Memorial Park plan gets go ahead again! Cllr Adam Farrell

Coleshill North Town & Borough Councillor

REGULAR COLUMN

OVER the past three years I have fought hard to ensure Coleshill Memorial Park gets the investment it needs. The park is a great asset in our town and was entrusted to the Town Council after WW2 to be a place of sports and recreation. We need to ensure its future.

Over previous decades the park hasn’t had the investment it deserved and had started to look tired. In 2013 the Town Council renovated the children’s play area but, before further money was spent on the park, the Council took the view that we needed a bigger plan. We needed a master plan to improve the whole of Coleshill Memorial Park so that we achieved a value for money project that provided Coleshill residents with top class facilities. As a Council we appointed Moore Environment, a local landscape architect firm, to carry out a consultation, surveys, a funding study and a master plan. Nearly 18 months on we

have that master plan. We have the funding for phase one from Town Council reserves, the Borough Council has committed funds and a plan to raise external funding has been developed. The past 18 months have involved an awful lot of hard work and determination. At the recent Full Council meeting, this new Council had the opportunity to raise questions and make comments on the plan approved in March. Many expected the meeting to be a heated affair after an election campaign that saw the plan derided as a ‘Labour vanity project’. Such accusations led me to think that the local Conservative Party had information so serious, so important, that we should listen to what they had to say. Unfortunately the observations of local Conservative Councillors were not as insightful as the election literature suggested. In fact, as I write this column, I’m struggling to remember anything from the meeting that suggested that Councillors around the table had any majorly different views on the project. It is now clear to me that the Conservative party literature used the large sums of money involved in the project as a whole to try and scaremonger local residents into believing their council tax was being wasted. Isn’t it strange how the views of some appear to suddenly change after an election? The only difference between the two main parties, as I see it, has been that Labour Councillors have worked hard over the last three years to develop a positive plan for the future. Conservative Councillors and candidates have spent three years cynically peddling half-truths about the project for their own electoral advantage. I’m glad that the recent meeting has confirmed the Conservatives now fully support the plan to improve the Memorial Park. Actions of course speak louder than words so I look forward to working with all Councillors to implement the project over the years to come.

Calling Councillors! The Coleshill Post is keen to give all of our local representatives, regardless of party affiliation, a regular column within the newspaper and online to help better inform our readers. Please email editor@thecoleshillpost.co.uk if you would like to get involved.

WWI Vigils

www.coleshillremembers.co.uk

Latest vigil held for Rifleman John Townsend AS part of the ongoing series of vigils held for Coleshill’s fallen soldiers during World War One, ex Royal Navy Officer Simon Toon read excerpts from documents relating to Rifleman John Townsend 1894-1915 including some of his own personal letters.

John’s niece and four great nieces were present and laid a wreath after witnessing an emotional reading which, as with all previous vigils, was finished with 100 chimes of a halfmuffled bell at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Church Hill. JOHN TOWNSEND (JACK) was born at Bacons End near Coleshill on 6th December 1894, and Baptised at Coleshill Parish Church on 30th December of that year. He was the third son of Thomas Townsend and Caroline (Nee Sharrard). He attached Coleshill Parochial School (in Back Lane) and in 1911 was working as a shop assistant in the town. He enlisted into the 5th Battalion Kings Royal Corps (Service No. R/11456) on 6th April 1915 in Birmingham, but was eventually posted to the 7th Battalion on his arrival in France on 20th July 1915. Just ten

days later, on 30th July, he was very seriously injured at Hooge near Ypres, Belgium. He was eventually transferred to a hospital in France where he died of his wounds on 2nd September 1915 and was buried at Etaples Military Cemetery near Boulogne. On 18th September 1915 The Coleshill Chronicle wrote: “DIED FROM WOUNDS News has been received by Mr and Mrs Townsend, Packington Lane, Coleshill, of the death of their son, Rifleman J Townsend, Kings Royal Rifles, who was wounded in the Battle of Hooge on July 29th. He died from the wounds on September 2nd. He was 20 years of age.</ blockquote> The next vigil will be held at Coleshill War Memorial, Church Hill, 27th September at 8pm marking the 100th anniversary of the death of Private Edwin G Malin.” If you would like more information on upcoming vigils and events related to Coleshill Remembers you can download the mobile phone app for iPhone and Android.

ON 23rd September Coleshill's Town Mayor, Councillor Kirsteen Wootton, announced the appointment of the Town's first Sergeant At Arms. Councillor Wooton told us: “I’m pleased to announce that I’ve appointed Coleshill’s first ever Sergeant-at-Arms, Simon Toon. Traditionally the role involves acting as the mayor’s bodyguard. However given the lack of threats to my person, my sergeant will support me in coordinating civ-

ic functions and will promote the heritage of the town. I should like to thank Simon for agreeing to undertake this unpaid, voluntary role.” Simon commented about his new role "I am honoured to have been invited to take on this new role. I look forward to supporting our Mayor and Town Council and promoting the town's heritage and history. And to be the first holder of this post I hope it can be made a continuing role to the benefit the whole of Coleshill."

The app was supposed to be delivered by local businessman Mark Jones, who is himself a Tory councillor on North Warwickshire Borough Council. Twice upon a time in Coleshill By Mike Walpole Local Writer

ABOVE: The vast mechanical workings of St Peter and St Paul’s clock compared with the modern digital version recently installed at St Theresa’s on Coventry Road (Below). Pictured here with Fr Kevin Kavanagh, Sue Wallace and Barry Gascoigne.

ONCE upon a time church clocks were wound by hand, which guaranteed that whatever the weather they would continue to tell the time.

At the Anglican church the the turret clock made by William Leeson in 1860 was wound twice a week until it was converted to electrical winding in August 2003. The weights and steel rope of the winding mechanism were removed, so when a recent thunder storm knocked out the charger which keeps a 12v battery powering the clock fully charged, the clock wound down and

stopped. A new charger, a couple of hours work by a ringer, and the clock was soon back on line again. At the other end of town, Sacred Heart and Saint Teresa’s clock has also been in trouble. The original church clock was irreparable, so the movement was replaced by Smith’s of Derby using the original hands. St Teresa’s clock is fully automated, which means it resets itself for summer and winter time. At St Peter and St Paul’s, the pendulum has to be stopped by a bell ringer in Spring to lose the hour, or the clock wound on an hour in Autumn, using the wheel on the far left. And then the striking mechanism has to be checked to show it will strike the right hour.

Charity Ch Local www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk FATHER Hudson’s Care has opened ten apartments in Coleshill, North Warwickshire, offering supported living opportunities to vulnerable adults who wish to live more independently and who may need assistance to do so.

Named Vincent House, the new development has been designed to enable adults with learning disabilities and other needs to gain independence, while receiving care and support in a way that suits them. Each apartment has an open plan lounge and kitchen/dining area and comes unfurnished, allowing residents to personalise their new home. All ground floor apartments are equipped with a wet room, making them ideal for people with mobility needs. There is a mix of one- and two-bedroomed apartments available, with the two-bedroomed apartments offering an excellent opportunity for two people to share or to provide a room for a night time carer. Vincent House is an exciting new venture for Father Hudson’s Care, opening at a time when social care moves towards a personalised approach to care provision. Personalisation puts the individual at the heart of their care by giving them choice and control over how this is provided to them and enabling them to create their own sense of independence and dignity. The apartments are located within walking distance of Coleshill high street, with access to shops, cafés,

banks and other amenities. Residents can also try activities such as attending sporting events, taking a course, attending a nearby day centre or undertaking voluntary work. Interest has already been shown in the apartments by several current tenants of Father Hudson’s domiciliary care and other local people. Applications for the remaining apartments are welcomed from people within North Warwickshire and further afield, and from within the Catholic and wider communities in the hope that they will help make a difference to the lives of vulnerable adults from a wide range of backgrounds. Despite the promise of independence, the decision to move to supported living is not an easy one to make and tenants may be apprehensive about not just moving to a new home, but how they will manage in their new environment. Father Hudson’s Care can help to ease this transition by providing one-to-one support to residents who request it, for as many hours as they need. Support could include personal care, daily living tasks in the home, socialisation and more, depending on the requirements of the individual; we will discuss with each person how their needs are best met. Support is offered on a not-for-profit basis and will need to be funded by the local authority, by the individual themselves or through Direct Payments. The rental cost will usually be covered by housing benefit, if applicable. To find out more about Vincent House please contact Graeme Riley, Head of Adult Care, on 01675 434003. Talk about WWI Messines Village Terrain Model & District U3A U3 Coleshill www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk WE welcomed Lee Dent to our monthly meeting who told us about finding the Messines Village Terrain Model on Cannock Chase.

