LIFESAVING volunteers at Midlands Emergency Response have vowed to continue responding in their OWN vehicles while their marked response car has been forced off the road because of a row about reflective markings. New government legislation has been brought into force which now bars the use of reflective material in the vehicle’s distinctive battenburg livery, meaning it is now effectively illegal for the medics to use their vehicle until a new design is agreed and approved. continued on page 2

...continued from front page M.E.R is among dozens of community first responder groups across the West Midlands affected by the new law. The charity, based at Coleshill fire station, provides trained community first responders (CFRs) who support West Midlands Ambulance Service by responding to life threatening 999 calls in Coleshill and the surrounding towns and villages. M.E.R first responders raised thousands of pounds to buy their Peugeot estate car, which is equipped with life-saving kit and expensive communications equipment, but now face weeks of uncertainty about when they will be able to use it again. But the volunteers have vowed they will continue to attend life-threatening 999 emergencies in their own vehicles while the issue is resolved. Darren Tranter, WMAS CFR Regional Forum Governor and Chairman of M.E.R said: “It is a very disappointing situation that we have a response car which we can’t use, so I am working very closely with West Midlands Ambulance Service to find a way forward and get our car, and the many others affected back on the road as soon as possible”. “There are lots of discussions being had including new designs for vehicle livery which will I believe may become the standard across the board for CFR groups in the West Midlands. I am assured of the full support of WMAS. The important point at the moment and one which I’m extremely proud of, is that our of team of responders has agreed that while this situation is being resolved, we will continue responding to 999 calls, and if that has to be by using our own cars then that’s what we’ll do”. West Midlands Ambulance Service is supporting all of the CFR schemes affected by the issue and is working hard to ensure schemes such as M.E.R can continue to respond and look after the communities they serve. Emma Bogle, head of Community Response at WMAS said she was confident groups will be in a position to continue to provide care to their local communities. She said “we are working with each of the schemes to establish how the legislation will affect them. Some will be affected, others won’t”.

The Coleshill Post - June 2015 - Issue 22
Cllr Taylor: It has been an honour to represent you BY CLLR HARRY TAYLOR It was with mixed emotions that I handed over the Mayoral chain on Wednesday May 28th at the first meeting of Coleshill Town Council since the elections in early May.
There was a feeling of sadness that the year is over but also a sense of excitement that there is now a new Mayor, Cllr Kirsteen Wootton, who will put a different spin on the role. I began the Mayoral year by attending a Twinning Association event in which representatives of Coleshill’s French twin town Chassieu were joined by Coleshill residents in a celebration. I have fond memories of speaking to the attendees with Paul Buckingham translating for me. There was also a Morris dancing demonstration and I quickly realised that if you’re wearing a shiny chain then you can’t hide when they’re looking for dancers. I think that set the tone for the year; good fun, good company and slightly daft antics but a serious side also. This latter point highlighted when I sent the people of Chassieu our deepest sympathies after the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris in January. There are many dinners and balls across Warwickshire which as the Mayor you are expected to attend. I did my best to attend these though they were never as interesting or enjoyable as the other events with what I’d term real people, like the two events I attended at the Mary Ann Evans Hospice at the George Eliot. I met some great patients there, some from Coleshill and Water Orton, whose sense of humour in difficult times was uplifting. Remembrance Day in November was particularly poignant and I wrote in this paper at the time that I remember attending these events as a young boy with my grandfather Harry Taylor, a veteran of the Burma campaign, and the other ex-servicemen. Many, including granddad, are now gone but I was incredibly proud to be laying the wreath and remembered him and the other people I have known who served or have

Announcement from the Editor in Response to Attacks in Election Leaflet BY RICHARD HARWOOD Contrary to accusations made in election material distributed by members of Coleshill Conservative Party on the eve last month’s election, I would like to reassure our readers and advertisers that the Coleshill Post is not a party political newspaper. died in service to our country. There were events at Coleshill, Bedworth, Nuneaton, Kenilworth, Kingsbury, Whitnash, Leamington, Solihull, Water Orton and even Warwick Castle to name a few of the places I visited as the Civic head. In all I attended 51 events officially with my deputy and now Mayor of Coleshill, Cllr Kirsteen Wootton, attending in my absence. Many Mayors are retired, paid a salary, or do not have to work so it is tough to keep up the schedule as well as working full time and I need to thank the staff at Atherstone Accident Repair Centre for their support and understanding. I would like to thank the previous Town Council and in particular former councillors Bill Richards and Dave Simkin, themselves former Mayors of the town, for encouraging me to take on the role. I am forever grateful that they did. It has been a busy year and I couldn’t have done it without my consort Jane Hopkins, Deputy Mayor Kirsteen Wootton and my supportive and understanding fiancée Hannah. They have in their own ways been of great support, even if they didn’t realise it at the time. I’d also like to thank the staff of the Town Council; Di, Helen, Zoe, Kate and Colin who between them have organised my diary around my work commitments, organised and provided food and teas for annual events and charity events I have held. It is important that as a town we do this and make the effort to do it. I met a few dignitaries when I began the role who hadn’t heard of Coleshill or didn’t know where it was. Memorably one of them claimed Coleshill was “one of those deprived areas up there”. I put them right and was pleased that so many dignitaries from across Warwickshire attended my charity concert in February. The concert raised funds for the Community First Responders and as my chosen charity they received further donations from local groups and businesses totalling around £1500. Finally to the people of Coleshill: It has been an honour to represent you. Best Wishes, Harry Taylor

given equal opportunity and space for press releases and articles. The fact that one party
on the whole has been much more diligent in meeting print deadlines and supplying columns and comment when asked by me is not the fault of this paper. For example since I launched the Coleshill Post in summer 2013 I have been continuously promised a column and comments on local issues from Cllr Peter Fowler. I am yet to receive anything. As the Editor I cannot write articles and comments on behalf of other people. It is up to them themselves. Members of the public have contacted me to say they witnessed
Cllr Fowler and others delivering this leaflet through their doors. I find that very sad because I have actively encouraged Cllr Fowler to contribute in this paper and put his side across yet he has chosen not to. Finally, I, Richard Harwood am the only editor of the Coleshill Post and have been since it was launched. Adam Farrell is not, as was claimed in the Conservative Party leaflet, the Editor of this paper. Thanks for supporting your free local press,

