Undergraduate Programs Through earning their bachelor’s degree, students become highly competitive for graduate studies in the field’s most distinguished programs (including the graduate program at Saint Rose). As an undergraduate, students study normal communication, the science behind speech-language pathology, and communication disorders, with many hours of hands-on clinical experience to complement what is learned in the classroom. More than that, students learn how to be not just a clinician, but also a coach, counselor, and model communicator for clients.

Graduate Programs In the College’s master’s program, future speech-language pathologists gain both the professional expertise and the sensitivity needed to meet the challenges they will face in clinical settings. Besides working on campus at the Winkler Clinic, students gain experience through placements in many community-based practicum sites, including major hospitals, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, preschools, public schools, and private practices. The graduate program is accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). The New York State Education Department has approved the program to license speech-language pathologists and certify teachers of students with speech and language disabilities.

Faculty Saint Rose faculty members are internationally recognized for their scholarly work in stuttering, neurogenic communication disorders, augmentative-alternative communication, voice, speech sound disorders, and other areas. Many of them hold leadership positions in national and global organizations while helping to set policy for New York State and the U.S. They regularly integrate their latest scholarship into their courses.

Remarkable Outcomes Over 95% of Saint Rose graduate students find employment in the field within one to three months of graduation. Many secure a job before graduating because of their successful clinical placements. Some graduates of the bachelor’s degree program have been placed in advanced master’s study because of their thorough preparation at Saint Rose.

EXTRACURRICULARS The Saint Rose chapter of the National Student Speech-LanguageHearing Association (NSSLHA) keeps students abreast of developments in the field through a number of events—including a spring conference at which nationally known expert practitioners present workshops on state-of-the-art issues.

Facilities and Clinical Placements A vital part of the graduate program, the Pauline K. Winkler Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic serves adults and children with speech sound, phonology, language, voice, fluency, and hearing disorders. Graduate students gain invaluable clinical experience in assessment and intervention under the supervision of internationally recognized faculty. A placement at the Winkler Center is the first of five that each graduate student completes. Placement settings also include the Council for Effective Communication (in which students work with people who stutter and their families), local public schools, specialty clinics (for experience in specific disorder areas), and a variety of other clinical venues. Students gain practical exposure to all disorder areas: articulation, fluency, voice and resonance, receptive and expressive language, hearing, cognitive and social aspects of communication, and communication modalities.
