Park Avenue. Later in the summer the new adventure playground and outdoor gym will be installed by the skate park and the new surfacing

After 180 years of trading, HSBC is closing its Coleshill branch on 23 September. Atherstone branch closes the same day.

Barclays in Coleshill closes the following week after 51 years in town. Both give increased use of other branches or online and telephone banking as a reason for closure. HSBC has seen an overall reduction of footfall at their branches of more than 40%. At Barclays, customer usage has declined and 33 per cent of customers on average now regularly use alternative branches. A framed early history of the HSBC bank in the market hall shows that Coleshill branch opened in June 3, 1836 as a branch of the Coventry Union bank. The branch made a valuable contribution to the growth of Coventry Union’s business, particularly in its link with local agriculture. The bank was also licensed for the issue of its own series of bank notes. Lloyds Bank is staying on for the time being. It opened an agency in Coleshill in June 1865 in the premises of Thomas Brierley, a linen draper, in the High Street, who acted as agent until 1903. On 29 September 1875 the branch moved to new premises at 121 High Street previously owned by Barker and Lafarelle, surgeons, now Queen Anne House. In 1878 the premises were rebuilt on the same site. On 1 January 1903 Coleshill became a full bank branch. The branch had a strong connection with the local farming industry. Until 1933 it had rings outside so that customers could tether their horses when they visited the branch.

Blooming little Helpers

This July a great time was had by children from Year Two, High Meadow Infant School, who joined Peter Fowler, Chair of Coleshill in Bloom, to plant flowers in the two planters along Station Road.

The children said they had a lovely and fun-filled time planting the flowers and supporting Coleshill in Bloom to help to make Coleshill bloom in the sunshine! Peter Fowler added “It was great to help and watch the children plant the flowers in Station Road this year and I am really looking forward to the them participating again next Summer”.

prominent local family history

The Coleshill Post

Happenstance reveals by Mike Walpole and Chris Weaving

Mention of Coleshill surgeons Barker and Lafarelle in the bank closure story and the chance discovery of a journal kept by two Day brothers from Water Orton reveals the role three prominent families played in the life of this part of 19th century north Warwickshire.

Generations of the Barkers are membered in St Peter and St Paul’s parish church in Coleshill in a window dedicated to their life as surgeons and apothecaries in the town. It faces east in the lady chapel, keeping watch over the family vault just outside. Appropriately, it tells the story of the Good Samaritan. The investment of £1.50 in the battered journal in a Reading charity shop has put the Day and Lafarelle families into the spotlight, too. The journal, a handwritten account of part of the lives of William Shirley Day and a younger brother Edward Norman, was bought because it told of adventures at sea, not as an important reference to scions of a philanthropical Water Orton family. It had already been nearly half way round the world before William used it. Edward had used it to keep a record of his journey as an apprentice on the Royal Alfred taking salt from Cheshire to Calcutta in 1880. Closer examination in the six years since its discovery shows how boyhood friends James Lafarelle, a son of the surgeon mentioned in the main story, and William Shirley Day, met again in America a few months after James had emigrated to Texas in 1881. William joined him a few months later after sailing from England on 1 October in the hope the warmth of Texas would cure his tuberculosis. He returned within a year, moved to Bournemouth, where he died. He recorded every detail of his trip in the journal. His copper-plate writing told of the violent three week crossing of the Atlantic and the

long traverse of America on the newly-laid railroads until, at last, the prairies invited him to the Texas Hills. For a few months, he lived the outdoor life prescribed for consumptives with a sheep and goat farmer. The journal tells of the day James and William met at Uvalde after a rail trip “in, or rather on, a luggage construction train for a 22 mile ride on a load of timber, under the hot sun.” The shout of “Uvalde, ahead!” came as a total shock and he quickly jerked into action. He methodically replaced his jacket, dusted off his shoes and straightened his cravat, as the ‘small village’ of Uvalde appeared on the horizon. There, the journal says opposite the road to ‘town’, was his pal, Jim, sitting atop a two-horse wagon “looking out for him.” In unison, they raised their arms and their hats, and smiled as the train reached a standstill at the pile of sleepers. They drove into town and stocked up on some necessaries from Louis Schwartz’ store, bought a copy of the ‘Hesperian’ newspaper, cooked a good supper and spent the night in the wagon. William returned home after seven months away, married, saw the arrival of a new son Shirley Cuthbert and died 11 days later. He moved to Bournemouth to try to cure the TB. He is is buried in Wimborne Road Cemetery in Bournemouth with his seven year old son William Bernard who died of TB three years after his father. James stayed on in Texas, eventually became a mercury miner and lived out his life in the far west Texas town of Alpine. He died in 1919. His gravestone contains a permanent reminder that he came from Coleshill. Captain Shirley Cuthbert Day, MC, of the 10th Battalion,Sherwood Foresters, died on 12 October 1917 and is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. His grandfather’s grave is now under the Robert Lloyd Room at Water Orton parish church, built upon in 2000 with the permission of relatives. When William senior died in 1915, he was wealthy with a large property, Heathfields, in Water Orton. He was directly involved in the building of the new church and the building of the new school. He helped initiate a new cricket team, in which to take on the formidable Coleshill squad. He sponsored the football team, taught at the school and Sunday school, was churchwarden, member of the choir, victualler at the Swan Inn, Coleshill, estate agent, freemason and family man, (although he married three times). With his friends the Mercers, the Palmers and the Jaques, he was possibly the creator of a new, aspirational Water Orton. He personally succeeded financially yet also philanthropically giving back to the village he loved and where he remained for most of his life. His epitaph in St. Peter & Paul’s Church, Water Orton and erected by his wife Bessie E Day reads: “Whatsoever thy hand findeth to do, do it with all thy might.” The closure of the HSBC also revealed a ”forgotten” casualty of WW1, not mentioned on any local war memorial. Coventry Union Bank senior clerk Charles Lamley Burton joined up in July 1917, was posted to France in March 1918 and died from pneumonia in a French hospital in October 1918. His name is not on the Coleshill war memorial, but recorded on a memorial at a walkway near a Crossrail station in London. The memorial had previously been located in HSBC’s Leadenhall Street HQ in the City of London before it moved to Canary Wharf. Uvalde’s website describes it as a place that's as close to far away as you'll ever be. Alpine’s website describes itself as a gem, a remote, high-desert jewel nestled in the tall hills of West Texas, a friendly, bustling community of a little over 5,000 people in a scenic valley that feels like nowhere else in the state.

New Prime Minister Business leaders in Coventry and Warwickshire have called for the new Prime Minister to provide a stable platform for growth.