COLESHILL Town Band has been honoured with the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK.
The citation given for the award is “Promoting traditional brass band music throughout Warwickshire and the West Midlands – advancing the education and musical experience of brass players of any age and ability through appropriate coaching and training”. Musical Director, Stephen Fagg and Band Chair, Wendy Donnelly attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace on 20 May 2015 where they met the Queen and other winners of this year’s award. Coleshill Town Band is one of 187 charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The number of awards handed out to groups have increased by over 60% from 2014, due to an increase in high quality applications, showing that the voluntary sector is thriving and full of innovative ideas to tackle community challenges. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to local volunteer groups across the UK to recognise outstanding work in their communities. The awards were created in 2002 to celebrate the Queen’s Golden Jubilee and winners are announced each year on 2 June – the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation. Award winners this year range from Ablaze, a charity helping to raise academic achievement amongst disadvantaged young people in Bristol to a volunteer rescue boat service on Loch Lomond. Coleshill Town Band will receive the award from the Lord Lieutenant of Warwickshire later this summer. The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service Committee Chair, former broadcast journalist Martyn Lewis CBE said: “I warmly congratulate all of the inspirational voluntary groups who have been rewarded for their community work with a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service. The judging panel for this year’s awards were struck by the quality and breadth of all the successful groups. The thousands of volunteers who give up spare time to help others in their community and to help solve problems demonstrate the best of democracy in action.” Minister for Civil Society, Rob Wilson, said: “I would like to congratulate all groups who received this year’s Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, in recognition of their fantastic achievements. The hard work and commitment that goes into the work of these organisations is surpassed only by the passion and motivation of the individuals who vol-
unteer. I hope these groups continue to inspire others to get involved and make a positive impact so that we can continue to build a bigger, stronger society.” Musical Director of Coleshill Town Band, Stephen Fagg, said: “Receiving this award is the highlight of my twenty years as Musical Director of Coleshill Town Band and the culmination of a lot of hard work by all the members of the band past and present. All the musicians of the three Coleshill Band’s give their time voluntarily and do so because they enjoy making music together and sharing it with others. This award is something we can all celebrate in and use to take the band forward on to the next chapter in it’s long and successful history.” Band Chair, Wendy Donnelly, said: This is an amazing achievement for us and I am very proud to have been able to represent the organisation along with Stephen when recently attending Buckingham Palace. This is, however, without doubt an award that everyone across all of our bands – Coleshill Town Band, Coleshill Youth Brass and Coleshill Beginner Brass will be sharing in as it is about the organisation as a whole, past and present. We look forward to celebrating with our members, supporters and the community of Coleshill in the very near future. Bill Richards, recently appointed as Honorary Band president, said: “I am delighted that CTB has been successful, in this very competitive process, for the award of QAVS. The detailed submission having been thoroughly evaluated regionally and subsequently recommended to national assessor for a final decision. What a fantastic recognition of the Band’s achievements in our community. I have been privileged to witness the development of an exciting strategy for the Town Band over the last decade and the consistently high profile they have taken in local and charitable events. The influence of the Town Band in Coleshill has been sustained through imaginative planning and management - and the amazing investment of time and effort by band members. A prime feature has been the recruitment of school-age children to the world of brass band music. We have all witnessed the energy and impressive skill levels attained in performance by CBB’s and CYB. This award is a major, national recognition of the voluntary work done by the Town Band in our community. Coleshill is so fortunate to have such a committed and exciting local organisation and we should be so proud of them.”

Water Orton Art Circle Celebrates it’s 50th Birthday
WHILE you’re out enjoying the Carnival in Water Orton on Saturday 20th June, why not take a few minutes to enjoy the work of local artists at The Link.
Members of the Water Orton Art Circle are celebrating their 50th birthday by holding an exhibition along with children from Water Orton Primary School. The event will take place between 10am-4pm.
REGULAR COLUMN
I want to start this column by saying thank you. Thank you to all those people in Coleshill North who re-elected me to represent them on Coleshill Town Council and for electing me as one of the two Borough Councillors for the area.
I’m really proud to represent the area where I was brought up, went to school and brought my first home. I really do care about Coleshill and want the best of everything for our town but I know the two positions I now hold are not going to be easy. There will be a lot of hard work, brick walls and difficult decisions. I will always do my best and I will always put Coleshill first. Election night saw a terrible result for the Labour Party nationally. This meant we also lost out in the North Warwickshire constituency and we lost control of North Warwickshire Borough Council. This makes the result in Coleshill North even more memorable as we defied the national swing against Labour. I hope this was as a result of the positive plan local Labour candidates put forward for our town. We decided that facts were more important than attacks and we resisted the ‘he said, she said’ type of politics too often seen in the national press. Elections are a very tiring but enjoyable experience. It brings together family, friends and supporters all working for a common goal. Locally the Labour Party had around 50 local people supporting our campaign. Some people had never been involved before, others were experienced campaigners. My granddad helped to man the polling station, my girlfriend Jen was ringing voters and my mom and dad helped delivered thousands of leaflets. Thank you to everyone who helped elect me and the other Labour candidates in Coleshill. I’m proud to have been part of a positive and friendly campaign. Unfortunately a last minute leaflet put out by the Conservative party brought down the tone of local politics. It was full of false claims that I was the Editor of the Coleshill Post, Labour Councillors had inappropriately used Town Council facilities and that I had libeled former MP Dan Byles. Like many residents I saw this last minute attack leaflet as a pretty desperate attempt to win the election. It is important to set the record straight. No Town Councillor of any party of the 2011-2015 administration has inappropriately used Town Council facilities. If the Conservatives have any evidence to suggest otherwise they should produce it or they should withdraw their accusation and offer a public apology. Secondly I am not the Editor of the Coleshill Post and thirdly if I had libeled Mr Byles I am confused as to why the matter has not been taken any further. Frankly this last minute leaflet was a pretty appalling way to treat the electorate and has cast a shadow over the way the election was conducted. I’m very clear that my priority over the next four years will be to properly represent local people, not engaging in petty, personal and aggressive attacks. Once again I want to thank everyone who voted for me and to everyone living in Coleshill North, I will do my very best. I won’t let you down.

FOLLOWING the successful Spring Market in March at the Visitor Centre, Old Market Hall, Church Hill the next market will be held on Saturday 20th June from 10am to 4pm in the same location.
Over 200 people passed through the visitor centre during the day and they were treated to some wonderful local products and services such as delightful cupcakes, framed photos, hand made silver jewellery, bags and purses, records, faux fur hats, craft accessories and aloe vera products. The market coincides with Bargains of yesteryear at the Town Hall and people are encouraged to take a walk along the high street and sample local shops and cafes. Coleshill Community Partnership are organising the event in conjunction with Discover Coleshill and Love Coleshill to increase footfall to the High Street and promote local loyalty, so why not put a date in your diary for the Summer Market on Saturday 20th June and support your local independent traders? Outside the Market Hall Love Coleshill will have 250 bottles of water to give away to co-incide with ‘Bike Week’ which is an annual opportunity to promote cycling and show how cycling can easily be part of everyday life by encouraging cycling for everyone. WOW, we are very pleased to say that we now have over one hundred members and I'm sure that part of the appeal are the fantastic groups run by our members for our members.
There are a variety of them to get involved with, both for men and women, ranging from languages, card games and scrabble, play reading, music and swimming. Walking and rambling, fabric craft plus much more. One of our largest groups is the History Group where we have talks and visits to interesting and historical places. One such was an informative talk about the restoration of Birmingham Back to Back houses by a conservation specialist with a recent follow up visit. Knowing the history, pre restoration, helped us to identify different features and projects. The National Trust have dressed three of the houses at differing times to bring the story alive, and an excellent job they've done. I particularly liked the old fashioned sweet shop on the corner which evoked many a childhood memory. Thanks go to Sue for all her hard work organising us. The talk at our May meeting was by David Jones
from Compton Verney, an award winning art gallery and park which is near to Wellesbourne in Warwickshire. Sir Peter Moore had been looking for a site to use as an art gallery when he came across a derelict building at Compton Verney. There were two farmsteads on the site during Roman times and the area was named in the Domesday Book. After a very chequered past including use by the forces in the second world war Sir Peter bought the house and grounds and restoration started in 1994. It has cost nineteen million pounds but is now finished . The enterprise is a charity which relies on footfall to pay the bills and is also used for weddings, exhibitions, workshops, concerts and much more. Children are very welcome and events are specially organised to appeal to families. Thanks to David for an interesting talk....he assured us that there are 'more exciting things to come at Compton Verney'. Our next monthly meeting is on Monday 15th June at 10.30 when our talk is on 'The Work of Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance Team'.