Lee and his friend Richard Pursehouse found fragments of a model buried under topsoil at a disused army barracks site near Brocton on Cannock Chase, and the adventure began. During the first World War communication was extremely difficult and if, during battle, the officers who had been briefed were killed the remaining soldiers were left in disarray. It took until 1917 for the powers to be to understand that all of the men on the ground needed to know what was expected of them. With this in mind it was decided to build a 'terrain model' of the village of Messines in Belgium, which was captured in June 1917 . Covering about thirty five square metres, the model was constructed by troops of the New Zealand Brigade at Brocton Camp on Cannock Chase and completed in May

1918. It was used to train soldiers in topography [map reading]. Soldiers of all levels circled the model and were given the opportunity to express their views on the method of attack. Following intensive planning each and every soldier knew details of the area and when and where they needed to be and do. The area was bombarded by an artillery attack with the New Zealand Brigade soldiers following up, and the counter attack on

Messines Village was a complete success. In autumn 2007 a section of the cement and mortar model was discovered by The Chase Project Military Research Group, and following one or two battles with the authorities the site was the subject of a community archaeological dig. The site was recorded, photos and measurements taken and eventually covered over to preserve it for future generations. Thank you Lee for a very informative talk. If you should want to learn more about this project please go to their web site 'thechaseproject@gmail'. Should you be retired or semi retired and would like to meet like minded people, please visit us at our next general meeting which is on 19th October, when our talk will be about 'Thirty Years on the Rostrum'. Water Orton Churches Together celebrate One World Week CHURCHES will be celebrating One World Week from 18th – 25th October this year the theme is Hope in Action explained as inspiring a culture of hope to build a more equal and cultured world.

WATER ORTON CHURCHES TOGETHER had to bring the event forward due to one of the organisers being unavailable in October. On Tuesday 22nd September Water Orton Methodist Church Centre and St Peter & St Paul’s Church, Water Orton hosted Shari Brown a Project Co-ordinator from RESTORE an organisation which supports refugees therefore supporting lives. Having been born in South Africa Shari was, interestingly, present at President Mandela’s inauguration. She spoke under the banner of “Welcoming the Stranger”. This was particularly pertinent in the light of the current situation within the world of many people leaving their native country, mainly in fear, but for various reasons. We were surprised about many facts put before us but in particular the countries which hosted most refugees in 2014 were Turkey, Pakistan and the Lebanon and we noted that the largest numbers of refugees coming to the U.K. were from Eritrea, Pakistan, Syria and Iran! We are all called to be befrienders and RESTORE who are based in Gt Hampton Street, Newtown, Birmingham B19 3JG would be glad of our prayerful and financial support, but in particular our offers of one to one friendship (or a room in our homes) to a “stranger” who would soon become a friend. Thank you to Gill Day and Margaret Smith the “movers and shakers” from the Methodist Church for all the organisation and the special soups – have you ever tried Turkish Lentil Soup? They are pictured from the left in the photograph with Shari Brown on the right.

Coleshillians come together to create a Soap Box Race legend Local lads join forces with Coleshill firms and became real contenders in the Red Bull Soap Box Race 2015 IT’S 1921 and Red Bull has been outlawed in the city of London. Red Bull Soap Box Race onlookers were about to witness two halfwit bootleggers try and defy the odds as they attempt to bring back Red Bull to the people.

But first they must go head to head with London’s so called finest lawmen. With slapstick comedy, mishaps and pure stupidity, onlookers of all ages were crying with laughter as the worst bootleggers in history tried to evade the law! This was the set up for team Kart Kapone, which consisted of Coleshill local lads John Jones, Adam Turrell, John Sweeney and Robert Sweeney in the Red Bull Soap Box Race at Alexandra Place in London. Red Bull Soap Box Race is an international event in which amateur drivers race homemade soapbox vehicles. The unique non-motorised racing event challenges both experienced racers and amateurs alike to design and build outrageous soapbox machines and compete against the clock in a downhill race. Amongst 1200 entrants, Kart Kapone were short listed amongst 70 others,

which consisted of corporate and public teams, who were to take part in the race. With just 8 weeks given to design and build their racecar, time was definitely not on their side, but with the help of local Coleshill businesses Central Wheel, Foam Tech and Vintage Years, their dream became reality. On race day, Kart Kapone came 7th out of 70 teams, just seconds behind race winners Absolute Radio. We would like to congratulate Coleshill team Kart Kapone on their amazing result and a big thank you to local Coleshill businesses in making this possible.

With our harvest nearly in, reflect on how fortunate we are to have food readily available. For women like Tomey in Mali, the reality is much different. She and her family live in one of the driest places on earth, the Dogon Plateau. Rain is scarce and droughts are becoming more frequent. Life there has never been easy, but with a changing climate, families face an ever more bitter battle for survival. Your cash is providing seeds, tools and training to help women

in Tomey’s community to grow market gardens. Unlike traditional crops, these gardens are irrigated and do not rely on rain. They give women a chance to grow plentiful food to last through the leaner seasons. By selling surplus crops from the market garden, Tomey could save money for the first time in her life. When her grandson fell ill with malaria, she was able to buy the vital medicine he needed to recover. Christian Aid (www.christianaid.org.uk) says: “This project is about more than seeds and tools; it’s about giving families the strength not just to survive, but to thrive. This work is life-saving and only possible with help of generous supporters.”

A HYMN written in Coleshill more than 100 years ago and then forgotten has been sung again in the town.

Sweet Hour of Prayer was sung by a choir and congregation at a service at the United Church on Coventry Road in August. The words to the hymn were said to be written by a blind preacher William Walford. When the Rev Thomas Salmon, an American pastor serving at the then Congregational church, visited him he had just completed a poem on prayer in his mind and asked the Rev Salmon to set it down on paper. The church is now the Spice Lounge, next to the Bell. On his return to New York the Rev Salmon submitted the words to the New York Observer with a covering note explaining how he got it. He said: “During my residence at Coleshill, Warwickshire, England I became acquainted with W W Walford, the blind preacher, a man of obscure birth and connections and no education, but of strong mind and most retentive memory. “In the pulpit to never failed to select a lesson well adapted to his subject, giving chapter and verse with unerring precision, and scarcely ever misplacing a word in his repetition of the psalms, every part of the new Testament, the prophecies, and some of the histories, so as to have the reputation of knowing the whole Bible by heart.” Despite great efforts to trace him or his descendants, no one has been able to find out any more about him. Rev Salmon asked the Observer to publish the words “if you think them worthy of preservation.” The newspaper carried them in their September 13, 1845 issue. About 15 years later William Batchelder Bradbury, a composer from New York wrote the tune that is usually associated with this song. The words to Sweet Hour of Prayer is number 496 in the Methodist hymnal. Youtube has several clips of it.

God had it figured out for Rev Becky

www.shustokecofeprimary.co.uk

Open Day - Wednesday 7th October Please come and visit our caring and creative school between the following times: 9:30-11:30am 1:30-3:00pm. “The teachers are particularly adept at providing pupils with lessons designed to capture their imaginations...” (Ofsted)

“...excellent social skills are evident in children’s ability to work readily with others” (Ofsted)

“The school is at the heart of it’s community...” (Ofsted)

By Mike Walpole Local Writer

MATHS teacher Becky Stephens put her career on hold when she had children.

But when they started school and she started looking for teaching jobs she found God had other plans for her. Rev Becky was ordained priest by the Bishop of Birmingham in July, and has joined the ranks of other female priests at Coleshill, some of whom have gone on to be vicars of their own parishes, and, in

one case, a Canon of Leicester cathedral. Becky says her heart wasn’t in it when she began looking at teaching jobs. “I went to see my vicar to tell him I thought God was calling me to be ordained and went on to read almost the entirety of his bookshelf and spent many hours with some incredibly wise priests. “To be a wife, mum and a deacon are amazing vocations. I can’t describe what it means to be a priest.” Many of the Coleshill congregation went to St Martin’s in the bullring to see her priested by the Bishop of Birmingham.

“Pupils make good progress because they are taught well and benefit fron a well planned curriculum...” (Ofsted)

“...outstanding behaviour contributes strongly to the culture for learning that is a feature of all classes” (Ofsted)

PARISH CLERK

The Coleshill Post

Welcome to the September edition of ‘The Villager’ SUMMER has been and gone. Autumn is here and the football season has started.

The Pavilion is now well used by the local community (see article elsewhere for hire details and the local club contacts). Thank you to Nathan Smith who continues to provide excellent Caretaking Services for Pavilion. Many thanks to John Warren who represents the Parish Council on HS2 matters and is working tirelessly along with local groups to mitigate the impact on the Village. Parish Councillor, Peter Everitt has retired after many years serving on the council. I wish to express my thanks to him for the hard work he has put in on your behalf and of the Parish Council over the years. Pete worked on many projects over the years to improve the Village facilities. He will be missed. Colin Brookes our grounds man has been doing a fantastic job keeping on top of the many items that need looking after around the Village. Colin maintains and marks out the football pitch. He also keeps the open spaces clean and tidy. Thank you to Orchard Nurseries, Birmingham Road who sponsor the planters in the Village all year round. The general appearance and cleanliness of the Village is down to the army of volunteers who patrol the village litter picking. I would like to thank them once again for their time. There are two vacancies on the Parish Council (see separate notice). If any of you are interested in becoming Parish Councillors please contact either the Parish Clerk or any of the existing Parish Councillors who will be only too willing to answer any questions you may have about becoming a Parish Councillor. This can be a very rewarding role in Village life. This publication is only as good as the articles in it, if in the future you want to tell people something or mention a good deed done for the community in the Village please contact me and we will try to include it in future publications. Best wishes Jacquie Coombes, Clerk to the Parish Council, 22 Hargrave Close, Water Orton, B46 1QR, North Warwickshire. clerk@wopc.org.uk GROUNDSMAN

Autumn is upon us THE months soon come around Autumn already, soon be time to put Autumn feed on the football pitch.