Theresa May takes over from David Cameron today (Wednesday, July 13) following the recent referendum vote for the UK to leave the European Union. That decision has sparked political and economic uncertainty but the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce is now hoping the appointment of May will help bring stability. Louise Bennett, chief executive of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “We had weeks of uncertainty leading up to the referendum and then the decision really did take people by surprise. It saw the pound fall and the political fall-out has brought a new ‘shock’ with every day that has passed. “Hopefully we will see a period of calm and stability now that we have a new Prime Minister in place. “We wish Theresa May every success in the post. We are not a party political organisation but it is in the interests of the whole country, including our members, that the Government can now get on and function properly. “Of course, the PM is going to need time to set out a way forward – which will include a new relationship with Europe following the decision to leave. “That’s important for business confidence but also it’s vital that we get clarity on what it will Inset:

mean for exporters into the EU. “Furthermore, those people who employ people from the EU will want to know what is going to happen to them. “All that said, it shouldn’t mean that domestic issues that are affecting businesses should be put on the backburner. “We need a strong commitment to infrastructure spending – something Theresa May has already indicated she is keen to implement. “Infrastructure was one of the topics we highlighted when we launched our Go For Growth campaign at the start of the year and that is where our focus lies for the next couple of months of the campaign. “It really is vital that the UK now, more than ever, can ensure it has truly world class infrastructure – from transport to digital – and the new Prime Minister and her team should stop at nothing to make this happen. “The issue around skills hasn’t gone away and that is, again, another reason why businesses will want some certainty around what Brexit means for workers from the EU. “Also, we need a solution to the problem that businesses are having in finding the right kind of space in which to expand – something our members continue to raise. “Ultimately, however, it is stability that business want to see and that is what we want the new Prime Minister and her team to provide in the first instance before setting about meeting all of the challenges ahead.”

The End of An Era for Coleshill Town Band

THE RISE OF ‘TECH FOR BREAKFAST’ SQUARE-EYED KIDS SENT TO PRE-SCHOOL CLUBS TO CUT DOWN ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Fifty-five per cent of British children are distracted in the mornings by ‘Snapchat’, ‘Instagram’ and ‘YouTube’

After more than twenty years of being the conductor of Coleshill Town Band, Stephen Fagg is stepping down from the role of musical director.

When appointed, Stephen was the youngest musical director in the band's long history. His twenty years of conducting the band has also made him the band's longest-serving musical director. Over the two decades, Stephen has proudly used his music degree and professional training to raise the band’s aspirations and standards- learning how to present themselves professionally and enhancing their musical ability. This was achieved through reintroducing the band to contests, designing and planning the band's successful annual 'themed concerts', helping plan and deliver yearly Proms and Christmas concerts, recording the band's first CDs as well as sourcing and undertaking many numerous special projects and opportunities. One such project was directing three consecutive performances of Handel’s 'Messiah' complete with the required four vocal soloists and a choir of 50 specifically assembled for the event. Stephen stated that, personally, this was the greatest highlight and achievement in his twenty years: "Messiah was quite an undertaking for a fourth section band, but we worked hard and rose to the challenge to deliver three memorable performances." Stephen added, "Stepping down as Musical Director of Coleshill Town Band was the hardest decision I have ever had to make, as it has been a huge part of my life for twenty years. The time has come where I need to finish while both myself and the band are happy and healthy". Stephen's association, however, with the band is not at an end as he will continue to direct the organisation’s flourishing youth set-up. Some twelve years ago, the youth band was established as a way of developing players for the senior band and providing opportunities for the community. It now successfully competes in contests and has its own popular concert schedule. The beginner band, conducted by Sally Fagg, were formed due to the unforeseen success of the youth band and are now forging their own reputation too- having performed at Symphony Hall in the National Festival of Music for Youth."By continuing to lead and develop the youth set-up, I am continuing to ensure the future of the senior band by developing players to follow the many young people who have already progressed to the senior band". Stephen concluded that he looks forward to helping to recruit a new musical director for the Coleshill Town Band who can continue to provide the seniors with new opportunities, challenges to help them progress and programmes to entertain their loyal audiences. Stephen added that he is proud to have worked with so many dedicated musicians throughout his twenty years leading the band.

Nearly one in five British working parents believe the main benefit of school breakfast clubs is the reduction in time their children spent on social media Fighting the tech, working parents believe their children benefit from spending more time socialising with their friends in the school day Tech-frazzled working families are seeking school breakfast clubs in a bid to get their children off social media sites in mornings. Shocking new research has revealed a quarter of British children are taking to Snapchat or Instagram rather than tucking into their breakfast – with 30 per cent becoming increasingly distracted by YouTube before school. The report, by Kellogg’s, revealed tech and social media were the main obstacle stopping children from having something to eat before school, with half of those surveyed admitting their kids spent more time watching television than enjoying a good breakfast. Desperate to restore some human interaction for their children, nearly one in five (18 per cent) of parents said the main benefit of the school Breakfast Clubs was the reduction in time their children spent on social media and tech in the mornings. The Kellogg’s study, ‘The Parent’s Lifeline’, which looks into the role school breakfast clubs play in the lives of working families, showed 47 percent of parents believe their children benefited from spending extra time socialising with their classmates. Lifting the lid on the stressful home lives of Britain’s parents, the study showed how the fast-paced modern dynamic leaves more than half failing to provide their children with a week day breakfast. Struggling to multi-task and seeking a ‘quiet’ life, Dads were more likely to hand the kids’ tech in the mornings than mums. Left with dad, kids were 10 per cent more likely to sit on YouTube, nine per cent more inclined to watch television and, disregarding their breakfast, spent more time uploading to social media (six per cent). However, keen for their children to make friends in person, nearly a quarter of dads (23 per cent) argued it was important they sent their children to breakfast clubs, in a bid to get them to socialise with children of different age groups. But sadly it is Britain’s highest earners that are the most responsible for the rise in ‘tech for breakfast’ trend. Interestingly 54 per cent those earning £70,000 to £100,000 failed to clamp down on social media in the mornings, in comparison to an average of around 18 per cent in lower income brackets. Parent working in busy, affluent roles, such as top level civil servants or qualified professionals, were also the most likely culprits to handover the tech to the kids. More than two thirds admitted to giving out iPads or mobile phones in

a bid to get ready for work quicker. And it is unsurprising children seek tech over food in the mornings when mum and dad fail to practise what they preach, with 14 per cent of top tier workers responding to emails or checking their own Facebook (8 per cent) ahead of breakfast. Interestingly, working parents on lower incomes appeared to be more aware of the impact of tech on their children’s lives. Parents, earning £0 to £15,000 were nearly five per cent more likely to send their kids to breakfast clubs to get them off social media than those earning the biggest bucks. YouTube remained a problem throughout with both manual and professional workers turning to the online network to keep the peace and ensure the busy morning rush runs smoothly. Julia Waltham, Head of Policy & Campaigns at Working Families - the UK's leading work-life balance charity, argues breakfast clubs are not just about make sure children get breakfast in the morning - but providing busy working parents with much needed childcare support. She said: “Breakfast clubs are not just about cereal and toast in the mornings – they can be an important element supporting many working families in their efforts to combine work and family life when their children start school. “Working parents are often under pressure to juggle work and family life without letting one impact on the other. “As we can see from today’s report, breakfast clubs can be a factor in relieving some of that pressure and resulting stress, helping working parents to get to work earlier and allowing them more time in the evening to spend with their children. “It’s vital that parents are able to achieve the work-life fit that works for their family – breakfast clubs can be a convenient, affordable option helping working parents do that.” Interestingly, in the capital, breakfast clubs played the greatest role in children’s socialisation, with 58 per cent of working London parents seeing the benefit of their children spending more time with their friends. Kellogg’s has been supporting breakfast clubs in schools for 18 years providing funding, cereal donations and training to a network of 2,500 Breakfast Clubs across the UK. Paul Wheeler, Director of Corporate Affairs for Kellogg’s, said: “‘The Parent’s Lifeline’ report highlights the daily stress and anxiety working parents face, from juggling the busy family breakfast to getting themselves ready and work focused. “With the rise of technology and social media in the home, it is very difficult for parents to encourage their children to ‘switch off’ and simply eat breakfast – especially when they are up against the clock during the morning rush. “School breakfast clubs provide families with the ability to help restore calm into the morning routine, as well as providing a place for young people to socialise and interact without using an iPad or a mobile phone.” Commenting on the impact on parents, he added: “The benefit for parents who take advantage of breakfast clubs are, on the whole, more likely to feel happier, with 59 per cent seeing a boost in wellbeing.”