Water Orton Villager
The Coleshill Post
PARISH CLERK
Welcome to ‘The Villager’ Summer 2015 Summer is here at last. The football season has finished and the playing field is now on its summer holidays.
The Pavilion is starting to get used more by the local community (see article elsewhere for hire details and the local club contacts). I would like to thank Nathan Smith for the Caretaking Services he provides. The Village still has issues arising from HS2 and local groups are working tirelessly to mitigate the impact on the Village. There is only one out going Parish Councillor, Wendy Rees who has retired after many years serving on the council. I would like to express my thanks to her for the hard work she has put in on your behalf and of the Parish Council over the years. Without Wendy the Village would be missing many amenities and look a lot less like a Village. Our grounds man Colin Brookes does a tremendous job as my eyes and ears as to what is going on in the Village. He keeps on top of items such as graffiti and removes it when it appears. He keeps the football pitch maintained and marked out. He also keeps the open spaces clean and tidy. Again this year the planters in the Village have been sponsored by Orchard Nurseries, Birmingham Road and a big thank you to them. I would like to thank again the volunteers who patrol the village litter picking. Whilst the Borough Council does a splendid job in the general bin emptying etc the general appearance and cleanliness of the village is down in no small part to the army of volunteers. Our library is staffed by volunteers’ but to obtain the books for the shelves it needs to be used! There needs to be thank you to those volunteers’ who give up their time so the library and it’s facilities can be shared by all the community. Opening times Friday and Saturday 9am to 5pm. Don’t forget to support Water Orton Carnival on the 20th June 2015, the folks organising the event work all year round to ensure the event is a success and the Village charities benefit from the money raised. If you cannot be at the Carnival please support the event and buy a Programme as the volunteers’ will be selling the programmes “door to door” over the next few weeks. The new Parish Council sat for the first time this month, there is a vacancy for a further Councillor. If any of you are interested in becoming Parish Councillors please contact either the Parish Clerk or any of the existing Parish Councillors who will be only too willing to answer any questions you may have about becoming a Parish Councillor. This can be a very rewarding role in Village life. This publication is only as good as the articles in it, if in the future you want to tell people something or mention a good deed done for the community in the Village please contact me and we will try to include it in future publications. Finally I would like to wish you all a long and pleasant summer. Best wishes Jacquie Coombes, Clerk to the Parish Council 0121-749-2445 | clerk@wopc.org.uk
GROUNDSMAN
Summer is almost here Summer is nearly upon us already, the tubs and troughs around the Village are prepared for replanting to give us colour for the summer.
With thanks to Orchard Nurseries, Birmingham Road who supply all the plants and whose staff create the displays. There are three extra dog waste bins sited around the Village, two on Coleshill Road and one opposite Openfield Croft. These have been placed in these locations since the last article in the hope it helps with the continual problem of dog mess. The goal post sleeves have been removed from the ground and the hole’s covered over. The holes will be dug out again next season and re-moveable bespoke covers that are safe to walk over are been manufactured. The youths have been fairly good so far this year as regards to litter in the two parks. Just the occasional bad day, if your children are off to the park just remind them to pick up their litter but to be fair most do!

SERIES CONTINUED: The Coleshill and District Civic Society HERITAGE
The Coleshill Post
PART FIVE In 1996 an exhibition was held in the Parish Church entitled ‘Coleshill and the Digbys’, which so impressed Simon Digby, that he offered the ‘Stocks Club’, or the ‘Institute’ as it was also known, to the Civic Society, This was on condition that they would renovate it and allow it to be used by the people of Coleshill.
Lord Mayor Cup
This had always been the Society’s intention. He knew about Peggs Barn, so knew we had the expertise. Brian Teall, who was now our Chairman, agreed to manage the project. The building was renamed ‘The Old Market Hall’, which it had been in former years. It had been adapted from two old cottages in 1863 by the Digby’s, when they had added an upper story in the form of a hall. This was to replace the original market hall which had been in the middle of the road. The pillory and Stocks was resited outside it. The building, known as the Institute, was originally a reading room and library upstairs and an open market hall downstairs, with three open arches facing into Church Hill, secured by three sliding iron fence gates. Inside there were three bays divided by two lovely arches. In effect it served as Coleshill’s first town hall until the
The Old Market Hall
new one was built in 1926. The Grammar School then used it as a carpentry workshop from 1930 until 1956. The RAF Association then occupied it from 1957 to1977, and Coleshill Scouts used it after that. The RAFA had installed toilets, which were rather antiquated, and the Scouts had divided the downstairs into several “dens” with brick walls separating them. All the front arches were filled by very ugly doors. Upstairs a false ceiling had been inserted, obscuring the lovely open-beamed roof. All the necessary planning and listed building permission was obtained, and members of the Civic Society were recruited as labourers for the project. Every Saturday between twelve and fifteen would turn up and work away. Brian Teall supervised the work, finding work for the varied skills of each volunteer. Internally downstairs the building was almost gutted. At the back of the building there was a half cellar, which was designed for the new toilets. The three front arches were opened up, the two outside were glazed with iron fences in front, and the middle arch initially had glass doors, later replaced with oak doors.
The inside stairs did not comply with fire regulations and the old metal fire escape at the back did not either, so an extension was built at the back containing a concrete staircase, a boiler and a store room. It was decided to employ professional bricklayers. The concrete stairs arrived ready-made. Complete re-plastering, the electrical works and the central heating were done by experts, but members of the Civic Society did all the painting right up to the top of the roof. The toilet fittings came from a redundant army barracks in Sutton Coldfield as did the parquet floor which the members re-laid. During the renovation, fund raising was frantic with special events and appeal brochures. Anyone could buy a floor tile for a pound and have it engraved with their name. After three years hard work £40,000 had been raised for the renovation. The Old Market Hall was finally opened in 1999 by the Duke of Gloucester, a qualified architect who knew just what the restoration had involved. In November 2012 there was a major renovation of the upper floor made possible by a generous grant from the SITA TRUST supplemented by a donation from the Warwickshire County Council Councillor Grant Fund.
Exhibition of local history In 1900 Coleshill Town councillors were Alderman and the leader was called the Lord Mayor. He decided to donate a cup, first presented in 1909, to The Coleshill Lord Mayor’s Root Growers Association. This was awarded to various farmers, most of them Aldermen over the years. After winning the cup three times, in 1932, Alderman King was presented with the cup. The cup stayed with the family until 2011 when after Miss Sadie King passed away her niece, carrying out her aunts wishes, presented the cup to Coleshill Civic Society and we now have it on display in the Old Market Hall.
In 1993 the Civic Society at last found a place to hold their exhibitions of Local History. They leased the Colehaven Meeting House from Mr John Sumner and formed a ‘Friends of the Museum’ Society.
The first exhibition was ‘Victorian Coleshill’. Annual exhibitions continued there until the Society moved into the Old Market Hall in 1999. The most successful exhibition, however, was not in either of these places but in the old ‘Back Lane’ school. It was the History of Schools Exhibition in 1997, organised by Rex Tillson. Over 900 attended. In 1995 the ‘Story of Coleshill’ was published –still on sale. Early events were held in the garden of the old library, Coleshill House, on Coventry Road, one of these involving children dancing round a Maypole. On a lovely sunny day a good time was had by all. It is perhaps appropriate, after the last three items to mention the involvement of Dr J Stuart. After the retirement from the committee of Dr Wall and Canon Morgan the inspiration of many events was down to Dr Stuart. He was very involved in the saving of the Town
Hall action, inspired the action against the Northern Relief Road and in general came up with the ideas which were the inspiration of the various exhibitions and initiatives the Civic Society were involved in. He wrote chapters in the Georgian Book and cajoled others into writing chapters they had little interest in. The Roman event was down to him although the ancient roman with red hair and tartan skirt did appear in rather a lot of events.