Talking of the pitch we finally manged to get the old goal post sleeves out and now have sleeves with locking caps. The new sleeves should be a lot safer for children and dogs. There seems to be there the old problem of people not cleaning up after their dogs, perhaps the only way to solve this problem is fine the culprits and then name and shame them. The two parks have had a lot of litter in them this summer, usually older childrenof an evening being the offenders. I would like to end by once again thanking the many people who help out litter picking, it makes a tremendous difference in the village. If there is anyone out there who would like a litter picker, even to just to pick up the litter dropped by your house it all helps, let me know. All the best, Groundsman. COUNCILLORS

An inspiring area to live As the nights draw in, summer a distant memory, a relaxing walk through the village as the sun sets can give a lift to the end of a busy day.

Looking over the pavilion green towards the night sky one could easily be transported to another place allowing a moment to reflect and relax. How often do we rush through life without stopping to notice much? If we could interrupt our ‘autopilot’ mode which at times, we can often engage with during the day we can absorb the wonderful surroundings we live in. Over the years the village has changed, expanded, experiencing new road links and a Facebook page. From the oldest part of the village which I believe is in Old Church Road, to the new builds off New Road, the village is an inspiring area in which to live. LOCAL GROUPS/SOCIETIES

We would be pleased to advertise your meetings and dates for you. All you have to do is supply a list of forthcoming events to the Parish Clerk. Deadline for contributions for the next Villager article: 10/12/15

Out Ea Eating www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk

THE area surrounding the Wheatsheaf (Harvester) in Coleshill has changed an awful lot over the past 100 years.

The pub itself has stood the test of time and is one of a handful of landmarks still remaining. There was a Water Mill opposite which stood next to a mill pond. The river was diverted to it’s current course during the construction of the Stonebridge Road By-pass and the Mill demolished. Across the road stood the Kings Head public house, or the Queens Head depending on the sex of the reigning Monarch. This was demolished in the 1960’s. Apart from the medieval bridge of the River Cole, the Wheatsheaf is the only remaining feature from a time gone by. Well now this well known landmark famous for it’s Chicken and Ribs, is about to get a much needed facelift. Owners M&B are ploughing over £300k in to a complete refurbishment of the popular restaurant. Manager Chris Wright told us: “The Wheatsheaf is an iconic landmark in Coleshill which is why we believe it deserves a good makeover. We’ll be decorating inside and out, installing brand new toilet facilities, brand new ‘Feel good dining’ menu and a complete new salad cart allowing for more variety of items including baby gurkins, pickled onions and a new bread station.”

He continued: “The refurb has created several new jobs at the Wheatsheaf including Chefs, Kitchen Staff, Waiting and Bar Staff.” Chris has been the manager of the pub/ restaurant since October 2014 and his wealth of experience really shows. Chris said: “Myself and my wife have been in charge at Bassetts Pole for 20 years, my wife is still there. I was approached by the directors of Harvester and they asked if I’d like to run the Wheatsheaf in order to provide stability and make the most of my vast experience in the industry.” “I have pushed for this refurbishment so that Coleshill can have it’s Harvester back. A more welcoming place to bring your family either to eat or simply have a drink in the bar.” As far as drinks go Chris told us he will be serving Carling, Amstel and Stella amongst other lagers and three traditional hand poured Ales bringing back the skill to being a cellerman. The refurb will take place between 11th and 26th October. If you would like more information on the new vacancies you can contact Chris at wheatsheafcoleshill@harvester.co.ukTo book a table, please contact Jackie on: 01675 465661. Christmas bookings are also available now online. You can also order meals for Takeaway.

Home front recall

SERIES CONTINUED: The Coleshill and District Civic Society

PART 7 FINAL CHAPTER

HERITAGE

TO commemorate the fortieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War a national project called Home Front Recall was organised to record civilian life during the war.

This project was funded by National Heritage and the Big Lottery Fund. Coleshill Civic Society decided to take part in this and asked Coleshill Local History Society if they would participate and organise the project. This was agreed. It was suggested that the Group recorded memories of the daily life of local residents and others who had been in the area during the period. The History Group began by organising a public meeting in the Market Hall. The event was publicised in the Local Press and Civic Society members who lived in Coleshill during the war were encouraged to attend. The turnout on the afternoon was far more than expected and we listened to people like Mary Leeson, Ray Spencer, Joan Gascoigne, Lord Henry Plumb and others who stood up and told their wonderful stories of happenings in Coleshill. It was an amazing afternoon, people wanted to talk about those days, long past, and the History Group were rather overwhelmed by so many memories. We decided a better approach would be to interview people and record data one at a time or in small groups. So members split up and talked to people in their own homes and listened to their tales, often asking questions that brought out more wartime happenings. These were recorded and were transcribed later. At the same time we were receiving written accounts, for example the History of the Home Guard in Coleshill and extracts from the Log

Book of ARP Coleshill Wardens Post No 1. A great deal of information was collected both from Coleshill and Whitacre. The History Group decided on eleven topics which became chapters in a book plus odd bits of information which needed to be included but didn’t warrant a chapter of their own. The subjects recorded were Air Raid Precautions; Bombing; Rationing; Evacuees; Home Guard; Land Army; Civilian Uniformed Organisations which included the Air training Corp, GTC – Girls Training Corp, Ambulance, Police Specials, Red Cross, VAD, Air Raid Warden, St Johns Ambulance and the Auxiliary Fire Service; Prisoners of War; Army Camps which included the Americans and Canadians; St Edwards Boys Home; and lastly the extra pieces which were called Titbits. The need to enable anyone to read the data collected meant a great deal of hard work by a few Civic Members and stalwarts of the History Group to put it together as a book. Eventually “Wartime Coleshill” was produced and printed. From the vast amount of material and stories collected the one topic that everyone of the people who contributed always mentioned was the “Bombing” but on a happier note the wartime children, who in 2009 were of course adults, remembered the wartime as a lovely time for youngsters who lived in the countryside with lots of freedom and surprisingly a feeling of being safe and unafraid. Beside the book DVDs have been made of filmed interviews. These permanent records are available to any local groups or schools should they require them and the photographs used in the book are in the Heritage room at the Old Market Hall.

Anyone who has enjoyed the pieces about the Civic Society has any old photographs of Coleshill over the years. Photographs of any buildings which are no longer here are a valuable record. Please let the Civic Society know, either through the Post or direct to the Civic Society and they can then be copied and placed on the display in the Old Market Hall. 1 Church Hill, Coleshill, B46 3AD. 01675 462 870 . Email: coleshillcivicsociety@yahoo.co.uk

Series Summary THE Society has continued to monitor planning applications for the District through the Planning Sub-Committee and is pro-active in lobbying for progressive and sensitive development, recognising that change is inevitable but should be beneficial to the community.

We are currently represented on the group of councillors and residents who are developing the Neighbourhood Plan. We are frequently involved in making representations to Local Authorities at Town, Borough and County levels and co-operate and participate in Civic Events such as the Coleshill 800 Day in 2007 which commemo-

rated the granting of a Market Charter to the Town in 1207. On this occasion we mounted an exhibition in The Old Market Hall in conjunction with the celebration organised by the Town Council. In 2008 we were the only local organisation to formally complain to the Borough Council about the confidential sale of the main car park in the town and have continued to stress the need for adequate consultation with residents before disposing of important community facilities. In 2010 we were faced with a greater change when the plans for High Speed Rail 2 were announced as this project will have a major impact on our area. Following discussion with our MP we convened a meeting with local groups and societies to form an Action

Group to work on behalf of residents. This led to a public meeting in the Parish Church in 2011 when the Coleshill HS 2 Action Group was formed. The Society has representatives on the Action Group and has sponsored their activities by giving the free use of the Market Hall for Advice Clinics and donating funds for communication. The Civic Society is represented on the Coleshill Junction Community Forum which has been set up to consult on the plans for the implementation of High Speed Rail 2 and our representatives are very active in meetings of the Community Forum and discussions with HS 2 Engineers. The Society has a long history of activity in maintaining the twenty miles of public footpaths in the Parish and, have confirmed our continuing interest by committing to a new Volunteer Agreement with Warwickshire County Council.