The run-up to the EU referendum was a slight drag on business confidence in Coventry and Warwickshire – but the effect of Brexit and the political fall-out is still not clear.

The Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce carried out its second quarterly economic survey of 2016 ahead of the referendum and the results have just emerged. While more than half of businesses in both manufacturing and services still expected turnover to rise in the coming 12 months, it was down on the previous quarter. In the service sector, 54 per cent of companies expected turnover to go up, 41.4 per cent thought it would remain the same while only 4.6 per cent felt it would decrease.

In manufacturing, 50.6 per cent of firms were anticipating a rise in turnover, 39.5 per cent said it would stay the same and 10 per cent believe it will drop. The overall figure for the previous quarter saw 73 per cent of firms forecast a rise in turnover. On the employment front, 25.9 per cent of businesses in service sector were expecting to increase headcount, 72.8 per cent thought it would stay the same and 1.2 per cent said it would fall. In manufacturing, 27.5 per cent predicted taking on more people, 68.8 per cent said it would remain constant and 3.8 per cent were expecting to reduce the number of staff. Louise Bennett, chief executive of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said the buildup to the referendum had caused uncertainty. She said: “We heard from members in the weeks leading up to the referendum that decisions were being put on hold until the vote had taken place and I believe that can explain the fall in the number of businesses expecting turnover and headcount to rise. “Equally, there wasn’t too much alarm – with only a very small number of firms expecting to have to cut headcount. “What we don’t know, yet, is the effect Brexit has had on confidence in Coventry and Warwickshire and, actually, I think for most firms it’s still too early to say. “The political landscape is only starting to settle down and the markets are still searching for a new ‘normal’. “Anecdotally, some companies are telling us again that the uncertainty of what our future with the EU looks like is unhelpful. “We need strong leadership in those negotiations with the EU that satisfies the democratic decision to leave but also ensures we have the best possible trading relationship with such a hugely important market to ensure businesses can Go For Growth. “Our next QES, therefore, will be one of the most interesting we have conducted.”

Swedish industry

comes to Coventry A cluster of leading Swedish industrial companies could be set to establish a UK office in Coventry.

Techtank – cluster of 21 businesses ranging from large manufactures to small engineering companies in the South of Sweden – visited the city last year and now four of its members want to establish a permanent base in the city. The companies have been introduced to the area and its potential for investment by the CW LEP’s Growth Hub and engineering consultant Paul Sullivan, who is based in the city. Craig Humphrey, managing director of the CW Growth Hub, said: “This really is very good news for Coventry and Warwickshire. The visit in November went very well and we were able to showcase the range of potential customers for members of Techtank. “Now after weighing up the potential of Coventry and Warwickshire and how our industries fit with their strengths and capabilities, they have decided to actively move to establish a physical presence here in the city. “We are working with Paul and his company 52 Global to now move that to the next stage.” Anders Borgehed, Cluster Development Manager at

Techtank, says that there is a great appetite to inward investment in the UK. “Many of our member companies are suppliers to the manufacturing industry, not least the automotive sector. Some of them are already doing business in the UK. “We have recognised the enormous growth and potential, and would like to increase our presence here. We are therefore looking to establish a location in the UK which we think will open up new opportunities for our companies. “Coventry is without a doubt our preferred city to do the launch because of its manufacturing and economic status. “The two areas have many things in common, and I think that both can gain from developing the relationship. Our regions also have great support from both sets of Civic leaders. “In addition to that, it is also beneficial for us to take advantage of the various support services available, for example by CW Growth Hub and Chamber of Commerce in Coventry.” The four companies are EBP, PE, Safeman and YTAB who are all involved in different aspects of design and manufacture, with considerable experience in automotive.

The Coleshill Post

By Sukhy Nijar

Director of Sipsey Lingerie Let’s play a game; I say a word and you tell me the first thing that comes to your head. Lingerie; go!

So what did you think of? Sex? Secret? Practical? Or did you think of all three? Now think about why these are the first things that come to mind when you hear the word lingerie. Isn’t it funny that, even in this day and age, people still feel uncomfortable about the words ‘lingerie’ and ‘bra’? Yes, even women; there’s still such a huge taboo on the subject area, it’s almost as if it’s too intimidating to speak about. Coming from an Asian family, discussing what you wear beneath your clothing was always on the list of taboo subjects of conversation. Like I mentioned in my previous story, your mum would just go out and buy some little cotton crop top bra for you when she started noticing your lady lumps growing, “try these on when you get a chance,” she would never mention what “these” were or explain the importance of wearing them. Maybe it was because Asian society had been largely patriarchal in the past, or maybe it was because of the idea that lingerie has been portrayed as largely sexual over the years that stopped the word “bra” from being spoken aloud. Let’s be real for a moment, all women have breasts, it’s not like that’s a secret; so why are women so secretive about what they wear to support those breasts? Maybe they’re scared of being thought of as overly sexual if they talk about it; for the longest time, the lingerie industry has been overly sexualised, with franchises such as Ann Summers and Victoria's Secret encouraging the notion of “sex sells” by advertising their brands as sexual essentials within a woman’s wardrobe. I’m not saying they’re wrong, lingerie is sexy and it’s never had a negative reaction in the bedroom; it’s just that being sexy isn’t its sole purpose. By strictly sexualising lingerie to sell it, we reinforce the notion that women are objects and lingerie exists to dress them up for the pleasure of men. Lingerie is so much more than that. Great lingerie can be the difference between a good day and a great day; so many women carry insecurities about their bodies, and why wouldn’t they? The media is filled with images of women that have been heavily edited, moulded and over sexualised to fit into society’s idealistic portrayal of perfection. How many times have you found yourself staring at the model on the cover of a magazine and wishing for her figure? You have to remind yourself that it’s not real. Great lingerie is the difference between wishing you were a model and feeling like one. These women are

Breaking Taboo beautiful individuals, but so are you. The younger generation is the most impressionable when it comes to body image, it’s so easy to stamp an image in their minds about what “perfect” is. It’s very important for young girls not to compare themselves to the unachievable and heavily sexualised standards of “beauty” portrayed by the media. I want to teach the generation of tomorrow that they are perfect as they are today. Lingerie is a gateway to body confidence and I want to educate younger girls about the difference a matching set of good quality lingerie can make; it’s not just about wearing beautiful lace sets and exquisite silks, sometimes even the right T-Shirt bra can bring out your inner Goddess. But this can’t be achieved if we’re not openly speaking about it. Sex education exists in schools, but body image awareness is still nowhere to be found. Girls aren’t taught about when to start wearing a bra or whether to buy wired or non-wired or even where to get fitted correctly. They aren’t told about how important it is to have a correctly fitted bra and how it could boost their body confidence by wearing one. 7 out of 10 women are wearing the wrong sized bra; this statistic is only this high because in the end it all comes down to education. We need to educate the next generation about the benefits of great lingerie, but before we can do that, we need to eliminate the taboos that surround it. How many of you have daughters? Would you be able to openly speak to them about getting measured or take them bra shopping? As I mentioned last week, I’ve grown up in an Asian household, surrounded by Asian culture. When it came to buying my first bra, I didn’t get a sit-down talk about my newly found need to told about the importance of getting fitted and wearing a bra. Instead I was brought some flimsy cotton crop tops, posing as first teen bras, and told to try them on for size. I have to admit though, times are changing, mothers are now becoming comfortable enough to buy actual first teen bras instead of cotton crop tops, but God forbid your father or brother sees the packaging! I was lucky in the sense that my family doesn’t follow such narrow mindedness when it comes to matters of the female body, I mean hey… I am the proud owner of a lingerie boutique! Don’t get me wrong, the topic is still quite touch and go with the male members but the women of the family are my biggest supporters. This isn’t always the case though; I’ve seen it around me and within my community, women’s bodies are still pretty much a taboo topic of conversation, even amongst other women!