Coleshill's finest Lady Stig takes on: THE FUTURE 'Bellies and In-crowds'
The Coleshill Post
SO, for this month’s installment, part 2 “rabbit stew again?”, I went to a lot of trouble to contact my great great great granddaughter who lives in the year 2115.
All I needed to do to achieve this seemingly impossible feat was to bury a time capsule! This capsule was in the form of a small metal box from ikea with a smart leather strap which probably won’t last. I dug a hole for it in my garden underneath the sundial, and put the tin in said hole, with a note in it alongside some curios and things. Then I made an appendix in my will asking the whereabouts of this capsule to be passed on to the next generations or owners of the house, should they move away. In the note I ask for the reader (hopefully being a child of mine and thus bound to eternal respect and obedience) to send me a letter from the future and, assuming there are technological advances sufficient to send information through space and time, to drop me an email, letter or retro-video recording or something. You won’t believe it, I hardly could myself, but I found a print-out posted neatly in the gatepost of our house as suggested by me in the note to confound any impostors. This was only a week ago, so I am still reeling! The gatepost is stone, and so clearly (not surprisingly) still there one hundred years hence. I was so astonished by the contents of this letter that I will share it with you verbatim:

Dearest Great Great Great GrandBirther, What surprise and honour I noticed as the recipient of your thoughtful and extremely interesting letter from the past. Gosh, to think of you living here in such different times does stimulate some interesting chemicals in my brain! I was quite motivated to get up and walk around, something which people do less these days. Before I address your list of questions I think I had better draw some clear lines in the sand. These days contact with the past is strictly regulated and I had to go to some lengths to obtain a permit. You can imagine what sorts of chaos could ensue if people went about it willy-nilly. I am allowed to tell you things on a superficial level, such as technology we now have and so on, but I am not allowed to breach any patent laws or copyright laws, even inadvertently. Things have become quite strict in terms of information, it seems to be all anyone cares about any more. Information is the new currency, so you can imagine, sharing the wrong things is a bit like robbing a bank in your era. Consequently you’ll have to forgive me if I am a little vague about certain things! The other thing that I imagine you would be interested in, is the small matter of the great fear of your age Climate Change. You will be very happy to learn that some time in the 2060s there was a turning point. A global cataclysm in the form of a geomagnetic shift. Some scientists had posited that the earth was capable of shifting on its axis, and that such shifts changed the climate significantly but there was no direct experience of such a thing and so most people dismissed it as mere theory. In this decade the world was literally turned upside down. Consequently Braton is now where Austrolia used to be. It is a far warmer place, and everything has grown rather much larger than it used to be. The wildlife, like rabbits, birds and even our pets have adapted very well. Having enlarged their body size by about 300% we now live in a world were rabbits provide a very good feast in the way that the poor Turkey used to at Festival Time. Most people have a cat for bringing in food, but dogs, which I think were more common back then, have been dwindling -probably due to the increased rate of growth of the felines relative to the canines (including foxes and badgers fortunately or we’d all have been eaten by now). The appetites and innate love of hunting of the now big, once little cats meant that they have almost completely cleaned up the docile doggies long before they moved onto the foxes and badger folk who are fairy hunted close to extinction. The cats still think of us as their familiars so we are obliged to comb them and share our homes with them, which, now that they are much bigger than we are is quite a daily effort. Fortunately they are quite clean animals and the reliability of their bringing in game is such that it is worth the trade off. Agriculture as such died out in the 60s. Most people grow their own plants now, even those living in formerly urban areas. The cities are no longer much different to rural areas, since the end of motoring, the concrete connections soon broke down under the siege of engorged grass, dandelions, brambles and thistles - apparently enjoying their new found gigantism. I understand the marsupials that populate Austrolia have inversely proportionately shrunk but most of them already had very thick coats, so the drop in temperatures has left them otherwise unscathed, so we understand. Some scientists think this shift may have been taking place every millennia or so, but that due to the lack of historical or scientific record keeping back in the first millennia (AD) no one in the western world realized what was happening. Clearly pre-industrialization, if you lived in Braton, that Braton was shifting in relation to outer space was of little interest or consequence, the only difference being that you may need a warmer coat or that alternatively you may take to wearing flip-flops on a daily basis. We still have flip-flops by the way. They are just bioadaptable now, they monitor your skeletal and cardio vascular stressors and adapt accordingly using tiny imperceptible physiomagnetic pulses… Never mind. It’s a bit like having a massage all day but reflexology but without you noticing. Those reflexologists were onto a good thing. Sinoment issue footwear comes from China of course, as does nearly everything as the seat of world government is there now too. But we like it. It’s fine.
There was a general shift in the global political power dynamic. I am sure you saw it coming, but the previously so called developing regions or nations as you called them, did develop and continued to do so long after the old and new worlds ceased to check themselves sufficiently. However as I said, the cataclysm thank Jung meant that they veered from their previous course which was heading for total global destruction, to one which has saved us from destroying the planet. Now we rather depend on it in a most direct and collaborative way. The ‘event’ meant that the ever-developing nations were forced to take into account the environmental issues that the developed world had been worrying over for some decades. Previously they had refused to do so citing imperialism as the motivation for the ‘west’ lobbying them to restrict their untrammeled industrialization and widespread pollution of rivers, seas and ozone layer. The realignment of the magnetic force field around the globe meant that anything electrical was immediate rendered permanently obsolete. In a word everything broke. The old way of life was broken and so the previous course of destruction halted. The Chinese had however in certain areas been working on a different kind of technology, one that didn’t rely on electricity at all but rather on plant matter and the energy produced by photosynthesis. The fact that the entire electrical magnetism of the earth was so volatile, post event (and still is) meant that if humans were to survive with any kind of technology more sophisticated than primitive fire-based light, heat or transport this new technology would have to work and on a massive scale and fast. To cut a long history short, these days we use plants to power biodegradable technology that when it is obsolete due to improvements (as things are after 5 years or less) they can be composted and used to grow the next plant cycle to power your new biomatterdevice. Some regions are not so dependent on technology and simply use their innate powers of meta observation and communication, they are necessarily independent and thus non governable though the Sinoment would never admit it. It turns out that the Aboriginal people, the San bushmen, the Amazonian Pygmies (and all other such original peoples) in fact knew exactly when the cataclysm was expected and had already occupied the most sought after caves and highlands in their regions. Consequently where such peoples exist they are pretty much running things in their region now, though apparently under Sinoagreement (a common model), and had been simply waiting their turn. There were one or two hiccups for the techno-dependent regions. We had a few genetically modified disasters for some species, and even lost a handful in the name of collateral damage, but the fact that at least some of the civilization we had before has been rescued from ‘the great erase’ shows that on balance things are not so bad. We of course lost all capacity to meta observe or communicate so were rendered infantile for a few years before some old world survivalists managed comparatively to get things together before the Sinoment representatives made contact and eventually organized ‘the reconfiguration’. There is some continuity. To be honest banks and capitalism were on their way out anyway. Most people were using a system of trade by the mid 21st century but the collapse of the electrical grid worldwide meant that most people had no record of how rich or poor they had been anyway. And equally people had no way of escaping to their second house is Marbaya or even London (save for walking) so we all got used to living like medieval peasants for a time. Quite simply Green Power became more than just a political buzz word! The more knowledge you had of the ecology around you, the more you were able to harness it and develop or recover after the change. That knowledge meant that when the mass production of biocomputers came on issue from the Sinoment, if you knew about the resources to hand, you literally had a function for life. My function is evolution monitor. I record slight deviations in organic species that are non-mobile, so that is all plants and fungus (and some locals too! They need to be fed energy pills and watered, much like plants.) Yes some people have opted for pure information lives, they have underdeveloped bodies and are ‘plugged’ into the central biosystem acting as the eyes and ears of the Sinoment. They don’t need to move around to keep an eye on us, as their senses are well developed in the region of neuro glandular observation (there is a gland in the brain that can see without eyes) this is once they have had the biomatter enhancement devices implanted, of course. It will sound weird to you, but then in 1815 I am sure they never imagined Video-phones. Video-phones sound like so much fun! We don’t have things like that any more. In fact we barely take notice of anything 2 dimensional. Right now, I am using a biotranslator to ‘wire’ you this transmission. It might seem like a letter to you but to my mind it is just a stream of consciousness, the geranium in the corner is powering an ancient computer that still has an Englosh translator. I think in mandarin but you can listen into/read my inner dialogue, notated as I think it. Ah well. I need to go silent now but perhaps we can resume this meeting another time if I manage to save up my Commendations. Information is almost as precious/expensive as plant life these days! And you can imagine how we value water, especially now that it is incredibly hot (compared to your days). I rest my forehead on your hands. Flo. Well there you have it. I am not sure what I can do with this information apart from share it with you. I suppose it makes you appreciate things as they are, for one thing is for certain, it could all change.