Fifty Years On At the end of 50 years it can be said that the Coleshill Civic Society is still flourishing. There are over one hundred and fifty members, probably the biggest group in Coleshill. The Society operates a very successful community hall, has an active Archive Centre with a rapidly growing collection of archives, documents and photographs. The exhibition area downstairs is in continuous development. Our motto, ‘to cherish the past, to adorn the present and to create for the future’ has inspired many people over the past forty years. Long may it continue to do so.

Coleshill High Street set to get even more glamorous Glitzy Bits to open new occasion wear store at 109 High Street Fa Fashion www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk WHEN it comes to glamorous fashion retail, Coleshill High Street may not be the first location to spring to mind.

However one dynamic duo of intrepid style gurus decided to change this with the creation of a small ladies fashion boutique fantastically entitled Glitzy Bits. Established for 2 years in October it has become well known locally for high end one off pieces as well as limited edition shoes, bags and outfits. We sat down with Ryan Evans and Billy Sumner to talk about their exciting new project, Liliann Occasion Wear. The pair have transferred their obvious passion for glamorous fashion to a brand new contemporary occasional wear retail store, specializing in ‘mother of the bride’, prom dresses and christening wear, the store will boast designer brands, one off pieces along with hats, shoes and accessories. With considerable investment the pair hope to fill a gap in the market and provide beautiful occasional wear from a store situated in the welcoming and increasingly vi-

brant High St location Billy told us: “We have been on the High Street for two years now and Coleshill is a great place to have a business. Branching out in to occasional wear is a natural progression for us and when the former OJ Beads premises became available we jumped at the chance to take it on for our new venture.” Ryan added: “We have a new new partner for Liliann Occasion Wear, Julie Wibberley from Market Bosworth brings her vast experience in this part of the industry helping us to grow both stores effectively. We also continue to have a superb social media partner on board aswell, ensuring that online interaction via our twitter and facebook pages will keep our customers informed on all our new products ” Liliann Occasion Wear opens on October 19th , with their launch week opening hours running from 10am – 8pm, Monday to Saturday. For more information visit Liliann Occasion Wear on https://www.facebook.com/ liliann.occasionwear or call Ryan or Billy at Glitzy Bits on 01675 465718

OUT Local advisor returns to the High Street 27 years after he first began Pr Property www.thecoleshillpost.co.uk IT’s taken over a quarter of a century, but after starting his career in the financial services industry, Phil Salinas has finally returned to Coleshill High Street in his own office only yards from where he began in 1988 with Lloyds bank. After working for several of the UK’s major banks and institutions throughout his career, working on investments, pensions, mortgages and long term care amongst other things, Phil set up Coleshill Mortgages in the early 2000’s. Phil told us: “After a long and interesting career in the financial sector I realised that people would always need mortgages. I had done a lot of work in this area and so decided I would specialise in that area. Since I began I have been growing the business through my network of contacts, friends and family, word of mouth and my work with estate agents and accountants.” “I have always worked out from home or out of office blocks and I decided that

the time was right to move in to a High Street premises and when this property became available I jumped at the chance.” The idea behind the move is to make financial services more accessible to the public and being on the High Street enables customers to drop in for a chat and book an appointment. Phil continued: “The primary goal of the business is customer service, we want to make things happen and that’s exactly what we do. This is why the business is so successful.” For those seeking financial and mortgage advice Phil gave us this advice. “Basically be prepared as much as you can. Don’t wait to seek advice until you are ready to put an offer in. As soon as you decide you’d like to move or remortgage the first thing to do is seek professional independent advice. Criteria can be so varied from lender to lender that is well finding out what is available to you.” If you would like to talk to Phil you can find Coleshill Mortgages on Coleshill High Street, right next to Carters Electrical store.

In all cases we charge a fee for mortgage arrangement of £195 on completion of the transaction plus any commission paid by the lender. Your home may be repossessed if you do not keep up repayments on your mortgage.

GOT HOARDING ISSUES?

THE Open Day at the Shed Project in the Coleshill Allotments was a great success! About 30 people turned up and really got stuck in.

The Allotments look immaculate and everyone has worked hard to make them that way. Councillor Adam Farrell planted some marigold flowers, Sally planted runner beans and Gary planted some sweetcorn. Sally and Anne

watered the sweetcorn and Steven decided to plant cabbages. Peter worked hard again, dug a large area, and weeded where needed. Julie also did some weeding, Allan worked hard and some of the paths were laid with chippings. Councillor Richard Mason put slug pellets down and planted flowers with Julie. Curdworth WI September report By GERALDINE HEELEY Curdworth WI

OVER the summer months the ladies of Curdworth W.I have taken part in a variety of events. We had a summer afternoon tea party in August held in the village hall as the English Summer weather has not been very reliable this year, is it ever?

The ladies dressed in their finery and as usual the catering was exceptional. A group of ladies went to the Shrewsbury flower show where again the weather was very disappointing but this did not spoil the day and many plants were purchased. September was a very busy month for the ladies. Early in September we held our Autumn show and the hidden talents that many ladies possess were well displayed. We had a large number of categories with different classes within them. The cookery category was very popular with entries ranging from truffles to Bakewell tarts through to rock cakes. Each entry was judge not just on appearance but on taste as well. The handicraft section had classes not just on knitting and sewing but on poetry, photography and beading as well. There were quite a few entries for these classes and the standard was very high which gave the judges quite a headache deciding on the eventual winners. Handicrafts : 1st Pauline Isaac, 2nd Kate Burwell, 3rd Barbara Griffiths. Handicrafts Best in Show: Helen Smith for knitted toy and Sandra Bullivant for beaded bauble. Produce: 1st Pat Johnson, 2nd Kath Ibbotson, 3rd Hilda Smith and Janet Matthews Produce Best in Show: Hilda Smith for her Bakewell tart and Pat Johnson for a sprig of roses. The awards were presented at the beginning of our monthly meeting. We were very fortunate this month to have a talk and beauty demonstration by the ladies from Estee Lauder. Our secretary, Ann Howgate, was the lucky lady chosen to be “made over”. As the beauticians applied the products to Ann they not only explained the rational behind it but also passed samples of the products through the audience so that we could examine them ourselves. They also gave us a potted history of the beginnings and growth of the Estee Lauder Company. The company be-

gan in 1946 with just 4 products, 2 face creams, a cleanser and a facemask. The company was founded by Josephine Estelle Mendza & Joseph Lauder but they used Josephine’s nickname and her husband’s name to name the company hence the name Estee Lauder. They started by bringing their products into Estee’s hairdresser and applying the cream to women while they were under the hairdryers. Estee Lauder took her famous perfume, Youth Dew, into Zaks in New York and asked them to stock it but the company would not agree and on the way out she dropped a bottle of bath oil. There was so many comments by the customers to the store regarding the “pleasant fragrance” left by the broken bottle that the store relented and started to stock the products. It took the Lauders 14 years to become millionaires. The CWIRLS (Curdworth W.I. Ramblers and Luncheon Society) met at The Cuttle Bridge Hotel, Kingsbury Road, this month and had a very pleasant walk, on one of the better summer days, along the canal side through the fields into Minworth village arriving back at the hotel in time for lunch. On Wednesday 16th September we celebrated the actual 100th anniversary of the W.I. with a meal in the village hall. Two of our commendable ladies, Barbara Griffiths and Hilda Smith, volunteered to cook a meal and members of the committee served 60 ladies a 2-course meal complete with wine. Our next social event is a quiz night, complete with a fish’n’chip supper on Friday 9th October at 7.30pm. The event will be held in Curdworth village hall and is open to anyone who wishes to attend. We are also holding an evening of entertainment, with food, on Saturday 14th November where there will be singers, dance demonstration and an opportunity for you to dance as well. As there is catering involved for both of these events tickets must be purchased in advance. Please contact Carol Hale on 0121 351 5579 for further details. As you can see we have a varied range of activities and if you would like to attend one of our meetings with a view to becoming a member please feel free to do so. We meet in Curdworth village hall at 7.30pm on the 1st Thursday of each month.

Mr Birmingham takes up the offer and writes for The Post We are very proud to introduce you to our latest columnist Joshua Williams

Joshua Williams Mr Birmingham 2015

WELL, it's finally here! I'm extremely excited to be joining the Coleshill Post as a regular columnist sharing my thoughts and experiences with the people of Coleshill and beyond. Realistically though, what could a 17 year old possibly know that you would be interested in. I hate to disappoint but it's not all parties and hanging out on street corners like some would like you to believe. Although, I must admit, the parties do sound quite appealing. At 17, I managed to win the Mr Birmingham title meaning I have the privilege of being an ambassador to Birmingham for the next two years as well as going through to Mr England where I placed third - the youngest person ever to do so. Further, I join local homeless outreach organisation The Red Bag Co in feeding and supplying aid to the homeless in Birmingham of which I am an ambassador and I also get to campaign for something I am very passionate about, ending stigma and discrimination of mental health, alongside national charity Time To Change. These are but two examples of work I frequently do in the community

whilst studying full time. I personally believe we all have some form of obligation to support each other as human beings be it with compassion, advice or directly trying to support another individuals life for the better. I'm looking forward to being able to share such experiences with you all in addition to targeting topics I am passionate about from popular media to current affairs. So why have I joined the Coleshill Post? Well, for as long as I can remember, the thing I enjoy the most is writing. Academically writing is very controlled and quite dire at times. I like the freedom to be able to write as I please. Be it a review of a concert or a 10 chapter book on a snail (yes, I was very young and somehow managed to form a whole novel about a snail being trod on and yes it was as weird as it sounds) away from studying I have the freedom to, in short, write as I please. The whole objective behind this column is sometimes to inform, occasionally to rant, and, further, to promote local organisations to a larger audience. I'm looking forward to sharing this journey with you! Until next time, Joshua.