I have to ask; why, even in this day and age, can we still not discuss our bodies openly? Why is it considered embarrassing to speak about getting your daughter’s first bra? I think the problem lays in the fact that Asian culture, in the past and somewhat in the present; has largely patriarchal roots. Women’s bodies are often seen as sexual objects, in a culture where the common attitude towards anything remotely related to sexual, is that it should all be privately handled and never put on display. We all need to wear bras but you won’t ever see any signs of them around the house, what if your father sees, or your brother? They shouldn’t know that you wear one but yet you wouldn’t be able to go in front of them without one. But your brother can walk around in shorts or boxer shorts because there’s nothing sexual about that. So why are women’s undergarments considered sexual? Even in the 21st century, the Asian culture still embodies its orthodox heritage and pushes a powerful emphasis on the notion of chastity, specifically for women, and the very idea of lingerie threatens this chastity by promoting sex. This mindset can’t be solely blamed on a misogynistic society; as I mentioned last week, the blame also falls on the sexualisation of lingerie in the industry. The only way to remove this huge stigma is through education! Stigmatizing a woman’s body doesn’t just harm her body image; it also harms her health. Breast cancer is now the most prominent form of cancer amongst women, especially in the Asian community. But yet nobody speaks about it, and how can they? When just uttering the word breast raises alarms, how can these women express that there may be something wrong with theirs? By specialising in mastectomy fittings as well as lingerie, we see two very different sides of the coin. Ladies that have had to go through the heart breaking procedure and have lost one or both of their breasts and ladies who aren’t able to get fitted out of the shame of it all, but more on that in the future. It always makes us think, there are so many women out there who have to go through the same thing and yet as a community we can’t have a conversation about it. The only way to break the taboo is to openly speak about it; instead of body shaming and vowing silence like nuns, we should embrace what we have and own it! Forget what society says and make yourself a priority; in the end, your body is a temple and you are a Goddess, don’t stay silent!

A daredevil team of climbers is set to swap steel shelving for summiting mountains later this year, all in the name of charity.

Staff at Birmingham-based steel shelving manufacturer ShelvingDirect® will be donning sturdy walking boots as part of a ten day Alpine Challenge, where the team will attempt to climb Mont Blanc and The Matterhorn. The group of four, made up of managing director William White, Matthew Bailey, Christian White and Toby White, has set their sights on climbing two of Europe’s toughest mountains to boost funds for three charities which are close to their hearts; Ochre Oesophageal Cancer Charity, Parkinson’s UK and Omega End of Life Care. Together the group aim to raise more that £15,000 for the good causes and to help others in the community. ShelvingDirect’s® Managing Director, William White says “All of the charities have a personal meaning to one or more members of the group and assist people either at the end of their life or dealing with severe illnesses. “We were looking for an out of the ordinary challenge that would be meaningful and demanding to the participants, which would help us draw attention to and assist in a practical way, three very worthwhile and important charities.” During the event, the team will be assisted by guiding company Mountain Tracks, as well as climbers Robert Salt and Jamie Salt. The group water_orton_dental_jan16.pdf will be climbing Mont1 Blanc, the highest mountain in 04/02/2016 21:50:10 the Alps, before ascending The Matterhorn immediately after. To prepare for the challenge, which will be taking place in Au-

gust, the group has been exercising up to five times a week and has completed training climbs in Snowdonia, so that they are able to cope with the intense physical strain of the climbs and the high level of technical ability required. During the two climbs the team will be exposed to severe weather changes and treacherous landscapes and has taken the necessary precautions so that the challenge can be completed as safely as possible. Mr White said “We are all training hard and trying to exercise. In fact, one of our training climbs is the same route taken by Edmund Hillary and his team while preparing for their famous Everest ascent.” Production manager Matthew Bailey added: “I feel it is a once in a lifetime opportunity. My first child is due in July, so this is maybe something I may not be able to commit to for another 16 years or so. “I am pretty confident about my own level of fitness to climb both mountains. I am however less confident about the technical side of climbing The Matterhorn, and also the effect of being on such a high exposed narrow ridge.” The team will be documenting their trip and posting updates on the social media channels @shelvingdirect1 and will be writing a blog.

FOUR PARAMEDICS, Alex's journey

The Coleshill Post

THREE PEAKS, encounters a ONE BICYCLE! close shave.

Most people can only imagine how hard it is to complete the Three Peaks Challenge; climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon back to back without stopping, but when you plan to cycle between each of the mountains as well, then that really is a real ultra-challenge.

But for one member of the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), that is exactly what he’s planning.

Jethro Bartle, who lives in Solihull will be joined by two current and one recently retired member of the HART team in support roles. Fellow Paramedics Si Greenfield, Andy Wright and Andy Gelesthorpe will be walking each peak with Jethro and then manning a support vehicle during the cycle sections of the challenge. In total there will be about 29 miles of climbing and almost 500 miles of cycling; non-stop! Day to day Jethro works for the HART Team which responds to incidents across the region. The team provides medical care to patients in the hazardous environments such as collapsed buildings, at height or in confined space. They also provide water rescue and flooding as well as chemical and biological incidents. They played a leading role in the tragic events at the recycling plant in Nechells last week. The Three Peaks event begins on Monday 25th July with the ‘simple’ task of a climb up the 4,409 foot Ben Nevis. After that it will be 290 miles of pedalling to the foot of the highest point in England, the 3,210 foot Scafell Pike. After that, there is a further 195 miles of cycling before a final push in the challenge, climbing the 3,560 foot Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales. For most of us, even climbing one of those mountains would be enough; Jethro is planning to do all three and complete the cycling in just three days without stopping. He said: “I’m no stranger to challenging events – I’ve done 24 hour cycle events before and ultra-events, but never put them together. However, I once read a quote by Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa’s first woman president, who said: “If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.” “Clearly the weather will play a part in how long

Visit of Bishop Anne

to St Peter & St Paul's Church

On Sunday 24th July St Peter & St Paul's folks were pleased to welcome Bishop Anne to preach & celebrate at the 9 a.m. Service and preach at the 11 a.m. Service.

Whilst Bishop Anne is technically styled as the Suffragan Bishop of Aston she assists the Bishop of Birmingham, over the whole of the Birmingham Diocese. She is pictured with Rev Paul Tullett the Vicar of Water Orton and two members of the congregation Vera Rathbone and Joy Newman, (who just happened to be passing)!!

it takes but I am confident with the support of my colleagues it should be possible in about three days. At least I’ll have first rate medical care should I need it!” The record for the challenge is 47 hours 47 minutes by former World Ironman Champion Chrissie Wellington who described it as: ‘the hardest thing I have ever undertaken and accomplished’. Jethro added: “I am nervous about it but I’m looking forward to the challenge of pushing myself like never before. I am confident that I can complete it but am hopeful of doing so within three days. I am training hard but with the support of my team I am very much looking forward to this amazing challenge.” Why am I doing it? I’m completing this challenge to raise money for Alzheimer's Research UK. Dementia is the leading cause of death among women in the UK, yet receives only 3% of the medical research budget. Alzheimer's Research UK are working towards identifying the causes, risk factors, treatments, and preventions for the four main types of dementia. I’ve set an initial target of raising £2,000 but if I raise more than that, it would be fantastic.” You can sponsor Jethro at: www.justgiving.com/fundraising/JB-3Peaks or by texting JBPK88 £ (amount) to 70070. All donations are gratefully received.

