Sunday, September 15, 7:30 pm $30 Adult – Reserved Seating $15 Students – Reserved Seating After leading and writing for various funky bands in the 80’s and recording and performing with MMW in the 90’s, Scofield started the Überjam project in 2000. Once he found super rhythm guitarist Avi Bortnick, he played with various bass and drum teams searching for the right chemistry and found it for two CDs — Grammy Nominated Überjam and Up All Night. The Überjam sound starts with compositions written for his lead guitar, Avi's funky rhythm guitar and sampled loops in front of electric bass and drums. The project has been reunited in 2013 for the May release of a new recording — Überjam Deux and worldwide touring.

Burton created groups featuring incredible musicianship while discovering more than a few youngsters along the way who later became legends. With a swirl of incredible improvisation in a group setting and compositions that drew from all over the map, these quartets smashed conventions and blew audiences away. His new quartet is not just new in name only. With bassist Scott Colley, drummer Antonio Sanchez, and guitarist Julian Lage, this is Burton’s reimagined and revitalized group, a new quartet for a new era.

Recently awarded a MacArthur Fellowship (aka “genius grant”) in February 2013, Thile also won a Grammy for his work on The Goat Rodeo Sessions, collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer and Stuart Duncan. Punch Brothers, described by The Times of London as “brilliant, audacious, original and, above all, entertaining,” released their latest album, Who’s Feeling Young Now?, in 2012 on Nonesuch Records. In Spring 2013, Thile released Bach Sonatas & Partitas Vol. 1, also on Nonesuch Records.
Opening Performance by 2010 American Idol winner Lee DeWyze TOAD THE WET SPROCKET Sunday, November 3, 7:30 pm $30 Adult – Reserved Seating $15 Students – Reserved Seating When Monty Python’s Eric Idle created the fictional band “Toad the Wet Sprocket” for the program “Rutland Weekend Television” in 1975, he never dreamed that anyone would actually use such a silly name. Fast forward to 1986, when four California teens desperately needed to come up with a name to call their band for an upcoming gig at a Goleta, CA, watering hole called The Shack. Since that day, “Toad the Wet Sprocket” has been the name of the four-piece rock band consisting of lead singer Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss. From 1989-1998, they made five studio albums which combined sold over four million copies, had five major radio hits, and won over audiences across North America and Europe. The group is currently in the studio with producer Mikal Blue, and fans can look forward to a new release and extensive tour in 2013

The Peanut Gallery Jazz Trio will take concertgoers on a musical journey reminiscent of a 1940s radio serials, evoking images and emotions from an innocent childhood and days gone by. The concert begins. Suddenly, a news flash: the Holiday Spirit has been stolen. Can the band and the audience get enough Holiday spirit to save the day? With Guaraldi’s music made famous in the “Peanuts” holiday specials, it’s a perfect concert for the jazz lover and the entire family, just in time for the holidays.
As the keyboardist in the trailblazing instrumental trio Medeski Martin & Wood, solo performer, leader of his own project “The Itch,” film composer, and producer, collaborator, whirling-dervish improviser and sideman with countless other artists, Medeski consistently wrings sonic revelations from acoustic and electric piano, Hammond organ, Clavinet, Mellotron, assorted synthesizers and other instruments. He’s nearly as dynamic visually as aurally, windmilling his hands across the keys, leaning into a B-3 stab, reaching inside the piano to tap the strings with a screwdriver. “What’s music for?” the versatile musician asks rhetorically. “Making money? Entertainment? No. It’s a language, one that exists between the land of emotion and the land of intellect. Music can change your whole world.”

ANDREW TYSON PIANO PERFORMANCE Friday, March 14, 7:30 pm $20 Adult – Reserved Seating $10 Students – Reserved Seating First Prize Winner of the 2011 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Andrew Tyson makes his New York debut in the Rhoda Walker Teagle Concert at Merkin Hall and his Washington, DC, debut at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater this season in the Young Concert Artists Series. Also this season, Mr. Tyson gives concerts twice in his home state of North Carolina at the Lincoln Cultural Center and in the St. Stephen’s Concert Series, and also plays at the Falany Center for the Performing Arts in Georgia, the Lied Center of Kansas, the Levine School of Music in Washington, DC, the El Paso Chopin Music Festival in Texas, and the International Keyboard Institute & Festival at the Mannes College of Music in New York. At the 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition, Mr. Tyson won both 5th Prize and the new Terence Judd-Hallé Orchestra Prize, which is awarded by the Orchestra’s musicians and its Music Director, Sir Mark Elder. The Prize brought three performances of Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 2 with the Orchestra in November 2012, which resulted in his being re-engaged for next season. Founded in 1973, the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) is America's leading guitar organization. The GFA provides its members the combined advantages of a guitar society, a library, a publisher, a continuing educational resource, and an arts council. Born in 1986 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Rovshan Mamedkuliev started his studies in classical guitar at the age of 11. In 2004, he entered the Nizhniy Novgorod Conservatoire (academy) and in 2009, he completed his education with honors at the classical guitar for an associate professor, laureate All-Russia competition of Aleksey Petropavlovsky. As evaluated by a teacher, Mamedkuliev possesses an “excellent ear, tenacious memory, developed sense of rhythm and form, bright artistry,” which contributed to his rapid professional growth. He teaches in the Department of folk instruments, as well as in the Arzamas Music College and is currently in graduate school.

