DRAMA, FILM, AND NEW MEDIA, THEN GRADUATING TEACHERS TO ATTORNEYS.

Undergraduate Programs As an English major, students study every aspect of the field: Literature: Readings encompass a wide range of texts and subjects — from Irish to African to Asian-American — in eras from the earliest world literature to the present day. Writing: Students practice all forms of writing, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, plays, screenplay, and for new media. Drama and Performance: Students can choose from a range of courses in acting, theatre arts, the history of drama, and oral interpretation of literature. All students are welcome to audition or work backstage on campus theatre productions. Film and New Media: Students can study new media and film theory as well as specific genres, such as social media or horror film. We also offer writing courses in film and new media. Adolescence Education/English: Students in the Adolescence Education/English programs combine these studies with professional preparation for teacher certification in a program accredited by NCATE (the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education).

EXTRACURRICULARS The Frequency North series features an aggressively eclectic series of readers, including fiction writers, memoirists, graphic novelists, poets, slam performers, and singer-songwriters. The Visiting Scholar Series hosts a renown scholar of English to give a public lecture on campus and interact with graduate students. Study abroad opportunities include a semester at Regent’s University in London, near the famed theatre district and with easy access to all parts of England.

Graduate Programs Research and writing are at the forefront of the English M.A. curriculum. Students earning their Master of Arts in English have presented research at numerous national and international conferences, including the Popular Culture Association, the American Association of Australian Literary Studies, the Southern Humanities Conference, the New York College English Association, the American Conference for Irish Studies, and the New York City Asian American Student Conference. Meanwhile, the M.F.A. in Creative Writing — the first and only program of its kind in the Capital Region — provides serious writers the opportunity to workshop their craft, make connections across genres, and complete a full-length creative work as a thesis. The required Practicum lets students tutor, edit literary journals, organize reading series, or work at nonprofits. The master’s program in Adolescence Education/English enables students to earn their initial teaching certification to teach English in grades 7 through 12. They may also earn their master’s in Adolescence Education/Special Education/English so they will be certified to teach in inclusive classroom settings.

Faculty Saint Rose faculty members include scholars, writers, and performers who love to work with students in small, discussion-based classes and department-sponsored events. These faculty are active in their fields — regularly producing scholarly and creative work.

Internships and Field Experiences All English majors complete an internship that allows them to apply their coursework and skills to the workplace. Students have interned at: the New York State Alliance for Arts Education; The Sanctuary for Independent Media; Film Forum Press; Painted Bride Quarterly; public relations firms; Capital Repertory Theatre; and the Times Union. Adolescence Education majors take courses in teacher preparation, culminating in a semester of supervised student teaching at both the middle and high school levels.

Remarkable Outcomes Saint Rose graduates succeed in a vast range of careers. Recent alumni have become editors at Cengage Learning and the Federal Register, freelance writers, copywriters, novelists, college professors, directors of writing centers, and English teachers at middle and high schools, even Peace Corps workers in Africa. Many undergraduate alumni have earned graduate degrees from Columbia University, Sarah Lawrence College, Emerson College, Northwestern University, Stony Brook University, and many other schools.