By SALLY JONES Journalist

On Wednesday September 16th, Coleshill WI along with thousands of other groups across the country celebrated the centenary of the founding of the Women’s Institute in Britain.

They staged an indoor afternoon tea party and free raffle for members, friends and supporters including two dauntless husbands. President Christine Jones ran a lively musical quiz,

reading out a story in which the participants filled in the gaps using the titles of songs played on the piano by Mavis Gordon, from folk tunes such as “Early One Morning” and “Molly Malone” to sea songs like “Saucy Arethusa.” “Coleshill WI is part of the national Women’s Institute which is still going strong after 100 years and attracting thousands more women all over the country each year,” said Christine Jones. “Everyone had a good time at the tea party and dressed up in their best garden party attire. There was a really friendly atmosphere and a lot of laughs during the quiz as we had quite a mixture of wellknown tunes and some relatively obscure ones. We’re especially grateful to Deanna Baker and her sister Margaret Burrell who laid on a delicious afternoon tea. Best of all we didn’t have to do the washing up – quite a treat for us as we’re often the ones doing the catering. We’ve had several new members lately and anyone interested in coming along to sample the WI would be very welcome. At our next meeting on October 13th our speaker Geoff Croft who’s giving a talk entitled ‘Apple Time’ has asked us to bring 20 pounds of apples between us as he’s going to show us how to press them and make apple juice.” Anyone interested in finding out more about Coleshill WI should contact Christine Jones on 01675-462012.

Youmayhavenoticedthatmyfoodcolumn was missing from last month’s paper. I was whisked to Italy after kindly being invited to review a hotel high above the Tuscan Hills. Whilst there, I experienced a wine tasting night, as well as demolishing a seven course tasting menu from the hotel. I simply couldn’t get enough of the Tuscan ham and cheese. We all know that Italian dishes can be ordered in almost every restaurant we are likely to visit. And most of the time, they will be perfectly executed by a top chef. However, sometimes we forget that we too, can create elegant meals straight from our very own kitchen. Not forgetting, the best part about cooking the dishes is that they are quick and easy to make and you are already likely to have the ingredients stocked in your cupboard. This hearty recipe I am sharing with you has been trialled and tested - (by my very honest and hungry family and boyfriend ) and is a fabulous meal to cook if you want nothing more than to throw some ingredients into a pan after a long day at the office. So why not try this recipe for yourself?

Ingredients you will need (Serves 4) 270g dried conchigliette pasta 2 boneless chicken breasts 4 rashes of sliced bacon 2 cups of sliced mushroom 70g of sundried tomatoes 5 tbsp fresh basil pesto 70ml of single cream Sea salt + ground black pepper Oil for brushing the frying pan

Method

1. Fill a large saucepan with water and bring to the boil. 2. Add 270g of pasta to the water and cook for 10-12 minutes. 3. Chop the chicken into small cubes and add to non-stick frying pan. Cook on medium to high heat for 5-6 minutes. 4. Stir in the sliced bacon, mushrooms, and season with salt and pepper. 5. Next, add the sundried tomatoes and cook for a further 3 minutes. 6. Drain pasta in a colander and add pasta to frying pan. 7. Finally, stir in the pesto and cream. Season once more with salt and pepper. 8. For best results, serve immediately with a big glass of white wine. If you decide to try this recipe, please email me at emma.stokes@thecoleshillpost.co.uk and let me know your thoughts!

HS2 now departing for the Euston buffers! By Derek Axe Reader

LAST year the DfT quietly announced that HS2 would not be directly linked to HS1 thus severing a vital arterial link between the Midlands and continental Europe.

At a stroke the DfT had undermined the whole case for HS2. For Midland passengers this would mean departing from their HS2 train at Euston and dragging their suitcases down the Euston Road to St Pancras before joining their HS1 train to continental Europe. This sounds familiar because this is what we do now. So who will be joining the queue for premium priced HS2 tickets when Virgin Trains already offer value for money tickets? Not me, even if HS2 is 20 minutes faster. So why was this decision made? I think there may be three related answers. 1. To save money within the £45 billion HS2 project 2. To placate the north London establishment who were already making their opposition to the link known 3. To remind us here in the Provinces that HS2 is really only about London. Well, so much for the sincerity of Chancellor and his already fading ‘Northern Powerhouse’ posturing. I am surprised that Midland political heavyweights are not protesting more about this decision. It really is beyond belief that someone thinks spending £45 billion on a pointless ride into London buffers is a sensible application of public money when so much of our existing railway infrastructure is in such a poor state of repair. Once again real vision has become nothing more than a foggy mess and my dream of catching a train from Birmingham direct to Paris a fantasy. Now who said that the French, Germans, Spanish and Italians do things so much better than we do when it comes to rail travel?

Want to get things off your chest? We want to hear from you, and so do your fellow readers!

Whatever you want to say and however you want to say it, then this is the place to do it. The Coleshill Post is dedicated to the community which is why it’s so important to learn about the issues that really affect us all, from those who are most affected. Isn’t it in all of our interests to have CCTV?

Why dont’t our children learn about politics in school?

THERE’S an art group based at the Old Market Hall, Church Hill. We are a really friendly bunch of amature budding Rembrants, it takes place every Wednesday 10 till 1. There are other forms of art too, we have even had instruction on how to make things from coloured glass, I made a small Christmas tree which was fun. Do come and join us with any ideas you may have, you will be made very welcome. Why was the provision of CCT cameras in Coleshill so hotly contested In the recent elections, I would have thought it would have been in everyone’s interest now that a police presence in Coleshill is a rare event due to government cut backs, surely these cameras would help to keep us safer and catch vandals hell bent on spoiling Coleshill. As parking is causing great concern why not use the space that will be created due to the now abandoned gymnasium by the fire station opposite Morrisons, a three story car park would solve this problem, either there or the old police station site. A message to the young man hell bent on ruining our eardrums with that very noisy motor bike round Coleshill “keep the decibels down son your not impressing anyone”.

By Andrea Appleby Reader

LATELY it seems that politics is getting more and more popular.

The massive amount of coverage received by the elections in May and the media frenzy surrounding the recent Labour Party leader elections surely proves that for the first time since the early eighties, people are taking an active interest in those who directly effect their day to day lives. This can only be a good thing, we should hold the public servants that make up our parliament to account. But how do we make the right choices without any education. Growing up in the eighties and nineties, politics was almost a taboo subject. It is my belief that the neo-liberals like Thatcher and Regan intentionally engineered an apolitic society, if the population know nothing about how the world works then how can they possibly have an opinion. Through media moguls like Rupert Murdoch and Lord Rothermere they influenced the majority in anyway they needed to do divert attention from them. This is why I believe so strongly that the next generation should have politics on the curriculum. I want my children to be able to decipher and understand what our political representatives are telling them and make informed decisions based on knowledge, not propaganda. A local politics group might be a good idea for those interested in learning more.

FACEBOOK, to some people, it might seem, is essential to their lives. You see teenagers, and some adults, glued to their phones updating people on their friends list with the latest going on in their everyday life. Facebook was originally set up for university students to keep in contact with each other, but it gradually spread to the general population. Now people use it to let other people, be that those on their friends list or absolute strangers( if their account isn’t locked securely!), know whats going on in every waking moment of their existance. The good side of Facebook is that it brings people and communities together, in some cases people who wouldn’t normally get to converse and mix with other people of the same interest etc. Also it’s great for following bands, celebrities( if you’re into that sort of thing!) and also for keeping track on what the many video game companies are doing. All this is well and good but, if your account isn’t securely locked down, to lets say only family and friends can view and post on it, then you open yourself up to everyone being able to see your daily goings on. The other bad side of Facebook, is the fact that people can say exactly what they want on there and most of the time there will be no reprecussions. Pretty much anyone can make an account and be completely anonymous online! This leads to bullying and the new inword at the moment, trolling. So Facebook for the most part is and does good things. But, as long as you use it for what it was intended for and you are careful. I just don’t understand some people who post about every single thing they’re doing in every single moment of their daily life.

