GET DOWN TO
BUSINE The Huether School of Business grounds students in foundational and experiential knowledge, preparing them to become confident leaders at all levels of an organization. Complementing our expert classroom instruction are a variety of hands-on experiences, from group projects and simulations to career fairs and required internships. But really, just like any healthy business, the most important part of our school is the relationships. Students from diverse backgrounds learn to work together toward a greater purpose — whether it’s constructing a successful business plan or problem solving for clients — preparing them for any office environment. Our strategy is to think about the future and then work backward — how can we help our students reach their fullest potential? That’s why we offer 2-in-4 programs, making it possible for students to graduate in four years with a BS and an MBA. If you’re interested in business, there’s a home for you at Saint Rose. We hope to see you in one of our classrooms soon. Dr. Rajarshi Aroskar Dean, Huether School of Business

“Once you graduate, you don’t really know what you want to do. So, taking what I learned from Saint Rose I was able to find a position in the finance department within Nike, and then I got a job as a retail analyst. So, right now what I’m really doing is learning about the consumer, bringing the best assortment to our Nike stores in Paris. I absolutely love it.” MARIA SANCHEZ GONZALEZ ’13 City buyer lead, Nike Paris, Paris, France
“I owe my success to the fairness and openness of the U.S. society entity — but my journey really started with The College of Saint Rose.” HAI LING ’93 Co-president of Northeast Asia and Australasia region, MasterCard Worldwide, Beijing, People’s Republic of China
“I spent most of my junior year in the offices of Professor Hwang, Professor Dion, and Professor Cassidy-Dorion, picking their brains about how to secure my dream internship with the Times Union Center. I believe this internship is what differentiated me from other applicants when I applied to my first role with MSG.” ERIN FELIX ’16 Client relationship specialist, Madison Square Garden Sports, New York, New York
“Educationally, the experiences in the finance program were highly relevant to my current job. The student-managed portfolio investment competition taught me invaluable lessons of investing principles, risk-taking, portfolio construction, and trading decision making, as well as presentation skills and how to pitch stocks. Often it was the mistakes I made in these classes that taught me the most and were invaluable lessons — very much all part of the thrilling but unforgiving stock market, which we monitored closely in the finance program!” JULIAN LIPINSKI ’18 Sell-side equity research broker, Redburn, New York, New York
“Saint Rose was the platform I needed to grow as an individual and led to opportunities I may not have received if I had gone elsewhere. I still have the notebooks I used in many of my courses, knowing that one day I will own my own business, and will have the skills to take with me, wherever I go.”
“One of the things I love about Saint Rose is the plethora of leadership opportunities and ability to build strong campus relationships very early in my college experience. I was able to leave the College with more applicable skills and hands-on experience I wouldn’t have been given at other institutions.”
“I can show the leadership team that I have a general training in business and an understanding of how an organization is run, so I can be utilized as a partner when people come to me with issues or projects. Strategic management, one of the MBA courses I took, helped me think outside the box and connect the dots.”

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT
DR. JOHN DION,
Associate Professor of Marketing Professor John Dion teaches both undergraduate and graduatelevel courses at the Huether School of Business and brings a wealth of industry knowledge to his classrooms. Dion helped develop the College's “Any Time, Any Way Flex MBA," which allows students to take classes via livestream, in person, or on their own time online, providing a convenient format. He was also instrumental in getting our 2-in-4 programs off the ground, helping students reach their academic goals faster. But there’s a lot more to Dion than his business acumen and innovative teaching methods. Here are five things about Dion that make him such an excellent professor to learn from: 1. Dion worked in marketing and product development at the LEGO Group in Billund, Denmark, and Bose Corporation in Framingham, Massachusetts, before coming to Saint Rose. One of his greatest achievements while working at LEGO was developing LEGO Mindstorms — the company’s first robotics product. "It became the best-selling product LEGO ever had, and the product line is still on the shelf 25 years later," he said. 2. Getting involved is important to Dion. He has participated in the College's service trips to Washington, D.C., where he and students support the homeless population by advocating for their rights to Congressional leaders and volunteering at soup kitchens. He's also traveled to Antigua, Guatemala, with Saint Rose students, building stoves for rural communities and helping out at an orphanage for HIV-positive children. "On both trips, we discussed that there is a difference between charity and justice, and we must work on both fronts," he said. 3. Dion is a globetrotter. He has traveled to 30 countries and lived in Denmark for two years. He said he doesn't have a favorite place he visited but instead has favorite experiences. "There are things that I love about each country and each city. However, visiting the temples in Kyoto, walking through Moscow’s Red Square, sailing off the coast of Turkey, and off-roading in a Porsche SUV are a few of the things that stand out," Dion said. 4. His favorite courses to teach are Marketing Management and Marketing Research. Dion said his specialty is Marketing Management since he worked in that capacity before teaching at Saint Rose. As for Marketing Research, he enjoys watching his students work with real clients and become problem solvers for businesses. "In many cases, their clients have implemented the students’ recommendations. I like that the students have made a real difference," Dion said. 5. One piece of advice he would give young business professionals that he wishes someone would have given him: "It might not always be easy, but you can move your career in whatever direction you choose. Don’t ever think that you have to stay with the same job, same company, or even same profession. I had a lot of fun at LEGO and Bose, but I knew when it was time to move on.”