Coleshill’s number 1 Indian Restaurant Rajrani and Amantia: Authentic Tapas
OPINION
The Coleshill Post
Emma Stokes
emma.stokes@thecoleshillpost.co.uk FOOD & DRINK
Last month, a horde of Coleshill Post readers dropped emails into my inbox for the chance of winning tickets to Birmingham’s Foodies Festival at Canon Hill Park.
I picked two winners at random and asked them to try as many different types of food as possible on the day. Thank you to everyone who entered and make sure to keep reading for the chance of winning more tickets to upcoming events. This month, I ventured out of the Coleshill area in order to share with you a brand new food experience in the heart of Birmingham City Centre.
Amantia
9-10 Bennetts Hill, Birmingham, B2 5RS www.amantiarestaurant.co.uk Authentic Tapas and Spanish Cuisine are hard to come by especially in the Midlands. Since the opening of a brand new Spanish & Mediterranean restaurant Amantia - a family-run business thriving on the idea of Spanish recipes - it has now put Brum on the map for delivering a unique family-fuelled dining experience. On a recent visit to trial their tasting menu (and being given my very own bloggers table), I noticed the interior wasn’t stereotypically Spanish, what with minimal grey walls, purple furniture and a few canvas’ of Flamenco dancers dotted around the walls. However, the food and quality of service completely makes up for what you would expect from a high-end tapas restaurant. The place is family-orientated and the food strongly represents the owners’ heritage and background. Amantia serves a variety of Mediterranean beef, pork and chicken dishes as well as fish and seafood plates, but the main thrust focuses primary on tapas. On arrival, the manager had kindly prepared a set menu to try. There weren’t as many people in there as expected, especially for a Friday night. However I am certain it will continue to pick up over time. The first dish brought to our table was the Calamares - deep fried battered squid strips with homemade Spanish garlic and olive oil dip. The dish was beautiful executed; a light crispy batter which melted when dipped in the sauce. The squid was tender and succulent. For a dish that would cost just under £7 - you’d expect it to be easily edible. Undoubtedly, the highlight of the evening was the Galician style Octopus, served on a bed of potatoes, drizzled with oil and paprika. I could have eaten a whole board to myself owing to the sharp flavours and crispy tentacles, bearing in mind it’s certainly not a dish for the squeamish. Served alongside were mouth-watering, crunchy salted cod croquettes accompanied with a light dip. The two dishes together were a perfect combination. For sides, the Mediterranean smoked salmon, yoghurt, cucumber, garlic and dill crepes were suggested. The bread which was also served alongside was authentic and homemade, consisting of sweet and sour flavours. I’d definitely encourage you to request some on arrival. The portions are generous, a perfect amount for sharing with your other half, and should be washed down with a refreshing glass of sangria. Amantia sells a selection of ice creams and cakes for dessert, and advertise cheese boards with a sherry tipples for those who are not driving. Overall, I was very impressed with the high-quality service and deliverance of the food. For anyone who hasn’t been, I would advise you to try one of the meat selections for starters, as I have seen customers finish these with a satisfied smile. A cheaper option would be to order the tapas dishes instead of main meals. Tapas starts from around £4.95 per dish and you certainly get what you pay for. Watch out for Amantia, the newest tapas bar which I will expect to go far.
The Rajrani
Exquisite Bengal & Indian Cuisine 102 High Street, Coleshill, Birmingham, B46 3BL Tel: 01675 463777 www.rajrani.co.uk I deserve a slap on the wrist. The amount of times I have driven up and down the local high street over the past couple of years is innumerable. But not once have I set foot in The Rajrani, a Bengal and Indian Cuisine which is rated as the #1 restaurant in Coleshill. Being named as the best restaurant certainly creates high expectations from its customers. However owing to the fact the restaurant has won several Coventry & Warwickshire Food Awards (and was also named as the Best Ethnic Experience in 2005), you know deep down you won’t leave disappointed. I was kindly asked if I would like try their dining experience for myself and I can honestly say that both the food and service were delivered to the highest standard. The staff at The Rajrani helped turn my local visit into a perfect dining experience. The place is very popular and extremely cosy. On arrival, every single table was full of customers ready to tuck into their dishes, even at 8pm on a school night. I just so happened to visit on a Monday which turned out to be ‘Gourmet Night’. The deal consists of any starter, any main, rice and naan, all for just £10.95 per person. Don’t forget that vouchers for this specific deal should be downloaded from their website beforehand. The main dining area is relatively small but filled with just the right amount of tables to avoid overcrowding. The room bursts to life with colour, the walls are painted in seductive red and you will even notice that the radiators are painted in pops of pink. The staff are attentive and on my arrival, the manager Josh promptly showed us to our table where we were offered drinks. You are spoiled for choice as the curry menu explodes with a variety of different options, ranging from House specials to European dishes. The Rajrani even boast its very own ‘Exotic Fish’ menu which is a must try for next time. If like me, you would prefer to nose at the menu before you arrive, the full menu can also be found on their website. If you are stuck on what curry to order, the waiters will happily recommended the top dishes to try. I highly recommend the butter chicken, one of the creamiest and tantalising dishes on the menu. You would also do well to choose any of the options from the ‘Chefs Recommendations’ section. I also taste tested the delicious Chicken Chilli Baharee (green herbs, Tandoori spices, green chillies and Jeera) and it is certainly a dish with a ‘kick’ to it. I advise anyone to look on the walls during your visit where you might even spot posters which advertise the Rajrani BBQ pack. For just £12.95, they sell special cuts of chicken, lamb and shish kebab pieces, just the right amount for two people, which you can take away to cook at home. This would be perfect for a summer lunch in the garden and the deal sounds delightfully tempting. Before leaving, we were offered complimentary drinks from the menu. If you prefer sweet drinks like myself, the Baileys Floater Coffee will top the night off perfectly and you are certainly bound to have the best night’s sleep afterwards. Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with my Rajrani experience. First impressions are everything and it was insightful to see that the staff genuinely love working there and the manager Josh is incredibly attentive. They will truly make you feel welcome during your visit. I will definitely be going back for round two. Have you visited the Rajrani before? Or are you thinking of going after reading this review? BUSINESS
THE Warwickshire Rural Growth Network provides free business support to businesses and individuals looking to start their own business, in rural Warwickshire.
Warwickshire County Council has been selected by DEFRA, as one of five counties in England to run this new pilot business support programme focusing on rural areas. You will be given a dedicated business coach, who will work with you to develop a bespoke action plan, to launch a new business or kick start business growth. You and your business coach will work through your journey, to achieve your goals. To discuss this opportunity further, please do contact us on either 07768 390148 or 07920 563781.
Kristy Poland, owner of “byKristy” met with Rita Booth, business coach of Pera Consulting (UK) Ltd, partner of Warwickshire Rural Growth Network, in October 2014. At that time, Kristy was exploring opportunities to set-up her own business using her skills as a qualified seamstress, to work alongside her busy family life. By the time Rita and Kristy met, Kristy had already identified an opportunity for working with a local dance school, as well as creating her own designs for bridal wear and bespoke corsets. “byKristy” is currently receiving bespoke business support, through a blend of one-to-one coaching and access to business workshop sessions. The business coaching has provided Kristy with confidence in her business concept, as well as developing