There was a hair-raising experience for two members of West Midlands Ambulance Service staff on Wednesday night as they braved the shave for Alex’s Journey.

Paramedic Area Support Officer Ian Inglesant and Ambulance Fleet Assistant Paul Rowlands were joined by Rich Prior from Warwickshire Police’s OPU to have their hair shaved off at Warwick Hub, all in aid of a very worthy cause. Nine-year-old Alexander Goodwin was diagnosed with Ewing Sarcoma last month and a fund-raising drive is well underway in order to send him on a dream holiday to Disney World. The efforts of Ian, Paul and Rich have already put Alex one step closer having raised £1200 so far, with the money still rolling in. Speaking about his new look, Ian said: “It is a fantastic cause to raise money for

and if we can help send Alex to Disney World then it will be worth losing every lock of hair. “I’m actually quite surprised that it doesn’t look too bad to be honest. “We’ve raised a superb amount already which we are really pleased with. If we can push it any higher, then all the better!” Paul added: “We were more than happy to do this for Alex to try and help raise some money for him. “I’d urge everyone throughout the ambulance service and beyond to do their bit now and help raise some more money for an extremely brave young boy.” If you would like to donate, or find out more about Alex’s Journey, please visit: https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/AlexandersJourney?utm_id=62. at Coleshill C of E Primary School Nursery! Thanks to the generous fundraising activities of our families, nursery is the proud owner of some new sets of wheels. Our practitioners know the importance of the outside environment to enable children to experience a range of activities. Our new trikes, hand twisters and scooters have become firm favourites in our purpose built early years play garden. We all know that racing around outside is great fun, but did you know that using wheeled toys is a key part of a child’s physical development? Learning any new motor skill involves training our brains to use information from the vestibular system in the head and from proprioception throughout the body to understand our body's position and acceleration from moment to moment. Anything that involves moving our arms or legs in a precise way without looking at them invokes our proprioceptive sense. When children are playing on the trikes they are learning bilateral coordination as they practice working both legs together to turn the pedals. They are strengthening their muscles and im-

proving their balance - building their gross and fine motor skills that will help them with their writing. But most of all, they are enjoying themselves! The waiting list for 2 year old spaces is now open - if you’d like to find out more about our nursery, please email: nursery3586@welearn365.com.

A serial Wolf Run attendee is Denise Farr, and during a conversation at work thought it would be a nice idea for anyone at Silmid to join in on the one being organised in Leamington Spa on September 3rd.

Silmid run as a pack for charity The wolf Run is described by the event organisers as, “The Wolf Run is Wild Running - a unique combination of three kinds of off-road running: mud runs, trail runs and obstacle runs. The only Wild Run in the UK, it’s a hardcore 10k run across raw natural terrain, including open ground, woodland, lakes & thick mud. Running in a pack, or as a lone wolf, you’ll tackle a series of tough obstacles - both manmade and natural - designed to test your mental & physical strength, skill and stamina. You’ll run, climb, jump, wade, crawl and swim through a course designed to challenge you on every level” We thought it would be a great idea to use the event to raise money for a local charity in Coleshill and both Denise and myself approached Woodlands School. Woodlands School is a broad spectrum Special School situated on Packington Lane, and is for students between 2 and 19 years of age. Many of the students have profound and multiple learning difficulties, which include Au-

tism, Cerebral Palsy, ADHD, behavioural and emotional difficulties, physical and sometimes serious medical problems. The majority of the pupils have sensory processing difficulties. The incidence rate in SEND is extremely high. Pupils can be ‘sensory seeking or avoiding’. For some pupils this can be their primary area of need, and act as a significant impediment to learning and well-being. The latest research in Autism had defined that sensory processing difficulties is often a central area of need. Woodlands are continually looking to raise funds in order to provide the specialist equipment the pupils need and deserve. This will prepare them for full engagement and help them to order and make sense of sensory information from the world around them. We at Silmid hope to raise money for the much needed equipment they require from Sensory Rockers, to Fibre Optic Carpets and much, much more. Are we mad; absolutely. Will it be worth it; totally!! A Just Giving page has been set up and we are hoping that the local business and community will help in trying to get us to our target of £5,000. Midlands hotel

group strikes Gold to join elite UK club A family-run hotel group in the Midlands has joined an elite club of employers across the country after being awarded the coveted Investors in People Gold status across its two establishments.

Lea Marston Hotel in North Warwickshire and the Abbey Hotel in Redditch have both been upgraded to the prestigious Gold award, making them the only hotels in Warwickshire and Worcestershire with the top accreditation. Across the UK they join an elite list of hotels to have met the stringent criteria required of the Gold standard in people management. The Lea Marston and Abbey hotels met 169 of the Investors in People evidence requirements, which raised them from Bronze straight to Gold. Across the two hotels, 300 members of staff manage more than 200 rooms, as well as conference and banqueting facilities, restaurants, health spas and a golf course. Lea Marston and Abbey Hotel managing director, Tom Kirkham, said: “This is such a coveted award and shows just how hard we work to create a happy working environment. Our people are at the heart of our organisation and satisfied employees also translates into satisfied customers. We are like one big family. “It’s been a busy few years for the hotels, with lots of investment and growth, and our team

members have played a key role in that success. Over the next 18 months we will be working towards maintaining Gold status and even making further improvements where possible.” As well as meeting all the general requirements set out as part of the Investors in People Standard, the hotels have been focusing on rolling out the employee branding that runs alongside the recent re-branding of the group. This included involving staff to create the strap line ‘delivering a warm welcome’ and the evolving the hotels’ vision and mission. As part of the accreditation, an Investors in People spokesperson said: “The standard is a very challenging one to meet and is increasingly seen as a measure of a quality employer. Your success not only reflects your own commitment, but is also an acknowledgement of the effort of everyone who works for the organisation. I would like to congratulate you and your team on this excellent achievement.” Investors in People has set the standard for better people management since 1991. The internationally-recognised accreditation defines what it takes to lead, support and manage people well for sustainable results. The Investors in People Standard is underpinned by a rigorous assessment methodology and a framework which reflects the very latest workplace trends, essential skills and effective structures required to outperform in any industry.

Birthday candles were blown out at McCarthy and Stone’s Coleshill development, Dugdale Court, as the development celebrated turning one with a celebratory cheese and wine night.