Destruction of Coleshill and self inflicted maddness By Mike O’Sullivan Shropshire Reader

NWBC are to consider a “revised” plan from Harworth Estates, for the former Daw Mill Colliery. Harworth Estates have employed a traffic consultant, whose “revised” plan, “compounds” the traffic problems for Coleshill. Driver’s will be “encouraged” to use Church Hill, High Street and the Coventry Road travelling through Coleshill on an east/south line. The driver’s sat nav will instruct them to travel through Coleshill, on am east/west line (via the Green Man cross roads). So, there will be lorries, coming and going in all directions. It’s not rocket science just common-sense, the town of Coleshill can not cope with these lorries. NWBC have a responsibility to the community of Coleshill and must say “No” to the planning application. I am a regular visitor to Coleshill, born in the town, 1942. Destruction of Coleshill and self-inflicted madness!!

PICTURED: Deborah Palmer, Animal Warden (Dog Control), North Warwickshire Borough Council with puppy at Ninestones Kennels.

THE Borough Council’s Dog Warden Service has just been awarded a Gold Stray Dog Footprint award from the RSPCA as part of their 2015 Community Animal Welfare Footprints scheme.

This is the second consecutive year the council has been awarded the Gold Standard. North Warwickshire Borough Council is the only council in the county of Warwickshire to achieve the award. The award scheme, which

has been running since 2008, is unique across England and Wales, as it celebrates good practice and rewards organisations that go that step further and aim for high animal welfare standards. The criteria for the Stray Dogs Footprint is to have clear policies on the welfare of stray dogs during collection and kennelling; be positive in educating owners about canine care and have preventative measures to reduce straying.

In the last year, North Warwickshire’s Dog Warden service dealt with 76 secured stray dogs which were taken to Ninestones Kennels in Curdworth, 64 reports of roaming dogs, 135 fouling complaints and 34 dangerous dog complaints. For those dogs taken to kennels the majority were reunited with their owners, 23 were rehomed and only three were put to sleep because of illness or injury. Wendy Smith, Environmental Health Manager at the Borough Council said: “We are extremely proud to be able to display this Gold Footprint Award from the RSPCA for the second year running. The role of the Dog Warden has changed dramatically over the last few years and, with the introduction of new legislations, it will continue to evolve. Our Borough has its own challenges, we have a geographically large rural area to cover and because of this we feel it is important to interact and work together with the community. We have ran a very successful micro-chipping service across North Warwickshire, we also provide a comprehensive dog fouling programme which includes monitoring, a structured complaints process, anti - fouling signage and the issuing of fixed penalty notices to the offending dog owners who refuse to clear up after their dogs. We would like to build on our past success and continue to develop this unique service.” To report stray dogs, ring the Borough Council on 01827 715341 or report them online at www.northwarks.gov.uk

The Parish Church welcomed visitors to

the Church Tower as well as offering afternoon tea and cakes and having lots of stalls outside to raise money for the church. ‘Many High Street Shops were open’ commented Penny Johnson the florist ‘and most of the people we saw were new customers who had obviously come along to Coleshill for the day thanks to the huge variety of events on offer’. Marie Stephenson, local marketing consultant and business coach who organises the Market for Love Coleshill every year said ‘there were so many people arriving that we did not have enough time to talk to everyone but we were glad they came! The Business46 networking association has enjoyed a busy few months.

Andy Niven of AJN Accountacy with Karen Tracey (nee Mercer-West)

On August 13th local businesses enjoyed summer drinks and a delicious BBQ at a lovely social evening hosted by the Norton Bar and Grill in Coleshill. By Martin Jenkins Coleshill Cricket Club

COLESHILL completed a fantastic 2015 season with a comfortable seven wicket victory over bottom side Solihull Blossomfield on Saturday, to confirm a very much deserved promotion back to the Warwickshire Cricket League Premier Division after a two year absence since relegation in 2013.

Shortly after the celebrations began, news came through that leaders Studley had only managed a draw in their game, meaning that Coleshill leaped top spot to claim the Championship League title. A fantastic achievement by captain Pete Magafas to lead his side to top spot with perfect timing on the final day of the season. The victory didn’t come without it’s problems though, as overnight and morning rain in Solihull had left areas of the square deemed unfit to play initially before some running repairs could be made to ensure safety was maintained in the official’s minds. A start was finally made over two hours late with Coleshill delighted to win the toss and elect to field, knowing a win would guarantee promotion. Two early wickets for Sunny Ahmed had the already relegated hosts in trouble at 16/2 before a steadying of the ship was briefly made by Nathan Myers, who top scored with 30, took Bloss to 51/2. From then on wickets fell with regular frequency as Ilyas Amin and Junaid Ahmed kept the pressure on the home side who struggled to score fluently. At 78/7 three figures looked doubtful, but a determined contribution by skipper Ben Seifas helped them to a final 31 over tally of 111/9. A large feature of Coleshill’s success this year has been the opening partnerships between Magafas and left-hander Mo Fahim, and particularly with the speed their runs had been scored at, and once again the pairing got Coleshill’s reply off to a flying start by hitting 40 runs in the first five

overs before Fahim fell to Myers for 13. Two more solid stands were to follow as victory soon became a formality with Magafas leading from the front in determined fashion with an unbeaten 61 as Coleshill reached their victory target in the 24th over, supported by Sheraz Khan who made 21. The celebrations stepped up several gears when news of the other resulted confirmed that Coleshill were champions with 342 points, three clear of Studley and Highway both on 339, with the former also promoted based on results between the two clubs.

SEASON REVIEW DIVISION One has been a strange season in some ways with no one club showing the consistency that is expected, as many sides beat each other with only a few teams struggling. Coleshill started the season in style with the bat, which continued to be a feature with many high scores notched over the summer months. The first third of the season saw Coleshill post four wins and a colossal winning draw in their first match, against Solihull Blossomfield when skipper Pete Magafas (172) and Zeeshan Ahmad (143) shared an incredible record opening stand of 321 before the team posted 405/4. Victories over Pak Shaheen, Highway and Southam were tempered by defeat at Studley and a poor performance losing at home to Standard but by mid June, Coleshill were certainly proving to be one of several promotion candidates. This was the stage of the season when Mo Fahim was promoted to the top of the order following some consistent efforts which included 94 not out v Pak Shaheen. Fahim was to go on to record an incredible purple patch mid-summer with consecutive scores of 98 42 53* 99* 116 54 34 and 136 which was a massive reason why Coleshill again recorded another four wins from their next six, including vitally a convincing 182 revenge win over title rivals Studley, at Memorial Park. Late July to early August brought the

inevitable blip of the season when form suddenly seemed to slide and three defeats in four, including against Highway, started asking questions of Coleshill’s chances of promotion. However, as previously mentioned other sides also tended to slip up sometimes unexpectedly which kept the promotion race wide open throughout the final few weeks. A winning draw on 15 August against Bronze set things up nicely against leaders Knowle Village on 22 August for what turned out to be a low-scoring affair. Knowle were bowled out for 155 thanks to both Akmal Bashir and Ilyas Amin each taking four wickets, but Coleshill’s run chase proved eventful and it was Bashir who earned a man of the match tag batting at number nine with a vital 34 when all seemed lost to take Coles to the brink of victory, before Sean McKee saw the team home by the narrowest of margins. Knowle Village’s challenge fell away very quickly with further defeats to Barby and Studley, who had now taken over at the top The Bank Holiday weekend saw the top three sides as well as Pak Shaheen all take 24 points to stay in the running. Coleshill’s 159 run thrashing of Fillongley included a first ton for the club from Naveed Bashir (119) again showing what an all-round team effort the club’s success has been down to this year. Monday proved to be a traditional Bank Holiday washout with no game getting a start so it was down to two September Saturday’s. Coleshill had a tricky trip to Pak Shaheen who were in fourth place going into the match, and a very professional job was done by the visitors ending their hosts’ promotion hopes with an impressive eight-wicket win with Amin and both Bashir’s playing big parts. Meanwhile, Studley clung on at the top scraping a desperate one-wicket win over Standard and Highway dropped seven points at Bronze who held them to a draw. The final day then saw Coleshill gain promotion with their win at Solihull Blossomfield and as Studley could only manage 105/4 from their 48 overs by making sure of not losing, they gained their promotion at the expense of Highway, let Coleshill in for the title.

WHEN it comes to talking about heavyweight boxers in this country, talk always mentions the great names and icons such as Lennox Lewis, Frank Bruno, the late Sir Henry Cooper, Billy Walker, Brian London, Jack Bodell, Don Cockell, Joe Bugner, Danny Williams, Bruce Woodcock etc etc.

These days it’s hard to become a house hold name in Boxing. Long gone are the family around the radio or main TV showing live boxing. Now its all pay per view and fighters who want to pick and choose 1 fight a year, or at the best of it become more renowned for being a brash, trash talking disrespectful yob who after 1 fight thinks he can take on the world. To become a world champion you have to win that belt. To become a loved world champion you have to have the love and respect of the people. The ticket buyers who will travel to support you and make sure they want to be involved in that time of glory when it is your time, your place and your glory. In my opinion the heavyweight division at this moment is a joke. David Price, Audley Harrison, David Haye, Dereck Chisora, Tyson Fury are not cut with the same cloth as former legends.