Putting students to work Sharon Edwards-Grant: Q&A
Huether School of Business Coordinator of Internships, Professional Development, and Career Advising
Sharon Edwards-Grant is certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SHRM-SCP, SPHR), and her knowledge of human resources spans decades. She brings her industry thought leadership to the classroom, helping our students prepare for the real world. We recently caught up with her to talk about, what else, internships! How do you help prepare students for an internship? We encourage our students to start thinking about their careers in their first years. Author and business expert Stephen Covey says, “Begin with an end in mind.” That is a motto that is strongly supported and embedded into the curriculum through the pre-internship and professional development course. The course allows our students to identify their professional career goals and recognize personal strengths and areas to improve self awareness. They learn to present themselves professionally by preparing a compelling resume, cover letter, and short bio. The short bio allows the students to succinctly share valuable and pertinent information about themselves in writing and deliver impromptu elevator pitches with assuredness. In the class, we also cover employment ethics, best practices in the workplace, and performance management. A key component of the course is the 1:1 Interview technique workshop each student attends with me. In this session, the student goes through each section of his/her resume until they develop the confidence to share the information with a sense of ownership. We partner with influential subject-matter experts to support students from all majors through an in-class speaker series. We continuously work to build and maintain a strong pipeline of employers to attend our career fairs and information sessions with the goal to connect students to internship opportunities. Why is receiving an internship so important? An internship affords our students a direct link to real-world experiences by pairing them with employers from all sectors and assignments that aligns with their academic majors. Students who have completed a few internship assignments while studying at Saint Rose have a greater chance of obtaining gainful employment upon graduation. Employers like to see evidence of applied knowledge in the field — this shows a student’s readiness for employment. What types of internships do business students pursue? Our students pursue internships within their field of study: finance, financial planning, accounting, sales and business development, marketing, business management, sports management, data and
business analytics, and human resources. These opportunities are paid and unpaid, for-profit and nonprofit, with large and small businesses, and on location and remote. What is the goal of their internship experience? The goal of the internship is to give students the opportunity to apply their academic knowledge and skills in a practical manner in a business setting, work alongside business professionals, and receive mentorship while gaining marketable experience. Another benefit for internship assignments is that students can evaluate the workplace environment and the job assignment to earnestly decide whether the role or company is best suited for them. Hence the focus on encouraging our students to start thinking of their career from their first year. In doing so, with the completion of the required pre-internship and professional development course, they can start obtaining internship assignments from their sophomore year. Ultimately our students should have completed at least two internship assignments, preferable with more than one employer, upon graduation. What made you want to work at Saint Rose in this capacity? I had the privilege to work within a few business sectors in various roles, and the most fulfilling responsibility I had was the recruitment and career development of young professionals. I absolutely enjoyed visiting the universities throughout the Americas and the United Kingdom, meeting with students, hosting information sessions, and attending career fairs. Going through the interview and assessment process, and ultimately, onboarding and seeing them develop as professionals was priceless! However, through these successes, there were others who were left behind. I found that often the missing link is guidance and encouragement. I am at Saint Rose, along with others, giving back, helping our future leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs, and subjectmatter experts to navigate their path from college to career. What advice do you give students before they start their internship? Be a professional, be prepared, be present and engaged, and ensure you meet with your manager to set objectives and expectations. Focus on your learning and what success looks like upon the completion of the assignment. Above all, stay focused on why you are pursuing your degree! It is a costly investment, so use the time wisely and intentionally. You have the gift to channel your path!
FROM THE CLASSROOM TO THE CONFERENCE ROOM Our students gain real-world experience before graduation “My internship has helped me realize what I want/don’t want to do as a career. It also helped me hone key skills such as multitasking, communicating, learning to deal with diversity, and dealing with deadlines, which are different when working for an actual organization.”
Anne-Lynsha Mompérousse ’21, G’21 BS Finance/MS Business Analytics Dual Degree program Mompérousse came to Saint Rose from Port-au-Prince, Haiti, after hearing good things about the Huether School of Business and Saint Rose from a friend. An intern at the Office of the New York State Comptroller, she will be looking for career opportunities as an analyst after graduating this year.
“Interning at Sizigi was an amazing experience. The team there was super friendly and the founder and CEO Tony Malz made sure everyone was welcomed with open arms. Working as a social media intern helped me develop knowledge and skills that I’ll be able to implement in the future. From brainstorming campaigns and managing the company’s social-media platforms to analyzing data, I can definitely say this experience was nothing like I imagined, but I sure did love every moment of it.”
Natalie Joseph ’21 BS, Marketing Management Last spring, despite limitations caused by a raging pandemic, Joseph secured an internship at Sizigi, a start-up company out of San Diego, California, that helps hopeful job candidates create virtual portfolios. She worked remotely as a social media intern, posting content and monitoring engagement.
“My experience at Bestpass, Inc. was tremendous. I learned the functions of day-to-day operations in a real business setting. Most importantly, I learned the value of having support, collaboration, and willingness. As a new employee, there is always a learning curve, whether it is getting acclimated to the new responsibilities, adapting to the team culture, or finding your strengths. Being able to tackle any challenge that comes across your desk, regardless of experience, helps your learning curve excel, especially with support, collaboration, and willingness.”
Andrew Melendez ’20 BS, Business Administration, Golden Knights Lacrosse Melendez interned at BestPass, Inc. in the fall of 2019 and spring of 2020, where he excelled in the data field. After he graduated in May, he secured a job as a project manager in data and market intelligence at TRC Companies, a global engineering consulting and construction management firm. A student-athlete, Melendez credits the Huether School of Business and his athletic career for preparing him for any challenge.