The Retirement Living development, located on the Coventry Road, put on a platter of delicious cheeses and made sure everyone’s glasses were full for the evening’s celebrations, which were enjoyed by the development’s homeowners, team members and guests. To round off the evening, the homeowners cut a cake and raised a glass to mark the development’s anniversary. Amanda Winwood, House Manager at Dugdale Court, commented: “It was so lovely to mark this important first anniversary with our homeowners and team. We have a great sense of community spirit here at Dugdale Court; it’s a real cause for celebration! We have also recently been awarded a 5 star customer satisfaction rating from the Home Builders Federation for the 11th year running, so our homeowners know that they are buying into first-class customer service, as well as a beautiful home.” Exclusively for the over 60s, the development comprises a collection of 38 stunning one and two bedroom apartments, designed to allow purchasers to downsize into a functional and high specification living space, leaving behind the hassles of maintaining a large family home. Robert Monkman, Regional Sales and Marketing Director for McCarthy and Stone West Midlands, said: “The purpose-built apartments at Dugdale Court have been thoughtfully designed to provide practical living solutions which are flexible to the changing needs of older people

through their subtle design features, whilst still remaining contemporary in their layout and style. We’re urging househunters to visit the experienced sales team at Dugdale Court without delay, to learn about the range of purchasing options available to them.” Facilities at Dugdale Court include a stunning homeowners’ lounge ideal for socialising with friends, a games room and library for leisure, plus a convenient guest suite should homeowners have friends or relatives to stay. Another added luxury is the on-site spa treatment room, available to all homeowners and offering a selection of relaxing treatments. The development also has a House Manager who ensures the smooth-running of the development, a security entrance system, plus 24-hour emergency call points for added peace of mind for both homeowners and their families. With only a handful of these fantastic apartments left for sale, the development is encouraging anyone interested to come forward sooner rather than later to make sure they don’t miss out. With a host of offers available throughout July, including McCarthy and Stone’s ‘Move for Free’ scheme, in which the development will pay all stamp duty, solicitor and estate agents frees, as well as 100% Part Exchange, there has never been a better time to choose McCarthy and Stone. No Rogue Trader Zones Come To Coleshill Two ‘No Rogue Trader Zones’ are coming to Coleshill in North Warwickshire under a scheme operated by Warwickshire County Council’s Trading Standards Service and supported by Warwickshire Police.

The new ‘No Rogue Trader Zones’, one in the north and one in the south have been launched today in Coleshill as part of national Scams Awareness Month. 685 properties located in 17 roads in ‘hot spot’ areas across the town will form the new ‘No Rogue Trader Zones’. Warwickshire County Councillor Peter Fowler, elected member for Coleshill said: "No Rogue Trader Zones are a popular initiative in communities across Warwickshire and I'm delighted that Trading Standards are working in partnership with local Police teams to deliver their benefits here in north and south Coleshill." Warwickshire County Councillor John Horner, Portfolio Holder for Community Safety added: ““We know from evidence gathered from other Warwickshire communities with No Rogue Trader Zones that they are very effective in reducing rogue trader and bogus caller incidents.” Warwickshire County Councillor Philip Johnson, Chair of the council’s Overview and Scrutiny Committee added: “Warwickshire

Trading Standards will continue to work to disrupt the activities of rogue traders, protecting consumers and supporting legitimate local businesses.” Warwickshire Police Officer Ellen Beaty said: “If you need some work doing at home then speak to a relative or friend who can help you find a reputable trader. Those traders cold calling often have no formal training, can be over priced and some have links to other criminals. Legitimate traders would never ask you to go to the cash point or bank to withdraw cash.” “Do NOT open the door if you do not know the caller. If you ask them to leave and they don't call 101 or 999.” This latest ‘No Rogue Trader Zone’ is being launched in national Scams Awareness Month which this week focuses on doorstep scams and doorstep crime. Warwickshire Police used an intelligence based approach to identify two areas in Coleshill which might benefit most from the establishment of ‘No Rogue Trader Zones’. Trading Standards then surveyed all 685 households in the two areas. The results revealed that 73% of households had had people knocking on their doors in the last year asking them to buy something or offering to do work for them. 68% of survey respondents considered doorstep sellers a

The top six reported doorstep visits were people selling/offering: 1. Double glazing, replacement windows, conservatories 2. Drive cleaning and sealing, tarmacing and block paving 3. Roofing and roofing repairs, including replacement tiles, roof cleaning and sealing 4. Guttering and fascias, including cleaning and clearing, repairing and replacing 5. Gardening work, including tree felling, tree surgery, tree maintenance, hedge trimming 6. Household goods, including cooking and cleaning products, tea towels, dusters, mattress, carpet, car leathers, Christmas cards.

nuisance in their area and 60% said they were wary of unknown callers at the door. 19% felt vulnerable in such situations. Each property in the new ‘No Rogue Trader Zones’ will be issued with a ‘No Rogue Trader’ door/window sticker and information booklet following the theme of staying safe from cowboy traders. Street signage will reinforce the ‘No Rogue Trader’ message and act as a warning to rogue traders that they will be reported if they attempt to trade in the area. Residents are encouraged to report any suspicious activity to Warwickshire Trading Standards Rapid Response Team via the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06. Trading Standards Officers will reply either in person or by phone to a report of a suspicious caller in the area. Doorstep Crime – What you need to know There are two types of doorstep seller that Warwickshire Trading Standards are concerned about: Rogue traders. These people often work door to door or use professional looking flyers to approach householders. They generally offer maintenance work such as gardening, driveway repair and roofing and quote low prices which are later inflated. The work they carry out is of a very poor standard and sometimes non-existent! They will appear very plausible on the doorstep and may claim

to be working for a neighbour or on behalf of the council. Only after a householder accepts the offer of work can they become intimidating and aggressive if their inflated demands for payment are not met. Rogue traders use false names and addresses and are hard to trace. Victims will find that the rogue traders will attempt to return to offer to carry out more ‘work’. High pressure sales people. These traders, who sell a variety of goods and services including mobility aids, alarm systems and unregulated investments, use pressure selling tactics to rush you in to a decision. They may have no experience or training and could convince you to buy something that is overpriced and that you didn’t really need or want. Warwickshire Trading Standards advises consumers not to buy from unexpected doorstep traders and people who cold-call you on the phone. It’s difficult to tell a good trader from a bad one on the doorstep. If you need work carried out to your home, seek at least three quotes from local traders with reputations to maintain. Wherever possible, go on recommendation. The MPs in question had submitted petitions to the HS2 Lords Committee, but now those petitions have been dismissed and the MPs cannot appear in their own right before the Committee. In their ruling, the HS2 Lords Committee have stated that MPs do not have ‘locus standi’ (the right to be heard) to appear on behalf of their constituents. The Lords had the power to grant the MPs the right to be heard on a discretionary basis, but declined this option. The MPs who have been refused the right to be heard are (from north to south): Craig Tracey, MP for North Warwickshire. Stop HS2 Campaign Manager Joe Rukin responded: “This decision from the House of Lords committee, that in effect MPs cannot represent their constituents, goes completely against all concepts of natural justice and is a very sorry state of affairs. The job of MPs is to represent their constituents, and with HS2 being the biggest single issue in these constituencies, they have basically been banned from doing their jobs.” “This sends a very clear message to those affected by HS2 that the Lords Committee is not really interested in hearing genuine concerns about the project, but just wants to complete the process as quickly as possible, and do not seem to be interested in their supposed primary role to properly scrutinise the plans.”

employment The number of people in employment across Coventry and Warwickshire has risen, according to the Chamber.

In the month to June, there was 4,280 people in Coventry claiming unemployment benefits, down from 4,360 in May. In Warwickshire the figure fell from 3,375 to 3,215. Louise Bennett, chief executive of the Coventry and Warwickshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “It is very positive news that unemployment is continuing to fall across Coventry and Warwickshire. “Nationally unemployment has fallen to an 11-year-low, which again is good news for our economy, given the widespread uncertainty in the run up to the EU referendum. “It’s important we build on this momentum and continue to help support businesses to grow and have the confidence to create further jobs and bring the unemployment figures down even further.