IT’S an exciting time for small businesses, with many entrepreneurs leaving behind their boring day job to persue the dream of running their own successful business. With the digital age well and truly upon us a strong online presence is an absolute must – however, it’s not only your services or products that are part of your brand but
so are YOU. A phrase I heard someone say a few years ago stuck in my head and it is one I quote often – “people buy people” and as cheesy as it is, the saying that a picture paints a thousand words is especially true for profile photo’s or business portraits. Take LinkedIn, which is fantastic for anyone wishing to connect with another business and to advertise their services. It’s a professional site which allows you to promote your skills,
Following an initial review of the business concept, Kristy and Rita have worked together to successfully establish “byKristy”. This journey included developing a cash flow forecast to plan the business idea, identifying and designing website content, setting pricing structures, as well as delivery processes when engaging with new contracts. The one-to-one coaching sessions provide Kristy with an opportunity to discuss her ideas and develop next steps in making this business a reality and generating growth. With the professional support and guidance from business coach, Rita Booth, “byKristy” successfully launched in February 2015, by securing its first contract with a local dance school. Kristy is now developing her hand-made bridal gowns, brides maid dresses, corsets and children’s wear, to meet growing demand for her unique designs. Kristy is also developing a dedicated website and social media accounts, such as Facebook and Etsy. There is still much to do, as with any start-up and Kristy is now on her way. Please do contact Warwickshire Rural Growth Network to see how
qualifications and employment history. However, I still get amazed when I see the amount of people with awful and inappropriate profile photographs not to mention those that don’t even HAVE one at all! It’s a fact that you will get 7 times more page views if you have an up-to-date profile photo, a stastistic that is paramount if you are looking for employment or you are selling a professional service. There are many ‘fake’ and spam Social Media profiles that are created purely to collect information and sell sub standard products and with no photo on your profile recruiters will instantly pigeon hole you into this category. Uploading a camera phone selfie that is dark or blurred, a photo of yourself tipsy in a bar on holiday or a photo of your pet cat is not the best way to project a professional image. These kind of images are best kept for your personal Facebook timeline and investing in a professionally captured headshot will provide you with one of the best visual marketing tools out there. It will help people CONNECT with YOU because a professional photograph will convey your personality and bring consistency throughout your whole online profiles including Twitter, Facebook and Google+. When I was booked to photograph local MP’s it was important the Headshots were modern and had great connection. They needed to reflect the core values of the political party and also look great across a plethora of marketing and media platforms. They were used on various leaflets, posters, press campaigns and Social Media sites. The images actually helped to give them a ‘brand’ and they really did stand out from the dated and cheesy ‘white background’ style images that other MP’s in the area were using:
we may help you by either contacting Rita Booth on 07768 390148 or by visiting www.warwickshiregov.uk/ ruralgrowthnetwork . “With Rita’s help and the support of the Warwickshire Rural Growth Network, I am now the owner of my own business, something I was never confident enough to begin on my own. I had often talked of starting up by myself, doing something I have always enjoyed, however, since qualifying in Fashion Design several years ago, my dyslexia and confidence in my own ability had always held me back. Thanks to Rita’s and the RGN’s advice and encouragement, I am now making the costumes for Nikki Kester’s School of Dance show, beginning to set up my website and a social media presence and I have started to take on clothes alterations through word of mouth, most recently a set of bridesmaid’s dresses. Although alterations will continue to form part of my ongoing business, my main focus in the medium term will be on the bespoke corsetry and bridalwear, aswell as girl’s clothing.” Kristy Poland, Owner of byKristy
A Headshot doesn’t have to be boring and choosing a photographer that has a style that fits your brand is very important. When Phil first approached me to take a Headshot of him we chatted in detail about the type of image he wanted and what message he wanted to convey. I always get to know my clients first and part of the consultation process involves discussing clothing choices, how comfortable they feel in front of the camera, how formal or informal they want to be represented. Phil is a talented pen and ink artist and his first specification was that he wanted the image to be in black and white as this fitted with his brand. The image was to be used in his online profiles and also on the ‘About Me’ page of his website. Phil chose me as his photographer after noticing my Editorial style of portraiture: Many people also upload a photo from years ago simply because ‘I had a bit of a tan then’ or ‘I like my smile in that one’ but your business profile should be the most up to date image of yourself, not one from 10 years ago. Going back to my phrase above that ‘”people buy people” a current photograph can be hugely beneficial if you attend business networking events and conferences as people DO recognise you. A professional photograph that conveys approachability, confidence, warmth and likeability is a powerful asset and will most definitely help you to stand above your competitors or attract future employers. When your potential customers or employees see that you have taken the time to invest in a photographer they will take you much more seriously. A ‘wow’ profile photograph will look a billion times more professional than that selfie of you with the girls in Ibiza from 5 years ago.

What is RGN?
byKristy is a new start business established in early 2015 and offers a hand-made clothing service, for people who want luxury, tailor made garments and costumes for dance schools.
business acumen and marketing strategies. The business coaching session has also provided Kristy with an opportunity to discuss her business progress and develop solutions to move forward. The business workshops, funded through Warwickshire Rural Growth Network have provided Kristy with an opportunity to develop her understanding of digital marketing and in particular social media marketing. This workshop programme has offered Kristy an opportunity to meet with like-minded entrepreneurs from her local area and has provided an opportunity to network and build lasting relationships with potential clients and peers alike. Kristy and Rita discussed the business concept, as well as how to set up a small business including legal requirements. Together Kristy and Rita have developed the services offered and explored potential ways in which Kristy may promote her activities across the local community and beyond. It was clear that this business needed a flexible approach, to satisfy the various target client-groups, as well as personal needs to manage family life.