They will never become household respected names and will not be remembered in 20 years time. They will fade into obscurity like used gloves thrown on top of a dirty dusty shelf in a gym somewhere that will get dusted once every few years with the only memory that someone thinks it once belonged to someone but they cannot remember. Every 10 to 15 years we see a heavyweight who looks promising and who may catch the lazy eye of reporters and also fight fans. Anthony Joshua however seems to have that thing that is looking more appealing than Tyson Fury can only dream about. Joshua the unbeaten professional of 13 fights and newly crowned WBC International Heavyweight champion is coming into The Midlands area for 3 shows to talk with all fans about his life in the sport and what he plans to do over the next year or so. The sensation who seems to be making all the right moves in the boxing world is the one people are re-putting their faith into and I think they are on a winning track. Third event is on Friday 9th October being held at The Hilton Hotel in Coventry by promoters Allen and Blyth promotions. 3 course meal is included with tickets and normal photo and auction of sport memorabilia added. Tickets can be obtained by calling 07980313414.

FIFTH and seventh. I look back on my weekend in the Formula Renault Eurocup at the Nurburgring now, and it actually could have been a lot worse.

We didn’t have the easiest time and it was disappointing, because we had the pace and we didn’t have the opportunity to use it. I know I sound like a sportsman being politically correct, but that definitely is the case! Practice on Friday was encouraging. I was within a few thousandths of a second of the fastest time set by anyone on old tyres in the first session, and in the second session I didn’t get a lap together without traffic, but I knew my Koiranen GP car was quick. That was proved in first qualifying, when I was second in my group behind Louis Deletraz, which gave me third on the grid, despite only getting only one quick lap in before yellow flags came out. Louis went out a minute earlier so he got the second lap in; but equally, if I’d gone out 20 seconds later I wouldn’t have got any fliers, so it could have been a lot worse. I think I actually led the race for about two metres – it was three-abreast into the first corner between me, Louis and my team-mate Jack Aitken. It was a bit tight and Ukyo Sasahara got in there, and I was battling him for second when he cut across and hit me pretty hard, damaging the steering and putting the toe out. As I lost momentum Matevos Isaakyan got past me for third, and then late in the race I lost fourth to Ben Barnicoat, who made a good move – a total divebomb into the first corner! The handling was pretty bad but after the race we looked at it, and the steering was so close to snapping from the Sasahara contact – that could easily have been zero points for me. It rained a lot overnight and, although it was dry by the time we went out, track conditions made a big effect on the order for second qualifying. Jack and I were both on the fourth row, but if I’d been just two hundredths quicker I’d have been on the second row. That shows how tight it is – the line is so fine. Heavier rain before the start meant we got the race going behind the safety car. I was desperate for a normal standing start because I’m really confident in my ability to get away in the wet, but we didn’t get that. I was chasing Kevin Jorg for sixth when Sasahara made a mistake, and Kevin got past him. As I tried to overtake Sasahara I ran a bit wide and Jack got past me, so now I was down in eighth. On the last lap I passed Sasahara into the chicane, but he went straight on and rejoined still in front of me, but the stewards penalised him, which put me up to seventh. Next round is at Le Mans in two weeks’ time. I’m only 12 points off Louis at the top of the championship, with Kevin and Jack in between us, so it’s mega close! The last five races haven’t gone entirely to plan, so to pick up the points we have done puts us in a good position. We just need to have a clean qualifying to use our pace.

LEFT TO RIGHT: Will Bramley and Simon Ferguson

By Sally Jones Journalist

TENNIS coach Will Bramley, 27, from Coleshill is celebrating after an impressive debut for Warwickshire Men’s side at the AEGON Inter-County Tennis Championship which saw the Midlanders winning promotion to Group 4 after several years of relegation.

Bramley, who runs the prestigious the prestigious Tennis Academy at the University of Warwick with his doubles partner Simon Ferguson, 28, has long been recognised as one of the county’s top doubles players and his form throughout was outstanding. At 6 foot 5 and powerfully built, his huge serve proved highly effective on the fast North Oxford grass courts. Despite playing at Third pair each day, mainly with Ferguson but also partnering the inexperienced Richard Partridge, he dropped only four rubbers all week and was named Player of the Day on Monday and Thursday. He and Ferguson were also the only players of the powerful 8-strong squad picked for every match. On Day 1, the partnership won 2 out of 3 as the county thrashed Gloucestershire 8-1 and they went one better the next day, winning three out of three during the 7-2 drubbing of Durham and Cleveland. Even against favourites Dorset, they held their own,

beating their opposite numbers but the top Dorset pairs were too strong and Warwickshire was narrowly beaten 4-5, their only loss of the week. This left them needing a win in Thursday’s match against promotion rivals Devon to ensure a return to Group 4. When Warwickshire’s First pair of the highly-rated junior international Mason Recci from Solihull and his travelling coach Maniel Bains suffered a rare loss of form to lose two of their rubbers, however, the prospects looked bleak but Bramley and Richard Partridge proved the county’s saviours, winning two out of three to clinch the vital rubber and a 5-4 overall victory. Upset of the week was their fighting victory from a set down against Devon seconds, former international Danny Ahl and Howard Scott. The final day’s play against stragglers Nottinghamshire was washed out but the Midlanders had already done enough to claim second place and promotion. “I had a brilliant week” said Bramley who first took up the sport at Coleshill Tennis Club aged 6, thanks to his tennis-mad parents Kit and Mike. “I started competing in junior tournaments aged about 10 but I’d never played for Warwickshire as a junior so it was a real thrill to play at my first senior County Week and be part of the team that won promotion. I partner Simon Ferguson in AEGON National League matches – the highest tier of British club tennis – for Beechwood Club in Coventry, so we had plenty of doubles experience and I really enjoy the teamwork

and strategy of that. Quite a few of the younger players are singles specialists and I felt that Simon and I could give them some help with the wiliness and guile we’ve developed in our doubles. On Thursday against Devon when Richard Partridge and I lost the first set of our match against the strong Devon Seconds, I gave him a bit of a talking to, telling him to hold his position on the net rather than backing off, and to make the opponents play every ball. It worked and we got through it 6-4 in the decider. Phew! Now I’m really hoping to play again next year and see if we can clinch our second promotion in a row, up to Group 3. The result was a huge relief to Men’s captain Graeme Adams, Tenis Manager at the Stratford-upon-Avon Club, who praised the play of the county’s newest recruit. “I was delighted with how well Will played” he said. “he was not at all overawed but arrived at his first County Week firing on all cylinders and looking a really assured partnership with Simon Ferguson. All the lads played their hearts out but I was specially proud of how Will and Richard Partridge kept their nerve in what proved to be the clincher against the Devon second pair – and that made sure that we gained promotion. There’s no way players of this calibre should be in Group 5 and they did just what was asked of them, clinching several ultra-tight marathon rubbers, which made all the difference. I’d have been hugely disappointed if we hadn’t bounced back up to Group 4 as with a side like this we deserve to be much higher up the divisions.” For Bramley who lives with his wife Keeley, a dental nurse, and 16-month-old daughter Maya in Station Road, Coleshill, it is back to the day job, bringing on scores of talented Under 14 prospects. One of his star pupils Harry Lazell, 11, is an Under 12 international who is now ranked among the top British youngsters at his age group and playing virtually full-time, while training on a national junior squad in Nottingham. The coach also has his own little prospect to mentor. “Maya is really strong and determined” he smiled, “a typical toddler – and I wouldn’t be surprised if with that sort of resilience, she turns out to be a good tennis player one day. She certainly keeps us on our toes!” Warwickshire Ladies up in elite Group 1 at Eastbourne also finished on a high. Katie Shaw’s talented young side came third overall after a tense 5-4 victory over Lancashire on which went right down to the wire. With the match agonisingly poised at 4 rubbers apiece, the Warwickshire First pair junior international Emily Smith from Sutton Coldfield and Coventry’s Natasha Hillyer kept their nerve in the decider against an inspired Lancs Third pair, eventually battling through 7-5 7-5 to ensure the Midlanders highest finish since they last took the Championship in 2008.

CTFC Match Reports By Alan Beckett Saturday 8th August 2015 - Midland Football League Premier Sporting Kelsa 5 v 2 Coleshill Town Not the best start to a season as newly promoted Sporting Kelsa. Town got off to a good start and were 2-1 up at the break with goals from Nathaniel Lewars and Tom Weale. But the wheels came off the second half with the home team running riot!

Tuesday 11th August - Midland Football League Premier Bardon Hill 2 v 2 Coleshill Town A better performance against another promoted side but still way off last seasons form! Town were again 2-1 up through Luke Barlone and Danico Johnson but a draw was probably a fair result!