“The Chamber’s Go For Growth campaign, which was launched at the start of the year, is an important strand of the support we are providing to businesses to help ensure the region hits economic growth potential in 2016. “The campaign has built strong momentum throughout the year and helped to raise the profile of our businesses that are achieving success, while also highlighting matters that could be stunting growth. “Skills is one of the key areas of the campaign which we’ve been addressing, to help employers bring in new people and create apprenticeship opportunities. So it is encouraging that employment levels in the area have increased again and will hopefully breed further confidence.”

Housing market growing slowly after Brexit vote By Tim Wallace

Britain’s housing market is still under pressure from April’s tax hikes and June’s vote to leave the EU, with the number of home purchases last month firmly below levels seen last summer.

Mortgage lending is rising, but much of the increase comes from existing home owners taking out new loans to benefit from low interest rates, rather than new purchases. A total of 48,973 homes were bought in June, according to the British Bankers’ Association (BBA), the highest number since October, but that is still down 10pc on the 54,454 sold in June 2015. Buyers borrowed £8.4bn to buy those homes

– an annual increase of 3.5pc - which suggests houses are more expensive, although fewer are being sold. One key impact on the market came from April’s tax hikes for landlords. Lending increased sharply in February and March as buy-to-let investors scrambled to buy homes before stamp duty increased in April. After the tax changes came into effect, lending declined sharply. The EU referendum has also affected the property market. Uncertainty over the economic impact of the Brexit vote has left some potential buyers cautious on spending large sums of money. “The sharp decline in surveys of house price

expectations and profit warnings from estate agents since the vote signals that mortgage demand has fallen further in recent weeks,” said Samuel Tombs from Pantheon Economics. “Meanwhile, little scope remains for mortgage rates to decline further and so revive demand. Although the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee likely will cut interest rates next week, probably to 0.25pc from 0.50pc currently, banks likely will increase lending spreads to account for the higher risk of borrower default, due to the much weaker economic outlook.” Business borrowing also took a knock in June, with the overall stock of loans to non-financial companies dipping by £526m.

That is the first monthly fall of this year and compares with average growth of £393m over the previous six months. “Overall, business confidence was clearly fragile in anticipation of the outcome of the vote, but these results are not a verdict on the health of the economy post-Brexit,” said the BBA’s chief economist Rebecca Harding. “We won’t start to see that data come through until the autumn and any trends before then should not be over-interpreted.” There is also the possibility that overseas buyers might begin to snap up more British property to take advantage of a weaker pound, which has made homes relatively cheaper for foreign investors.

North Warwickshire

North Warwickshire Borough sulted on plans for 3,300 houses but now Council this week released ambi- needs to find approximately 3,500 additious plans to bring much needed tional houses. jobs, houses and investment to Speaking ahead of the meeting, Leader of the Borough. Local authorities are required to provide up-to-date plans for the housing and employment needs of their areas. New rules require them to ‘significantly boost’ the supply of housing based on independent assessments of what is needed. The plans released this week will run to 2031. The Borough faces unprecedented pressure to provide housing and has decided to deal with the issue positively by planning the growth, rather than wait to be picked off by speculative developments that would place development in sensitive areas and without much needed infrastructure. The area has had decades of very low growth - the population only grew by 100 between 2001 and 2011 - and Councillors plan to use the unavoidable growth to spark investment in congested roads and other facilities that have seen very little improvement for years. The Council intends to consult widely on the plans from the Autumn after the plans are considered by Councillors at a meeting on 3rd August. The Council has already con-

the Council Councillor David Humphreys said:

' We appreciate that this represents quite a change for the Borough but as with every other area, we cannot avoid making proper provision for the houses and jobs that are needed. The crisis in the housing market is well acknowledged and we will continue to fail future generations if we don't provide a place for them to live. “ We have, therefore, decided not to duck this issue and will use the development pressure to kick start much needed changes to our creaking roads and medical facilities. We have managed to do this whilst protecting the vast majority of our Green Belt. For more information, see the reports for the Subcommittee at: www.northwarks.gov.uk/meetings/meeting/671/local_development_framework_ sub_committee

Coleshill facilities firm clinches six-figure deals

The Coleshill Post

A Midlands facilities services company is on course for another record year of turnover after securing a clutch of long-term, six-figure deals nationwide. Diamond Facilities Support (DFS), based in Coleshill, has signed a two-year deal with Swinton Insurance to maintain around 200 of its branches nationwide, creating a handful of fieldbased jobs in the process. Over the two years, DFS will provide a 24-hour reactive helpdesk, along with compliance such as gas servicing, electrical testing and emergency lighting. It comes after an additional three-year, six-figure contract was also secured with care provider HFT and then a clutch of other contracts with Orchard Care Homes and Lighthouse Health Care. All providing a 24-hour reactive helpdesk, reactive maintenance and quoted works nationwide.

The news is encouraging for DFS which is aiming to top last year’s record turnover of £5.7 million by reaching the £8 million mark in 2016. These deals are the latest coup for the Midlands firm which has attracted other big companies such as The Range and JD Sports, creating over 100 jobs since its inception in 2010. Adam Atkins, managing director at Diamond Facilities Support, said: “We’re delighted to be able to secure these contracts to add to our growing client base. “We are now approaching 30 clients spread across so many different sectors – from gymnasiums and restaurants to care homes and retailers – so it’s fantastic that we have been able to branch into the insurance sector for the first time. “The addition of Orchard Care Homes and Lighthouse Health Care also consolidates our presence in the care home sector, as we already provide services to the likes of HFT and Octopus

Healthcare. “Our growth can largely be put down to the tailored, responsive service that we provide to suit each business. Our services are broken down into six divisions so clients are able to identify the specific ones that work for them or alternatively take our fully integrated service. “Whether it is simply reactive works, or managing our clients’ whole supply chain, ensuring they are getting value for money is our top priority. “This is an extremely exciting period for the business as we expect this growth to continue over the coming months with existing customers and deals with other national companies.” For more information about DFS, visit: www.diamond-fs.com.

Warwickshire housebuilder pledges to help retirees move for free to encourage downsizing in the region.

Warwickshire retirees want to downsize from their large family homes and release valuable equity, but feel unable to do so in the current market, according to a recent report. The research, conducted by McCarthy and Stone, shows that 30% of homeowners in the West Midlands over the age of 55, are considering or expect to consider downsizing but a lack of suitable housing options is preventing them from moving. The research highlights that in the West Midlands, 18% expect to release more than £100,000 in equity when downsizing, but there is currently little incentive or choice available to help them make the move. Added to this, concerns over costs associated with moving home, such as stamp duty fees, removal costs, estate agents and legal fees, mean many are not taking advantage of the downsizing opportunity. The retirement housebuilder is offering to pay stamp duty on all new reservations between now and 31 July on