NETWORK Old Saltleians Host Business46 Speed Networking
The Love Coleshill consortium hosted a Business46 evening event on Thursday 21st May, at the picturesque Grimstock Hotel in the spirit of linking businesses and promoting local loyalty.
Around 30 local businesses attended the event. The morning had a great buzz, with lots of pro-active networking and everyone built business links within the local area. Attendees also had a tour of the impressive rugby club and its facilities. The speaker for the morning was Ruth Waring, Managing Director of consultancy firm Labyrinth Logistics and founder of Women in Logistics UK. As a highly successful business woman who built much her business through networking, Ruth appreciates the importance of skilled networking. Ruth explained why networking in the right way is so important
On Wednesday 13th May Old Saltleians Rugby Club hosted a highly successful speed networking breakfast organised by Business46.
The organisers decided to hold a joint event because of their shared passion for local business. Love Coleshill focuses on supporting local retail and consumer orientated businesses. They work hard to promote local loyalty with events supporting businesses on Coleshill High Street and in the surrounding area. Business46 provides networking opportunities for local businesses who generally offer services to other businesses. They’ve established a professional business networking group which organises monthly events where local businesses attend and build productive trading relationships. The evening proved a great success and provided advice and assistance on gaining free business support in the local area. Rachael Delich, Account Manager from Coventry and Warwickshire Growth Hub explained the financial and other support available to businesses to encourage growth, innovation and diversification. Attendees were able to network and extend their connections and business reach by meeting likeminded individuals in the local area. Both Buisiness46 and Love Coleshill were pleased with the event feedback. To find out more about Love Coleshill please contact marie@the-marketeer.co.uk or call Marie on 07985 724842. To learn more about Business46 and their monthly events email info@business46.co.uk, call 01675 434583, tweet @business_46 or visit www.business46.co.uk.
Promoting Workplace Wellbeing Over 30 local business leaders attended the event and were highly impressed by both the stunning new facilities and professionalism of the Leisure
Centre employees. The topic was ‘Workplace Wellbeing’, presented by Jodi Kirkham from the Leisure Centre management team. Attendees learnt about the detrimental impact of poor heath in the workplace and the statistics indicating the financial reality upon businesses.
Government figures estimate around 500,000 employees are off work sick every day, costing UK business £100bn-a-year. Clearly the health and well-being of employees is important to local employers and those who attended learnt how simple techniques can reduce absenteeism. One of the more unusual fitness techniques rec-
and that first impressions really do count. Attendees learnt how to create their perfect ‘elevator pitch’ and that 2 minutes is all it takes to convey who you are, what you do and the business leads you want. The group then had an intense speed networking session which gave the room a highly charged atmosphere with lots of business cards being exchanged. The event was a great hit and the Business46 organisers were inundated with requests for another speed networking session later in the year. Additionally, the Old Salts Rugby Club provided a wonderful location and they showcased their excellent facilities and catering. Malcom, Peter and Colin from the club highlighted their various plans for the Rugby World Cup and other community events, to find out more about the club please visit www.oldsaltleians. com. The next Business46 event is Wednesday 10th June, 7.30am at the Norton and the topic is Finance 4 Business presented by Keith Leighton. If you own or work in a business linked to the B46 postcode, why not come to the event? Speakers and locations vary, ensuring there is always something relevant to attendees. Everyone is guaranteed a warm and friendly welcome. To join our growing database please get in touch by emailing info@business46.co.uk, call 01675 434583, tweet @business_46 or alternatively find information on www.business46. co.uk.
ommended was hula hooping which was presented by John Parnell (www.hoop-guy.com). John’s entertaining demonstration and request for willing volunteers, resulted in many successful (and some not quite so successful) new hula hoop fans. Contact Business46 now to book or to find out more about the business network by emailinginfo@business46.co.uk. Events are priced at £15 for non-members and £7.50 for members. ‘These tough Brummie lasses make BoxNation Proud’
The Coleshill Post
This is the official quote Box Nation has given Birmingham’s brand new female boxing club, the W.B.C Women’s Boxing Club.
Frank Warrens Box Nation ran an internet poll to find the best boxing gyms people have on offer. After a deadline date, members of Box Nation team awarded Birmingham’s brand new ‘Women’s Boxing Club’ the accolade of a joint 1st place concluding they could not split the final 2 gyms up they had decided on. So because it was a hard decision to make, they awarded the W.B.C & the Lions boxing & fitness gym in Chelmsford joint winners. The W.B.C Women’s boxing club told us, ‘We are so happy to win this, we are over the moon’. Not only did we get first place we was also given VIP tickets to attend the championship Boxing event at Wembley. A coach load representing the gym had a great evening courtesy of Box Nation. We had a first-hand look on how the pros do it in boxing and watching the likes of Bradley Skeete and Frank Buglioni fighting for The WBO European Super-Middleweight championship. The gym sessions only started in November last year and it has grown more & more large every month. We are linked with Sport England & This Girl Can, Also we are aiming to get females boxing with England Boxing & also the Malta Boxing Commission, which we
have seen our first boxer get licensed for us. Women have when it comes to boxing always got a bad deal. Is wasn’t until the last Olympics that people started to sit up and take notice of how things are changing for young women in sport. WBC don’t dictate the sessions, the ladies who are on the classes have a say so as to what can and cannot happen and so far things have taken a sweet road, and the road looks to be eventful. Tom Ross from Free Radio has given some radio time to helping the gym and Danny Kelly at Radio WM has also done the same. The Birmingham Evening Mail came to our session recently to cover the way we do things at our base in Bissell Street, Digbeth/ Highgate. We have just started a web site and it has already past 4500 hits in 7 weeks. Any women wishing to box or just train the same way boxers do, should go to www.womensboxingclub.com first and take a look at what we have to offer. Classed are Monday & Wednesday at 19.00 and Saturday mornings at 11am. We also offer all your boxing needs with boxing equipment. Don’t pay massive prices in stores when we sell everything from hand wraps and gum shields to Head Guards to Gloves. All your needs to progress you fitness and boxing training can be suited to get you where you want to be. Visit www.womensboxingclub.com
Nigel Benn Gives Midlands Fans a Great Night Nigel Benn, the former World Super-Middleweight Boxing Champion flew in from Australia recently to speak to loyal fans in the Midlands about how he loved the sport of boxing and hated the politics that ruin it.
The legendary out spoken Londoner aka The Dark Destroyer’ gave a fantastic account of his life in the streets of London, growing up as a tear away and then joining the British army. He was candid about his amateur boxing and how he won 41 fights with only 4 losses. When he realised he could fight and get paid for it, he decided to turn professional in 1987 and winning his first fight in the second round. He had 22 straight wins as a pro and all of them by stoppage. However his 23rd fight was against Michael Watson. Watson went on to stop Benn in 6 rounds. The Following year he was beat by Eubanks at Birmingham’s NEC, his second loss Between him and Watson Nigel had 5 fights winning them all, however Chris stopped the fight in 9, making Benn the angriest man in the World. When he got the chance to fight Chris again in 1993, it went all the way and declared a draw. He never did get a chance to fight Eubanks again. However he did end up fighting Gerald McClellan in 1995 and we all know the outcome of that sad ending to such a powerful fighter. Remember 4 years before Chris fought Watson and after that fight Eubanks was never the same boxer. When Benn fought Gerald, you could see the difference in his later fights. However that’s boxing and all
who enter know the possible dangers that lurked around the corners from being hit in the right place but at the wrong time, so to speak. He finished his days in boxing with 2 big matches against Irelands very own Steve Collins. Nothing that could go right for Benn, ever went right for him. Both fights saw him retire, 1st fight in the 4th and the 2nd in the 6th. In his time he won the Commonwealth Middleweight title, WBC middleweight and the WBC Super middleweight. He did go for the WBO Super middleweight but this was owned by Steve Collins. The event was held at Cannock’s No1 sports bar at the Premier Suit and at least 200 people attended this great night. Everybody had a chance to meet Benn and speak with him, have a photo taken and get the odd item signed for keeps sake. Living now at the other end of this world will see this boxing British icon visit less and less over the years. Scott Murray holds these fantastic nights and for me it’s a must never to miss. He has held a constant 100% with me over the years and the next few months will see him keeping that status. He has the currant reigning super middleweight champion of the world Carl ‘THE COBRA’ Froch here on June 18th where Carl has agreed to say who he is fighting next and will he retire after that. Bar Sports will also see ROY JONES JNR there later this year also. 2 more shows for you not to miss as Jones Jnr pops here every odd year. Ticket hotline for these shows are 01543 572092. Bronze for Carl Froch is £55.00 silver is £75.00 and Gold is £150.00. Full details can be obtained info@premier-suite.co.uk or at www.premier-suite. co.uk
Bruno looks in the best of shape for years
The former World Heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno was in the region a couple of weeks back, and he is looking back on top form.
The most famous house hold name in the British Heavyweight ladder for decades looked and sounded very positive and strong despite the setbacks he had with his marriage break up and also his publicised breakdown a few years back. Frank had a bounce in his step, he looked at people with valour and greeted them like they was some was his closest friends. Over the years I have been in Franks Company while working for the Harp newspaper, some have been times I wish I was never there to see him. At times he looked like he wanted to be anywhere but there. Once while attending an event with him and Mike Tyson, Bruno fell asleep at the top table. This was when he was in a bad place after his marriage breakup and also his televised mental break down which saw him sectioned by his close family. When I walked into the Village urban resort hotel I wasn’t met with any of that past history. Instead Frank looked very dapper, glowing like a new car in the showroom. He was different than before, when we met he instantly said hello, how is the writing going. He remembered I wrote for the sport and that made me happy to see he was definitely on the mend. He did however look really thin, looked like he had lost 3 to 5 stone in weight. No big chest and massive frame no more. He was slim and walking tall and proud. This looked great for the first event by its promoters DKA PROMOTIONS. Daz Ashmore contacted me at this paper and we was more than happy to be involved. I watch Daz work the reception area of fight fans and boxing nuts, so to speak. He made all meet Big Frank and made sure everyone was happy. The night went ahead with a 3 course meal, then an auction of sports items.
Former Boxing champions such as Dublin’s Joe Egan were there. Joe is a long standing friend of Franks. Also was 2 x Midlands Cruiserweight Champion Nigel Rafferty. Alongside these tough boxing legends was Kick-Boxing ace Kash ‘the flash Gill. Birmingham based Kash became World champion at the young age of only 21. He was WKA World champion at Light middleweight and also at Super Middle. In total he was 4 times world kick boxing champion. Frank was very candid about his life in boxing and was amazed how the public warmed to him. He loved boxing and hated hearing other fighters from the same camp now talk bad of Terry Lawless, Frank’s old trainer and manager. Frank had over 20 wins before his first loss in pro boxing. He fought Tyson 2 times and also Lennox Lewis. Winning his world title against Oliver McCall was the greatest moment and one he said he will never forget. He told everyone Depression was like a cancer. He struggle every day and some days he didn’t want to live. He spent times on the sofa and in bed in self harrow. However being a champion isn’t about giving up when the chips are down. It’s about getting the punch on the chin and getting back up. Whatever happened over the years to Frank, he has never spat his gum shield out like a child with a dummy. He has cried himself to sleep and woke up the next day to do the same. He has given himself torment and a padded room for thoughts at times. Now he is looking to each day as it passes. He enjoys the look of life and the happiness it offers. His children now start to understand what went on and offer him great support and a helping hand when he gets to each corner. Seeing him getting better and stronger is great. DKA held a fantastic event in Walsall and deserve very high marks for their great event. Cannot wait to see who they bring next.