Friday 14th August - Emirates FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round Coleshill Town 11 v 0 Ellesmere Rangers | Played at The Lamb, Tamworth FC. Saturday 5th September - Midland Football League Premier Long Eaton 4 v 3 Coleshill Town Long Eaton were the new league leaders and Coleshill almost repeated their achievement of six days prior and knock them off the top! Town were 2-1 up with goals from Demetrius Smikle and Luke Balone and were in complete control, but allowed the home team back into the game with some poor defending. They suddenly found themselves 4-2 down and Simeon Cobourne scored Town’s third but time ran out.

COLESHILL Cricket Club were among 148 local sports projects to secure a share of £10 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund in October 2014.

Since 2011, Inspired Facilities has been helping breathe new life into tired community sports facilities and converting existing buildings into venues suitable for grassroots sport. Coleshill Cricket Club received £45,390 of National Lottery funding to upgrade the facilities at the Memorial Park Sports Centre, works which has now been fully completed. The improvements include refurbished changing and shower rooms, disabled toilet facilities, enhanced security measures and other general external improvements. The Sport England and other local funding investments will benefit a host of sports played at Memorial Park, including both football and cricket. To celebrate this completion, Coleshill Cricket Club ran its Annual Juniors versus Seniors Twenty20 game on Friday 28 August and the event was celebrated by local guests and all club members. Sport England Property Director, Charles Johnston, said: “The Inspired Facilities Fund has had a huge impact on grassroots sport across the country. Since 2011, we’ve invested £94 million into more than 1,800 projects to improve and refurbish sports clubs and transform non-sporting venues into vibrant community sports clubs. “It’s great to see Coleshill Cricket Club join the long list of successful clubs to benefit from this fund and we look forward to visiting the completed Centre.”

Club Chairman Adam Harrison explained: “This is another major achievement for the Club and for sport in Coleshill. This funding has helped make further improvements to the Memorial Park Sports Centre; building on the investments made in 2014 from various funders. This will provide future new facilities for football, cricket and other sports. “I pay tribute to Sport England and other funders for their generous contributions to this project. Importantly, I congratulate all the Club members who provided voluntary support over the past six years to achieve this. We have overcome a lot of uncertainty but our hard work and perseverance, as a Club, has secured a once in a generation investment in this building. I pay thanks to our contractor Hobday Solutions Ltd, who have delivered a wonderfully professional job. This transformational change is a new era for the Centre, for the community and for the Cricket Club.” Local MP, Craig Tracey said: ““This investment by Sport England into Coleshill Cricket Club and the Memorial Park Sports Centre is a great success. There has always has a strong sporting tradition in Coleshill and this money is an investment in young people for today and for the future. I’m sure we will see top class cricketers, footballers and other sports using this first rate facility.” Mayor of Coleshill, Councillor Kirsteen Wootton said: “All the volunteers at Coleshill Cricket Club are to be commended for their hard work and dedication in overseeing this project. It has been wonderful to see money from Sport England invested in the Coleshill community. In providing the match funding for these works Coleshill Town Council are proud to

have supported and enabled the refurbishment programme. The new facilities at the Sports Pavilion provide a focal point for the Memorial Park and will form a centre piece for the Council's development plan which is now underway. Coleshill Town Council remains committed to improving sport and recreation facilities in the park.” Ed McCabe, Warwickshire Cricket Board General Manager commented: “It is great to see such large scale investments being made at one of Warwickshire oldest cricket clubs. We as a Cricket Board worked together with the club to identify potential funding streams to improve the Centre and three years later, a transformational change has taken place. I am proud we have been able to support one of our club’s in securing such large amounts of grant funding, which benefits other sports as well as cricket.” Many more communities are set to benefit from the hugely popular fund with the latest round of the Inspired Facilities now open. Community and voluntary organisations, councils and schools can bid for a share of £20 million to help upgrade facilities that can be unattractive, expensive to run and difficult to maintain, and to convert existing non-sporting buildings into venues that are suitable for grassroots sport. Applying for funding has never been easier. Based on feedback from previous applicants, the Inspired Facilities Fund is now an open programme which means projects can submit applications as soon as they are ready rather than being restricted by a specific deadline. Coleshill Town under 8’s continue to improve after a rocky start AFTER a rocky start to the 2014/2015 campaign, Coleshill Town Youth have gone from strength to strength for the start of the 2015/2016 season.

Sean Humpherston and Aaron Spry have been working extremely hard to ensure the development of the team on and off the pitch, this was made possible with the network of support around them including the parents and Coleshill Town Football Club. Aaron and Sean told us: “This is fantas-

tic for all kids and parents involved, we have 2 great sponsors for the new season and the financial support has been overwhelming, having the likes of Advent and Fusion as our partners we are able to take the team and club to the next level, and help ensure every player is developed in the right way throughout their involvement in football, investing in Grassroots football is a massive focus for us, you can see the development of the kids on and off the pitch its great to see.” Coleshill Town Under 8’s kicked off

with an away fixture to Chemsley Colts on the 13th September and came away with a fantastic 7-2 win. Although there has been a large turn over of players, as you would expect for a reserve side, the team currently stands unbeaten, so far this season, and top of the division. They have won 6 out of 6, including a 5-1 defeat of last seasons’ league winners Romulus. The team continues to provide valuable support for the 1st team with a regular interchange of players. Coleshill Town Ladies, who finished runners up in Div 2 of the B’ham Women’s League, had the reward of a double promotion. Due to league restructuring the team were promoted from Div 2 into the Premier Div. How would the Ladies respond to the jump in divisions? Well, it is early season with only 1 league game played. This was a 6-0 victory against Coventrians. So lets hope the rest of the league season carries on in the same vain. The Ladies also made club history by being admitted into the Womens FA Cup. This was totally new territory, for the Ladies, and they were drawn to play Bradwell Belles, from Stoke. The team took league form into the Cup and ran out 3-1 winners to set up a tie against Lye Town Ladies in the next round. The Under 18 Floodlit League team, in its first season, has had a mixed start. Unavailability of numerous players for various reasons, has provided a selection headache for manager Paul Quinlan. The team suffered 2 defeats in its first 2 league games, but produced a great result in the FA Youth Cup beating Malvern Town 2-0. With players availability now improving, it is hoped the results will continue to improve as the team grows in experience and confidence. The junior section of Coleshill Town continues to flourish, with the club now having 8 teams ranging from Under 8 to Under 18. The teams play in the Central Warwick League and Midland Junior Premier League. The season has only just kicked of for junior sides, so it is early day to comment of form/results but lets hope all the teams have a successfully and enjoyable season Coleshill Soccer School is relaunching on the 3rd of October 10-30am till 12 noon, at the home ground Pack Meadow. Difficult start to the new league season but all's ok in the FA Cup By Alan Beckett CTFC Correspondent

AFTER finishing 4th in 2013/14 and Runner-Up last season, a lot was expected from Manager Paul Casey's Coleshill Town Football Club this season, but it's a tough, tough league and with just one team promoted it's a long, long season.

Coleshill Cricket Club now a first class facility thanks to National Lottery funding See page 38

Last seasons leading goalscorer Shane Benjamin (47) has moved on! Central midfield partners Craig Milligan (moved up a league) and Captain Danny Tymon (long term knee injury) are missing, as is defensive king-pin Danny Douglas (knee injury) and striker Mykel Beckley (hamstring). But Casey has been quick to replace them with quality players most of which have played at a higher level. New arrivals include forwards Luke Barlone, Nathaniel Lewars and Danico Johnson. Midfielders Giovanni Dainty, Demetrius Smikle, Brendan Murphy, Chris Cowley and Reece Leek and experienced defender Rob Evans who is now captain. There are several teams who believe they can win this league, Heanor Town, Long Eaton United, Highgate United, Alvechurch, Shepshed Dynamo and Stourport Swifts to mention a few but the out right favourites are Hereford who have started again this season after the famous Hereford United went into administration. They are currently getting crowds of close on 3000 and have a budget the envy of teams several leagues above. Look out for that game when they

come to Coleshill in November!!!!! Coleshill Town beat Hereford on their own ground in a nine goal thriller in front of a crowd of 2717! Town have also beaten Stourport Swifts who were top of the table at the time, but on the down side have already lost four times in their seven league games so far and currently lie in 15th place. Don't worry folks, it will get better! In the FA Cup however, Town are going really well! So far they have beaten: Ellesmere Rangers 11-0, Stafford Rangers 2-1 and Newcastle Town 3-1 after a replay! Last season they finished the competitions leading scorers with 16! More than the Finalists Aston Villa (11) and Arsenal (14). This season they have scored 19 goals already! The reason Coleshill are playing home games at Tamworth is because their Pack Meadow ground is having a new 3G Artificial pitch installed which will be ready for the 6th October when Bolehall Swifts will be the first visitors in a League Cup game. The owners of Coleshill Town Football Club, Pack Meadow Limited, are transforming the ground that Town have called Home since 1975. Apart from the pitch, new goals, new fencing, new walk ways will all be ready for October and plans for new changing facilities, new club house and upgrading the floodlights are all in place for the future. Please come along and take a look! It's YOUR club representing YOUR Town! The only thing missing is a crowd and that can only be fixed by the good people of Coleshill coming along to support their local team!