two of its latest sites: St Clements Court in Atherstone and Dugdale Court in Coleshill. The incentive will see stamp duty costs deducted from the price of an apartment at the point of completion, saving retirees thousands of pounds when downsizing. In addition, hefty estate agent fees which can also be off putting when making the decision to downsize will be covered up to the value of £12,000, as well as removal costs and any legal fees not exceeding £2,000 *. The company hopes this latest scheme will encourage the take-up of more specialist retirement housing in the region, and therefore increase the number of people downsizing, which will in turn free up under-occupied housing for first time buyers and families and keep things moving for the housing market more generally. It will also help retirees to make the most of the many lifestyle benefits of moving to a McCarthy and Stone development. Existing home-owners stress positives such as lower household maintenance, where this taken care of by the on-site Management team, thus leaving more time to spend with friends and family. In addition, the opportunity for companionship and to be part of a thriving community of like-minded people, with the independence of having your own apartment, a range of local amenities right on your doorstep, encourage an active lifestyle, but with help and support at hand if needed." Robert Monkman, Regional Sales & Marketing Director, commented: “We’re introducing this ‘Move For Free’ offer at two of our key developments in Atherstone and Coleshill to try and alleviate some of the financial barriers preventing older people from moving, while encouraging retirees who are perhaps thinking about their future health and social care needs and how they will pay for this support, to proactively consider the different housing options and lifestyle benefits available to them in later life. “It is essential that we have the right infrastructure and services in place to cater for the specific needs and requirements of our ageing population, and this includes the provision of retirement housing and housing with care that keeps people healthier, happier and active for longer. “By helping retirees to overcome some of the financial barriers to downsizing, this will enable them to realise the proven benefits of moving to a McCarthy & Stone development such as reduced property maintenance, comfort and security, releasing equity, and improved physical wellbeing as a result of greater independence whilst being part of community of like-minded people.” For more information on the Move For Free offer and the sites McCarthy and Stone currently has under construction in the West Midlands please visit: www.mccarthyandstone.co.uk/warwickshire

A proposal has been submitted for the construction and operation of a Renewable Energy Centre (REC) on the industrial site at Faraday Avenue, Hams Hall. Developer Rolton Kilbride has submitted the application to Warwickshire County Council for the centre that will provide 14.5 MW/h of electricity and 1.5 MW/hr of heat. Up to 20 new jobs could be created by the Energy Centre, which would recover renewable energy from residual waste after all recycling has taken place. The heat and electricity could be exported to commercial energy users in Hams Hall. This would benefit local businesses through reducing their operating costs, supporting their economic viability and potential growth. Managing waste locally could potentially reduce waste management and transport costs for the Local Authority, enabling funds to be redirected to other services. As part of the application, Rolton Kilbride has undertaken a full Environmental Impact Assessment, which will be examined in detail during the process. Ian Crummack, spokesman for Rolton Kilbride comments: “Submitting our application is not the end of consultation for Rolton Kilbride. We will continue to work with the community to address any queries they

We have also produced a full set of FAQs which can be viewed by visiting www.hamshallenergy. co.uk/.” Rolton Kilbride held a public exhibition at the Lea Marston hotel in May to set out the proposals. If planning permission is granted, the energy centre could become operational in approximately three years.

Jaguar Land Rover, Ford & BMW could open shared electric vehicle battery plant By Jimi Beckwith JLR is holding talks with Ford and BMW ers. Jaguar is believed to already be developing its first about building a battery factory for future all-electric car, based on the F-Pace, although it remains tight-lipped on the model ahead of its unveiling. electric vehicles. Although in its early stages, it’s believed that Jaguar is keen to get the project started and build its first all-electric car, according to a report published by The Times. All three companies have plans for their own electric vehicles, and with Tesla currently dominating the electric vehicle market, each is keen to grab its share of the growing demand. JLR currently doesn’t have an electric vehicle in either its Jaguar or Land Rover ranges, so it doesn’t build its own EV batteries. Ford’s batteries for the Focus Electric are produced in collaboration with a subsidiary of LG, while BMW sources its batteries from Samsung. A joint battery factory between the brands would benefit all three manufacturers. The plans fit the EV timescale for all three manufactur-

Ford has also courted speculation that it will produce an electric model after it blocked Tesla’s attempt to use the ‘Model E’ moniker. The Model E name would be a nod to the Model T, as well as signifying the car’s electric powertrain. An all-electric BMW i8 is also in the pipeline but will not come to fruition before the current model’s imminent mid-life refresh. BMW and Jaguar’s flirtation with the Formula E race series also signposts the brands’ electric vehicle ambitions. When contacted for comment, spokesmen from both Jaguar Land Rover and Ford were unable to give any more information on the plans, which they described as "speculation". A BMW spokesman was unavailable for comment at the time of writing.

Old Salts Combined Under 14s summer barbeque sizzles to a fantastic achievement Saturday July 16th saw the first ever fund raising barbecue held by the team and what a resounding success it was for both the team.

Nearly 200 people attended the event and helped raise a whopping £1060.00 towards the team’s tour fund for next season’s journey down to Exmouth. The coaches and players themselves would like to extend a MASSIVE THANK YOU to all of the people who attended the event, which was a huge success. The food, weather and attendees all helped make the day a very enjoyable one. The only people to get wet on the day were the coaches who unfortunately got a soaking from players and friends alike Perhaps bigger buckets and far bigger sponges are needed next time!!!!! Players beware proper training starts in 6 weeks and coaches have good memories. The team would like to extend a big Thank You to Tesco(Water Orton), Morrisons(Coleshill), The Polash Restaurant, WASPS RFC ( not to mention an appearance by STING) and Delta Force for their kind donation. Your support is greatly appreciated. Role on the 2016-2017 season.

Boxing

Boxfit UK launches #TogetherWeBox to Support Women in Boxing With the on-going success of females promotion in the sport of boxing, Myself and Birmingham's all female (WBC) have teamed up with www.boxfit.com to help promote women in boxing all over the country.

This combination is also backed by many female fighters/ boxers who also want women's boxing treated in a positive way also. I am very pro active with promoting women's boxing in a positive way and Urge everyone in boxing to also back the boxfit campaign. This year Boxfit UK have launched a campaign called Together We Box to get women into boxing and support both professionals and beginners that already box. The campaign quickly got the attention of GB boxers Stacey Copeland and Jade Ashmore, who were swiftly joined by Lisa Whiteside, Valerian Spicer and Laura Pain as ambassadors. Sport is for everyone and there’s no place for gender in-

equality - that’s the core message of this campaign. Owner Ken Mills who spearheaded #TogetherWeBox aims to raise awareness of inspirational women and role models, to have a positive impact on beginners who may be wondering if boxing caters to them. Ken states: “I can only see the passion behind this sport growing, especially as we reach out to a wider female audience and I’m so pleased with the response so far and the feedback we’ve achieved in these early stages. We have a lot of women customers both that shop in store and online, who are dedicated and passionate and we wanted to provide a bigger platform to encourage all women to discuss the pro and cons within the sport, from equipment to the gym that they train at, plus to encourage any female who is thinking of starting out. No one should feel like they can’t take up boxing; it’s a universal sport”. With 2017 marking just twenty years of legal professional female boxing in the UK, it’s an anniversary that should

be full of progression and female athletes in the limelight. There’s work to be done but what we’re doing is celebrating everyone who boxes and has that passion for the sport. How you can get involved: If you’d like to support us and love to box, use the hashtag #TogetherWeBox and tag Boxfit UK on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We’d love to see your photos from the gym, training and even see your journey of starting to box; whether it’s for fitness or competitively. You can also visit our women’s range https://www.boxfituk. com/womens.irc and get in touch with any feedback on our clothing, equipment and accessories, good or bad. Also, what would you like to see more of? Email info@boxfituk.com with the subject line #TogetherWeBox Feedback. As the message reaches more people, we hope to get closer to gender equality and have everyone working together for this hugely respected sport.