BY NIGEL PEET Coleshill Town Reserves, in their first season, have had a great season.
First and foremost the players have provided tremendous support for the 1st team as and when required, epitomising the role of a reserve team. The team itself, has performed outstandingly in their own Reserve League, finishing in Runners-Up position, losing only 3 league games all season. The League trophy was presented at the final League game of the season, which, incidentally, Coleshill won 7-0. Coleshill Town Reserves, also entered the Fazeley Cup and progressed to the final, where they played against Bolehall Swifts on Good Friday. Boleshall, who, at the time, were flying high, in 3rd place in Midland Football League Div 1, fielded a full strength side. However, Coleshill Town matched them for 90 minutes, with the score ending 2-2. Extra time was played and just when it looked like Coleshill would take their opponents to a penalty shoot-out. A last gasp winner for Bolehall meant they took the accolade of winners. But Coleshill Town Reserves can be tremendously proud of their performance against the higher league opposition. As well as League and Cup runners-up, the Reserves also won 3 League “Team of the month” awards for their performances at stages throughout the season.Congratulations to Reserve Team management and players. Coleshill Town Ladies, who were playing their first season in open age football, have progressed from U18 junior football. The team is still young in both age and experience so Manager Andy Smith was unsure how the season would pan out against more experience open age sides. However, Coleshill Ladies, playing in Div 2of the B’ham Womens League, soon dispelled any fears for the season. The Ladies completed the season losing only 2 league games (both to title winners Wednesfield Ladies), meaning they finished the season as League runners-up, collecting the silverware and promotion to Division 1. The Ladies also caused Cup upsets by beating higher league opposition which bodes well for the coming season against stronger sides. Coleshill Town FC ran 2 Under 18 Teams last season. The Under 18 Team playing in the Tamworth Junior League, finished a creditable 3rd in the League but saved one of their best performances for the League’s Major Cup final against St Johns. A strong first half attacking display saw them go into half time leading 2-0. The expected onslaught, from a strong St Johns team, in the second, meant Coleshill U18 defence had to soak up tremendous pressure. But St Johns could only breach that defence once, meaning Coleshill Town U18’s became the Tamworth Junior League Major Cup Winners, by a mar-

gin of 2-1 Coleshill Town U18, the other team, that plays in the Midland Junior Premier League, finished 11th in a league of 33 team. As per their counterparts saved their best football for the cup clashes. However the League cup run was ended at semi final stage by a very strong Stratford Town side, who ended as League and Cup double winners Coleshill Town U16’s suffered a completely disjointed season due to Central Warwick League issues beyond the club and League control. Teams within the U16 division folded at various stages throughout the season meaning records were expunged and a meaningful league table was almost impossible and hardly any football was played . This proved a very frustrating season for management and players. On a bright note those same players and Management will be representing Coleshill Town FC next season as the club re-enters the Midland Junior Floodlit League Coleshill Town U14’s had a difficult season in Central Warwick Premier Division. The team had lost players from the previous season so the season was a struggle against some very good sides in the division. But, having said that, the Management and players battled on to the end of the season, fulfilling all fixtures regardless of results. This is something that should be applauded. It is all so easy to pull the plug when a team struggles and it ends in a situation like the Under 16’s experienced. Lets look forward to a better season next year. Coleshill Town U13’s finished the season as Central Warwick Premier League runners- up. Having run first or second all season with Northfield Town, the league title was decided by the results when the 2 teams met in their fixtures. Northfield had the upper hand and took the title. However Coleshill U13’s gained revenge by beating Northfield town 3-2 in the final of the League open Cup to take the silverware home. Coleshill Town U7’s and U8’s have both completed their first season in the Central Warwick League. Whilst their games are “non competitive” and no results recorded, both teams have had an impressive first season. The teams will continue building and improving throughout the summer break in readiness for next season So the curtain comes down on what has been a tremendous season for Coleshill town football Club. Lets hope it gets even better next year. Any players interested in joining Coleshill Town teams next year please contact email coleshilltownfc@gmail. com for information Anyone interested in sponsorship details or with helping out at any level of the club please contact email coleshilltownfc@gmail.com As the new season starts, keep up to date with all the clubs information at website www.pitchero.com/clubs/ coleshilltown/

Congratulations to Old Salts RFC combined under 11s/12s. The team made their way over to Old Yardleians in Solihull to take part in their end of season tournament and came away as “Winners!” They secured a 25-15 victory in the final against Earlsdon. Yet again the players turned in a fine “team” performance team which is proving to be one of their biggest strengths as well as support play. The team also played Coalville the previous week and ran in a total of 18 tries to run out 90-30 winners. The two latest successes stand the team in a great position as they head off to Minehead to take part in the “Leics Tigers Challenge.” The team has been busy raising funds since November. They wish to offer thanks to local people who attended the nights to support the events. Local businesses also made donations to their raffle. The players wish to thank the owners of The Rajrani, Water Orton Fish and Chip
Shop, Bumbles, Sweet Things of Coleshill, Chalk and Linen, International Forwarding Ltd and Morrisons. Newly arrived WASPS RFC also offered support to the raffle which again is appreciated. Thanks to all supporters and parents too which has seen the team finish their season off with only 2 defeats playing as a combined team, one of which was the first game of the season way back in October. A total of 16 different players have ran in tries throughout the season which is perhaps testament to the fact that the players are really understanding the meaning of a team game! The coaching staff comprising of Mick Griffin, Sean Rogan, Stuart Mace and Jason Saunders wish to thank and congratulate each of the players for their commitment and all round effort too. They are 4 extremely proud coaches and the victory at Old Yards and season as a whole has brought smiles all round! They all look forward to a bigger challenge that now awaits in Minehead