This composition, which is patterned after Patricia Brady-Danzig’s children’s book, “Fabrizio’s Fable,” encompasses charming themes for each of the three characters in the story — Fabrizio, the smart little Italian mouse; Luigi, the hungry cat; and Maddalena, Fabrizio’s friend — as well as added music. Written in English and Italian, “La Favola di Fabrizio” celebrates the beautiful Italian language and culture. ¸ will conduct the Saint Noted Romanian composer/conductor Sabin Pauta Rose Orchestra, and Josephine Amore will lead her public school children’s choir in the singing of the Fabrizio Song, composed by Patricia Brady-Danzig. Brady-Danzig will also read the story in both languages. His staged full-length plays include Don’t Stand in the Doorway, There’s a War Going On, Out of Nowhere, and translations of Euripides’ Electra and Seneca’s Medea. His book, Male Beauty: Postwar Masculinity in Theatre, Film, and Physique Magazines, will be published in the spring of 2014. Daniel Nester, assistant professor of English (creative nonfiction, poetry), is most recently the author of How to Be Inappropriate (Soft Skull Press), a collection of humorous nonfiction. His first two books, God Save My Queen: A Tribute and God Save My Queen II: The Show Must Go On, center on his obsession with the rock band Queen. His work has appeared recently in Salon, The New York Times, n+1, The Daily Beast, and McSweeney’s Internet Tendency. He is editor of The Incredible Sestina Anthology, due from Write Bloody Publishing later this year.

Hollis Seamon, professor of English (fiction), is the author of two novels, Somebody Up There Hates You (Algonquin Books, 2013) and Flesh. She is also the author of two short story collections: Body Work and Corporeality. She has published short stories recently in Bellevue Literary Review, Greensboro Review, Fiction International, Chicago Review, and Nebraska Review. Rone Shavers, assistant professor of English (fiction, literary criticism), publishes in multiple genres. His fiction has appeared recently in ACM: Another Chicago Magazine, milk magazine, Identity Theory, nthWORD, Pank, and Warpland: A Journal of Black Literature and Ideas, while his essays and reviews have appeared in such publications as BOMB Magazine, EBR: Electronic Book Review, The Los Angeles Reader, and The Quarterly Conversation. Barbara Ungar, associate professor of English (poetry), is most recently the author of Charlotte Brontë, You Ruined My Life. Previous poetry books include Thrift and The Origin of the Milky Way, which won the Gival Press Poetry Award, an IPPY Silver Medal, the Adirondack Center for Writing Poetry Award, and an Eric Hoffer Award. She is also the author of Haiku in English and several chapbooks.

His most recent books include the novel The Four Fingers of Death and On Celestial Music, a collection of music writing. Other books include Purple America, a novel; Black Veil: A Memoir with Digressions, winner of the PEN Martha Albrand prize for excellence in memoir. Moody’s first novel, Garden State, was published in 1992. His second novel, The Ice Storm (Little Brown 1994), was made into a film directed by Ang Lee in 1997. Moody’s short fiction and journalism have been anthologized widely, and his radio pieces have appeared on NPR and at the Third Coast International Audio Festival. His band, The Wingdale Community Singers, in which he plays and write lyrics, have released three albums.

His prose includes two bilingual children’s books, Soledad Sigh-Sighs (2003) and Antonio’s Card (2005), young adult novels in The Mariposa Club series, and the novel Crossing Vines (2003). His nonfiction work includes Autobiography of My Hungers (2013), Red-Inked Ratablos (2013) and Butterfly Boy: Memories of a Chicano Mariposa (2006). The recipient of Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, González writes a Latino book column for the El Paso Times and is on the Advisory Circle of Con Tinta, a collective of Chicano/Latino activist writers.
